Hello everyone, I recently uploaded the logo of the Communist Party (Switzerland) on Commons. There are several users who keep flagging it for speedy deletion and lack of permission. Nylkmzra and I (both representatives of the Communist Party) clearly stated to those users that the logo meet the criteria to be labeled as a simple design: in fact it is composed of simple geometric shapes, letters and a Unicode symbol (Unicode symbol for hammer and sickle). I would like to label it with the following licenses:

{{PD-textlogo}}
{{Trademarked}}

How can we do so? Thanks in advance for your replies. --EgonCanevascini (talk) 20:57, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

I believe that This has been handled wrong by several people. (I may have a detail wrong somewhere in the following: this is complicated.) Apparently it was originally uploaded by User:Nylkmzra with a claim of {{CC-BY-SA}}, then deleted by User:Billinghurst because there was no such license granted on the party's website. User:EgonCanevascini then uploaded it with a claim that it was not eligible for copyright. User:大诺史 marked it as a possible copyvio because of the deletion history (which EgonCanevascini reverted); 大诺史 then removed {{PD-textlogo}} and restored the nsd claim; there has been a bit more back-and-forth here, I don't have time right now to go into it all.
Just for what it is worth: the hammer and sickle symbol as such is certainly in the public domain. It dates back to the mid-19th century. I personally don't see any reason that this image would be copyrightable.
It seems to me that this should be changed to a proper DR discussion, not a templating edit war. Does anyone object to going that route? - Jmabel ! talk 23:13, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
@EgonCanevascini: The design itself may not be copyright, however, the produced version that you have uploaded can be copyright for its production values. If you wish to have someone else's production, and the site itself states copyright ownership, you will either need a permission for the version, or you need to produce your own version.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:13, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: That’s not “someone else’s production”. Actually I have the permission of the party to publish the image. I am a member of the Central Committee of the party. —EgonCanevascini (talk) 00:23, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
Yes it is, one own's the copyright to one's production, to not just be taken by another. So if you are using their production, then you need their permission, you cannot just take it. Permissions need to follow Com:OTRS for us to hold a work.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:28, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: The problem with the Com:OTRS procedure is that we do not want to release the logo as CC-BY-SA. We just would like it to appear in our Wikipedia page. The right choice for us seems to be licensing the image with
{{PD-textlogo}}
{{Trademarked}}
like many other political parties’ logos are on Wikimedia Commons. —EgonCanevascini (talk) 00:39, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: This does not matter at all because the file is below TOO. According license tags (the ones Egon linked to) are added now in the file description. — Speravir – 00:51, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
As the discussion from Jmabel stated, they were not labelled that way when I originally deleted them. @Speravir: TOO is an argument to navigate around the original copyright, but it is not an argument that can be waged for simply taking a specific production of another person.

Easiest way is to have your own version, or to go through OTRS.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:50, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

Again, it seems to me that this should be changed to a proper DR discussion. Does anyone object to going that route? - Jmabel ! talk 03:44, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Someone else created the DR discussion yet: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Partito Comunista (Svizzera).tif. — EgonCanevascini (talk) 07:15, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

Orval Overall has two categories

His wikipedia aritcle links here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Orval_Overall. The linked category appears as a subcategory in the main Orval Overall category (there is an item "Orval Overall" above all the images below). Can we unlink the wikipedia article from the subcategory and link it to the main category? Oaktree b (talk) 00:02, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

@Oaktree b: Yes, I did that for you in this edit. The 'item "Orval Overall" above all the images below' is the Orval Overall gallery, hosted here in mainspace. It's pretty empty, you might want to fill it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:14, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

Files with no source and potentially misleading

I can't seem to find information on how to deal with unsourced files that are potentially misleading. We have for example File:FeyliLurishClothes.jpg with no confirmation of them actually being Feylis. --Ahmedo Semsurî (talk) 10:52, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

@Ahmedo Semsurî: Thank you for your question. It seems that the file of File:FeyliLurishClothes.jpg is properly sourced in terms of copyright information. Are you doubting that the clothing of the people in the file are not ethnic clothing of Feyli Kurds? Thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 11:00, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
@Shadegan: Pinging uploader to join the discussion.廣九直通車 (talk) 11:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
First of all, I'm confused by the title: If Feylis are Kurds, why does he portray them as Lurs. Secondly, the clothes do not look Kurdish at all, but look like something Lurs wear. --Ahmedo Semsurî (talk) 11:16, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
Found some pictures of Lur men in traditional clothes[1]This one looks a lot like the dress the boy is wearing --Ahmedo Semsurî (talk) 11:26, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
If the image description or file name is incorrect you can mark the image with {{Fact disputed}}, or simply edit the description. MKFI (talk) 12:48, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

Deleted(?) file

I've been looking for the creator of a painting of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. This 2016 article cites it from Wikicommons, but I can't find it in any relevant categories now, so was it deleted? Can someone tell me the creator? Raymond1922 (talk) 05:03, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Without the original file name at Commons, there's no chance of finding out whether it was deleted. I've tried a few of the names of this file that are still available across the web, but none of these was ever uploaded at Commons. De728631 (talk) 13:07, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Joukkue_IR_led.png

https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Joukkue_EEPROM.png

Reason for this is that, all of them are actually already contained in following

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Joukkue0.pdf

There become possibility to put pdf files in wikipedia so old images
are no more relevant as all of them are contained in newer pdf file.

Dealing with another person's picture in the Talent's Category

I was searching for another person's information, and the photograph posted in "Category: Anna Ishii" was another person. Inferred from the content of the article, I think it is Category about Anna Ishii, a member of the Japanese dance group E-girls. In the photograph that is published The personally identifiable face photo Anna Ishii at 2014 MTV Video Music Awards Japan.jpg and Anna Ishii, 2014 (cropped) .jpg are photos of SAYAKA, also belonging to E-girls. Photos with multiple E-girls members MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2014 E-Girls.jpg and MTV VMAJ 2014 E-Girls.jpg do not contain Category members. In addition, members of Category are included in E-girls @ VMAJ 2018.jpg that appears when searching for E-girls.

If there is such a clear difference between a person's picture and a Category picture, what will happen? The members of Category are [2].

And many more by that account.

Could you help to check it out if that account is posting legit OTRS or just fake OTRS?

And also if all of the images at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Polandball_comics AND https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Countryballs_by_country are considered to be applicable to Wikimedia Creative Commons ? Encik Tekateki (talk) 12:36, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Can anyone direct me to a Commons decision to allow images from this organization without further licensing/permission? As far as I can see, we are now allowing them without question, and more and more are being uploaded and added to Wikipedia articles. Is this OK? Do we care? Just askin'. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 18:03, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

@SergeWoodzing: the relevant rule in this case is COM:Threshold of originality. In a nutshell: the logo is so simple, it is not eligible for copyright. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:09, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
With a contribution history as extensive as yours, you probably already know this. Perhaps I am misinterpreting your question. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:13, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
If you are referring to the files in Category:Files from mynewsdesk.com, it looks like the files are kept at Commons because they have a Creative Commons Attribution license according to their source pages. Don't you think that is sufficient? --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:39, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
Thank you! In 2 cases, so far, for example, I've contacted the photographers whose photos have been uploaded to Commons this way. Neither one was aware that their allowing Mynewsdesk to publish their images automatically would release them to the public domain. One approved eventually. The other has not responded yet. My impression of status quo is that Mynewsdesk's images automatically are approved at Commons nowadays. Am I wrong? --SergeWoodzing (talk) 21:53, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
@SergeWoodzing: I'm confused: are they saying Mynewsdesk put a license on the photo that was not in their contract? Or that they didn't read the contract closely, but it is in there? Also: where does "public domain" come into it, or are you speaking metaphorically? - Jmabel ! talk 23:19, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
I only know that they did not realize that their photos, through Mynewsdesk, would be made generally available to the public for use as we please. Looks like I don't know enough about the difference between terms like Creative Commons and public domain, having thought for many years that what we upload to Commons goes to public domain. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 23:26, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload a picture of this graffiti?

I was recently at a men's bathroom in a restaurant and saw a graffiti written on the wall saying "Kill all Muslims". I took a picture of it. music

Should any music, in general, be uploaded? For example, this song is copyrighted w/ (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0). Does not seem that constructive to me and I am assuming that it will not be permitted to be uploaded, but may as well ask if it is permissible because it does meet the commons copyright criteria. Fluffy89502 07:24, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Alright so from my understanding now that specific song cannot be uploaded due to the fact that it is copyrighted as Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) instead of Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) correct? Clicking on an image to enlarge it actually makes it smaller

Hi, I am a bit confused on what is the matter here: I use Chrome on Windows, and when I click on an image to enlarge it, it goes really small instead (like a thumbnail), and clicking it again enlarges it slightly. Not clicking it at all gives me the largest on-screen size! I have tried with MediaViewer and without, and it's the same. A different computer with Chrome and my profile works perfectly fine?! Chrome doesn't need updating either. Any idea what the problem could be? Thank you in advance. -- Deadstar (msg) 10:21, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload a fotoshopped picture took my cameras and after some changes, that I made on my phone? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlexBryukhanov (talk • contribs) 4 June 2019‎ 12:25 (UTC) (UTC)

  • The answer is probably yes, but I want to make sure I've understood you correctly, because what you wrote is not entirely clear.
  • If you took the picture yourself, and it is within scope, yes you may Photoshop before uploading. The picture still needs to be within Commons' scope, and in particular the Photoshopping should not be such as to falsify the what the photo shows (e.g. if you Photoshopped in an additional person, that is not OK).
  • Probably the best practice is to first upload the unaltered image, then upload the cleaned-up image as a new version of that image, with the differences described in whatever language you write best. Hello

I uploaded 3 video yesterday and i got the answer today of the owner that I'm not allowed to reuse them. Could someone delete those video because i cannot find how to do? Thank you in advance.--Atlerbeau (talk) 06:12, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Convenience links:
@Atlerbeau:
Normally, you have 7 days to ask for a courtesy deletion (per Commons:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion that would be {{speedydelete|G7 - uploader request)}} but I see that two of these are already linked from the French-language Wikipedia, so I'm not sure that applies). Can someone clarify whether the uploader can do this after the files have been linked?
Also, when you uploaded, you said these were public domain works prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person's official duties, so who is the "owner" who said you may not reuse them? Or was that original statement inaccurate? - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The original videos are indeed the property of the US government but the videos I uploaded are annotated by a third party company that I contacted by email and who confirmed to me that they did not want to publish their videos on wiki commons.--Atlerbeau (talk) 05:30, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
@Atlerbeau: Can you upload the USG originals, instead?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:49, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Do you know any free video editor that works to delete the logos from the video and crop it? I tried Filmora but it puts watermark when you export the video... And with VLC I cannot saved the effects... very frustrating--Atlerbeau (talk) 08:21, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
en:Avidemux should do the job. --Magnus (talk) 08:59, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Uploading my photo of monument from a US National Park site

I have attempted to upload a file named Monument to the 46 USCC 5th and 6th murdered at Saltville, Virginia. I took this photo at Camp Nelson National Historic Monument. I am not sure if it has been removed.

I received a message from Magog the Ogre questioning its copyright status. My assumption has been a photo of a monument at National Park site has no copyright issues.

I am a neophyte to Wikipedia but have made some extensive edits successfully to the Camp Nelson wiki page.

I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction so that I can post this image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Erinod333 (talk • contribs)

  • "it wont let me upload it" is kind of vague, so I'm not sure what happened; my guess is that you were trying to do a cross-wiki upload (e.g. from Wikipedia) of a small image without EXIF data. Because that so often is a pattern for a copyright violation, there is a filter to prevent those. You can avoid the filter by uploading directly from Commons:Upload wizard.
  • However: there is a good reason that usually indicates a copyright violation. If one of your relatives owns the copyright of the picture, that relative, not you, needs to provide a license for it. Or are you the heir to the photographer's intellectual property? If that's the case, say so, and I can give you an easier route through this.
  • If you are not the heir to the photographer's intellectual property, most likely the best way to clarify permission is the process described at COM:OTRS, though if the photographer is still alive, and the copyright has never been transferred, and that person has a web page of their own that is clearly under their control, they could also simply reproduce the photo on that page and specify a license.
  • In any case: if these criteria can be met to clarify ownership of the rights for these photos, Commons would want the highest-resolution versions that are available. - Jmabel ! talk 05:04, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

I'm confused about the process of free photos and autocomplete.

So when I joined Wikimedia, I tried editing Judge Judy Sheindlin's Wikipedia page, as I felt it needed a newer photo. I found out the day after that the photo had been taken down. I'm not sure whether the photo actually has any violations or not, but I need some help trying to figure out how to properly edit and make sure the photo is able to be put on this Wikipedia page.

This is where the image came from:

And in case it won't work, this is the image itself:

Issue with templates

I am having an issue with an article review and the templates in use. There used to be a template "PD-US-expired-abroad" which worked for items not published in the US. This template no longer works and if you look at the page Template:PD-US-expired-abroad it says to use {{PD-US-expired}}. Unfortunately, this is not correct as that template says it was published prior to 1924, which my reviewer takes issue with, as expired is ≠ to no copyright existed. So, for example, how would one tag this as being in the PD in the US? According to this chart articles published abroad and made by foreign nationals prior to 1924 are in the PD in the US even if they were not published here. SusunW (talk) 19:57, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Okay, maybe I figured it out. If I use {{PD-1996}} the three part criteria are:
  • first published outside the United States It was published in Armenia
  • first published prior to "1 March 1989 without copyright notice or before 1964 without copyright renewal or before the source country established copyright relations with the United States" It was published in 1919 with no notice and Armenia did not establish relations until 1993[2]
  • in the public domain in its home country on 1 January 1996 anonymous work, 70 years from 1919 lapsed in 1989. (Note, even though the photograph has no creator stated, the Armenian copyright law of 2006 did give author's rights to the person who first published it, Avetis Aharonyan (1866-1948), but as he died in 1948, his rights lapsed in 2018.)
Is this the correct assessment? SusunW (talk) 21:48, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

MKFI, that's it. The page previously had an image of a woman of the same name at a comics event. But the article was for a skier. I confirmed that the uploaded person matches the skier and then corrected the Wikidata item and the other language articles. Should be resolved now, as the old image has been removed from the skier's category and has a note so it doesn't get confused again. Opencooper (talk) 08:26, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

May I act as agent for a copyright holder?

Keir Morse is a prolific plant photographer with a good reputation for accurate IDs. He has over 30,000 photos on https://calphotos.berkeley.edu and on my website - PlantID.net.

His copyright at UC and on PlantID.net is CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 ( https://calphotos.berkeley.edu/cgi/photographer_query?where-name_full=Keir+Morse&one=T )

However, in the interest of helping people learn about plants, Keir has agreed to let me post his photos to Wikipedia with a less limiting copyright - CC BY-SA as long as his image side dimensions don't exceed 300px.

I tried uploading some of his files through the Wikimedia Commons Wizard, but got stopped because this situation doesn't fit your standard choices.

Please let me know how to proceed.

Thank you!

Bruce Homer-Smith

@Bruce PlantID: Wikipedia is situated on the domain “wikipedia.org”. Commons doesn’t permit for CC BY-NC-SA. If Keir wants to relicense under the pure CC BY-SA some works previously published under non-commercial licenses, then he must follow Commons:Email templates. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 17:23, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your help Incnis. Two questions:

1) Keir has over 30,000 images. I plan to choose from these images as I use them in articles illustrating plant characters. Your email form appears to require specific authorization from Keir every time I use an image, rather than a blanket permission. Can you suggest a way that won't be onerous for him, having to send another email each time I use more of his images?

2) It looks like I'm supposed to upload the images before Keir gives permission to use them. How do I do that if I'm not the owner?

Thanks for your help.

Bruce PlantID (talk) 22:09, 8 June 2019 (UTC)Bruce PlantID

@Bruce PlantID: There are several ways to do this:
  • I certainly believe that through COM:OTRS he can indicate (for example) that you are authorized under his behalf to upload images not to exceed 300x300px, under a CC-BY-SA license. While the email templates Incnis Mrsi mentions are nice, I'm pretty certain they are by no means a specific requirement; if you like, you could probably verify that with someone at OTRS before you even bring Keir into the loop.
  • In the event that the people at COM:OTRS will not agree to this on that basis (which would surprise me), you can upload in the normal manner, tagging the uploads with {{subst:OP}}; you can give him a list of URLs for the filenames, which he can use as an attachment to a release through OTRS.
  • Or, similarly, you can forward him in whatever manner is convenient (a PDF or a ZIP, I would think), the various small images that you intend to upload, and he could start the OTRS process even before you start the uploads.
  • Or, similarly, you can forward Keir Morse a list of URLs of the full-res images in question (if they are already online) and he can send an OTRS authorizing you specifically to upload images of these not to exceed 300x300px, under a CC-BY-SA license.

Photo of public transportation card

One of the photos I have upload, named File:金陵通.jpg, have been deleted. It is a photograph taken for the public transportation card used in en:Nanjing city, the capital city of en:Jiangsu province. I can't re-upload pictures and correct them

Hi everybody!

A week ago I uploaded some pictures from a paper, about sawflies. But some of them are not right: Just a square from a random part of the original picture. It was originally my mistake as I uploaded the wrong version, but I can't change the "version" of it with the correct ones. The Page keeps saying they are the same picture on the uploading (and keeps the square). I want to correct my mistake!

Thank you!

LeónHormiga (talk) 03:40, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

It's just a caching issue; you need to force reload, or just wait until your system updates. I see the full version of File:Male of Taquus schrottkyi.jpg and File:Egg of Taquus schrottkyi on S. commersonii.jpg, not just the square that was originally uploaded.--Prosfilaes (talk) 08:29, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

Upload Logo Audi Cup 2019

I wanted to upload a file concerning a football tournament in the summer (Audi Cup 2019). The logo contains the four logos auf the participating clubs, which was the reason, why the upload was blocked at the first time. The clubs are Bayern München, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahce Istanbul. I work for the agency, which organizes the tournament and we also created the logo. We have also the confirmation of the clubs to use the logo in the communication ahead of the tournament. Is there any way to upload the file and to update the site in English and German afterwards? Thank you in advance. --Christiansteiler — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christiansteiler123 (talk • contribs) 08:42, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

— Speravir – 23:23, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Deleted legal pictures

Hi,

Could you please help me with this issue? I got a couple messages like this: "Túrelio‬ left a message on your talk page in "‪File:Lukács Gábor Dénes .jpg‬". File:Lukács Gábor Dénes .jpg wurde als mögliche Urheberrechtsverletzung gekennzeichnet. Auf den Wikimedia Commons werden nur Dateien, die unter freie… View message ‪Túrelio‬ View changes"'

... and all the pictures I used were deleted. I have got those pictures directly from the person who took them, I have had all the rights to use them. How is that possible, that someone deleted them all? How does the security system work?!

Please, reload them asap! And please, inform me about it!

Thank you very much!

Kindest regards,

  • @Peter Bakonyi: It looks like you haven't discussed this at all with Túrelio before bringing this to a general forum, or am I missing something? No responses from you on your talk page where you were notified, nothing on User talk:Túrelio. Usually that is the best way to get a clarification: talk to the person who contacted you.
  • You uploaded these claiming them as your own work; you are now saying you "got those pictures directly from the person who took them". Given that contradiction, I suspect that Túrelio did the right thing.
  • In general, copyright can be transferred only in writing, and only the holder of a copyright can grant a CC license. If you have a formal transfer of copyright, you can send that in as described in COM:OTRS; once the images are restored you should correct the source and author information to be accurate. If you don't have a formal transfer of copyright, then the actual photographer needs to send permission as described in COM:OTRS (and, again once the images are restored you should correct the source and author information).
  • @Túrelio: anything to add? - Jmabel ! talk 15:57, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
@Peter Bakonyi: ,
just to get the facts straight.
You were notified on your talkpage about the copyright problem for each of your uploads, including the specific problem of each file.
My colleague has already pointed to the contradiction in your claims regarding authorship.
Also you state "I have had all the rights to use them". Let's check that for the only one of you images, which I actually have deleted:
  • File:GettyImages-1143173833.jpg, which you also claimed as own work. From whom did you get "the rights" to release it under a cc-by-sa-4.0 license, which also allows commercial use?
Finally, 4 of your uploads were images of works of art (File:Ajándék egy példaképnek.jpg, File:Autó intarzia.jpg, File:Intarzia lámpa.jpg, File:Motor intarzia.jpg), which have even 2 copyrights (artist and photographer) for which you need to provide a permission.

  • @Deanna Coakley: Typically a newspaper from 1976 would still be in copyright. Is there any reason to believe it is in the public domain or that an appropriate free license is available? If not, it does not belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:47, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

  • Sadly, the fact that the paper no longer exists does not extinguish the copyright: it just makes it very difficult to track down who is the copyright-holder whose permission you need. - Jmabel ! talk 16:12, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: First, what was going wrong: I was satisfactorily logged in to Wikipedia but on shifting across to Wikimedia commons, found I was logged out. On trying to log in, I had problems with the password and attempted to get a new password sent to my e-mail address. This did not arrive. I was blocked from setting up a new account with the same username (as it was already taken), so, perhaps unwisely but following the instructions on the screen in front of me, I created a new username.
Since then I have gone into my preferences in Wikipedia and set a new password and now find that I can also get into Wikimedia commons in the way we both expect. (This was a case of changing something and seeing if it fixed the problem.) I am now unsure on how to sort out the mess that I have created, since I now have comment to a picture in commons with a new username. I guess I can go back and edit out that username and replace it with ThoughtIdRetired, but I am still left with 2 accounts, which is clearly not correct.
ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 19:34, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Looking at the problem of receiving a temporary password by e-mail - this appears to have been a temporary e-mail problem - I now have several of these messages.

Search videos by duration?

I encountered and repaired a video file File:PETbreakdown.webm which had an erroneous duration (the video is actually 13 seconds long, but the file listed it as being over 64 hours; the bitrates of the transcoded files were erroneously small as a result). I would like to check if any similar files with erroneously long durations exist so they can be repaired. Is it possible to search by duration and find the "longest" videos on Commons? Yes, it's possible but I personally don't know how. This would be a good report to have for COM:DBR. Perhaps one of the bot maintainers listed there can create a report that's updated semi-frequently. Killiondude (talk) 07:42, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

legality of using photos of cemetery (funerary) art

Greetings - my recent travels in France and Italy were to research and photograph sculptural monuments in cemeteries, as I have done in South America and elsewhere. There is no commercial aspect to my work - I do not intend to make money from the photographs I take. I do, however, want to publish on Wikipedia some of the photographs, and have done so with many of them. On my most recent trip (April 2019), however, I began hearing about restrictions on photographs of what I previously considered "public" artwork. I've been trying to determine just what is permitted and not permitted, and I cannot pin it down.

Specific question: I have a photograph of a grave in France (with a sculpture by a known artist) where the deceased died in 1989. First of all, are funerary sculptures in a public cemetery copyrighted? If so, I can't tell if the 'author's death plus 70 years' applies, or the '20 years after publication' is the rule. (I'm referring here to the language in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_law_of_France )

Another specific question: Italian regulations apparently are different from most other places. For this reason, I include a Soprintendenza license tag on photos I upload to Commons, even if the cemetery sculptures are clearly out of copyright ('author's life plus 70 years'). But I notice in that license tag (and elsewhere) that photos that otherwise qualify for uploading to Commons may not be 'legal' to display on an it.wikipedia.org/ page, except in low-resolution. This restriction may apply only to Italian citizens adding photos to it.wikipedia.org/ pages, but it just is not clear to me. (I am not an Italian citizen. Would it be a violation for me to add a File: image to it.wikipedia.org/ ? I just don't know after reading the Soprintendenza tag language and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_law_of_Italy and other sources.)

I'm not asking for legal advice, of course. What I need is to find a clear description of regulations as they apply specifically to cemetery (funerary) artwork. Thanks in advance for any help.

@Jon Kessel-Fell: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you wrote it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, please read en:WP:OWN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:48, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

how do you upload a picture of a deceased person that has no copy-write (©) but a credit. Papagena Press supplied this picture to the New York Time for use in Katherine Hoover's obituary. It was used in a lower resolution. Papagena Press would like wikicommons to have a higher resolution.

Mkoronowski (talk) 04:54, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

@Mkoronowski: #1: Wikimedia Commons respects copyright law, in source countries, in the United States, and in most countries of the world via the Berne Convention. In those countries, a copyright exists the moment a work is "fixed", rather than requiring registration. In the United States, notice and registration have not been required since 1 March 1989. So no, you may not upload such recent works without permission from the copyright holders until their copyrights have expired. #2: You could write {{g7}} as the first line of the page.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:10, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Jeff G./talkThis is great news, I do have verbal permission and was given the photo expressly to uplosd to wiki common for people to use. what does {{g7}} mean? Mkoronowski (talk) 05:50, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
@Mkoronowski: Please go ahead and click the links I sent you, I promise they don't bite. When transcluded, {{g7}} acts as {{SD|G7}}, which requests speedy deletion in accordance with criterion G7 (author request within a week).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 06:04, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

The Nikolsburg Alphabet, a historic depiction of the Old Hungarian and Hebrew alphabets, is currently represented in Commons by File:Nikolsburg.gif, a low quality black-and-white GIF scan. A much higher resolution, full color scan is available in the Hungarian Electronic Library; however, it's a JPEG, so can't be directly uploaded over the current GIF.

What is the best way to get this image updated?

--NetRolller 3D (talk) 16:34, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Upload the jpg file and then change links in all articles that use the gif image to the uploaded jpg image. After that you can nominate the gif for deletion. Ruslik (talk) 18:42, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

deletion request ignored or removed?

A few days ago (13 June 2019) I requested a deletion review for a page I had uploaded earlier in June. The page has not been deleted, and there are no comments as to why not, or why my original deletion review request is no longer associated with the page. As this is the first time I've done anything other than a SPEEDYDELETE request, I may well have done it wrong - in any case, I'm now completely confused. The page is Deletion requests/File:Montmartre pitchal.jpg I need help sorting this out. (The page has questionable license issues, so I wanted to have it deleted if it could not be licensed properly.)

Seauton (talk) 18:52, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Hmm,
if you look at the edit-history of that image[5], you see that you were the only user who edited it. In your first edit on June 13th, you added the speedy-request. However, in your 2nd edit, you removed it.
Your rationale was correct, however, as it's the grave of a person deceased in 1989, whereby the monument is still in copyright and France has no usable freedom-of-panorama exception. Therefore, I've requested it for deletion now: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Montmartre pitchal.jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. Yes, I edited it twice. After I added the SPEEDYDELETE tag, I had second thoughts that maybe it would be better to ask 'the community' whether it should be deleted. (I wasn't sure, as I noted earlier.) In the second edit, after I removed the SPEEDYDELETE, I added what I thought was a deletion review request (if there is such a thing). I think I must have done that step wrong. Thanks again for helping.

Problems with Paragraph Editing

*Excuse me by my poor vocabulary and gramatical errors, I'm still just a student of the language wanting to collaborate with this awesome community.*

Recently I've been working into a project of translating some parts of brazilian history to English. For first, I decided to translate about the "República da Espada" (Republic of The Sword, in free translation). Nevertheless, I've been having a bit of a problem with paragraph editing: when I click on "+ Add Translation" to a paragraph, I am able to translate it completely. But, for some reason, I commited a mistake - I am not sure of what have I typed or clicked, but I lost the "+Add Translation" button located on the side of the original article's paragraph.

If any noble soul out there could help me solve this stressful problem, I would be utterly thankfull.

Greetings from GkRosental.

Pan/zoom for large SVG images

Hello,

This panorama image has a ZoomViewer option, but this biology diagram does not. The biology diagram is large enough that it's difficult to read the text, so I'd like to be able to pan and zoom. Is there a way to do that for SVG images on Wikimedia Commons?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ariutta (talk • contribs) 21:59, 19 June 2019‎ (UTC)

@Ariutta: The nominal size of your upload File:MiRNA Regulation of DNA Damage Response.svg is only 1,904 × 918 pixels, or 1,747,872 pixels. It appears that nominal size is not big enough to trigger the ZoomViewer (the limit is "2 megapixels" per Help:Gadget-ZoomViewer), so you could enable it manually by tagging that upload {{LargeImage}} or by increasing the nominal size by a minimum of 10% in each direction.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:39, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Commons mirror? (ares-conference.eu)

I found the following links while searching "PUMP COMMONS Village Pump" in Ecosia:

http://www.ares-conference.eu/ares2016/commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_Village_pump.html

&

http://www.ares-conference.eu/ares2016/commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_Upload_Wizard_blacklist_issues.html

Which appear to be a mirror website of Wikimedia Commons as of 2016 (?), is this mirror properly attributed? And what software do these companies use to make a mirror of Wikimedia Commons? Such mirrors can actually serve well to help find lost files, or maybe to attribute a link if we could use it for other websites if the Internet Archive will prove to be too difficult to use for Wikimedia Commons (maybe, I guess). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:42, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

It is apparently not a full mirror, links like : http://www.ares-conference.eu/ares2016/commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_Village_pump/Proposals.html#Tool_to_find_files_with_few_categories works, while http://www.ares-conference.eu/ares2016/commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_Mobile_access/Mobile_upload_needing_check.html#Background , http://www.ares-conference.eu/ares2016/commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_Mobile_access/Mobile_upload_needing_check.html , & http://www.ares-conference.eu/ares2016/https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mobile-l/2014-August/007927.html all seem to leave 404 codes, is there a reason why some pages on Wikimedia Commons seems to have been archived while others have not? Does Wikimedia Commons prohibit bots from crawling certain pages? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:55, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload Press Material ?

Hey, I want to use some material from a company which offers them to Press for free use. I don't know any other way on how to use it in the created page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruhrpottflyer (talk • contribs)

@Ruhrpottflyer: I think you can assume that "free" here means "free of charge" rather than "free of obligation". As such, we would not be able to host it as it is almost certainly copyrighted, but if you can find anywhere in it an intention to release under a free licence, fine. Getting a license for a photo

Hello. This is most likely a very simple question and I apologize that I was having trouble finding a clear answer elsewhere, which is why I'm bringing it here. I am attempting to upload this photo, and the photographer/owner has agreed to approve a license for it. It's been a long time since I've uploaded a photo on Wikimedia Commons, and my recollection was that during the upload process, I'd get information about how to go about getting the license approved. But I did not find that during the uploading, and instead it just uploaded, so right now that file is not properly licensed. The way I recall it working was that I was supposed to get an email template that I can then send to the photographer/owner, which they can fill out and send back to me, and then I send it to Wikimedia Commons to show the license is in order. Is this correct, and if so, where do I find that email template, and where do I send it afterward? Thanks, and sorry again... Hunter Kahn (talk) 19:50, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

It is not clear if you used Commons:Upload Wizard? You can find necessary templates in Commons:Email_templates. Ruslik (talk) 20:19, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
@Hunter Kahn: Hello, and welcome. It is clear to me that you used the Commons:Upload Wizard. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept that photo, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for that work and similarly situated works on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:40, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
And the key word in that last sentence from Jeff is "or". If you can have the photographer indicate the license on their own website or social media presence, that is almost always easier. OTRS is more of a fallback if that is not feasible. - Jmabel ! talk 22:49, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Could someone give me a more detailed explanation what is the difference between "Seascapes at sunrise" and "Sunrises at sea"?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:22, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

"At sea" suggests "on a ship". There is a note at "Sunrises at sea" that says "Images of sunrises on the ocean, away from the coast. (Please do not add images taken from the shore)". --El Grafo (talk) 10:01, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Copyright

Hi,

I'm a professional photographer. I thought I would contribute with some pictures and tried to upload them throught the Swedish wipipedia site. However I was not allowed and got a message that you could not decide if the pictures were copyrighted. Is there anyway around this or should I just not provide my own pictures to the site?

I have not previously edited anything on wikipedia or wikimedia commons.

Hi Magnus, first (as far as I know) you must have an account to upload files here.
Then, during uploading a file or some files, you will be asked, if (and you must confirm that) you are the copyright holder.
If then are further questions, it will be helpful to know, which upload form you have used and what is the error message. Greetings --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 12:49, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
For a Commons beginner, I recommend starting your uploads from Special:UploadWizard. Among other things, it lets you get past some filters that apply when you try to do cross-wiki uploads from one of the Wikipedias.
Also: if you are releasing photos that are already published online, either you need to indicate the license on the "original" site/page (one clearly under your control) or you need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS. Otherwise, anyone could claim to be you and to release rights on your work. - Jmabel ! talk 18:23, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

About creating a page in commons

I have the concept about how to upload medias in commons. But recently i wanted to create a commons page name like this. I wanted to create the page named "Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University". As i have editing concept in other wikipedia projects, i know that, i can create page by searching and clicking on the red text. But here, whenever i type "Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University", it took me to the category page. And i tried a lot, every time it did the same thing. Now, my question is how can i create a page (like i linked at the first) that has already a category with the same name. Thanks in advance. --Rafi Bin Tofa (talk) 14:44, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Slightly off topic question about viewing account activity

I can't seem to find a way to view my account activity, that is what devices and an IP addresses I've logged into. I know asking this isn't particular related to Commons but this is the best fitting location that I could find to ask this question. Does anyone know if there is a particular special page or place in which I can see my account activity? Thanks.—The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 17:06, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey The Editor's Apprentice. This type of information is only available to editors with Checkuser access and can even then only be accessed under particular circumstances. Someone without this access cannot view this data, even for themselves, probably in no small part due to the fact that it would assist malicious users in avoiding scrutiny in using illegitimate sock puppet accounts. GMGtalk 17:09, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
That's actually kind of funny because I got a notification that said I should review my account activity to confirm if an unfamiliar log in was mine but apparently I can't! Anyway, thanks for your explanation, it makes sense.—The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 17:21, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Hey The Editor's Apprentice. You can review the contributions of your account by clicking "contributions" in the upper left hand corner (when viewing on PC). If you find that there have been edits made that weren't you, or if you receive this message when you have not logged into your account recently from a new device, then you should consider changing your password, and ensuring that the password you use is a strong one, which can't be easily guessed by a computer program. As a general rule for everyone regardless, you should also ensure you have email enabled and that you have a strong and unique password for your email account, as this is the only way to recover your Wikimedia account in the case that it ever is compromised. GMGtalk 17:26, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. I already do have email enabled and my password for it is fairly strong and I know of a plausible action of my own that might of lead to the notification. I am going to review my most recent global contributions (those since the notification) and also change my password.—The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 17:37, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

The problem I can see here is that there is no default way at Commons to store a YouTube link. It's all left to the uploader, so any bot should have as many optional url patterns as possible. De728631 (talk) 00:01, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Does the "Temples in Penghu County" category have to be subdivided by geographic location?

Do we really need to subdivide Magong, Siyu, Baisha, Huxi, etc categories from Category:Temples in Penghu County? Are there so many temples that would fit this more precise category that we need to subdivide by geographic location?--Kai3952 (talk) 19:01, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Most of these categories have 7 to 10 subcategories each for individual temples. So my guess is yes, there are so many temples in this area that is reasonable to have separate geographic location categories, and even individual temple categories. De728631 (talk) 21:53, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello, There is a CC 4.0 piano recording on the Petrucci Music Library (https://imslp.org/wiki/25_Preludes,_Op.31_(Alkan,_Charles-Valentin) that I would like to add to the Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preludes,_Op._31_(Alkan). why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crstevens619 (talk • contribs) 19:13, 20 June 2019‎ (UTC)

@Crstevens619: Probably because they were previously published images, available elsewhere online with no indication of a free license, and claimed here to be your own work with nothing that would indicate you are the same person who had created these and previously published them. But that's just a guess.
Assuming you are the person who created these, this can by remedied either through the process described at COM:OTRS, which is slow but effective, or by indicating the free license on a site/page obviously controlled by the copyright-holder. Your use here of the phrase "art that he owns" suggests that the claim of "own work" may not have been true.
Patrick Rogel, who nominated them for deletion may have something more to say. In the future, best to first discuss with the person who contacted you on your talk page before bringing this sort of question to a broad forum. - Jmabel ! talk 01:37, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

How to avoid an image from being deleted off wikipedia?

Hi, I am still relatively new to Wikipedia, but not long ago, I had uploaded a picture of Martha Hart into the wikimedia commons, so that the photo could be used on her page. I contacted her to get permission and she sent a letter of permission to use her image to Wikipedia (not me), it got approved and I was able to use it on her page. 3 months later, this image was removed by the User: ImageRemovalBot that removes images that were deleted and not removed from the article. How can I avoid the deletion of the image both in the commons as well as the page? Kgywu (talk) 02:15, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Can I use this image in a book published by an academic press?

Hello,

I am finishing an scholarly book that will be published by Edinburgh University Press. My book will be published in the U.K. and North America. There is an image that appears on wikimedia commons that I would like to include in my book. This one:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lewis_Carroll_-_Henry_Holiday_-_Hunting_of_the_Snark_-_Plate_4_unrestored.png

Can you tell me whether or not I am legally allowed to include this image in the publication of my book?

Thank you, Ryan

Hello Ryan. The image you linked to is old enough that it should be in the public domain in most or all jurisdictions. You can therefore use the image however you please with no restrictions. GMGtalk 13:58, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Changing credit info

I have had a photo flagged as not accepted but I now have the correct credits for the photo but I can't upload a duplicate — Preceding unsigned comment added by Muso81 (talk • contribs) 16:08, 21 June 2019‎ (UTC)

@Muso81: I presume you're referring to File:Milton.jpg or File:TedX.jpg. For File:TedX.jpg, there's still a problem that the source you cite gives the licence as CC BY-NC-ND 2.0, while you've tagged it as CC BY-SA 4.0. NC and ND licences are not allowed on Commons: our licensing policy requires that files here be modifiable and usable commercially. Unless the photographer is willing to use a more liberal licence, that file can't be hosted on Commons. In the case of File:Milton.jpg, the problem is that this picture (which you claim you took yourself last week) appears on the Web in several other places, notably on http://www.miltonline.com (where the Wayback machine says it's been since 2013). You need to somehow demonstrate that you really are the copyright owner. This is likely to be quite complex, but a good start would be to list the date the picture was actually taken, and to upload the full camera-resolution version of the picture. --bjh21 (talk) 16:27, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

A cover of book

Hi everyone. I've just created some pages about a writer's books on Turkish Wikipedia, and I want to add their only cover images. According to publisher note in the book, "Even a part or whole of the work cannot copy by photocopy or any digital way. And it is forbidden to publish the work on the Internet, according to the Copyright law of Turkey.". It is likely clear but I am confused in the situation that I want to share only cover of book, and it does not include any information about the content of book except its title, writer and publisher's name. Moreover, there are lots of book article with the photos of their cover on the Wikipedia. If it is forbidden to publish the books and their some parts, how the other books' covers take a place on the Wikipedia? -- Gargarapalvin (Message 02.44 A.M., 22 June 2019

  • Commons can only host these if they consist of nothing but topography and simple geometric shapes, so they would not be copyrightable. Commons does not allow a "fair use" rationale. Some of the individual Wikipedias do allow this (English does; German doesn't; I have no idea about the Turkish Wikipedia in this respect, you'd have to ask there). But that would not involve Commons at all: that would be an upload to the individual Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 05:08, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Unsure about the license of a scientific art work.

I would like to use this art in the Wikipedia article en:Clathrate gun hypothesis.

It can be located in this scientific paper: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2016RG000534

The paper is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND, but the authors both work for US Geological Survey.

The same art can be found in the USGS website, there it has a lower resolution and lacks the legend, but it's written public domain under it.

What should I do? Write an email to the author asking for clarification? Or just because they work for the USGS should be Public Domain?

Thanks! —Arthurfragoso (talk) 20:09, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Uploaded image under wrong user, need to fix

A friend is working on a Wikipedia article about me in his sandbox. I gave him permission to use an image of which I own the copyright. The image filename is "Stuart Scott's keynote at WESA 2012.jpg". His account is DavidKorn.SpecialProjects and gave me the (c) Stuart Scott, 2012. I own the photo. I paid the photographer, who was working for me.

He uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons under his account when I should have uploaded it under mine (StuartGaia). It was immediately flagged for a potential copyright violation because my son, Joshua Scott, had used it in a GoFundMe page (https://ca.gofundme.com/f/fund-for-stuart039s-healing) since I have cancer, and am trying to overcome it so that I can continue my climate change activism (see http://ScientistsWarning.TV).

We want to delete the file from his account, and put it under mine. I am willing to put it under any of the commons licenses that are appropriate. Please tell me how we fix this problem.

Stuart Scott (a.k.a. StuartGaia) — Preceding unsigned comment added by StuartGaia (talk • contribs) 22:15, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

When you paid the photographer, did you explicitely receive a copyright transfer from them? It is a common misunderstanding that one automatically buys the copyright in the picture when paying for a portrait, but in most jurisdictions the photographer either needs to be an employee for copyright to be transferred automatically, or a transfer may not even be possible at all. Anyhow, in such cases we require a proof of copyright transfer or a permission from the original photographer, which should then be emailed according to the instructions in COM:OTRS. @CanadianUsr19: No, because Wikimedia Commons do not accept files that violate copyright, unless permission from the copyright holder (usually the photographer) is obtained and sent through COM:OTRS. If you can reach her, you could try asking her to take a selfie or be photographed by someone and ask the photographer upload it here directly.--Roy17 (talk) 16:51, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

I contributed a few photos that I personally took to Wikimedia Commons (with these rights:to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work to remix – to adapt the work Under the following conditions: attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. share alike – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original).

Do I have the right to have a file removed and rescind the rights I have granted? If so, how do I do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ivgotit (talk • contribs) 15:04, 23 June 2019‎ (UTC)

All images you uploaded here were released by you under a Creative Commons license. These licenses are irrevocable, so you cannot rescind the rights once you granted a CC licence. As to deleting the images, the last file you uploaded is from 2018, and we usually don't delete any files on the uploader's request if they are older than a few weeks. Please see also Commons:Courtesy deletions. It would be helpful though to know why you would like the files to be removed. De728631 (talk) 15:28, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
Comment I'll just point out that all the images you uploaded are in use on other Wikis, and their editors will have assumed that you would honour the terms of the licence you granted. I'd be very surprised, therefore, if any of these images were to be deleted as a courtesy. Rodhullandemu (talk) 15:43, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

As far as I know, for use in Wikipedia a picture has to be uploaded here. See the rules of Wikipedia. Greetings --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 06:22, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
  • It's not a problem on a copyright level. Beyond that, individual Wikipedias may each have their own policies on what alteration/retouching is permissible. Obviously, if you photoshopped in a person who wasn't really there, that is not acceptable. If you slightly increased contrast, that is. So it's hard to respond to your question as it stands. - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Files flagged for copyright violation

I uploaded two files to Wikimedia Commons, and was notified that they were marked as a possible copyright violation because I included the URL. These photos were taken by me and are free to use, and therefore there is no copyright violation. I included the URL as a source, just as the page editor did for another image of mine that was used here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_City_Casino (I was contacted by a Wikipedia editor and asked for permission to use this image, and I granted that permission, so he included the link to my website.) I was simply trying to do the same thing with the two images I uploaded, as they came from the same site. How do I remove the copyright violation tag? The files are listed below:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westward_Ho_Hotel_and_Casino#/media/File:Westward_Ho_Sign.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourbon_Street_Hotel_and_Casino

  • @Meburke66: At http://www.vegasinpictures.com/, you say "Copyright © 2019 Burke Enterprises" and give no indication of there being any available licenses. And of course we have no automatic way to know that the Meburke66 account is the same "Burke" as that site.
  • If you own the copyright for all of the pictures on that site, and you intend to make all of the pictures available, then the simplest thing to do would be to indicate on that site that the pictures are available under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. If you want to release only specific pictures, you can put a page on that site indicating which images are available under that license (probably best to provide thumbnails as well as filenames) and link it from the relevant Commons pages.
  • Alternatively, you can go through the process described at COM:OTRS. In my experience, that will take longer, though, which is why I make the recommendation in the prior paragraph. - Jmabel ! talk 15:44, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Jmabel, I read.
But the steps to upload here?
And " I don't know how to do that." means that he didn't understood, and what he should do now was not clear for him. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 01:54, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

@ILANA LANSKY: Como isso se aplica à Wikimedia Commons? Rodhullandemu (talk) 15:03, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
Ilana Lanksy,

As is very visible from the photo, the stairway is closed off with barrier and no-entry sign, but I am not sure if it is suitable for "Do not enter signs" category or not. Should I use Category:Rope barriers?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:33, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

@Kai3952: I think it's up to you to decide. IMHO this photo wants to show that the fourth floor of this library is out of bounds, but not to show the kind of signs people find in Taiwan, so I would not add that category.--Roy17 (talk) 12:47, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

What category should that be placed in?

Should Category:Arches in Taiwan be placed in "Arch portals" and "Portals" two categories?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:35, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

No, because Category:Arch portals is a subcategory of Category:Portals, so by COM:OVERCAT, a category should generally go in at most one of those. Moreover, unless Category:Arches in Taiwan in unusually narrow in scope, I'd expect it to fall under Category:Arches (specifically, in Category:Arches by country. --bjh21 (talk) 13:44, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
I am confused, why did you say "unless Category:Arches in Taiwan in unusually narrow in scope"? --Kai3952 (talk) 18:31, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Pinging User:Bjh21 for convenience.廣九直通車 (talk) 05:17, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Based on its name, I'd expect that Category:Arches in Taiwan would contain arches of all sorts. That would make it a subcategory of Category:Arches, but not a subcategory of Category:Arch portals, because it would contain media relating to arches that are not portals. However, it's possible that Category:Arches in Taiwan is poorly named, and it's only meant to contain arch portals (which would be a narrower scope than all arches), in which case it could legitimately be a subcategory of Category:Arch portals, but it should probably then be named Category:Arch portals in Taiwan. --bjh21 (talk) 12:53, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Logos

Hello, I'd like to know when is it possible to upload a logo to commons and when it is not. Some Wikipedia articles about organizations have the organization's logo but some don't because it's not possible. I'd like to know when we can and when we cannot and how to.--SRuizR ¿Need something? 20:06, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

The logo must be either in public domain or released under a free licence or too simple to qualify for copyright protection. Ruslik (talk) 20:09, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Hey SRuizR. Most of the logos here on Commons are uploaded because they fall below the threshold of originality, meaning that they are too simple to be protected under copyright, things like text and simple geometric shapes. More complex logos would have to uploaded locally, for example, to the Spanish Wikipedia itself, according to the rules that project has for including media under a claim of fair use. Some projects allow this more than others, and some projects do not allow it at all. The relevant guidance for es.wiki can be found at es:Wikipedia:Sobre el uso legítimo. GMGtalk 20:12, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
… which can be summed up as saying that the Spanish-language Wikipedia does not allow images on a "fair use" basis. - Jmabel ! talk 22:54, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Is it usual to use the definite article before "Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall"?

I looked at Category:Lincoln Memorial and I see that these categories(Category:Aerial views of the Lincoln Memorial, Category:Construction of the Lincoln Memorial, Category:Dedication of the Lincoln Memorial, Category:Presidents at the Lincoln Memorial, etc) have used "the" in the title. Comment: The Birth of Global Art

Hi,

I submitted an article: The Birth of Global Art. It was not published by your editor, and I had a comment to explain the politic situation. I think some of you are against my article which was backed by outside political forces. When an American politician expressed his opinion in the international arena a month ago, he also inspired from my article to focus on China's policies that means my article was internationally influential.. I think my article has not been published because of the involvement of external political forces, which violates the academic principle of Wikipedia's neutrality.

In addition, I think your website is very complex, it is not easy to find my previous comments, I can’t see if there is any response to my comments so I could not respond. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 达世奇 (talk • contribs) 00:50, 18 June 2019‎ (UTC)

With all due respect to the original poster, I doubt that his/her essay on "The Birth of Global Art" is an important historical document comparable to a resolution of a national legislature, much as I doubt that it was deleted for "political" reasons, rather than because it was not the sort of thing we host here. - Jmabel ! talk 10:08, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

Crop overwrote original file

Hi everyone. I uploaded File:BB Winans and Joe Madison.jpg and proceeded to crop out BeBe Winans. Unfortunately this did not create a new file but instead overwrote the original. Is that because I failed to change the name of the file? I usually get a warning about that. Either way, we now no longer have a photo of Joe Madison, and I cannot transfer the original from FlickR again because the site believes we have the image already. Therefore I beg for assistance :) Surtsicna (talk) 09:17, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

  • @Surtsicna: I have reverted to the original image. You can use CropTool again: this time, please be careful to choose to save to a different name rather than to overwrite the original. - Jmabel ! talk 10:11, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

Flags of Morocco and the SADR over Western Sahara map.png

File:Flags of Morocco and the SADR over Western Sahara map.png has been overwritten so many times that I dont know which version to revert to. Is anyone familiar with history of West Sahara and Morocco?--Roy17 (talk) 16:51, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Can't we just delete it and replace any interwiki instances with File:Western Sahara conflict map.svg? The borders in the png file are oversimplified and the colour scheme is an eye sore. Most of the time the strip of land in the south and southwest is coloured blue (Morocco), while it is part of the SADR, i.e. brown. The earliest versions even had the SADR flag mirrored. In other words: plenty of errors. --HyperGaruda (talk) 18:10, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
That's much better. Thanks for the suggestion!--Roy17 (talk) 19:03, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
While HyperGaruda is probably right, I think a COM:OVERWRITE analysis says that it should be reverted to the first version. Specifically:
  • The version uploaded by Vispec on 1 December 2007 was reverted by Gandal el gris, and later by Aboyado and Reisio. I can't find any evidence that Gandal el gris ever withdrew their objection to this version.
  • The version uploaded by Rekaf on 24 December 2007 (with no flags at all) was reverted by Koavf on 9 March 2008.
  • The version uploaded by Koavf on 9 March 2008 (with the corrected flag) was reverted by Kailo70 immediately afterwards, and later by Isno and CHV. Kailo70 has made no other edits, so I don't think they've withdrawn their objection.
  • The version uploaded by Xiamipi on 7 June 2009 (with Chinese text) was reverted by B1mbo.
  • The version uploaded by Rülpsmann on 9 March 2010 (with corrected colours) was reverted by Xlamipi (sic). That's their most recent edit, so I don't think they've withdrawn their objections.
It's possible that some of the reverters have withdrawn their objections, but if they have they haven't done it anywhere obvious. Technically no-one has reverted Vispec's first two uploads (because Vispec overwrote them), but I think they were implicitly objected to by Gandal el gris. As a result, I think all the uploads after the first still have outstanding objections and should be reverted. --bjh21 (talk) 23:54, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello, PolBr erased all my contribution on the lorette: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorette_(femme)#Origine_du_nom As soon as I showed the evidence of what I said. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discussion:Lorette_(femme)#Orientation_de_l_Article As I show, this contributor says anything and in addition it completely erases my contribution when I give him evidence. Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by La Mesure de l'Excellence (talk • contribs) 07:37, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

CAPTCHA issues

My CAPTCHA is not verified even though my answers were correct, I cannot upload my image. Rajabouzeid2001 (talk) 17:37, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

@Rajabouzeid2001: I guess you may try again, until you get the CAPTCHA right. This website does not restrict retrying CAPTCHA, as far as I know.--Roy17 (talk) 19:03, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Checking successfully uploaded file

How I check my uploaded photos progress and Whether photos have been uploaded successfully or not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prasadani1988 (talk • contribs) 18:44, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

@Prasadani1988: here you are: Special:ListFiles/Prasadani1988. On the upper right corner, buttons from the right are log out, contributions (basically everything you did on Commons) and uploads (everything you uploaded).--Roy17 (talk) 19:03, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
