Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.

Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

ORTS help[edit]

Hi VKras,

if you want to upload an image that is neither your own work nor in the public domain, you need to obtain a permission under a free license (which must be Commons-compatible) from the author or rightsholder. If this image is not available on Flickr or another platform, which shows the avaiable license, then you need to contact the author or rightsholder directly. For such requests we have Commons:Email templates that should be used. The author or rightsholder needs to send his/her permission email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org where our OTRS volunteers will process the permission and validate it.

The best sequence of events for you as the uploader is: first ask the author or rightsholder if he/she is willing to give you such a permission. If you get a positive signal, then upload the image and add {{OTRS pending}} to the image page. Then send the author or rightsholder the permission mail, using the above mentioned template and filling in the URL of uploaded image. Thereafter you have to wait 1) whether the author or rightsholder really issues a permission, and 2) for the rather overworked OTRS volunteers to process the permission which take quite some time. --Túrelio (talk) 21:50, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Hi. Could you please explain why you have renamed this file again? This is not an obvious error, instead it is an edit war led by User:Бучач-Львів, in this case by your proxy. Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Renaming files with an apostrophe in the name[edit]

Dear VKras,

Yesterday, I requested the renaming of the following file from Anniversaire de la mort d'Adolphe Thiers.jpg to Anniversaire de la mort d’Adolphe Thiers.jpg, but you rejected my request.

I am asking such renaming because I uploaded hundred of files, and some have an apostrophe in the name (this is frequent in French).

The problem is that in some file names I have the English apostrophe ('), and in others I have the French apostrophe (’). This is not a problem except for the ZoomViewer gadget (which is enabled by default on Commons for images bigger than 2 megapixels).

ZoomViewer is working if there is a French apostrophe (’) in the name, but is not working if there is an English apostrophe (') in the name.

Here some of my files with an apostrophe in the name:

English apostrophe (') ==> ZoomViewer NOK

French apostrophe (’) ==> ZoomViewer OK

I have posted a message hoping this problem could be solved, but not sure it will be. See here.

For me the renaming is the most easy solution. Or else I will have to re-upload all these files with the correct name.

Can I request again such renames?

Dates in filenames[edit]

While a date in a filename may not strictly be necessary, I should recommend to leave it in, just in case a similarly named file exists or is uploaded. This avoids duplication of names and ambiguity. --Schlosser67 (talk) 07:28, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed your preference, but see above: a date may not be necessary, but it can be helpful. Just something to keep in mind, not a strict advice. It's something I picked up at work. Computer memory is cheap nowadays, so you can keep longer and more specific filenames over shorter and more ambiguous ones. It may avoid another instance of renaming. Recent moves[edit]

Hi,

You have recently been moving a series of files mass uploaded from Flickr as part of the Internet Archive bookplates upload project. This was of significant size for commons, resulting in 478,000 uploads. The naming is harmonized and planned, including the date and original Flickr ID. Your moves are both deleting that information from the page names, and you are moving them without a redirect.

Please reverse all of these moves and restore the original names, per the guidance in COM:FR for harmonization. Sadly the justification of criterion 2, that the names are meaningless or ambiguous is neither correct, nor a rationale to remove essential data from the filename.

My concern is compliance with COM:FR and any moves that break batch project naming conventions, which includes the unique identifier which helps find potential matches without a lot of processing. If you are unable to move these back, I shall ask for help.

Just examining my own uploads listed below, there are two problems. Firstly the moves are not justified against FR, the criterion quoted does not apply, and secondly you are misusing the move without redirect right. You could use "Restore previous name". There may be a case for better names so long as the unique identifiers are kept in the names; but these are long hosted files, and there has to be a very good case about the names being positively misleading to start moving them. Multiple DR Nominations[edit]

When you nominate more than three or four files uploaded by the same person or in the same category, you will find it much easier to use Visual File Change rather than nominating them individually as you did on October 27. After you enter the reason for the DR, it takes only one mouse click per file to nominate them. It also saves time for the closing Admin -- they also need only one mouse click per file, rather than three if they are separate. . Jim . . . Renaming Files[edit]

Please do not rename (move) files that have a DR on them as you did at File:Reproduction dessin de Malo-Renault, La Bretagne Touristique, E Dacier 1927.jpg.

If the DR results in Delete, then if you leave a redirect, only the redirect will be deleted. If you do not leave a redirect, then the closing Admin will see that the file has already been deleted and take no action on it.

Similar confusion arises if the file is kept. Since most DRs result in deletions, it also saves your time and that of the closing Admin if you don't confuse the matter.

Привіт!

З 1 по 30 вересня вже традиційно пройде українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. З найважливіших змін цього року:

у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» — збільшився додатковий бал за фотографії пам'яток (якщо світлин пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено, то можна отримати 21 бал.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року теж є спецномінації «Єврейська спадщина», «Млини» та «Відео». Також є спеціальна номінація від проєкту «Via Regia Ukraine» — у ній автоматично беруть участь світлини всіх пам’яток міст України, через які пролягає Via Regia — Дубно, Рівне, Острог, Львів, Броди, Городок (Львівська область), Луцьк, Володимир-Волинський, Радомишль, Житомир та Київ. Вікі любить пам'ятки 2020 в Україні: залишилося два тижні! / Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Ukraine: two weeks are left![edit]

Привіт!

Українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки» триватиме ще два тижні, до 30 вересня!

За перші два тижні учасники завантажили понад 16 тисяч фото українських пам’яток. Це поки найбільший результат серед усіх 29 країн, які цьогоріч організовують конкурс. Свої роботи на українську частину конкурсу вже подали 239 авторів, половина із них вперше долучилися до змагання. На знімках представлені пам’ятки з усіх регіонів України. Загалом сфотографовано 5568 об’єктів із конкурсних списків.

Найменш представленими поки є Луганська (69 фото 45 об’єктів) і Херсонська (81 фото 38 об’єктів) області та місто Севастополь (136 фото 39 об’єктів). Якщо у вас (чи у ваших друзів та знайомих) є світлини з цих регіонів — без вагань долучайтеся до фотозмагання!

У рамках спеціальної номінації «Єврейська спадщина» завантажено понад 650 світлин 126 пам'яток, з яких знімки 42 — завантажено вперше. Якщо ваш населений пункт має об'єкти єврейської культурної спадщини, але їх нема у списках, напишіть нам, щоб ми їх додали до списків!

Спеціальна номінація «Млини» — понад 640 фото 144 об'єктів, знімки 44 — завантажено вперше. Загалом база млинів зараз нараховує понад 615 об'єктів, і вона постійно доповнюється.

Вперше цього року ми втілюємо спеціальну номінацію від проєкту «Via Regia Ukraine» — на жаль, ще зовсім нема світлин із Бродів та Радомишля. І з Житомира є тільки 7 світлин, а з міста Рівного — 8 фото.

У спеціальній номінації «Відео» — понад 20 робіт.

Попереду ще два тижні конкурсу. Встигніть долучитися самі та запрошуйте друзів.

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Вікі любить пам'ятки 2021 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Ukraine[edit]

З 1 по 30 вересня вже традиційно пройде українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже вдесяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. Як і того року — у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» можна отримати 21 бал за фотографії об'єктів, якщо світлин цієї пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року вперше будуть окремо виділені фото з повітря (дронами, квадрокоптерами тощо) — у спеціальній номінації «Аерофото». Для того, щоб робота потрапила на спецномінацію потрібно вибрати її у Завантажувачі.

Також вперше проводиться спеціальна номінація «Пам'ятки Подесення», знову пройдуть спецномінації «Відео», «Єврейська спадщина», «Млини», «Пам'ятки національно-визвольної боротьби» та «Via Regia Ukraine». Для участі світлин у цих спецномінаціях не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — світлини зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

Важливо! Цього року відбулася адміністративно-територіальна реформа. Однак, ми проводимо конкурс ще за попереднім адміністративно-територіальним устроєм. Ми почали роботу над створенням списків з новим поділом, але вона ще не є завершена. Ви можете користуватися тими новими списками, що вже є, якщо потрібно відшукати пам'ятку за новим поділом (деякі ОДА вже почали присилати у такому форматі), але пам'ятайте, що нові списки ще не є повними.

Нагадуємо, що до 30 вересня включно можна вантажити світлини та відео культурної спадщини України до національного етапу міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»!

Зараз Україна посідає 3-є місце за кількістю завантажених світлин, поступаючись Російській Федерації та Німеччині. За першу половину місяця було завантажено світлини пам'яток із усіх регіонів України, але частина із них є дуже погано представлена. Севастополь зараз представлений тільки однією пам'яткою і одним фото, Крим — 12 пам'яток і 51 фото. Детальніше — у таблиці:

Цього року у конкурсі є вісім спеціальних номінацій:

«Аерофото» — для фото з повітря (зроблені дронами, квадрокоптерами тощо). Для того, щоб робота потрапила на спецномінацію потрібно вибрати її у Завантажувачі;
«Відео» — для відеосюжетів з пам'ятками;
«Єврейська спадщина» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;

Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started[edit]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015, Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you had already uploaded a file this year, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2022.

Долучіться до опитування — допоможіть визначити, як проводити конкурс «Вікі любить пам’ятки» у 2022 році[edit]

Вітаємо! Ви отримуєте це повідомлення, бо брали участь в українській частині міжнародного конкурсу «Вікі любить пам’ятки» у минулі роки. Зараз організаційна команда конкурсу вирішує, як проводити його під час повномасштабної війни в Україні.

Ми розуміємо, що цього року ми не зможемо провести конкурс у звичному форматі — зокрема тому, що фотографування об'єктів в Україні зараз ускладнене міркуваннями безпеки. Однак наша місія із документування української культурної спадщини є як ніколи важливою, тому розглядаємо варіанти, як можна провести конкурс у обмеженому форматі.

Для цього хочемо запитати поради у спільноти конкурсу. Просимо приділити 5—7 хвилин (не пізніше середи, 6 липня), щоби висловити свою думку.

Цього року українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки» пройде з 1 по 31 жовтня — через російське вторгнення в Україну також довелося змінити умови: тільки світлини зроблені до 23 лютого 2022 року включно будуть прийматися в основній частині конкурсу.

В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже водинадцяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки» вже почалася — за 5 днів фотозмагання Україна вийшла на 12-е місце за кількістю світлин у світі. Не кількістю єдиною, звісно, але гарно було б не надто сильно відстати від російської частини конкурсу, і хоча б потрапити до почесних топ-5.

Цього року вперше у конкурсі є спеціальна номінація «Фотоплівка» — на неї можна подавати скани світлин, зроблених на фотоплівці — мова може йти й про скани самої фотоплівки і скани з віддрукованих знімків із неї. Ця спецномінація покликана мотивувати оцифровувати й ділитися своїми фотоархівами: частина об'єктів уже виглядає дуже відмінно, а частина — більше не існує… Враховуючи сучасну ситуацію із російським вторгненням і можливість потенційної втрати таких фотоархівів, ця спецномінація — актуальна. Врахуйте, що для того, щоб світлина потрапила на спецномінацію, потрібно вибрати відповідне поле у Завантажувачі.

Автори світлин маловідомих пам'яток України зможуть позмагатися за відзнаку від «Україна Інкогніта».

Також уже традиційно пройде спецномінація «Відео» — для участі робіт у цій спецномінації не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — роботи зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Ще 3 дні! Вікі любить пам'ятки 2022 в Україні триває до 31 жовтня / Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine[edit]

Привіт! Сподіваємося, що ви та ваша родина у безпеці. Нагадуємо, що залишилося три дні до завершення конкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки», і якщо у вас є можливість взяти участь у конкурсі цього року — долучайтеся!

Трохи статистики за результатами чотирьох тижнів конкурсу:

завантажено понад 11000 світлин, які зображують майже 3700 об’єктів культурної спадщини;
- з них фотографії 180 пам'яток — вперше подані на конкурс;
понад 500 світлин подано у спецномінації «Фотоплівка»;
вже більше 220 учасників та учасниць;
- з них більше 130 — зареєструвалися вже під час конкурсу.

Найменш представлені регіони — Севастополь (1 фото), Донецька (19), Миколаївська (20), Кіровоградська (58), Крим (72), Херсонська (74) та Луганська (80). Конкурсні списки за регіонами можна переглянути тут: списки пам'яток.

Привіт! Сподіваємося, що у Вас та Ваших рідних усе максимально добре. Нагадуємо, що конкурс триває до 31 жовтня. За перший тиждень конкурсу в українській частині конкурсу завантажено понад 4000 фото, взяли участь майже 90 учасників.

Важливо! Через російське вторгнення в Україну також довелося змінити умови: тільки роботи зняті до 30 червня 2023 року включно будуть прийматися на конкурс. Єдиний виняток — спецномінація «Інтер'єри» можна подавати світлини без обмежень за датою створення.

Привіт! Сподіваємося, що у Вас та Ваших рідних усе максимально добре. Нагадуємо, що конкурс ще триває трохи більше тижня, до 31 жовтня, тож у Вас є ще можливість приєднатися.

У конкурсі є серйозне обмеження за часом створення фото- та відеоматерілів — тільки роботи зняті до 30 червня 2023 року включно приймаються. Однак, є виняток — спецномінація «Інтер'єри», де можна подавати файли, які зроблені й під час конкурсу. Також, якщо є, можна відсканувати світлини, зроблені плівковим фотоапаратом на спецномінацію «Фотоплівка». Усі номінації та спецномінації перелічено тут).

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, Wiki Science Competition 2019 and Wiki Science Competition 2021, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2023 has started in almost all the countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.
