Is there a way to find which subjects need illustrations?

I am an illustrator and I would like to make contributions to wikimedia commons! How can I find subjects that need illustrations? Thanks for any help or suggestions. -Joe — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlert~commonswiki (talk • contribs) 05:05, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Commons:Picture requests may have some relevant things, though of course it is mostly photo requests.
  • You can look at random Wikipedia articles looking of those that need illustrations. Do keep in mind, though, we can't accept works that derive from a copyrighted work so, for example, you can't take someone else's copyrighted photo, do a drawing based on that photo, and submit it here. That will be just as encumbered as the photo itself. - Jmabel ! talk 05:18, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
@Jlert~commonswiki: You can also start reading at en:Category:Articles and see where your interests take you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:26, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your response! I have tried to look for pages that list needed illustrations. And I did find this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_requested_images_by_subject. But I found the subsequent sub link pages a bit hard to decipher. I have several times come to wikimedia commons and tried to figure out how I could contribute. And I have uploaded two illustrations. But for the most part I have not yet found out how I can be useful.--Jlert~commonswiki (talk) 05:53, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

@Jlert~commonswiki: you might also have a look at the Illustration workshop at the Graphic Lab here and the corresponding page at enWP. Most of the requests are for repairing, redrawing, combining, or updating files we already have in some form, but there are some for new content as well.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:09, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Photos of Sidney Poitier & Stuart Eugene Wallace from the set of In The Heat Of The Night

Hello, I recently visited the Roscoe Misselhorn Art Gallery in Sparta, Illinois. There are a couple areas where photos, newspaper articles and various movie memorabilia are located. I was permitted to take numerous photos on my cell phone and would like to add some of the photos to the page(s) of Stuart Eugene Wallace, as well as create/update a page for Jazan Winona Wallace, who were both in the film as extras, but had somewhat pivotal roles. Please advise if someone can help me with these tasks. Thank you. Violasbg9 (talk) 20:05, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Violasbg9

Transfer collection/Album from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons

I have 4903 images on Flickr linked to Open Plaques and have been trying to transfer to WikiMedia Commons. I have pasted the Flickr URL for my group and all images other than mine appear to have been prepared for transfer. I have been using the URL - https://www.flickr.com/groups/openplaques/pool/111842568@N03 These photos are linked to the Open Plaques website, for example as this - http://openplaques.org/plaques/50874 I understand that my images and their links to the site can be transferred, but so far this has not be possible. I have been using the Magnus' Flickr2Commons upload tool, and filing in the first entry - https://tools.wmflabs.org/flickr2commons/#/ to no avail Any advice as to how to transfer my collection would be most welcome, Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nick.Thirteen (talk • contribs) 23:52, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

How do I post a photo from Wikipedia Commons to a Wikipedia page/article?

The photo I uploaded to Commons appears only as reference (footnote) on the page/article I'm trying to edit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by July Edwards (talk • contribs) 00:12, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
On en:Henry Benbridge? Something to do with the way the images on the right are flowing I guess. I'd try moving it up in the source page so that it's among the other images. --ghouston (talk) 00:36, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
@July Edwards: if the photo you are referring to is Benbridge's self-portrait, it does not look like you have uploaded that to Commons, considering your upload record, the latest of which dates back to 2011. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:52, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Nevermind, I see you uploaded it to Wikipedia instead. You forgot two closing brackets when adding the image to the article. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:57, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

I get an error uploading a self-made flowchart

Hi.

Making a page at Wiki I tried to upload 2 flowchart files (in .png format) that I've made on my own, but I got the following error: "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

I've also checked the link introduced in the error message; and my question is how images other than those taken by a camera like charts could be ever uploaded! unfortunately, I can't even upload my chart files here to clarify my problem.

I appreciate your help and support.

Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by IIInvestorsA (talk • contribs) 08:17, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

How do I upload a screenshot that are codes — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katiekat6969 (talk • contribs) 12:17, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Most screenshots are not eligible to be on Commons, because they usually contain elements copyrighted by third parties.
  • I have no idea what it means say a screenshot "is/are codes".
  • Technically, you upload a screenshot exactly the same way as any other image. - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Also see COM:SCREENSHOT. If you're talking about source code, then screenshots of freely licensed software or its code can be tagged using {{Free screenshot}} and the license of the software. clpo13(talk) 19:41, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Denderah Vittorio (talk • contribs) 18:48, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

This would appear to be about:
  • File:Ruvu.PNG
    • At a glance, this is a very small (161px × 201px), oddly cut off, low-res version of a diagram with 6 sub-images about blowing and cutting glass. If this is, indeed, your own work it still was so low-resolution as not to be very useful.
  • File:Owen Shroyer.PNG
  • File:Dcjxbk.PNG
    • Odd collage-y thing, not clear about where it's source images come from (did you take the photos involved?). Not clear what it depicts (description was "Dark Tourist"), and source given (as on many of these) simply as "Belgique" ["Belgium"], which is not very informative. If they are your own work, then the source should assert that. Saying what country they are from is not useful source information.
  • File:Farmlands.Documentaire.PNG
    • Another heavily processed, low-res collage-y thing, text "Farmlands" written onto the image, and the description is just "Image for the article Farmlands in French," which hardly clarifies things.
  • File:Jkhbj.PNG
    • Oddly named photo of a house, again rather low-res (543px × 408px), says author =David Farrier and again gives only a place ("San Diego, Californie"). No license stated. How could this not be a copyvio?
  • File:Fesdc.PNG
    • Again poorly named, although that's not a reason for deletion. Source given as "Google" which is certainly not valid (it's like saying "I found it online someplace"). "author=Personne", but surely someone drew it. Might be simple enough geometric shape to be ineligible for copyright, but you didn't claim anything like {{PD-ineligible}}; instead you had no license tag at all.
In short, I'm not surprised to see these deleted. I know all of that may sound a bit harsh, but I hope it helps explain what's going on. If someone wants to translate or summarize this in French that would be welcome. - Jmabel ! talk 18:21, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
@Denderah Vittorio: l'analyse de Jmabel ci-dessus en bref: votre images ont des dimensions/résolutions si petites, qu'on doute soit l'utilité, soit la vérité de votre déclaration de leur origine. Hello, first time participating in commons. I uploaded a new version of a graph and it does show up on top. But when I click on it to see it full-screen, I see the old version. Is this normal? @Judith Sunrise: it seems fine from here. The servers can be slow to update sometimes, but since you say the preview was good in this case, I suspect it was your local cache that needed purging. Try reloading the image or whatever command empties the cache on your browser. @HollanderMGMT: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summaries intact. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. If you change the summaries or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:36, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

I received permission from the author

I uploaded File:Maymay.jpg for Maymay's article in the English Wikipedia. I saw a picture of her on the author's instagram account. I send her an email asking permission to use her photo using this template I found.

She then replied saying: "Yes sure, my photo may be used for Maymay’s article. Thanks!".

I then forwarded the email to the OTRS team, and I'm currently awaiting response. Would that be sufficient? Thank you for your assistance.Subwaymuncher (talk) 03:36, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Permission to use in an article, even an article on a sister project such as the English Wikipedia, is not relevant for Commons. Given that the image is not public domain, we need a free license conformant with the requirements stated at Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain. Also:
  1. While I gather that there are occasional exceptions, the OTRS team usually wants email to come directly from the copyright holder of the image, not from a third party such as a Wikipedia editor.
  2. Normally, the copyright would remain with the photographer, unless that has been explicitly transferred in writing or implicitly under the terms of a contract such as an employment contract (or maybe you are already dealing with the correct person in these terms, hard to tell from what you wrote, maybe "author" here means "photographer").

I would like to add my profile to Wikipedia. How do I do that? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 130.76.112.29 (talk) 19:52, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

If you intend to participate in one of the many language editions of Wikipedia, the first step would be to go to https://www.wikipedia.org/. You are currently on Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media files used by the Wikipedia projects, other Wikimedia Foundation projects, and others. Once there, you can create an account and a user page. See, for example, en:Wikipedia:User pages for the English Wikipedia edition's guidelines on this. Note that this is intended to facilitate interaction between genuine project participants. It is not intended for social network style profiles or self-promotion. Again, since your question seems to be about Wikipedia rather than Commons, if you have any follow-up questions, I would recommend asking them at the relevant site's help desk. Image deleted on Flickr

Hi, folks. I've been editing en.wiki and pt.wiki for several years now, but I'm still a newbie here on WikiCommons. So I have a question that is maybe dump, but anyway. The image below, was taken from a Flickr account. However, it was deleted from Flickr, so how to attest that it's free to use here on Wikimedia Project? It seems a Copyvio to me, but as I said, I`m a newbie here on WikiCommons.

--SirEdimon (talk) 21:18, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

The licence review is an independent check that the file had a particular licence on Flickr at some point. There's a watermark on the file, but the Flickr user's https://www.flickr.com/photos/jhonief/ other uploads have the same mark. Is there any particular reason to think it's a copyvio? E.g., published elsewhere with a different claim of authorship? --ghouston (talk) 21:30, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
Ghouston Thanks for the reply. I was just confused about it. Thanks for clarifying. So, the image is ok to stay and to be used?--SirEdimon (talk) 21:36, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
It seems so. This happens to files from Flickr occasionally. Sometimes users delete their accounts on Flickr entirely, but the licenses are considered valid (and irrevocable) if they were confirmed by licence review. --ghouston (talk) 21:40, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
There's a small problem with the license: the uploader used cc-by-2.0, but the review said it was cc-by-sa-2.0, so maybe it should be changed to the latter. --ghouston (talk) 21:45, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
I don't think that's correct. FlickreviewR 2 marked the image reviewlicense=cc-by-2.0, which matches the licence tag, but for some reason it added a positional parameter of "cc-by-sa-2.0", which {{FlickreviewR}} treats as the author name. --bjh21 (talk) 14:02, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes, either the template changed or the bot was misusing it. FlickreviewR 2 actually changed the license and set "status=passed_changed" as well, but that gives a warning that the reviewed license is different to the license (that it set itself). It would be easily fixed, but then I'd be tampering with a license review. --ghouston (talk) 00:31, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
I could put the original uploader's original, unverified and probably incorrect, license back and the warning would then make sense, but the license would probably be wrong. I could also change "status=passed_changed" to "status=passed" but that would be tampering with the review. --ghouston (talk) 00:42, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
What it should look like is something like on File:Galerie_Vivienne,_12_March_2015.jpg, where a different template User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-pass-change is used. --ghouston (talk) 00:47, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
The bot is still doing the same thing at present, e.g., on File:President Donald Trump in Warsaw in Poland Warsaw Uprising Monument.jpg. Perhaps Zhuyifei1999 can take a look? --ghouston (talk) 00:55, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
Wow, I never noticed there's this bug. Fixed --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:23, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Somehow the files with the bad parameter will need to be identified and fixed. --ghouston (talk) 10:37, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

I have tried three times in recent days to upload a photo I took, using the Commons Android app. All three attempts have failed. I have encountered similar problems in the past, and have sometimes had to uninstall and reinstall the app in order to upload. I would donate more photos if the app worked smoothly. Can you offer any advice? Thanks. Cullen328 (talk) 19:27, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

@Cullen328: I had similar problems along with crashes when using the regular version, until last month. The Beta test version 2.9.0, which has been available for about a month, has behaved much more smoothly. As it happens, I normally also carry a real camera, hence make sparing use of the app, mainly for instant gratification and more precise locations. I also use the Wikishootme site https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikishootme/original.html to find what's missing in whatever place I'm walking. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:53, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, @Jim.henderson: . I will install the newer version. Cullen328 (talk) 20:10, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Copyright

Hi,

a few weeks ago i uploaded logo of "I liga polska w piłce nożnej". And it was delete. I want ask to know how i can upload logo? We have all copyright of this, becouse i'm working for this organisation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by B.wisniewski (talk • contribs) 09:53, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

  • If you uploaded it on Commons, it must have been under a different account, because you don't have any deleted edits on Commons.
  • Commons accepts only materials that are either public domain or offered under a sufficiently free license.
  • Assuming the logo is complex enough to be eligible for copyright, it is necessary to provide a specific free license, such as {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
  • Assuming that the club owns the copyright (not a given: by default that would belong to the artist who designed it), then (since the logo has previously been published) there are basically two ways for the club to provide that license:
    1. Go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. OTRS is pretty backlogged, and this might take months to complete, but it will eventually solve the matter
    1. A more rapid approach: on a public-facing website that clearly belongs to the club, they can indicate the license under which the logo is made available. Cite that (with a link) as the basis for permission when uploading, and apply the same license on Commons.

System issues.

Hello,

I'm new to wiki and have been working hard cleaning up articles and move them to their correct places, but I'm having difficulty moving a cat and was blocked doing so. At first I got a time-out prompt stating that I could only move so many items at a time and that I had to wait a few minutes before I could move items again (for safety reasons). I waited as requested and tried to move category Genesis Motors to Genesis Motor the correct name listed on Hyundai Motor Company's documentation and the system ended up flagging me and now I can't move items anymore on commons.wiki. I haven't checked the normal wiki section yet because I haven't had this issue over there.

VerifiedFixes (talk) 11:00, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi VerifiedFixes,
"I'm new to wiki", welcome to the Wikimedia Commons,
You are new here you, so you should request to move pages, because this task may involve several steps.
And that's what may happened, you are unable to move pages here. No one blocked you.
"Normal wiki" is kind.. yeah, bad. If you are trying to say that at some Wikipedia, probably English Wikipedia you didn't have problems yet, is because they have different rules.
See this , is a request to change the name, but you didn't provide a source, and you didn't wait to a mover to evaluate it.
Just people with "move tool" can move some types of pages, to not create problems as you created... here, here, ...
Use the talk page before try to move things, especially categories.
-- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 20:57, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
Rodrigo.Argenton,
I explained earlier in my post, that I've been moving and correcting post here in (commons). I only brought up being able to move and edit on the "other wikis" earlier, just in case someone told me that my cookies were the issue.
Whatever problems you saw were based on the main cat here, if you check the log, I was flagged several times (before I knew how to properly use the move tool). You will also see, that I DID in fact call a bot (it never showed) and that was days ago. I came back to move it myself AFTER I successfully moved several of cats to their correct placements, and that's when I was warned to take a break before I could move said cat.
VerifiedFixes (talk) 23:55, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
@VerifiedFixes: welcome to Commons. Please see COM:RENCAT; it usually takes 7 days (or longer, if Gremlins have been mucking with the robots) for the bot to rename things. Only those granted the "file movers" User Permission can rename files and pages. Please also try to be patient with the restrictions imposed by the platform; they're here to protect the system from malicious or novice users, and poorly-configured bots/scripts. The system has rate-limiting built-in to prevent potential abuse/misuse. If the system says take a break: grab a cup of tea, tunnel down the rabbit-hole of Help Pages, wait a while, and try again later. --dsprc (talk) 05:23, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

Name already exists

Hello, There is already an article under the name of Tobias Young, dedicated to a painter. Though there is an IFBB Pro and a celebrity fitness model name Tobias Young (https://www.optimumnutrition.com/en-us/athletes/ifbb-pro/tobias-young)as well. I am looking forward to write a Wikipedia article under the name Tobias Young for a fitness celebrity, please do let me know if its possible and if so how can I do it if the name is already assigned to a someone else. on the other hand if its not possible what are my alternatives ?

Hi Naved90,
You are at Wikimedia Commons, not on a Wikipedia, we are siblings, but not the same :D, you can do your question here: Wikipedia:Help desk to have a better answer.
A general answer, you will have to create something like "Tobias Young (model)", but is better you ask there before create.

Uploading newspaper front page

I did manage to upload this image:Wisconsin State Journal front page, Sep 4, 1952, but didn't get the licensing right. I know this is permissible because there are newspaper front page images all over Wikipedia. Any help straightening this out will be much appreciated.

@MikeB17: Based on the deletion summary, I think you need to upload it directly to Wikipedia instead, with a fair-use rationale for the article where you want to display it. Here on Commons everything needs a free licence.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:33, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Weird error uploading an image

Anyone faced this "An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-swift-codfw"." error uploading images? This appeared to me at the end of the upload. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 18:44, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Rodrigo, it sounds like a bug in the upload handler (though I've not seen with images, only large media files). If it persists (they're usually transient) you may want to file a ticket over on Phabricator so Devs can look into it. --dsprc (talk) 05:43, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Dsprc, thank you
The files are online, the error show up, but didn't affect the upload. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 11:38, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Good to hear, as the process at Phabricator is a bit technical and rather Byzantine, to say the least; it requires a certain level of masochism to see to fruition. (I'm surprised this dynamically-generated, rickety, bucket of bolts stays online like it does. An engineering marvel, or miracle, as it were.) --dsprc (talk) 19:33, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

New version of "Cosmic ray flux versus particle energy" image

Hi all,

I've produced a new version of the image Cosmic ray flux versus particle energy to include recent scientific discoveries. I'm the author of the original file, but that was 12 years ago (almost to the day!) when images were still uploaded directly to Wikipedia. I'm not allowed to replace the image here on the Commons (new user?) so if someone else could kindly do it for me that would be highly appreciated. The new version can be found here: File:Cosmic ray flux versus particle energy (2018 version).svg

Thanks!

Image uploading

Hello.

I am creating my first page in wikipedia, and I am having trouble uploading an image.

When I try to upload it, I get an error saying that Wikipedia was not able to determine whether or not the image can be used:

"We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

Why is this happening?

This is a logo for a company page that I am creating in wikipedia, and I don't understand how to resolve this issue.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alfasoftpt (talk • contribs) 10:46, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Don't upload logos as JPG oder PNG files but rather as SVGs. Select one good logo and don't try to upload every possible variation. --Magnus (talk) 11:14, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
@Tsungam: I tried different variations as one of them worked and the others didn't, and I was trying to see if there was a pattern. None of them were SVG, so I don't understand why some get through and the others don't.
Alfasoftpt: You may wish to read Commons:Guidance for paid editors, which includes information on this topic. LX (talk, contribs) 11:22, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
@Alfasoftpt: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to have the logo designer/photographer send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:07, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I am trying to upload 2 different images. One of them is the logo, for which I have the Illustrator file, and I can upload an image with greater resolution. I am also trying to upload a shop picture and the resolution I have is 2048x1365. It's not the greatest quality I have seen, but it's a good quality image and the photographer does not have it at a higher quality. Why is this image also being blocked? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alfasoftpt (talk • contribs) 14:56, 11 January 2019‎ (UTC)

You weren't yet using our Upload Wizard.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:10, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
@Alfasoftpt: regarding the logo, Illustrator can export artwork in SVG format, which for most logos & graphics produces a much smaller file than any raster format, and with better rendering & editability.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:30, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Kipi Uploader: Overwriting issues

Hello, I am currently using the Kipi uploader to get my pictures from my hard drive up to Wikimedia Commons. This worked out reasonably well up to now. Today I encountered the following issue:: I uploaded a file with a name that existed already on Commons (also uploaded by me at an earlier stage). On my hard drive both files were in different folders, so there was no clash, but here on Commons there are no folders, so the old file got overwritten. The Kipi uploader did not provide me any warning. So the questions I have now are the following: How can I avoid such overwritings in the future? How can I most efficiently get the overwritten and the new picture into two different files?

The files currently concerned are: Neuss-0038.jpg Neuss-0036.jpg Neuss-0034.jpg Neuss-0032.jpg Neuss-0013.jpg Neuss-0010.jpg Neuss-0009.jpg Neuss-0004.jpg Neuss-0003.jpg Neuss-0002.jpg Neuss-0001.jpg

Tracking the number of downloads of a particular file

Hi Wikimedia Commons help desk, I was wondering if there is a way to track how many times my uploaded files have been downloaded. Is this possible? Thanks, Christine — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christinelmiller (talk • contribs) 20:10, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Christinelmiller: As far as I know, there are no statistics on how many times a thumbnail of a file used in various Wikimedia projects has been viewed or how many times the full resolution version has been downloaded, but as far as the number of times the file description page has been viewed, there is a link on each page called "Page information" which has statistics on page views in the past 30 days and contains further links to tools supporting longer time periods. Why does File:Wikipedian-in-Residence_Scope_Diagram_Page_1.png have a black background

Hi all

I think that File:Wikipedian-in-Residence_Scope_Diagram_Page_1.png is supposed to have a white background but for some reason on my computer it has a black background on Outreach here (it has a transparent background because its a .png), but a white background here on Commons sometimes (but not always). @John Cummings: I have no idea what’s happening at your end, but the file itself has a white background (no transparency—I downloaded it to make sure), and the thumbnails here and on the Outreach & file pages all look that way from my end.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:56, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

How to link gallery category to wiki?

I was looking at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Kutn%C3%A1_Hora & seeing only one photo of the Jesuit College decided to upload my own... Nonetheless, in trying to figure out how to move them to the 'Jesuit College' sub-heading, I accidentally stumbled across https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jesuit_College_(Kutn%C3%A1_Hora) which now has 141 photos. Shouldn't the original wiki point to the category? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cpetreman (talk • contribs) 13:07, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

@Cpetreman: assuming that by “the original wiki” you mean the gallery page, you could add a category link similarly to what was done for the ossuary (which also has its own gallery) at the bottom of the page. Another conventional way to add a link would be to put {{Cat see also}} under the section heading. (Although gallery pages occupy this project’s “main” namespace, they’re rather peripheral to most navigation & curation activities, and are developed & maintained only sporadically.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:40, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello

I'm trying to update the company logo and updated the new logo onto the Wikimedia Commons image section.

I've come unstuck however as I'm not sure of the copyright/trademark specifications and am not sure how to take the old logo down.

Ideally I would replace the new logo with the old one and the old logo is superceded by the new one.

Please can you advice?

Kind regards A1exxa (talk) 04:18, 15 January 2019 (UTC)A1exxa

@A1exxa: First off, it's okay to have old versions of things here: rather than remove the old file outrite, change it from "File:Company logo.svg" to "File:Company logo (1999-2018).svg" and that way, we have both versions. Secondly, copyright and trademark are different beasts: many trademarks are not copyrighted or even copyright-able in the United States. Something like File:Seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.svg definitely has trademark protection: you cannot just slap that bad boy on any product you want to sell. But because it was created by and for a federal agency in the United States, it is in the public domain and has no copyright protection. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:36, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
@A1exxa: May I presume this is about File:RPS BM RGB.png, and that that is the new logo? As Koavf says, Commons shouldn't get rid of the old logo, wherever that may be. It's relevant for historical reasons. I see this is UK; they tend to have a lower threshold than the U.S. for what is copyrightable, so perhaps that is copyrightable in the UK (it wouldn't be in the U.S.). Presuming it is trademarked, you will want to add {{Trademarked}}. If that is copyrightable in the UK, then this will get tricky unless you are a representative of the company. (Are you?) If it is copyrightable in the UK, then we need an explicit "free license" to host it on Commons. This in no way releases trademark rights, but it does license reuse that does not infringe trademark. (I know this is tricky. Intellectual property law is tricky, and that's independent of any decisions we make here.) I would recommend something like {{cc-by-sa 4.0|author= RPS Group}} as the one that holds onto as many rights as they are allowed to hold and still be compatible with Commons' rules.
Once that's sorted out, you reference it in an article on Wikipedia exactly the same way you reference any other image file. In particular, if there is an existing Wikipedia article, you can just replace this filename in the article. Remember to refresh your browser cache after doing so, otherwise you are liable to still see the old version. - Jmabel ! talk 04:55, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
If the company is free-licensing this (as I just described), unless they intend to indicate the license on their own website, it would be a good idea also to go through the rights release process described at COM:OTRS so that there is no question that the company is releasing those rights, not just some individual who is not authorized to speak for the company. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

What does his tie say?

If you zoom in on Farage's tie, you can see that it has a legible text on it. Unfortunately, I don't understand it at all. Could someone translate it for us and then add a note on the picture? Mr. Farage didn't wear that specific tie at that specific moment (during a speech in the European Parliament) by chance. Thank you! --Edelseider (talk) 08:55, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

Caption feature

I had the same question :) So, I merge it to this section.

I see that new feature appeared at the page of every image at Wikimedia Commons. I mean "Captions".

Should I copy the caption from the template "Information"? Or this new caption should be more similar to Labels at Wikidata, that is

  1. Captions has to start from small letter.
  2. The whole description should be one sentence length.
  3. The sentence should be without full stop.

Am I right? Please, give me a link to the documentation of this new feature. --Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk)

Dear help desk people, I just discovered the new "caption" feature and found it rather difficult to understand. I read the respective help page, which did not really help me. Apparently a caption is supposed to contain "structured data", whatever that is supposed to mean. I still do not understand, how a caption should differ from the ordinary description. I usually upload images of organisms, such as File:Saponaria ocymoides 2 RF.jpg. In this case I just entered one of the popular names of the plant as a caption for each language, with "Latin" for the scientific name. But I am really not sure whether this is what is intended or whether I am supposed to enter the contents of the entire description as a caption, possibly without the parentheses, italics and commas. As long as I cannot understand this feature (and so far I certainly do not understand it), I shall ignore it and not use it any more. With best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 22:11, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

  • @Robert Flogaus-Faust: Sounds like you used this exactly right. The idea is, roughly, to give a very short description, and to make that available in as many languages as possible. And, yes, it does seem to have been rolled out prematurely, with quite insufficient user acceptance testing. - Jmabel ! talk 22:35, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

No contact with parent category

In available category:"Category:Images of user: Vitold Muratov -People" I created a blue subcategory:"Category:Images of user: Vitold Muratov - Undressed People". And uploaded her with files. From any file I get from the bottom in this subcategory. But the parent category on top of this subcategory does not see it at all. What to do? Vitold Muratov (talk) 18:57, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

@Vitold Muratov: the category page Category:Images of user:Vitold Muratov - Undressed Peoples doesn't have any categories, just the text "Images of user:People". You need to add [[Category:Images of user:Vitold Muratov - Peoples]] to the category page. clpo13(talk) 18:20, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
Also, I doubt you want "peoples" here. Most commonly, "people" is the English plural of "person". There is a singular noun "people" which is pluralized as "peoples", but it would mean something like the French, or the Americans, or the Russians (each of which is "a people", and collectively they are "peoples"). - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Mass deletion nomination of Canadian signs

Have no opinion on the merits of the mass deletion requests.... but there is an editor nominating a certain type of image for delet ion on mass. I'm concerned that we're being overwhelmed here... with hundreds of articles affected on English Wikipedia. Is it normal to nominate every image in categories? Needless to say it's overwhelming and very hard to respond to hundred of these. Is this disruptive or not....looks a bit fishy?--Moxy (talk) 01:13, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

    • Thanks for this but I waited a long time on each article, closing and opening again several times and clicking anything I could click. Now, encouraged to repeat the performance, I tried again but in both articles as I clicked the x to close the pop-up a picture flashed for an instant and when I reopened the pop-up it played! It is two articles, en:Steam locomotive and en:Rimutaka Incline. Now I've tried again and get the flashed image when it first opens. Still have to close and reopen to get it to run. I use a Mac and Mojave if that makes any difference. Thanks for your interest, at least it can be forced to run. Best wishes, Eddaido (talk) 06:19, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

How can I find a recently uploaded image

I received a CCːfrom Senior Deputy County Attorney,Chesterfield County, that 2 hours ago he sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, the pemission to use a drawing of Dutch Gap Conservation Center, but I could not find it. Also not sure how to search the image library. Is there a way to search images by name?Help pleaseOldperson (talk) 15:55, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

@Oldperson: he may not have uploaded it here. It is (afaik) possible to send your images (or a link to them) to permissions-commons and they can upload it for you. I searched for Dutch Gap Conservation and found nothing this month. Either it was uploaded without any description or it wasn't uploaded. If he did upload it, he likely included his username or the file name in the mail. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:17, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

Does that help. I can forward the permission slip. Anyway I still don’t know how to search for images. ːː@Alexis Jazz: Could you help me out here please. I uploaded this file today

Farrar's Island as it appears today

I have permission from Chesterfield County's Deputy Attorney . I included in my sourse the OTRS clause and the entire permissions inluding it's address to permissions.. They sent the email with me as a cc but they named the image as image001.jpg. I renamed it before uploading to Farrar's Island Dutch Gap Conservation Center. It is difficult, in fact mind boggling, trying to navigate the upload system. Instructions say if the permission is emailed then put OTRS template in the Source.

However I can't expect someone who is not an editor to try and learn the Uploader and go through the trouble of filling in the blanks. The system is definitely not user friendly. Will this image wind up being nominated for deletion, even though I included the persmissions and the owner of the copyright send a permissions email.?Oldperson (talk) 20:03, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

@Oldperson: sounds like you have a problem with your keyboard settings, not a Commons problem. Do other websites have the same problem?
About permission, usually OTRS handles this and would have uploaded the file. I've asked them now because you uploaded it before they could. You can search for images using Special:Search. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:49, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: This problem with brackets and tildes exists only on the commons. I don't have that problem in Word nor on WP, just commons. Thanks I found the image by searching. The commons is a complete puzzle to me. Trying to navigate the pages is beyond my ken. I have no idea what or where OTRS is.it is there I just hope that it stays and is not a candidate for deletion. ThanksOldperson (talk) 21:12, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
@Oldperson: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org is the email address for OTRS. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:14, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

{ping|GreenMeansGo}} How can I get a ticket when it was the Deputy County Attorney that sent in the permission. Here is the scenario. I asked chesterfield.gov (Virginia)to send in a permissions , as per instructions on the commons. to CC: me, they attached the image but as image001.jpg, not as Dutch Gap Conservation era. They had previously mailed me the image and I renamed it. The image was not uploaded to commons by OTRS staff. And if they had done so I could not have found it because of the name of the image (image001.jpg). Back to the beginning. Since it was chesterfield.gov who emailed the permissions, how would I get a ticket?
I uploaded the image with the proper name and in source I included the permissions from Chesterfield . which includes the name and phone number of the county attorney. I don't know what else to do, meanwhile the issue of obtaining permission from a third party, having them email the permissions to wikipedia commons and having OTRS staff know to notify me with a ticket number is highly convoluted and almost impossible to manage. If I am not clear. A third party (copyright owner) emails permission to WP, how then am I given a ticket numberOldperson (talk) 00:58, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Providing evidence of permission for open-access journal articles

Hi, I'm AmericanLemming. I do a fair amount of editing on the English Wikipedia, but I have little experience with Wikimedia Commons. I recently uploaded five images related to ALS to add them to the English Wikipedia article. All of them have been marked for deletion because they lack "evidence for permission." All but one of them come from the open-access journal article "Modelling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: progress and possibilities", licensed under Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0. Would including the URL to the webpage that contains the full article (http://dmm.biologists.org/content/10/5/537) or the URL to the full PDF of the article (http://dmm.biologists.org/content/dmm/10/5/537.full.pdf) be sufficient to provide evidence for permission? The four images are "File:ALS Disease Pathology and Proposed Disease Mechanisms.jpg", "File:ALS animal models.jpg", "File:ALS animal models, photos only.jpg", and "File:ALS animal models, photos only.pdf".

The fifth image is "File:Prevalence of ALS in the United States by age group, 2012-2015.jpg" from the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report article "Prevalence of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis — United States, 2015". As a work of the US federal government, it's in the public domain. Similarly, would providing a link to the webpage URL (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/67/wr/mm6746a1.htm?s_cid=mm6746a1_w) or the URL to the full PDF of the article (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/67/wr/pdfs/mm6746a1-H.pdf) be sufficient to provide evidence for permission? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AmericanLemming (talk • contribs) 04:30, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

@AmericanLemming: with regard to the images from the review article, I would indeed add a link to the article's web page. The PDF version does not mention the CC-BY-3.0 license and is quite a big file, so I would avoid linking there. The problem with the government image is unrelated to copyright; you can object to its deletion in this DR (or FfD in Wikipedia language). --HyperGaruda (talk) 19:57, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

I can't figure out how to do it! Whoever reads this. Can I just send a link to the photo. My link wasn't acceptable to the commons upload. I even added the link to this help message and it was rejected.

The problem that I see is that we can't upload a page of newspaper here, all images here are free.
Check out our first steps Commons:First steps to see how to contribute here.
There is the possibility to upload a low resolution image of a file under copyright at English Wikipedia, however you must contact the Wikipedia community to see how and if your idea is allowed there.

Copyright help regarding File:Parsa Pirouzfar2.jpg

The picture Parsa Pirouzfar2.JPG which is recently uploaded by me (Sc Wikinevis user) here in Wikipedia is an open source and everyone are allowed to use it.

This picture of Parsa Pirouzfar (Iranian Actor, Theater Director and Painter) was taken by an Iranian photographer Saghi Baligh and it belongs to her.

There are different version of this picture and also other pictures of other Actors and Actresses taken by this Iranian photographer (SAGHI BALIGH) in different social networks and all over the Internet, especially in Iranian websites. The google link you sent me and you believe is a copyright violation is actually an Iranian Website who used the picture of Ms. Saghi Bbaligh. Because THERE IS NO LICENSE TAGS FOR HER PICTURES | SAGHI BALIGH'S IMAGES ARE 'OPEN SOURCE' AND FREE TO BE USED, SHARED AND MODIFIED.

The photographer published this work and other of her pictures in her public Instagram page for people to use and share and she doesn't have any problem if someone use it in their social platforms, communities and websites.

If you believe you need more information you can contact the photographer herself by Public Instagram page, where she uploaded this picture and uploads all of her work.

The photographer doesn't have problem with her pictures being uploaded in wikipedia or in any other platforms.

archive.org license

I found a map in the first page of a book saved in archive.org.

https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_KRUbCt56M8sC/page/n5

Question: has the book or the map a license compatible with commons?

--Juan Villalobos (talk) 22:15, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

@Juan Villalobos: I don’t think so; I don’t see anything like a licence on the webpage, and the book itself has a notice saying it’s ©1965 by the Regents of the U. of California. According to COM:HIRTLE it won’t be free until 2061. However, it should be possible to ‘paraphrase’ the information in the illustration using a free base map.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:31, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Hello Juan Villalobos,
This questions around copyright will be better addressed here: Village pump/Copyright
I couldn't find license description at this page, and 1965 is not that old... My suggestion is to open a thread there. And see in the bibliography of the book if the map was removed from another source, this could give a light in this case.

How to close a media file deletion request

Whilst many deletion requests are correct some are most certainly not in such a case how does one close a deletion request? Though I am partiularly concerned about requests for File:Universal Declaration of Human Rights Zhuang Sawndip.png and File:Universal Declaration of Human Rights Zhuang Sawndip Traditional variant.jpg, the problem of deletion requests being left open is not uncommon. Johnkn63 (talk) 03:14, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

@Johnkn63: considering you have commented in both deletion requests, you really should not single-handedly close them. That would be a biased verdict. Just let it run its course; an uninvolved editor/admin will close the DR at some point. It might take a while though, looking at the DR backlog. --HyperGaruda (talk) 08:46, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick reply. Happy to wait, just worried that looking at the backlog unclear as to when this might happen. As you say after making a comment it should be someone else who closes the request. As the file page itself only displays the initial request, but not the responses to that request, this cpuld confuse people, in this case because the requests suggest the file contains errors, but in fact the files do not. Is there a tag to ask others to look at the requests?Johnkn63 (talk) 12:56, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
@Johnkn63: As COM:DR says, Non-admins may close a deletion request as keep if they have a good understanding of the process, and provided the closure is not controversial. That you're asking how to close a DR suggests that's you don't have the requisite understanding. Also, these requests are controversial, in that Wargaz hasn't given any indication of being satisfied with your changes, so they should be left for an admin to close. I think if the closure were genuinely uncontroversial, it wouldn't be a problem that you'd already commented. --bjh21 (talk) 11:31, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
@Bjh21: COM:DR also says 'In general, requests can be closed by an administrator after seven days.' It is well over seven days. This has no happened. I posted a reply the same day as the request on Wargaz's talk page, he has not replied despite having made other contributions in the mean time, to which my educated guess is that he agrees. The fact that an admin can close a DR after 7 days (if they are clear on which way it should go) by no means indicates that 7 days is always sufficient. We definitely want to leave a DR open if no uninvolved admin thinks the decision is clear. - Jmabel ! talk 21:12, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

After uploading an image the colours are changed

Dear helpdesk

I have uploaded an image file:IND monologen liggend 300dpi CMYK (c) Making Waves.jpg

File:IND monologen liggend 300dpi CMYK (c) Making Waves.jpg

When it is displayed in the page on the Dutch wiki “De Indië Monologen” the colours have become different from the original image on my Mac computer.

  • Green has become more intense, neon-like.
  • Blue seems to be covered with a grey layer.

What can I do to obtain the original quality in the uploaded image?

Bathgate Block, Winnigeg

It says Public Domain, but the photo said some rights reserved when I downloaded it. Is it OK for the Commons? Drenowe (talk) 16:41, 21 January 2019 (UTC)drenowe

Drenowe: Are you talking about File:Winnipeg Bathgate Block, 1882-1883.jpg? It seems likely that the Flickr user intended to waive their copyright and place their work in the public domain. If that was their intent, they should have used the Creative Commons CC0 public domain dedication. Unfortunately, they marked it with Public Domain Mark 1.0 instead. The Public Domain Mark is just a general statement that the content is believed to be in the public domain. It is intended for things like third-party works where the copyright has expired. It contains no language that would waive any copyright that actually exists. Therefore, it is not sufficient for Commons. Since it's probably the Flickr user's intent to release the photo, you can hopefully get them to change the copyright information on Flickr if you contact them.
In the future, please use Flickr2Commons when uploading from Flickr. It will refuse to upload files with incompatible copyright terms, it will ensure that you upload full resolution versions instead of miniatures, and it will tag the files for licensing review to avoid deletion in case the uploader changes the licensing on Flickr later. User afraid to Search lest he lose his current page

  1. User is editing a page.
  2. User needs to search for another page.
  3. User dares not use the search box (placeholder="Search Wikimedia Commons") at upper right, lest his current page become part of his browser's history, needing clicking BACK to hopefully get back to it intact.
  4. Therefore user painfully middle clicks Special Pages in the left panel, and then clicks Search from the list of special pages.

@Jidanni and Donald Trung: even quicker, use the search box on the current page but command-click (control-click on Windows?) to open the results in a new tab or window. Works in Safari at least.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:53, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
If there's a method that works on Firefox/Linux, I have yet to find it. Ideally, middle-clicking the search icon would open a new tab. --ghouston (talk) 02:21, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
I have a better work-around than "painfully middle clicks Special Pages in the left panel, and then clicks Search from the list of special pages." I middle-click my user name (or any other handy link if scrolled down a page) and use the search box in that new tab. When editing, you can middle-click the CC license link at the bottom. --ghouston (talk) 02:28, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Usually when browsing away from an in-progress wikitext, a pop-up asks whether you really want to leave the page, making an additional click necessary anyway. I don't see what is so much more painful about middle-clicking a random link first and then search over there. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:26, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
You wouldn't be leaving the page, you'd be opening a new search in a new tab. --ghouston (talk) 08:39, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Alright, this functionality can be enabled with MediaWiki:Gadget-search-new-tab.js. Activate it in the preferences, Gadgets -> Interface: Other -> Search results in new tab, save the preferences, clear the cache at MediaWiki:Gadget-search-new-tab.js, and now control-click or control-Enter in the search box puts the results into a new tab. --ghouston (talk) 09:10, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks everybody, but the site should be redesigned so that the user does not need to go through all such troubles. I'm sure top news, social sites don't do it this way. Yes I know this is not a social site. Maybe I should file a MediaWiki bug? Jidanni (talk) 05:40, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
Actually, Facebook is much worse than the Wikimedia sites in this respect. - Jmabel ! talk 06:43, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
The search icon is actually an HTML form button. Firefox doesn't support submitting forms to a new tab. It's a 20-year-old request, but apparently the developers don't want it, for reasons that that can probably be found somewhere in [7]. It wouldn't bother me if the behaviour of that gadget above was the default though. --ghouston (talk) 07:29, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

@Amitchell125: You can't embed an external image here; you will have to download the image and then upload it. I see that the site has taken steps to make that difficult, but I'm sure we can figure out how to get it. Also, we would normally require the copyright holder to send an e-mail via COM:OTRS to confirm that they granted permission for the image's use. However, in this case it is doubtful that the London Picture Archive has any claim whatsoever to the copyright on this image. Instead, you'll need to determine who the original author of the image was and what year it was published in to determine if its copyright status is allowable (see COM:L). • If the picture comes from a site under your control, the simplest thing to do is to indicate the offered free license on that site, then indicate that in the "permissions" portion of {{Information}}.
  • The less easy thing to do, but also effective, is to go through the process described at COM:OTRS. Unfortunately, they have quite a backlog, so it may take as long as two months until a request passed in that way is ultimately resolved. - Jmabel ! talk 20:41, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

I personally couldn't find much discussion about this in the Wikimedia introduction page, so I'd figure I'd ask and get this cleared up - what are the rules on uploading images of historical and political figures? I've noticed that a lot of pages of historical politicians have no photo on Wikipedia, so I personally would like to upload images providing visuals for readers, but public domain law on images and photography is pretty vague. Can you guys help me out here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewh4567 (talk • contribs) 2019-01-25 03:22 (UTC)

  • If you want to get heavily involved in uploading historical photos, you really do need to get a decent sense of copyright law. Otherwise, others will have to put a lot of work into sorting out whether your uploaded images are OK. The laws are not exactly vague but they are complicated, especially if you are dealing with a variety of countries.
  • Anything over 120 years old is basically safe ({{PD-old-assumed}}) as is anything from the U.S. published before January 1, 1924 ({{PD-US-expired}}). And of course copyrighted material that has a license compatible with Commons is also fine.
  • Is there some particular country you are focused on? We can probably give you some decent guidance if there is; otherwise, you really are dealing with hundreds of different national laws. - Jmabel ! talk 05:44, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
  • I was primarily focused on American politicians during the 20th Century, after coming up on more than a few pages of politicians that were stubs with basically nothing in them. I'll try to get a good sense of where the law stands this; appreciate the help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewh4567 (talk • contribs) 13:34, 26 January 2019‎ (UTC)
  • @Andrewh4567: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:44, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Search options

I want to search photos for a special subject which are public domain. There is no additional search parameter "license" or it's so well hidden that I cannot find it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.185.81.148 (talk • contribs) 2019-01-26 11:11 (UTC)

  • Please sign your posts here by ending them with ~~~~, which will automatically be converted to a signature and timestamp.
  • Just add "public domain" (with the quotes) to your search terms. Should work fine. - Jmabel ! talk 17:39, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

My photo is being used, uncredited, by a page on Wikipedia. How do I get credit for my photo?

My photo from 1988 popped up on a Wikipedia site severely cropped, but it is still my photo. How do I get credit for my photo? I know details about the photo and what is left out of the crop. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shannon30033 (talk • contribs)

@Shannon30033: , the file you are complaining about is en:File:Zantigo_logo_1980s.jpg? If you are willing to release the original file with a free license, then uploading it here at Commons may be an option. Then the version on the English Wikipedia could be replaced. It would probably be best to go through OTRS so that authorship can be demonstrated. --ghouston (talk) 06:56, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Coordinates wrong on a category side-panel

The side-panel appearing on here has the wrong coordinates. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gillespie_Park Right part of the world. Just the wrong side of the railway tracks. You can see the correct coordinates on the wikipedia article, but also by clicking the edit icon on that panel. So that's odd. I don't understand where that panel comes from, so I don't know if this is wrong data hiding somewhere else, or... for all I know, it could be that all such side panels are a bit off due to a bug.

Hello,

I'm creating a page about my Grandfather Kando Kandov and another one about his brother Tze Kando and those pages are edited without my permission and the photos from my personal archive are marked as a possible copyright violation. Would you please check and solve. If there is something I should do, let me know. Thank you!

How to bring my User page to the attention of the members of a particular subcategory

I am new at Wikimedia. I created a User Page (Prisoner at Chalons). Although I added a category (Furriers in Leipzig) I have no idea if this means that all members of that sub-category are able to see or be aware of my page. How do I make sure that people interested in furriers in Leipzig actually get to see my page? Also, right after I made my edits I checked to see if it got recorded on the "Recent changes" page from the Furriers category page. I see hundreds of very recent changes, but I cannot see my own. Use of GPL Font with Exception

I wish to upload an image creating using a font (Kinnari) released under GPL Version 2 with an exception.

I believe the image is a derivative work of the font, in that it is subject to the copyright of the font. I am not sure that I have acquired any copyright in the image that I have created.

The font licence reads:

This font is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.
This font is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the GNU General Public License for more details.
You should have received a copy of the GNU General Public License along with this font; if not, write to the Free Software Foundation, Inc., 51 Franklin St, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA 02110-1301 USA
As a special exception, if you create a document which uses this font, and embed this font or unaltered portions of this font into the document, this font does not by itself cause the resulting document to be covered by the GNU General Public License. This exception does not however invalidate any other reasons why the document might be covered by the GNU General Public License. If you modify this font, you may extend this exception to your version of the font, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version.

My understanding is that even though the image contains the design of the glyph, which I believe to be subject to the original copyright in the UK, where I created the image, the special exception renounces the font's copyright holder's copyright in the image I have created.

How do I word the licensing section for the image?

I am also using a glyph from a font released under the SIL OFL for the image, so the licensing section will also invoke {{OFL}}. I have three such images to release, though for one of them I know I can create an equivalent glyph free of any copyright or copyleft issues. --RichardW57 (talk) 02:07, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

The GPL 2 licence is still valid for your derivative work, so you can upload your image here under a general free licence of your own plus the GPL2 for the font. As I understand it, the disclaimer only states that using such a font would not automatically release an entire document (i.e. full text) under the same GPL licence.
I suggest you use the following code to fill in the file information:
  • source: *{{own using | [name and link of GPL Kinnari font]}}
*{{own using | [name and link of OFL font]}}
  • author: *This image: {{user|RichardW57}}
*<Kinnari font name>: add developer(s) or required attribution
*<OFL font name>: add developer(s) or required attribution
  • license: {{<free licence of your choice>}}{{GPLv2+}}{{OFL}}

How do I "provide a link to the license"?

Some photos say that for proper attribution: “You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.” What is meant by “provide a link to the license”? Where do I find the license for any given photo? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raisin25 (talk • contribs) 14:58, 30 January 2019‎ (UTC)

The name of the individual licence should be stated at each image here at Commons, and the templated licence text should also contain a link to the original licence pages. E.g. the Creative Commons by Attribution 4.0 licence page can be found here, so if you use an image under this licence outside of Wikimedia projects, you need to provide a weblink to that licence page. See the examples below where there is a link to the "Attribution 4.0 International" summary and to a copy of the GFDL licence text. De728631 (talk) 16:09, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Image copyright and the Contourites page

Hello,

I am reading the contourites page, and I notice that the bedform phase diagram image is both very interesting and too small to be useful. The DOI link takes you right to the source paper and a much larger image of the figure. I hold no rights to the image, but if the smaller version is cool to put on the page, why can't I post a larger, higher resolution image of the figure from the linked webpage?

Thank you for the clarification — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anselmus7 (talk • contribs) 20:44, 30 January 2019‎ (UTC)

I think you are referring to this image: en:File:Contourite_bedform_diagram_Stow2009.png. It has not been published under a free license. Such a license is required, however, for an image to be uploaded here. This image was uploaded to the English language Wikipedia which allows unfree images under fair use conditions. One of these conditions is the small resolution. See COM:FAIRUSE and en:WP:FAIRUSE for more information. --rimshottalk 21:04, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
