Have file deleted please

Hi,

I just uploaded a file here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:G7_2018_Charlevoix_family_photo.jpg from the ongoing G7 summit in Quebec. It was released originally here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/gac-amc/41960806314/in/album-72157696042778941/ from a Government of Canada Flickr account. As seen at the link above, it is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0. I thought that that was acceptable here but then found out that it's not. Could somebody please delete the image for me? Or, alternatively, tell me why it is okay to have here.

Thanks. R64Q (talk) 21:55, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

@R64Q: It is not OK and deletion has already been asked using {{Copyvio}}. --Lacrymocéphale (talk) 21:58, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Former buildings shouldn't include demolished buildings?

Someone reminded me that former buildings shouldn't include demolished buildings. But what puzzles me is why "Category:Former structures by country" is the parent category of "Category:Destroyed buildings by country"? --Kai3952 (talk) 10:05, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

I'd say move Category:Destroyed buildings by country from Category:Former structures by country to Category:Destroyed structures by country. --ghouston (talk) 00:58, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Creative Commons License

So I've just created this election graphic I'd like to upload, that it may be placed on a relevant Wikipedia article. I'd very much like it though if it had a Creative Commons license. Am I right in understanding that any original work uploaded on Wikimedia Commons is automatically given a Creative Commons license? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Makemakean (talk • contribs) 11:23, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Makemakean: Uploaders license their own work. Is the graphic entirely your own work?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:00, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G: I believe that it falls strictly speaking under derivative work. I have traced maps from technocco.jp (who allows their maps to be used freely for research purposes) and a map of the Japanese prefectures already uploaded on Wikimedia Commons at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/Japan_Municipality_Map.png to get the boundaries of the constituencies (which being geographical facts should, if I understand it properly, be uncopyrightable), as well as coastal outlines traced from maps provided at Wikimedia Maps Beta, and while the data used to determine the colours has been scraped from the website of the Asahi Shimbun, the returns of the election are publicly available information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Makemakean (talk • contribs) 12:07, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Makemakean: Sorry, Google's translation of https://technocco.jp/n_map/riyou.html appears to restrict commercial use, so you appear to be wrong in your understanding and you may not upload your illustration here.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:37, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G: While that certainly is a shame, I cannot help but to be both impressed and grateful that you take your mission here on Wikimedia Commons seriously enough that you actually took the time to check them up thoroughly. I shall write an email to them then, to inquire if they would be okay with such an illustration being uploaded. Not expecting a positive response, I must admit, but it's worth a shot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Makemakean (talk • contribs) 12:53, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
For what it's worth, we have an enormous collection of free-licensed outline maps here on Commons. If you want to do something like this again in the future, and you want it to end up free-licensed, it sounds like all you'd have to do differently is to start from a free-licensed map. - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

CC-BY-2.0?

I want to upload an image that's under CC-BY-2.0. The upload wizard offers CC-BY-2.5, but not 2.0. Are the similar enough that I should just select 2.5 and not worry about it? RoySmith (talk) 22:31, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

@RoySmith: No. Select "Another reason not mentioned above" and then enter {{Cc-by-2.0}} in the box. Alternatively, there's an option for CC BY 2.0 under the Flickr heading that I think works perfectly well for non-Flickr files. --bjh21 (talk) 23:04, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

File:Bruce Eastick.jpg : overwritten file

I’m not sure if it was wise, even if the Flickr license is correct, for this file to have overwritten the previous one uploaded under the same name. Does anyone know how to fix this? — Marchjuly (talk) 07:52, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

No, this was against our policy. However, it happened in 2014 and the initially uploaded image is of very bad quality. So, we might even consider deleting this version. --Túrelio (talk) 07:56, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at this Túrelio. Is a DR needed to delete to older file? Also, same thing seems to have been done at File:180503 AOA 설현 백상예술대상 (3).jpg. — Marchjuly (talk) 08:17, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

When I click on my send an email icon, a New email page Does not come up. You can simply copy the address from the address bar of your browser and paste it into an e-mail. Sites that have their own dedicated function for sharing links to their content via e-mail mainly do so in order to harvest e-mail addresses and track people for advertising purposes. Wikimedia Commons has no such interests. LX (talk, contribs) 09:58, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Huge watermark

I was looking for an illustrative image of a Tlingit totem pole that featured the former president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln but could only find this image, now I have no intent on uploading it as I can't find information on the author and the watermark is huge, however at what point do watermarks become disruptive? A huge watermark in a corner is rarely treated with adversity but a big one in the middle finds the ire of many. Personally I prefer to upload images with either no or minimal watermark visibility but as there is a treasure chest of good historical images in the public domain with watermarked images on Getty Images I just wanted to know, how big is too big? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 10:49, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

If an image can be found on a Facebook page, does that mean it's copyrighted?

  • This image can be found at a Facebook page about the village: www.kukmang.com. Does that automatically mean it is under copyright?

Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 01:51, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

    • I'm not sure I understand the thrust of your question. It's possible to put a public domain photo on a Facebook page, so being on a Facebook page doesn't mean it's copyrighted. Many, perhaps most photos on Commons are copyrighted (and free-licensed). And this photo wasn't on Facebook, to my knowledge.
    • You did link to a place where this image is used on www.kukmang.com. At most, we might require COM:OTRS from the uploader if we have reason to believe that update predates the upload to Commons, but I see no special reason to doubt that the same person uploaded it there as here. My only concern is that this is the person's sole upload, so he/she might be hard to get hold of. - Jmabel ! talk 02:41, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
    • For what it's worth, we deleted File:Yasir Hameed.jpg, from the same user, over a similar lack of clarity. However, that appears to have been a scanned paper photograph, and this is a cell phone shot. - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
He does say in his description: "Source = from My mobile phone
Previously published: www.kukmang.com |Date = 2008/02/18 |Author = [[User:G..." . So he said where he got it and it passed muster then. Kalbbes (talk) 02:52, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Just to clarify, if you take a photo with your mobile, then it's ok to use? (This is why I don't normally get involved in this subject of copy right.) Kalbbes (talk) 02:56, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@Kalbbes: Yes, if it's not COM:DW.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 02:58, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@Kalbbes: Why would a mobile phone be any different from any other camera? - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I admit I don't know the fine points here, but not too long ago some photos were questioned because they involved images of statues in the Vietnam Memorial in Washington. I believe they were removed as infringing on the artist's copyright. (I may be getting this wrong.) Kalbbes (talk) 15:35, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@Kalbbes: Certainly. In the U.S., there is no freedom of panorama for photographing copyrighted sculptures. But what would that have to do with the type of camera used? - Jmabel ! talk 00:02, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Would you, OR ANYBODY, use the linked^ picture. How, too?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ShelbyLH (talk • contribs) 07:21, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

That page answers your question in detail, please do take the time to read it. Short version: an image cannot be "fair use" in general, but only for a specific use. Some Wikipedias, for example the English one, allow fair use. You need to check their rules. Commons does not allow fair use.
If something is still unclear, feel free to ask again, we will try to clear things up. --rimshottalk 07:42, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Wikimedia Commons can not legally host any content under a "fair use" rationale, and all Wikimedia projects are prohibited by the Wikimedia Foundation from relying on fair use to host non-free content that could be replaced with a free alternative, as is the case with almost all portraits of living people. LX (talk, contribs) 08:46, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@LX: That's not really a legal matter for Commons, it's a policy decision. We'd be perfectly legal hosting an image on a fair-use basis that had a description that amounted to commentary on the photo, but we choose, by consensus, not to do that. Our intent is to host only images that can be readily reused without such considerations. But the consequences for what we host are the same as if it were a legal matter for us. - Jmabel ! talk 15:27, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
As noted in Commons:Fair use, the legal exemption does not apply to general media databases, which is what Commons is. It is true that if Commons were something that it is not, the legal exemptions might not apply, but given what it actually is, the inability to invoke fair use is a legal matter. LX (talk, contribs) 17:57, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Given the content in the descriptions, I think a pretty strong case could be made that Commons is not simply a general media database. IANAL, but I'd have zero worry about Commons (or an uploader) being sued for such a thing, but, again, the matter is moot since (1) it would be against our policy, even if it's not against the law and (2) our intent is to host only images where copyright issues shouldn't arise for any reuser, as long as they stick to the licensing terms. (Of course, trademarks and personality rights and other "moral rights" can be another matter.) - Jmabel ! talk 00:07, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Photos of celebrities

Hi,

I'm trying to find a picture of improv comedian, Jessica McKenna, for her wikipedia page. I'm not quite sure how pictures of celebrities work? How do I know if the image is free for me to use? for example, this image of her in this green tank top is used in multiple places. Thanks! Basilosauridae❯❯❯talk 18:53, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Unless stated otherwise, these pictures are usually unfree and not suitable for Commons. --Magnus (talk) 18:54, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Some photo hosting websites such as Flickr allow users to publish photos under a free license such as Creative Commons, but only certain types of CC licenses are allowed on Commons. See Commons:Flickr files for more info. Also, Google has an instruction on finding free images using Image Search, but note that Commons may only allow "free to use, share or modify, even commercially" images. --Wcam (talk) 02:31, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Hey guys,

I'm having issues with uploading the logo of a humanitarian nonprofit organisation to Wikipedia. I've prepared an article about this organisation, as they are a renown organisation taking care of demining, victim assistance, development, human rights and wider human security. As many other similar organisations are present on Wikipedia, I've decided to write about them and help send the message what they are doing.

I've prepared the article in my sandbox, with all the citations and sources. Now when I try to upload the logo of ITF, it got denied two times. I am a novice when it comes to using Wikipedia and creating articles, so right now I'm stuck. I have no idea why i can’t upload it. I've tried with "Fair use" license, but got deleted again even though I've have stated the source and the purpose of the upload. The logo is freely available on their website (https://www.itf.si/press/), where it is stated that you can use in order to inform others of advocating global human security efforts and in accordance with good business practice.

I hope, I've made my self-clear. I seek for help in order to complete the upload of the logo and also of the article. Any information is welcomed.

Hope you are having a nice day :) Krpa007 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krpa007 (talk • contribs) 12:15, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). The logo in question is probably too simple for copyright and so could be uploaded with {{PD-textlogo}} and {{trademark}}. The reason it was denied at en:WP:FFU is that there was no published article for the logo to go with (that is, not a draft), or at least not one that I could find when reviewing. clpo13(talk) 03:24, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
@Clpo13: COM:TOO does not mention Slovenia. (which means that if nobody knows the TOO for Slovenia and somebody nominates it, it's gone) Could be uploaded as PD-USonly to enwiki, m:Non-free content lists the EDP on other wikis. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 04:23, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Ghost categories and messed up metadata

File:MadoneAuxAnges RougesJeanFouquet fragment.jpg has some incorrect categories that should be removed. Hi, there is a site called forvo.com. All of their file is under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 license (which commons does not allow). • I wouldn't think so, if you've described the situation accurately. That assumes the wording on his email made it clear this was for all of his images, including future images if that's relevant (that is, if the image you want to use post-dates his permission). - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't understand what I'm expected to do. I have drawn the original picture and taken the photograph of it myself. Do I need to edit this content somehow:

Description
English: This is a drawing of a (historical) kitchen utensil called "haahla" in Finnish. It consists of two interlocked hooks and it has been used to hang a pot over an open fire hearth. The upper hook was used to hang the device to a horizontal rod or similar and the pot was hanging from the lower hook. The notches in the shaft of the upper hook make it possible to regulate the height of the pot.

Internationalization of media listings and galleries using the descriptions of each entry

It would be nice when reading content pages, eg Category:Bengali_pronunciation and Category:Quality_Images_by_Masum-al-Hasan, if each file could make use of any language descriptions that they individually have defined, perhaps by way of subtitling the entry in the list. Perhaps it is already possible. I have looked through Help:Autotranslate, Commons:Localization and Meta:Language select but the answer hasn't jumped out at me.

I realise that description texts can be rather long, so such subtitling (if this ends up as a feature request) may have to be length-limited, the whole description perhaps being made available as a tooltip. Batternut (talk) 12:25, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't think there's any mechanism for doing this: MediaWiki category pages are rather inflexible in how they show category members. This is likely to need a change to the MediaWiki software, but I don't know how one goes about suggesting MediaWiki improvements like this. I wonder if it might be able to come out of the Commons:Structured data project. --bjh21 (talk) 10:48, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

I need to upload a photo of my great-grandfather, General Juan Francisco Morales Llerena of Ecuador, S. America.

I am writing an article on my great-grandfather, General Juan Francisco Morales Llerena of Ecuador, S. America.

The photo was left to me by my mother in her Will and Testimony.

How can I get this photo in my Wikipedia article of this most distinguish person.

This photograph has never been copyrighted in Ecuador or in any country.

Thank you.

  • Physical possession of the photo has nothing to do with owning the rights to reproduce it. The issue would be who was the photographer or (if the photographer is no longer alive) who acquired or inherited the rights to that person's work. Unless the photographer died at least 70 years ago we need permission from that rights holder.
  • I'm not a lawyer, but as I understand it, Ecuador is a longtime signatory of the Berne Convention, and under Ecuadoran law a photograph is inherently copyrighted by the photographer. There is no requirement to "copyright it" as some active action by the photographer.
  • So as a first step, you need to work out who was the photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 23:12, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

I got a permission from a photographer - is it enough?

I got a permission from a photographer to release one of his photos for free use so that I can upload it to Wikimedia Commons. Do I need to show a proof for his agreement? (I talked to him through chat in his official facebook page). Thanks, Orielno (talk) 07:13, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

@Orielno: If the conversation was public and you can unambiguously post directions on finding it in the "permission" field, please do so with {{Licensereview}}. If not, please ask the photographer to send the permission via OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:02, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Why is it OK to have a picture of a nude woman on the home page?

I can see that 16 people thought that photo of a "nude recumbent woman" was fine to be a picture of the day, but, what if, five years after that was determined, it's not OK? Glammmur (talk) 10:15, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

A sharper question is why nude women have been POTD several times, but a nude man never has and probably never will. -- (talk) 10:35, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
Not a sharp question at all, but the third time this dumb and accusatory question has been asked, suggesting bias at FP or POTD. The facts. There are 11,265 featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons. Of these, 490 images are classified as "people", about 100 images of people classified as "historical" and another 100 of people classified as "sports". So around 700 photos of people, which is around 6.2% of all pictures that could appear on the main page. Of these, only four are of nudes: A non-sexual image of a Himba woman from Namibia, a partial glamour nude of Michele Merkin, a b&w upper-body and a recumbent nude. Leaving aside the Himba photo, we only have three sexual female nude photos at FP. The vast majority of photographs in the world are of people, yet on commons FP they are outnumbered 15:1. The vast majority of sexual photography in the world is of women. Based on our sample size of three nudes, oh, dear, we actually can't tell anything statistically significant about that at all. Perhaps the person who is by far the largest uploader of images to Commons, 4,061,352 images, according to his user page, can explain why they have so far failed to upload a single feature-quality photo of a nude man. -- Colin (talk) 11:44, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
To me this is a bit of a red herring. My initial question was attempting to suggest that for, say, a 12 year old girl coming to try to use Commons for the first time might be a bit alienated by the image of a naked woman on the homepage, no matter how artful. I mean, if a photography teacher at a high school busted out that photograph as a reference for great lighting or shadows or whatever, they'd probably be fired. Glammmur (talk) 12:16, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
I also fail to see how this pornography has "potential educational use": https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nudity. Since when has full-frontal nudity been used in a educational context? Glammmur (talk) 10:47, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
The issue is that you mix up Pornography with Nude art. And yes, nudity can have education value: en:Human#Biology. Regards, Yann (talk) 11:07, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
The most obvious answer is educational media about art and photography. If you wander round an art gallery, you will see plenty educationally notable images of the nude female form. Plenty educational books on art and photography contain such image. -- Colin (talk) 11:44, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
Sure, perhaps it's not useful to raise the issue of the full-frontal pornographic nudity available on the Commons is this particular thread. But, this fallback of "art vs pornography" is entirely subjective and really insensitive to cultural difference. Perhaps I'll see if I can find where there's a debate or discussion about this elsewhere on the site. Starting with the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Sexual_content page. Glammmur (talk) 13:05, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
Glammmur, there has been discussion of this before. Wrt the media repository, there's a very strong consensus that Commons should host such images. However, it is quite a separate discussion about what editorial decisions we make concerning which images to show on the front page. Personally, I think there should be some sensitivity that the main page of Commons may be viewed by people who would be uncomfortable viewing this sort of image, either for their own personal reasons, or because it was unexpected and the time or location could cause potential embarrassment. People come to Commons for all sorts of reasons, and the images we show on the main page are not requested by any viewer. But this is the Internet, where the opinions of Western young men dominate, so good luck getting any sort of grown-up discussion about that. For what it is worth, all four of our female nude FPs have been shown on the main page now, and the process of picking such a picture for the main page has been running for over a decade. So this is a rare event, fewer than one every two years on average, and there's no similar image currently in the pipeline. -- Colin (talk) 12:55, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
It's really insensitive to cultural difference to claim that full-frontal (self-identified) "pornographic" nudity is never used for education purposes. I'd argue that complete issues of Playboy would be essential for any deep study of US culture in the 20th century, and many of its competitors to compare and contrast to.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:00, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
I'm assuming this is a joke of some kind? Glammmur (talk) 09:53, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Categorizing Uncategorized Images on Wikimedia Commons

Hello Wikimedia Commons Community,

I'm a member (board) of Wikimedians of Cameroon User Group. Personally, I've seen that there is a problem (huge one) around uncategorized images on Wikimedia Commons. We think it could be a good project to start in our community and keep working on it as time evolves. We don't intend to solve the problem 100% as it's an NP-hard problem because as time evolves, the problem keeps adding as controlling how pictures are being categorized is hard.

There are 2 main ways of attempting to solve this problem;

  1. Manual way of having users via various edit-a-thons to manually do the edits in categorizing the images.
  2. Building bots / machine learning (ML) algorithms to help us do the work even if it's not very efficient, but the algorithms will learn over time.

With this regards, there are many routes to take in tackling the problem from various angles. Here is a ticket on Phabricator as we intend to work on this as a long term project: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T196917. If there is any help or guidelines the WM Commons community can offer to us, please help so we can start solving the NP-hard problem. Thanks

--Alangi Derick (talk) 16:22, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Alangi Derick: Uncategorised files are indeed a problem, but don't forget about the issue of files in need of more specific categories, and in this area, local knowledge will beat any machine learning algorithm every day of the week and twice on Sunday. There are currently over 400 files sitting in Category:Cameroon that should probably be in more specific categories instead. The same could be said of the over 90 files in Category:Buildings in Cameroon. In a country which relatively few Wikimedia users have visited, local knowledge will be invaluable in categorising and geotagging those files. LX (talk, contribs) 21:33, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
LX, exactly! I agree with you, and in fact, starting country base images categorization was already something I was thinking about. This could be a starting point for anyone who wants to help out here in Cameroon so they better understand the requirements of the project before diving deeper into other images out there. So yes, that's the next step. Thanks for the tip and of course, the issue needs to be looked at. --Alangi Derick (talk) 22:25, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Digital restorations and editing

Good evening, I would like to know if digitally restored images with better brightness, contrast, red reflections... can be uploaded and replace an existing image. As you can see here, I have been relatively perplexed by what I have read there about file overwriting and file restoration. Can I overwrite a file with a restored version? --Les Yeux Noirs (talk) 21:09, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

@Les Yeux Noirs: The restriction on "digital restoration" in Commons:Overwriting files is only stated to apply to "a historical document or artwork". My feeling is that this picture doesn't fall into that category, so making minor improvements to it is fine. Certainly, people seem happy to make more significant changes to other Geograph images. --bjh21 (talk) 21:30, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
In general with Geograph images, that shouldn't be a problem (especially one like this which certainly needs improvement). But if something comes originally from a Commons user, unless that person has actively welcomed the overwrite, you should almost always upload to a different filename. - Jmabel ! talk 21:37, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Bad links to other wikis for an image?

Just came across an illustration of the seven bridges of Königsberg problem [1]. Under "File usage on other wikis" there are many links to ar.wikipedia.org, but only one of them really has a link that uses this file. Some bot must have messed up somewhere, but where? --WiseWoman (talk) 21:46, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

I just checked three random pages and I can see the image in all of them. I can't read Arabic, but it looks like it's being used for links to ar:بوابة:خوارزميات. --bjh21 (talk) 22:07, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
Most of these seem to be transclusions of ar:Template:شريط بوابات, in which the image appears when using "خوارزميات" as a parameter. LX (talk, contribs) 22:18, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

I uploaded a file to Commons only to learn afterwards that a different image with the same name already exists in Wikipedia

I uploaded to Commons a cleaned-up JPG file called File:Louis Adolphe Billy.jpg derived from this PNG: File:Louis Adolphe Billy.png, only to discover afterwards that a low-res different image with that same JPG name, and with no usages, already exists in the English Wikipedia. (I converted the PNG to JPG because there seems to be a quality problem (at least, sometimes) with thumbnail displays of PNGs.)

Anyhow, I went to the infobox of the WP article that uses the original PNG and changed the image extension to JPG, but that just causes the crappy, low-res WP JPG to display in the infobox. I've tried fiddling with the "link" parameter to force the infobox to use my Commons JPG, but the link parameter doesn't seem to work inside infoboxes.

I don't have rights to change file names, and am not sure that's the best solution anyway. How can I get the WP article to display my Commons JPG? Thanks. -- WikiPedant (talk) 07:13, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

(PS -- The original PNG was also used on the French Wikipedia, and it worked when I changed the French infobox to use my cleaned-up Commons JPG version.)

One of the files has to be renamed. If you want the Commons file to be renamed, use {{Rename}}. Additionally, if the file in the English Wikipedia is suitable for Commons, it should be moved (copied) here. --Magnus (talk) 07:19, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

POTY Voting requirements

I have been using wikipedia for a long time now, and was editing without an account during that time. Now, I made a new account last year, and started editing on that. I enjoy photography so I was going to vote for the picture of the year. But I only have 50 or so edits, so I can't vote. I don't understand why you need to have so many edits to be able to vote, this makes the voting population pretty small. Since the point of the edit quota is presumably to prevent vandalism or vote spamming, maybe this requirement should be decreased to 20-30. That is my suggestion. Please reply to this on my talk page. Thanks! shibe

The criterion was designed to limit POTY participants to more or less regular Commons contributors. Ruslik (talk) 20:13, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Color fix request on a flag by a user

Hi. A user requested to fix the colors of this flag, but used {{Rename}} tag. I reverted the edit (invalid criterion. note: corretta means "correct"), but I haven't found a tag template for this kind of requests: I tried {{Fix}}, but it seems it doesn't work. Does anybody know what's the right template for this requests?

Anyway, translating from Italian, I understood (more or less) user's request: the flag should be 1/3 red, as it is, and 2/3 silver (and it is white). Thanks for attention: as filemover, I wouldn't simply revert a valid request using wrong template, but offer assistance/solution whenever possible (btw, I really dunno what are the correct colors of this flag). Reverting the map Natively Vietnamese-speaking areas.png

I cannot revert the upload version of this map Natively Vietnamese-speaking areas.png [2] by User Satoshi Kondo. This map is obviously incorrect because there is zero Vietnamese speaker in Hainan island and Guangdong, and very few in Houaphanh Province, Laos. @Bjh21: Thanks for your quick response. After reverting this map, I did not see it returned back to its expected version, that is the version created by User Nguyen1310 uploaded at 22:48, 9 February 2015. Moreover, there was a user named FogueraC reverted my edit. Bookworm8899 (talk) 11:29, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bookworm8899: Aha! I've worked out what happened. In Mediawiki, the contents of the file and the page describing the file are versioned separately. You reverted the description, but you wanted to revert the file itself. To revert the file, scroll to the bottom of the file page and you'll find a section labelled "File history". That shows the history of the file (and not of the description). If you click "revert" in the left column by the version you want to revert to, that will revert the contents of the file to that version (and leave the description alone). Is that clear? --bjh21 (talk) 11:34, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Assuming, though, that they are presumably unpublished pictures with unknown photographers, I suggest that you ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is more likely to be someone with the expertise to answer. (If they are from the U.S. and were published near the date they were taken, this is easy: {{PD-US}}. And if they are from the U.S. and were taken by federal government employees, then it is also easy: {{PD-USGov}}. But other cases will differ. Unpublished photos by unknown photographers can raise tricky issues.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

new article

Hello - I wish to do an article on a rock which does not show on search engines. I find your site extremely intimidating. It is so complex as to be unusable. Please send simple instructions on how to write & publish an article.

  • Probably part of why you are finding Commons intimidating for this purpose is that we don't have any "articles" on this site. Perhaps you are looking for the English-language Wikipedia? In that case, try en:Wikipedia:Your first article. (Commons and Wikipedia are umbrella'd by the same foundation, and use the same technology, but Commons is a media repository, not a host for articles.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Category-page refresh-bug?

Hi, I can open this file which i uploaded in a batch of 40 today. But clicking the category it is in, I don't see my new batch apear in the category. I deleted the whole site from my cache, and checked the cat page in another browser to no result. Is this a known serverside bug? Or what could I try, to solve it on my end? Peli (talk) 19:43, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

That's very curious. I made a null edit of the file page (go to edit page and publish without changing anything) and the problem has gone away. This kind of problem is common when templates are involved, but I've never noticed it happening with a directly-applied category. I suspect it's a similar problem though. The record of category members is being updated slowly or not at all, and the null edit provides an opportunity for the update to occur. --bjh21 (talk) 20:01, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

OTRS e-mail templates

Hello 👋🏻 everyone I have a question,

I've heard from Bob Reis of the website Anything Anywhere that when I asked him to give me permission to use his images on Wikimedia Commons and extend his rights to be commercially used and edited by others through the standard Commons:Email templates that he had to upload all of the images I requested, he told me that he took two hours and that categorisation was required, I haven't used the e-mail templates thing myself but are people required to upload all of their images to this wizard in order to give OTRS permission? If so then this would explain why I've received a lot less positive feedback since proposing it. Or maybe I'm simply not advising it properly enough to my correspondents, any advice regarding that? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 16:45, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

  • If the content is already online somewhere, and if the intent is for someone else (you, in this case) to upload, and they want to use that form, all they need to do to identify the scope is to provide URLs.
  • If the material is not already on line, obviously it is a little trickier to indicate the intended scope without somehow uploading pictures. They could, however, send thumbnails, or a PDF or ZIP file of thumbnails, or whatever else is convenient to indicate the intended scope.
  • More broadly, if they know and trust you, then they could make a broader authorization, e.g. that you have general permission to upload on their behalf; they could either specify a license for you to use, or (I believe, less sure on this) leave it up to you to select the license on their behalf. - Jmabel ! talk 21:07, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Deletion Request

Hi, I nominated the following file for deletion [3]. It is my own work and not used anywhere. When would it be deleted? Are you waiting for any further info from my end?

Thanks, Nittavinoda (talk) 12:09, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

  • You uploaded this 2 months ago with an irrevocable license. While we normally extend the courtesy of allowing about a week for someone to change their mind (especially to deal with accidental uploads) I personally don't see a basis for deletion here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: , I was under the impression that we could nominate unused pictures for deletion ({{subst:prod}}. Why would this nomination not fall under that category? Nittavinoda (talk) 06:34, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
You can nominate it, but it's unlikely to be deleted. {{subst:prod}} is an English-language Wikipedia thing, not on Commons, but if you want to nominate it for deletion, depending on how you are set up you probably have a "nominate for deletion" button on your left nav; if not, you can directly use {{Delete}} and follow the directions. But, as I say, I believe it is unlikely to be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 09:36, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

It looks like one, but if there are subtle differences between sub-categories it's usually better to use the master category and let someone more knowledgeable about the subject sort it out, this happens all the time with the taxonomy of species on Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 22:38, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

The file itself appears to have an error. At least on my screen, it loads only the upper third of the image. The solution would have been to upload the correct image again under the same name (using the new upload link ander the image version table). However, the image has already been uplodaed under a new name as File:Water Lily Photographed by Trisorn Triboon.jpg. The image named above should therefore be deleted. This may be done by a speedy-deletion using
{{speedy|damaged file, replaced by [[:File:Water Lily Photographed by Trisorn Triboon.jpg]] --~~~~}}
Il set the deletion request into the file description page. --Bjs (talk) 13:17, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Image not showing up in its category

The image File:Baldham, Lager archäologische Staatssammlung, 2.jpeg is in Category:Staatsatelier Thorak but when I open the category it does not show up there. I purged both the category and the image but that did not help. How is that possible? Any hints are appreciated.

By the way, selecting “purge” from the category menu seemed to do just a mere reload. Only when I appended “?action=purge” to the URL I was prompted to confirm the purge. -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 11:51, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Purging doesn't usually fix this kind of problem. Doing a null edit (edit/save image page without changing anything) does. --Magnus (talk) 11:56, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
I also sometimes used a null edit on the category page (edit/save the category page without changing anything) to fix a problem that could not be resolved by purge. --Bjs (talk) 13:07, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. The image now appears in the category though I didn't do anything (the history shows no edits – maybe null edits are not listed). Pelikana (see two sections above) seems to have had a similar problem. -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 14:52, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Extended footnotes

Sometimes footnotes extend from the foot of one page onto the foot of the next (I have even seen them run to three pages). However, I am not aware of any means of combining them. I have such a one on "Sarah Sheppard - L. E. L.pdf/76" running onto "Sarah Sheppard - L. E. L.pdf/77". At the moment, I have used another ref /ref at the top of page 77, so the two notes will run one after the other. However, the two halves will inevitably have consecutive footnote numbers in the finished work and, as the break is mid-sentence, the text will be disjointed. As this is a fairly common occurrence, I am wondering if there is a fix for this that combines the separate parts of a single note. It is also possible there might be a hyphenated word but thank goodness I don't have this problem at the moment! Esme Shepherd (talk) 20:59, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Esme Shepherd,
Which page are you talking about? Is it on Wikisource or Wikipedia? We don't use much footnotes on Commons, and you haven't create any page with footnotes here. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:11, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Esme Shepherd (talk) 15:38, 18 June 2018 (UTC) Sorry, I think I have found the solution in the help pages for Wikisource, i.e. Advanced:Footnotes that continue over page breaks. I have now used ref name="p76" in line with its instructions.

One minor issue though: to force the printer markings to the foot of the page (on page 77), i.e. below the footnote, I have had to put them into a ref /ref as well. As this will disappear in the final product, I don't suppose this matters.

@Mark T. Wright: Where were they taken? When did the photographers die?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:29, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Mark T. Wright: Unpublished works can be quite tricky depending on the country of origin (which itself can be tricky to establish for unpublished works). For works from the United States, {{PD-US-unpublished}} applies if the author died before 1948; if the death date of its author is not known, and the work was created before 1898; or if it is an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, and it was created before 1898. Such works will be in the public domain and therefore do not have a copyright holder. For other countries, see Commons:Copyright rules by territory. In some countries (particularly European ones), publishing a previously unpublished work may entitle you to publication rights. LX (talk, contribs) 17:40, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Jmabel: If it happened recently, I'd suspect that Sarang's recent edits at {{Created with Hugin}} and/or {{Created with ...}} might have something to do with it (or that Sarang might at least have an idea of what's wrong, having worked with those templates). Mad Pride

Hello,

I started to write a section on Mad Pride called Mad Pride Flags. I saw it when I was editing on my cell but now on my laptop, it is gone. Also, I had an image that I had created when I worked for the NJ Self-Help Group Clearinghouse and I was informed that it was flagged as a possible copywrite infringement. The image had all of the mad pride flags that had been submitted. Have I lost my work altogether or is it awaiting approval?

thanks in advance,

Michael — Preceding unsigned comment added by MichaelAdamReale (talk • contribs) 16:25, 19 June 2018‎ (UTC)

MichaelAdamReale: The question above is your account's first and so far only edit on any Wikimedia project.
There was an edit made to en:Mad Pride over at English Wikipedia earlier today made without the use of an account, which sounds like what you are describing above. That edit was reverted by a bot which reverts edits containing links in ways that are against English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines such as en:Wikipedia:External links. If you have questions about that, you should ask them over at English Wikipedia.
As for the image you tried to upload here on Commons, your upload was stopped by a filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. Since you describe the image as containing works created by other people, it would seem that the image was not indeed your own work, which would mean that the filter worked as intended. @CamiloYepesABI: Did you take the pictures yourself? Regards, Yann (talk) 17:14, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
CamiloYepesABI: Only the legitimate copyright holder(s) can give an appropriate permission for publication. In the case of photos of buildings, the copyright holders will most likely be the photographer (or the photographer's employee). In the case of pictures of bottles, the copyright holder will most likely be the photographer (or the photographer's employee) and the company holding the copyright of the bottle labels (see Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Product packaging), meaning permission from both is required. For information on how to obtain and submit an appropriate permission from the copyright holder(s), see Commons:OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 17:20, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Well, I would think one obvious example would be [4] which is uploaded at en.wp and used under fair use. Auntof6 always opposed me to create "Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan", "Category:Snowy landscapes in Taiwan", and "Category:Snow in Taiwan". In fact we need to put it in the category because we have the photos of snow scenes in Taiwan. I have discussed with him(see: "here"), but he just don't want to hear. What do you think I should do?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:15, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952: The linked discussion says nothing about Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan or Category:Snowy landscapes in Taiwan. As far as I can see it's entirely about whether "snow" categories should be subcategories of "winter" categories. In the absence of any explanation of why the categories shouldn't exist, I'd suggest that you create and populate them. I presume they were speedily deleted in May for being empty, so as long as they're populated there should be no problem recreating them. --bjh21 (talk) 15:37, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
I don't remember specifically what, if anything, was in the cityscape and landscape categories. It might have been that Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan didn't contain actual cityscapes -- not every photo of a city is a cityscape. Likewise, not every photo outside of a city is a landscape. I'll watch these categories: if/when they get populated, that might remind me what the issue was. --Auntof6 (talk) 15:54, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
Auntof6 seems to have fixed ideas about countries he doesn't know much about. His view of countries like Category:Pakistan don't always fit into his idea of how categories "should" be. I had this trouble with him, and he used Category:Japan as an example of how categories "should" work for Pakistan. Japan and Pakistan cannot be compared: Pakistan has existed only since 1947 and a multitude of languages are spoken there, unlike Japan. I don't think certain categories should be forced on countries for which they do not work by those who seem not to understand the particulars of that country. Christina Warinner. messed up on her image

Hello,

I needed an image of Christina Warinner for a Wikipedia biography that I am writing. I searched Wikicommons for an image, found one. I could see that it came from a Flickr photo with permission 2.0 Attribute. I needed to crop the image for a portrait for the bio, so I downloaded, cropped the original image and uploaded the crop with "crop" in the file name.

Somehow I deleted "crop" somewhere along the way, and I think my cropped image wiped out the original image. Could you recover that original image of Christina Warinner TED talk? thanks MauraWen (talk) 22:35, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

MauraWen: I don't know where you found a photo as I can't find one her, so please provide the file name. I assume you are asking about File:Christina Warinner TED talks.jpg that you uploaded. You did not provide a url for that image but I found it and unfortunately we do no accept images with commercial or derivative restrictive licences. I've tagged it for deletion so you will have to try and find a freely licenced image instead. Ww2censor (talk) 22:59, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Ww2censor: thanks for explaining that to me and the quick response. MauraWen (talk) 23:03, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: "For photo inquiries, including high resolution images, captions, and photo credits, please contact Dr. Christina Warinner (warinner shh mpg de)." You could ask her to send a nice picture she owns the rights for to OTRS. I assume you already made sure she meets notability requirements for Wikipedia? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:55, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks for the advice. Warinner is one of the red listed women that I am working on as part of the Women in Archaeology Task Force. She meets notability requirements. I have requested photos from biography subjects previously. I usually don't get a response or I get sent photos I have trouble uploading to Wikicommons because the owner did not provide all the required information. I wish it was easier, images are a great addition to Wikipedia biographies MauraWen (talk) 06:06, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: You could also ask her to put a photo she owns the copyright for on her own website with CC BY(-SA) license/notice. That may be less cumbersome (and surely faster) than OTRS. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:24, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks! That is a great idea. I have requested photos and permission info to be sent to OTRS before. A few people have been interested, but share with me that they are too busy or its just too much trouble to do that, that is why I usually end up with their photo and incomplete information for successful upload. I will try what you suggest. Where do I learn more about "CC BY (-SA)"? and how to describe that to someone I contact? Images and their copyrights are very confusing to me. Still learning. Do you consider a cape to be a "place"? Because none of the photos in the category shown a cape. If anything, then it should be like "this"! All files put in the category are photos of a cape.--Kai3952 (talk) 01:46, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

How to redirect an image

I've heard that if two files are the same, one should be redirected to the other. How is this done? These two files are exactly the same:

Additional question about redirect:

One is slightly smaller than the other. Kalbbes (talk) 00:32, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

I used the {{Duplicate}} template, but there seemed to be no way to fill it out correctly. Hopefully it will still work. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 14:55, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Kalbbes: I've tagged File:An Asian suspension bridge -a.jpg for you. You need to point to the duplicate image and both images do not need the tag. Review how to tag them by looking in edit mode or at the {{duplicate}} template page. Ww2censor (talk) 15:27, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Ww2censor:Thanks so very much. I looked at your edit on the file so I saw what I was doing wrong. I didn't understand that on the temple the file name should be within the template, as in {{duplicate|File name xxx}}. Now I know. Gratefully, Kalbbes (talk) 15:54, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I uploaded this file from EUROSTAT. I also gave the link to EUROSTAT's page which seems to effectively say that EUROSTAT material is freely shareable, HOWEVER, they do not quote an actual tag? Most EU material seems to be freely shareable and they usually give the tags, but EUROSTAT does not seem to do this? Thank you. Britishfinance (talk) 12:52, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Need help with a file description for infobox image on w:Dog...

...and maybe elsewhere. ... Oh no, I think it's on the en.WP genus or higher-up for dog instead!

I've got blurry eyes & brain due to illness and I will not be able to take this on. I don't know if there's a way to tag a file description that needs re-writing here like on en.Wikipedia. Template:Help showed nothing to my eyes. Heh!

Anyway, details (except I was probably wrong about the en.WP article that took me there!) here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:Familia_Canidae.jpg

I'm not sure if these file are suitable for added "Category:Waste"?

Please take a look at these edits: [5], [6], [7], and [8]. The uploader said(see: [9] ): "The temple is not a waste, but there's waste around." But I did not see any "wastes" in the photo except a temple. I'm not sure if these file are suitable for added "Category:Waste"?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:49, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

There is some rubbish to the left from the temple. Ruslik (talk) 20:11, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
There also seem to be badly corroded steel waste bins in front of and to the left of the street entrance of the temple, visible in the 2nd through 4th photos.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 20:20, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
The question to be asked is "would anyone in their right mind use this image to illustrate the concept of "waste"?". I'd say not, because it's merely incidental. If we apply categories to every last little thing depicted in an image, we are not categorising, we are tagging, and Commons does not use tags. Feel free to remove them. posting a photo

Hello, I want to post two band photos which are the work of Lisa Rich. She has given us permission to use them as we like, and emailed Wikimedia Commons with the following email a couple of months ago? I'd like to upload them, and just want to verify that a can and should check the Creative Commons Attribution- Share Alike 4.0 International box.

Please let me know if this is correct and/or if I should do something else.

Thank you, Max Zimmet Mzimmet (talk) 03:12, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

@Mzimmet: Hi,
The copyright holder has to send the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:18, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Mzimmet: If the copyright holder did actually send an email then she should have received an OTRS ticket number. OTRS has rather a long backlog, so it may not have been processed yet as the backlog is 99 days. You can use the ticket number to ask at the OTRS noticeboard. Good luck. ShareAlike not Share Alike

I've only just noticed that there's a minor formatting issue with many of the CC license tags. More specifically, most of the Cc-by-sa-xxx templates erroneously use a space within the phrase "Share Alike" that, according to the licenses on Creative Commons (example), should actually be "ShareAlike". Perhaps it's not a big issue but it irked me enough to want to correct it. However, having seen the multitude of affected templates I decided that it's probably best if I discuss any potential changes first. Or better yet, there may be a way of fixing them than editing each template by hand. Any takers?

Also, could somebody please explain to me the difference(s) between CC BY-SA 1.0, CC BY-SA 2.0, CC BY-SA 2.5, CC BY-SA 3.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0? nagualdesign 08:28, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Nagualdesign: Commons:Signatures requires your signature to contain a link to your user page, user talk page and/or contributions. That means on this project. Please adjust yours accordingly.
Personally, I'm more irked by CamelCase than spaces, but yes, that is the official name – at least in English. Creative Commons don't even stick to it themselves in the official German translation or in their description of the aspect. But it would be hard to argue against consistency with CC's most commonly used styling.
For version history, see creativecommonswiki:License Versions#License Versioning History. LX (talk, contribs) 09:14, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
I've amended my signature, although as explained on my talk page I don't visit it, so it's pretty pointless for anyone to try to contact me there.
Thanks for the reply. I might just correct the English language versions of the CC licenses if the mood takes me. And thanks for the link too. From what I've read the main differences seem to be greater legal robustness, but for all practical purposes they're pretty much identical. nagualdesign 13:59, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
Notifications work across Wikimedia projects, so if someone leaves a message on your user talk page here, you'll see a notification while working on English Wikipedia, unless you've explicitly turned them off.
Yes, the different versions of the licenses are supposed to have the same practical implications, that's the idea. LX (talk, contribs) 14:53, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
Ah.. I didn't realize I could turn on notifications from other wikis, and I don't remember ever turning them off. Thanks for that. nagualdesign 17:12, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
One thing to note for the different versions of the ShareAlike licenses is what licenses they are compatible with. Notably, CC BY-SA 1.0 is only compatible with itself, so derivatives of CC BY-SA 1.0 works must also be licensed CC BY-SA 1.0. CC BY-SA 2.0 and up are compatible with their own or later versions, and CC BY-SA 4.0 is also compatible with the Free Art License 1.3 and one-way compatible with GPLv3. clpo13(talk) 17:41, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Unstrip size limit exceeded - unbrowsable categories

Hi,

I don't know if it is a common and known limitation, but browsing a few categories result in "Unstrip size limit exceeded (5,000,000)", which does not allow to see the pictures assigned to it. Other categories are usually divided into several smaller parts (like 2017 archive, 2016 archive and so on), but few of them remain unbrowsable - here is the example category, which I found recently: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images/Subject/Places/Natural_structures

The complete list seems to available through hidden category: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Pages_where_the_unstrip_size_limit_is_exceeded

I would be very grateful, if someone (looking at scale of the problem, one of the admins I presume) would like to spend some time trying to fix this issue. Also, don't know if uploading images to this categories is still possible (if not, it is even more urgent problem)

Thanks for reading

ForgottenAnt

@Ghouston: You're right, galleries, galleries. Not sure about limit, but it looks like there is one (although there are heavy-loaded galleries like this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images/Subject/Places/Mixed which are still ok). As I said earlier, usually larger galleries are divided into smaller ones (showed example has "more..." link in order to see the rest), and probably there was not too much attention into "Places/Natural structures" gallery, and unfortunately it fall into "size limit exceeded" category. After clicking "edit" there are all of the references to the pictures, so what is needed now is putting half of it into new gallery page and link it from the main one (same as in "Places/Mixed"). Thanks for an instant reply! — Preceding unsigned comment added by ForgottenAnt (talk • contribs) 07:08, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Maharaja Ummed Singh, the father of aviation in Jodhpur -RAJASTHAN HISTORY

[HISTORY] There is a special connection between Maharaja Ummed Singh and the aircraft. The year in which the first aircraft flew first in the air in the air, the same year Maharaja Ummed Singh was born. In the year when the aircraft made the first tour of the world, in the same year, Maharaja Ummed Singh established the first Aviation Department in any of the country's princely states.

Maharaja Ummed Singh

Maharaja Ummed Singh was the ruler of Marwar princely state in 1918 AD. At that time, he was a minor. Therefore, the work of governance was run by Pratap, the Prime Minister of Jodhpur. Regency council was established to assist them. At that time administrative work was under way in the state of Marwar. Unfortunately in 1922 Sir Pratap passed away. The following year, in 1923, Maharaja Ummed Singh got the right to make governance decisions. After this, the work of administrative reforms in Marwar principality further increased. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rajhistory1 (talk • contribs) 12:15, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

--rimshottalk 21:46, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

Files uploaded but lacking a page

I have uploaded a set of photographs using Upload Wizard. All of the uploads were successful, but two of the files, Kenilworth Methodist Church northwest.jpg and Kenilworth Methodist Church northwest.jpg, seem to lack a normal page. Instead of the "Edit" and "History" tabs at the top of the page there is one called "Create". The description, location and categories that I added using Upload Wizard seem to be missing.

Because there is no "Edit" tab, I cannot see how to add the missing details. I tried using the "Create" tab to insert the missing details, but it would not let me. How can I add the missing information to these two files?

Arabic

Why do most pages have no Arabic? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adam elmahalawy (talk • contribs) 12:01, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

That's most likely not a 'why' but a 'how come': since nobody has added it. @Pegona123: You tried to use Special:UploadWizard? What went wrong? Any error message? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 10:07, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi Pegona123! I see from your filter log that you encountered an upload filter that prevents low-resolution and PNG uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload process that you used. The reason for this filter is that such uploads overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. A 1022×1278 pixel image is quite small and more typical of a file downloaded from the Internet than what a camera would produce. Furthermore, cameras typically produce JPEG files rather than PNG files, which are more commonly the result of screenshots. If you did indeed personally create this photograph, why is it so small and why is it a PNG? LX (talk, contribs) 10:33, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Hey, LX I don't have the original copy, but the picture is on my personal instagram so I screen shotted it, I then tried to find another version which may not have the instagram filter, hence the reason for PNG. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pegona123 (talk • contribs) 11:13, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

It depends whether it's below ground, I think. I can't tell for sure from the photo, but it looks like it may just be a passage under a bridge. --ghouston (talk) 08:13, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Growing up in New York, I heard "underpass" used even for ones that, like this, appear to be above ground. - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@Ghouston and Jmabel: Should it be changed to "Category:Tunnels"?--Kai3952 (talk) 09:41, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Underpasses is already a subcategory of tunnels. --ghouston (talk) 11:01, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
I know, but I have added Category:Underpasses in New Taipei to File:ROC-MOTC-TANFB and ROC-MOI-NPA-NHPB 20160521.jpg. If you are not sure if it is a underpass, then what should I do? File:ROC-MOTC-TANFB and ROC-MOI-NPA-NHPB 20160521.jpg should be changed from "Category:Underpasses in New Taipei" to "Category:Tunnels in New Taipei"?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:54, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Is the definite article "the" needed here before "Taipei 101"?

I recently created "Category:Remote views of Taipei 101", but I found that the use of the definite article "the" in the page name "Category:Views from the Taipei 101". Is the definite article "the" needed here before "Taipei 101"?--Kai3952 (talk) 04:45, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Can't sign into mobile, does anyone else have it?

Since yesterday I can't sign into the mobile version of Wikimedia Commons and this only affects Wikimedia Commons, I've tried using Ll the "solutions" listed at the Phabricator but I still can't sign in, this same issue happens across multiple devices using multiple browsers, does anyone know how to fix it? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 16:03, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Are you able to login if you switch to the desktop version on the same device? Ruslik (talk) 18:59, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: yes, in fact the issue exclusively manifests on Wikimedia Commons and only using the mobile environment, while using the desktop environment no issues seem to occur. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:19, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Purge gives Error 429

Hi, folks! Two days ago I uploaded a new version of File:Compendio de la Historia de la Ciudad de Guatemala Tomos I - II.pdf. No thumbnail is being generated. The options available in Help:Purge don't work for me. When trying to generate a single thumbnail gives me a Server error ("Error: 429, Too Many Requests"):

Any idea of what is happening? -Aleator (talk) 16:01, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

The file must be corrupted. I uploaded it again as File:Compendio de la Historia de la Ciudad de Guatemala (tomos I - II).pdf and the problem remained. Then I tried to shrink it through pdf.io but an unespecified error rised. Then I uploaded a new version, a black and white version, and the thumbnails finally generate OK. Solved! -Aleator (talk) 20:56, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
