Hi, can someone replace "Doctcur" by "Doctor Ludovic O'Followell"  ? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 15:26, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Done, using Visual File Change. Only limitation is that if this occurred more than once in a description I might have missed second & subsequent uses (I didn't think of using /g/ until after the fact).

Which seems perfectly acceptable to me, assuming you when you are in the media viewer you are still on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is essentially a client of Commons, and is perfectly entitled to make its own decision about how to caption a photo. If your issue is that their media viewer isn't editable, that would be entirely Wikipedia's issue, not Commons's. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Special Uploads Log

Hello,

I uploaded this image from my computer yesterday but I cannot find it on my special uploads list. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Uploads/Achat1234

I can only find it on this list: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Achat1234&ilshowall=1

I have searched the archives but I cannot find a solution. Would deleting the file and reuploading it help?Achat1234 (talk) 07:33, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

@Achat1234: The image is not visible in your uploads list because the most recent version of this image has not been uploaded by you but is instead overwritten by User:Embedded Data Bot. When you check the "Include old versions of files" option you will see your upload, which is now indeed an older version of this file. Reuploading the image will not help unless you also remove the embedded data section first; otherwise the bot will simply overwrite it again. MKFI (talk) 08:28, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

So should I nominate the image for deletion so that the entire page is deleted? I can then upload the version of the image containing the embedded data. Achat1234 (talk) 08:35, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

@Achat1234: JPGs with embedded data are not allowed in Wikimedia Commons. Ankry (talk) 09:40, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

I added a cropped version of the said image without the embedded data. It also seems to have fixed the problem as it is uploaded by me. Achat1234 (talk) 09:51, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

@Achat1234: What data did you embed, and why?   — Jeff G. ツ 11:21, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

I did not embed any data. I learned that it contained some embedded data when the Embedded Data Bot overwrote the original version. I really did not know that it was there. This is the first time that I learned about such embedded data in this image. Achat1234 (talk) 11:24, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

So should I strip images of any embedded data before uploading so that the Embedded Data Bot does not overwrite it? Achat1234 (talk) 11:30, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

I removed embedded data from my most recent batch of images using the Windows Explorer option: "Remove Properties and Personal Information". This significantly reduced the sizes of the images and The Embedded Data Bot did not overwrite the files. So does that mean that the embedded data in the images was removed? Achat1234 (talk) 12:45, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

The bot removed an embedded thumbnail (62x70) in the image. CC @Jeff G.: --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:22, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

So I did manage to strip the embedded data from the most recent batch of images that I uploaded, right? I will do the same thing with the images that I upload from now on then. Achat1234 (talk) 02:28, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

@Raduga0210: sorry to reply in English; perhaps a Ukrainian speaker can chime in. First of all, each Wikimedia project is separate and has its own policies. Nobody here can decide what pictures should be used in English or Ukrainian Wikipedia articles. Second, the edits of yours I see at Olexiy Poroshenko are just changes to the English spelling of his name, nothing to do with the photo. You were reverted and asked to discuss your proposed change on the Talk page, (EN-WP generally uses the spelling that’s most common in English-language sources, and I note that all three English citations in the article end his name with Y—although they vary in their transliteration of кс as either X or KS.) Third, I don’t quite understand your remark about the Vadim Chuprina photo: is it a portrait of a different person than the subject? (Sorry again, I am relying on a machine translation.) Finally, if editing Wikimedia projects is part of your paid employment, you are required by the Terms of Use to disclose your conflict of interest in at least one of three places: on your user page, on the Talk page of articles you edit, or in each edit summary.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:37, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

You're not on Wikipedia (wikipedia.org) right now. This site is Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org), a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. (Knowing what site you're on is a good practice in general to avoid being subjected to phishing scams.) So the first step would be to go to Wikipedia and selecting the language edition that you would like to edit. If that's the English version, you might want to start with en:Wikipedia:Your first article. LX (talk, contribs) 12:56, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Can I upload a graph I created that shows data collected by others?

I wish to upload, for future use in a Wikipedia article, a graph of annual abortion rates in the United States from 1973 through 2014. I created the graph myself, but the raw data was collected by the Guttmacher Institute. The abortion data from 1991 through 2014 is freely available on the internet, but I took the data for the years 1973 through 1990 from an article that is behind a paywall. I know that it would be OK for me to use the data in a Wikipedia article, because on Wikipedia one may cite works that are not free, but I'm not sure if it is OK for me to upload my graph. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thiesen (talk • contribs) 21:07, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

@Frostpolar: Cat-a-lot can help with that. Find your uploads in maintenance categories like Category:Media needing categories as of 23 November 2017 and move/copy them to better categories from there using Cat-a-lot. How to find a photo exif data?

And metadata? Artix Kreiger (talk) 14:49, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

@Artix Kreiger: For images uploaded at Commons, you can find some of the more important parts of the EXIF right at the bottom of each file description page. For seeing the full information, I'd recommend Jeffrey's Image Metadata Viewer. Any decent photo editor should also have a function to view (and possibly edit) the meta data. If all else fails, there's still en:ExifTool (and ExifToolGUI if you don't like the command line). Hope that helps? --El Grafo (talk) 16:03, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
To be clear en:EXIF is one kind of meta data that is commonly used for photos, and it is stored directly in the image file. EXIF is probably the most relevant standard, but there are some others like XMP. --El Grafo (talk) 16:07, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

help

So, for movie stars you can type their name in the search and BOOM every star has a Wikipedia page anyone can google and read (ie; Kid Rock, Justin Beiber, Quintin Tarrntino, etc..)

1. After typing what I thought was the type of page I'm trying to create (as mentioned above), using every single link wiki page, to wiki page, to wiki page to wiki page, to wiki page, so on and so forth. I am now more confused than I was before I did any of that. My issue now is, I don't know what type of page I need to create to get the desired affect. (google search {name}, *scroll, {name}-wikipedia google result) I need to create 2 business pages, 1 page for me, and 1 page for a dear friend of mine. I attempted to create my friends first, but was having trouble uploading images sent to me FOR USE ON WIKIPEDIA by said person(s), which is how I ran into this whole confusing mess in the first place and I now do not even know what type of page I need, how to upload pics and/or why it won't let me, and I do not understand all of this ridiculous legal jar-gen. Please do not reply with more clickable links. Step-by-Step instruction is what I am seeking, and NO this is not for slander or anything of that nature. Just have some business to conduct with other large companies, of which will google our personal names, and the business. Please help!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Charleen Callahan (talk • contribs) 00:37, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

  • This is Wikimedia Commons. There are no articles on Commons, nor are there "business pages" on any Wikimedia Foundation site I'm familiar with.
  • In Wikipedia, generally you shouldn't be creating pages about yourself or about someone with whom you are associated; see en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.
  • Photos which are only "for use in Wikipedia" don't belong here on Commons. Commons is only for images that are either public domain or free licensed.
  • So I suspect that the reason you are confused is that you are trying to do things that are not allowed. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Is this really the users own photo?

This one seems strange and I came across this photo [1] because of the edit to this page [2] but I either it is not the users own work as a google search shows [3] or this user has a conflict of interest is my other guess. NZ Footballs Conscience (talk) 02:54, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Convenience link for the photo: File:PHILLIPLEO-3.jpg; for the wikipedia page Phillip Leo.
  • Any conflict of interest issue would be a matter for Wikipedia: it's OK for people connected to the subject to upload photos to Commons. So that would have to be taken up on Wikipedia, not here.
  • Photo was uploaded last June, and is higher resolution than any other version I see online, so I'm guessing it is legitimate. But if you disagree, you can nominate it for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 05:19, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Is this really a lost case ?

Dear Wikimedia helpers,

in August some pictures I uploaded had been deleted. I wrote to Permissions Wikimedia Commens and explained everything. One of the longest email exchange started. One of the pictures shows an author (Juliette Benzoni https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliette_Benzoni) who died almost two years ago and presented me years ago with her articles, photos ect. I explain:

1. the photo shows the author in 1963 signing her first bestseller (that is the reason I would love to upload that photo)

2. Juliette Benzoni is in the publishing house which does not exist anymore!

3. The photo was used in 1963 to introduce the new author Benzoni.

4. The photo was used in an Italian hardcover in the inside of the book. On the photo frontside and backside the photographer is not credited.

6. In the Newspaper 1963 (which does also not exist anymore today), the photo was used together with a small article. No photographer is credited.

7. On the flyer from 1963 where the book is introduced with the author signing her first bestseller, there is NO mentioning of the photographer.

I did all the research that was possible for me. I repeat, the firm does not exist anymore where I could ask who took that photo. The newspaper does not exist anymore. I checked all my old article's from that time which the late author gave me. Never was in any French newspaper back in 1963 the name of any photographer written! Benzoni died last year, when she gave me the photos. It never crossed my mind to ask her who took that photo.

I have sent my contact everything. Screenshots from my book, the newspaper article and from the flyer. I told him also that the photo is uploaded on my website. It seems to me my contact was not taking me seriously and I have had the impression he does not even understand what I write to him. We were talking in circles. I find this very odd that a few emails back he told me there would surely be a solution for this case. So I come here and ask all professional and verified Wikimedia Moderators, if there is really no possiblility to upload a photo which has been in a drawer for more than 50 years, to be shared on Wikimedia? Maybe it was the secretary who took that photo or a guest who happened to be in that office back in 1963. We can never no, they are all dead. The only person alive is the heiress of Juliette Benzoni and that is her daughter. She would gladly sign any email for me. So please have a heart someone and help me that the photo can be uploaded. thank you very much, Laramie1960 (talk) 20:08, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

You don’t mention the countries where the newspaper & flyer were published. AFAICT French law protects anonymous photos for 70 years after publication, so if that applies I don’t think this one would be considered free in France until 2034. Italian law provides only 50 years’ protection for anonymous works, which would have lapsed in 2014—but because that’s after the URAA cutoff date, in the USA the photo would be considered under copyright until 2059! I think your best bet will be to upload the photo directly to ENWP under a fair use rationale; the subject’s being deceased makes the case for irreplaceabilty.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:59, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
Dear Odysseus1479, I thank you that you took the time to come to my help. The country is France. The newspaper and the flyer were published in France 1963. Like I wrote above, the newspaper does not excist anymore as does not the publishing house. Do you think someone could help me and upload the photo directly to ENWP under those circumstances? I am afraid I would mess it up, my heart is on that photo because it is so unique, showing a future author signing her first international bestseller. An author who received from the French president the National Order of Merit one of the highest orders in France. I could give the link to the website to take the photo https://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/images/juliette/J-B-1963.jpg and I would love to add it on the article: Catherine (1963 novel) Thank you very much for helping me with this matter. Copyright help regarding File:COAST FM RADIO logo 08.pdf

The subject logo is for a Community Radio station of which I am a volunteer. What permissions would be required for me to use it in Wiki? The logo has no copyright.

--Radiogully (talk) 00:52, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Who owns the copyright? Does it remain with the artist who designed it, or has it been signed over in writing to the station? Or something else? - Jmabel ! talk 03:24, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Adding images of Trini football teams.

Hello. There are 2 teams in the TT Pro League without a club image on their wikipedia page and its been itching me for the longest while. The only way I know I could get them is from google images. Am I allowed to upload the images off Google Images or would that violate the rules.Jonytano20 (talk) 02:02, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

  • If they are sufficiently complex to be eligible for copyright, then they are presumably copyrighted and can't be hosted here on Commons except in the unlikely event that the copyright-holder would free-license them. However, you can probably use them on a non-free use basis in the English-language Wikipedia, which means uploading them to English-language Wikipedia, not here. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria and [:en:Template:Non-free_logo]]. - Jmabel ! talk 03:28, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Brittany or Bretagne?

So I created Category:Coins of Brittany for the coins of the Duchy of Brittany, but often I find native names being used more like "Noord-Holland" instead of "North Holland" or "Ostfriesland" instead of "East Frisia", so was I right in using the archaic (English) name "Brittany" instead of the modern (French) "Bretagne"? --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 14:05, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Not particularly a big deal, either way. It's easily changed if ever needed. The more important thing is to get the relevant content into a category. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
I believe English names are preferred for category titles; translations usually appear within language templates in the body. But native forms of proper names are sometimes used for disambiguation (see Zurich and Zürich for example), and in general seem to be widely accepted in practice—in accord with the project’s polyglot nature and its acceptance of non-English filenames. I note that while the coin cat’s parent is Duchy of Brittany, its siblings there are about half-and-half “Brittany” and “Bretagne”. My general rule of thumb is to follow the parent cat when in doubt, unless an overwhelming majority of siblings use a different form; I’ll also see how the English Wikipedia titles the topic. More consistency would be better IMO but, as Jmabel said, it’s not a big deal as long as the branches & leaves of the tree are properly arranged. Perhaps the “Structured Data” programme under development will provide impetus toward a more systematic treatment of category naming.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:00, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Possible error with the FlickrReview Bot

I'm curious as to why the bot couldn't correctly review File:I39 KalachurisTripuri GangeyaDeva 1 (8097362351) (2).jpg while it could do that with the over a hundred other images I uploaded from the same source today, as far as I can tell the license is located on the exact same spot on Flickr so the error must be on the side of the bot. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 14:49, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: This is a photo of a different coin altogether. Flickr users seem to be allowed to change their images willy-nilly as well as their licenses, so it's a good thing we have the bot. Further research appears to show https://www.flickr.com/photos/77612262@N07/8194360056 as the source. English descriptions would be nice.   — Jeff G. ツ 15:36, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
Ahhh, my bad, I should’ve seen that the Flickr2Commons tool added the wrong link 🔗, I’m not sure if I should manually add the correct link then, but I'll leave it like this for now.
English descriptions are redundant, French is an international language spoken all over the world and over 50% of the English vocabulary consists of Romance words (of which most are French) so anyone who can speak English has very little trouble reading French. English is a French dialect of German anyhow so I don't think that any English-speakers would complain.
Well, I’ll let a human reviewer review the file 📁 but both images have the same license so I don’t expect that file to be on the “Files for deletion” any time soon. Section resolved.

Finding content with a specific tag

Is there a way to find photos that have a specific tag on them? I’m trying to go around vectorizing images with the {{Convert to SVG}} tag on it. Thanks. ChromoCascade (talk) 17:40, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

You can search for "If an SVG form of this image is" (in quotes) in the file namespace. Ruslik (talk) 19:50, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) One general method is to go to the template page and click “What links here” on the left sidebar. However, many maintenance templates automatically categorize the pages they’re on (most of these cats being invisible). In this case, the categories for graphics wanting vectorization are under Images that should use vector graphics. Some are categorized by subject, others by file type; note also the “Top 200” pages, which list files that are used the most on sister projects.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:58, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

PDFs of text

Are there any rules covering the uploading of pdfs, containing self-written text about people, some partly based on the person's Facebook pages, as at File:PROF Ozumba.pdf ?

You could always download the image, adjust the brightness yourself and then click on "upload a new version" of the image which would replace the current one with the adjusted version. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:34, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Sliding this in above the “resolved“ note; no response required. @Donald Trung: looks like the user actually did that already. @Swazzo: it‘s not unusual for there to be a delay of minutes to hours before the servers get around to creating new thumbnails. Our photo keeps being deleted for infringement

I was looking through the commons to find an answer to my question, but I guess I didn't have the correct search terminology. Anyways, I took a photo (File:Pixel_2_Box_&_Phone_Photo_.jpg) of the Pixel 2 Google phone that I purchased and was uploading it onto the Pixel 2 wikipage. However, it keeps getting marked for copyright infringement. Since I took the photo, do I not own the photo and therefore can make it public? Or is it because the Google logo is in the photo that it keeps being marked for infringement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Idallas (talk • contribs) 22:25, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Motorola Xoom in Wikipedia

(talk) 14:57, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

How do I fix the text kerning on an SVG?

I vectorized two raster images File:Aris mod kl.png and File:ARIS Model.jpg to File:ARIS Model DE.svg and File:ARIS Model EN.svg, but the text is being rendered bizarrely by Commons. How would I fix this? Thanks. ChromoCascade (talk) 20:14, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

While we’re here, how would I link to an image without automatically rendering it? ChromoCascade (talk) 20:21, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
Never mind. I figured out the linking part. Sorry! I still need help with the SVG, though. ChromoCascade (talk) 20:24, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
@ChromoCascade: This is likely an issue with how Mediawiki generates png preview images from SVG files (the actual SVG file itself looks fine to me in Firefox). There are a number of known problems with text in SVG and how our software renders it, but after a quick glance at the SVG's source code it doesn't look like any of them apply here. I have no idea on how to fix this – you might have better chances at getting an expert's opinion at the Graphics village pump. --El Grafo (talk) 12:17, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

SVG Logos

There are a lot of Logos as SVG in Wikipedia, like Java, .NET, Google Chrome, etc.
But Google Chromium and Google Fuchsia only exists as PNG.
Now I have seen for both offical SVG files:
https://storage.googleapis.com/chrome-infra-public/logo/chromium.svg
https://storage.googleapis.com/fuchsia-infra/logo/fuchsia.svg
Is it allowed to upload them on Wikimedia Commons, so that they can be used in Wikipedia?
If it is allowed, then please upload them and replacing on this pages

with the svg versions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theuserbl (talk • contribs) 13:50, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

As additinal information:
The Google Chrome logo exists as SVG on Wikimedia
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Google_Chrome_icon_%28September_2014%29.svg
Between the normal Google Chrome and Chromium differs - as I know - onlöy in color. But the source of the SVG files itself differs a lot — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theuserbl (talk • contribs) 14:02, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

@Theuserbl: I found Chromium here File:Chromium 11 Logo.svg, but this is the old one. IMHO the SVGs can be uploaded. PS: It is a bit curios, the version from 11 is still the same as in the actual branch so the different (more blueish) PNG version is only the icon version. -- User: Perhelion 15:18, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

How to add new logo to page

Hi I am new to Wikipedia. I am trying to upload our new company logo to our page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fried,_Frank,_Harris,_Shriver_%26_Jacobson

I have tried doing so and it says my account is not auto confirmed, but I have tried to meet the criteria to become confirmed. Can I upload the logo via the commons page? In the English Wikipedia you need to be Autoconfirmed (4days account and 10 edits) to be allowed to upload pictures.

How i get permission for upload and using google images ?

--User-001 (talk) 22:12, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

  • I can't think of any way Google images is germane other than as a way to find the image. I would imagine this would be copyrighted, unless there is a very specific reason it wouldn't be (e.g. demonstration that there had been no copyright notice as required under U.S. law at the time, or that the copyright was not renewed). If it's copyrighted, no one except the owner of the copyright can grant a license. - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
@User-001: You have permission for uploading. You can enable "GoogleImages tab" by searching for "Google" on Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. This file's source https://home2hollywood.wordpress.com/editorials/dolores-del-rio-the-face-of-deco/ has no indications of a free license. It appears to be a movie studio promotional photo for Dolores del Río, whose movie career did not start until 1925, so it is probably still copyrighted. If you upload files that are your own work, and either not published elsewhere, or published elsewhere with a free license, you shouldn't have any problems. If you want to upload a file that's published elsewhere without a free license, then you can verify that you are the photographer or copyright holder using OTRS. --ghouston (talk) 02:13, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Assuming that you are Carlos Taylhardat, there are at least three ways to do this. Amplifying on what Ghouston said above:
  • You could indicate at https://artofheadshots.com/ that a particular photo or photos are released under the cc-by-sa-3.0 license. That might be simplest, and would allow someone to restore the photo immediately if you provide a link here to such a statement.
  • You could release this single photo from that site under the cc-by-sa-3.0 license by an email, as described at COM:OTRS and as mentioned above by Ghouston. If at all possible, send the email from an address associated with artofheadshots.com. This is probably the least useful of the three options: OTRS will typically take a month or two to get around to it; the photo will eventually be restored.
  • A third way (possibly combined with the first) would take as long as the second for this particular photo, but would set things up better for the future. Send a mail to OTRS, but rather than releasing a particular picture, indicate that you are User:Taylhardat and that any uploads you make here on Commons of material from artofheadshots.com is authorized by that site. That would give you an OTRS ticket number that you could use for any future uploads of material from your site, and you wouldn't have to go through this process again. - Jmabel ! talk 02:31, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Blacklisted user

Hello 👋🏻 everyone,

I was about to upload this album earlier today and then I saw that the upload was blocked because this user (Manhhai) is blacklisted on Flickr2Commons, is there way I can get specific albums whitelisted for upload? And if so, where should I request this? --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 12:17, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

@Lymantria: You made this edit, would you care to comment?   — Jeff G. ツ 13:06, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
That edit was 4 years ago, I don't recall what was the actual reason. But I suppose that there were several uploads from the manhai-account showing non-free images, resulting in deletions. The given album seems to be PD in Vietnam (before 1960), but is it in the USA? --Lymantria (talk) 13:33, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
I'm not sure as I can't find any information on the death of the author, so I will not attempt to upload them as the saying goes here on Wikinedia Commons “when in doubt, don’t”, but it’s not usual to see photographs from the 1930’s here so I had assumed that it was no longer copyrighted as I was looking for French copyright laws regarding this issue for quite some time. I fully understand why Manhhai was blacklisted as this author basically doesn't allow for batch uploads, sometimes you have albums of let's say 40 cc-by-2.0 images and then one “© All rights reserved” image, or have them scattered all around, in fact I originally planned to upload 7 batches from this user until I reduced it to two (this one and this one) because of how chaotically they add rights to their images. The albums themselves only say “Thanh-Ba Photo” so there’s no real information on who made these photographs to begin with. Löschung einer alten Bild-Version

Liebe Leute,

I'm confused. (1) what is the basis on which a copyright still persists for these 128-year-old images? (2) If, indeed, the Landesarchiv Berlin owns copyright, it would seem to me that we need them to send an email as described at COM:OTRS (or COM:OTRS/de).
If these are, indeed, copyrighted I have no objection to deleting the high-res versions on which they did not intend to grant rights. - Jmabel ! talk 00:56, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
It is not, that they own the copyright. But they are the archive and they were so nice to make me a scan and allowed me to upload it. But on condition that I upload a max. 800px wide image. Quite possible that there's no right they can rely on but I still want to make other sources of the Landesarchiv public and I depend on their collaboration.
Publishing archive material on Wikipedia seems to be still quite new to the staff and I am still in progress to convince them of the necessity of public availability etc pp but for the moment now I would be very happy if I could show the Landesarchiv that I stand to our agreement.
Thanks,

Done as requested, but...
  • These images still need categories. I'd recommend you create a new category for the specific building, if one does not already exist.
  • In the future, please don't describe someone as a Rechteinhaber when they are not (your upload summary).

  • Convenience link: File:penguin range.png.
  • It looks like you have repeatedly (and successfully) uploaded the same version. Probably a caching problem, likely on your own machine but possibly up the line someplace. It will settle, give it time.
  • That said, I'm not sure you should have uploaded over this file. It gives a specific data source; you seem to have drawn on a different data source. The statement about source on the page is now inaccurate (it doesn't describe your file). It seems to me that you should have uploaded to a different file name, stating your data source in the {{Information}} template. - Jmabel ! talk 06:51, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

Bug in "Upload a new version of this file"

There seems to be a bug in the "Upload a new version of this file" section of images. I modified the map of the second battle of Tikrit (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Encirclement_of_Tikrit_2015.jpeg) in Google Sketchup so it was readable (computerized instead of handwriting and colored pencil). The problem is, the file I uploaded does not show in the thumbnail preview or the image preview. It shows the original instead of the new map except when "current" the thumbnail under "file history" is clicked on for the full page(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9b/Encirclement_of_Tikrit_2015.jpeg), but the thumbnail itself shows both original versions. Any idea how to fix? Thanks.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 16:20, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

@PlanespotterA320: Works for me, probably a cache issue, better to not COM:OVERWRITE.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:29, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
Should I just upload separately and state that it is a derivative work? Because then it would not show in the file history. Also how can I delete the old version to prevent duplicates while leaving the original pencil version? --PlanespotterA320 (talk) 16:49, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

How to upload a photo under special conditions..

Hello everyone, about two weeks ago I asked for help about a photo to be uploaded. I titled the subject "is this really a lost case". Two nice Wikipedians answered me and I did likewise. The problem was about an old photo from 1963 (taken in France) where we cannot find out anymore who took that photo. I was told by this one Wikipedian that in cases as such there are exceptions. Unfortunatelly the person did not answer me anymore. I have gone over the Archives and I just cannot find my question which was called "Is this really a lost case". I had been in contact with "Permission Wikimedia Commens", not just once about this matter. I copy here his exact message to me on 6 December 2017:

the fact that we do not know who the heirs are is completely different to not having heirs. I cannot help you on that with a ticket, because I have no proof that the legal owner of the right gave thier approval for the publication. If other users have a solution, it will be for the best.

I repeat, there is no way to find out who took the photo here: https://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/images/juliette/J-B-1963.jpg
1. The person on the photo who would have known, has died last year on 7 February 2016 Juliette Benzoni.
2. The publishing house Opera Mundi where this was taken does not exist anymore.
3. The newspaper where this photo was seen in 1963 FRANCE-SOIR does not exist anymore.
4. On the photo or in the newspaper the photographer was never credited.
5. The heiress of Juliette Benzoni, her daughter has no idea who took that photo.

Can please someone help me to upload this photo under special conditions as has been mentioned on the Teahouse around the sixth of December? I am looking forward to your help. Thank you very much. I would like to mention that the photo I would love to add on an article I wrote myself here: https://en.wikipedia.org /wiki/Catherine_(1963_novel) yours sincerely Laramie1960 (talk) 19:21, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

Uploading Images Already on Commons

I downloaded an image from Commons which I needed to crop and add to Wikivoyage. I need to upload the cropped image for Wikivoyage, but you're not supposed to upload someone else's content - although the image is Public Domain. Any ideas? SelfieCity (talk) 20:21, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

You can upload any public domain image. Any cropped public image remains in public domain. So, you can upload it without any problem. Only, please, upload it under a different name, not overwrite the initial image. Ruslik (talk) 20:35, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
this link 🔗 might be handy to read, all items derived from the public domain remain in the public domain. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:17, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
@SelfieCity: When you want to crop an image may I suggest using the CropTool that can be enabled in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves a lot of time because it transfers all the appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be reviewed again. When you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you may decide to overwrite the original image but usually and for more major crops you should always upload the cropped version as a separate new image. Before using CropTool, you do need to activate it. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 14:37, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Donald Trung and Ww2censor for your help. SelfieCity (talk) 18:21, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

cropping photos on wikicommons and using in wikipedia article

Hi,

There is an image on Wikicommons with a free license that I needed crop to separate two scientists into smaller portrait images of each for their wikipedia biographies.

Running into problems. Teahouse recommended I crop over here, which I cannot figure out. I have downloaded the image, cropped it and tried to upload the cropped images with all the relevant source and license info from the original image to Wikicommons.

One of my cropped photos was accepted and one wasn't. When I try to upload my cropped images to Wikipedia, I run into problems.

What is the simplest way for me to do this? I see myself doing this again as I create biographies of women scientists on Wikipedia as part of the Wiki Women in Red Project.

A CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF SALEM COUNTY, NEW JERSEY

Dear Sirs; I have a 26 page file with dates and items that happened in Salem County, NJ that I would like to share with Wikipedia. It is in a MS Word format. How can I share this with you?

Paul L. Reed Deputy County Clerk Salem County, New Jersey

Hi Mr. Reed, Can you convert it to a PDF?

Artix Kreiger (talk) 21:20, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

I would advise you convert the file to .pdf and then to upload the file 📁 to the internet archive. Then you can upload the file to commons using IAuploader, https://tools.wmflabs.org/ia-upload/ (requires OAuth https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OAuth_Uploader), this way the file is a format that’s fully compatible with Wikimedia Commons as .pdf files are copyrighted and can’t be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Once it's uploaded here you can use it on Wikipedia, though I would advise you to use your files on Wikisource. Website screenshot issued by owner

Hello help desk. This question concerns a screenshot of a data portal serving datasets (under open licenses at it happens although that is not relevant to this question). The website is owned by a limited liability company in France and the site runs (I would imagine) non-free software. Clearly I cannot screenshot the portal myself and upload the image file. But can I ask the data portal to screenshot its own website, add a suitable open license, and send the image file to me for upload? That seems like a good work-around. Or am I missing some crucial legal issue? I have already looked here and here. With best wishes. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 22:04, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello Jmabel. Thanks. I was planning on using an OTRS ticket (I should have mentioned that). My question was aimed at the principle, in the case that the site operator holds the copyright to the software running the site. Any other comments? With best wishes. Is the watermark in the middle of this image (main page here) too intrusive to be used on Wikimedia projects? The watermark is minimal and can barely be seen on my cell.-phone 📞, though maybe the watermark itself is copyrighted so I’m asking it here to make sure that I don't accidentally upload a useless picture 📷 of a Qing Dynasty banknote.

I would say that It's "Promotional watermarks, which go significantly beyond asserting authorship/copyright, for example to promote a website" but it's barely visible so I don't know if it could be considered "promotional" at this point, it's not destructive as it doesn't take anything from the image itself away, and a casual looker might not even spot it. The image is of high quality, but I still have the issue of the watermark, Commons:Watermarks states that some watermarks are acceptable but I can't figure out if I'm allowed to upload this specific watermark. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:26, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

If you are talking about the very light gray watermark half way up between the two images on the file, it is certainly not obtrusive and I pretty sure one of the editors on the Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop‎ can retouch it out if you are so worried. It took me quite a while to find and only after I had downloaded it to my computer and enlarged it. There are thousands of watermarked images much more obvious than this one and some should really be retouched out. Ww2censor (talk) 13:31, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Trouble with Crop tool

I frequently use the Croptool here and it just doesn't work with one particular file - File:Handel.jpeg. I have tried for days, logged out, and have no clue why it doesn't work. At the "preview" step, it just hangs with a progress indicator that just goes indefinitely. Since I first had this problem, I have cropped other images with no problem, so whatever is wrong seems to be specific to this file. MB (talk) 03:38, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

@MB: Same symptom for me. What were you trying to crop it to?   — Jeff G. ツ 03:52, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
It doesn't seem to matter. If I "crop" it to the entire photo or any portion thereof it just hangs. MB (talk) 03:55, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

I also cannot use the Croptool at the moment, on any image. I can't get it as far as trying to crop the image. It just hangs in limbo forever, and once flipped to a "Bad Gateway" message. Right now, the Croptool link is not even in the sidebar, so maybe somebody has taken it down to work on it. Maile66 (talk) 01:41, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
I had the same problem earlier (not being able to use the tool at all). It is back working for me now, but I am still unable to crop the one photo discussed above. Seems to be a separate problem. MB (talk) 00:22, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
@MB and Maile66: If you don't see CropTool on the sidebar, you can access it via https://tools.wmflabs.org/croptool/.   — Jeff G. ツ 04:12, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
I have the CropTool on the sidebar. I'm just having the original problem where it hangs when trying to crop File:Handel.jpeg. MB (talk) 05:15, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
My problem I mentioned above was resolved in a couple of days. Either somebody fixed that, or it hiccuped itself back into working. I just did a run-through on trying to crop, and it works fine for me. I will say to anyone who might be using a Firefox browser, 57.0 or 57.02, the latst version of NoScript interferes with the crop tool, making it hang indefinitely. Firefox users need to temporarily disable NoScript in order to use the Crop tool. Maile66 (talk) 22:56, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
I do have Firefox 57.02, but I am able to crop other images. I have also tried cropping this image using IE and have the same problem where the tool just hangs. My problem does not seem to be related to NoScript - I don't even have that extension installed. MB (talk) 21:19, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
@MB: Hmmmm ... I see what you mean. It's exactly as you originally described it. I just tried to crop File:Handel.jpeg It's probably something in the image itself. I can open the Crop tool and resize it. But when I click "Preview", it just hangs indef. Maile66 (talk) 01:09, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

If you look at the history, the image has been cropped in the past to extract the other person. Maybe I'll try to use a different tool on my own computer, but the one here is so convenient. MB (talk) 03:37, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

National Register photographs

I click on a photograph icon on their Hancock County Maine website but the photograph won't open. I must be doing something wrong. Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frederick Biebesheimer (talk • contribs) 21:59, 25 December 2017

You need to tell us what image you are trying to open, so please provide a link. If this is an issue with an external website you will have to ask them. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 22:42, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Can I upload this image?

https://images.bjorn3d.com/Material/Images/362_lit-224010.gif It's an older (early 90s) advertisement for a peripheral drive device. Namely, it would be for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Solutions_Backpack this article. Note that https://www.bjorn3d.com/2003/10/microsolutions-backpack-external-dvd%c2%b1rw-drive/ this is the article where I originally found the image. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTechnician27 (talk • contribs) 03:57, 26 December 2017‎ (UTC)

@TheTechnician27: No, that page is "Bjorn3d.com (c) 1996-2017." Almost everything on the Internet is still copyrighted and thus not acceptable here.   — Jeff G. ツ ping or talk 04:13, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

I can not figure out how to write a page

To whom it may concern,

I have looked over your site for a few days and to no avail I can not figure out how or where do I start making a page. Do you have a step by step instructions or someone i could hire to do so? I have checked and the page I want to write does not exist. The page would be on a person James B Levesque. Any help in this matter would be appreciated — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tertymes (talk • contribs)

contact author

I have submitted a manuscript to a publisher. It contains two images obtained from Wikipedia Commons. The publisher said they do not accept the Wikipedia statement that material is public domain. How do I contact the author to obtain their permission?

Thanks Unity 7. —Preceding undated comment was added at 15:27, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

@Unity 7: What images?   — Jeff G. ツ ping or talk 16:01, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
2 clarifications:
  1. It's "Wikimedia Commons", not "Wikipedia Commons".
  2. The reason Jeff asked "What images" is that the answer will be different for different images.

Samsung Health app icon

Hello, what license should I mark the Samsung Health Mobile app icon?

I want to use this file (similar to the Bixby app icon) to identify the application in the future Samsung Health article I'm creating in my own sandbox in Czech Wikipedia.

Well, if it's copyrighted you could better upload it locally under "fair use" as Wikimedia Commons doesn't accept non-free files while many Wikipedia's do, I'm not sure about Czech Wikipedia, but you could better ask locally if it's possible. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:40, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

Misidentified airplane in photo

I am referring to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fokker_Dr._I_USAF.jpg. This Fokker Triplane has the exact serial number and paint scheme as the one that belonged to Arthur Rahn. If it is not Rahn's aircraft, then it is a pretty exact copy. I believe two facts should be clarified: Is it Rahn's plane? Or is it a replica, probably by the USAF? The present info is so confusing it may make readers believe the U.S. once flew these German fighters.Georgejdorner (talk) 09:14, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

.pdf converter doesn't seem to work

Some time ago I had attempted to upload two (2) files from the Internet Archive which I had published there to be uploaded here to Wikimedia Commons so I could use them for Wikisource. The files were admittedly wrongly rotated and I had hoped that I could fix them here in Wikimedia Commons but unfortunately they don't seem to have been successfully uploaded. I will link the files 📁 below, but as my browser keeps force reloading I have to write ✍🏻 this in two go's, so don't reply immediately. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:34, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

Upload time limit

I tried using the Wikimedia Commons upload wizard and after attempting to upload a file 📁 a few times it kept saying that the file can't be uploaded without giving me any reason, after I tried uploading using the old form it gave the message "Upload error As an anti-abuse measure, you are limited from performing this action too many times in a short space of time, and you have exceeded this limit. Please try again in a few minutes." But it didn't specify a time, why doesn't the regular UploadWizard give this warning, and why doesn't it specify how long to wait? This seems like a technical limitation that should get fixed, note that the maximum upload rate limit is 380 images regardless of the upload method. (maybe this is better a village pump post). --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:07, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Using cat-a-lot on pages of uncategorized images

Hello,

Every time I try to use cat-a-lot on pages of uncategorized images, I get the following message: "The following (16 or whatever) pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found: (then it lists the images I picked".

I can use cat-a-lot in situations when images are already categorized. But not if they are in "Category:Media needing categories as of 28 December 2017" for example.

I see that others are able to do it. What is the secret for success? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 18:18, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

This was already discussed at Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2017/09#Help_with_Gadget_Cat-a-Move. Ruslik (talk) 20:19, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
Ruslik, that answer works for moving one file at a time. I tried moving 14 files at once using cat-a-lot today from Category:Media needing categories as of 28 December 2017 to a category that exists and got that error message as above. This happens every time I try it. Does cat-a-lot work for moving more than one file if they are uncategorized? (Sorry to bother you again. It just is so much harder doing those one by one) Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 22:54, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
p.s. Otherwise, I have no trouble with cat-a-lot. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 22:55, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
I checked and it indeed does not work. You should probably raise this issue on MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js. Ruslik (talk) 17:46, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi Guys,

I have one doubt if the a person had given is own work with the permission to use the Photo, then we have uploaded still it has been saying that there is a copyright issue. Please let me know how to go about this.

Can I Upload This Image To commons.wikimedia.org ?

In Chinese Wikipedia w:zh:WP:IRC, a user suggest that I could upload this file to Commons Wikimedia.

but that photo contain a Rem doll which is a character in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
so I'm not sure , It's possible upload this file to Commons Wikimedia? -- ·歡迎簽到·14:18, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
This is Commons:De minimis - the doll is barely recognizable. Ruslik (talk) 14:43, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
Which is to say yes, you can upload it. - Jmabel ! talk 18:13, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
@Ruslik0 and Jmabel: Like this? with template template:De minimis -- ·歡迎簽到·)2017年12月31日 (日) 19:06, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
OTOH that the image is solely categorized according to the doll would seem to militate against the de minimis assertion by drawing attention to that feature. Probably better to put somewhere under Chinese Wikipedia.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:50, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Video Uploading Issue (Wiki Science Photo Competition 2017)

Hi there, I'm trying to upload my video for the Wiki Science Competition 2017 (for the multimedia category) but the upload keeps on failing. The video file is an .ogg and I have tried also with a .webm. At the end of the upload this error appears: "This action has been automatically identified as harmful and has been disabled. You may press "Save page" again if you believe your edit to be constructive. In case you aren't sure if your edit is constructive, it's best to ask for help, either on the [[::Badtitle/ApiErrorFormatter::getDummyTitle|talk page]] or on the help desk. In case you were actually making an acceptable contribution, please report this error here. Thank you"

I have clicked on "Upload anyway" but it has failed again.

Thank you very much

@MatteoGelardi1957: Sorry, such video uploads are not allowed via WP0 (Wikipedia Zero) due to abuse by people pirating copyrighted content in them. Can you try via a metered service or wait four days until your account is Autoconfirmed?   — Jeff G. ツ 00:57, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Unfortunately the submission has to be done by the 15th of December. What do you mean by "metered service"? Thank you again. Matteo 13:13, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Jeff i am trying to help, but I don't get the Wikipedia zero part, if he is Italian. In any case, I will request the right for him directly, if the registration is not old enough to reach Autoconfirmed in the next 54 hours. --Alexmar983 (talk) 15:19, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
@MatteoGelardi1957: If you're in a hurry, you could try requesting the "Confirmed" right on COM:RFR. I don't know if that will solve the problem, since the abuse filter in question is secret, but it won't hurt to try. --bjh21 (talk) 15:21, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
(conflicted)I am drafting such request. here it looks is a matter of hour bjh21. So maybe he can simply try tomorrow. I'll ask him in italian in my talk.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:28, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
@MatteoGelardi1957: Internet service that is not Wikipedia Zero, or that is metered in money per gigabyte or fraction thereof.   — Jeff G. ツ 15:24, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I think we should assume good faith with a request like this, so I marked the account confirmed. Guanaco (talk) 16:02, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

@Guanaco: Thanks, I was on the fence because the account didn't technically qualify.   — Jeff G. ツ 21:41, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you Guanaco, rumor has it that on a Wikimedia facebook page in Italy someone else reported a similar problem. I cannot access Facebook but I will call you again in that case. Since we have two weeks of upload still to go from Africa, maybe we need to make a post about that with clear instructions in French and English on the website about how to request the flag (or simply to wait at least four days), we'll see. I am surprised they did not report it from other countries in the competition.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:07, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
@Alexmar983: Unfortunately the abusers were using sleeper accounts to wait out the four days, so the filter requires much more than autoconfirmed. They'll have to request these permissions by talking to an admin or posting at COM:RFR. Guanaco (talk) 14:22, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you in any case for your fast support Guanaco. I am surprised noone told us anything from other countries. The new user who was blocked has an interesting video, so it is really worth the temporary flag.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:31, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
