Where's the old upload form?

This was the old upload form.

What happened to the old upload form? It was perfect. I loved going line-by-line with info. Now it asks me to cut and paste the template into the "Summary" box. When did this change and is there a way to change it back? -- Veggies (talk) 01:57, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

It sounds like you're looking at the basic upload form. You're looking for Special:Upload. If those pages look the same, activate the Improved Upload Form gadget and try the latter one again. LX (talk, contribs) 07:44, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

I recently changed the signature of Mexican politician Javier Duarte de Ochoa. Map of South-West England Needed Please

Hi - I am currently updating English club rugby union on Wikipedia. I like to create pages with a map for each league showing the team locations. Currently there are a number of regional maps of England but nothing for the south west of the country - the nearest available is of England south (File:England south location map.svg). I am not sure how to modify the England south map to create a south-west version and would appreciate it if someone could help me with this. Ideally the map would extend from Cornwall in the West as far as Berkshire to the east and would help make the regional league maps less cluttered and clearer. Thanks. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 08:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Jgjsmith006: Why not make a request at the Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop? Ww2censor (talk) 15:12, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Thanks guys. Will give both suggestions a go and get back to you. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 20:35, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Jgjsmith006: The south-west is shown by File:South West England districts 2011 map.svg. However, it sounds like you need a slightly broader region for Rugby than is used for government? What counties are included in the SW for rugby purposes (and other parts of UK for that matter!)--Nilfanion (talk) 20:46, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Nilfanion - someone at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop suggested the very same map. The map is very good and covers the right area but ideally it would not have the county boundaries - regional are not such an issue - as this can interfere with map location text. In terms of counties covered by the south it is typically Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Dorset and Wiltshire but due to level transfers between regions caused by imbalance of teams, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and even Midlands counties such as West Midlands, Worcestershire and Warwickshire can be included from time to time. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 14:10, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Replied further at the Graphics Lab (as more appropriate venue).--Nilfanion (talk) 08:02, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Uploading Election Results Maps

Hello,

I have been creating numerous maps of historical election results. I have used them for my own personal education and they are all based on templates currently used on Wikipedia. I was hoping I could upload some to help others understand history in this same way.

Are these uploads fair use? Can I claim that they are original content even though they are based on map templates that I downloaded from Wikipedia? All I did was change the colors of the various political regions (counties, states, etc.). — Preceding unsigned comment added by -A-M-B-1996- (talk • contribs) 17:39, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

@-A-M-B-1996-: Show me the files on Wikipedia. They will either be CC licensed, in which case we can put the originals and any derivatives here at Commons. Or they will be fair use on Wikipedia and should stay there and we will probably not make derivatives. My suspicion is that it is the former. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:51, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
@Koavf: I haven't uploaded any of my own yet, but here are the sort of files I am using as templates:

Duplicate image

Hi there. I inadvertently uploaded a near duplicate of the same image. I am the photographer. The image I'd like kept is this one. Is there a way to delete or redirect this one? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:37, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Those are just different enough that normally we'd keep both, and they've been here too long (a couple of months) for a totally routine courtesy deletion. You can always nominate it for deletion & try to get consensus, which you might get. - Jmabel ! talk 22:26, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I uploaded the second image a few hours ago. Could you courtesy delete it? Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 23:03, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
The recent one is the one you said you want kept. Did you change your mind (in which case I can courtesy-delete the recent upload), or is one of us confused? - Jmabel ! talk
@Jmabel: My apology, I should have checked the category before uploading the image. It doesn't really matter which on gets deleted, as they are very similar images. It just looks wonky to have two almost identical images in the category. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:30, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
OK, then I'll do the recent one as a courtesy deletion, but FWIW it's not unusual to have two rather similar images. - Jmabel ! talk 07:51, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

Possible bug in file descriptions

The issue

I was uploading a new version of File:Domestic trips made by Donald Trump in 2017.svg, when I noticed something odd – my comment from today was the only one shown in the file history, while I am completely positive there were comments before. I was wondering if anyone else has the same issue. I have also encountered it on File:List of international presidential trips made by Donald Trump.svg, File:Trump Organization properties worldwide map.svg, File:2016 Presidential Election by County.svg, etc., it seems any svg file that has more than a couple versions in its history. How to OTRS approvement for copyright of image File:Ayesha Khanna.jpg

Hey, I uploaded an image. Please tell me how to approve this image from OTRS. Smokin' Bears (talk) 13:46, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

@Smokin' Bears: If a free license has been sent to OTRS, then the image and template will be evaluated when and if the e-mail is received, processed, and approved. If the e-mail has been properly received there, then the sender should receive an automatic reply with the ticket number. If the sender has not had a reply, please check that it was sent correctly and try again. Note that OTRS, like Commons, is entirely staffed by volunteers, and, also like Commons, is shorthanded, so it may be several weeks or more before the e-mail is processed.   — Jeff G. ツ 14:28, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

  • @ElWaliElAlaoui: I've headed off the speedy deletion and turned it into a discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:El Wali El Alaoui.png. The problem, and it's not a big problem, is that you published this photo earlier on your twitter feed as copyrighted material. Assuming you still have access to that twitter account, this is pretty easily solved. On the same twitter account, send a tweet saying either (1) that the account ElWaliElAlaoui on Commons is you or (2) that the photo in question is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International. Or even tweet both. Then link that tweet from Commons:Deletion requests/File:El Wali El Alaoui.png to clarify the licensing issue.
  • If you don't have access to that twitter account or don't want to tweet about this, there are other solutions, but they are a bit more complicated; just say so. - Jmabel ! talk 16:57, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

COM:CRT#Lebanon shows no copyright exception for Lebanese government works like this. Template:PD-Lebanon only shows exceptions for works that are 'one of "laws, legislative decrees, decrees and decisions issued by all public authorities and official translations thereof"'. {{Cc-zero}} for your own work {{PD-self}} – for works released into the public domain by their creator who is also the uploader.

As you know, one of the most critical parts of the entirety of Wikimedia is the listing of historical roadside markers in Ulster County, New York. I've been working on that. But I've noticed two areas that could use fixing and are beyond my poor skills:

  1. There are categories for both Historical Markers in New York (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Historical_markers_in_New_York) and New York State Historic Markers (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:New_York_State_Historic_Markers). It seems like it would be useful (1.a.) to combine these, (1.b.) maybe even look throughout your categorization for all such markers and unify the designation as either historic or historical, ("historical" seeming to be the big category but it seems that the categories for markers in such-and-such-place the category name is "Historic Markers in Such and Such Place").
  2. Many counties in New York have their own sub-category for their historic(al) markers (for example Albany, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:New_York_State_Historic_Markers_in_Albany_County,_New_York). Despite the fact that we in Ulster are better than those egoists in Albany, we don't have a category for our far superior markers. (2.a.) Could one be created for Ulster County, New York and (2.b.) is there a way to move all of the markers that are in both the category Historic Markers in New York and the category Ulster County, New York to that category?

Thanks. - HighAtop94 (talk) 16:46, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Jmabel, Thank you.

  • I do not think you are correct about that New York State Historic Markers is a subcat of Historical markers in New York (notice how the links to these pages do not show up). I think that New York State Historic Markers should be eliminated in favor of Historical Markers in New York (because that's the format for other states). I don't know how to make that move and new to Wikipedia don't want to make the move (the "be bold" dictum be dammed) but if there is someone we should suggest this to let and you know how to reach her or him, let me know. There was some discussion of the topic here (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:New_York_State_Historic_Markers), if there's a way I can help clear things up let me know.
  • I created the historic markers in Ulster County NY category and have placed the intersect categories template there to let it categorize. To tell the truth, I didn't think I could do this, but I'm letting her rip!

HighAtop94 (talk) 04:32, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

  • No idea what you mean by "notice how the links to these pages do not show up". They show up fine for me.
User:Auntof6, who usually knows what she's doing, gives essentially the same distinction of the categories at Category talk:New York State Historic Markers that I did above. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi, all. Let me see if I can help clarify.

  • There are general categories for historical markers, and there are categories for historical markers for specific heritage registers. (I prefer the term "historical" for the general categories, because "historic marker" sounds like the marker itself is historic -- which they can be, but that's not usually what is meant.)
  • Category:Historical markers in New York is a general category (as are all the subcats of Category:Historical markers in the United States by state): it can include all kinds of historical markers in the state of New York, whether or not they are connected to a specific heritage register, and whether they are at the state, county, city, or other level.
  • Category:New York State Historic Markers is for markers of a specific program called w:New York State Historic Markers (which is why "Historic Markers" is capitalized here). Those markers are in New York, so this category is under the general category for the state. Note that this category uses the term "historic", because that's the name of the program.

Therefore, these categories are currently set up correctly. Hope that helps. Any questions? --Auntof6 (talk) 06:00, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Jmabel, No need to respond to this, but just by way of feedback yesterday when you typed Category:New York State Historic Markers is a subcat of Category:Historical markers in New York, which is... what I saw on my screen is is a subcat of, which is with blanks where category names should be. The category names show up now. I'm pointing this out in case it's a sign of a problem with how Wikipedia works. Good to report bugs and all that. -- HighAtop94 (talk) 13:18, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Auntof6 Thanks for the clarification. Again, this is not something critical to me but I want you to know what I think. I understand your distinction, that Category:New York State Historic Markers is for markers created under the w:New York State Historic Markers program and Category:Historical markers in New York is a general category, which could include markers created under the State program but could also include markers created by others. This is a real distinction. But:

  1. While the State did fund initial markers there is no definitive list of those markers so it is impossible to tell whether a blue and yellow marker was sanctioned by NY State.
  2. Within the category of NY State sanctioned markers you will see lists like markers for Warren County which includes markers seemingly sanctioned by NY State and those seemingly not sanctioned. So if we follow your suggestion we'd have to break up the list of markers in Warren County into two groups (and we'd have no criteria to know for sure whether something should go into the group of officially sanctioned markers).
  3. It is possible that this distinction (if it could be made) between markers approved by NY State and places people thought important enough to warrant a plaque is not so important. What a reader might want to know is simply "what places in this community were worth noting". In fact, based on what I've read about the w:New York State Historic Markers program, it's unclear that the process of selecting sites for markers signified historical importance. Having a marker that was paid for by the State when the program was active did not mean that the site commemorated was more important that sites not commemorated; not having a marker did not mean a site was not important. I suppose you could say that your categorization is important if you think readers are most interested in the question "between 1929 and 1939, what places did people who knew how to the NY State Historical Marker Program want to mark" (a very interesting question, the question that animates me, but maybe not an encyclopedia question) whereas my categorization answers the more general question "what places have people in this community wanted to mark"?

I'm new to Wikipedia and look at me, I've become a crazy person going on about historical markers. This is all in the spirit of working together to make this database better. I'll leave this decision about how to categorize to you, il miglior fabbro, but wanted to share my thoughts. And, if you decide to change things and need help let me know if I can be useful; as you see from what Jmabel showed me, I can do stuff. -- HighAtop94 (talk) 13:20, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@HighAtop94: To address your points:
  1. w:List of New York State Historic Markers links to lists of the markers for each county. I haven't checked to see if those lists are all complete, but it appears that it is known which markers belong to the program.
  2. Let's not confuse the issue by referring to the New York State Historic Markers markers as state sanctioned markers, as if those are the same thing: we don't know if there are "state sanctioned" markers that are not in the specific program. As for breaking up the category for an individual county, how do you know that Category:New York State Historic Markers in Warren County, New York includes something that isn't in the program? When categorizing markers in New York, if one isn't sure whether a marker belongs in the specific program, it is acceptable to put it in the general category. No one is forced to subcategorize if they don't want to or don't have enough information to be able to do it. By the same token, we don't want to undo subcategorization that is already done.
  3. You are correct that having a marker in the specific program doesn't mean that a place is more important than places without such markers. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't have categories for the program, and having such categories doesn't imply anything about importance. People can be interested in what's included in the program for various reasons. This may not be an "encyclopedia question", but this is Commons, not Wikipedia: Commons is not an encyclopedia, but a media repository that is used for things besides Wikipedia.

Template loop detected messages

I am seeing the following text in four places on the Template:Derivative versions page. This does not make sense in the context of the page, and I think it is an error message.

  • Template loop detected: Template:Autotranslate <includeonly></includeonly>

Template:Derivative versions/doc does not show the errors.

The Google search https://www.google.com/search?q=Template+loop+detected+site:commons.wikimedia.org indicates that several other template pages have the same problem. What is causing this? Verbcatcher (talk) 23:46, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

It’s probably in the moment for all templates using {{Autotranslate}} the same, when they are transcluded on their own doc page. I do not know for sure, but assumed recent changes in Module:Fallback are the reason, so I left a message on Jarekt’s talk page. He answered there is a fix on the way, and he would try to debug it if still necessary. — Speravir – 02:04, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for following this up. Verbcatcher (talk) 02:43, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Actually the issue was not with {{Autotranslate}} but with {{Documentation}} which is used by majority of templates. I undid some changes to that template which should not have caused any loops and the issue seems to be fixed. No idea why it showed up and why it diapered. --Jarekt (talk) 03:09, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Erstellen von Kategorien und Unterkategorien

Guten Tag,

There is no one-to-one correspondence for the interwiki links?

The commons category for en:Adhesive label is Category:Adhesive labels 2013 yet, when you inspect the category, it doesn't have interwiki links. There is a button "Add links" under the "in Wikipedia" label (in left side of the window) and if you click it, you can add the category to a Wikipedia article, even though the category is already linked to en:Adhesive label. Why is that happening? Thank you. Fructibus (talk) 23:12, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Fructibus: , the problem should be fixed now. Apparently "Commons category" is just a regular data value, but analogous project pages need to be added to the list of links aswell. Some links are duplicate now, but that seems to be a common problem (no pun intended) - other categories show the same behavior. Better some duplicate than no links I guess :). GermanJoe (talk) 00:25, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Ahh, I understand now, at Wikidata, you can add the Commons link in two places: In the "Statemets" section, where there is no one-to-one correspondence (different Wikipedia articles can point to the same Commons page) and then in the "Other sites" section. I think that "Commons" deserve it's own place in that "Other sites" section, near Wikiboox, Wikinews etc. to reduce confusion. Thanks for your help! Fructibus (talk) 07:52, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

I need help about uploading my very own photo...

Hello Help desk, I have uploaded yesterday evening a photo of mine here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliette_Benzoni which was taken with my own camera. I am the only owner and copyright holder of that photo. The photo is online on this website https://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/English/Books/Juliette_Benzoni/JulietteBenzoni_Meeting.htm since 2009, not in that version, (whoever did the search, did not find all version of it!) The original photo shows three person and in the middle is Juliette Benzoni. For Wikipedia I only needed the middle part and I took the part with the author to upload. That was no problem for me since I got the orignial. On the net we can see different versions of that photo here is another page : https://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/English/Books/Juliette_Benzoni/Juliette_Benzoni.htm - and this one here https://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/English/Overview.htm the photo in the round shape is at the moment not uploaded on that website. But it can still be found on Google. We all know that images do not disappear only because the website owner deletes a photo. Some of photos (there exist at least four other photos from that day) are online with my permission, others had been taken without my permission, but that is not the point now. Can you lease help me so that beautiful photo can stay there and also be uploaded on the English Juliette Benzoni Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliette_Benzoni. I really thought I had added yesterday all that is necessary. The next time I shall not use the Upload Wizard, but come directly for help. I thank you very much for helping me with this issue which is actually none, it is my photo. Best to you and thank you again Laramie1960 (talk) 09:54, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

  • @Laramie1960: It doesn't matter whose camera the photo was taken with. In most circumstances (there are some exceptions, but not many) copyright belongs to the photographer, and must be explicitly transferred for that to change. But I am assuming that is also you, in this case.
  • Given that the photo has been published before, you need to go through the COM:OTRS process. Otherwise, anyone could take any photo that is already out there and claim it was theirs. - Jmabel ! talk 15:09, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

I thought when I come here to the Help desk I get a good and useful information. But I am very frustrated now. How can you write to me "anyone could take any photo that is already out there and claim it was theirs". This is an insult towards me, you are actually saying to me I stole the photo. I gave above all the information to say it was me who took that photo. Maybe I am too stupid to upload one of my very own photos, this I can agree, but this photo of mine was wrongly tagged. Maybe it helps to say that it was ME who uploaded that photo on that website where we see that photo and similar ones ? Maybe someone can take a moment of their precious time and follow all the links I gave above and finally agree that there was made a mistake. No offense, but my frustration is very big now Laramie1960 (talk) 15:56, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Laramie1960,
All accounts here are pseudonymous. Anyone here can create an account called John Smith, and say it is their real name. And actually, we don't care. That's why, we require a formal written permission if a picture was published elsewhere before being uploaded here. Regards, Yann (talk) 18:05, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi Yann, you too assume that I am lying. I asked for help and must read I am a liar, stealing photos on the internet. You too did not take the time to go and check on all I wrote above, otherwise you would now have given me a real good advice. What do you mean you need a formal written permission from me, for my very own photo? Are you making fun of me? Why do you think that little photo was found on the Internet yesterday? Because I have uploaded it myself in 2009 https://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/English/Books/Juliette_Benzoni/JulietteBenzoni_Meeting.htm Next you will tell me I took down my own photo, pretending it was mine. I cannot write here my real name to proof I am right and you know that. I understand that not all people are honest, but in my case you and your friends here are wrong. Mistakes can be made. I am terribly upset about all this and were it not for that person on that photo who is dead since last year, I would not care, but I do. Best Regards Laramie1960 (talk) 19:13, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Laramie1960, I don't assume anything. I only explain how we work here. You may be right, but how do we know? Regards, Yann (talk) 19:37, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

I understand now that this is the way the Help desk works. You know I am right, IF you followed my link, so please no more assuming I am wrong. Why is no one showing me step by step how to upload a photo, an article or a poster? I had been warned to upload photos, but always believing in the good of people I thought I will not be let down and get help here. I am sure you understand my surprise that me, that I copyright holder should now go and proof the photo is mine. Regards Laramie1960 (talk) 10:34, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

@Laramie1960: no one assumes that you are lying, but I do assume that Laramie1960 isn't your legal name, and that it would be inappropriate for me to ask you to publicly tie your legal name to your wiki account. (I personally choose to do so with mine, but most participants don't.) That's a large part of why we have the OTRS system: so these things can by handled in a less public manner. - Jmabel ! talk 22:22, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello Jmabel. You assume right, Laramie1960 is not my real name. When I opened the account in 2008 I followed the recommendations to use a Pen name and that I did. All I can say now is, it must have been my mistake how I uploaded that photo in the first place. I had done it manually at first, added all that was necessary and when I clicked enter it suggested to me to use the WIZARD for that. I noticed at first sight that it was different and I was not able to add all the information as before. I am not a professinal, I do understand a bit of computer technic, but it seems that it is above my intelligence to upload a photo on Wikimedia Commens without getting tagged. So we are at the beginning of my question: "How to upload a photo on Wikimedia Commens which belongs to the copyright holder, without having a photo tagged"? Because now I know, however I do it, my photos get tagged. How was I to know that I get in trouble for a photo (mine) which was uploaded in 2009, (the size of a pin, created by me) would bring me all that trouble. I am frustrated you can believe me. Have a nice Weekend, best Laramie1960 (talk) 10:34, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

  • You haven't done anything wrong, and you are not "in trouble." However, apparently the photo was previously published with all rights reserved (or with an insufficiently free license), so we need you to go through the OTRS process so that we have a formal record of your intent to change that. Yes, I personally would prefer if the present discussion here would suffice, but if we had to handle several dozen (or several hundred) special cases, things would get out of hand very quickly. You asked what you need to do. I answered. That's how help desk works. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

interwiki link to a file on the Commons

On a User's talk page in the Zulu WP, I can't get the syntax right to link to a certain file page here for editing purposes (not to display the image there). Kindly give me the proper format; I know I've done this before and don't understand what I'm messing up. -- Deborahjay (talk) 20:32, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Deborahjay: , [[:Commons:File:St Francis College Mariannhill.jpeg]] should work, if you want to link directly to the Commons file (tested on en-Wiki). GermanJoe (talk) 20:40, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, GJoe, that's exactly what I need. I suspect it's case sensitive and I wasn't being consistent. I appreciate the speedy resolution! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 20:43, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Back again - it's just not working - takes me to the Commons but acts as though the file doesn't exist - then by pasting it into the Search field, it appears as if a possibility, though I'm just copy/pasting the name! Perhaps I'm overlooking something? -- Deborahjay (talk) 20:59, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

The link should take you to [2] and display the image (it does for me on my en-Wiki user talkpage). But I just noticed, that the file is newly uploaded - so it might not be cached everywhere. In occasional cases caching may have a delay of some hours or even 1-2 days if you get really unlucky. Maybe just wait a bit to see if the problem fixes itself, this kind of access error often does. Can I upload a Honduran 2001 campaign poster image to commons?

I would like to upload to Commons a circa 2001 campaign poster-image for addition to the "Raphael Pineda Ponce" (en, es, possibly ru language versions) article. The image was handed to me on a campaign CD at least 12 years ago by the subject's brother (Juan Raphael Pineda), who today (10 Sept 2017) describes it as followsː "This was a poster and really does not belong to anyone in particular; it was created by the campaign committee of unknown author, and has no ownership or copyright attached to it."

I feel that there is historical value to expose it in the article. My question is, are there any issues with uploading this image or recommendation on how I should document such upload to Wikipedia Commons as being in the public domain?

Original image is TIFF (w888 x h3456 px, 300 dpi) single color red text with stripes on white background that reads, "=Pineda Ponce= Presidente 2002-2006." I have also created a JPG version. --Catrachos (talk) 20:39, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Sorry, he's wrong about having no copyrights attached. Under the Berne Convention, copyright exists automatically. If the person who created it did not explicitly transfer or waive rights, and if no one now knows who created it, it's an "orphaned" work, which is really unfortunate, because there is no legal way to obtain rights (beyond fair use rights, etc., which we don't accept as a basis to host an image on Commons). So there is no way we can accept such an image. - Jmabel ! talk 06:03, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Copyright exists automatically, for works that reach the threshold of originality. If the image consists only of simple text and simple geometric shapes, {{PD-ineligible}} applies. Whether or not that applies here might depend on how simple or original those "stripes on white background" are. LX (talk, contribs) 14:10, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

I have a photo of the urbanistic project of this town that was planned by my grandfather, who has already passed away. • "the website does not accept its upload" is vague. Were you using the Upload Wizard, or something else? What error message did you get at what point in the process?
  • If you are, indeed, the heir to the intellectual property, the right way to license it is to use one of the tags from Category:License tags for transferred copyright. For example, if you want to grant a CC-BY-SA license (the most restrictive of the choices, retaining as many of your rights as we allow), you could use {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 19:34, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Jmabel: When people report these sorts of problems, it's a good idea to check their filter log. There's a link to it at the top of the contributions page.
Ada: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload interface that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. Unfortunately, because of the number of copyright violations, the filter has had to be defined quite broadly, meaning it sometimes stops uploads that aren't copyright violations. And unfortunately, instead of getting rid of the flawed upload interface and directing users here to Commons (which the overwhelming majority of volunteers here would prefer), the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that leading users down this blind alley is a good idea.
You should be able to upload the file directly here at Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 20:50, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Dear Yann,

Thank you for your reply.
Please find my understanding about the copyright below and let me know whether it is correct.
From the location of the IAEA - it is Vienna, Austria below

Fixed and dewikified template embedding above. You cannot use this template, because the IAEA is not an authority of Austria, not to say of the Austrian government. But Yann asked for this case in Commons:Village pump/Copyright#US-NK join agreement in IAEA. I think we can close here. — Speravir – 20:45, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Questions on the Saegisser family name

I am looking for information on an ancestors of mine - Hans and Benedicht Saegisser. I want to confirm where and when they were both born. Using an uploaded Commons image across multiple pages?

Hi I am trying to use an image of Vadim Yusov from the Russian Wiki and use it for the English wiki, but i cannot figure out or find an explanation of how to use an existing uploaded image.

If you could direct me i would appreciate it.

Thanks for your time!

You need first to upload it to Commons (here) if it is under a free licence. Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
  • If it is an image on the Russian-language Wikipedia as such, then you can't access it outside of the Russian-language Wikipedia. If it's on Commons, then it should be usable like any other image on Commons.
  • If you mean ru:Файл:Vadim Yusov.jpg, that is in the Russian-language Wikipedia on a non-free basis. It could presumably be uploaded to the English-language Wikipedia on a similar basis, but would not be acceptable on Commons, where we accept only public-domain and free-licensed content. - Jmabel ! talk 20:24, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

Alternatively, since the group clearly intended to release the content under some Creative Commons licence, you could ask them to update their Web site to specify which one. You could helpfully suggest one that would allow uploading to Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 21:40, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

How do I delete an image that I uploaded? I would like to remove two of my images from the commons. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZeeZen (talk • contribs) 02:20, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

@ZeeZen: Given that they are recent uploads, and presuming they are not used in articles, you can just tag them with {{Speedydelete |accidental upload, uploader requests removal}}. However, be aware that this is done on a grace/courtesy basis: licenses are irrevocable, and if you don't do this within a few days of upload, you have to go through the same deletion request process as anyone else would. - Jmabel ! talk 15:01, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

@Chyah: If they are recent uploads (within a day or two) and not used in articles, you can just tag them with {{Speedydelete |accidental upload, uploader requests removal}}. Otherwise, you can go through the same deletion request process as anyone else would. No problem that the uploader and nominator are the same person. - Jmabel ! talk 15:01, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
@EugeneZelenko: the reason is personal, i don't wanna any user every while comes and nominate one/few of my pictures for deletion bcz of "used in other websites"(naturally there is many websites who are thirsty of Commons to use our pictures just after uploading, at least in my region) . @Jmabel: there is many other personal reason: a user get tired of uploading while she live in a country that creative commons looks so strange, a user get tired of everything based on "policies" and ppl even don't thank you here, a female user who always see "Nudity or partial nudity " in every category, and a user who can not talk english well as a native and the others just "Order" her and no one helps her while she is here for 7 years .... . btw, i thank you for that template. currently there is 41,609,705 freely usable files on commons, at least 1,000 of them are my own pictures uploaded here. after 7 year activity, i feel most wikimedia projects are not friendly, looks like NYC. yea, this is not a social media, but we are humans not bots, we have feels we have own interests we should be "friendly". Sometimes i love but many times i see these projects of wikimedia are not good place to spend my time.--Chyah (talk) 21:55, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
how can you be in a website with hundred of rules? i have no problem with rules, i just hate users who are just talking to me about rules like police officers and old judges. i am really tired of this "ordering". i have not seen any wikilove thing in my talk page, just i see about deletion. most of them are, yea, fairly to delete, but i am talking about a "feel", i always "feel my OWN pictures someday will be deleted here" just bcz used in other websites, and i can't defend myself here, cz i am just into uploading and categoris. --Chyah (talk) 22:03, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

Uploading photos from the European Commission Audio-Visual Portal

Dear all,

selected pictures from the EC AV Portal could be used to improve EU related articles on Wikipedia.

My question would be if the Copyright on these pictures is suitable for usage on Wikipedia and if not, what steps need to be taken to make selected pictures available?

Link to the portal's copyright notice: https://ec.europa.eu/info/legal-notice_en#copyright-notice

The Commission decision on the reuse of Commission documents states as the General principle that "All documents shall be available for reuse: (a) for commercial or non-commercial purposes" (pdf) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Meningo (talk • contribs) 09:29, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Still, it also says, "The general principle of reuse can be subject to conditions which may be specified in individual copyright notices. Therefore, users are advised to refer to the copyright notices on individual websites maintained under Europa and in individual documents." So we'd need to be careful with any use of these. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

Need a license review

So a few weeks ago, I uploaded some images. I used the license review tag because I had previously uploaded images that were in the CC, and the person would either pull the file entirely, or remove the CC license. At that point I would have had no proof of their being in the creative commons ever.

Anyway, I put these files in the license review over two weeks ago, and an admin/reviewer still hasn't looked at them. What can I do about this? TBMNY (talk) 17:55, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

All images on Wikimedia Commons are intended to be free for anyone to use, even commercially. Each file has a license on its description page, in this case File:Tanzania National Main Stadium Aerial.jpg. From there you can see the terms and conditions. This one uses CC BY-SA 4.0. You will want to give credit to the author, Raidarmax, and name the license. I recommend also including a footnote or citation with a link back to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tanzania_National_Main_Stadium_Aerial.jpg so others can find the full license text and reuse the image if they see it in your book. Window type

which type is it?

hi, I need some help to find the correct english term for a type of a window. It's called Kreuzstockfenster in german and Fenêtre à croisée in french. Translations called it crossbar window but it seems not to be a specific term for this window. This type is a casement window with a tramsom and a mullion which crosses. Usually you can open all 4 (side-hung) sashs. Sometimes it has glazing bars sometimes not. It's known since 14th-century. --Sjokolade (talk) 10:56, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

@Sjokolade: Since the symbology suggests a cross, how about Category:Cross windows, Category:Cruciform windows, or Category:Crucifix windows? On a side note, do we have a cat for stained glass windows?   — Jeff G. ツ 13:42, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: isn't there a technical term for it? and yes we have Category:Stained glass windows --Sjokolade (talk) 13:51, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
There are many subcategories within Category:Stained glass windows, including ones that show crosses, but I don't see a relevant category within Category:Windows by type where the shape of the window itself forms a cross. The Oxford Dictionary of Architecture (James Stevens Curl & Susan Wilson, 2015, page 212) defines "cross-window" as one with "lights defined by a mullion and transom forming a cross." Jonathunder (talk) 14:23, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Cross window (or Dannebrog window) seems to be pretty well established. LX (talk, contribs) 18:10, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
@Sjokolade, Jonathunder, and LX: There are also cross windows in which the cross is made by, say, 5 square or nearly square panes horizontally crossing 7 panes vertically, or even 3x4 or 3x5. In addition, I saw a crucifix in a 3x4 configuration earlier this week, with each of 6 square metal boxes being the setting for a precious gem. Back to the topic, I prefer "Cross windows" to "Cross-windows".   — Jeff G. ツ 21:56, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Moving a template-driven category

A few days ago, I moved Category:Images from the Geograph Channel Islands project to Category:Images from Geograph Channel Islands. I also updated {{Geograph Channel Islands}}, which puts files into that category. However, almost all of the files with that template still appear in the old category rather than the new one. I made a null edit on one file, which was enough to make it move, but is there a less labour-intensive way to achieve this? This is a bit of a practice run for a similar renaming of Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project, and null-editing all 1.7M files there would be a bit of a hassle. --bjh21 (talk) 21:35, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Purge the template after your edits and wait for the server updating the database. Done this time. — Speravir – 02:18, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
Oh, 149 files actually used the redirect {{Geograph-ci}}. I had to replace it (but probably simply any edit would have updated the database); one file already containing {{Geograph Channel Islands}} needed a null edit, but this count is fair, I think. — Speravir – 02:49, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
@Speravir: How long does it usually take "for the server updating the database"? I assume there's a name for the process that does these template-driven category updates to the Commons database.   — Jeff G. ツ 03:08, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
I cannot tell you. It surely depends on the server usage. This time there was about one file per second processed, but after a minute it stopped (just broad estimations – I refreshed the open category from time to time). — Speravir – 03:14, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I don't think there are redirects pointing to {{Geograph}} or {{Geograph-de}}, so they're a bit simpler. --bjh21 (talk) 09:39, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Helpdesk, I'm trying to upload a picture into a gallery, but I don't know how. Here is the Link to the gallery: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Goats_in_heraldry

Thank you for your help & kindest regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rwecken (talk • contribs) 14:01, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

@Rwecken: Just add the following code (including the brackets) [[Category:Goats in heraldry]] to the bottom of the image page while in edit mode or if you have "Cat-a-lot" activated, from your Preferences -> Gadgets, go to the very bottom of your image page and in the categories section, just hit the + button and add the category name: "Goats in heraldry". BTW, categories are not actually galleries, so you cannot just upload the image into the category alone, you have to upload the image and categorise, which you can also do as you upload it or afterwards as indicated above. Ww2censor (talk) 14:20, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@Rwecken: Let me try to say that more clearly. I assume you don't have "Cat-a-lot" activated, or you probably wouldn't be asking this. Go to the file page for the image in question; I'm guessing from your contribution history that is File:Wappen der Familie Wecken.png. Choose "Edit". At the bottom of the page, add the following code (including the brackets) [[Category:Goats in heraldry]].
That said: is File:Wappen der Familie Wecken.png really your own work? - Jmabel ! talk 19:45, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
Very probably not, but the image looks that old, that I would assume {{PD-old-100-1923}}, and judging from the user name and the given author he is someone of family Wecken. — Speravir – 20:26, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
No problem with that, if there's a source. It was precisely the style that had me doubt "own work". - Jmabel ! talk 22:35, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@Rwecken: Stimmt meine obige Vermutung? — Speravir – 20:26, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Source of an image

Hi. Could you please let me know the way by which you find the original source of an image? I believe a user has breached copyrights of an individual's photo by terming it own work, whereas I can see a similar photo on the personality's facebook account. Moreover, the file has been named press shoot, and I doubt any celebrity would allow such photos to be copyright-free. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. • This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. Wikimedia Commons allows only images that are in the public domain or free-licensed; it is unlikely that a company will grant a free license on a logo that is not in the public domain.
  • Each different Wikipedia (for different languages) has their own policy on non-free content. I'm guessing since you are asking in English, that you are asking about the English-language Wikipedia. You might want to read en:Wikipedia:Logos. - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

I am attempting to post photos for two celebrities. Jann Carl and Rodney Miller, hosts of Small Town Big Deal television show. As long as all the information from English Wikipedia was copied here correctly (it wasn't – most importantly, the licensing information was wrong – but I've fixed that), it's all good. The file won't be deleted from English Wikipedia until all references have been changed to point to the file here on Commons, and now that the file is here on Commons, it can be used on all Wikimedia projects. Help with Gadget Cat-a-Move

Hi,

When I follow the directions, the resulting message is "The following page was skipped, because the old category could not be found: File:Marabá - PA - panoramio (102).jpg". However, the "old category" exists, unless it means the "old category" is "Media needing categories of 14 December 2016" (the page I am on). What am I doing wrong? Help! Is the problem that Cat-a-Move can't be used on Media needing categorization? Thanks! Kalbbes (talk) 14:35, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, I can not find such a gadget. Did you mean Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot? Ruslik (talk) 17:32, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Ruslik, Yes I meant Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot. Sorry for being dumb. Does it not work on "Media needing categorization"? (I've read the directions over a million times.) Kalbbes (talk) 18:06, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Links can be often helpful, here to the file: Marabá - PA - panoramio (102).jpg. I first thought it would be due to the fact that the category is added by a template (cf. source text of file description, you will do not find a category entry [[Category:Media needing categories as of 14 December 2016]], but only {{Uncategorized|year=2016|month=December|day=14|geo=1}}), but according to it’s script source Cat-a-Lot should be able to remove this template, so I’m clueless, too. For other categories assigned by templates is is true, though, that these cannot be removed by Cat-a-Lot. — Speravir – 04:15, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
It indeed does not seem to work now. Ruslik (talk) 17:58, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

I don't see a problem. When I added the Category:Marabá (Pará) cat-a-lot removed the "Media needing categories ..." at once. Am I missing something in your question Kalbbes? Ww2censor (talk) 22:42, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
When I attempted to add this category I got an error. Ruslik (talk) 20:39, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
@Kalbbes, Ww2censor, and Speravir: Ahm* indeed, but this seems normal, if no "common" cat is present the gadget don't removes the problem cat. @Ruslik0: Which cat, which error? -- User: Perhelion 11:45, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
Ruslik, I finally figured out the problem I was having. When I entered the category to move the photos to, I only pushed "Enter" once. Pushing "Enter" twice fixes the problem. Thanks for you help! Best, Kalbbes (talk) 14:32, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Mental Health 011.jpg

I'm writing here because of the template on the image's page.

I'm not able to argue the copyright status of the file I just uploaded. Since published by the United Nations it must be public domain.

--SuperSucker (talk) 08:46, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I'm sure I did indicate the author and the source, as well as ticked the last option "I believe this work is freely licensed or legally in the public domain". What else can I do if I just have no idea of what license is to be linked to the work?? I just didn't know a few hours ago (when I uploaded it), and still I just don't know. I miss a proper grasp of the licensing process. I never uploaded not one file in my life, maybe I did try once but then got lost for such similar reasons: lack of proper understanding of the licensing process. Sorry. SuperSucker (talk) 16:10, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@SuperSucker: You copied this file from http://www.who.int/gho/mental_health/Mental_Health_011.jpg. It is clearly marked "© WHO 2017. All rights reserved." in the bottom right corner. If that wasn't enough, the restrictions on http://www.who.int/about/licensing/en/ make it not free enough for us to keep here, therefore it must go.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:33, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
Please both bear with me for a few seconds.
1) I'm reading from the given link that "Extracts of WHO information can be used for private study or for educational purposes without permission."
And I believe an Encyclopedia does fall under "educational purposes"
2) I also read "Extracts of the information in the web site may be reviewed, reproduced or translated for research or private study but not for sale or for use in conjunction with commercial purposes"
And I suppose there's no inherent "commercial purpose" in Wikipedia, and suspect an Encyclopedia does fall under "research"
So I just keep on wondering what to do at this point. Thanks. SuperSucker (talk) 17:03, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
Then I also read that "Many websites are silent on copyright issues, but images on those sites are just as off-limits as those on sites which explicitly say "Copyright, all rights reserved". Works are copyrighted by default; a copyright notice or a © sign is not needed."
So I guess the Copyright mark shouldn't be the point in case. However, I then read at the United Nations Map template (made for derivatives of UN maps) that "Unless stated otherwise, UN maps are to be considered in the public domain." and "Some UN maps have special copyrights, as indicated on the map itself."
So, since the notice of copyright on this map has nothing special (does it?), I guess public domain may very well apply. My actual problem is that I don't know the tag to be used (there're too many), and I would like some help with that in case deletion is not going through. Many thanks for your patience. SuperSucker (talk) 18:03, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
"Extracts of WHO information can be used for private study or for educational purposes without permission" might be relevant in a case for "fair use" on Wikipedia, but they it's not relevant to Commons at all. In particular, Commons requires that files be freely usable for commercial use (although we make an exception for non-copyright issues such as personality rights or trademarks). This isn't because Commons itself is commercial use, but because the decision was made to host only files that are that freely reusable. Which is to say, it wouldn't be illegal for us to host this file, just against policy. - Jmabel ! talk 19:39, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
I did understand the problem (and also why it has been deleted about 12 hours ago): it can't be licensed for Commons since WHO does not grant use for commercial purposes without some form of explicit permission. I also do understand the mention about the copyright mark which I suppose can never be accepted. I guess. I had mentioned on the talk page (which is now deleted) that I was unsure about the "commercial attributes". The licensing process is such a difficult field, thanks. Commercial use of Images hosted on Wikimedia Commons

Hi there,

I would like to check if I would be able to commercially use images that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons. I'm looking to use the digital images from Wikimedia Commons to print and sell in India.

Is there any restrictions for this? e.g Images from Google Art project, Images released by nationalmuseum.se

Help on this would be very much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.88.208.40 (talk) 04:32, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Every picture on Commons should be eligible in copyright terms for commercial use. Some might have personality rights issues: I have no idea of Indian personality rights law. Specific requirements for reuse vary: see the licenses on the individual file pages. Obviously, if an image is in the public domain you can do anything you want, but a lot of the images do require attribution to the photographer and explicit indication of the license under which it is used. See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia for more details. - Jmabel ! talk 04:55, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
    • Which ignores all the problems with FOP and "rule of the shorter term" and PD-Art in Indian law. I don't know Indian law on the subject, but if India doesn't have the "rule of the shorter term" or treats photographs of paintings as having a separate copyright from the painting, then they might have a problem with certain images.--Prosfilaes (talk) 08:33, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Upload wizard requires a date

Hi- I am trying to upload an illustration for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers, so I believe it is in the public domain. However, I cannot find any date for it. The Wikimedia Commons requires a date, and will not accept anything like "Date Unknown." What do I need to do to use this image on a Wikipedia page. The image url is http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/portals/50/siteimages/MKARNS%20Elevmap.png

The elevations shown on this image make it more useful than the map already available on Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_McClellan–Kerr_Arkansas_River_Navigation_System.jpg), so I want to substitute the image already shown on McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. Thanks, Bruin2 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bruin2 (talk • contribs) 13:52, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

@Bruin2: I found the source page for your image and the 2nd image on that page http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/Lock-Dewatering/ shows a date of 21 December 1994 which is probably as good as you are going to find, and considering all the official government works are in the public domain the date is rather academic IMHO. How to Upload my Game Theme Cover Picture?

Hello everyone, I`m one of the developer of a small game called "My Little Blacksmith Shop" i was just writing an article so that more people can check it out and understand what it is and so on... Now i can`t Upload my Original Cover Picture that the Developer Team originally took and edited (Yes we are the owners and have all the copyrights) now whenever i try to upload it. it clearly says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons." but when u click either link it explains the terms and give a lil details about wikipedia commons stuff. I just want to upload something that i made that`s it. please help out (BTW I even read this lil tutorial over here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Licensing_tutorial_en.svg) the pic i wanna upload is this http://i65.tinypic.com/314qhph.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrManviFTAI (talk • contribs) 19:27, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

  • @MrManviFTAI: Are you saying you were writing an article in Wikipedia about a game you developed? How does that fit with w:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest?
  • As for Commons: if you want to upload an image of something that has been previously published (and, clearly, any images from your game are something you have already published) and where the prior publication was not under the same free license, then you need to go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. Otherwise, we'd have no way to know whether the upload came from the copyright holder or someone else entirely.
  • I don't see any deleted uploads from this account here on Commons. I am guessing from the message you gave that you were uploading with the Upload Wizard. I don't know ever use that, so I'm not sure under what circumstances it gives this message. Could someone who knows the Upload Wizard better please help answer that part of the question. - Jmabel ! talk 01:05, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Meghan_Markle%27s_great_great_great_grandmother,_Mary_Bird_-_a_member_of_staff_of_the_Royal_Household_at_Windsor_Castle_in_the_1850s.jpg

this file's name is still incorrect - my mistake sorry. Please fix again.

The above caption on the file should read - "Meghan Markle's great great grandmother Mary Merrill (née Bird) whose mother - Mary Bird - was a_member_of_staff_of_the_Royal_Household_at_Windsor_Castle_in_the_1850s"

Please help, thanks. 101.182.59.101 12:17, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Main title is still wrong; PLEASE help

This file's formal name is wrong. - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Meghan_Markle%27s_great_great_grandmother,_Mary_Bird_-_a_member_of_staff_of_the_Royal_Household_at_Windsor_Castle_in_the_1850s.jpg

The woman in the picture is Mary Merrill (née Bird) - born in 1862.

She was NOT - as the main title still says - "a member of the staff of the Royal Household at Windsor Castle in the 1850s."

Her MOTHER, Mary Bird, was "a member of the staff of the Royal Household at Windsor Castle in the 1850s".

The correct title should be changed to: "Meghan Markle's great great grandmother, Mary Merrill (née Bird), 1862-1925.

Please, please fix up the Main caption. Thanks so much 101.182.59.101 21:44, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

do you have any proof of that? Artix Kreiger (talk) 23:48, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I have proof. Yes - I made the mistake which I made as editor "Srbernadette", when I set up the file. The UK Daily Mail article which is the "source" clearly states that Mary Bird was working at Windsor Castle in the 1850s. Her daughter Mary Merrill (nee Bird) - the one in the photo was born in 1862. The article explains this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4913756/Meghan-Markle-s-ancestor-royal-maid-Windsor.html

The photo of Mary Merrill (nee Bird) also appears in a family website: http://www.gamblinfamily.org/fay/park_files/hattie_merrill.html#HATTIE_E.14_MERRILL

I am sorry I made the mistake initially. Please fix the main title of the file.

The correct title should be changed to: "Meghan Markle's great great grandmother, Mary Merrill (née Bird), 1862-1925.

Thanks 101.182.59.101 23:57, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

please correct the main title of this page. It's a photo of a woman who was never, ever working at Windsor Castle. Her mother did work at Windsor Castle, but the woman in the photo never did. The woman in the photo is the great great grandmother of Meghan Markle. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2001:8003:4F57:7700:EDBB:7238:6689:2399 (talk) 02:56, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, I have now logged in. Sorry for the confusion - I am not great at this and often upload a file before I have all the facts. Which is what happened last night!

Please understand that Yann was very helpful, and changed a file's formal name BEFORE I myself had double checked the FACTS.

This photo/file is of a woman who CANNOT have worked at Windsor Castle in 1856. She was born in 1862!!! The file's formal title and description are totally different. Please read the UK Express article - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4913756/Meghan-Markle-s-ancestor-royal-maid-Windsor.html.

You will see the photo in the article - the caption underneath the photo makes it clear that this is NOT Meghan Markle's grt grt grt grandmother. The photo is of Markle's Great Great grandmother - this photo is also in the family web-site that I listed to you in a previous post and her name is Mary Bird Merrill, Bird being her maiden name (i.e., before she was married).

I will now contact Yann and hope that the two of you can discuss the problem I created, check the facts and then fix up my mistake!!!

Meghan Markle's Wikipedia page is enormously popular and we must get the file name correct.

Hello Srbernadette, please be cool (and so you don't need to correct yourself 30 times). That's the reason why filenames should not have that much detailed information in it, long filenames are hilarious and to omit. I'll rename it (hopefully finally). -- User: Perhelion 08:08, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
If I understand you right, the "current" file description here and in Wikipedia is wrong (which can corrected by yourself). Until this is not clarified, I don't see me in the position to fix the filename. -- User: Perhelion 08:19, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
The current description of the file is correct. The current file name is totally incorrect. I mucked up!! Please fix up the incorrect file name to match the current correct description name. Both names need to be the same. An ordinary editor cannot alter a file name, only a description.

Please, in the future:
  • If you make a mistake in filename at time of upload, try at least to get it right before you ask other people to take time to make a change!
  • When you request a change like this, be logged in so that we can see that the person requesting the change is the same person as the uploader.
  • For uncontroversial name changes -- and this would presumably have been uncontroversial if it was clear that the requester was the uploader -- you can just use {{Rename}} on the file page of the image in question. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Wrong author, wrong source, wrong licence

What to do with files like Retrato de Axel Dennis G. Schroeder.png where basically everything was wrongly attributed? I asked here the uploader, but should they also be tagged? But which one should we select? {{Copyvio}} or all of {{No source since}}, {{No permission since}} and {{No license since}}? My problem is: Technically, there are author, source and licence given, though very probably wrong. — Speravir – 17:12, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

  • If you are sure it is a copyvio, use {{Copyvio}}, because then the rest is moot.
  • If you think it is significantly likely to be a copyvio, but aren't sure, nominate it for deletion review and explain the issues there. That gives others time to sort it out.
  • If you don't think it is significantly likely to be a copyvio, but it has multiple issues, there is nothing to prevent using multiple tags. And an implausible source is "no source". - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Unknown or special copyright status

Dear Sir/ Madam: I would like to upload two photos to be available in all Wikipedia languages, but I cannot find their appropriate copyright status as per Wikipedia procedure. The photos are scanned pages of a book published in 1987 in Iran, for which I have also written captions. I am going to use them in appropriate Wikipedia entries as examples of respectively “censorship” and “Iran-Israel relations”. Given the nature of my subjects, the Iranian publisher of the book is not likely to engage itself in anyway in a matter that is regarded sensitive, nor will it be safe that I contact any Iranian entity in this respect. I seek your assistance on how to proceed in a smooth manner and have the photos uploaded. Wikieditjust — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikieditjust (talk • contribs) 13:22, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

We cannot accept images as free solely because you think the publisher will not care if you use them or because it is difficult/impossible to ask them for permission. The closest I can envision is {{PD-Iran}}, but it sounds like this specific publication is not old enough yet. DMacks (talk) 14:00, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Another Cat-a-lot questio

Hi,

I've now successfully used Cat-a-lot many times. But every now and then I have the following problem: What does it mean when the error message is a version of "The following 10 pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found: (list of files I was trying to categorize). This has happened to me several times. The "skipped" files are clearly in an "uncategorized" list for a specific day (newly refreshed). The category I want to move them to clearly exists. Yet I get this message over and over in certain cases. If I categorize the same "skipped" files one by one I have no trouble. What could I be doing wrong? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 19:44, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

It is probably related to #Help_with_Gadget_Cat-a-Move above. Ruslik (talk) 20:15, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Possible issue

Hi - I was asked to bring this up via a message sent to my work e-mail. Long story short, there is concern that the below image, which was uploaded by Loslazos depicts a gravestone that has been recently urinated on. I have to admit that the pattern of wetness on Gloria E. Anzaldúa's gravestone does look like urine. (I don't think that the person who took the image did it.) It's obviously not rain and there aren't a lot of things that can produce a pattern like that. (Never thought that I would be commenting on wetness patterns!)

If you're wondering, the person who noticed this came across the image via today's Google Doodle honoring Anzaldúa and ultimately the email was passed along to Wiki Education. I wanted to bring this up here just to see if there's anything that can be done. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 19:15, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

FYI I've removed the image from the article and left a message of explanation on the talk page. Whether to use it in the article is certainly a Wikipedia issue, rather than Commons, but I think it's an interesting question for Commons about whether or not the context for this image affects whether it is "realistically useful for an educational purpose" per COM:SCOPE. I started to take a quick run at editing it to blend the dark parts in with the rest, but it will take more time than I have available at the moment to do it effectively. — Rhododendrites talk19:52, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Perhaps photographer uploader Loslazos or another user in the area could photograph it again, in better condition.   — Jeff G. ツ 22:05, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Yes, it looks dodgy, but there could simply a person have watered the flowers below the gravestone. — Speravir – 02:57, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
Speravir's remark was exactly my first thought. Broad daylight in a cemetery, which is more likely? Someone watering flowers just before the photographer arrived, or someone urinating on a gravestone just before the photographer arrived? - Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
  • If you look at those flowers, they're pretty obviously fake. Some of them have even begun to fray at the edges due to weathering. Any gardener or maintenance person worth their salt would know better than to water those and the average person would as well. Plus if you look at the adjacent tombstone you'll see that no one has sprayed that tombstone with anything.
On a side note, it would be relatively surprising to most how infrequently real flowers are brought to gravesites. The reason is maintenance, as those flowers have to be cleaned up and the people who maintain the cemetery (usually 1-2 people on a daily basis, potentially a few more for the big cleanups that occur a few times a year) typically don't move or touch them until it's time to mow. I suppose that this is somewhat relevant to the discussion, but this is more something I've added as an interesting side note. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 15:11, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Using screenshots of google maps.

Hi.

I uploaded a number of screenshots of google maps (satellite view and street view) for use on the Hitchwiki site. I attributed them as follows: "Google maps screenshot with modification by Oliverlovelltas."

My understanding was that it's fine to do so, as long as you attribute the work to google. That's what I gained from having a look at this page: https://www.google.com/permissions/geoguidelines.html#general-guidelines

Since then, all these photos have been taken down. Is this an issue of my attribution not being comprehensive enough? If so, how can I attribute correctly? Otherwise, is there some way I can use google maps screenshots or is this just a complete no-go.

I'd really appreciate any help.

Best.

Ollie.

  • I'm unaware of any basis on which Commons can accept Google maps content. Biography

Hello. how can I upload a biography? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Errol Michael Phillips (talk • contribs) 13:27, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Probably not to this site. This is Wikimedia Commons, the media repository used by Wikipedia. Commons, like Wikipedia is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation. We host images, video, and audio of educational value. A biography would be none of these (unless you are talking about something like a scan of an old book in the public domain that happens to be a biography, and I'm sure you are not).
  • What exactly are you trying to do? Please spell it out in more detail, and perhaps someone can send you in an appropriate direction. - Jmabel ! talk 16:37, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
