Renaming file

I uploaded 'Whiwell parish church, IW, UK.jpg', but I made a typo and it should be 'Whitwell parish church, IW, UK.jpg'. How do I fix this? Or if someone can fix it for me, please do. The link at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitwell,_Isle_of_Wight will also need fixing. Thank you, Mypix (talk) 13:20, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Uploading photos (WLE Switzerland)

Hello, I am trying to upload photos for Wiki Loves Earth Switzerland 2017; uploads take a lot of time, and at the end of the upload I am logged out and asked to log in again. Once I am logged in again (often not from the first attempt), the story repeats. I tried four different browsers, two devices, and the issue is unlikely to be cookies restrictions on my devices. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 185.64.196.216 (talk) 22:26, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Have you tried using Commons:Chunked uploads? How big are the photos (in MB or GB)? How slow is your average upload speed (per speedtest.net)? Have you tried using a friend's Internet connection with faster upload speed? Have you tried having Commons remember your login for at least as long as you plan to be at that device/browser combination?   — Jeff G. ツ 00:56, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Cover 99.png

I am looking to use this image to link it to the journals' page. The image is available on the journal's webpage and it is an image of a cover of the journal in question. I tried to follow in the footsteps of other journals that have used cover images in the same way. For example, the licensing under the "Past and Present" image seems to suggest that the purposes are accepted there, but I received a caution noting that the image I uploaded for the same reasons may be rejected. I am having a hard time replicating the licensing text the other entries arrived at. See, for example, a list of cover images for academic journals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Academic_journal_covers

Any help would be greatly appreciated. --Emmanuelhogg (talk) 23:38, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Keep in mind that an en-wiki policy like that has nothing to do with Commons. You can upload directly to en-wiki to use a non-free image on a fair use basis, but Commons only accepts images that are actually free-licensed or public domain.
  • As for that particular image: the only copyrightable material there is the drawing. If that is something old and out of copyright, then we can use that image on Commons. Otherwise, no. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Wiki "Q" numbers

Hi I recently contributed photos to your 'Wiki loves Earth'. I received notification that some of my uploads did not have your Wiki Q designation. I attempted to find that number but it would seem that not all parks and protected areas in Canada have that assigned identification.- or that I could access? My photos were uploaded under my username of 'Kiwican' and I refer to images taken at the following locations. 1 South Texada Marine Park. BC 2 Jedediah Marine Park BC 3 Little Saanich Mountain. NRC property (observatory) CRD Victoria BC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiwican (talk • contribs) 01:57, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

A few quick searches on wikidata.org shows that South Texada Island Provincial Park is wikidata:Q7568630 and Jedediah Island Marine Provincial Park is wikidata:Q6172728. I couldn't find anything named Little Saanich Mountain. Are you sure it really is a park or protected area? In the future, you may be better off using the page listed at Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2017#Participating countries 2017 for questions regarding WLE Canada, namely Commons talk:Wiki Loves Earth 2017 in Canada. Добрый день. Прочитав темы про иллюстрирование статей так и не смог дать себе однозначный ответ о правомерности использования изображений с ряда источников. Uploading inherited material

I have some photos taken by my late father. I am the sole heir of this material, so I consider myself as the copyright owner (who else would be? I have no siblings). However, when I try to upload some of this material using the wizard, I am told that I can only upload my own work, unless I have the explicit consent of the author. It is tempting to declare these photos as my own work, but I prefer to be sincere. What should I do to successfully upload material which I can prove belongs to me and only to me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jpkent (talk • contribs) 16:52, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Jpkent, July 1st 2017 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jpkent (talk • contribs) 16:53, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jpkent! Using Special:UploadWizard, in the "Release rights" step, the appropriate option would be to select "This file is not my own work". In the Source field, enter something like "Scanned from a photograph taken by my father". In the "Author(s)" field, enter your father's name. Under "why you are sure you have the right to publish this work", select "Another reason not mentioned above" and "The license is described by the following wikitext". In the input field, enter {{PD-heirs}} if you would like to waive all copyright or something like {{Heirs-license|{{cc-by-sa-4.0}}}} to use a free license of your choosing (Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike in this example). LX (talk, contribs) 17:17, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Once you've done even one that way, you may find it simpler to then take the resulting file page and use it as a model to upload with Special:Upload and thereafter skip the Wizard entirely. If you want, you can {{Ping}} me here after you upload one, and I can have a look at it to make sure it's OK and tweak anything that could use tweaking. - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

But @Ruslik0 and Deborahjay: Usually the category names should be in English why I just moved the category to Songtsen Gampo. A category redirect has been created automatically. — Speravir – 23:51, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
A ri gi bod, exactly like I did: By creating a category with the new name – a category redirect is created automatically – and subsequently moving all sub categories, images and pages from the old into the new cat. There is an item “Move” hidden in the „More” tab for the creation of new cat and redirect. For the second part Cat-a-Lot is very useful. You can activate this in your preferences under the gadget tab. I do not know, but perhaps for this procedures one needs to be a registered user or similar. — Speravir – 23:51, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Old pictures upload

I have in my possession a rich material of pictures and intend to use a few in an article. The pictures are mostly private and taken between 1890 - 1926. The photographer is mostly unknown, mostly within my ancestors but impossible to verify. Others a studio portraits but mostly the studio has long since vanished or are untraceable. Most of the pictures are of course more than 100 years old and at least 75.

Now, can I upload and use these?

JohanHammar (talk) 21:15, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi JohanHammar,
Pictures from before 1897 should be OK (more than 120 years old). For others it depends if they were published and where. In which country are you? Regards, Yann (talk) 21:24, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm in Sweden. Almost all pictures have not been published at all (as far as I know), they are from a private family archive. I seem to believe that there is a 75 year limit in Sweden but I'm not sure. Regards,JohanHammar (talk)

Why in the ukWiki the File:Будинок, в якому жив і працював В. Гренджа-Донський, письменник і культурний діяч зображення 3.JPG is judged as legal and the same file File:ГренджаДонский.jpg yet of better quality is nominated for deletion in rueWiki? --Igor Kercsa (talk) 20:02, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

Why do you think the first picture is judged as legal? No deletion request just means that nobody until now cared about or stumbled upon the picture. Which Wikipedia, which film article? Is the film poster image already on Commons? — Speravir – 18:37, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm guessing from the fact that you are asking in English that you mean the English-language Wikipedia, and guessing that you do not hold the copyright to the poster in question. If I'm wrong on either count, then the following may not apply.
Commons only allows "free images", as described in COM:SCOPE. If you can get the copyright-holder to grant a sufficiently free license (such as CC-BY-SA 4.0) then you can use the process described at COM:OTRS and can upload the image to Commons. However, they are unlikely to grant such permission.
Unlike Commons, the English-language Wikipedia makes certain allowances for non-free images. These must be uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia, not to Commons. You can get further advice within the English-language Wikipedia, or you can just copy how this was done for (for example) First Blood and en:File:First blood poster.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 19:45, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Photo 1970

I would like to illustrate a photograph of Prof. Josep Trueta (my late grandfather) who died in Catalonia in 1977. The best picture we have was taken in Vancouver (B.C., Canada) in 1970 by the late Fred S. Schiffer (1917-1999). • You are asking this on Commons, not on Wikipedia. Certainly what you described is not sufficient for Commons, on at least two counts:
    • Physical possession of a photo has nothing to do with owning copyright.
    • Typically, the copyright of a photo resides with the photographer, not the subject, so they probably couldn't have granted you those rights even if they intended to do so.
  • Since you are writing in English, I'm guessing you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia. Unlike Commons, that wiki allows some use of non-free images, which must be uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia, not to Commons. You should probably read en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. One category they do allow is "[p]ictures of deceased persons, in articles about that person, provided that ever obtaining a free close substitute is not reasonably likely." But there are some steps you need to take in uploading non-free content there, please do read the linked page explaining this. - Jmabel ! talk 19:18, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

As for the file in question, I don't see the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license mentioned anywhere on http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2003716_10548037 or http://www.leodis.net/article.aspx?articleid=12, so you will need to provide some evidence of the copyright holder approving publication under those terms. Please help - We were told (truthfully, we hope!) that the Yorkshire Post photographer of this pic would now be dead, therefore, copyright is not an issue.
This file pic also appeared in a UK Daily Telegraph article - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/kate-middleton/10135251/How-the-family-of-commoner-Kate-Middleton-has-been-rubbing-shoulders-with-royalty-for-a-century.html
Please let me know what I can do to get this file "correct'. I am still new to this and thanks you for your patience. 101.182.141.22 07:02, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
Providing truthful information about the copyright situation is always important. If you upload content that is not protected by copyright, you should provide a rationale supporting that assertion – not make up some random licensing claim. Copyright protection in the UK normally lasts 70 years after the author's death, and under US copyright (which also matters because that's where Wikimedia is based), content published in 1923 or later is still likely to be protected by copyright. In this case, there is a clear assertion of authorship by the Thoresby Society at the source; they may have received the copyright through the author's testament. Thanks so much - I have completed the permission section in this file - is everything now OK? I still see a big red square on the file. Please remove red box if appropriate and let me know if all is now OK. 101.182.141.22 08:23, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Problem with a file

Hi. When I was uploading File:UNISINOS São Leopoldo.jpeg, I accidentally uploaded the wrong file. Then, I uploaded the right file, on the same name. When I use it on an article, the right picture appears; but when I view the description of the file, the wrong picture appears. How can I solve this problem? Giovanni L. Existing Wikipedia categories not found by Wikimedia Commons file upload wizard

Using the Wikimedia commons upload wizard to upload images, when I try to add categories such as "Visualization (graphic)", "Music visualization", etc, the categories are not found. I am instead led to a category creation page.

The Wikipedia topic "Music visualization", however, shows it belongs to the following categories (listed at the foot of it's page):

Category:Visualization (graphic) Category:Visual effects Category:Visual music Category:Music visualization Category:Music visualization software

Each of these exist, for example: Music visualization

Similarly, if I try to add the category "Online music education", it is not found. Again, it exists

Why are existing categories not found, and how can I correctly specify them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MusicVisualisation (talk • contribs) 06:54, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

@MusicVisualisation: this is Wikimedia Commons, and we have an entirely separate category tree that is not part of the english wikipedia category tree. Category:Music visualization does not exist in Commons. Category:Visual music does however. Commons is an image bank for all different language wikipedias and other projects, not just english wikipedia. MKFI (talk) 07:22, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Derivative works

I found a Flickr image which is Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic. This allows for derivative works.

It was watermarked so I removed the watermark and did some light colour correction.

I uploaded it and detailed the changes I had made. All metadata was left in tact and the description fields filled in for the original content creator.

Someone replaced it with the original watermarked image then added a warning tag.

What should I have done in this scenario please? I am new so I appologise if this is an obvious question.

Peeeeet (talk) 07:13, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

@Peeeeet: First off, thanks for your contributions. I know it can be confusing or intimidating at first, so I really respect you trying to sort out all of the rules. I think that a good first step may be uploading the version with the watermark first and then either overwrite it with your preferred version or upload both and link them together as related images or one being a derivative of the other. One reason why is if you do a bad job removing the watermark, someone else can see the original and do a better job. For instance, the version you uploaded and the original from Flickr have several differences in color, aspect, and size. SO it's better to start with the original version as you found it and work from there. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:22, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the help, Justin. You explaination makes a lot of sense. So if I understand correctly, all I need to do now is upload my altered version again so that it is the current? I was worried it was going to be a whole snakes nest of fixes but that's not so bad.

This is as you say, a very confusing area. Every move I make seems to raise new questions and problems. This painful learning curve is thankfully softened by the kind help and advice of experienced (and extremely patient) users such as yourself. Much appreciated.

Peeeeet (talk) 07:47, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

@Peeeeet: I think that the version as it stands is probably fine--others may disagree. I am not an expert on editing images. I am very bad at it in fact, so unless it's raw SVG code, then I don't know anything about color correction, removing watermarks, etc. Other users may be able to give much more intelligent advice about that. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:59, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

@Peeeeet: Thank you for your contribution. I don't know what the rest of your comment "Digital processing steps using GIMP 2: Watermark removed using clone tool to sample surrounding areas. Applied auto white balance correction. Trimmed colour histogram levels and raised index. Lowered overall saturation. Sharpened (unsharp mask)...." was, but that and more can be added to the source line now, or in the more experienced upload forms during upload.   — Jeff G. ツ 13:20, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, Jeff. I'll get that cleaned up and moved to the right area.

embedda data

I have noticed that some of the files I have uploaded are being marked by an Embedded Data Bot as having embedded data. Clicking on the link provided simply states that there is some kind of a password embedded in the file. I am the photographer and uploader and have no knowledge of any such password. Why am I getting these notices, should I be concerned, and is there some action I can/should take? Haven't found anything related to this in the village pump, faq, etc.... Here is a link to one such file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fort_Sumter_Artillery_image_9.jpg Thanks- DrStew82 DrStew82 (talk) 14:49, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

In that specific case the camera or the software you used to create the JPG embedded (added) another JPG in smaller resolution after the full size image. Since that second image cannot be used by the Wiki software (and most other software) and anything after the main image can be malicious content it is removed by the bot. If possible, check if you can prevent the creation of this additional thumbnail. --Magnus (talk) 14:57, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the speedy reply. I do notice that the files impacted were all taken with older cameras that I generally do not use anymore anyway. Not sure how I would have prevented them from creating the additional thumbnail but as long as I refrain from using them in the future this should not be a recurring problem. My more immediate concern is the pictures I have already uploaded that received this notification. Does that mean that those files will eventually be deleted? DrStew82 (talk) 15:05, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

I assume that the bot "fixed" it when it uploaded a new version of the image. So you shouldn't need to worry about it getting deleted. --ghouston (talk) 00:46, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

There are at least two common ways that additional images are added to JPG files. The first is a thumbnail within the Exif data, which is limited to 64k bytes. The second is through the use of the "Multi-Picture Format" which allows combining multiple images, one after the other. It's used for stereoscopic images as well as bigger thumbnails. If the bot is picking up either of these things as "password protected data", I'd say there's something wrong with it. --ghouston (talk) 00:52, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

@DrStew82: Embedded Data Bot wrote while reuploading https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fort_Sumter_Artillery_image_9.jpg "This file contains embedded data: After 2.2MiB (2295880 bytes, via Ending): Identified type: image/jpeg (JPEG image data, baseline, precision 8, 640x480, frames 3)". The embedded data appears to have been approximately 2.25-2.19=0.06 MB. Where did you see something about a password?   — Jeff G. ツ 01:08, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
Oops, good question. Yeah, it's another jpeg thumbnail appended after the end of the main image, but without any Multi-Picture Format metadata that would make it valid. I don't think the bot did any harm in this case. There's another thumbnail in the Exif which the bot left alone. --ghouston (talk) 01:14, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
If you follow the bot's link "embedded data" it gives a reason for deletion: 9. Embedded data The file contains additional embedded data in the form of a password protected archive. --ghouston (talk) 01:22, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
I think COM:CSD#F9 is too specific.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:42, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
Yes, if it were a real archive, whether password-protected or not, Special:Log/delete/Embedded_Data_Bot is the result. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 01:51, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Here it seems correct. Try to go to Template:Created with Inkscape and change the system language to Catalan. I think the error is that the last dot is added by the main template, so the specific language template should not have it. Compare it, for example, with the English version:

Duplicates where new version is higher-resolution

I've been cleaning up pictures from Geograph Britain and Ireland, and I occasionally come across a situation where Commons has the same picture at different resolutions, but where the older version is at a lower resolution. For instance, File:Dacre Castle, 2011.jpg (uploaded 2013; 640 × 424) vs. File:Dacre Castle (geograph 2648020).jpg (uploaded 2015; 800 × 530). According to Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion, "The generally accepted rule is to delete the newer duplicate," but obviously we want to end up with the higher-resolution version on Commons. So should I upload the high-resolution version under the old name and then flag the new version for deletion as a duplicate? Or do I just flag the old one as a duplicate because it's a lower resolution? For added credit, what if one or other upload was by a bot? --bjh21 (talk) 18:08, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

You can flag an older version for deletion if it is an exact duplicate of a newer file but of lower quality (including lower resolution). The rule that you cited applies only if files are exactly the same including resolution. Ruslik (talk) 20:12, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
If the information for the two is identical, then higher resolution is much more important than newer/older. If the one with the lower resolution has better information, though, it's worth copying over this better information to the higher-resolution version before marking the lower resolution as a duplicate. Since the lower resolution will be turned into a redirect, the information would otherwise be lost. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

@Tacti Steve: Welcome to Commons. They need some time to answer. Everybody at the OTRS-Team is doing that in his free time voluntarily. It could also happen that your pic will be deleted again but when they answer you they will restore the pic again. I know this sound strange but that is because of the copyright law which we respect here very strictly.--Sanandros (talk) 20:37, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

@TWorthington: , you triggered a filter designed to prevent new users from uploading copyright violations (small images taken from web). In this case it was a false positive. The trigger prevents new user cross-wiki uploads of files smaller than 5 megapixels in resolution. The image you uploaded successfully was larger and did not trigger the filter. Probably not: The original composition is from 1871, so it's old enough to be in the Public Domain pretty much anywhere in the world, but newer recordings of it can still be subject to copyright. There is not enough information available at archive.org to find out whether the recording is free and it certainly doesn't sound very old. Hi Ian! Commons:Guidance for paid editors contains information about sharing company logotypes. If the new logotype is just text like the old one, please upload it here on Commons as {{PD-textlogo}}. You should upload it under a different name than the old one, and then the article on Wikipedia will need to be edited to use the new file. LX (talk, contribs) 18:38, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Nevermind, I figured it out; there was a character which the Wizard would not accept in each of those instances. Feels like something maybe worth adding to the main documentation page, though. Snow (talk) 03:11, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Copyright and using images

For the Dutch Wikipedia article on ancient Greek astronomy I have been looking for good images and found some (here is a complete overview) on the web page of an Ohio State University professor (here). The note at the bottom says: "While I reserve Copyright on these images, you are free to use them for any educational or non-commercial purpose. All I ask is that you contact me if you use them so I have a record". I therefore contacted the professor and exlpained everything, and he agrees with using some of his images for the Wikipedia article. He is even willing to provide better images (not online; higher resolution etc.). My question concerns the legal side: how do we do this? Providing each image with credits and a link to the original website, of course, but what exact license should I use? Or should the author send an e-mail for approval? Regards, Kiro Vermaas (talk) 09:21, 5 July 2017 (UTC).

Hi Kiro Vermaas,
Use "for any educational or non-commercial purpose" or "for the Wikipedia article" is not enough for Wikimedia Commons. We need a free license, which means use for any purpose, including commercial. Please see COM:OTRS for the instructions how to send a permission. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:29, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
+1 to Yann. Kiro, you should start in Category:Ancient Greek astronomers and look into the sub categories. However, Eudoxus of Cnidus is missing until now (I intend to change this later). Update: done. --Speravir — Speravir – 18:35, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the replies. I've sent an email to the author that we cannot upload his images. I uploaded some things in the past, and I guess I'll have to make some new images myself. I did, by the way, find the current collection of images on Commons and used it in the article, but it is a rather small collection. There is, for example, one image that illustrates Eudoxus' cosmological model, but I find it too simple and incomplete (perhaps photoshopping some labels to explain the rings would also help). Regards, Kiro Vermaas (talk) 10:15, 11 July 2017 (UTC).
@Kiro Vermaas: hello there fellow Dutchman, you could upload his images if he releases them under the rights permitted by Wikimedia Commons,if you wish to do so please refer to Commons:OTRS (this link), and let him e-mail 📧 them, though you should warn him that others may commercially use hin illustrations though he could request a license that he should always be named as the original author. --1.55.177.148 02:25, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Image of Alice Tangerini

  • Can I upload this image to the commons given this? If I could, then could I possibly crop out the extra space to focus the image on the person? Thank you in advance. Aoba47 (talk) 20:14, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
    • Nope. Neither non-commercial nor no-derivatives is an acceptable limitation for Commons. And no-derivatives means the license would not even allow you to crop the face and publish it in any circumstances. - Jmabel ! talk 22:47, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
No, you can’t. The crucial points here are non-commercial (nc) and no derivatives (nd), cf. Commons:Licensing. — Speravir – 22:50, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Like @Aoba47, I, too, work hard to avoid uploading any sort of image. It is a bureaucratic nightmare, and sometimes, months or years after uploading, somebody will find fault with the image and mark it for deletion. That requires me either to revisit something I've probably forgotten about, or to let the image just go away (after all the work I did in creating and/or uploading it). Life is too short to get involved with this sort of thing. Lou Sander (talk) 23:17, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

The SVG armenian Wikipedia logo have truncated letters. Please, fix it.

--Rowan03 (talk) 03:03, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Fixed, but it is now wider. There is a Wikipedia-logo-v2-hynew.svg with a narrower font and the width used so far in the “old” version. I replaced all uses of the former with te latter file where possible for me. — Speravir – 18:22, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Change file format

I uploaded a PDF document File:Bicycle and Motorcycle Trail.pdf with images, equations, and text, but Wikipedia does not render it very well. Characters that are italic in the original PDF do not appear that way when the document is displayed in Wikipedia. I would like to replace it with a PNG version, but when I try to upload the new file, I get the message "File extension ".pdf" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png)." When I try to change the file extension, I get the message "This is the name of the file you will be overwriting. You cannot modify this." Is it simply not possible to change the file format when using the "Upload a new version of this file" option? -AndrewDressel (talk) 16:34, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

That's correct. You have to upload it as a new file. --Magnus (talk) 17:21, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Missing review tools

I do a lot of image reviews and I don't know what happened but suddenly, in the left-hand tool section, I no longer have the tools for adding no-source, no-permission, etc, buttons/link when on file pages. The only button/link of that type still visible are the "Nominate for deletion" and "Perform batch task" links but "Perform batch task" does not appear to be functioning either, however that's not useful for single image notices. Does anyone know where these links have suddenly vanished to? I did not change any of my preferences and yes I have quit my browser and also logged out and in again. Any ideas? Ww2censor (talk) 10:48, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Ww2censor! Missing links in the tools section is usually caused by using user scripts with calls to deprecated functions. This can cause Javascript processing to terminate, causing other scripts not to be executed either. A common culprit lately has been addPortletLink, which should be replaced with mw.util.addPortletLink. Your common.js imports User:Kanonkas/twinkle.js, which in turn imports User:Kanonkas/warn.js, which calls addPortletLink, so that might be a problem. There may be other instances in the scripts imported from your common.js and/or monobook.js; I haven't checked. Check your browser's console (usually Shift+Ctrl+J or Shift+Ctrl+K) for error messages about deprecated functions. LX (talk, contribs) 18:59, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
@LX: Thanks for the suggestions. I removed the User:Kanonkas/twinkle.js script which put me back to what had been working until this change but removing it makes no difference and does not restore the status quo, so I'm stumped. Any other ideas? Ww2censor (talk) 10:56, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
Ww2censor: What does the browser console say? LX (talk, contribs) 11:01, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
@LX: I don't know where to find the console in the browser I use. I'm on a Mac using Brave browser. I open the same image in Safari and in the developer mode the application has a "web inspector" and a "javascript console". The following 1 error and 3 warnings appear that state:

Ww2censor: None of those warnings should be serious enough to stop other scripts from working.
Just to confirm: is the Quick Delete gadget (not just AjaxQuickDelete) enabled under the Maintenance tools section of the gadgets section of your preferences?
Here is just fine. I'll run out of ideas eventually, and then someone else can step in. :o) LX (talk, contribs) 13:47, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

Upload wizard to be used for replacements

Can one use the upload wizard to replace existing images? The replacement images are identical, but better cleaned and better contrasted where it was possible. Also frames were added where it was missed in the original upload, but does exist in the originals.— Ineuw talk 05:49, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

  • You can replace existing images, but the upload wizard isn't involved. You normally have to have had an account a certain minimum amount of time and have a certain minimum number of edits to upload over an image (sorry, I don't know the numbers offhand) or I gather someone can give you this privilege manually. When you look at the "File history" section on the page for the relevant file, do you see "Upload a new version of this file" below the versions of the files? If so, you already have this privilege; click that, and proceed. If not, we can arrange to get you this privilege.
  • One aside: if the pictures are not your own, and the changes are in any way likely to be at all not to the taste of the original uploader, I strongly recommend uploading them under a different name as derivative versions. People generally aren't happy to have their photos overwritten by things they don't consider improvements. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. I am the original uploader. The source of all images is the Internet Archive, and I have the rights to do it. The user restrictions have been met long ago. My issue is that there are hundreds of images and I have been replacing the one by one. If it cannot be done through the Upload wizard, then please forget this post, and I will continue to do it individually. — Ineuw talk 04:21, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

Using Cat-a-lot, "category redirect" comes up

I do a lot of categorization of unidentified images. I go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Media_needing_categories_as_of_4_December_2016 or similar page. I click on Cat-a-lot and enter a possibly appropriate name for a category for the image, "Association football clubs of the United Kingdom".

Cat-a-lot returns "Category redirect". If I copy the image to "Association football clubs of the United Kingdom," it is now on the redirect page.

Why doesn't Cat-a-lot, recognizing a redirect situation, automatically generate the correct category page, so that I can now follow its tree, and I don't have to leave Cat-a-lot?

To get the name of the page that "Association football clubs of the United Kingdom" redirects to, I have been opening a new tab and following the redirect. But that is unnecessarily time-consuming. Downtowngal (talk) 01:29, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

  • Is the text you added copyrighted? If you copied it from someone else's book or web site and they didn't grant an appropriate license, then it is probably a copyright violation. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
    • The recipe is actually my own interpretation. Admittedly, I do have two cookbooks containing China's Chaozhou regional recipe. However, both books' interpretations suggest using potato leaves, but after researching the soup's history, it was impossible because back in Song dynasty China do not have potatoes until the Ming dynasty after traders brought them from North America. The Chinese people during the Song dynasty period likely used other leaf vegetable like amaranth, spinach, or ipomoea aquatic to prepare it, as no one knows which one they actually used back then. In addition, I doubt that some people, such as Americans, would even like to digest potato leaves even if they are edible, which I suspected is why the soup is not in any part of Chinese restaurants' menu here in the US. I included these choices on my interpretation in hope that people would prepare the soup faithful to the original recipe as possible. Plus, it is also can be a part of a healthy vegetarian meal. --NeoBatfreak (talk) 19:57, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
If you are the author of this text, then there is no problem. Ruslik (talk) 20:27, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, because after I researched the soup's history, I feel that China is no longer faithful to the soup's original recipe since the Ming dynasty due to they typically use potato leaves, which during Song dynasty period do not have. Due to my family was originated from Chaozhou, I've added the recipe of my interpretation in hope that people can start trying to be faithful to the original as possible.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 20:49, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Selfies

I have started several English Wikipedia articles about living people. Many of these people would like to put a selfie into the Commons, so readers can tell what they look like. When one of these folks uploads a selfie, is it necessary for them to get a username first? (Most of them would prefer to avoid this, since they will probably never use that username again.) Lou Sander (talk) 23:08, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

But isn't their identity protected when they get a username? Lou Sander (talk) 15:57, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
For this purpose, if you already had an account not closely associated with your real name, it would be good to create an account that is closely associated. Perfectly OK to have more than one account, as long as you don't do things like using both in the same discussion thread to create the false appearance of two people agreeing, or voting twice. - Jmabel ! talk 01:09, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
Lou, another possible way would be if you’d upload the images, and the photographers would give a permission (then it not necessarily had to be selfies BTW). For permissions cf. Commons:OTRS. — Speravir – 16:32, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I've been uploading quite a bit of pictures here lately almost all of then are taken with my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, yet none of them appear in the "hidden category" Category:Taken with Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, the metadata does record the device, are these categories deprecated? Pictures don't get these kinds of Categories added to them automatically, you have to put them there yourself. Sometimes other users or bots do this as well but not necessarily in a systematic manner – I guess that's how your older pictures ended up in that Category. If you want to add this Category to all your recent uploads: Cat-a-lot works on Special:MyUploads. Hope that helps? --El Grafo (talk) 15:09, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
I think my bot is the only bot that does the classification. It only collects up to 100 images for each device, because the Structured data project may provide a better way of storing such information in future, as discussed at the original Commons:Bots/Requests/BotAdventures bot request. For the same reason, it may not be worth adding the categories manually either, unless it can be done with minimal effort. The bot can do it effortlessly for devices that it knows about, but it does take some effort to update it with the constant stream of new devices, particularly mobile phones. --ghouston (talk) 00:13, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

    1. Commons doesn't have articles, so maybe you meant to ask this somewhere else.
    2. I am not sure what you mean by "WIKIMEDIA in Japanese". Wikimedia is the foundation that umbrellas both Wikipedia and the Commons. Maybe you mean "Wikipedia in Japanese"? Cropping an image

I was hoping to find information on requesting an edit for a commons image on the Help:Contents page (no luck, unless well-hidden). Is this help desk proper place? There is an image that would benefit from a bit of cropping, specifically, File:Blackie and Churchill.jpg:

The right side could be cropped to remove the (partial) person bending over, and some of the foreground deck could be cropped (mostly for balance). As the filename suggests, the informational content is Churchill and "Blackie" the cat; and some cropping would provide focus on the subject (as well as being more photogenic). -- 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:1C:247F:9E77:82FF 07:28, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

To my understanding of recent U.S. copyright precedents, the photographer cannot assert copyright ownership over images of such artwork. (Even so, my own modifications would seem to turn the photo into something other than the work of the photographer.)

It may be that I have not used an appropriate 'tag', according to Wikimedia's system. I could not find an exact fit for the Creative Commons by-line used by the photographer. In any case, I plead befuddlement over the archane complications involved. --Nielshutch (talk) 08:35, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

This is a photograph of a three-dimensional structure. The photographer had a range of angles to choose from, and as such, the photograph exceeds the threshold of originality required for copyright protection. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag#This does not apply to photographs of 3D works of art. The copyright license chosen by the photographer, Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 is non-free and therefore incompatible with Commons' mission and licensing requirements. That's why you couldn't find it when uploading. LX (talk, contribs) 09:01, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Permission via Twitter?

An actor has expressed interest in releasing a picture of himself as CC-BY-4.0, and I want to make it as easy as possible for him. If he tweeted the pic, and I ran that tweet through archive.org's Wayback Machine, would that be an acceptable alternative to him emailing OTRS? -- Nick Moreau (talk) 11:56, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Is it a selfie, and/or he is the photographer that pressed the button and took the shot? In this case I don't see why not. If the photograph was a headshot/portrait taken professionally, a paparazzi still, or any photo taken by anyone else, he might not be in a legal position to release it as CC as it would belong to that person. In that case, OTRS would be needed because OTRS would need to hear from that photographer in question saying that they agree to CC for their work. (Many times actors/personalities use their headshots and release them as CC without being legally able to. Some photographers in some cases have actually refused a free license.) seb26 (talk) 12:24, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Not sure yet. I've just tried to explain the two routes in a series of tweets, trying to steer them to self-created, but I'm very glad that Twitter could count as acceptable for release. Thanks!
(I've previously had the parent of a celeb offer to send a pic they "own", and promptly send a pic of their actress daughter from a red carpet, photographed by a pro, and not understand the difference between "owning" a file and owning copyright.) -- Nick Moreau (talk) 12:43, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Bug with combination "u-x"

Hi. Maybe you can help me. In Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes when i try to save the world "l-u-x-u-r-y" in the title, it is shown as a "u" with a peculiar accent. This happens on Chrome and also Firefox on MAC, What can I do?--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:16, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Other vowels seem fine: axe, ex cathedra, fixing, oxen... but... tŭedo! I don't remember I have ever seen anything similar in the past, and I am quite sure I did not change my preferences here on commons.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:20, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, I did not understand what you talking about. Can you explain better? Ruslik (talk) 19:34, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
@Alexmar983: Esperanto has a few letters like "ŭ" in its alphabet. Since these are hard to type on a typewriter or a computer, there are alternative ways to input them and one common method is this "ux" one where you typed "tuxedo" and if you are printing it, someone will just understand that you mean "tŭedo" or if this is electronic, a computer can change it into "tŭedo" automatically. Somehow, it seems like you have this happening for you. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:40, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

It sounds like EoMagicalConversion, under Preferences/Gadgets. Do you have that enabled?--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:52, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
Alexmar983: You should have something that looks like at the top of your screen. Click the language name next to your user name. At the bottom of the popup, select "Input settings" and select something suitable, or just press "Disable input tools". LX (talk, contribs) 19:52, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
My language is English, was English and I have not touched that section recently. maybe I might have changed it to italian and back to English to show it to a newbie on the screen in May, but that's it.--Alexmar983 (talk) 01:56, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
I have also clicked on "disable input tool" and the result is.... "Lŭury" and "tŭedo".... so still no improvement--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:00, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

In the meantime, I have fixed it logging out. Still, I have no recall of changing any personal set up. I never open my preferences here on commons, I try to test new features on enwikipedia (where I don't have this problem with the breve accent, BTW) or itwikisource but not here.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:52, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Prosfilaes thank you, I did not see your line last time. You were right, EoMagicalConversion was on in my preferences interface. But I rarely check my preferences here, I don't even understand how I could have checked that box even by mistake, it is far away from the few options I have ever selected (for example, croop tool, probably the last one I ever wanted to select). BTW, it must have happened recently, Esperanto orthography includes other diacritic marks (I am eo-2, I know) and I have a slight form of dysgraphia so writing often in both English and Italian and making some typos, I would have noticed it in the past. So it should have happened recently. So strange...--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:14, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

reupload of deleted photos, (donation from artist)

Last semester, students from Wiki Learning videoed an interview with artist Guillermo Ceniceros, which is on the artist's eswiki and enwiki articles. This prompted the artist and in particular his son (User:GuillermoCenicerosGonzalez) to upload and add photos of the artist and a couple of his works. Needless to say, they are unfamiliar with our policies and procedures and the photos got taken down from Commons, so they contacted us at Wiki Learning. I explained the need for an OTRS letter sent from the artist's official homepage (guillermoceniceros.com) but I realize that the system will not allow us to upload the photos again since they have been deleted once. Im willing to help out, but I would like to know once we have the letter written and send to OTRS correctly, how can we get the photos back up? Thank you. Thelmadatter (talk) 17:17, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

This is explained on Commons:OTRS:

Each ticket will be reviewed by a volunteer. If there is sufficient evidence of a valid permission, the volunteer will mark the file(s) concerned as reviewed. The volunteer will also act to restore any files which may have been deleted before the permission could be verified...

Deleting old version of my image file leaving only my new version of it

Hello, please note that I am not expert at all with technical things. So please provide full/easy details in case someone is able to help me. From the corresponding button, I have uploaded a new version of one image file of mine which I have previously made available to all in Wikimedia Commons and which is nicely used on one Wikipedia webpage. The only difference of my new image file with respect to my old image file is in the metadata (for privacy reasons I removed metadata from my new image file). Now I would like to remove my old original image file while leaving only my new image file, since currently both appear to be there. I tried deleting my old image file for a while from within Wikimedia Commons (also from within Wikipedia), but had no success. I searched this topic in the FAQs and archives for a while, but had no success. Can someone help me deleting my old original image file while leaving only my new image file? • I assume this was about File:Pieve di San Marco.jpg. Please, if you have a similar request in the future, provide a link! I've deleted the old version. NOTE that admins can still see it, but others cannot.
  • I am guessing (with near certainty) that you don't have deletion privileges. If this arises in the future, you can ask any admin to do this on your behalf. (Nothing actively wrong with asking here, but it's overkill.) See Commons:Revision deletion for more info.

Replacing a picture on Airport Carbon Accreditation page

Dear HelpDesk Officer,

I need to replace an erroneous picture on Airport Carbon Accreditation page with a good one, but somehow the system wouldn't let me delete it. It's about the picture called "Pledging airports". I wanted to replace this pic, but somehow when I uploaded the right pic, it was created as a duplicate and doesn't show on the page.

Could you help me please?

On another note, how could i become an administrator of Airport Carbon Accreditation's page?

Thank you in advance for your help. Kind regards, Agata Lyznik

<email> — Preceding unsigned comment added by AgataLyznik (talk • contribs) 14:32, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

  • This is hard to answer, since you don't link anything. In general, you don't "replace" pictures on Commons, though you might upload a different picture under a different name and use it instead of the prior picture in (for example) a Wikipedia article. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
Okay Agata... a lot of issues to sort through here.
  • You haven't provided any links, but I'm guessing you're talking about replacing File:Pledging airports.jpg, which is used on en:Airport Carbon Accreditation on English Wikipedia, with the more recently uploaded File:Pledging airports' logos.jpg.
  • Changing which image is used in the article is simply a matter of editing the article. Neither file is marked as a duplicate.
  • You are claiming that those files are entirely your own work and that you are the copyright holder. Obviously, you haven't created these logotypes yourself, so that's not true, and you cannot publish files like these under a free license without the consent of all the involved copyright holders. Many of the logotypes may be simple enough to be ineligible for copyright protection, but given the low threshold of originality required in the UK, at least the logotype of Bristol Airport is likely to be problematic.
  • You cannot delete files yourself. Only Wikimedia Commons administrators can do that. Administrators on Wikimedia Commons (this site) and Wikipedia (including English Wikipedia) do not administrate individual pages. No one is allowed to act as though they are the owner of a particular Wikipedia page.
  • As you included an @aci-europe.org e-mail address in your message here, I'm assuming you work for Airports Council International Europe, which appears to be the owner of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. In that case, not only are you not allowed to claim ownership of articles about the organisation's initiatives, but you should not be editing them at all, because you have a conflict of interest. Please note that if you are being paid to edit Wikipedia, you must disclose it, and failure to do so is a violation of the site's Terms of Use.

Can ShutterStock images be uploaded to Wiki Commons?

Hi. I'm currently trying to get Marilyn Manson's Holy Wood album to featured status, but two reviewers have raised the issue that there are no photographs of the band on the article. I've trolled through the likes of Flickr, Google Images, Pixabay, etc. for CC images, but couldn't find any. The closest I've found are several images on Shutterstock.com, such as this. Although I see no specific CC license agreement anywhere on the website, it does say the image can be used for "Editorial/non-commercial use". Does Wikipedia count as "editorial/non-commercial use"? Could I upload a couple of these images to the Commons? Thanks. Homeostasis07 (talk) 17:24, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

No. Content restricted to non-commercial use cannot be uploaded to Commons. Content on Commons must be free for any use. Please see Commons:Licensing (or at least the introduction). Furthermore, that statement only describes restriction on what type of license Shutterstock is able to offer if you pay them. Their content is completely non-free. It looks like you are talking about an article you are writing on the English language Wikipedia. Note that en.wikipedia (but not Commons!) under certain conditions allows to upload non-free files locally: see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content for details. --El Grafo (talk) 19:54, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Try to upload a photograph and it wont let me!

Hello,

My wife took a picture in Baghdad of the school sign for the newly reopened Baghdad International School.

I have tried to edit the Baghdad International School main article to upload this and to point out their unauthorised use of the Cambridge Univeristy shield thereby implying that they are an affiliated Cambridge International School (via www.cie.org) which they are not!

Is there any way that we would be allowed to upload this photograph?

I am hoping to update the article as I don't want people being misled that this is an official Cambridge International School when it is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sraper (talk • contribs) 09:25, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

So I downloaded it and then uploaded it to Wikimedia. I don't understand all the different licences - what's the correct one to use or the correct way to get this uploaded so it can be used in Wikipedia? Thanks --MikeSarkID (talk) 16:01, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

@MikeSarkID: Please ask her to send permission via OTRS. We can then determine the correct license tag.   — Jeff G. ツ 18:57, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
More precisely:
  1. Did she take the picture herself? If so, then she can offer a license; if not, then the fact that she posted it to FB still doesn't make it hers to license.
  2. Assuming she did take the picture herself, then when she grants permission via OTRS, she should be specific about a license.
  3. Concurrent with sending permission via OTRS, you should replace the {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} template with the {{OTRS pending}} template, and also add the template for the same license she chooses. That will prevent it being deleted in the meanwhile. If you don't do this, it will probably be deleted now and restored when the permissions thing is sorted out, but OTRS is backlogged by over a month so that could be a while.
Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

She says she will send the OTRS email. I have changed the template as above. I've guessed at the licence she will choose but assume that, as given above "We can then determine the correct licence tag." Thanks for your help MikeSarkID (talk) 09:49, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Also, since you have a conflict of interest, you should not follow the advice above to edit the page about yourself. You can upload another photo here (taken by yourself or with e-mailed permission from the photographer) and suggest replacing it on the article's talk page. USA copyright OK I hope

File:Princess Mary and Lady Mayoress Isabella Lupton 1926.jpg

The original file/picture above appeared in both the Yorkshire Evening Post (Leeds) and the Yorkshire Post (Leeds) - these papers were published in London and, along with the UK Times and UK Telegraph and UK Financial Times - were sent to Library of Congress and other leading USA intitutions where the Royal (Princess Mary was sister of both King George V and Edward VIII) photos - in particular - were then reprinted/republished in USA publications such as The British Colonialist (1858-1951) http://www.britishcolonist.ca/

Please let me know what else I can do. Thanks 101.189.184.64 01:52, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

The photographer was freelance photographer who was largely retired by 1912. His name was "Mac Iver" of Leeds/Bradford. There was no initial in front of the surname so he would be Donald Mac Iver. He died in 1929. https://sites.google.com/site/leedsandbradfordstudios/home/donald-mac-iver N.B. - There is a very small chance that the photo was taken by his daughter who was possibly employed as a photographer's assistant at The Yorkshire Post. But as the file/photo is of Royalty - I think it likely that her father was asked to do the photos for the newspaper. Please let me know if this helps and if you can fix it all up! Sorry again for my naivety. 101.189.184.64 11:00, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

Copyright for organizations that no longer exist

Hi, can anybody tell me how to deal with copyright when the original organization that (presumably) held the copyright no longer exists? In this case, it is the cover of a school magazine from a school that closed in the early 1970s. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Compo (talk • contribs) 14:56, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

  • You don't say what country (I'm assuming this is a separate question from Princess Mary etc. above). Laws vary from country to country.
  • As far as I know, there is no country where the dissolution of an organization extinguishes copyright, so the copyright status remains the same as if the organization still existed.
  • As for who owns a copyright previously owned by the dissolved organization: that can be very hard to work out, unless there is a clear successor organization, or you have access to the legal papers from the era. If the image is truly orphaned, then there is no one from whom you could obtain the legal permissions that Commons requires.
  • However, it is relatively unlikely that the school owned the copyright to an image on the cover of its school magazine. That copyright would most likely belong to the photographer/artist. In most countries, the only exception to that would be if it was a work for hire (which is an entirely different matter than simply paying to use the image). - Jmabel ! talk 16:41, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

Uploading Flute Version of Indian Songs : Video Files

Hi, If I manage to convince a flute player to upload his video files on Commons my only concern is the songs he plays on his flutes are famous Bollywood songs. I don't have information about script been under copyright or their reproduction rights. --Abhinav619 (talk) 15:17, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

Multiple accounts

I want to have a second account under my own real name so that I can use my own work elsewhere without attribution (mostly on Quora). To maintain anonymity of my primary account, I do not want to publicly link the two accounts. I realize that clever people may be able to figure it out.

Is this allowed?
Is there a formal procedure?
Is it a bad idea?

Constant314 (talk) 16:46, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

Having multiple accounts is allowed as long as they are not abused to evade bans or blocks, to deceive or mislead (for example by participating in a discussion using both accounts to create an illusion of greater support for one's position) or for other nefarious purposes. We generally follow the same principles as English Wikipedia. It is recommended (but not required) to link the accounts using {{User Alternate Acc}}. LX (talk, contribs) 18:41, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Is there a way to link accounts that is not public? Constant314 (talk) 22:14, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
Nothing systematic, but I imagine you could send an email to the OTRS people so that a record of the linking that could be verified. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

How To Add Image in My Wikipedia Page?

Hello,

I have facing some problem while creating my Wikipedia page for upcoming Comedy Film. I tried to upload my film poster in the page but it shows some error related to copyright? This poster was design by my designer so how can i provide copyright code to wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bhattrakesh (talk • contribs) 13:53, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

@Bhattrakesh: Hi,
The copyright of film posters is usually owned by the designer and/or the producer, so you need a formal written permission from them before uploading it here. Please see COM:OTRS for the instructions. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:14, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

حذف صفحة المسجد الصفوي

Hello Wikipedia team,

I would like to know the reason of my artical deletion. I got mixed masseges about the reason, first it was the way I presented the subject, and second about the pictures published on the artical.

I would appreciate if you educate me about the reason of deletion, and if I will be able to publish the artical again, it is history and the history can't be changed, but the way how we write it can be discussed. thanks, Regards, Kadomia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kadomia (talk • contribs) 20:10, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

@Kadomia: This is not Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Commons is a sister project to it. Was your article deleted on Wikipedia? —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:25, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
Kadomia: The site you're on right now is Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. We do not host articles. I don't see any evidence of any articles that you've created here that may have been deleted. An automatic filter seems to have correctly prevented you from creating a page called "المسجد الصفوي الكاظمية", which would have been outside of our project scope because (again) we don't host articles here on Commons.
You've also created pages over on the English Wikipedia and the Arabic Wikipedia projects. As explained on your user talk page on English Wikipedia, the article you created on English Wikipedia was deleted because it wasn't in English. If you have questions about that, en:Wikipedia:Help desk is a more appropriate place to ask. On the Arabic Wikipedia, the log should explain the reason for deletion there. It looks like it was deleted because either the topic or the way you wrote about the topic wasn't appropriate for an encyclopedia. If you have questions about that, ar:ويكيبيديا:فريق_المساعدة/طلبات is probably a more appropriate place to ask.
There is also an ongoing deletion discussion about the media files you uploaded here: Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Kadomia. When you uploaded these files, you claimed that you personally created all these photographs. That does not appear to be true. You need to provide truthful information about the files. You can do so on the file description pages and/or in the deletion discussion. LX (talk, contribs) 20:43, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Greetings I am uploading book cover images to supplement the page of an editor, I have permission to do so, still I find no suitable way to state this. Could you please tell me how to update these images so they will not be deleted from the page I am building. Thanks,

--Nukak (talk) 20:42, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

You will need to obtain permission from the copyright holder (probably the photographer) to publish the work under a free license (a copyright license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the book cover for any purpose, including commercial purposes). Permission for you to upload the image for use on a specific page is not sufficient. Please see Commons:OTRS for instructions on how to obtain and submit an appropriate permission statement. LX (talk, contribs) 20:48, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, still the cover is not from a photograph but a design from a publishing house, and I am a paid editor for this house, how do I properly state this condition (it´s in my profile) so there is proof of this permission to publish the image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nukak (talk • contribs) 21:14, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

The only element of that cover design appears to be the photograph. If the publishing house commissioned the photograph as a work made for hire or had the copyright transferred to them in writing, then the permission should come from someone authorised to speak on behalf of the publishing house on copyright matters. LX (talk, contribs) 21:51, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
  • I assume LX meant to write The only copyrightable element of that cover design appears to be the photograph. And he is otherwise correct. We need explicit permission by email as described at COM:OTRS. You or someone at your publishing house presumably know who holds the copyright and can therefore grant such permission. - Jmabel ! talk 23:43, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
  • The other way to do this without the OTRS process would be for Villegas Editores to publish the image on their site and grant the relevant free license (e.g. CC-BY-SA 4.0), link that as the source, and apply the same license on Commons. But, again, the publisher need to make sure they actually own the copyright to the photo, not just the right to use it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:46, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

upload a painting to commons

Hi,

Please assist. I'd like to upload this picture of the Annandale Farm to commons.

http://digital.sl.nsw.gov.au/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=FL3259934&embedded=true&toolbar=false

It is out of copyright, the artist Samuel Elyard dying before 1955.

What particular procedures do I have to follow to successfully and legally upload the picture?

thanks Poyt448 (talk) 02:29, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure why 1955 would suffice, but in fact he died in 1910, so this is fine.
  • If you are using one of the many tools where you edit source directly, you can use {{PD-old-auto-1923 }} in place of a license. I don't know the Upload Wizard well; can someone tell this person how to do this with the Upload Wizard? - Jmabel ! talk 04:28, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

thanks, I've uploaded this;

Annandale Farm, painted by Samuel Elyard 1877. location; present day Stanmore, NSW, Australia

Please advise if this is OK for commons.

Mass copyvios

I'm not familiar with Commons Helpdesks so please redirect me if I am in the wrong place.
Yesterday User:Udhayasuriyandhandapani uploaded 19 files, claiming them all to be "own work" - The final one File:Salem steel.jpg may be, as it has camera Metadata the rest have no Metadats or credit "google". I have tracked down the first 7 files (which took some time) and nominated them for deletion as copyvios - do I have to track down where the rest have come from? or based on the users record can they be batch deleted? - Arjayay (talk) 09:37, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Arjayay! Here is absolutely fine.
Obvious individual copyright violations do not need to be brought up for discussion; just tag them with {{copyvio}}. This is easiest to do if you enable the Quick Delete gadget under the Maintenance tools heading in the Gadgets section of your preferences.
When a user uploads a large number of obvious copyright violations, it is often better to create a batch nomination. This way, you don't necessarily need to track down the source of every single copyright violation. Here is an example of a batch deletion discussion that I started, to give you an idea of what a rationale for such a discussion can look like. After creating the nomination, I've edited it to add some links to a few of the sources from where the files were grabbed, as well as other notes. Creating batch deletion discussions is easiest to do if you enable the VisualFileChange gadget (also under the Maintenance tools heading).
Finally, tracking down copyright violations is easier if you enable the GoogleImages tab and the Tineye tab extensions, again in the same section. I was able to find the source of File:Salem steel.jpg pretty quickly. LX (talk, contribs) 10:15, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
Hi LX Thanks for your reply - I've added the "Quick Delete", "GoogleImages tab" and the "Tineye tab" (I now need to work out where they are, and how to use them). However neither I, nor my "find" function, can locate the "VisualFileChange gadget" under Maintenance tools - or under any other tab in my Preferences. Am I being semi-blind, as usual, or do I need something like improved user-rights to access this? - Arjayay (talk) 12:00, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
See Help:VisualFileChange.js#Step_0:_How_to_Install: You might have to install it manually by editing your common.js if you don't have autopatrolled user rights. --El Grafo (talk) 12:11, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Size of mass deletion request (maximum number of files in one request)

I've asked User:Fae for if I could nominate parts of his script uploads of Flickr albums for deletion because they are out scope and he' OK with it. see the section on his talk page. I think I will use VisualFile Change for the file nomination. I expect the number of files to nominate in the hundreds. Now my question is: How many files one of the mass deletion requests should include that it stays be handleable for the admins. --Steinfeld-feld (talk)

  • I would say that if the issues are all the same & there is no likelihood that different decisions would be made about one image than another, then there really is no upper limit. - Jmabel ! talk 15:23, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
I think I'll nominate the ones I'm pretty sure now and leave the ones I'm concerned if they would have a use for later iterations. --Steinfeld-feld (talk) 15:42, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Using stellarium screenshots - own work??

I want to use a number of screenshots from Stellarium (screenshots showing constellations, as seen from East Africa - because most star charts on Commons show Northern Sky perspective) and label them in Kiswahili. Stellarium generally is under GPL

Stellarium Readme file:

  • 4. Graphics
  • 4.1 All graphics are copyrighted by the Stellarium's Team (GPL) except the ones mentioned below :(which I do not use)
  • 9. LICENSE

Copyright (C) 2004-2016 Fabien Chereau et al.

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.

Do I label these as my own work? And use which license? Kipala (talk) 18:26, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure I follow: 'All graphics are copyrighted by the Stellarium's Team (GPL) except the ones mentioned below : (which I do not use)'. But the key word here is except. The only ones they don't copyright are "the ones mentioned below".
  • Or have I misunderstood what you meant to say? - Jmabel ! talk 23:26, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
  • I copied their text.
  • I understand the language in No. 4. GRAPHICS like this: All graphics were created by Stellarium's team and put under GPL-copyright.
  • This is explained under no. 9 LICENSE "under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation".
  • The part of "except" in 4. GRAPHICS talks about segments they took over which are then listed below (nos 4.2. - 4.30, which are partly free, partly to be used with credits, partly only non commercial).
  • The text I downloaded with the programme is also visible here:README (though with different numbers before 4. GRAPHICS).
  • So I have no doubt it can be used (we have some stellarium screenshots already) but I do not know how to enter it as described - own work or not? Kipala (talk) 15:41, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
    • So then, if I understand correctly, graphics not covered by the exceptions are copyrighted by the Stellarium's Team and are available under GPL (which should be a sufficiently free license for Commons). How would that be "own work"? - Jmabel ! talk 21:59, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
Well that is my question. The graphics as such is Stellarium GPL, I add something (Swahili desriptions) - so the final result is some mix. So how do I label it ? Kipala (talk) 22:07, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
Ah. Now I understand. If the descriptions are extensive enough to be copyrightable, then there would be two copyrights, theirs for the underlying work and yours for the annotations. As a rule, it's simplest if you offer the same license for your work as they do for theirs (GPL in this case), but that's not a requirement as long as you use a license that is appropriate for Commons. The situation is similar to if someone took a photograph of a copyrighted sculpture and there was (for example) a Free Art License available for the sculpture.
If your descriptions are just the names of constellations, or such, then they probably not copyrightable, and this would just use their license; you could of course note in the author field that you wrote the annotations, but it wouldn't change the copyright situation. Just like labeling buildings with the "Add a note" feature doesn't change the copyright status. - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
Ok thx. So I upload the screenshots with Swahili labels, register as someone else work and add the license description from Stellarium - like here: File:Mara Andromeda.png. Kipala (talk) 20:38, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
Sort of. But the license they offered is GPL, you can't just go changing that to suit yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 21:59, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Sorting out a mess

File:Korean sweet zucchini wraps.jpg: I'm not sure how best to proceed on this.

I ate some of these; they were indeed zucchini, and my original photo even shows that the cook labeled them as such. Somewhere along the way User:Isageum cropped out the label and changed the description to say this is Danhobak mussam (I just now looked up Danhobak and apparently it is kabocha, a different squash; I don't really know whether there is a Korean word for zucchini, though I imagine that nowadays there is). Now, following that, someone has requested the file name be changed to say "kabocha" rather than "zucchini". This cannot be right. The question is how much I should peel back. Certainly this should not be moved, and I am removing the move request. - Jmabel ! talk 15:14, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Someone is putting unnecessary Speedy deletion tag to the license image

Here it is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drashti_Dhami_in_jeans.jpg the file is already verified but a user keep adding the Speedy deletion tags. The Owner on flicker gave rights to use this image.GoodName (talk) 22:05, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

  • I don't think it should be a speedy, but it's probably worth a deletion discussion. Rather low-res image, apparently mirrored, from a Flickr account with no other publicly visible images. And the Flickr account apparently has a lower resolution image than this, so I assume that wasn't the original source. These seem like reasonable issues for someone to be raising. - Jmabel ! talk 22:29, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
Definitely a speedy. Uploaded to Flickr immediately before it was uploaded here; "GoodName" knows exactly what they're doing. And on top of being a blatant copyright violation, it's also a forgery, as I noted in the deletion discussion. LX (talk, contribs) 23:34, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

It means that files that you tried to upload are not in ogg and jpg formats, respectively. Ruslik (talk) 18:30, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
OGG itself is a container format, which can contain data in different codecs, see also the English article. In Commons:File types you can read about this in sections Ogg and Ogg Theora (video). An image with ZIP compressed data looks more like PNG, but you should open it in an image editor and resave it. — Speravir – 21:53, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

Can I?

Can I upload screenshot of a TV program, I know it's copyrighted, but if the OTRS didn't find it then? Abeer Mehr (talk) 10:35, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

If you really want you could upload it to Wikipedia if it falls under fair use, but commons is exclusively for free images and if it's not 100% free it shouldn't be here. --The Ivory Cowboy 🤠 (talk) 14:31, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
To clarify when I wrote uploading to Wikipedia I meant to a specific article where it is in scope as I assume that's why you're asking it here, you may then only use that image within that article or project. Commons only uses images that can be used everywhere by everyone. --The Ivory Cowboy 🤠 (talk) 14:37, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
If it's for a Wikipedia article please upload the image here after thoroughly reading this page. On commons it would get deleted instantly as it isn't free so please don't upload it here. Make sure that you have a target article and only upload it if no better image has already been uploaded before. I hope that I've helped you enough. --The Ivory Cowboy 🤠 (talk) 15:12, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
