Factitious Characters

I made up a character and want to make a Wiki page for him. Am I allowed to do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThePhiladelphian (talk • contribs) 15:03, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

That sounds completely outside of Commons' project scope. LX (talk, contribs) 18:27, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
Please do that on the English Wikipedia, not here. Note though that your character must be notable enough to have an article in Wikipedia, otherwise it won't be going anywhere of the Wikimedia wikis. Thanks, Poké95 13:43, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

How to create a page on commons? can I upload a media file direct to a page? Please answer me anyone.--Zoc2 (talk) 04:06, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

@Zoc2: The mainspace pages here at Wikimedia Commons are galleries, they have their own style, unlike the styles of other projects like English Wikipedia. You already uploaded a media file, but it was out of scope. What are you trying to do here?   — Jeff G. ツ 06:01, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Upload Wizard disappear in Ukrainian localization

Hi. While I open Main Page with English I Upload link in left toolbar point to Special:UploadWizard. While I open it with Ukrainian language I see here link to Commons:Upload/uk. I have no idea where it could be fixed and how localization works here. Please look it who know where it could be tuned. Artem.komisarenko (talk) 06:30, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

So, it looks like it's broken for me from time to time because network issue(?). By default page show Commons:Upload/uk then fix it with javascript and sometimes this javascript failed or hangs. Artem.komisarenko (talk) 06:53, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding Campoalto.png

Greetings,

I'm trying to create an article related to a school in Asuncion, Paraguay (Campoalto School). The school's seal is publicly known, as they show it in adverts and public information (website: http://campoalto.edu.py/). Is it against intellectual property rights to use a school's seal for an Wikipedia article?

Thanks in advance.

--Regopy (talk) 23:11, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

 • When I try clicking on http://campoalto.edu.py/, it seems to go into some sort of loading mode, and 30 seconds later it's not out of that, so I won't be able to see the logo there.
 • You don't ask if it is OK to upload to Wikimedia Commons, but since that is the site where you are asking the question, I assume that is implicit. Without seeing the logo it is hard to say definitively, but quite probably it is not OK to upload the logo here. "Publicly known" has nothing to do with the matter: you have provided no reason to think the logo is in the public domain, so we would need a free license from the copyright holder, which we are unlikely to get.
 • You ask about using the logo in a Wikipedia article; you don't say in what language. Each language Wikipedia has its own rules about non-free use. If you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia (since that is the language in which you pose the question) you can upload with en:Special:Upload. Instead of the Information template, use en:Template:Non-free use rationale or another more specific template from that Wikipedia related to logos. - Jmabel ! talk 00:30, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Privacy concerns?

I just came across the photo File:Mock Court at Kidzania Bangkok.jpg, and ... well, do we have a policy on photos like this?

I don't see anywhere in the image description where the uploader indicates he/she got permission from the parents of the children whose faces are clearly visible/identifiable in the image to upload it to Wikimedia Commons, and whenever I have uploaded my own photos I recall being asked questions about copyright and licensing, but not whether my photos depicted private individuals who had not directly consented to me uploading (or maybe even taking) their picture. I don't know what the laws in Thailand (where the picture was taken) or the US (where the Foundation is based and by whose laws English Wikipedia typically abides) are, but in Japan (my gaff) if I visit a venue where there are kids, I need permission even to take photos for private use (I know this because I used to work in a government office where I visited local nursery schools; my office expected me to take photos for internal records, and the schools had a lot of red tape when it came to that), and uploading is definitely out of the question. I know it's a private entertainment facility and not a school, but still...

I guess my concern would apply more broadly to any photo of a public place where people's faces are clearly visible but they didn't necessarily give their permission to be photographed, or any private venue where the owners restrict photography. Technically in either of these cases, an uploader could violate a whole bunch of private agreements and serious ethical guidelines, but not necessarily be in violation of Commons's copyright restrictions.

Has this kind of issue been discussed before? Am I just being an ethical stickler?

Hijiri88 (talk) 07:45, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Hijiri88: Not only has it been discussed before – we have guidelines in place: Commons:Photographs of identifiable people. Unfortunately, we're missing information on the legal situation in Thailand. LX (talk, contribs) 16:46, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Cannot upload SVG files that contain a non-standard DTD declaration

I just downloaded File:Atranes.svg and made some manual adjustments in a text editor. When trying to upload it, I got this error message. The DTD declaration in the file is:

<!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/DTD/svg10.dtd">

which I double-checked that I did not alter. I don't know much about the technical details of the SVG headers, but apparently something that used to be allowed now isn't. What do I need to change to make this file acceptable now? DMacks (talk) 03:49, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

May be version 1.0 is not supported? Ruslik (talk) 19:45, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
Try testing it with Commons:Commons SVG Checker and see if it throws any errors. I just downloaded the original file and tried uploading it without any modifications at File:Test.svg and it gave me the same non-standard DTD declaration warning. Uploading at the W3 validator advised me to change the doctype declaration to:
<!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/DTD/svg10.dtd">
It should upload after that. clpo13(talk) 21:46, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

You are not on Wikipedia right now. If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into to avoid falling victim to phishing), you'll notice that you're on Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others.
You don't upload pages to Wikipedia, you create them directly on that site by editing the wiki markup. For the English language edition of Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Your first article. LX (talk, contribs) 18:41, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Can I add a screenshot of a graphics algorithm I coded working for a company on an open source project?

Greetings,

I wrote some code on shadow-mapping for Google's open-source graphics engine Skia this summer as part of my summer internship for them.

Technically, all the work I produced that summer belongs to Google - however, in a sense it is my work - but at the same time, producing it required using another separate library - but that library is open source!

Is there a clear answer to this? Should I try to contact Google for clarification?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by VjiaoBlack (talk • contribs) 19:07, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

 • The copyright question is between you and Google, and without seeing your employment contract I couldn't say who owns the copyright. Doesn't the source file itself say who holds the copyright? If the code has been published without stating that that's quite an oversight. - Jmabel ! talk 23:46, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Why can't I edit pages?

This was the only place that I could ask this question. The reason is self-explanatory. I CAN'T EDIT PAGES!!! Why is this?? Is it because I am a new user? If so, how long until I can edit pages? What is going on? FYI, I use the iOS version. Is this why? What should I do? X4nMan20Oo (talk) 13:26, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

I especially cannot edit pages that I created. What is happening? X4nMan20Oo (talk) 13:33, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

 • Just to be clear: are you talking about not being able to edit Wikimedia Commons (this site) or something else? Because if you can edit this, you should be able to edit any non-protected page on Commons. Are you saying you can't edit (for example) your own user page or a page for a file you uploaded? Because these are the only sort of pages you've created on this site. - Jmabel ! talk

Yes, to make this clear, I AM talking about Wikimedia Commons. In regards to my question, it might've been the Internet server I was using at the time. I can edit some pages, but on a lot of them, it gets glitched out. Like, I try to exit the page, but it brings me right back to the editing page. Is this the reason? Or maybe it's just files? Please give me an answer. X4nMan20Oo (talk) 20:40, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

 • I doubt the glitch is on Commons' end, because when we have a glitch we usually get a number of similar reports, which hasn't happened here. - Jmabel ! talk 23:42, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Speaking as a random admin: what they seem to be saying is that the ownership of copyright may be unclear, and therefore (based on the precautionary principle) we have to say "no", unless and until that can be clarified. - Jmabel ! talk 23:54, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Yes, but why? Did you read my question? Why is this being questioned any more than hundreds of identical releases accepted every day? EEng (talk) 00:07, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: The short answer is that we respect copyrights, and if the photographer shows up, we and our reusers don't want to get sued for copyright infringement.   — Jeff G. ツ 07:04, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
You know, this is really getting to be comic. I don't need any explanations about how copyrights work, or the need to respect them, as in my professional life I'm a consulting expert on intellectual property. The question, which I am now asking for the fifth or sixth time, is this:
Why is this PARTICULAR release, which is exactly the standard release text supplied by Commons itself for content donors to use, being questioned? How is the fact situation here any different from that attendant to hundreds of others which arise each day, which are not questioned?
I don't want the short answer, the quick answer, the simple answer, the high-handed this-is-what-I-can-offer-you answer, or the I-didn't-read-the-thread-so-I-don't-know-what-the-issue-is-but-I'll-just-add-my-two-cents-anyway answer; I want the answer to that question. Now, can you or anybody else give me that? And, as I expect I know what the (illogical) answer I receive will be, will you (or whoever else has the courtesy, at long last, to intelligently engage this issue) stay with the conversation long enough to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion, instead of just falling silent when you can't figure out what to say? EEng (talk) 07:23, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: He is the subject of a photo taken from some distance. The odds that he took the photo were rather slim in the late 60s.   — Jeff G. ツ 07:31, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
OK, great. Now, what exactly does that have to do with it, since the donor/subject isn't claiming that he took it, merely that he owns it? EEng (talk) 07:36, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: We need to attribute the photo to the photographer per every CC license with a BY section (all but CC-0). If we suspect a copyright was transferred, we need a good answer as to how that happened, stored in our files in case of litigation and for peer review. We don't have even a whiff of an answer to that yet on a user talk page, let alone in our files, and so we wait.   — Jeff G. ツ 07:52, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
No, what the license [2] requires is that licensees retain the following if it is supplied by the Licensor with the Licensed Material: (i) identification of the creator(s) of the Licensed Material ... (italics added).
As to If we suspect a copyright was transferred, we need a good answer as to how that happened, that's certainly not a legal requirement, since you're entitled to rely in good faith on the facts affirmed in the release received. If that's nonetheless a procedural practice of Commons, can you explain why there's nothing at Commons:Email_templates saying so? EEng (talk) 08:13, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: I don't know, I didn't write those documents, but I have to go, sorry.   — Jeff G. ツ 08:31, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
I guess we've arrived at the part where, as predicted, you'd fall silent when you can't figure out what to say. You didn't write the documents – fine. But you must have got the idea that If we suspect a copyright was transferred, we need a good answer as to how that happened from somewhere. Can you point to that, so I'll know that this Kafkaesque odyssey has, after all, some rational basis? EEng (talk) 08:39, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Wait, don't worry about it. I believe Yann will be able to answer my questions. EEng (talk) 09:07, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: (ec) It is a bit difficult to accept a permission when the author is unknown. Personally I would accept it if the client provides a reasonable rationale why he owns the copyright. Regards, Yann (talk) 07:55, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
It's not at all strange that the creator of an image taken fifty years ago might be unknown, and there are nonetheless any number of ways by which copyright might nonetheless be owned by someone other than the creator. (It could have been a work for hire; it could have been owned by Harvard but transferred to the subject for use in his published papers; maybe his mother took it and he inherited it from her...) But we come back to the question I've asked now, a half-dozen times, which is that if you're not willing to accept the content donor's affirmation of ownership on its face, why in hell do you supply release text for them to use that asserts exactly that, without anything anywhere to indicate that you won't accept it? EEng (talk) 08:13, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: I do usually accept the content donor's affirmation of ownership on its face unless there is an indication it is false. But we very often have OTRS clients and contributors who do not understand how copyright works, and who think that the picture owner or the subject is the copyright owner, which is false. Some others think that the copyright disappeared because the photographer is unknown. That's why an indication that the client knows that is required. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:42, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Yann, I really appreciate your taking the time to give me answers which are at least logical and self-consistent – a novelty in my conversations on this problem so far. I always figured this was the heart of the problem, but since I couldn't get anyone, until you, to stay with the conversation long enough to get to this point, I've never been able to address it. I'd like to ask you to do two things:

(a) That you consider, in considering the disposition of this image, whether you believe can assume that the content donor issuing the release (who among other things is the author of [3]) probably does understand the meaning of the release he issued? I'd appreciate it if you could spare me the embarrassment of going back to him and saying, "Prove to me you own it."
(b) That you and I work together to modify two or three of the instruction pages here at Commons to avoid problems like this for content donors in the future.

EEng (talk) 09:07, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

@EEng: a) You would be surprised to know who claims what about copyright. Even famous people, or official representatives of big corporations claim things which do not exist. Here the additional issue is that the image is old, and it is quite possible that nobody remembers who took the picture, but not old enough so that the copyright has expired. The difficult task for OTRS volunteers to be diplomatic when requesting more information, or declining invalid claims. At the very least, the client needs to say who has to be credited as copyright owner. "I don't know", "nobody", or "I don't remember" can't be valid answers.
b) Contrary to what most people think, copyright is a very complex matter, and it is quite challenging to explain it for non professionals. I am not a lawyer nor a native English speaker, but our instructions could certainly be improved. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:05, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Again, Yann, I appreciate the time that you're taking the time to discuss this intelligently, but now I'm puzzled again. You say that "the client" (by which I assume you mean the person issuing the release) "needs to say who has to be credited as copyright owner". He's already told you who the copyright owner is: himself. EEng (talk) 15:48, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: File:HarryRLewis Harvard demonstrating SHAPESHIFTER 1967or1968.jpg says that the author is "unknown". Regards, Yann (talk) 16:33, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
What does that have to do with anything? Per the documentation at Template:Information, the Author is the "Original author of the file"; that person is unknown. The author is distinct from the copyright owner, and that is not unknown: it's in the release. EEng (talk) 17:07, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
That is the whole point of what I say above. If the author is unknown, it can't be released under a free license. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:18, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
What??? You just said, "At the very least, the client needs to say who has to be credited as copyright owner." Now you're saying the author needs to be known. The Author has nothing to do with it, and (as already pointed out above) the license explicitly contemplates that the author might be unknown. Can you, please, point to something in writing that sets out the rules and requirements, so we can resolve this? We're going round and round in circles. EEng (talk) 17:24, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
I am also a bit tired to repeat the same thing. Evidence shows that the uploader doesn't know or remember who took his picture, but claims to be the copyright owner. Sorry, but it doesn't work that way. Regards, Yann (talk) 18:49, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

@EEng: With all due respect, you came here asking for comment by admins. Several of us have answered you, all of us are basically in agreement with each other, and you keep just arguing with us. It seems to me like you are wanting to keep fishing until you can find an admin who will take your side, but given the number of us who have spoken up here and in the original discussion, it is pretty clear that if you can find such a person, they will be a lone voice disagreeing with a pretty broad consensus that the authorship of the photo is unclear, and the claim of ownership of copyright strikes us as weakly founded, however prestigious the person making it. Why is it so important that this particular image be on Commons? We aren't telling you you can't use it elsewhere and take your own chances. We are saying that we don't see the copyright claim as solid enough, at least on the basis of evidence provided so far, for us in our administrative capacities on Commons to be comfortable with having Commons effectively endorse the claim. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

It seems to me like you are wanting to keep fishing until you can find an admin who will take your side. No. What I wanted, at first, was someone who could explain coherently what the requirement is; even you, now, are saying that the authorship of the photo is unclear – it's not unclear, it's completely unknown, and as I've pointed out over and over, and surely you must know, the author of the work isn't required – the owner is. Since, so far, every participant here seems unable even to distinguish the concept of author from that of copyright owner, I gave up on that, and am now asking for someone to point to the actual requirements written somewhere, so I can just see for myself. Can you do that? You say there's pretty broad consensus, except not one of you can coherently explain what the basis of his/her reasoning is; you just keep jumping from one unsupported statement of requirements to another. It appears there are no actual procedures or standards here, just people making it up as they go along. So, one more time,
where are the rules/concepts/procedures/guiding principles/whatever, that you claim to be adhering to, written down? EEng (talk) 19:08, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Jcmair, you can insert your upload, File:Jim Mair.jpg, into a page using the syntax . However, I should warn you that I am nominating that image for deletion, as you claim to be one Jim Mair, presumably the subject, but the image clearly has metadata indicating the copyright belongs to Dan White. While we welcome suitable publicity photos, they must conform to our licensing policy, and that means the copyright holder (not the owner or subject) needs to release them under a free licence. If you do in fact hold copyright, please contact our OTRS team by email, and they will guide you through the licensing process. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:09, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

 • If you think the existing image is incorrect, tag it with Fact disputed.
 • Upload your version under a distinct name (there's no way to overwrite an SVG with a JPG, but this would be the right thing to do, anyway).

You may upload photos that you have created yourself as well as content created by others as long as it is within Commons' project scope and you're willing to publish it under a free license or release it into the public domain. You may only upload content created by others if the copyright holder has agreed to publication under a free license or if the content is not protected by copyright.

I recommend it only if you are uploading pictures that either are in the public domain or already have a free license explicitly granted elsewhere on the Internet; or if you have a fair understanding of copyright law and have familiarized yourself with the procedures described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 23:55, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

cannot find an previously uploaded image

Hi,

The archivist at the Univ. of Cincinnati uploaded an image of Marion Rawson, archaeologist for me to use in my wikipedia biography on Marion Rawson.

I cannot find the image of Rawson under any name. The archivist said she uploaded it with the label MarionTroy1937.jpg. Still cannot find it.

This is the info she shared with me today to help me locate the image. Please help me locate this image for my bio. Dear Hershenson Carol,

Category with an "out of project scope" description (length)

While I was categorising I suddenly came along a category with way too long description. Category:Bedford SB5 Caetano Aveiro coaches D832/4 CNV . Therefor I see the COM:PS#Excluded educational content criteria relevant. My question would be now: Should this be a article on Wikipedia? Is it relevant enough or should I put this whole text in the description of the (only) file in the category. If I'm at the categories I see an overcategorisation of this file too and like to get rid at least of this subcategory and put it in the parent category. BTW the author of this category seems to be inactive since several years. --Steinfeld-feld (talk) 19:27, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

You could put the text on the Category talk page, which means it's easy to find if anyone wants to use it. I would Google it first, just to make sure the text has not been cut and paste from something copyrighted. -- (talk) 19:30, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
I will do, seems to be a good option. I'm heading to Google then and see which results turn up. --Steinfeld-feld (talk) 20:10, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
I tested multiple sentences out of the description in quotation marks. I found a mentioning on this Flickr page but it seems like this was created later than this category. There is one reference of similar tagged Flickr images too, but I think this leads back to the same picture as mentioned here. If I can trust my judgement this wasn't a copy and paste from somewhere, the option of the category talk page looks possible. --Steinfeld-feld (talk) 20:33, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
Be bold. :-) -- (talk) 20:55, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
By now the long description is moved to Category talk:Caetano Aveiro on Bedford SB5 chassis, the category is redirected to a less specific category name. But I feel like to transform it to the way I want it to look like, I have to set up a deletion request for the old overly to this one bus tailored category. I don't know if this reaches to far or if my redirect fulfills the needs? --Steinfeld-feld (talk) 21:35, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Can't find user

Hi there,

I'd like to license the use of this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Laverne_Cox_by_Sachyn_Mital.jpg

I wanted to check with the user who uploaded this if that would be ok, but when I click on their username, it comes up that they don't exist.

Is there any way to get in touch with them about this image?

Thank you!

Ikoikotypo (talk) 03:25, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Don't click the (red) user name but the talk page link instead. --Magnus (talk) 06:55, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
Alternatively: Special:EmailUser/Sachyn. Or just follow the terms of the license described in the "Licensing" section (here: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported). --El Grafo (talk) 07:04, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
El Grafo’s suggestions seem to b more promising: The user was last time active on 28 February 2016 (in the whole Wikimedia universe). To his second point: You do not need to ask at all, as long as you tag the image according the license requirements. — Speravir – 23:51, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Monthly challenges

I want to upload to the monthly challenges, and following the guidelines. Except my image is not showing. Am I doing something wrong? Please advise, or give a simpler guide to upload it. I want to upload it from my computer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noelcmn (talk • contribs) 19:13, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

 • Not much way to know if you are doing something wrong, since you don't say what you are doing; you don't even link to the directions you say you are following! For what it's worth, you seem to have made some odd edits to Commons:Photo challenge/2017 - May - Mammals, where in a series of 3 edits you added the words "Cheetah in Addo", but I see no indication that you did anything to upload a file. - Jmabel ! talk 22:55, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Please delete photo

Hi, I upoaded this photo

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trench_Map_62b.NW_(Bellicourt)_(detail).jpg

in error and it should be deleted because I did not realise that a)it carries a non-commercial licence (which I changed when I shouldn't have) and b)I can't use any non-commercial license image on Wikipedia. I have deleted it from the Wikipedia articles it has been used in already. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daveleicuk (talk • contribs) 07:15, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel,

I find this issue totally confusing. All I know is that the map is a detail from one I downloaded from McMaster and that all their maps have an NC license. I since found this discussion on the web:

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?/topic/201540-copyright-and-trench-maps/

Dave Daveleicuk (talk) 06:14, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

I don't think the annotations rise to the level of copyright. So, the question is if there is still a copyright on the base map. It's obviously PD-1923 for the U.S., and most likely either PD-UKGov or Anonymous-EU for the UK, but I can't see the original map to see if the author was identified. The library would not really have a copyright claim -- they may be trying to claim copyright on the scan itself, but Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag is our policy on that. If the user is worried about potentially violating a terms-of-use of the website, or simply wants to respect the library's wishes anyways even if they don't have any actual copyright control over it, we shouldn't force the uploader to have their name on it, but I don't see a reason why it couldn't be re-uploaded by someone else. Carl Lindberg (talk) 21:13, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi,

I'd be very happy to use the file in the article I originally uploaded it for, if it is deemed not to violate Wikipedia usage (and as long as some lawyer isn't going to come looking for me!). McMaster have uploaded very large files of the trench maps in their collection. When they stipulate non-commercial, I presume it is because they don't want anyone to use the very high-resolution files they have generously uploaded, in a commercial operation. I can't see that the file size I've uploaded, which is only a small detail, would be much use commercially in any case and I suppose it is unlikely that McMaster will be too concerned about it. By the way, McMaster do identify the officer who annotated the map and the map can be viewed on their website:

http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A4350/-/collection

Interestingly, I've just realised that they include a link to Wikipedia on this page, so maybe they would be (should be) O.K. about the map being used on W. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daveleicuk (talk • contribs) 11:42, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikimapia copyright Policy's - Photos

Hello! In its photo policy, the wikimapia site informs that "1. By uploading a photo to Wikimapia, you acknowledge and agree it is freely available for commercial and non-commercial use under Creative Commons license Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA)" (see: http://wikimapia.org/docs/Photos). Does this mean that we can download all the photos that are there in commons? I ask you to analyze these three pictures: http://wikimapia.org/14057371/pt/Cinema-Multiplex-Pantanal . Thanks!!!! Ajmcbarreto (talk) 00:09, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Yes, it is possible to upload all of them to Commons. Ruslik (talk) 13:52, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

So I'm making a list of all potato chips sorts by a swedish company

I need to take the images of each sorts bag. However these images aren't mine. Am I still allowed to upload them? --Konlon15 (talk) 17:48, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Konlon15: short answer, no. Even if you had taken the images yourself, or they were freely licensed, the graphic design on the bags is a copyrightable work, and so any photo of them would be a derivative of that copyrighted work, and thus they would not be allowed here unless that design were either released freely or public domain for some reason (too simple, too old, etc). -mattbuck (Talk) 17:49, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

What if they're uploaded on their website?--Konlon15 (talk) 17:52, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

@Konlon15: only if the images are explicitly published there under a free licence (which is rare on commercial sites). Otherwise the answer is doubly “no”, because both the company’s packaging and the photographs themselves will be protected.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:57, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Uploading an image

I am not an experienced Wikipedia user so I was looking for simple step-by-step instructions for uploading images. For example I want to upload an image to the page for Max Minghella: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Minghella

The image I have was given my to my the copyright holder (Hulu) and approved for use on Wikipedia. Can you tell me how I properly upload the image and what type of license I need to cite? There are multiple places to upload images and so many different attributions/copyright types that I am very confused.

Please let me know - thank you! --42W Digi (talk) 18:26, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

@42W Digi: approval “for use on Wikipedia” is not sufficient, whether you upload it directly there or here on Commons, because we only want media that are free for anyone to use anywhere. The Licensing page outlines the requirements; if you’re uncertain which to use we generally recommend a CC-BY-SA. Please see COM:OTRS for instructions on submitting permissions; there you will also find a sample consent letter for the owner (who BTW is usually the photographer, not the subject) to send in. Alternatively, if the image has not been published elsewhere and the photographer is willing to register here & upload the image as “own work“ (with any free licence), no further formalities are usually required.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:18, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

-Thank you @Odysseus1479. The rights holder of the image is not the photographer in this case, it is the company Hulu. Do I still need the photographer's permission or do I need Hulu's permission? Hulu have now approved usage for the image as per the terms above (fine to use anywhere by anyone). So if I get a letter from them proving this, is that sufficient? Or do I need — Preceding unsigned comment added by 42W Digi (talk • contribs) 22:14, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

 • If Hulu is indeed the rights-holder, it would be their permission needed, not the photographer. As Odysseus1479 said, see COM:OTRS for how they need to provide that permission if they haven't already published the image with a clear statement of a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 22:22, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
It would probably help smooth processing if the Hulu representative indicates briefly how they acquired the rights (e.g. work for hire by a staff photographer, commissioned work under exclusive contract). If going the OTRS route it’s also best if the permission letter comes directly from a corporate e-mail account.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:21, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Uploading Military Unit Insignia

I am trying to update the page for the 56th Air Refueling Squadron. One of the items that is out of date is the unit patch. Now I do not own the new patch, noone does (or if you look at it another way, every American taxpayer does). Can I still upload it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hofenstein (talk • contribs) 15:05, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

 1. Ownership of the physical item is completely irrelevant, this is strictly a matter of intellectual property rights.
 2. I'm guessing that the image in question would fall under PD-USGov, or possibly something more specific.
 3. You say you are trying to update a page. I'm guessing that is a Wikipedia page. Do be careful to upload under a new file name (don't overwrite any existing image file page) and then change the Wikipedia article to refer to your new image. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

File usage does not show up on the real file when using a thumbnail

thumbnail links to animation
If one uses a thumbnail to link to a picture or an animation:

instead of using the automatically resized thumbnails, who do not always give the best results with animations, the file usage does not show up on the file's site. To keep track of the sites using the animation it is necessary to check the file usage of the thumbnail (which is what I did when I manually created a "#Usage in Wikipedia Articles"-section, while the original "#filelinks-section is empty). Since I have only a few animations where it is necessary to link from an extra thumbnail file it is easy for me to keep track of the file usage by checking the usage of the thumbnails, but I think it would be better if the software could check that automatically. I suggest to add the rule that the file usage also counts if a file is linked like in the pseudocode above or like shown on the right (real code click here).

--Tyrus C (talk) 03:48, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Works nowadays are automatically protected by copyright, either you claim it or not. From what you are saying here, it seems the logo still non-free and copyrighted. Unless the school released the logo under a free license or to the public domain, it will not be accepted here on Commons. Poké95 06:22, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

As for zh:File:Saint Louis School logo.png, that file is locally hosted on the Chinese language Wikipedia as non-free content with a fair use rationale. Fair use depends on the specific context in which a work is used. Commons is a general-purpose media repository hosting content without a specific context. Therefore, fair use cannot be invoked here. Fair use content must always be locally uploaded to the project on which you intend to use it (if the project allows it; different projects have different policies). Uploading photo from Flickr

Hi. I wish to upload the following photo from the World Economic Forum (WEF) page on Flikr -- photo ID 8163796246; https://www.flickr.com/photos/worldeconomicforum/8163796246/in/dateposted/ -- to Wikimedia Commons. I have WRITTEN permission from the WEF to use the photo on a Wikipedia submission I am currently developing. In an email, they said: "You are free to use this photo under the creative commons licence. It is our photo taken by our official photographer. We just ask that you credit the World Economic Forum." However, Wikimedia Commons' system will not accept the photo because the photo on Flickr is tagged as “CC-BY-NC-SA", when it should be tagged “CC-BY-SA” and as yet the WEF hasn't reset the tag. WEF staff are very busy and I am hesitant to bother them further. Can you recommend some work-around that will allow me to upload the image to Wikimedia Commons? Thank you, and best regards, IanIan.fraser1 (talk) 16:14, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Just to be clear: Written permissions are of no use if they're wikipediaonly or only cover non-free licenses (such as noncommercial ones). I'm sure they are indeed busy, but if they had the time to reply to you, they'd have the time to click a few buttons on Flickr to change the license. It seems their decision to prohibit commercial use is quite deliberate. And no, there is no workaround for cases where the copyright holder isn't willing to release their work under a free license. Using Wikipedia images

I am contemplating making and selling greeting cards using images (almost exclusively the portraits which accompany "bios" of famous people) from Wikipedia. I have read through a great deal of Wikipedia's explanations of copyright issues, but I have to admit I am still not sure whether I can use these images without violating copyrights.

I am assuming that any images for which copyright has lapsed are moot. Are there any other rules (such as the Millennial Copy Right Act or the Fair Use concept) which would allow me to avoid contacting the original owner of the copyright?

Thank you,

Richard Urmston <email> — Preceding unsigned comment added by Urmston60 (talk • contribs) 17:03, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Richard! If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into to avoid falling victim to phishing), you'll notice that you're not on Wikipedia but Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. With that in mind, see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. As explained there, all content here is (supposed to be) free. (Unfortunately, a lot of people upload copyright violations, and we don't catch all of them.) Unlike English Wikipedia (for example), we don't allow uploading of non-free fair use content. I want to change my animation, but the change would contradict the title

I created an animation of a cyclic cellular automaton being run for 700 generations (frames). However, after uploading that file I realised that this sequence actually continues evolving until about 1194 generations. Since the title of the file I uploaded contains "for 700 generations", I'm unsure how to proceed. Should the old file be moved to a new name and then modified? Should the version with more generations be uploaded as a seperate file? If so, should the old one be deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Illiteration (talk • contribs) 23:23, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Or, if you just wish to have the file renamed, tag it with . You can find the rationale numbers and further information at "Commons:File renaming". — SMUconlaw (talk) 05:34, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

 • You don't say what country. Most countries grant copyright for life plus 70 years, so there is a very good chance that something from the 1930s is still copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 03:04, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

How delete audio file

we are uploading audio files for pa.wiktionary.org on wikimedia commons. Some files uploaded with wrong code. So we want delete approximate 250 files. So now what we do? please Help.--Stalinjeet (talk) 13:49, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

 • Not sure what you mean by "the wrong code" so not sure if deletion is actually the right solution. Could you be more clear about what's wrong and give at least one example? - Jmabel ! talk 15:45, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
 • We are uploading audio file with 'pa' code like- 'Pa-ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg'. But in some files we miss 'pa' code. Files uploaded with only this type of tittle 'ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg'. We want delete these type of files.--Stalinjeet (talk) 01:44, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Link service: File:Pa-ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg and File:ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg. Oops, the latter file does not exist.
Please request the renaming with rationale "To harmonize the file names of a set of videos"; read Commons:File renaming. — Speravir – 01:04, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Which is to say: the solution is not deletion. If you don't have filemover privileges yourself, tag them appropriately using Rename and they will be moved. - Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Deletion

I had uploaded several files on Wikimedia on the last week, but there is a delay with permission, so I guess I must delete them, but don't know how. I hope there will be no sanctions against me for copyright violation as I hadn't done it expressly. John Francis Templeson (talk) 21:44, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

@John Francis Templeson: Eight of them are ripe for deletion per your user talk page. If you want to save them, please either detail the permission or send evidence of it via OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ 04:19, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Conversely, if you believe deletion is appropriate, as the uploader you should weigh in and say so in the relevant deletion discussions. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Overwrite video with new version

I uploaded a set of videos. The original versions of these videos had an audio error, making the voices sound strange. I later got corrected videos with correct audio. I am overwriting the old videos with the new ones, so that users will only access the ones with good audio.

My overwriting the content seems like the right thing to do by Commons:Overwriting existing files. Commons preserves the old files, which seems fine if that is how things work. It does mean about 200mb of useless video are kept, which I think nowadays is not enough to matter, but I thought I would check in here to confirm. Is it correct that old overwriten files which should never be used should still remain in Commons, and that there is no way to designate them as trash? See examples -

Thanks, Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:32, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

I would overwrite them. Correcting mistakes or improving transcoding quality in a non-controversial way, is a good overwriting rationale. If superseded and separate files, I would put the old versions up for speedy, someone can challenge and convert to a DR if they feel it needs more discussion. Policy is not unambiguous as it is impossible to preempt all situations. -- (talk) 16:44, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

That seems reasonable. I will overwrite. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:50, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

SVG not rendered correctly

Hi! I just uploaded File:Arbre généalogique Antigone.svg. It looks perfectly both in Inkscape and in Firefox (the uploaded version), and was also good on the upload page (the thumbnail in the “source file” box), but the texts somehow loose their x coordinates. It’s certainly a bug in Commons, but can it be worked around without fixing the thumbnail software? --Tacsipacsi (talk) 07:19, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Uploading an author's promotional picture

I wanted to add a picture of Alex Tizon to his Wikipedia article. His website had one, but it had lapsed and is now archived here. From reading Wikipedia's guidelines, promotional images are allowed. However, in using the upload wizard here, I was not able to find an equivalent category.

Am I allowed to upload a promotional photo and how should I tag it in the wizard?

--KNHaw (talk) 00:10, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

KNHaw, Commons accepts 100% *free* items. Copyrighted items *cannot* be uploaded unless the person releases permission. Try and contact him to send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. MechQuester (talk) 03:44, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

OK. Thanks. I will try but given that it's an abandoned site and that the owner passed away last month anyways, I am doubtful.
Is there any ongoing effort to correct the Wikipedia guidelines so they fall in line with Wikicommons?
--KNHaw (talk) 16:33, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Absolutely not. Each language-specific Wikipedia is fully permitted to decide to host non-free images that would not be eligible for Commons, and to set its own policies for that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

how to get a wikimedia photo on to a wikipedia page

My name is Gayle McLaughlin. I have a wikipedia page which someone else created, but I am making some edits. I would like to replace the main photo near the top of the page. If you click the 'edit' link at the top of the page you will see 'Infobox officeholder' at the beginning of the editing window. It has a parameter called 'image'. This is the name of the image that is shown. Just replace its value with 'Original_grey_background_-_Copy_(2)light_edited-3.jpg'. Ruslik (talk) 11:47, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Artist estate licensing images of deceased painter's paintings

I am writing on behalf of the Jon Schueler Artist Estate. While Jon died in 1992, the estate owns all rights to the images of his work. I would like to give license to include two images of his paintings in the commons. What license do I need to use, and how can I label it so it is clear that it is the legal estate submitting those images, and not some third party, so they don't get deleted? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msalvesen (talk • contribs) 18:21, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Commons accepts only free licenses, i.e. which permit anyone to use and modify the work, even for commercial purpose. The recommended license is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0). You have to state that you are the copyright holder in an email sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Please state clearly what images you publish under the free license, e.g. by uploading them first and marking them with the OTRS pending template, then simply copying the URLs into the email. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:30, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Using photos of paintings

I would like to add some photos of paintings made by artist who died in 2003. Those pictures are recently published on the webpage of his family. They are willing to give me the permission to upload their original photos on Wikimedia Commons. I need an opinion if it is ok regarding copyrights and what are the options? Falcon Bos (talk) 21:16, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Commons accepts only free licenses, i.e. which permit anyone to use and modify the work, even for commercial purpose. The recommended license is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0). If they are willing to grant such a license, there are two ways to communicate this:
 1. They can state that they are the copyright holder in an email sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (appropriate content for the email is described at COM:OTRS). They should state clearly what images you publish under the free license; typically, the simplest way to do this is by uploading them first and marking them with the OTRS pending template, then simply copying the URLs into the email. Another alternative is to attach copies of the images to the email.
 2. Given that the images are already on the web page of his family, they can indicate the license (e.g. CC BY-SA 4.0) there. Then anyone could upload to Commons, citing that web page as the source.
In this case, I think the second should be simpler. It also spares the backlogged OTRS team some work. - Jmabel ! talk 22:24, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Adding image resolution

I want to be able to upload a new version of an image in a higher resolution, but I can't figure out how. I want the lower resolution image to be the default one, but also have the higher resolution one so that I can use it when I need to. This is for the logo of the Old Norse Wikipedia in Incubator. For example, the Ancient Greek logo has the 135x135 image as the default image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-grc.svg There is also the option to view higher resolution versions of the image. I would like to be able to do the same thing with the Norse logo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-non.png Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ScriptorHistoriae (talk • contribs) 01:08, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

 • Please always upload the highest resolution available. Downsampling is performed automatically to get lower resolutions as needed. - Jmabel ! talk 02:10, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. I uploaded the highest resolution, but the preview isn't the right size. It would be best if it showed it at 135x155 instead of 522×599. I also posted the wrong link:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-non.svg
On the Ancient Greek logo, it says that the original file is 135x155, which is why I'm confused about how to get the right preview size. --ScriptorHistoriae (talk) 19:54, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Kodak 3A Camera before 1917

Hi

I have just uploaded 2 photographs on my late aunts Kodak 3A Camera from before 1917.

It looks like there were several versions of the Kodak 3A, and I am not shore which one I have.

The versions of the Kodak 3A I have seen on you-tub, are the metal versions with rounded edges.

The one in my position is made of wood.

The photos were taken on my Canon M5, photographic details embedded in the photos ie Camera settings, serial # etc..

I do not know which Kodak 3A this camera is.

Hope you can use the photo's.

Hello,

I uploaded the project logo of Maharashtra Samruddhi Corridor on its official Wikipedia Page. Days later I received a notice regarding deletion and it states like this :

Thanks for uploading File:MSRDC Top Logo 0 0.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear. If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Following are questions :-

How to include copyright tag and where it should be placed?

What is the possible solution for it to get approved? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mahasamruddhimahamarg (talk • contribs) 07:56, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

You should have probably added Pd-textlogo to it. Ruslik (talk) 13:23, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

How do I delete two photos?

I've uploaded two flower images which I now believe have the wrong names. I don't know the right names, so how can I delete the images? the images are File:Camellia rosmannii RBG Melbourne 14-4-2017.jpg and File:Camellia rosmanii RBG Melbourne 10 April 20. Erictimewell (talk) 00:01, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Well, Jmabel, you could rename them simply as camellias, but it's a nearly useless description because it's so vague. As soon as I have identified the subject of my photos correctly I intend to resumbit them precisely described. But if you insist I'll just expand your description of them as "Camellias". Thanks for your quick response. Erictimewell (talk) 06:13, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Copyright infringement

I recently uploaded a colourised photograph of a WWII German officer that was rejected on grounds of infringement. I would like to avoid this happening again but feel my colourised photos could enhance the quality of the entries. I feel that I could overcome this by simply signing away any claim to the original author. I expect no reward or recognition. I am in effect simply colourising their work for free.

Please advise.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Compact Jam (talk • contribs) 20:39, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

@Compact Jam: I presume this refers to COM:Deletion requests/File:Erhler-version-2.jpg. The problem wasn’t with your colorization per se, or your credit for the modification, rather that the original image was apparently protected by copyright. In order for a derivative work to be free, the original must be free to start with, either in the public domain or released under a licence that allows modification. It might be best to upload the source image first, with appropriate info concerning its provenance and copyright status, and then upload your derivative version under another filename (with a link to the original—see Derived from). If in any doubt concerning the copyright, try posting at COM:VPC for advice, with a link to the original source, before uploading, or your work could go to waste. A lot of WWII images are still copyrighted because the protection usually persists for 70 years after the photographer’s death, and where the photographer is unknown the law generally provides a large ‘safety margin’ (depending on the country of origin), in effect presuming the author may have survived for 25 to 50 years after taking the picture.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:18, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Correction of mistake in description

Hi, greetings from Polish Wikipedia. We recently had a little discussion https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Zg%C5%82o%C5%9B_b%C5%82%C4%85d_w_artykule#.C5.9Awistunka_g.C3.B3rska about this photo: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Phybon.jpg The bird was identified as Phylloscopus bonelli and used as such on numerous Wiki pages (including Polish), and I doubt it is this species. (Reason: different head markings. Ph. bonelli should have pale lores and eye-ring unbroken by eye-stripe, whereas bird on the photo has strong eye-stripe which crosses eye-ring and reaches to lore). I would propose description of this photo "Phylloscopus sp.". I wrote to author of the photo but he seems not to be active on Wiki anymore. What can I do next? Help please :) (I don't quite know how to change descriptions, file names etc on commons) Wireonek (talk) 08:07, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

In its description on Commons it is actually identified as Phylloscopus trochilus. Ruslik (talk) 12:03, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: Where do you see that?   — Jeff G. ツ 20:02, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
It is called 'Pouillot fitis' and the link leads to frwiki where is explained that the Latin name is Phylloscopus trochilus. Ruslik (talk) 04:51, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
So let's rename it File:Phylloscopus trochilus, Tarn, Midi-Pyrénées, France.jpg.   — Jeff G. ツ 05:50, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Wireonek: What do you mean by the "sp." portion of "Phylloscopus sp."?   — Jeff G. ツ 20:14, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

@Ruslik0: , indeed it is, I don't know why I hadn't noticed that. However, it is categorized as Ph. bonelli, file name suggests bonelli and wikipedias use it as bonelli. I can replace the photos in articles (there are other pictures of Ph.bonelli on commons) but if somebody could change name as @Jeff G.: suggests, and delete category "Phylloscopus bonelli" it would be great. @Jeff G.: sp = species. Phylloscopus sp. means that the bird belong to genus Phylloscopus but we do not determine which species in that genus. I suggested such identification because this genus is quite tricky in identification on the basis of photos only. Some species, as Ph. trochilus and Ph. collybita, are best separated on the basis of song, and from some photos are not possible to identify for sure. On the discussed photo it can well be Ph. trochilus but I can't exclude e.g. Ph. ibericus (I don't say that somebody more experienced with this genus can id this bird for sure, I only say I can't that :) ). Wireonek (talk) 07:42, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

I renamed the files and updated the description. I do not think that we should delete any categories. Ruslik (talk) 12:55, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: thanks. As to categories: the file shouldn't be in category "Phylloscopus bonelli". https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Phylloscopus_bonelli Wireonek (talk) 16:21, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Now I see that @Kookaburra 81: wrote under the photo: "File renaming criterion #1: At the original uploader’s request. It's bonelli and not trochilus !" Could we discuss the question of species of bird on the photo, then? I wrote above why I think it can't be bonelli but I'm open to discussion, especially with photo's author. Kookaburra 81, could you please provide traits which show that it's bonelli? Why head marking is so different from described in literature and visible on other photos (e.g. from files here: http://www.javierblasco.arrakis.es/families.htm ) In the meantime I replaced the photo on a few Wikipedia pages with another picture of Ph.bonelli. Wireonek (talk) 17:17, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

@Wireonek, Ruslik0, and Kookaburra 81: As a compromise, how about restricting the name, description, and category to genus Phylloscopus?   — Jeff G. ツ 17:28, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I proposed such description from the beginning, as I don't feel that I can tell which species is that bird (only that it is not bonelli, in my opinion), and for me it would be perfectly fine. However, now that @Kookaburra 81: commented on the photo, I would like to wait for his arguments for his identification. I admit that maybe I posted here too early after leaving message on his discussion page, but in fact I was pretty sure he does not visit Wikipedia any more because he had last edits from 2014 (for which assumption I am sorry) Wireonek (talk) 17:35, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Wireonek: That assumption was valid, given that user's inactivity on all WMF projects.   — Jeff G. ツ 17:42, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Sorry that I moved the picture before this discussion came to an end. Due to it is not linked from here directly, I havn't noticed that there are doubts about the bird. The request was initiated by the original uploader and there was no reason for me to believe it could mess up something. Please feel free to ignore the move in case it was wrong and put it to a correct filename. I will not put this page on my watchlist, in the unlikely case of any need to contact me, please give me a ping or use my user talk. Greetings. --Druschba 4 (talk) 18:50, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello, first of all, excuse me for my bad English. Moreover it is true that I rarely go on wiki, because I find it very complex to use. Concerning the image of the phylloscopus. It is true that the image was taken long ago .... But bonelli is very common with me and trochilus only passing in the spring and especially in the autumn. Of course, the most characteristic to differentiate them is the singing completely different, especially as trochilus is a rather talkative bird that is often heard in migration. It is astonishing that at the time I was wrong ... but everything is possible .... It is true that the head is not characteristic, but the legs and especially the feet are much less clear ( Yellow) than trochilus. I think in the meantime you can if you prefer to put it in phyloscopus sp. I have a lot of recent images, maybe more caracteristic bonelli ... photographed even if only today ... I suggest you post as soon as possible and if I remember how to do, A more typical image of this species — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kookaburra 81 (talk • contribs) 19:28, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Renominate an FP for delisting

I just now began the process of requesting the de-FPing of File:Chicken February 2009-1.jpg, but someone already tried that; Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Chicken February 2009-1.jpg failed, partly because several users deemed that the time period since promotion (four months) was too soon to request removal. Should I create a second removal page, or does this request go at the bottom of the first one, or what? Nyttend (talk) 05:31, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Wiki loves Earth photo comp

Hi - I uploaded at least a dozen photos however I can only find one that has been recorded. How do I find proof for the other images that I uploaded? Cheers Kalyi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kalyi1 (talk • contribs) 08:57, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

I don't know how you uploaded them, but if you add "" to the bottom of each file, then that file should all show up. BTW, I suggest that you read Project_scope#Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose. For example, your image File:View from my brother's place 3.jpg is not particularly educational - we don't know exactly who you are, we don't know who your brother is (neither of which are particularly important), but you do need to tell us why the view from your brother's place is significant, preferably with the geographical coordinates of where the photo was taken. You then need to add more realistic categories. Martinvl (talk) 09:20, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
You don't need and shouldn't add that category. Better just add the template au, the image will then automagically appear in the Australian WLE category. Or simply use the campain's upload wizard. --Magnus (talk) 10:17, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Uploaded Jpg picture files show up only when logged-in or searched.

Dear Wikimedia,

(1) I had uploaded three jpg picture files (a, b, c).

(2) I would like the pictures to be easily available to anyone (even when they are not logged in) when they click on 'Wikimedia Commons has media related to 'topic/category at the bottom of the Wikepedia page on that topic/category. However, only one picture (a) is visible and the other two of the pictures (b and c) cannot be seen in the thumbnails. The two thumbnails and pictures (b and c) show up only when I am logged-in or when I search Wikimedia Commons for that topic/category.

(3) (b and c) file sizes are smaller than the successful picture (a). I used the Upload Wizard in a straight-forward manner and chose the topic/category from the wizard's drop-down list. (4) How can I enable pictures (b and c) to be visible to anyone who is browsing even when they are not logged-in. (5) Thank you for your time. I was not able to find the answers in the faqs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dinodomo (talk • contribs) 14:37, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

How to delete a picture from Wikipedia Commons?

I uploaded an image claiming that it was my original picture, but it is some one else's. Essentially, I want to either delete it (which upload wizard isn't letting me do) or be able to reupload it as someone elses (it won't let me upload it without deleting the first one I uploaded) to give credit to the rightful owner of the image. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.39.25.130 (talk) 16:30, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Please log in the username you used to upload the picture so we can confirm that you want to delete it. You may also wish to tag the image with a speedy template Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 22:52, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
But, assuming the image is either public domain or free-licensed, usually needing to correct information about a picture is not a reason to delete it. Just edit the information accordingly. Of course, if someone else holds the copyright and hasn't granted a free license, it shouldn't be here at all, and should be deleted (and not re-uploaded). - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Public art

The Upload your own work page says: "...these are not permitted, so don't upload them! ... Photographs of art, statues ...". The prohibition seems excessively broad. Does it include permanent statues and arguably artistic fountains in a public park? Does it apply to photos of stone carvings permanently attached to the exterior of a building visible to the public? Does it apply to photos of artfully designed buildings? What about public art in a subway station? TheTrolleyPole (talk) 23:57, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

In Canada it’s fine to publish derivatives of three-dimensional objects that are permanently located in public places. That includes buildings, sculptures, &c. but not murals or posters. See COM:FOP#Canada.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:40, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer. Are there exceptions to the prohibition on photos of murals? Commons already has a photo of a famous mural in Toronto on a building overlooking a public park. TheTrolleyPole (talk) 01:07, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
That may have slipped through the cracks as a case of ‘Flickrwashing‘ (not necessarily deliberate), but it depends on the mural’s copyright status. The only exceptions of which I’m aware would be where the mural itself has been freely licensed by the artist, its copyright has expired, or it was uncopyrightable (too simple or non-creative) in the first place.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:21, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Images of old newspapers

Hello! Are old newspapers still under copyright or they can be uploaded on commons? In particular, it is possible to upload these images (one and two) of newspapers articles published in the US in 1935-1936? If so, which licence should I use? Thank you, --Postcrosser (talk) 11:59, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

 • As far as I know, any non-New-York U.S. paper from that era should qualify for PD-US-not renewed. The second one is clearly from Philadelphia, so should be OK. For the first one you'd have to pin down that it's not one of the New York papers that did renew their copyrights. - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you! I can't be sure the first newspaper wasn't from NY, so I'll upload just the second from Philadelphia --Postcrosser (talk) 08:25, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

How often has an image been used on the web outside Wikimedia/Wikipedia

Good morning all, I wondered whether there was a way to discover how often an image from Wikimedia commons has been used on the web outside Wikipedia? An image I posted has been posted recently on Facebook by someone else as part of a very interesting discussion and I wondered if I could find other places in which the image had been used and potentially commented on? Thank you in advance for assistance! Jo --Jo Clements (talk) 10:00, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

I don’t know about general tools, but you can find where an image appears using Google Images—just paste the Commons image URL (of the file itself, not the description page) to the “Search by image” box. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:08, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

I can only confirm that this is broken. It's not possible to collapse the Creative Commons options, and it's not possible to expand any of the other sections. You should be able to Special:Upload as an alternative, but I'm guessing we're going to have even more files with bogus CC licenses until the default form is repaired. Missing sidebar links

I used to have links like "Copyright violation" and "Nominate for deletion" appear in my sidebar. If I'm not mistaken, those links were enabled via a plugin, but now they don't appear on pages in the File namespace. "Copyright violation" doesn't appear at all, while "Nominate for deletion" appears on every page except the File namespace pages. Why is that? I believe the gadget that's malfunctioning could be "Quick Delete" (not AjaxQuickDelete), but I'm not familiar enough with the plugin or gadgets in general to be sure. Re-uploading file for OTRS

I've uploaded a file (Hartmut Oschkinat SFB1078.jpg) with the tag OTRS:pending, but did not manage to get the OTRS resolved due to cultural differences (photo was taken by person A, licensed to institute B -- as far as I know institute B has complete rights, and person C contacted institute B to obtain the photo for upload. Last time person C was unwilling to prolong contact with institute B to go through with OTRS). Now the photo has been deleted, but I have managed to persuade person C to pass on the contact to institute B so that I can resolve the OTRS myself. Is there a way to reinstate the file so that when the person at institute B is going through the OTRS generator, they can put "Hartmut Oschkinat SFB1078.jpg" as the Commons file name at step 2 out of 5? Or is it preferable that the person at institute B just attach the file to the email? I want to make this process as easy as possible as the other people are not native English speakers. Thanks! Selkie upsilon (talk) 14:18, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

 • If you want the image restored for this purpose, the place to go is Commons:Undeletion requests, but I'd guess you probably will be turned down.
 • They can refer to "Hartmut Oschkinat SFB1078.jpg" whether it is currently online or not. But, yes, if it's not currently online, it might be less ambiguous if they attach a file (or a URL if it is online elsewhere). - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. I will get them to include the file in the email. There is an URL with the file, but that version is only 46 kB, whereas the fullsized version that they provided is 2.2MB. --Selkie upsilon (talk) 21:12, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

I received a message, User talk:Castillo blanco#Your VFC installation method is deprecated, telling that I should switch to a new version of VFC. I cannot enable it with the link in the message. In the first pop-up I can click 'yes', but in the second pop-up, where I am asked to confirm, the 'yes' button remains grey and the pop-up disappears after a few seconds. Is there a different way to install the new version of VFC? I cannot find it in my preferences as suggested by the message. Castillo blanco (talk) 05:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Meanwhile I found the answer. Castillo blanco (talk) 06:14, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
You should not do that if there is other way to achieve the same effect. User JavaScript is the worst way of enabling things as these are usually unmaintained and break over the time. You can enable VFC in your preferences and remove that line from your JavaScript, otherwise it can’t be guaranteed that it will work in the future (also enabling gadgets in the official way means a slightly better performance). --Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:05, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
I can't figure out the name of the gadget to enable VTC in your preferences. What is the exact name of that gadget? I've deleted my commons js script but I have the same problem as the OP above. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 14:03, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I just noticed that it’s available only for autopatrollers (it’s called VisualFileChange in the list so it’s not hard to find—if it’s available for you…). This setting should be on purpose: VFC is for batch tasks and thus creates a large backlog for the patrollers if the user isn’t autopatrolled. Then I suggest you first contribute to Commons in another way and after some time you can request autopatrolled right. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:18, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Overwriting an image

This question is concerning File:Salt Lake City montage 19 July 2011.jpg. About five years after the collage was created, an editor changed one of the images being used, and uploaded the new collage, writing the original. I felt the change was too major and went against Commons:Overwriting existing files. I believe the new version of the collage should have been uploaded as a new file, not an overwrite. I reverted the change, but the editor in question once again replaced the image. Besides being a completely new photo, the replacement photo is much newer than the creation date of 19 July 2011 used in the collage's title. The editor's reasoning for changing the image is that the new one is a "far superior night shot." Incidentally the photographer and editor seem to be one in the same. I don't wish to start an edit war, but am I justified in reverting back to the original image? The other editor is of course welcome to upload their new version as a new file. Thanks for the help. --Beneathtimp (talk) 02:07, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Tif conversion bot?

Is there a way to semi-automatically mark tif files for conversion to a... more usable format? I say this because User:ETH-Bibliothek is uploading a lot of pretty quality 19th Century lithographs that need homes on articles, but I know tif is less than ideal for use on Wikipedia, even if it streamlines batch uploading of metric tons of images on the front end. I... really didn't even notice the format until I went to go copping away wit Crop Tool and apparently it's not supported. But... really downloading each image and manually converting them to another format is going to be a monster. TimothyJosephWood 14:37, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Every file is automatically converted to JPGs. Every file usage shows a (usually scaled down) JPG. You even have a JPG in full resolution, for example on File:ETH-BIB-Amsler-Laffon, Jakob (1823-1912)-Portrait-Portr 03571.tif click the link 2,604 × 3,840 pixels under the picture. --Magnus (talk) 14:46, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
So... I guess my question is how do I get that auto-generated jpg and Crop Tool to talk to each other, so I can crop and use the jpg version as if it was a file originally uploaded as a jpg with its own information page, and then insert in an article using [[File:Somethingsomething.jpg|thumb...? The link under the resolution gives me a nice preview of the alternate file format version, but it doesn't let me "treat" it as if it was a stand alone image. TimothyJosephWood 14:52, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Ok, I have to admit that using crop tool with TIFFs und auto-generated JPGs isn't currently possible. If you really need to crop an image, downloading + cropping + reuploading (with a new filename) is the way to go. Maybe you can ask for TIFF cropping ability...? --Magnus (talk) 15:13, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Category:Sadness TimothyJosephWood 15:24, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
It's fairly easy to write a script to do this, i.e. run through a category and create a jpeg for every TIFF where a jpeg with a matching ID or source link does not exist; I know because I have done exactly this for some of my past uploads. However I'd rather that was done by @ETH-Bibliothek: directly rather than another party poking at it. It does mean uploading new locally saved jpegs, though this could happen in labs. -- (talk) 19:55, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Well, for now I guess I'm doing it manually. I don't have near the expertise to even understand how little I understand about how to do it with computer code magic. But... you know... They only have 17,000 uploads. So I should be done some time in about a hundred years. TimothyJosephWood 20:19, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Really, the silly thing is that the jpg formatted files already exist. We just need a bot to give them their own information page and copy basically everything over. TimothyJosephWood 22:37, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
