Please categorize your images[edit]

The appropriate category for Rosa cultivars like this is Category:Rosa cultivars! -- Ies (talk) 07:04, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Erictimewell!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello Erictimewell,
I changed your last correction on Rosa cultivars R back, as 'Rotilla' is listed as a synonym on the galery page - if you think that that's not enough, you could create a redirect by writing

;redirect: Rosa 'Rotilia'

on the page Rosa 'Rotilla'.
regards, Anna

Lovely rose pictures[edit]

Hello Eric Timewell,
As I try to help maintaining the rose cultivar galleries, I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your lovely rose pictures and especially your detailed descriptions! At the moment, I'm especially happy I found your picture of 'Charlotte Armstrong', which enabled me to finally create the corresponding gallery, as 'Charlotte Armstrong' is listed as parent cultivar in about 10 galleries...
I'm looking forward to seeing your next pictures! ;->
Anna reg (talk) 21:59, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Anna, thank you. We've had to admit on the Nieuwesteeg website that photos are essential to allow users to identify the roses; therefore every rose must have its photo and every photo must have its detailed caption. Sometimes the detail is there because the identity of many older roses is disputed. Yes, there will be many more rose photos to come, including a much better one, funnily enough, of 'Charlotte Armstrong'. Erictimewell (talk) 22:28, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great! I'll keep an eye out for them! Anna reg (talk) 00:39, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have a question concerning the rose pictures from Margaret Furness - as they are included in the English article 'Nieuwesteeg Heritage Rose Garden', I assumed that the photos were also taken there. Is that correct? (Otherwise I should remove the category Nieuwesteeg Heritage Rose Garden from those pictures...)
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 09:06, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Anna, no, Margaret Furness's photos were not taken in the Nieuwesteeg garden. But the roses she has photographed are, obviously. Erictimewell (talk) 01:27, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clearing that up! I'll remove the category, as the commons category should show pictures taken in that place - not the rose cultivars existing there... I take it, you don't know where she took her photos (but probably still in Australia)? Anna reg (talk) 09:21, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked all rose pictures I categorized into NHRG and there are three more pictures without location: , and . I changed the category to Roses in Australia, but perhaps you know more? Anna reg (talk) 11:14, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Anna, the first of those photos, Midnight Sun, was photographed at NHRG, as was the third, Lady Edgeworth David. The middle photo, Frau Karl Druschki, was taken at the Victoria State Rose Garden, Werribee Park, Victoria. The Margaret Furness photos were certainly taken in Australia, 90 per cent likely at the David Ruston Collection in Renmark, SA — since then renamed the Australian National Collection. Note a certain pretentiousness in naming things here.

Since we wrote last, I've started a Wikipedia site for the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden in Bulla, Victoria. It has itself only one photo so far, but there are going to be many from the same garden added to the List of Alister Clark Roses, set up as a link. This may or may not interest you. Erictimewell (talk) 06:19, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just added your information as Photographed in... in the File description of the roses and changed the categories. As to the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden - as soon as there are several photographs (more then 5 to 10) from one rose garden it is a good idea too create a category. I'll do that now while adding the pictures you uploaded yesterday to galleries... Anna reg (talk) 09:44, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again, Anna. Thanks for your support. For the time being the link from the Memorial Garden Wikipedia page to Wikimedia Commons is an excellent way of giving people access to relevant photos. Nine photos are far too small a proportion of the 67 in the garden to allow the photos to carry information about them all. I expect it to take me a month to take photos of the Memorial Garden and put them into some form of array on the Garden's Wikipedia page.

One photo needs to be corrected, if that is the word. File:Kitty Kininmonth ACMG 17-11-2013 0242.jpg should be rotated counter-clockwise 90° and I don't know how to do it. Can you tell me how? Erictimewell (talk) 02:59, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am just sorting through all those rose pictures you uploaded in the last week(s), as I spent less time on wikipedia at the end of november (which is why missed your last comment). Roses by Clark is growing quickly...
Concerning the file rotation - I just asked for a 90° rotation for the Kitty Kininmonth picture - the easiest way to do so is by adding the gadget RotateLink in your user preferences (Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets). This will add a small link called 'rotate picture' or something similar (I only see the German translation ;->) just below the picture, enabling you to order a bot rotation of 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
I noticed that the following two files ( and ) are a bit unclear in which cultivar is actually shown - is the filename or the description incorrect? If it is a I suspect the filename that's wrong, you can add to have the filename changed.
Best regards, Anna reg (talk) 15:13, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Anna, thanks for letting me know how to correct wrong photo titles. I have corrected all those I know of. There is another problem I need help with: sometimes two or three photos are the same photo at different stages of being Photoshopped. How can I delete the inferior ones? There should be another two or three photos in the category later today, but there are a dozen roses not expected to flower again till (southern) spring 2014. Completists must be patient. Erictimewell (talk) 22:45, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome, Eric. To answer your question about deleting inferior versions of a picture you uploaded: the best template in your case would probably be superseded, but I think that template isn't really used for deletion any more (commons is not good with deleting files as long as there is no license violation) - you could also try - even though 'superseded' is not necessarily a reason for deletion (understandable, if it's taken into account that other users can change your pictures and upload other versions, which may be better in their opinion), it should be enough if you as the creator & uploader of boath versions ask for the deletion. To prevent that problem from happening, you can also upload new pictures under the same name as the old one and they will be automatically replaced - an example to see how that looks like would be this file.
I hope that helps... Anna reg (talk) 00:35, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eric,
I just noticed that the two versions of the close-up of Rosa 'Squatter's Dream' cite different gardens - do you know which one is correct? (the Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens or Nieuwesteeg Heritage Rose Garden?). Regards, Anna reg (talk) 10:24, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Anna, both descriptions are correct. The more yellow photo was taken at Bulla, the paler single flower was photographed in the Melbourne Botanical Gardens — and therefore doesn't qualify for your category. Same variety of rose, different plants. Erictimewell (talk) 19:29, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, sorry. I've since seen the problem and corrected it. Royal Melbourne Botanical Gardens. Erictimewell (talk) 19:33, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Aloha! I renamed your file as requested and changed the description. Could you please have a look and fix the description, if necessary? Thanks! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:35, 27 June 2017 (UTC) Many thanks, Hedwig. I'm not sure how to do it, but I'll give it a try. Erictimewell (talk) 04:40, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Worked out just fine! Thank you for adding the details! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:50, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
