Everything is gone. All my contributions, my user page. Everything. I have no idea what happened. Help would be greatly appreciatedFungal vexation (talk) 15:48, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Maybe you are thinking of your en.wikipedia account? -- Asclepias (talk) 17:24, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
Not only that person can't find their own wikipedia account, apparently they also can't find their own question here. All that would of course be perfectly fine if they weren't being uselessly rude with the people who help them. I'm making a mental note to never help that person again. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:13, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

I received a message that it had been deleted. It was from Jmabel. Thanks though Asclepias. I wasn't intending to return anyway.Fungal vexation (talk) 17:54, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

  • The only "message" you got from me was a request to keep the conversation in one place, namely here. Here, I told you, accurately, that the account on this site had no prior contributions. How on earth was I supposed to guess that you were talking about an account on a different web site? - Jmabel ! talk 19:15, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Why are a bunch of recent states of this page unavailable?

At least as of this writing, a bunch of states of this page (Help desk) very shortly before this one appear to be unavailable and are struck through in the history. Someone accused me (falsely) of deleting his question rather than answering it; I suspect these two facts are related. - Jmabel ! talk 18:52, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Is it possible to consolidate these accounts?

Hello Eugene. Go to Special:MergeAccount and it will show you if your accounts are unified. At the bottom of the page there should be a box where you can enter the passwords for those accounts, which should merge all your accounts. However you will still have separate user pages, user talk pages and watch lists for each wiki (shameless advertisement unless UserWiki is created end of advertisement). Technically we each have several hundred potential accounts, one for each Wikimedia wiki; each one is created when you visit them whilst logged in to any other Wikimedia wiki. Thanks, Green Giant. What a surprise I have 22 accounts/user pages! Seems like the UserWiki is a good idea whose time is well overdue. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 05:26, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

compagnie des Arts Photomecaniques

Hello my name is Judith Ries I live in Florida and I have 4 packages of Compagnie des Arts Photmecaniques that are in perfect condition and been looking for someone to buy them from me. I saw your photos and my photos are just like yours. I have about 60 of them all together. I know they are about 70-80 years old and was told that they are souvenir photos. The 1st one says Marseille Real Photos Cap on the back side it says Compagnie des Arts Photomecaniques 44, Rue Letliler, Paris,-1.5" a list of each photo is on the package. The 2nd package says Snaps of Port-Said and list of each photo in the package, the 3rd package says 2 Modern Cario Britannia Bookshop - 30Sh, Sherif Pasha, Cairo it also list the photos that are in the package. The last package is very different then the other 3 for each photo states right on the photo what the photo in the package is. For example "Huadu Temple, Colombo" and the picture is the temple. All the photos in the packages like I said are in great condition. The antique dealers I went in Mt. Dora, Fl said that I needed to look else where for the clients here would not apperciate these. Thank you inadvance for your time. Judith Ries — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.58.217.168 (talk • contribs) 16:01, 1 September 2014‎ (UTC)

EthnicRussiansInTheFormerUSSR.png Licensing and originality

The map File:EthnicRussiansInTheFormerUSSR.png is a derivative work of a map called the QBAM, maintained at the site AlternateHistory.com as a community project. Our strong preference is that the AH.com user Qazaq and the name of the map be referenced, and that mention be made that it is maintained at AH.com, as it is the product of several years of work there. The current file information indicates that the user has created the map themselves, and this is not the case. Xt828 (talk) 01:48, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

When you say "our strong preference", who is we here? It would be nice if you linked to the page on AlternateHistory.com (not AH.com!) that has this image on it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prosfilaes (talk • contribs) 05:37, 31 August 2014‎ (UTC)
It would make things much easier if Xt828 would provide a direct link to the map he believes is the map from which File:EthnicRussiansInTheFormerUSSR.png is immediately derived. From the clues above, I've spent much time trying to find the source map on that website, which by the way is a discussion forum, fighting with the captcha of its search tool on every search, getting links to threads with cryptic titles and hundreds of posts. Searching user "Qazaq" returns "invalid user", as apparently there's no user there with that name. But a thread eventually uncovered a user named "Qazaq2007". Still not finding the elusive source map after reading through dozens of his posts. Also, it seems that user ceased his contributions there in 2010. The closest-looking maps I could find were after going through links by other users to other websites, for example there and there. There's certainly a strong resemblance with File:EthnicRussiansInTheFormerUSSR.png, although there are also differences. It is plausible that they may be derived from a common source map. Of the two maps linked above, the one named "old_world_2008_subdivisions.png" is credited to Qazaq2007 by wiki.alternatehistory.com. There doesn't seem to be any indication there that it might have been offered under a free license by that person. However, that map, apparently from 2008, looks like it is based on the map File:A large blank world map with oceans marked in blue.PNG, which was started on the Commons in 2005 (and is not in the public domain but under licenses with share-alike obligations for derivatives), with the addition of the internal subdivisions. So, not sure who copied who. The original map may have been copied from Commons by the user of alternatehistory.com without crediting the original and without the license, and then the map modified with the subdivisions copied the other way around. The link to the map file "CRGNrZQ.png" was from the bottom of this post and is not credited there to an author's name. However, the larger context of the discussions in the threads there, in light of the presentation above by Xt828, may allow the conclusion that Qazaq2007 seems considered the author of a version of that map. There doesn't seem to be any indication that this map is offered under a free license by its author(s) either. That means, unfortunately, that Xt828, either personally or as an official representative of the website alternatehistory.com (I guess that's what he meant by "our"), can't give us a permission to use that map under a free license, without an explicit confirmation somewhere that the author(s) themselves have offered their work under a free license. If that map is derived from the others, including the 2005 map, the 2008 map, etc., then the contributing authors in the series should be credited and the license situation clarified. The uploader of File:EthnicRussiansInTheFormerUSSR.png should be invited to comment. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:41, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Actually, as the person who made this map, I am pretty sure that this map is a derivative work of this map -- http://darussophile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/natural-population-growth-ussr-2012.png

See here as well: http://darussophile.com/category/demography/

As for me picking the option that this is my own work, this was the result of an error and of some confusion on my part. Is there any way to fix this? Futurist110 (talk) 20:09, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

To fix the informations, you can edit the description page of the file, mention and link to all previous works that you have used, distinguish what is your work from what is the work of other people, attribute each part of the work to its source and actual author, respect the licensing status of the works. In this case, if the map you linked above was the map from which you derived your map, that only displaces the problem. There does not seem to be a free license associated to that map on that website. You can't offer a work under a CC-0 declaration without the consent of all the authors of the works from which it is derived. Also, that website doesn't seem to mention from where it copied that map. The original poster in this section seemed to notice an uncredited filiation from, or at least a common origin with, another map. And that other map itself may have an uncredited filiation, or at least a common origin with, one or several previous map(s) from Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:37, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Help with uploading picture. Yep I tried.

Real simple issue : I have 77 year old image, of my 2nd Great Grand Uncle, that was passed down with our family estate. As his Wikipedia page is missing an image of him, I would like to have the image I have be placed on his page.

Wikipedia Page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Noble

Image: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5XcZM38cLA3U0drcWN1N1M2aDA/edit?usp=sharing

I tried to follow the steps but it seems I dont have enough edits to gain the rights to upload images.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cjaysnyder (talk • contribs) 19:40, 31 August 2014‎ (UTC)

Hello CJ. At Commons we need to know about the copyright status of every image, including who took the photo, where they took it, whether it was published or not, roughly when it was taken and if it was a long time ago we need to know who holds the rights to the photo now. The best route is for the copyright owner of the photo (usually but not always the photographer) to send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org using the format at COM:ET. The email system is operated by a team of volunteers who will get in touch with the emailer and advise them of what needs to be done. Green Giant (talk) 20:45, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
As above, but if you can't identify the rights-holder, and there are no other free pictures, then you can probably upload the picture to Wikipedia as "fair use". We can't accept fair use images here at Commons, because all our media must be free to use for any purpose.
Photos of deceased persons are usually acceptable as fair use due to the impossibility of taking another picture. See for example the image used to illustrate en:Isaac Shoenberg. You can ask for help at Wikipedia if you get stuck.
Incidentally, we do have some media related to Edmund Noble at Category:Edmund Noble. No pictures of him, only postcards he sent :) –moogsi (talk) 05:43, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
We would still need to establish whether it was published for fair use on enwiki, as previously unpublished images can't be used per w:WP:NFCC#4. January (talk) 06:44, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Watermarks in Wiki Love Monuments 2014 Submissions

Dear Admin,

Some one told me that images with water marks will may eliminate the images from competition? I tried finding out in rules but didnt find any thing. In my submitted images watermarks are very low, bottom right. below is the link of my submissions

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Moiz.ismaili&ilshowall=1

Please advice.

regards, Moiz

Hello Moiz, Watermarks are not accepted/wanted on Wikipedia and Commons at all. The purpose is to have good useful images and that is without watermark. Not every national team has written this down, but in general I can say that images which watermarks can be eliminated from the competition. You can make the photos eligible by uploading a version without watermark. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 12:23, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
A slight clarification, the norm is more that we 'discourage' use of watermarks but they are not forbidden from Commons and watermarks may be legitimately masked or cropped off by other contributors after upload. Refer to Commons:Watermarks for a more detailed explanation of approach. In the case of the WLM competition, as Romaine says, any visible watermarks are likely to eliminate a photograph from the competition based on them being intrusive. It might be worth approaching the judges to ensure their local FAQs make this clear. -- (talk) 12:32, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

I want to upload a draw but when I get to the 4th step there comes this message" <api-error-unknownerror>" and "Describe= This field is required", but that's not true, I have writen a description. What could I do to solve this?--Dafne07 (talk) 08:29, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello Dafne. If you are using the Upload Wizard, please note it is perpetually broken, and unlikely to be fixed anytime soon. I would recommend using :Commons:Upload instead although it has occasional hiccups too. Green Giant (talk) 10:54, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Green Giant Why don't we disable it then? And not let people spend hours on a broken system.--Kafkasmurat (talk) 11:08, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Very good question but such a decision could only be made by the developers at Mediawiki and they would probably want to see local consensus, usually with an request for comment. I'm not certain that our admins or burocrats have any access to the interface, although I might be wrong. Green Giant (talk) 11:59, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Could some help on deleting my taken photos?

I have added the Delete template to some pictures which I have taken personaly. I would like to delete them. Could some administrators delete them. You will wind them from my Preferences. I will be very happy if their will be delete as soon as possible. --Paasikivi (talk) 18:10, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

In general, courtesy deletions aren't done after a certain period of time, and reasons like "The file is of poor quality or the resolution is so low that the file can not be used." tend to rub me wrong; if the resolution is too low, upload a higher resolution version. It might help to have more verbose explanations for why you want them deleted; feel free to use Google Translate or expect us to use Google Translate if the language is a problem.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:32, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
There is nothing wrong in having multiple photographs of a building taken from the same angle. Just because some of them are not as good as the others is no reason to delete them. MKFI (talk) 10:56, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
Some of the photos resolution is very bad. Multiple angle building photos are not in the deleting list. Some of the photos have poor resolution. --Paasikivi (talk) 11:45, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
File:QasrAlAlamRoyalPalaceinMasqatOman 01.JPG has 3.5 megapixels and is a reasonably good image. Deletion reason "File is unneeded since there is a better (non-duplicate) version". I do agree that File:Al Alam palace (8727225176).jpg is better and shows the same building from the same angle, but that is still no reason to delete a file.
Some of the images like 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are certainly close enough that they might be considered duplicates. MKFI (talk) 13:10, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Why was my page deleted?

Updating Photos on Wikipedia

I would like newer, more recent photos of the city of Wahpeton, ND on Wikipedia. I have uploaded 4 very current community photos I took on my camera. How do the old ones get removed [photos I did not take] and the new images placed? Also, how does information get edited as we have a new Mayor? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jane priebe (talk • contribs)

  • You are asking this question on Wikimedia Commons. The Wikipedia article at en:Wahpeton, North Dakota can be edited just like any other Wikipedia article. If you want to change the photos it uses, look for where the old photos are referenced in the article (e.g. if you are editing the article you will see things like "image_skyline = Wahpeton North Dakota.jpgimage_skyline" and "[[File:Richland County Courthouse Wahpeton.jpg|thumb|left|The Richland County Courthouse in Wahpeton, 2007]]". Those can be edited, just like any other portion of the article, to refer to different photographs, or new photos can be added to the article elsewhere without removing those. - Jmabel ! talk 19:15, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
  • One of your photos may need a permission from the author of the mural. If you want to edit Wahpeton,_North_Dakota you need to click an 'edit' link on the page. However if want to change information, you will need to provide a reliable source. Ruslik (talk) 19:18, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Public figure posing with an image of a character that they created or portrayed

I am looking for images of people that have been involved with animated television shows. Often, these photos will include a character that the person created or portrayed. For example, one photo that I found is of a voice actor wearing a shirt with an image of the character that he portrayed. In another instance, the creator of a TV series is posing in front of a backdrop that features characters from the series. If I contacted the photographer and he/she was willing to release these photos into the public domain, would I be allowed to upload them here? Or would they be unacceptable because the copyrighted characters are visible in the photos? --Jpcase (talk) 20:24, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Graphics display question

Hello. I am not sure if this is the best place to place this question. In case it is not could I be suggested the appropriate place? But anyways, my question is... how does one find out the proper graphics display of images here? Basically, what I am getting at is that I see certain images differently depending on which monitor I am using. It sounds odd, and to me it is odd, but I am just wondering if there is a way to find out what is the supposed "standard"? (Lilic (talk) 02:00, 3 September 2014 (UTC)).

Hello Lilic. Yes this is the right place to ask this question! Basically there is no "standard" because users are able to set their own preferences. Click on your Preferences at the top of any Commons page when you are logged in. Then click on the Appearances tab and look for the Files section which should be the fourth one down. There will be two options, for image size limit and thumbnail size. Then I'd recommend that you open a separate tab or window with any image and change the options to see which ones feel right for you. Some people like to have everything at maximum, others at minimum and probably most people somewhere in the middle. Green Giant (talk) 08:28, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I didn't exactly mean that - I meant the monitor itself! Different monitors show some colors differently, depending if I am at home, at the university, a friends place, the library, or so forth... the way the color appears on screens shows up differently... (Lilic (talk) 21:56, 3 September 2014 (UTC)).
Ah well then that is something out of our hands because it depends entirely on the make of your monitors, which operating system is in use at home and elsewhere, and what the graphic settings are. Green Giant (talk) 22:23, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Mm, okay, so just last question... there is no "standard" ? If so well okay then. :/ I must say though, some stuff that I uploaded looks quite odd on "some" monitors, while quite fine on others... the yellow color hues, in particular. (Lilic (talk) 04:01, 4 September 2014 (UTC)).
Computer monitors can vary quite widely on how accurately they can display colors and incorrect settings will ruin the colors on even the most perfect monitor. You would need to have a fairly good quality monitor color calibrated with a colorimeter for a start. Then you must remember that Commons hosts images from many different photographers and cameras. Some photographs may have been taken with a simple point-and-shoot compact camera with automatic color balance while another is taken with a professional DSLR using custom color balance settings. Then there are professional archival TIFF files, images with embedded color profiles (which your browser / image viewer software may or may not understand)... showing "true" colors of an image is a tricky science with no easy answers. Is it allowed to have a small watermark (signature) on the photos I upload? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Areej.khaddaj (talk • contribs) 07:23, 3 September 2014‎ (UTC)

Hello Areej. It depends on how small the watermark is. We don't have an official policy but I would recommend reading Commons:Watermarks and judge how your watermark fits into that proposed policy. If you feel that it is indeed fairly discrete, then there is no harm in uploading one image with the watermark and asking here to see if anyone can advise you about it. Obviously such images should also meet our licensing requirements. Green Giant (talk) 08:11, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
discrete => discreet, presumably. The issue is not the uniqueness of the watermark. - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, thanks for spotting that. Definitely mean't discreet. :) Green Giant (talk) 17:03, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

List of acceptable licenses

Is there a list of all acceptable licenses for the Commons? I know that there's this - Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses - which lists the Creative Commons licenses, GNU Free Documentation License, GNU General Public License, GNU Lesser General Public License, and the Free Art License/License Art Libre. But then that page goes on to say that all of the GNU licenses actually aren't acceptable. So why were they listed in the first place? And not all of the Creative Commons licenses are acceptable either. So if I ask a photographer to release an image to the Commons, should I only list the acceptable Creative Commons licenses and the Free Art License/License Art Libre? Or are there any other licenses that I should mention? --Jpcase (talk) 17:56, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

  • I would recommend you just ask them to release under CC-BY-SA, maximizes the rights they can hold onto without being too restrictive for our neeeds. - Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Lapeereastmascotlogo.jpg

Trying to upload a copy of our school's logo onto a wiki page. Took the image from the school's blog. What's happening is, we had a school merger (Lapeer East merged with Lapeer West) and for some reason Facebook is pulling images from Wiki to use as the school logos. With the new school, we got a new mascot and new colors. This is creating problems where as Lapeer East no longer exists and those on FB are now being listed with the wrong logo, wrong colors. It's changing the dynamics of reunion pages as well. If wiki is accurate, then what FB pulls from it to display on it's pages, that will be more accurate as well.

Lapeer East High School (Michigan) has a green and gold logo with an eagle on it. Lapeer West High School (Michigan) has a blue and gold logo with a panther on it. Variations include a W or an E, or LEHS or LWHS, depending on which school.

Now that they are combined as Lapeer High School (at the former Lapeer East campus), they are silver, blue and green, with a lightning bolt for a mascot.

Deleting pics and uploading again

Hi. I realized that there is a difference in quality of thumbnails of .jpg and .png images, as is visible here: https://imageshack.com/i/p2LHNhUsp . So, I want to permanently delete [the pictures I have uploaded] and upload again in .png. How do I request the deletion of all? Subtitles not showing

Hi there, I have tried my best but can not find a solution. I created subtitles for this file, but they do not show default. There was an ogv file before and I uploaded it again with subtitles as a new version. However, I had to add a script again by clicking on the CC icon at the bottom of the video. Still there are two versions of the same file, one with subtitles and the other not, and no matter how I tried on a wikipedia article, there is always the file without subtitles showing up on the relevant wikipedia article. I could not upload a subtitled version with another name, it does not allow me to. I guess the system gets confused and chooses to show the version without subtitles. How can I make the subtitled file appear and not the other way round? Thanks for any clues... Iñaki LLM (talk) 14:26, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi. The subtitles always display for me when I click the CC icon in the player. Note that the player doesn't read subtitle information from the file itself, rather the subtitles are stored in their own namespace, TimedText:, for example the English subtitles to this file are at TimedText:Txillardegi.ogv.en.srt. I added the template {{Closed cap}} to the file which makes it a bit more obvious where the subtitles live. So, there is no version of the file without subtitles. Unfortunately that doesn't tell you why they aren't displaying for you... –moogsi (talk) 22:39, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Moogsi, thanks for your feedback. My problem is when I use the file on the wikipedia article here (find: Historic Basque activist). Can you see the subtitles there? No subtitles showing for me, and if I go to CC, it goes "No text tracks available", with another option "Add subtitles", but actually the subtitles are there in the TimedText script, already added, so now what...? What any other parameters do I need to check? Iñaki LLM (talk) 08:55, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
I did look before at the video as it's embedded in the article, and the subtitles work for me. I can't reproduce what you're seeing :(
When I click CC on this video I get 3 options:
  • English (en) subtitles
  • Hide subtitles
  • Add subtitles
Perhaps refreshing those two pages (video and subtitles) bypassing your own browser cache (Ctrl+F5 on all Windows browsers) will do something? Maybe you're seeing the previous version of a page somehow. Try it in a different browser? I also purged those two pages which should clear the cache on the server side, although I confess a complete ignorance of the inner workings of the HTML5 player –moogsi (talk) 17:18, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
And it worked! Superb, I was just about desperate by now! It must have been the cache, fixed by purging. Many thanks for taking the time and helping so well. Iñaki LLM (talk) 06:17, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Possible to request images stitched together?

Is there a place where I could ask someone to stitch together three photos I have recently uploaded? I uploaded pictures of the inside of a stone megalith. It is so tall that from within I could only photograph the rear wall in three pieces, File:Knockeen Dolmen IMG 4732.jpg,File:Knockeen Dolmen IMG 4731.jpg and File:Knockeen Dolmen IMG 4730.jpg. Also, it might be difficult because the top and bottom pictures are horizontal while the middle picture is vertical, but it's worth asking... ~ R.T.G 00:11, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Uploading images from Flickr

I recently located an image on Flickr that I would like to upload to the Commons. It was not listed under an acceptable license, but after contacting the photographer with my request, he changed the photo's license to Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic. I believe that licenses on Flickr can be changed back and forth though. So would there be any problem with me uploading the image here, since technically, the photographer could revoke the license?

I've only uploaded an image here once before - in that case, I had the copyright holder send me an e-mail, in which he explicitly stated which license he was releasing the photo under. I then forwarded the e-mail to someone who works here at the Commons.

However, I'd much rather not have to send another message to this photographer, asking him to go through any hassle, since he's already being very generous in changing the license. --Jpcase (talk) 20:26, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Insert the the template Flickrreview in the description page of the file. Make sure you mention the link to the flickr page as the source. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:39, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Jpcase. As Asclepias states, the way to get round this problem is to use the {{Flickrreview}} template. While people can stop distributing images under a free licence, they cannot be revoked. The flickrreview template asks a trusted user or bot to come along, look at the image on Commons and flickr, check they're the same and that it's on flickr under a free licence. That way, even if the flickr user changes the licence, we can say "it was released freely at this time". -mattbuck (Talk) 15:50, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments - cannot upload to interactive map

Hello, today I uploaded some photos onto Wikimedia Commons and now cannot upload these photos to the interactive map to enter the competition as it says the image already exists. Help would be appreciated, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fay1982 (talk • contribs)

Hi Fay. You are correct, it will not allow you to upload images which are identical to ones already on Commons. However, the Wiki Loves Monuments map is just one way of doing things, you can also use the Upload Wizard. If you are referring to your image series including File:Royal Holloway, University of London (4).jpg then it looks to me like you did upload using the WLM Upload Wizard. However, you didn't add the listed building number, which can be done by adding {{Listed building England|1028946}}. I have taken the liberty of doing this for you. This template is used for any listed building, you can find the number to use via English Heritage, or similar groups for non-English buildings. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:38, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Logo Wiki Loves monuments pour la France

Bonjour,

Version EN (google traduction) Hello, I wanted to relay operation WLM on the net and on this occasion I could see different versions of the logo in different countries. One for France not being there, I'm allowed to create yesterday (following the design of other countries). Is it consistent? The author does not want to link the sources, but it seemed to have to do being a derivative. The file is properly record or you violate rights? thank you. Good evening, --Photomaltese (talk) 22:18, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

  • @Romaine: I think you may be able to answer this.--Ymblanter (talk) 09:04, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
    • I personally would recommend to have the same logo used everywhere, but I can't decide this for the various teams. I think as long as the goal of WLM is served in a proper way it is not an issue and local teams can have their own logo derived from the original one.
The original logo is designed by the uploader himself. Romaine (talk) 12:17, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Can a picture from a Missing Person Bulletin issued by the FBI be permitted

I would like to add a picture to a page, and wonder if it is allowable to use a neutral picture from the bulletin issued by the FBI, is that allowed?MeropeRiddle (talk) 06:49, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

If the FBI has made a verifiable statement that they own the copyright, then the photograph is public domain. The template to use is {{PD-USGov-FBI}}.
We do see many examples of federal organizations reusing photographs from other organizations, such as state level police forces. In these cases the copyright is not automatically public domain as this will vary by state or the policies of the agencies involved. If there is doubt, then provide the link here to the source site, as others may be able to give more specific advice. -- (talk) 12:38, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Probably not. If they obtained a photo of a missing person, they likely obtained it from an external source, such as for example the family, unless the FBI knew in advance that the person would be missing and sent their employees take a picture before it happened, which is improbable. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:11, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Cannot upload photo - says already exists

Hello, I recently uploaded two photos of Tower 42, but cannot upload the third as says image already exists. This is my own work and have not uploaded these photos before. I typed the building into the search engine and cannot find the image that is supposed to be mine, nor the other two photos I uploaded. Thanks for your help.

Please rename your photo and upload then.--Motopark (talk) 08:09, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
The files File:Tower 42 (2).jpg and File:Tower 42 (3).jpg uploaded successfully. Presumably the third image is "Tower 42.jpg"? A file with that name already exists.
Also, you can see your uploads from the "uploads" link next to log out link. MKFI (talk) 09:08, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Page for Francis Lynde, American author 1856-1930

How to create a page for Francis Lynde, American author 1856-1930?

Gutenberg.org has 17 books by this author. Apparently Lynde wrote approximately 36 novels of the American west, esp. Colorado and Nevada with subjects incl. engineering, mining and esp. railroading. Detail is especially accurate.

Little information on Lynde but Google books "Appalachian Images in Folk and Popular Culture" (W. K. McNeil) has a paragraph on him. Can it be "reused?"

Wikipedia is a wonderful site but extremely complicated to use. I uploaded a page on skeleton clocks a couple of years ago but could never figure out how to upload photos. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Douglas Vogt (talk • contribs) 15:17, 7 September 2014‎ (UTC)

  • Yes, obviously you are finding this confusing. For starters, you are not asking this question on Wikipedia. This is the Wikimedia Commons. Like the many language-specific Wikipedias, the Commons is a operated by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). However, the Commons is not an encyclopedia, it's a media respository (mostly images, also sound, video, etc.). Among other things, content in the Commons can be included in Wikipedia articles.
  • For the most part you are going to have to ask questions about Wikipedia on Wikipedia. I presume you are interested in the English-language Wikipedia. Here is a link to their help desk. But let me answer a couple of your questions now:
    • "Appalachian Images in Folk and Popular Culture" is a copyrighted work, so you could not take a paragraph intact. You could use it as a reference and paraphrase its content, exactly as you could in an academic paper.
    • Lynde's 17 books are themselves citable examples of what he wrote. You can compile a bilbliography, and you can summarize what he wrote about. However, you'd need a presumed reliable source for a statement like "Detail is especially accurate."
    • If he published 36 novels, you should be able to research in old newspapers and magazines to find contemporary reviews, and there is a fair chance you can research in academic journals to find some sort of overview of his work.
    • en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial should explain how to use images in Wikipedia articles.
  • I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 15:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Uploading the band logo and original pictures from gigs

Dear Wiki helpdesk,

I am writing an article about the band Stormy Atmosphere. It includes bands' biography, discography etc. I'd like to upload bands' logo, a picture from a show and two album covers. All these were made by professional designers and photographers, who sold the stuff to the band and/or granted all the rights to the it. I know the band members personally, but I assure you that all the info in the article is true, totally objective, and has independent proofs.

Please guide me how to enrich my article with these relevant pictures, with no risk of getting them used/stolen by some third party.

Thank you in advance,

Truly

Silverray

Hi Silverray. I think you're on the wrong project, you probably want Wikipedia - they do articles. Here on Commons we do media files. Regarding your question with media, the images you are talking about would all be presumed to be all rights reserved, and thus would not be allowable for upload here on Commons. If the band want to release them then they should contact our OTRS team to say they give permission to release these images freely. Please be aware that that means anyone can use them for any purpose, including making derivative works or using them for commercial gain. For more information on what that means, see Free content on wikipedia. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:12, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Summer of Monuments 2014 Upload Wizard - Cannot select license other than CC-By-SA 3.0

I usually release all my photos under CC-0, but for some reason the Summer of Monuments Upload Wizard not only defaults to CC-By-SA 3.0 (something I'm not crazy about as it is), but also gives no other licensing options! What gives? 0x0077BE (talk) 20:01, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

[Wiki name is talking about File:Margaret Mitchell NYWTS.jpg] It's possible, but in this case it wouldn't help at all. If you'd uploaded this image under a new name and then wanted it to be deleted because you made a mistake, we'd do that, but since you uploaded on top of an earlier version and then uploaded the correct one on top of that, we won't — it's not hurting anything by sitting in the page history, and nobody's going to complain that you damaged something, because you didn't. You did everything as you should have, so thank you :-) Nyttend (talk) 00:15, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Family Crests

I am searching for coats of arms.

My ancestors were in the Royal Court of Franz-Joseph Hapsburg. He killed a man in a duel, over his wife's honor, outside the ballroom. Then, he fled the country with the Kings help.

I can only assume this was between 1825 and 1890.

Monument location

How do I determine the latitude and longitude for a monument photo upload? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Warriors Remembered (talk • contribs)

  • There are several ways to do this. I usually identify the location on either Google Maps or Bing Maps, then use their tools to get latitude and longitude. - Jmabel ! talk 23:55, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
The lists I’ve checked on Wikipedia have all shown the location of each site. Note that coordinates you enter in the upload wizard are not for the monument itself, but where the photo was taken: they end up in the “Camera location“ field. The difference is likely to be slight in most cases, but will be significant for long-distance views.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:51, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

I do recall some similar elements missing after site updates gone wrong until I cleared my browser cache, so you could try that. Or you could try a different browser. If you see the problem with different browsers, it's probably got something to do with your preferences, but as far as I know, this should not depend on any gadgets being enabled or anything like that. Proper category for tall bearded iris variety photos

I chose the drop-down category "Iris" on the upload wizard, but I think that is the wrong category. The plant is iris, as in Iris pallida, and there are tall bearded irises, dwarf irises, etc. I don't think I know enough about the plant to choose the right place to put it. Should I make a Tall Bearded Iris Gallery to put them all into? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Renee C. Fraser (talk • contribs) 18:59, 10 September 2014‎ (UTC)

Because of the many meanings of the word, the page "Category:Iris" is not a category. The general category for the flowers is Category:Iris (Iridaceae). For a more precise identification, some Wikipedias have a page for this type questions about identification of photos about botanics. For example, the page fr:Projet:Botanique/Quelle est cette plante ? on the French-language Wikipédia. You can look if your favorite Wikipedia has a page like that. If not, you can can ask on a general discussion page, such as en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants on the English-language Wikipedia. Or ask your question on the French-language page, as there may be someone there who can reply to your question in another language. Or you can leave the files in the general category and hope that someone else will categorize them in the more specific categories. (I prefer to leave to other people your other question about the opportunity of the creation of galleries.) -- Asclepias (talk) 19:51, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Where does copyright end?

I had a file deleted:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Tim_Minchin-Pop_Art.jpg&action=edit&redlink=1

I understand that, had I taken the image and used software to manipulate the photo, it would be still copyright of the original photographer. However, I drew this, line by line, using a stylus, from scratch. Yes, I used the original photo (see here ) as a visual reference. But I physically drew it as you would with a pencil and paper, only using a stylus and a drawing game. Surely that isn't still covered by the original photographer's quite valid copyright, as it would if I had simply gone into Photoshop or something and run a few effects? Any advice would be helpful for the future. AndyRatchick (talk) 23:48, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

  • What you are describing is still a derivative work. You have a copyright on all that you did, but the original photographer still has an underlying copyright on the composition. For someone to reuse the work legally, they would need both of your permission. - Jmabel ! talk 15:46, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Counter Agruments

I notice most important articles do not acknowledge counter arguments such as Global Warming. The counter argument is that the technology today allows for "Man Assisted Weather Pattern." This is from early weather control by fixing baseball games with dry ice to the space based solar farming in Russia. Most of Russia satellite are in a Elliptical orbit and travel over the US. To save on fuel they don't retract their space base mirrors or re-position the satellite. Even radar is know to control weather by heating water vapor. The weather temperature used by Global Warming advocate don't collateral the data to actual sun rise and sun set. A space base mirror provides article sun rise and sun set through actual observation. To control the weather is big bucks and the truth is harder for the public to swallow. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.65.7.190 (talk • contribs)

Wikipedia help needed

Some years ago, someone set up a helpful tool here that helps resolve a specific type of typo — when you go to a nonexistent category, we're presented with a "Did you mean..." if we have a category with the same name with an "s" on the end. For example, go to Category:Abandoned churche and you'll be asked "Did you mean: Category:Abandoned churches?" It's a great idea, but it's not present at en:wp (see en:Category:Buildings and structure, for example), and I'd like to create it there. Could someone help me find the name of our template or MW page that produces this message, so I can copy the code to Wikipedia? Nyttend (talk) 00:30, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

  • Is there a better name for this category?
  • Is there a better place in the category tree?
  • Are there any hints concerning WMFLabs screenshots?

As admin at de-Wikibooks, I have enough experience to create the category by myself. I only want to know a suitable name and place. -- Juergen (talk) 14:14, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Founding Father

When I booted up your reference to Thomas Jefferson, he is identified as a Founding Father, with capitol Fs.

As Webster's Dictionary will inform you, Jefferson was not a Founding Father (with capitol Fs). Jefferson was in France in 1787, not in the USA or at Philadelphia. He was not at the Constitutional Convention. He is not a Founding Father (see Webster's Dictionary). The Founding Fathers are the men who were at the Constitutional Convention and drafted the Constitution. Jefferson was not at that convention. Please, correct the misinformation in your information about Thomas Jefferson.

I have no idea as to how to make any changes. Someone who reads this message will half to correct the misinformation about Jefferson.

  • As far as I can see from Category:Thomas Jefferson, the only sense in which Jefferson is "identified" as one of the "Founding fathers of the United States" (no second capital on the page, by the way) is inclusion in a category. And I, for one, would certainly consider the primary author of the Declaration of Independence to be one of the founders of the country. The Constitution is not the only critical founding document in U.S. history. - Jmabel ! talk 07:43, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
  • I suspect that Gene is referring to the Wikipedia article, which would really need to be discussed on the associated talkpage. Nonetheless, I agree with Jmabel that US "founding fathers" refers to a wider group of people than just signers of the Constitution. By the way, Jefferson didn't just happen to be in France in 1787; he was there as the US ambassador (minister plenipotentiary) at a time when the US didn't have 200+ ambassadors nor even a State Department. I would like to use about 7 pictures of Greek gods in a slide presentation of pictures of planets during a non-profit orchestra's performance of Holst's The Planets. We are not publishing this slide show separately - just using once for the pleasure of our audience. Is this allowed if I arrtibute each Wikimedia picure used as indicated? @2ndbsn: Usually, you'll have to attribute the author of the image plus the license it was released under. There's no need to mention Wikipedia or Commons. See Commons:Reuse (and possibly Commons:Licensing) for details. Hope that helps?

  • I can read Italian pretty well, but write it poorly. If you cannot understand English, say so and someone will translate, or someone else will answer. (Posso leggere l'italiano abbastanza bene, ma scriverlo male. Se non riesci a capire l'inglese, dirlo e qualcuno si tradurrà, o qualcun altro risponderà.')
  • I presume that the four images you are referring to are File:Piazza papa.jpg, File:Internomole.jpg, File:Loggiamercanti.jpg, and File:Monucaduti.jpg. I believe you are correct that if you did not upload the images with the tool specific to the competition, you cannot afterward enter them in the competition. I'm not sure why you thought otherwise. The instructions for the competition are, as far as I can tell, pretty clear.
  • Other than that, you can freely edit those pages, just like anyone else. If you do plan to edit, probably the first thing you should do is to clarify which of several places in Italy known as "Corso" these represent.
  • I apologise that I don't have time right now to write a lot more. If you have some specific questions about how to do some particular thing, ask and I will try to help. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
I don't see why one cannot add the WLM parameters manually after uploading. The WLM wizard is meant to make things easier but I keep forgetting to use it (out of force of habit). In this case, the editor does need to be more specific about what the photographs are of and add the correct WLM codes for each of them. HelenOnline 09:32, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
It would be better to ask at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Help desk. HelenOnline 10:20, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Certainly for WLM-UK you can upload and add the WLM stuff after. That's what I've been doing. I don't see why you'd have to use the WLM uploader - it's not going to add anything you can't add in plain wikitext. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:31, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Pmaldi I have identified and added WLM parameters for one, will also try fix the other three. Please use the WLM Italy wizard next time. HelenOnline 14:03, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Crashcourse-logo.png

I uploaded an image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crashcourse-logo.png It was on this website: http://everydaybiochemistry.wordpress.com/2012/03/09/crash-course/ That website has no copyright restriction or even a terms and conditions section (referring to the website creator, not Wordpress). The image refers to a youtube channel which does not restrict distribution of the logo (https://www.youtube.com/user/crashcourse). Therefore, there should be no problem regarding me uploading the Crashcourse-logo.png file, as far as I understand. What can I do? If there is any infringement of copyright or other legal concerns, I am happy for the file to be deleted. Thank you very much, --Akhi666 (talk) 13:49, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Company Logo Uploads?

Good Afternoon,

I have been tasked with adding our logo to the wikipedia page for The First Academy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_First_Academy, but wasn't sure how the licensing should work. The logo was created by The First Academy, and is owned by The First Academy; as their marketing department and web designer I am approved to use the logo in all mediums and am the person who maintains their branding and logo use rights, but it is not meant to be publicly used by anyone. I did not know how to make the licensing tag, can you help me get a logo uploaded?

Thanks,

Help removing a page from a .djvu upload

Resolved

According to wikisource:en:Help:Internet Archive, uploaded .djvu files for use there shouldn't have the Google Books cover page. Unfortunately, my recent upload File:Fragments of the Debates of the Iowa Constitutional Conventions of 1844 and 1846 along with Press Comments and Other Materials on the Constitutions of 1844 and 1846.djvu does. List of train songs: question on image copyright/use

I've been editing Wikipedia's List of train songs for the past few years and would like to add an image from the sheet music of the first known train song, which was copyrighted 1828. I located the image on the following page on JScholarship:

https://jscholarship.library.jhu.edu/handle/1774.2/31154

The URL for the image itself:

https://jscholarship.library.jhu.edu/bitstream/handle/1774.2/31154/039.021.000.webimage.JPEG?sequence=5

I wasn't able to find any information regarding the re-use of images on JScholarship, but in any case, the image I'd like to upload would be for fair use, educational purposes only. By and large, it would be of no other value since it would only include the first page of a multi-page work, plus it would be relatively illegible when reduced for inclusion in the WP article.

Meanwhile, the significance of the image to the article's introduction and its subsequent interest to readers are incalculable. While hundreds of other sheet music images might be readily available, none is more notable than this one.

I've only uploaded a couple images to the Commons, so I'm uncertain as to how to proceed in this case. Therefore, I'd appreciate your advice. Thank you. Allreet (talk) 16:40, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

The copyright on this song had expired long ago. On the other hand, exact copies of 2D public domain works are considered to be in public domain (see Commons:2D_copying). So, you can upload them. Ruslik (talk) 19:24, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm looking for a picture of the genealogical chart of the characters in fr:La Comédie humaine, in one of the rooms of the fr:Maison de Balzac. Hi there.

My name is Jonathan Thal or in Hebrew יונתן טל Some years ago I tried to use your site but since then I just forgot in what user name or password I used From my records I have a clue that my password was: [redacted]

Since I want to send photos to the Wikimedia competition, I spent over an hour trying to re-enter your site but in all cases the system either rejected my user name or the password I tried to change both of them and again I failed. I tried even to give my gmail details and again just failed.

Can you find out please what was my mistakes or give me new user name and password.

Video & sound files also, but it's overwhelmingly images. And, of course, the point isn't just to upload them. It is to describe them and categorize them in a way that makes them readily searchable, and to facilitate legal reuse. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

  1. This isn't Wikipedia (it's the Wikimedia Commons).
  2. Technically, just like any other page on Wikipedia.
  3. As they say there "notability first, then an encyclopedia article. If you have a basis to demonstrate that the social network is significant -- e.g. articles in reliable, independent sources; documentation that shows, say 100,000 active users -- and you are not yourself anyone with a conflict of interest then go for it; otherwise, I'd advise you not to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 15:19, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your assistance!

--Loudersoft (talk) 21:38, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

You don't just need "her permission to upload it here," you need the copyright holder, whether that is her or someone else, to grant a specific license that meets Commons' requirements. I recommend CC-BY-SA 3.0, but as explained there, there are other alternatives. Once you have that sorted out, see COM:OTRS as to how the permission can be passed along to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 01:37, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

I received this email about a deletion request. I wish to respond. But I do not retain any technical skills that I may have learned while posting the original picture.

Is there a way to respond and get posted by a simple email?

The subject of the picture is of significant historical relevance, and the photo was difficult to take.

The distance between the two figures of the fountain and the Empire State Building is more than 5 miles, and documenting the juxtaposition is an important detail in the reason this alignment exists.

  • If you happen to be the Flickr-user, who uploaded the photo to Flickr, you can simply change the Flickr-license to a "free" license like CC-BY-SA-3.0 (see Commons:Licensing for a list of usable license permissions).
  • If you are not the photographer/Flickr-user, you'll have to "proof" your permission to use this image freely. Such permissions need to be forwarded via email to the Commons OTRS-team (see Commons:OTRS for more details on the process and an email template).
  • After you have decided on a specific license, add a template for it to the image information page (most common licenses have templates already prepared, f.e. template:CC-BY-SA-3.0). Hope that helps a bit. GermanJoe (talk) 03:05, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Baboon Logo.png

I found the logo on Google. You can also find it here: http://www.jobindex.dk/vis-job/h465202

--Ela.ciosici (talk) 08:19, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Would it be OK if I get a written approval to use it, from the owners of the logo?

--Ela.ciosici (talk) 08:32, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello Ela.ciosici, this logo is so very simple that doesn't appear to contain anything copyrightable. Hence, I've marked with {{PD-Textlogo}} and {{Trademarked}} and removed the request for speedy deletion. Unless User:JuTa disagrees with that, everything should be alright now. --El Grafo (talk) 09:47, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Need to change my user name

I would like to change my username to reflect the name I use on Wikipedia. I have usurped the name "Mark Miller" across the board on all Wikis (except the Italian Wikipedia which had a block on a user with that name...ironic because I am 50% Italian. LOL! TMI, I know) could someone assist me please?--Amadscientist (talk) 03:09, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

The place to go to is meta:Steward requests/Username changes. LX (talk, contribs) 08:42, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
I was actually told that an admin could do the change locally on commons because I have the name globally. But I will look through that page. Thanks you.--Amadscientist (talk) 20:27, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Things changed recently. LX (talk, contribs) 20:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I was given a very detailed explanation about the recent changes. But guess what else changed...my username! ;-) So a big thank you to whoever helped me out!--Mark Miller (talk) 23:37, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Glad it worked out. LX (talk, contribs) 09:11, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Deleting photos just uploaded

most of the photos I uploaded our local landmarks, not national, so I want to delete some of them. How? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Weedpatch (talk • contribs)

  • If they are "landmarks" in any sense, then Commons would almost certainly like to have them, but if they are recent uploads (within the last week) and haven't been used in articles, just put {{Speedydelete|Uploader request, recent upload}} on the file relevant pages, and they should be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

License: A User Friendly Guide Please?

I have absolutely no idea how to do this licensing thing and there is no user friendly step-by-step instruction that I can find at this site. Is it possible for someone -- anyone -- to please provide me with a step-by-step guide to actually getting this nonsense done? I have no clue as to what to do and how to do it after a license is selected.

~~81belle — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81belle (talk • contribs) Please sign your edits with ~~~~, which will add appropriate links; don't just write "~~81belle".

I can't tell exactly what you are asking -- how to choose a license? technically, how to add it to a photo? etc. -- but I'll do my best to answer. I'm going to assume that you are talking about free-licensing your own photos, where the thing you are photographing is not itself a copyrighted object; if that's not the case, then this becomes much more complicated, and I'd need the specifics.
In terms of what licenses are allowed, there is no substitute for reading Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain. I find that most people wish either to place their content in the public domain (give up all rights) or, at the opposite extreme, to reserve as many rights as are compatible with use on Commons.
To give up all your rights and place the work in the public domain, use the CC-0 license. Just place {{Cc-zero}} in the "permissions" area of the information template on the file page (or, really, anywhere on the page, but that's a good location).
To reserve as many rights as are compatible with use on Commons, use {{Cc-by-sa-3.0|author=YOUR NAME HERE}} (same instructions about placement). Where I've written "YOUR NAME HERE", put whatever text you wish reusers to use to attribute your photo. Like all licenses acceptable to Commons, this allows your image to be reused freely, but requires that reusers indicate whose work they are reusing, and that if they make a derivative work their derivative work must also be similarly licensed. (There are also some other details; if you want those, I suggest you read the license.)
If that doesn't answer your question, then you'll need to be more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello 81belle, since it is your only upload to this site, I assume you are talking about File:Boynton Katherine.jpg, right? Well, if this was an ordinary photograph anyone could have taken, everything would be alright. But this isn't an "ordinary" photograph, it's a professional portrait and it has been published elsewhere before. To make sure that you are not just someone who grabbed somebody else's photo from the web and uploaded it here as their own work (which unfortunately happens far more often than professional photographers uploading their own works), we need some evidence that you are indeed the photographer or copyright holder. The procedure is quite simple: Take the e-mail template from Commons:Email templates/Consent and fill it out. Then send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org using the most "official" e-mail address you've got. Then go to File:Boynton Katherine.jpg, click on "edit" in the top toolbar and place the text {{OTRS pending}} next to the |permission= (so that the line now reads |permission={{OTRS pending}}), then save the page. This last step is optional, but highly recommended. After that, sit back and relax, monitoring you e-mail account for queries from our support team every once in a while. Please note that the support team consists entirely of voluntary Wikimedians and their backlog seems to be quite large at the moment, so please be patient. Should the file get deleted meanwhile, it can be restored easily once everything has been sorted out. Hope that helps? --El Grafo (talk) 17:07, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Uploading photo of monument, but MAP is wrong. Can we fix?

Where do input info on map position of mounment. (In Vermont)

Probably it can be done. Commons:Geocoding describes the methods, and if it's not clear, you can ask in its talk page. You can also specify what particular photo you're asking about. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:50, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Unified Login active, works everywhere but Commons

I have an account with unified login active. Except it isn't linked on Commons for some reason. I have requested a password reset from Commons but the email never arrived (checked spam folder; tried twice). Interestingly I could only request a password reset by entering my email address, entering my username didn't work. How do I unify the accounts? --101.98.178.108 00:58, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Please, file a request at m:Steward requests/Username changes. Ruslik (talk) 19:27, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I've done that. --101.98.178.108 03:28, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Adding Monument ID

I have uploaded a few photos to participate in Wiki Loves Monument. Unfortunately, I uploaded them regularly. Now they don't have any Monument ID and I guess they won't be a part of the competition. Please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aunzee (talk • contribs) 12:08, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

@Aunzee: You can manually add the WLM parameters after uploading. Add {{Cultural Heritage Pakistan |1= }} with 1=Monument ID number in the file description, and add {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2014|pk}} at the bottom of the file after the licence header and categories (for images of monuments in Pakistan). segnalazione foto libere

Salve,

Grazie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcristina 82 (talk • contribs) 14:59, 28 September 2014‎ (UTC)

Cannot find Monument ID number

Hi,

There is no way I can get the Monument ID number. I'm trying to find ID for Charles Bridge in Prague and Krakow Castle in Krakow. When I click on Get Monument ID, the page is either in Czech or Polish. Even in Czech I couldn't find anything about my monuments. So that means there is really no ID for these? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mogiguere (talk • contribs) 01:52, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

The number for Charles Bridge is mentioned at Category:Charles Bridge, and the number for Wawel (assuming that's what you mean by Krakow Castle) is mentioned at Category:Wawel. LX (talk, contribs) 08:39, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
I found the ID number for Charles Bridge at Category:Charles Bridge and found the ID number for Wawel Castle on another image file description and just added it to Category:Wawel Castle. I have added them to your entries plus WLM tags where you did not use the WLM upload wizard. HelenOnline 08:43, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

There was an error while uploading the file to stash.

Hi, having problems with upload wizard. It took my hours with several tries. It's been 3 months, i can't upload properly. It had a problem. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Help_desk&diff=prev&oldid=133354775 I thought it's over. But it's not. I just gave up. I don't think i'm coming here back again. I won't risk hours. It works with uploading 5-10 pictures. But not more. I typed all the info at the bulk upload page and it doesn't upload. (Error: There was an error while uploading the file to stash.) I'm going to mourn about the time. --Kafkasmurat (talk) 19:00, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Sorry to hear about that. The Upload Wizard is unfortunately really broken, and developers don't seem to care about feedback. The old Commons:Upload process tends to be much more reliable, but it's no use if you're trying to upload multiple files at once. There are some alternative batch uploading tools listed at Commons:Upload tools#Standalone desktop applications, which may work better, but I haven't used them, so I can't vouch for them personally. LX (talk, contribs) 17:49, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
I agree with LX, and obviously, the UploadWizard has more issues with it than it solves. However, one thing I can assure you is that, when those errors sometimes come up, the file has already been written onto commons, but just a feedback you're seeing as a result what I can't explain. Uploading this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tana_Baru_Cemetery_Photosphere_02.jpg, I had the same error of stash whatever, however, when I checked my contributions, that file was uploaded, and had no problems. So most times, when these errors come, go check if it ACTUALLY committed the file, before losing hope. :) --Nkansahrexford (talk) 14:21, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Derivative FX

Since the tool Derivative FX for uploading the derivative images from Commons doesn't work, I'm not able (in an easy/quick way) to perform that activity. There's an alternative tool that I can use? Any suggestion would be highly appreciated. Thank you. --Massimo Telò (scrivimi) 15:29, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
