Hi.

These images are copyrighted by Paul Ekman/Paul Ekman Group LLC. See link to our product below. What recourse do I have to remove them from the public domain?

Duplicate categories

I have no idea where to place this:

Category:Hiroshi Yoshida and Category:Yoshida Hiroshi are about the same person, once with Japanese/Asian order of names, once with Western order of names. I don't know which one would be correct on Commons and where to adress this problem. I'd appreciate someone taking it to where it needs to go. In English Wikipedia there are instructions: Names of modern figures ... always use the Western order of given name + family name in Latin script. I do not know if the same is applied here. Yes, that's clear for the English Wikipedia, but in Commons I believe we have a less clear policy between using the "English" name of people and using their native name. email an article quickly

Hi, 91.132.41.163, if you make an account (pick a nice username) and the person whom you want to email is willing to accept emails from other users (see preferences settings) you can send an email with the link you want him or her to look at. Lotje, I don't think that's what he/she is asking. BBC has a feature that actually emails a copy of an article, not just a link.
To the original poster: this doesn't make a lot of sense for Commons, because we are mainly a repository of images and sound. We don't have articles. You usually wouldn't want a copy of (say) a typical 5MB photograph as an attachment to an email. ‎Louisiana National Guard awards

The ribbons at en:Awards and decorations of the National Guard#Louisiana are flagged to be moved to commons (with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}}) since 2011-09-11, but haven't been moved. They were uploaded in 2009 by en:User:BrassTacks as their own work and are released into the public domain. Is there a reason these haven't been moved? Gelöschte Bilder erneut hochladen

Ich habe vor einiger Zeit Fotografien hochgeladen. Sie wurden allerdings aufgrund der fehlenden Einverständniserklärung des Urhebers gelöscht. Nun wurde aber diese allerdings vom Inhaber der Nutzungsrechte an Wikipedia per Mail gesendet. Ich kann aber die Bilder immer noch nicht hochladen, beim Versuch erscheint "Es war bereits andere Datei gleichen Inhalts vorhanden. Sie wurde allerdings gelöscht". Könnte mir jemand erklären wie ich nun am besten vorgehen soll? Ich bin für jede Hilfe dankbar! LuMaBe (talk) 14:24, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

Photography of a painting

Not unless the painting is in the public domain or you're able to get the painter's permission to publish the painting under a license that allows anyone to use it in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:38, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Just to flesh that out: the ownership of a physical object is completely separate from the ownership of the intellectual property rights relevant to reproduction. This is sometimes a little confusing to people in the case of a painting, because there is only one such painting, but it makes perfect sense it if you stop and think about it: obviously, owning one copy of a print doesn't give you the right to reproduce the print. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
In the specific case, the painter is dead, and the heirs (husband, kids) agree to publish the paintings (at least some of them) under such license. Does it make a difference? If the painter's heirs have agreed to publication under a free license, then yes, you can take a photo of the painting and upload the photo under that license, listing the painter as the author. Anlegen einer neuen Unterkategorie.

Ich habe in der Kategorie: Military of Prussia die Datei: Feldkanone C 73 002.jpg neu eingestellt. Da ich aber befürchte, dass diese Datei in der relative großen Kategorie nicht wieder auffindbar ist, möchte ich hierfür die neue Unterkategorie: C/73 Feldartilleriematerial C/73 erstellen. Da das hierfür erforderliche Verfahren auf der Seite: "Commons:Kategorien - neue Kategorien anlegen" sehr ungenau beschrieben ist habe ich folgende Bitten: 1. Wer kann die gewünschte Unterkategorie für mich anlegen? 2. Es gab schon die Kategorie Category:8 cm FK C/73 für (vermutlich) dasselbe Modell. Ich habe das Bild dort eingefügt und die Kategorie zu Category:Military of Prussia hinzugefügt. Den Namen der Kategorie finde ich nicht so toll, er passt aber zu den anderen Namen in Category:Krupp artillery. --rimshottalk 19:41, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Vielen Dank für Deine Hilfe. Zum besseren Verständnis noch einige Informationen. 1. Mit dem Begriff "Feldartillerie-Material C/73" wurden in Preußen die um 1873 neu eingestellten Feldkanonen bezeichnet. Es handelte sich hierbei um eine leichte 8-cm- und eine schwere 9-cm-Feldkanone. 2. Es gab zu keinem Zeitpunkt die typische 8-cm Krupp'sche Feldkanone. Auf Grund seiner vielfältigen Geschäftsbeziehungen hat Krupp eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher 8-cm-Kanonen gefertigt, so dass eine Zusammenfassung dieses Types in nur einer Unterkategorie problematisch ist. Die Bezeichnung C/73 wurde nur in Verbindung mit der preußischen Ausführung verwendet. mfG--Wanderfürst (talk) 08:52, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Hostwap.JPG

Die Datei habe ich gefunden unter http://wadgassen.de/kultur/wappen.html Das ist das alte Ortswappen von Hostenbach. Unklar ist für mich, wer die Rechte an einem historischen Wappen hat. Das Wappen wird im Internet auch an anderer Stelle verwendet. Hat die Gemeinde die Rechte an dem Wappen? Wen kann ich dazu fragen?

The title and description suggest that this is an "ethnographic map", but it seems to be a picture of a beaded belt or something. I wasn't sure where to go to alert people to the inaccuracy. (I initially added Template:Inaccurate description, but noticed that it seems to be used for inaccurate but retained captions, like those on some Bundesarchiv images.) -sche (talk) 23:40, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

The textile has been clipped in the shape of the Volhyna region as it appears on a map (or some maps, at least). Maybe a bit of a stretch to call it a map, considering there are neither any labels nor geographic features other than the outline, but I guess it could serve as a location map or topical icon.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:05, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

file uploaded by serial copyright offender

What is the procedure for dealing with a file uploaded by a serial copyright offender when you dont have a hit on the web for where they might have stolen it from?

Every other image the user (who is now blocked on en Wikipedia as a sock of a user who was blocked for copyright violation) was clearly lying about creating because the original could be easily found on the web. At one point, I proposed making content added while evading a block or ban eligible for speedy deletion, but unfortunately, the community decided that blocked copyright violators are free to continue to tie up resources with individual evaluation of each of their uploads. So in such cases, after going through and marking files which are demonstrably copyright violations, I typically nominate the remaining files for deletion with a rationale like "unlikely authorship claims based on the low/inconsistent resolutions, missing/inconsistent metadata and the uploader's history", whatever applies, providing links to the user's upload logs (and that of any sockpuppets) or giving examples showing the uploader taking credit for other people's work etc. I don't think I've ever had such a nomination turned town. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:57, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

bin gerade dabei meine Benutzerseite neu zu gestalten. Dazu habe ich die Frage, wie ich auf Kategorien verlinken kann. Also da, wo jetzt zum Beispiel Kassel-Steig steht sollte eigentlich ein Link zu Category:Kassel-Steig sein. Wie kann man das ändern?

If I understand your question correctly, you need to prefix the name with a colon; for example, typing
[[:Category:Kassel-Steig]]
makes this: Category:Kassel-Steig. The same trick works for files and templates, to create a link instead of inserting (or transcluding) the target page.
Google-deutsch: Wenn ich Ihre Frage richtig verstehe, müssen Sie den Namen mit einem Doppelpunkt vorangestellt werden, z. B. die Eingabe

Please protect my user page

I don't know if this is the right place to bring this up but a vandal has been tampering with my user page cross-wiki. I've asked administrators to protect my user page from edit by other users on numerous other wikia projects, including but not limited to wikipedia and wikiquote. Please, if there's an admin available here, can someone please protect my wikimedia commons user page so the it isn't met with further vandalism. Voting on round two of POTY

How?

I was invited to vote by a big banner and fulfil the eligibility requirements but when I go to the voting page all the 'vote' buttons are greyed out with no explanation. If I press the blue 'vote now' button it merely reloads the same page (pointless). Prl42 (talk) 12:23, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Removed upload

My contribution to Wikipedia was removed, after the photo I uploaded was removed from Commons. I did not receive any notice on this anywhere, nor a reason given. The photo I uploaded was a cropped photo from Flickr, with appropriate license. The license allowed to remix the image. Where can I see what was deemed wrong with the upload, where can I protest, and what else can I do now? I am very sure it has been a mistake. Timelezz (talk) 12:44, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

This is the photo on Flickr. If you click on the "Some rights reserved" link, you'll see that it's licensed as CC BY-NC-SA 2.0. The NC here stands for Noncommercial, which is a license condition that Commons and Wikipedia do not accept (see e.g. Commons:Licensing).
The file was reviewed by Leoboudv, who identified this problem and tagged the file for deletion. It was then deleted an hour or so later by Fastily. Those actions were both appropriate, but the reviewer should have also left a message about the problem on your talk page. I'm sorry you weren't notified. --Avenue (talk) 13:03, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
By the way, even if the photo's license on Flickr was acceptable, we might have had to delete it. US law doesn't provide freedom of panorama for statues, so photos of US statues require permission from the sculptor, not just the photographer, unless the statue is no longer protected by copyright. --Avenue (talk) 13:12, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

First time really ever in commons, over at enwiki I'm trying to fit File:Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement.svg as an icon on a talk page template (with a link to full-size), and wanted to request the text on the left be displayed in boldface. I presume you're talking about File:DOWNTOWN TULSA.jpeg, which is a collage of six photos. The sources are described as "Myself, friends, Facebook". The Facebook part of that is the most worrying, because Commons only accepts freely licensed photos (or material in the public domain), and most pictures on Facebook are not freely licensed. (That is free as in "freedom", not as in "free beer".) You may need to find a free replacement for the Facebook pictures.
You would need to license your own pictures under a free license for them to be accepted. It would probably be clearest if you uploaded your own photos separately first. Your friends would need to freely license their photos as well. It would probably be quickest for them to upload their own photos, perhaps with your help, although you could upload their photos yourself and go through our OTRS process to document their permission for the free licensing.
The other thing to be aware of is that there are several free licenses you can choose, but they are not all compatible with each other. Free collages can only be built from compatibly licensed images. See Commons:Collages for more information. --Avenue (talk) 00:15, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Tata Steel Lake image might be violating copyright

The above image has been added to Wikimedia based on a Flickr upload which is apparently licensed as a CC-by-2.0 file. However, it is actually a photograph by the Swiss photographer, Werner Bischof, taken in 1951 and might not be in the public domain. In any event, the Flickr uploader, alok57's licence is probably not relevant.

Caorle 1958

Mein Schwiegersohn Robert Schediwy hilft mir dabei, die für die Allgemeinheit interessantesten Diapositive und Schwarz-weißfotos meiner vielen Reisen zu scannen, zu speichern und teilweise auf Commons zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dabei bearbeitet er die Bilder auch, schneidet Überflüssiges weg, hellt zu dunkle Bildteile auf. Kann es sein, dass deshalb manche Bilder von Commons nicht akzeptiert werden?

Aber die Scans aus meinm Fotoalbum 1958 betreffend Caorle (da war es noch ein Fischerdorf!) sind doch harmlos, und es kann auch keine Copyright-Probleme geben!

Can I use image available over the Internet

Can I use any image available through Creative Commons.For example. I want to contribute to the Parks in Chandigarh, one of the city in India. I don't have any pictures taken by me. If you find something you like on commons you go to the page of the image, check the license, and then you can use it following this license: Everything here should be mostly free, but maybe you have to give credits (for a by attribution license) if you use the image from commons elsewhere. If you find something you like elsewhere the procedure is similar, and you cannot upload "found" images here if their license does not explicitly permit this. Does that remotely answer your question? I'm not exactly sure what you want, a link or two to examples would help. –Be..anyone (talk) 23:14, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Your question is very confusing. Are you sure you meant to say "Creative Commons"? Creative Commons is an organization that has developed various licenses, each of which has its own rules. You've asked your question on the help desk of Wikimedia Commons, the media repository of the Wikimedia Foundation, but your question on its surface doesn't seem to have anything to do with Wikimedia Commons. When you ask, "Can I use any image...": can you use it where? Your question doesn't make that clear at all.
I hope what I just wrote there helps at least a little. And, as User:Be..anyone said, it would be very helpful if you give a specific example of an image (give us a link to it) and explain more specifically what you want to do with it. - Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

SVG upload problem

Hello. I've recently uploaded a self-made svg file, file:Gametogenesi-it.svg, created with inkscape. Unfortunately the resulting version (but not this one appears full of graphic errors I have troubles dealing with, not being an expert user of the programme. Can somebody help me, please? It's got nothing to do with your Inkscape expertise. It's a bug/limitation of the Wikimedia software's SVG to PNG conversion that's been around since 2006. That's right – for some reason that escapes me, we insist on converting perfectly good vector graphics to broken raster images using antiquated and unmaintained software. Brilliant, isn't it? Thanks! Eventually I was able to fix it all converting everything to paths. I don't know whether it'd be better to delete the oldest versions, perhaps somebody might want to translate and could find them more convenient, I don't know. Rename a file

Hello there,

I'd like to rename and resize the file on my wikimedia profile from "Serge Kouzué.jpg" to "Serge Kouzue.jpg" and as I could'nt able to make it straight in my space, I tried to upload the same file with different name and size, but this was deleted by Mbch331 What can I do ?

  • I don't see a File:Serge Kouzué.jpg so I'm not sure what file you are talking about.
  • Use {{Rename}} on the file page to request a rename.
  • As for resizing on the profile page, if you mean just changing how it appears there, set the width explicitly in the inclusion (e.g. [[File:Serge Kouzue.jpg|500px]] or [[File:Serge Kouzue.jpg|thumb|500px]]. If you mean you want to upload a higher resolution, use the "Upload a new version of this file" link at the bottom of the file page. If you mean you want to upload a lower resolution, please don't, just let the software downsample it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:46, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Wrong icon-symbol for ´no copyright´ should be corrected.

Hello. The icon meant to represent NO Copyright is wrong, and should be corrected everywhere is shown. Superimposing the letters N and O forms the proper icon or symbol; which has the diagonal slash as the letter N, from high left to low right.

Striking my guess, it made no sense, if a slash works for the letter C a backslash will also work,and vice versa. In fact the CC PD marks do what you want: PD white: , PD transparent: . Second guess, the non-CC PD marks are intentionally designed to be different. Likewise guessing, it may have something to do with the neologism “copyleft“ (which has gained fairly wide currency in the info-liberation world), referring to various kinds of free licence on text, software or media. A left slash is the standard for prohibitory road signs in most countries, c.f.   • First, you say the source is "ajou university". Assuming that is accurate -- an institutional source, not a photo you took as an individual -- then you as an individual cannot offer to license it. The university (or whoever else might have the copyright) must send email to verify a free license, per COM:OTRS.
  • Technically, where OTRS is not involved, licensing information is provided by editing the file page and providing an appropriate licensing tag. If OTRS is involved, you can add {{OTRS pending}} so that the file will not be deleted for a few weeks, so that there is time to deal with the third-party licensing.
  • As for the test images you want to delete, just tag them {{speedy|Test upload, please remove}}. - Jmabel ! talk 17:03, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

I recently uploaded images that I wanted to use to edit a page but I don't know how to find them now as I didn't record the name of the file. No, you cannot upload files with permissions limited to Wikimedia Commons, and you cannot upload files with licenses that prohibit modification. All works uploaded to Commons must be free for anyone to use in modified or unmodified form and for any purpose, including commercial purposes. LX, I think you've misunderstood the question; admittedly, it's not terribly clear.
Achille, let me make sure I understand you correctly: are you saying that someone else (not you) published images here on the Commons, then separately granted you rights to publish them? Or are you saying that someone else (not you) published images here on the Commons, and you are asking whether this gives you rights to publish them? Either way, you should be able to publish, but if it is the latter then there may be specific conditions about attributing the images and being specific about what license they are published under. Image Use

I am new to this and all I want to do is help by providing images I have. I recently received a message from someone stating that my images may be deleted because it "doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear." I didn't think that doing this would be so difficult. What I did was to scan the front and back of a collectable hockey card to upload to a page as I noticed that there were no images of this hockey player on it. I translated the files "Isomerism-ball-de" and "Isomerism-ball-V2.de" into portuguese using Inkscape and now I want to upload it back into commons. How can I do that without violating the original licences? Which licence am I going to use for my files?

We are still waiting for an approval form the Legal. On the other side, the Upload Wizard is meant to be simple; so we don't recommend 3.0 and 4.0 together there. And, many people here expressed their disagreement with the new features in 4.0 (handling of non copyright rights, reduced attribution requirement, compromise in personality rights in self portraits, etc.). If you still want to use 4.0 (like me), use Upload form and add {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} or {{Cc-by-4.0}} in the permission field. Jee 03:14, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
@Bathes: Another thing. There is a term in v4.0 that prevents reusers from getting their licences revoked even if they don't provide attribution or state attribution in the wrong way. However, this applies 30 days from the date they spot the mistake, and not the date they republish the work or anything like that. This is one of few new terms I don't like about v4.0 (and why I don't use v4.0), and I hope you will take note of this too when you decide which CC version you want to license your works under. Is there a way to list all files within all the subcategories of a category?

For example, could I get a list of all files in Mountaineers from New Zealand including files in its subcategories (Edmund Hillary, etc.) and their own respective subcategories (Edmund Hillary statue, Mount Cook Village, etc.)?

One way is with Quick Intersection, by giving it only one category name to search on; for files and categories enter “6” and “14“ respectively in the Namespace field. You can set the desired depth of search in the tree, along with various other options. (It tells me that there are 51 files and 5 subcats in the above-mentioned cat.) Speedy deletion of two book cover images Divinity Saga

I need to mark two book covers that I uploaded for speedy deletion. The article that went with them were both deleted, therefore I need to make sure that the two images are also deleted. In wikipedia commons, both listed under DIvinity Saga, ebook covers, Divinity the Gathering and Divinity Transcendence need to be removed as well promptly then. Thank you.   • May I assume this is about File:Divinity-_The_Gathering_Book_One.jpg and File:Divinity- Transcendence Book Two.jpg? You describe them there as your own work. If that is accurate, you don't "need to make sure that the two images are also deleted": we host plenty of images that don't have Wikipedia articles. Anyway, it looks like you nominated them for deletion but chose to nominate them for the normal deletion process, not for speedy deletion (which uses the template {{Speedy}}; you used {{Delete}}. As uploader it is your prerogative to ask for deletion in the first few days after they are uploaded, so given your remarks here I will take you request for deletion at face value and treat it as a speedy deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 02:28, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello, a user removed my upload without a good reason. It is about a Flickr (CC BY-SA 2.0) upload. The user did not notify me on the removal and now ignores my requests for further explanation. LGPLv2

For LibPGF.PNG:  I needed LGPLv2 as license. This version exists, but {{LGPL}} is redirected to {{LGPLv2.1+}}. As there was no better template I subst:'ed the 2.1 version, subst:'ed the LGPL system message in the result, and eventually subst:'ed the 2.1 link, replacing 2.1 by 2 in the output incl. some copy and paste from the original GNU LGPL 2.0 page. Media RSS feeds for POTD and Featured pages

At Commons:Feeds there are interesting feeds for Commons:Picture of the day, Category:Featured pictures, and more. The feeds provided are classical RSS feeds. I couldn't find w:Media RSS feeds, though. My goal is to have new pictures loaded to my desktop automatically using Variety. I posted a picture on Wikipedia Commons for a page I am working on. Initially I did not give the correct source information, but I went back and fixed the source for the image that I need. How do I know now that the source is correct and that it won't get deleted?

As such, this document (or any part of it) may not be reproduced, distributed or published without our prior written consent," so there may be a problem here. Either this is {{PD-ineligible}} or it's a potential copyright violation, and I hesitate to say which (strikes me a close to the threshold of copyrightability). In either case, unless you have written permission, you seem to have violated the terms of use under which you accessed the document (not my issue, just mentioning). You might go to Commons:Village pump/copyright for a more informed opinion on whether a diagram like this would qualify for copyright or not.

Deleting files

I believe I read that it's impossible to delete images once uploaded. Is that correct? I ask because at Category:No Gun Ri Massacre, I uploaded duplicate files in two cases. The two images were first uploaded with poorly chosen filenames. I uploaded each again to improve the filenames. I'd like to delete the originals if possible. Thanks very much. Changing categories

Hello. I have come across a category (Category:North Yorkshire Moors) that I think has the wrong name. Unfortunately the name I think it should have (Category:North York Moors) already exists with a soft redirect to the first category. The reason I want to change them is that the name is North York Moors because that is what the corresponding Wikipedia article is called. What is the best way of swapping the categories? Uploading New Files

I've put some work into improving consistency of the borders in the International Maritime Signal Flags (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_maritime_signal_flags). But when I went to upload the files at Wikimedia Commons, I encountered a couple of problems:

(1) My existing user name and password (at least as I had documented it in my password manager) was not recognized. I tried the "Forgot Password" link with several combinations of username and password -- but never received the password reset e-mail. Eventually, I created a new account. (2) When I went to upload the first modification at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ICS_Alpha.svg, I saw a notice stating "You cannot overwrite this file."

Alternately, I'd appreciate any insight as to why I'm seeing the "You cannot overwrite this file message" and, if I'm correct that it's a new-account restriction, when it will disappear. How can I upload a photo I ow to Wikipedia, without Wikipedia branding it as copyright violation because it was owned by my website?

Permissions email - about how long until image is up?

Hi,

An image was sent to the permissions-commons at wikimedia email address, on 14 March 2014 by Carnegie Wave Energy Limited.

Description: "CETO-Unit.jpg – as attached, Image of Carnegie Wave Energy’s CETO unit as it will appear in the Perth Wave Energy Project off Garden Island, Western Australia". It's different from older images of CETO on Commons (2010-2011).

  • It can often take a couple of weeks. There are only a small number of people who go through the OTRS mail.
  • For the future: you can upload an image and mark it with {{OTRS pending}}. If you do that, though, make sure the OTRS email you send references the name of the image as uploaded. - Jmabel ! talk 03:37, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

In need of bash-script

I am in need of a bash-script for cleaning up a lot of svg-files on Wikimedia Commons. There are here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Invalid_SVG. I have asked somewhere else but that didn't turn out well. They couldn't help me all the way: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=5134511#post5134511. I am editing a svg-file from Wikimedia Commons. The id's of the code runs like:

  • id="1"

  • id="123"
  • id="1234"
  • id="12345"
  • id="123456"
  • id="1234567"
  • id="12345678" etc.

The filenames simply become too large. I want it to be:

  • id="1"
  • id="2"
  • id="3"

Stupid idea, not tested: On Windows the rsvg-convert tool can convert SVG to SVG. Maybe it can do that also on your platform. If rsvg-convert groks those monstrous IDs at all it should fix them, after all XML IDs cannot start with a digit. But you have to check what else it does, it might replace text + fonts by paths or cause other undesirable effects. Or you could create a script in any programming language you like, awk should be good enough for this job. –Be..anyone (talk) 15:21, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Peter Oakley.svg

Since when is my drawing of a real subject (not somebody's invention) not my copyright? The administrator's justification for deleting this particular drawing was "derivative work of peter.jpg". How else could I prove that the depicted person was indeed that person if the drawing hadn't been based on any reference photo? Every drawing of a real subject is a derivative work of that subject. Are people no more free to draw reality? The whole reason that I made my own drawing rather than uploaded the photo which I used for reference is precisely because I respected copyrights. So deleting it on grounds of copyright violation seems rather mindless. Even in court proceedings happening "behind closed doors", where taking photographs of people is prohibited for reasons more important than copyright, drawing them is not. No one's copyright extends on images recorded in somebody else's mind; no law may regulate thinking.

  • Sadly, when a drawing derives from someone else's photo, it is considered derivative work. Obviously, this doesn't apply to a drawing from life (the courtroom example you give), and is no problem with a drawing derived from one's own photo. It' a trickier question when someone draws someone based on numerous photos by different people, much as it's a trickier question when someone writes an article that is a loose synthesis of other articles: somewhere along the way the line is crossed between copying one particular expression of a fact (the person's appearance) and a particular expression of the idea (one particular image). In those cases, it becomes a judgement call, and not always an easy one. But if your image is basically a drawing of a photo, and someone else owns the copyright on the photo, their permission would be needed (as well as your own) to license your drawing. - Jmabel ! talk 17:38, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

I am a photographer and did take the photo and have full copyrigth on them and am happy to share give this photo to Wikipedia. This is to protect your rights, so to be sure that nobody uses your images without your permission. See COM:OTRS for the procedure. Der Uploader ist nicht der Rechteinhaber, sprich Fotograf der Bilder. Der Fotograf selbst befindet sich gerade in einem Rechtsstreit mit der Stadt Ingelheim indem er jede Verwendung seiner Bilder in anderen Kontexten untersagt. Deshalb bitte ich um eine sehr schnelle Löschung.

Bei diesem Bild: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apsis_der_Aula_Regia.jpg?uselang=de-formal ist der Urheber falsch angegeben, hier genügt es, diesen zu korrigieren. Es handelt sich beim Fotografen um Klaus Benz.

Es gibt drei Löschverfahren:
  1. Normal mit {{delete}} gekennzeichnet, mindestens eine Woche Diskussion (für Einsprüche, Zustimmung, etc.), kann jahrelang dauern bis ein Admin entscheidet.
  2. Schnell mit {{speedy}} gekennzeichnet, für eindeutige Fälle, dauert nicht jahrelang.
  3. WMF offiziell, einstweilige Verfügung hat WMF erreicht und wurde nicht als offensichtlich unsinnig in Ablage, rund befördert.

Ja, auf z.B. der Seite File:Rekonstruktionsmodell_der_Kaiserpfalz_Ingelheim.jpg klick auf editieren, dann Vorlage {{delete|Grund}} oder {{speedy|Grund}} einfügen, wie auf den Vorlageseiten erklärt — hoffentlich, falls da die Übersetzung fehlt, sag hier bescheid :-} Punkt 3 ist für Urheberrechtsverletzungen, wo die WikiMedia Foundation eine Löschaufforderung erhalten und für korrekt befunden hat. Why do you ask whether you may upload it after uploading? Anyhow, the card itself does not look copyrightable. The headshot might be, however, and it may still be copyrighted (by the photographer's heirs, for example). It borders on de minimis, too, but does not quite reach it. Copyright help regarding File:Spicy Mystery Stories Sept 1937.jpg

There is a template for US works published between 1923 and 1963 with copyright not renewed, as seen at the file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spicy_Mystery_Stories_October_1936.jpg , yet that didn't appear as one the pulldown options when I uploaded the similar file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spicy_Mystery_Stories_Sept_1937.jpg.

Any idea why this image and a couple of dozen like it were marked by flickr2commons on wmflabs as needing review (using {{Flickrreview}} with no arguments)? permission from the artist

I am making a page for a comic strip and would like to post an image of the characters and a picture of a book. I have asked the artist myself if I could make him a page before I started. Let the artist send permission, including the free license they want to use, to COM:OTRS. Be sure to tell them that this means that anyone can use the pictures for any purpose, including changing them and using them commercially. pictures from the internet

I am confused about the copyright law. I am creating a page for a cartoonist who's art is in the public domain (I found his art in Google images). His work is also under a copyright with a syndicate. I asked a question earlier about uploading the pictures and was told that the artist needs to put the picture under free license. After many thousands categorisation edits (4,631) as a newbie, doing my best to learn, you note that I have had only three comments. Then User talk:Roland zh‎ gave me at least 34 notifications in one day (those red things that appear by my name at the top), that when I clicked on them I found they were obscure and weren't helpful. He hasn't ever even posted on my talk page. That many red numbers to figure out at once is not possible for me. I've created many hundreds of categories correctly, improving as I learned my way and correcting my mistakes. User talk:Roland zh‎'s blitz of 34 red numbers were hard to understand and seemed like a mean thing to do. I don't want to experience that again. Best for me to avoid categorization and other Commons work. I can look at the wonderful pictures anyway and make subpages for myself, without risking User talk:Roland zh‎'s wrath. Those notifications are just things telling you about reverts, thanks and talk page notifications. They're not warnings or criticisms, they are generated automatically whenever something like that happens. If someone alters a lot of pages, then yes, you might get a lot of notifications. I see three comments from Roland on your talk page - those are actual attempts to communicate with you or leave you comments. No harrassment has happened here. I am sad to see you decide to quit because of this - we were all new once, we all made mistakes and we all ruffled a few feathers. Please reconsider. -mattbuck (Talk) 16:34, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

The "advice/criticism" offered by User:Roland zh‎ was singularly unhelpful, referring to a large amount of abstract category jargon that did not explain at all why an image labelled "temple" should be categorized as a "church". It also implied that I haven't made efforts to understand the category issues. Considering all of my over 4,000 categorizations have been correct, except for User talk:Roland zh‎'s complaints and undecipherable "advice", I see User talk:Roland zh‎ as unwilling to offer useful help to a newbie but rather seems to want to discourage me. Also, much of my work has been to reduce over categorization by categorizing specifically. It appears my efforts here aren't appreciated but rather condemned. We try to avoid over-categorisation - so if a photo is in a category for a particular temple, it doesn't need to be in more generic categories. I am sure that despite the 34 changes you spoke of, you have done some good work. We only learn through experience, and as long as you do things in good faith there is no harm in being wrong once in a while. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:52, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Just to clarify the technical issues here (as against how they were handled):

  • Unfortunately, in some cases if someone does the same thing to 34 files it results in 34 notifications. (Once you observe that the notifications are effectively all about one thing, there is usually no need to look into all 34.)
  • Our categories work differently from (for example) Flickr tags. If something is tagged with a precise category, we leave out any corresponding less precise category. (There are a few minor exceptions, but it's probably not worth going into.) For example, we wouldn't put Category:New York City on a picture of the Empire State Building, because it would have a more specific Category:Empire State Building; similarly, if it has Category:Empire State Building interior, we'll leave out Category:Empire State Building.

Also: I've been here practically since the beginning, I have probably 30,000+ pictures I've uploaded, I know the category system pretty well, and people still often can improve my initial set of categories. Expect that this is a collaborative project, that your content will be edited, and that most (though admittedly not all) edits will be improvements. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Political Maps

I edited a map of Europe I found on the internet. I know wikimedia commons policy on using and altering bits of other people's work, but were talking about a map. A map with countries on it. Does it still apply there?   • Yes, it does apply. Maps are generally copyrighted, with all rights reserved. The only exceptions would be a very old map (e.g. first published pre-1923 in the U.S.) or one where rights have been explicitly released (e.g. the policy for all works produced by U.S. federal government employees as part of their work). Copyright help regarding File:Archive Header template malformatting bug.png

How many carefully worded petitions must I write to help the community delete one little CSS parameter in an edit-protected Wikipedia template? This petition for establishing the correct copyright information of my screenshot to prove existence of the resulting bug is one of them. Is there something wrong with me that I think that this process is counterproductive and over the top?

It's only semi-protected, I replaced the TOC-line by m:Template:TOCright, and apparently this does not break the few pages where I checked it, but I can't tell if it helps anywhere. I fixed the categories/license of your screenshot here. If you have a test page, where that fails, simply discuss it on m:Template talk:Archive header. 2. You're right, the template is only semi-protected. I have just noticed this.
3. Your solution merely buries the problem deeper from one template into another. But it's actually good that you brought TOC-line to attention because it behaves in the same faulty way, so it needs to be fixed too. I intend to accomplish it by injecting the following CSS: max-width:40%;min-width:30em;. Is that good?
4. One affected page: m:Talk:Terms of use/Paid contributions amendment/Archives/2014-03-07. (Exactly as seen in the screenshot.)
5. That's what I do. I discuss this problem on m:Template talk:Archive header. I came here only because my screenshot "copyright" licence threatened me with deleting the screenshot in 7 days. I didn't expect to discuss the template.

Commons is full of obscure Orwellian stuff, {{Cc-by-nc-sa}} is an example. It arranges for the speedy self-destruction of the allegedly "non-free" upload, so far it's fine, because NC is not good enough here. But it also refuses to show the proper:  license explicitly permitting certain kinds of uses starting with a copy, and it puts the NC file in a "copyright violation" category. There never was any copyright violation, NC is just not permitted here.
Apparently screenshots were a major issue years ago, there are special pages (templates, discussions, policy, categories, the works) all trying to do something with screenshots. Therefore I guessed that categories for "MediWiki bugs" (turned out to be "MediWiki errors") and "MediaWiki screenshots" must already exist for your screenshot.
Verdy_p fixed the Meta-version of {{TOCright}} using your 36em and max-width:50% suggestions. If that's still not good enough we're running out of template wizards, the original was a Pathoschild.

Uploading Geogebra demonstrations

I write some geometry-related articles and would like to add interactive GeoGebra sheets that demonstrate the geometric constructions. It is possible to upload the demos to the GeoGebra site, but this would require an external link. Uploading screenshots directly from the clipboard

In case the answer to the previous question is no, the 2nd-best option is to take screenshots. It is easy to copy the GeoGebra screen to the clipboard, but currently I have to copy from the clipboard to a file, save the file, then upload the file to Commons. If the program can export in SVG format (or something easily convertible to it), that would be the best way to go. Raster images, including screenshots, are not very suitable for geometric diagrams or similar illustrations.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:25, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I need help please. I'm trying to add a picture of the cover of "Skinny Bastard" (a book) for an article on Wikipedia. As far as I know, this image is in the public domain for free usage. It is the one from the website www.skinnybastard.net. I've no idea who owns the copyright or how to contact them. But a notice came up when I uploaded the picture, saying it may be deleted in seven days. The cover of another book by the same author has been used on Wikipedia. So why not this one too. Am I going about this the wrong way? The instructions on copyright seem complicated, I need it simplified. Thanks if you help me.

  • "A web page about my late father" is pretty vague, and you wouldn't normally have a page about someone on Commons (and I don't see you ever having had any galleries here) so I assume this is about the photos you uploaded in April 2012, such as File:Monza at speed.jpg. If I've misunderstood, please correct me. The issue is pretty straightforward: these are presumably copyrighted photos and it is likely that someone other than you owns the copyright. The deletion discussion was here. Your talk page shows that you were informed in a timely fashion, but apparently you did not comment, if you think the nominator's rationale was wrong.
  • The fact that the subject of the photo was your father has nothing to do with copyright. To upload someone else's copyrighted photo here, you would need a COM:OTRS-style release from the actual photographer (or the heir to the photographer's intellectual property rights).
  • If there are any such images where you actually are the photographer yourself, then the matter is simpler, although with such old photos (and with you not having made other substantive contributions to Commons, so it's not like we know your work) I'd strongly recommend going through the COM:OTRS process even for your own photos to make a clear assertion of copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

It looks more like IPA to me than Cyrillic, but anyhow: when you're in the edit box, there is a little keyboard icon in the top right. It will open a menu where you can select the keyboard to use. You should select "Use native keyboard", or press Ctrl-M. --rimshottalk 19:10, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

HI, before uploading an image that could be directly deleted, i prefer ask about it.
Here is the corporate data from SNK company on an image taken from a flyer with severals pages. I want to use it as a source. There are only text inside, and more, it's only basic data.

At File:Amethyst.jpg, an amethyst ring was uploaded over an amethyst slice. The first image fits much better with the file name. The UNEP Knowledge Base talks about "open access", but on their terms and conditions page it boils down to non-commercial and no derivative use. Apparently you went for "own work", and your adaption of their diagram is visually different, and another language. You could add a reference to ISBN 978-92-807-2887-3 on File:Esquema de desastre.JPG. If you stick to "own work" you define the license, e.g., {{CC0}}. Maybe others here have better suggestions, for starters, does a simple text diagram like this need any license at all? I've no idea. –Be..anyone (talk) 17:04, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

Posted under wrong category

I have posted few photos of half breed dogs and put them into "Dog breeds" category, because "half breed" category isn't created. This is my first time here. Then I noticed there is "mixed breeds" category and I have to move my photos there, but I don't know how to do that. To delete and upload again is an option but I was wondering if there is another easier way to do that.

Yes, there are simpler solutions. Go to the three file pages, e.g., click File:Jo_aka_Hovawart.jpg, then click "edit", in the edit box find Category:Dog breeds, change it to Category:Mixed breeds, add a comment in the comment box, e.g., "fixed cat", and click save. But apparently Category:Mixed breeds does not yet exist, so pick something that works. ;-) –Be..anyone (talk) 12:21, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Another option is to use HotCat, a gadget that should be available whenever you’re logged in—unless you disabled it in your Preferences. By clicking the ± (plus-or-minus) symbol beside a category name on the file page, you can activate an edit-field to change it: a pop-up menu shows existing categories as you type, and marks your entry with a check if valid, or a cross if not. (When editing only one category at a time, this saves a trip to the Edit page.) Be as specific as you can, and where appropriate add as many categories as cover the content of the image, not just the principal subject.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:42, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

  • That would make it almost certainly still copyrighted, unless the photo is much older and was published much earlier. If it was published for the first time in the UK in 1948, it would be copyrighted until 70 years after the author's death. The book will likely have a page of photo credits, possibly under “Acknowledgements”. If it can be shown that the source was public-domain or otherwise free of copyright, or that the photographer died before 1944, the file can be hosted here. Failing that, I suggest uploading it to the English Wikipedia under a fair-use rationale. For the images that are published as “all rights reserved“ or similarly restricted, informal permission isn’t enough for them to be hosted here. You will have to ask the owners to e-mail OTRS, confirming their copyright and specifically releasing the images under a suitable licence, such as CC-BY-SA.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:58, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi MoHasanie. The releases we have on OTRS that support our Commons:Batch_uploading/Airliners project are for the images available on the different user's photostream. You should be an OTRS volunteer to add OTRS tickets to any photo, if you were to do this yourself, the photo is likely to get flagged as a problem. I have a handy script that sorts these out and even trims off the watermark bars, if there are new photos being added, the script will update what we have. Please add a note to the batch upload project page if there are images from a particular user you would like to see uploaded and myself or Russavia will probably be the ones to check it out and double-check the OTRS release if necessary. Large number of images noisy

Category:Grant's Anatomy plates I've uploaded a large number of medical illustrations from a 1962 book that are in the public domain. Unfortunately somewhere in the scanning [or uploading] process a large amount of noise has been introduced. This isn't visible when the images are viewed at full scale, or when they are on my computer. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way in which wikipedia converts png files to thumbnails? The solution I found was uploading the files as jpegs instead. Is there any way to batch delete the images so that I can upload the jpeg alternatives at once? Could with delete privileges fix this for me all at once? Looking at File:Grant 1962 14.png, I don't see any noise, just the original printer dots and the grain of the paper. There are some interference patterns when looking at it initially, but these seem to disappear after a moment (presumably this is my browser rendering it). -mattbuck (Talk) 11:53, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

There are some more I really would like to replace, but these are the worst ones. Could this also be resolved by running som bot on them to optimize them for Wikipedia. I uploaded them in as high a resolution and quality as possible from my scanner, maybe it was a bit too high to have the images at 80mb? -- CFCF (talk) 14:37, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
Reproducing images from previously printed sources is a tricky business. The tartan- or mesh-like texture is an interference pattern created by combining two or more waves—here the halftone screen used in the original printing process and the pixel grid in the scanner—and are called moiré. If the patterns are only strongly apparent in thumbnails of certain sizes, I wouldn't worry about them too much. You can often weaken moirés by scanning at a lower resolution, but this also results in a loss of detail, especially for the text and linework in illustrations like these; the same goes for blurring the image afterward. The best solution is sometimes to process the halftoned portion separately, recombining it with the linework after blurring or whatever—but of course this takes considerably more time & effort. Scanning at a slight angle and then straightening the picture often helps. Sometimes varying the effective scan resolution just a little can make a big difference to the nature & intensity of the pattern. (In the pre-digital era we used to hold a piece of plate-glass between the copyboard and the lens of a camera; slowly rotating or tilting it back and forth would often blur the image just enough to subdue the moiré … but I’m showing my age.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:55, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

I don't have the expertise to recombine linework etc., but I will keep those things in mind when I get hold of rare books, that I might only have access to for a few hours and can't scan multiple times. What is the code to insert to properly attribute Flikr source, copyright, and license?

What is the coding necessary to update the page.

A reviewer rejected the page because it was not properly attributed, stating: A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Deanna Geiger and Janine Nelson Geiger v. Kitzhaber.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

It looks like you already found the answer and added the link to the source. That should solve it. However, there may be another problem. The photo looks like it's taken in a private place. It's not obvious that the pictured persons gave consent to the free distribution and reuse of this photo. One of the Flickr Bots claimed that the version here is not exactly the same as the version on Flickr. Out of curiosity I downloaded both and got this:

Plan B, as long as I have the "correct" image in my download folder I can simply upload it as "new version" to make the review bot happy. But I'm still curious how the 1346445 bytes in those two in essence identical images turned out to be different. –Be..anyone (talk) 02:40, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Just in case an explanation how en:FFmpeg MD5 works: FFmpeg handles images as videos with one frame. It converts the video to a raw format, without audio, subtitles, or meta-data. After that it computes the MD5 on the raw pixel data, e.g., a lossless PNG of a given JPEG would end up with the same MD5, no matter how much compressed the PNG is. OTOH lossy JPEGs at different compression levels would result in different raw image hashes.
For the purposes of your bot that's presumably irrelevant, you could as well check if the binary file matches its Flickr source exactly. I'm still curious what caused the difference in this case, and why, with the same size for both variants let's get a smaller JPEG can't be the explanation. Was the source on Flickr changed after the upload here? –Be..anyone (talk) 11:13, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation :) From the diff above, my guess for the issue is that the image is null edited on "2013-10-25T17:20:40-07:00" and for some reason it is uploaded to flickr, replacing the original. Black bear map

The map showing ranges of black bears is incorrect as concerns the state of Florida. Their range is further south into the center of the state as well as further towards the East coast. It should be much larger than indicated. Last fall a black bear appeared in New Smyrna Beach's downtown, and they appear commonly in Deland, even on the campus of Stetson University. I guess it’s File:American Black bear map.png, which illustrates the enWP article. Template:Inaccurate-map-disputed can be used to draw users’ attention to the issue; it should be accompanied by a detailed explanation on the Talk page. It would be most helpful if a link could be provided to an authoritative map or research paper depicting the range: perhaps from the state wildlife or parks services, or the zoölogy department at Stetson or another Florida university, to serve as a guide for the illustrator who takes it on. Note also that range maps are usually intended to cover ‘normal’ (rather than extreme) occurrences of the subject, in case any of the mentioned appearances may be attributable to unusual environmental circumstances, or otherwise considered ‘outliers’.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:38, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
