Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

ich habe keine ausreichende Lizenz zu dem Thema Symbol: Schriftfarbe mit ein Bild. Das Bild habe ich aus goohle.com. Da ich mir dachte Setz es rein wenn jemand z.B. in Arbeiten oder Prüfungen es falsch hat, kann er sich das Bild angucken und weiß dann bescheid. Ich hoffe es ist OK, schließlich habe ich es aus guten Willen gemacht und hoffe ich komme damit durch! Sonst würde es nach 7 Tagen gelöscht und das möchte ich ungern, aber ändern kann ich es nicht!

Der Color-picker erreicht wahrscheinlich keine Schöpfungshöhe. {{PD-ineligible}} heißt dann die gesuchte Lizenzvorlage. Als Quelle bitte immer den direkten (vollen) Link angeben.

Battle of the Wizards, commons Vs Penyulap

I'm trying to upload a series of 6 artworks for userboxes, however the commons wizard is too dumb to understand the subtle differences in animation timing and thinks that some of the artworks in the series are the same. Silly bot !

The artworks are fundamentally different,

Level 4 goes here.

<- at the time of writing the request the commons thinks "PenLift Building 1 Level 4.gif" and "PenLift Building 1 Level G.gif" are the same, and has put one in the wrong place.

How do I defeat the Evil Wizard ? (I already tried pressing up up down kick punch punch.) Penyulap ☏

Are you _really_ sure the pictures you want to upload are different? AFAIK the wizard forbids uploading only byte-to-byte identical copies. Trycatch (talk) 09:39, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Rather than risk removing my foot from my mouth later, I just went and checked them all in my browser as well as in the painting program to look for save file blunders, but there are none. The file differences are subtle, but certainly significant. I had tried to upload multiple files using the wizard, it said 4 out of 6 failed, after that, it kept insisting that it didn't want Level G as it was the same as Level 4. Penyulap (talk)
As a faster fix, (I don't want to spend my life here), can 4 be renamed to G so that I can reupload 4 after I make invisible changes to the files that won't upload. Thanks Penyulap ☏

I fixed the problem by making much more significant changes, loading up the files with trash so that rather than a single byte of difference which the commons wizard can't detect, there was loads of trash it could detect. Commons Wizard (Zero) Penyulap (High Score) Penyulap ☏

Permissions limited to Wikipedia are not sufficient for files to be uploaded to Commons, because Commons only hosts files which can be used by anyone for any purpose. The current logo, File:RUAG AG logo.svg, is too simple to be protected by copyright, so no permission is needed. This Logo is a registered trade mark, as all other logos like IBM, Coca-Cola, Apple in Wikipedia. But how I have to declare thad? It is somehow protected but I do not find how to do that. And I know Wikipedia since years, but this here is very complicated....

Ich bin nicht Rechtsanwalt, aber ich weiss, dass das Logo beim Amt für geistiges Eigentum registriert ist und einem gewissen Schutz unterworfen ist. Ich darf kein Logo einer fremden Firma nutzen ohne Rückfrage, das ist immer so. Der Rest ist für mich Haarespalterei ohne echten Nutzen. Vor allem hier, wo ich nicht weiss was machen. IBM, Coca-Cola und weiss ich wer hat hier sein Logo im zugehörigen Artikel. Nun weiss ich aber nicht wie ich es nun anstellen soll. I think you are mixing up copyright and trademark. As LX states, it's likely not copyrighted due to its simplicity. But without being a law expert either, im pretty sure it's trademarked. Yes, there are; please look at Category:Userbox templates. There are many more at the English Wikipedia than there are here; most of our userboxes are simple "This user has this ability" messages, and we don't really have ones that Wikipedia does, like "This user eats bagels" or "This user believes in the Flying Spaghetti Monster". SVG problems

I uploaded this SVG file recently. It is a map which reproduces an existing Commons file as SVG using Inkscape and OpenStreetmap data. The problem is that, depending on the program you are using for viewing, it shows differently. In the thumbnail lots of elements are missing, while it shows just fine when I look at it directly in the browser or in Inkscape. I have played around with layers, used different export options. I don't have a lot of SVG experience and can't figure out what it could be. Does anybody have an idea what the problem is? --Hansbaer (talk) 06:57, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

The photo is public domain. Why block upload?

I want to donate Clair Marlo's press photo from her website up to Wikimedia Commons, but you keeps rejecting it. I don't know why, her website says:

"This image is public domain and may be freely shared."

I try to upload the photo about 3 times. I renamed the file "Clair_Marlo_Official.jpg". I check this choice in upload wizard:

I believe this work is freely licensed or legally in the public domain. I understand that if I do not add the necessary licensing information in a timely fashion, the file may be deleted.

Maybe this is the problem? It always returns with this error:

I think it is the upload wizard since I checked with another upload form for this image and there is no duplicate at all. However, why is this image in the public domain? Did you take this photo? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:55, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
It appears to be an image hosted on the personal web site belonging to the person on the photo, so I would guess that the person released the photo to the public domain herself. However, note that the Wikipedia article on the person, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clair Marlo, was deleted because of lack of notability, so maybe one could argue that the image is out of scope for Commons. --Stefan4 (talk) 17:01, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

She may be notable on another Wikipedia than the English version (which has much stricter sourcing requirements than many other Wikipedia's). And even if it's not used on a Wikimedia site it could still serve towards an educational function. SpeakFree (talk) 18:56, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Uploading a photo that is not my own work.

I would like to contribute a photo of the Seger Ellis orchestra from 1941 to the Wikipedia article about Seger Ellis. Mt father played in that big band, and he passed away in 2010. I found the photo of the Seger Ellis orchestra in his memorabilia, with the names of all the band members listed on the back in my father's handwriting. It is obviously a professional photo, not taken by my father. Is it permissible for me to upload this photo to Wikimedia Commons and use it in Wikipedia? - unisigned

Conflicting Image Summary

Hello,

I recently uploaded an image to the Commons (see here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Yates_New_York_2010.jpg ) It is accurately licensed and is confirmed under the OTRS system. However, when I log out of my Wikimedia account and delete my cookies from my computer, the summary in the link above shows the OTRS pending template and the Flickr Review pending template, instead of the updated summary as seen in the above link when I’m logged in to the Commons and Wikipedia. This old version of the summary is only seen on the Wikipedia link (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:David_Yates_New_York_2010.jpg ), not the actual description page on the Commons. This only happens when I delete my cookies when logging out. It does not happen to any other image I have viewed. I’ve tried viewing the image summary across different browsers (when logged out of Wikimedia/pedia), but I still see the OTRS pending template, when I should be seeing the OTRS confirmed and Flickr Review confirmed template instead. But when I log into Wikimedia and my cookies haven't been deleted, the image summary is up-to-date again (with the OTRS confirmed template etc..)!

Can you tell me why this is the case? And do non-Wikipedia members view the image summary as it should be or its out of date version? Thanks. Poppersocks (talk) 08:09, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Name of artist who restored Pergamon´s mosaic front as seen at Pergamon Museeum in Berlin

Sorry but I cannot find a place to sign in and would like to very much for future use. Could you help me please?

Is there some information of who restored the mosaics in front of the altar? I was brought up with the impression that my father, Peter Heinrich Hermann Jungebloedt (+ app. 1985) who dedicated his artistic life to mosaic works, and after WW2 lived in the Russian sector, was in charge of the elaborate work.

Is it my unreliable imagination (I am 84 years old) or did I see information at the site when I visited it in 1978, attributing the work to him?

I would appreciate any information about this subject.

The images I've used and uploaded are from public domain websites that are for sure okay to use publicly. A certain image of a band member I've used was released by the band's own Twitter account. The bottom of the site says "©2012 Alternative Press. All rights reserved.". Is there any reason to assume otherwise? The rights to the album artwork probably lie with the label or the band. You would have to ask them whether they are willing to release them under a free license. --rimshottalk 07:35, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes. It seems you have confused the terms published (available to the general public) and public domain (owned by the general public). They are different words that mean different things. A work that is in the public domain is not protected by copyright. Publishing a work is not the same as placing it into the public domain. In fact, the very purpose of copyright is to enable authors to publish works while still retaining control of how they are distributed. —LX (talk, contribs) 22:14, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

If yes, I will send it by mail to permissions-commons wikimedia.org. If an agreement in Turkish can not be accepted, please guide me what to do in a step by step manner. I appreciate the detailed help pages provided but it is really hard for me to give the necessary time to read them all and understand properly. The right to use the said photograph all over the world for publicity purposes has been given to the publisher Dogan Kitap and we want to use this photograph on the Wikipedia article of Elif Shafak. Written permission is required, language doesnt matter. However, using the photo "for publicity purposes" is insufficient permission. Permission must be given that anyone can use the photo for any purpose including commercial purposes (inside of course the laws of the intented country of publications, i.e. personality rights). --Martin H. The fact that you can find a file all over the Internet usually doesn't say anything about the copyright status of a work. This looks like it might be a patent drawing. It's drawn and numbered in the same style as the drawing Edward Link's other patents. I couldn't find the specific patent, but if you can, check it for copyright notices, and if it doesn't contain any, tag the file as {{PD-US-patent-no notice}}. —LX (talk, contribs) 06:33, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Beim aufrufen ihrer Seite musste ich feststellen das eines meiner Bilder zum löschen in 7 tagen vorgeschlagen wurde da die Uhrheberrechte anscheinend nicht Eindeutig geklärt sind. Ich habe dieses Bild von meiner Vater erhalten, er ist der Urheber dieses Bildes. Da ich ihn auch als Quelle angegeben habe verstehe ich nicht was das Problem ist. Bitte um Hilfe.

What copyright rules apply as owner of a unique painting

This concerns a photograph of a unique painting (not a print) owned by me.

This artwork was created by http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Prentl_%28CSU%29

It was given to my family (i.e. we own it) by its creator in 1965.

I am both the current owner of the painting and the photographer.

I would like to post an image on the creator's wikipedia page as well as on the page

Update: After researching this, I believe that as owner of the work, I have the commercial rights to the copyright, but not the moral rights. I believe this means that I can license the free use of the work as long as the original creator is referenced by attribution. His family still owns the moral rights to the work until it passes into the public domain 70 years after his death, but the family can require no more than proper attribution under those moral rights.

The owner of a painting does not own the rights to it - the original artist or their heirs do - unless they were transferred by a legal contract. Because this artist died recently, their works are not in the public domain in the source country; and because their works were almost certainly created after 1923, they are also in copyright in the United States under the URAA. Hence you have no right to redistribute any photo of the work, unless the painter's heirs are willing to release the work under a free license. Dcoetzee (talk) 13:32, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

I found a workaround for the Copyright. How do I add the classification and how do I reflect the change on the page with my contribution? Sorry If I don't follow the procedures you have to address this issues.

To replace an image in the es.wikipedia article Peso colombiano, for example, you would edit that article page and replace the name of the image file that is there with the name of your new image file. However, that image doesn't seem to meet the conditions of the wording of the template PD-Colombia that is used with it. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:14, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
I have to admit that "a workaround for the copyright" sounded a bit scary, but File:1972-$1-Peso-Oro-Anverso.jpg is simply a more recent print of the same 1959 design shown in File:1 a.jpg. Since the original is in the public domain by the fourth case of {{PD Colombia}} (works by the government are protected for 50 after publication) and the more recent bill contains no modifications that are eligible for copyright protection, it should also be in the public domain, unless I'm mistaken. Hi Suzanne, if the photos were first published in the US before 1923, or before 1978 and there is no copyright notice on them (the name of the copyright holder and copyright year with a (C) mark), then they are probably fine to upload. For photos predating 1923, click Upload File on the left to use the Upload Wizard and choose "The copyright has definitely expired in the USA" then "First published in the United States before 1923". For files published between 1923 and 1978 with no copyright notice, do the same but afterwards edit the file description page and change the syntax "{{PD-1923}}" to instead read "{{PD-US-no-notice}}". Make sure that the permission allows you to publish the work under a free licence. There are instructions at COM:OTRS which you can follow. contributer email not provided for licensing issue

Alchemist-hp has some images I would like to use. They are listed as free art and permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. He does however ask that he be emailed. When I click on email link (email not actually listed), it takes me to a page that says I do not have the right to see the email becuase I am not a user. Do I need to register as a user to conform to the authors request but not requirement to reuse the image? What do you mean? The file is both hosted on Wikipedia (de:Datei:Rumex sp. 1.jpg) and on Commons (File:Rumex sp. 1.jpg).   • The problem is that "all manners relating to Wikipedia to include but not limited to uploading pictures" does not really cover the case. For starters, Commons is not Wikipedia, but, more importantly, Commons accepts only images that are either in the public domain or released under certain types of 'free license'. It's not at all clear for what images Bongino (or his campaign) owns copyright (vs. rights being owned by the photographer), nor that this letter authorizes you to release rights (as against merely uploading materials once rights have been released). I strongly recommend you look at COM:OTRS to see what such a release normally looks like. Note, especially, that the holder of rights should specify the license under which images are released. Note: it's possible that the OTRS people might consider the letter an adequate release but, for the reasons just expressed, I doubt it, and rather than simply forward the linked document to OTRS, I'd suggest that you try to get a more "normal" release and send that instead. - Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Yann, nearly all 160 files MIT had uploaded had something wrong with the license. A lot also had a typo in the source (EDY instead of EDU). I've batch edited them all yesterday. I've spend some time today making a fancy color index for these maps. I hope MIT is ok that I moved this template to a subpage of their account since the images belong to them. They still need categories though. Is there a way to use VisualFileChange.JS to use the file as a variable in a custom replace?--Vera (talk) 20:26, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Private Pictures sold on Auction website

What is the copyright status of what appears to be private family pictures (description says French tourists in India in 1938) that are being sold on an auction website dedicated to collectibles? Does stuff such as family pics displayed for sale on an auction website automatically fall into the public domain?

No, they don't automatically fall into the public domain. If they're being first published, they'll get a copyright term of life+x (70 for US and EU, 60 for India, 50 for China, etc.) like any other work, and in many places they'll get a special copyright just for being first published (Canada and the UK and probably some other places; I believe it's 25 years for the UK).--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:42, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Got It. Question - I am a 3rd party that has expressed written permission from the artist to use his copyrighted pieces of artwork in this article, of which there is current commercial interest and value of the originals and prints (artist is in many galleries around the world). Can I proceed on Wiki with photos throughout the article, which adds merit and understanding to the artists background & history and or should I dilute the article and not include any photographs of the images? Put differently, for inclusion on Wiki, the artist needs to give up his rights entirely to his work?

For inclusion on Wikimedia Commons, content must be in the public domain or published under a free license, allowing anyone to use it for any purpose. The author does not have to give up his rights entirely if he wants his works to be hosted here, but he does need to give up some of his rights to the specific works to be hosted here, including the right to control commercial use and derivative works. He can retain the right to be attributed, and he can require derivative works to be licensed in the same manner.
Some other Wikimedia projects, including English Wikipedia, accept limited use of non-free content for a specified context under fair use provisions. This is not an option available to Commons, because content in a general-purpose media repository by definition has no specific context. I'd like to add a photograph of a retired, very well known, highly awarded sports figure, to the article about him in Wikipedia. He is a friend of mine.

The only one who can issue a valid permission to use a photograph is the copyright holder. The copyright holder is normally the photographer, rather than the subject. Furthermore, a permission that only covers uploading to Commons is not sufficient. Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use for any purpose. Cover images of books

Urantia Foundation is the publisher of The Urantia Book currently translated into 14 languages. Most of these translations have an article on Wikipedia in particular language. Urantia Foundation asks me to upload the cover images of these books on Wikimedia to use such images as illustration for these articles on Wikipedia. What kind of license/permission should I use to prevent deletion of these images? Recently I have uploaded two such image files but they were deleted as a possible copyright violation. I believe File:English language.svg breaks the United States Flag Code that establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag of the United States. It is Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). This is a U.S. federal law. I think it should be speedy deleted. So no, it's not possible to speedy delete a file like this (speedy deletion is for obvious cases only), nominate it for regular deletion if you want. Z. B. hier: Category:Ermine (clothing) in art mit 3150 Bildern.
Blättert man nun trotzdem weiter, was man eigentlich nicht braucht, weil alle Bilder angeblich bereits angezeigt werden, folgt die, vermutlich richtige, Anzeige, in obigem Fall diese: "Es werden 215 von insgesamt 3.150 Dateien in dieser Kategorie angezeigt:"
Kann diese irreführende Angabe jemand umprogrammieren? Hilfreich wäre ja bereits, wenn statt der festen Angabe der Hinweis stünde, "es sind mehr als die angezeigten Bilder in dieser Kategorie enthalten". Scrapped ships

I am attempting to expand an article relating to ships built in a certain location on Wikipedia, and numerous ships have been scrapped or sunk. There are few photographs of some of these ships, could they be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as a historical image - many existed less than 150 years ago. There is no such license template on Commons as "historical image", you should have some explicit license template, some explicit reason from Commons:Licensing why the picture you want to upload is free. To cut a long story short, most of 150 year old pictures are free because of one reason or another, for 100-120 year old picture the situation is much more complicated -- sometimes it's very hard to understand if the picture in question is free or not (and you can't upload the picture, if you don't have a proof that it's free). If you know the photographer, and their date of death -- ok, it's easy to figure out if the picture is free or not. But in many cases you have no idea about the author, publication history and so on. There are {{PD-UK-unknown}} and similar templates for anonymous photos published more than 70 years ago, but it's sorta dangerous template -- it's hard to be really sure that the photo is really anonymous. --Trycatch (talk) 17:04, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Certainly, I considered it as a public image on HTC website but it appears to me, this upload is conflicting with the wikimedia policies. You need permission from HTC in order to submit it to Wikimedia Commons. Additionally, the image needs to be licensed under a free licence. Failure to do so will lead to deletion of the image. See COM:OTRS for instructions on how to obtain permission. --Stefan4 (talk) 23:53, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I have been tracking this image

I think that this image is a copyright violation. It is listed as public domain, but the painter is, I think, still alive. The image was likely taken from here. [4]. What do we do now? Screen Shot of a Free Reading Application was deleted

Added a screen shot of a Free Washington Post Social Reader for Facebook yesterday in an article I'm creating about social reader applications. This is link of the file I got while updating (Washington Post Social Reader.png)

Now here are the details which I could see on the deletion process (Screenshot of non-free content: Web site) (global usage; delinker log)

Now I'm not able to understand. Washington Post is offering it's news free, also Washington Post Social Reader for Facebook is offering free content, which people are allowed to post and share on their profiles. Washington Post and that reader are gratis free (i.e. could obtain them for no price), but Commons accepts only libre free content (content that can be reused for any purpose, redistributed, modified, and so on for free without strong restrictions). Read w:Gratis versus libre and Commons:Licensing. Generally, you can't upload website screenshots, because while you can obtain them for no price, such screenshots are still copyrighted if they were not explicitly released under a free license. --Trycatch (talk) 07:52, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Giovanni Bottesini

The German Wikipedia has a picture of the composer Giovanni Bottesini, taken around 1865: Datei:BottesiniTestore.jpg. The picture was taken more than 100 years ago and it is highly probable that the unknown photographer died more than 70 years ago.

Is it therefore allowable to transfer the file to Wikimedia Commons? And if it is, how can I do that? Sijtze Reurich (talk) 09:27, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Given the age of the photo, it is probably in the public domain in both the United States and Italy, which is what is required in order to upload the photo here. It is in the public domain in Italy because it was taken more than 20 years ago. There are, I believe, only two ways for it to be copyrighted in the United States:
  1. The photographer is not anonymous but identified and was still alive in 1942 and the photo wasn't published anywhere before 2003. Wikipedia sometimes states that a photographer is anonymous although this isn't the case.
  2. The photo remained unpublished at least until the end of 1922, was no longer unpublished by the end of 2002 and certain other conditions also apply.
Both situations seem highly unlikely to me, so I would assume that it is also in the public domain in the United States.
For the copyright status in Italy, you can use {{PD-Italy}} (although {{PD-old-70}} most likely also is true). For the copyright status in the United States, use {{PD-1923}} if it was published somewhere before 1923, or {{PD-US-unpublished}} if it was not published anywhere before 2003. --Stefan4 (talk) 14:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Leider habe ich unter der Lizenz keine Angabe gemacht und weiss nicht welche Angaben jetzt noch nötig sind, damit der Lizenzhinweis wegfällt und das Bild verwendet werden kann.

Using a photo straight from a photographer which is not online?

Hello,

I've never uploaded a photo before, so please forgive me... I'm currently trying to find a better picture for the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearless_Vampire_Killers_(band). I have been in contact with a photographer, Jennifer Dreier, who is a friend of the band and often takes photos of them, such as at live events or in photoshoots. She has agreed to release one of her photos under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license for me to use in the Wikipedia article.

However, the photo we have chosen to use is one which has not been published in any form yet - she has over 150gbs of pictures of them, and only a few have been ever put online or used. Because our conversation has taken part via Facebook messages, I don't have a way of easily sharing it (except maybe screenshots?) either.

I have asked her to email me with a consent letter (following a template on Wikipedia, which I can forward to the correct permissions address.) But whilst the email she uses is in her name (personal email deleted) it is not connected to any official site because she uses her Tumblr (lotsofpicturesandthings.tumblr.com) to publish pictures or allows the bands she has shot to do so, and word of mouth/the studio she works for to find jobs.

Basically, what is the easiest way for me to show that I have been given permission from the original photographer if the photo is not online on an website linked to the email? And what should I put in the 'Original source' area of the Upload form?

  • I've taken the liberty of deleting a personal email address; not usually a good thing to post here.
  • It would generally be best if she sends directly to the permissions address and cc's you.
  • We usually take OTRS permissions at face value; if someone is in doubt, they can presumably contact her at the Tumblr account to verify.
  • Source could be any of several things; I'd suggest "Photo by Jennifer Dreier (Contact: http://lotsofpicturesandthings.tumblr.com)".

North Korean Government photos?

I've come across a photo of a Korean People's Air Force MiG-29 with Kim Jong Un and members of Unit 1017 of the KPAF assembled in front of said jet. Since the Wikipedia article on the KPAF is quite short of photos of aircraft of the KPAF, I thought it would be a good idea to at least consider adding the photo to the article, but of course there's the issue of copyright - it was published by the North Korean government and has since cropped up all over the web.

Adding a photograph

I have some old photographs of (deceased) people whom I had previously written articles about on Wikipedia. In some cases, the photographs were personally given to me by the person's family. All the photographs are more than 60 years old and I have scanned them onto my computer.

Can I include these photographs in the appropriate articles... and if I can, then how do I do this...

The answer is "probably not". The copyright in most those cases will probably reside with the original photographer, and the copyright remains valid for 70 years (in most countries) after the photographer's death. There are some special cases, which you'll find at Commons:Licensing, but we would need positive evidence that one of those exceptions applies. Powers (talk) 19:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

If you mean Epicurus Wiki (I can't find anything called "wiki-epicurus"), you need to create a local account there as it is not a Wikimedia Foundation project. Disable certain signature styles

Is there any way to disable cartain signature styles, such as those of Peter Weis at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:WikiProject_Public_Domain/German_stamps_review? Only if he would wrap a <span class="peterweis user-signature">...signature here...</span> around his signature. I suggested this to him before but maybe you could do it again. In this specific case, he would only have to add class="peterweis user-signature" to his outer span element.
If this is done, you could use a custom CSS to restyle his signature. If he is not inclined to change it, we will have to use JavaScript but this is slower. -- RE rillke questions? 23:22, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Offering code to turn your signature back to a normal style is not against a policy. If you disagree with my behaviour, feel free to suggest and discuss such a policy.

The CSS class would only affect your signature's styling for users who add a matching rule in their own settings. It would not affect the look for you or for users who have not opted to filter out your signature styling. Several users find your signature distracting and annoying. You've refused polite requests to make your signature less obtrusive. You've also refused requests to add invisible markup to your signature which would give others the option of rendering your signature in a less hysterical manner, but which would not affect you in any way. Insisting that you have the right to cause needless annoyance simply because there is no policy mentioning this precise type of disruption is not helpful. We don't have policies that codify every silly little thing you shouldn't do. If we did, they would be so long that nobody would bother reading them. That said, Commons:Talk page guidelines#Markup discourages excessive use of markup on talk pages, and in my opinion, your signature runs afoul of that. Image copyright problem

Hello. Earlier I uploaded these two images (File:Emily Symons.jpg and File:Jordy Lucas.jpg) via the flickr upload bot. I had asked the photorapher if they could be used on the project and he changed the license - even after I double checked everything. Then he later informed me that he had already sold all the copyrights to these images and all of the others in his set to a print publication - meaning that he should not of endorsed their usage on the project in the first place. I have never had this happen before and obviously they need to be removed as the copyright holder did not endorse their usage.Raintheone (talk) 00:41, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Photo may need tagging

I came here from this help desk post. User:Sheled Umlal uploaded File:Otway and Fan.jpg. Per this post, it appears that User:Sheled Umlal is the "fan" doing the peace sign in the image File:Otway and Fan.jpg. Since User:Sheled Umlal is in the photo, it seem unlikely that he could have pushed the camera button and, thus, it is unlikely that he is the copyright holder of this work as claimed on the uploaded image page. Clicking the shutter does not always determine the copyright holder. For example, If I do the settings and adjustments on my camera, hand the camera to someone, tell them exactly where to point it, and set up the pose for a picture of myself, I almost certainly own the copyright. Greetings! Just looking for the proper way to tag the image I uploaded. I own the original document: a theatre program issued in 1988, by the now defunct American Stage Festival of Milford, NH. The ASF has been out of business since 2000. This simply serves as a historic document, showing that this play was staged in between its off-Broadway run, and its Broadway production. deleting with abandon

Well, Wikipedia Commons did warn me: The great majority of images downloaded from the Web are not properly "licenced" and therefore will be deleted, and deleted they are.

I downloaded pics of 19th century maps of India, postcards published in 1905. They were deleted in due time by a paranoid Wikipedia Commons as I didn't prove beyond a doubt that the individuals who took those pics is 1905 died "70 years or more" ago (or is it 100 years?). So I also deleted the numerous sourced edits to the French India article that were to accompany these pics.

What I have left are a few "own work" personal pics of Roatan, etc. Unsurprisingly enough, Wikipedia Commons ends up being a galactic-size "own work" scrapbook of landscapes, sceneries, travel pics and city scenes with little or no substance.--Lubiesque (talk) 21:17, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Well, no. It also contains tons of things where someone has gone to the trouble to track down sources and make sure they are legal to upload. Although I primarily do my own photography, here are some examples off the top of my head from my own uploads: the entire Category:Seattle and the Orient and Category:Representative Citizens of the City of Seattle and County of King - 1903 (public domain because published in US before 1923); the entire Category:PD Seattle Neighborhood Atlas (where I contacted the Seattle City Archivist to clarify permission; we also have several hundred, maybe a thousand, images that were made for the city government and were similarly licensed); etc. Obviously, that pre-1923 rule for the U.S. makes things simpler here, but I'd have to say, most 19th century maps should be fair game, especially if published before about 1870 and certainly if published before about 1860. What part of the century were these maps from? If they were 1890s, and not inherently anonymous, and the author's birth and death dates are unknown, then sadly the precautionary principle does say we can't use them: someone working in, say, 1895, could easily have been born in 1870 and lived into the mid-20th century. There is a chance they haven't been dead for even 50 years. Now, push those dates back 25 years and it's a different picture; ditto if we know that the original author was born before 1840, even if we don't specifically know when he/she died. - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

The Belgian artist died in 1949, which is less than 70 years ago, so the image is still copyrighted in Belgium and possibly also in the United States, depending on when it was first published. Page view statistics exist. I don't know if image-view statistics exist for commons files. What about audio-listen, because they aren't loaded separately on a page. Why have you deleted my photo?

Someone deleted a photo of my father that I published to a Wikipedia page that someone created for him. His page is here:

I own this photo and have released it into the public domain. This has *always* been a public domain photo. It was his official portrait as Dean of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. There was absolutely no justification for deleting this photo. I appear to be unable to re-upload the photo to Wikimedia Commons. I am very frustrated by this. Can you help me with this?

If it was his official portrait as Dean, I'm not sure why you think it has always been a public domain photo or why you have the right to release it into the public domain. Extreme distortion in scope?

Are images that provide totally false portrayal of the reality educational? E.g a bridge bent 180 degrees, a church turned 90 degrees from the wall or an image showing a sharp cape where the coastline bends near 180 degrees though actually it's about 50 degrees? 90.190.114.172 16:15, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

These are typical of panoramic images. They are perfectly "real"; they simply use a different perspective than the one naturally seen by the human eye. The first one is a 360° panorama, which should typically be viewed with an appropriate viewer. Saying these are "totally false" is like saying a verbal description is totally false because the word "blue" is not blue. - Jmabel ! talk 23:05, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't say they are typical. A good panorama should me more like this, which is just a wide image where angles are quite right. Ok, as for 360° I might realize that something is wrong with it and that it's a panoramic image. But as for the church example you probably wouldn't even tell that it's a panoramic image without having been there yourself.  Comment Above three panoramic images seems such type of data format automatically photographed by the fully rotated panoramic camera. Currently, Wikipedia/Wikimedia seems not enough support these formats, however, if we could see these images through the appropriate viewers such like a QuickTime VR or similar web services using Adobe Flash, it may be enough educational, very realistic landscapes.   • Your example is a rectilinear projection. That's practical up to about a 120° view. Beyond that it is not. I'm sorry, but I find it counterproductive to suggest that only one type of projection for panoramas should be permitted, especially if that effectively means that we can't have panoramas beyond roughly 120°. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Photo The Masaï 1987

A new Wikipedian added an old photo of his band File:The Masaï 1987.jpg. The photo was taken for him with his camera by his sister, so it is his photo. No one else has the photo and it hasn't been published before. Now the source is being questioned by Zelenko, see here. I think it's nonsense to ask the newbe to ask his sister to give formal permission to publish the photo. It isn't here photograph! But Zelenko is stubbornly refusing to accept the photograph - I begged him on my bare knees, but more I will not do. I think this is a bad thing for wellwilling Wikipedians - we should encourage them instead of disencourage them with kafkaesque rules; this has nothing to do with copyright. This way you're driving people away. So please help to settle this matter, without the nonsense of sisters or partners having to give formal permission - if I ask an unknown chinese person to take a picture of me, I cannot publish it without his permission?? - howabsurd can it be? I've notified User:EugeneZelenko, User:Miura and nl:Gebruiker:Miura about this discussion on their talk pages. I think the problem is that it was the uploader's sister who took the photo, so she is the copyright holder. Commons is very strict with copyright matters, which might make things a bit difficult for new users. Would it be too much trouble for the user's sister to send an e-mail to OTRS? The unknown Chinese person has the copyright of the photo on my camera??? This must be Monty Python. His sister's explicit permission would make the matter crystal clear. That said, snapping the shutter is not sufficient to be the holder of a copyright, even if the two usually go hand in hand. I've certainly never heard any of any court saying that if Person A does the settings on a camera, hands the camera to Person B to take a picture of Person A, and tells Person B essentially what angle to shoot, somehown Person B would own the copyright, not Person A. Can anyone point at even a single example of a court in any country ruling along those lines? - Jmabel ! talk 00:23, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
Can anyone post to a single court case at all about snapshots like these? They're hardly aggressively litigated. If snapping the shutter was all that was done, then of course there wouldn't be a copyright. But if you stood over there, and they had some freedom over angle and distance, then it would probably cross the minimal level of copyrightability. I do think judges would have comments about the laws and trifles and "if you haven't settled this case by the time I'm back from lunch..." Unwanted phone numbers

sometime, how for instance here: File:The National Archives UK - CO 1069-37-154.jpg are changed a part of the file name into international phone numbers permanently. A bug or wanted? Where do you see phone numbers? Some web browsers, such as Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, identify long numbers on a web page as a phone number and include a clickable link for calling that number. If this is what is happening to you, this is a feature in your web browser and not something which can be controlled by Wikimedia Commons. Updating to higher resolution?

I've loaded a picture with copyright permission given (ticket info available etc.).File:Dowdeswellreservoir.jpg. Having now been using The Commons for some time, I can see it is important to have higher resolution available. I do have a higher resolution version of the picture from the author, and would like to update that already loaded with this version. Does this mean I have to re-do the copyright permission or can I update the version to this higher resolution version? Two copies of German image file

When moving a file from Wikipedia to Commons, make sure that you include the file uploading history. Also make sure that the file on Commons is in the same format as the one on Wikipedia. In this case, you have changed a JPG file into a PNG file. Consider using Commons Helper instead to prevent errors in the transfer. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:05, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

I fixed the wheatstone bridge article. We wanted an image for it on the talk page and a German said we could use his. That is where all the confusion started. They look and function exactly the same on the outside, the Kelvin bridge just adds finer bits inside. The E-Meter image was there for a while, but not PC enough I assume. I seems images of Wheatsone bridges are rarer then the meters, we used to make them in school and tear them apart after a few days.--Canoe1967 (talk) 09:15, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Picture for upload

I have found a picture of the subjects of my draft (awaiting comments) Wiki Page on [Huw & Tony Williams] I am being assisted in this work by Huw Williams. The photo is by a chap called Lee Robson (Musings of a Libertine on Tumblr) and I have found, through Google, a photo on Lee's Tumblr pages (i.e. in the public domain) that was the *basis* of the cover of Huw & Tony's Live CD.

As the subject of the photo, does Huw not have some say in whether the image can be used? So if I get lee's permission to use the photo, can it remain in the Infobox on my submitted-for-review page? (I note that it was there yesterday but appears to have been removed earlier today?) You need the copyright holders permission to a free license. See Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain or en:free content. A work is not public domain just because you can see it through google. You can not reuse a work or claim that the copyright holder agreed to free redistribution for money making purposes (you added {{Attribution}} to the file page) just because you found something with google.
The subject of the photo has no rights to use the photo or to allow others to use it. Maybe the subject can restrict the use of the photo under en:personality rights. But thats not the problem here, we only talk about copyrights. --Martin H. (talk) 17:02, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

License status (whether it has a valid license), not license stats (statistics pertaining to the license).
The problem is that there is no reason to think that you held the license to release it. You say that the source is a particular website, which does not say that the image is free to reuse. If you can get permission from the copyright holder of the image -- that would typically be the photographer, not the subject of the image -- please see COM:OTRS for how to pass that permission along. Otherwise, sorry, images that do not have a license allowing free reuse (including commercial reuse and editing) are outside of Commons scope. - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Soweit alles richtig gemacht. Problem ist nur, dass der Rechteinhaber das Bild unter keiner freien Lizenz veröffentlicht hat. Der Rechteinhaber gestattet dir also, das Bild zu betrachten, nicht aber es zu kopieren, zu modifizieren oder für irgendwelche Zwecke zu nutzen, besonders nicht für kommerzielle Zwecke. Das Bild ist unfrei. Wikimedia Projekte sind Projekte für freie Inhalte, siehe Commons:Projektrahmen#Muss frei lizenziert oder gemeinfrei sein. Unfreie Dateien darfst du nicht hochladen. --Martin H.
