Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Wiki_Facebook_Post.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Update of HIV/AIDS[edit]

Recently did a major update of HIV/AIDS. Wondering if you could update the spoken version? James Heilman, MD (talk) 00:40, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I liked that we did it with multiple voices last time, so I'll see if we can organize recruits. Maximilianklein (talk) 02:53, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great. We have nearly finished the GA. So doing it once it closes would be excellent. James Heilman, MD (talk) 22:48, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK I'll watch for it once the GA closes. Maximilianklein (talk) 16:30, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Wikipedian in Residence term length graph[edit]

Hi,

Do you still have the raw file for File:Wikipedian in Residence term length graph.png? It irks me that my 2011 ARKive residency is missing. Andy Mabbett (talk) 23:35, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Pigsonthewing:  :( I don't have it any more. It was on an old work computer. I got all the data from this page outreach:Wikipedian_in_Residence though. Sorry, didn't mean to exclude you, I was jus viz-ing data at the time. (And it was before I was doing it programmatically and backing up to github). OK, thanks anyway. Andy Mabbett (talk) 22:53, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Recitation-bot is creating unhelpful categories and deleting useful ones.[edit]

Hello! I'd like to bring to your attention a feature I've noticed about Recitation-bot that seems to be hindering proper categorization: first, it is creating vague categories, some of which are being discussed for deletion (see Commons:Categories for discussion/2014/09/Category:New species and Commons:Categories for discussion/2014/09/Category:New genus, and second, it has systematically reverted my attempts to correctly categorize images as to their respective taxonomic genus (see for example here and here- isolated images of organisms should not be categorized as an Identification key, even though they may be components of one). A bot may be more efficient than a human, but it can still do dumb things :) Please address the issue so that the bot does not revert human changes. Cheers! Animalparty (talk) 04:52, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Animalparty and Daniel Mietchen: I see exactly what you mean about overwritting categorization, I didn't think about that in my coding of the bot. Thanks for alerting me. I'll fix it. Maximilianklein (talk) 21:48, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

A comment regarding User:Recitation-bot[edit]

Hello! I have a suggestion for imporoving the contributions of User:Recitation-bot. It seems to upload lower resolution images hosted on secondary sites (such as PubMed), ignoring higher quality resolution on the original journal site. As a recent example, the file File:A-New-Species-of-Euphlyctis-(Anura-Dicroglossidae)-from-Barisal-Bangladesh-pone.0116666.g003.jpg, (161 KB) from a PLOS journal, was taken from this version hosted on PubMed, while the original PLOS article has the 9.6 MB original file!. This can create clutter and redundancy when the original resolution photos are uploaded, or impede users from finding and utilizing high quality versions. Please consider investigating to see if the automated uploads can be made more efficient. Cheers, Animalparty (talk) 22:02, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Animalparty: . Thanks for pointing out this issue. It is actually something @Daniel Mietchen: and I have been aware of for some time. We have written to the PubMed about an API option for the higher resolution images, although the response was that it is not supported right now. However Daniel is having new contact with PubMed and they say that it should be on the way, its just to do with legacy workflows on their end. So eventually this will be possible they've said. Thanks for writing. Maximilianklein (talk) 18:30, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks for looking into it! Animalparty (talk) 20:12, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked Recitation-bot[edit]

I have blocked your bot. It has created about 45 pages such as

Prophylactic-versus-Therapeutic-Fingolimod-Restoration-of-Presynaptic-Defects-in-Mice-Suffering-pone.0170825.g007.jpg

that apparently should be files, but do not have the "File" prefix, so end up as galleries without the image. I have nuked all of the invalid pages.

.     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 12:06, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

More generally, I do not see Recitation-bot listed at Commons:Bots/Archive, so it appears that you do not have permission to run the bot on Commons. I suggest you request and receive permission before asking for the bot to be unblocked. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 12:20, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Jim. We are looking into this, and you can follow the progress here. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 17:43, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all, I was not operating the bot during this time, but I'll talk to User:Dfko, to figure out what's going on. Maximilianklein (talk) 16:38, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
