Hi there, I disagree on this. The source link points to a "401 not found", to me it is not a good source info. We have the name of the newspaper, I'd like at least a date of publication, if we can't have more... What do you think? --Eusebius (talk) 09:32, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bah, I couldn't find a better source. I found several references of this picture, but all of them come from Commons. I have read in books that Harper's Weekly covered this strike in 1894; I don't know for sure that the illustration was in it (it's not the same look as the others I could find), but I'll just trust the uploader and remove the problem tag. Sorry! --Eusebius (talk) 13:05, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Admin Shizhao,

 • This image should not have been subjected to a new flickr review because it is a Flickr Lickr image. Flickr Lickr images were licensed freely when first placed on Commons They are non-revocable. Flickr Lickr only accepted images that were licensed freely. So, this image was licensed as "cc by 2.0" in April 2007 when first uploaded to Commons. Please also see this comment from Admin Lupo: [2] and this edit by him. I have made the changes to this Angkor image. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:57, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another speedy stamp

[edit]

I noticed you deleted File:1970-Ag8DiadelaArmada-GoletaJuliet1814.jpg as a speedy per my nomination. You might also want to review this stamp File:Martín Garcia-Estampilla.jpg nominated at the same time for the same reason. TIA Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 15:18, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good evening. Regarding the file File:1970-Ag8DiadelaArmada-GoletaJuliet1814.jpg: Even if it strives for a stamp is for public use, the stamp is verified to be 1970 and first published in Argentina for over 25 years (Law 11723) public domain. The picture is around 1950 and its author died in 1977. Why should be eliminated?
As File:Martín Garcia-Estampilla.jpg the author of the painting is the same as the reproduction should not give problems.
Sorry for my bad English. Greetings, Quijav (talk) 17:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, the talk page File talk:Martín Garcia-Estampilla.jpg for the deleted file still exists. Thanks
10 days later and this talk page still exists, can you possible delete it like you did with the main file. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 18:03, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Behemoth2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Bogus no source notice

What is the meaning of this? The page clearly states the source of the image. It states that the image was taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and sent to me in an email by Mike Brown, the discoverer of the planet. Mike Brown is an easy person to contact if you need to verify this. He maintains a blog and his email address is publicly listed on the web. Hello, Shizhao!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

LJDickinson.jpg

[edit]

Hi, you deleted File:LJDickinson.jpg for what looks like a very valid reason (lack of real source); however I looked further on behalf of an undeletion request and found the actual source on the Library of Congress; the image was taken (apparently as part of photographing all new Congressmen) in 1921/2 and is therefore PD-US, and furthermore the original negative was later donated to the Library of Congress anyways so it is PD on both counts. If you agree, could you look at Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#LJ_Dickinson_photo_came_from_the_USGovernment and undelete it? Deleted images

[edit]

Hello Shizhao, could you please make use of the Commons Delinker, when you think it's necessary to delete images? It's quite ugly to find red links in many of my articles. And could you please, as well, restore File:NC-Congress-MarionButler.jpg? This is a picture with "No known restrictions on publication" as you can see here in the Library of Congress entry. I would put the license into the file afterwards. Thank you, --Scooter (talk) 12:41, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for restoring. As I was told meanwhile, the Commons Delinker should work automatically, what it obviously did not in the case of the pictures you deleted. This leads to ugly red links in the articles, but this is of course not your fault. I put the license into the file description. Could you be so kind and restore File:Frank Bartlett Willis.jpg as well? There is also a proper license to be found in the Library of Congress. Greetings, --Scooter (talk) 15:24, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Shizhao, you did restore the image, but it cannot be displayed yet. It doesn't show up in the galleries, although I was able to add the license. Could you please take a look on that? --Scooter (talk) 21:59, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You transfered a couple of images, but you can't leave them like this. Please correct them. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 19:19, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have uploaded a lot of images from zh wikipedia. In the process the source info (for example author) got lost. Without the source info these files will get nominated for deletion sooner or later. To get Commonshelper to function properly you should first replace Information at zh wikipedia with the English version. This way Commonshelper will function properly and you'll end up with good transfers to here. Multichill (talk) 23:03, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I got a message from you regarding this photo, saying "This image is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license". I wonder what the matter with this photo is. I took the photo and posted it with the usual CFDL/CC license, along with dozens of other pictures from Guangzhou, posted in exactly the same way. File history would show that. Whom else would I need to ask permission from?

Is this just a bot error of some kind, or is there a real issue with something like "derivative work" and the implication is that for this image to exist on Commons one needs the agreement of however owns copyright in the various items of the shopping center's "decor" seen in the image - such as the direction signs, various "welcome to our mall" signs, and perhaps even the fire alarm sign? In my humble view, those seem to be fairly utilitarian signs, and not exactly works of art - otherwise, noone could ever post a picture of the insides of a shopping mall or a train stations, because they are always full of signs etc... You tagged this file as "no permission", but this image was transferred from en.wiki with the same name, so any en.wiki admin can prove that en:User:Otherjoke uploaded it and tagged it as public domain. Do you really need special permission for that image or it will be enough to tag image with some kind of template telling smth like "moved from en.wiki, was there"? --217.118.66.68 20:52, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Waldrapp

[edit]

My picture File:Graz Schlossberg Waldrapp Infotafel.jpg (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Graz_Schlossberg_Waldrapp_Infotafel.jpg)

has been marked for deletion, because of "missing permissions".

In fact, a permission for this picture is NOT necessary. It has been taken in Austria and shows an object, which is permanently installed in an public space. Because of the Austrian law it is allowed to fotograph this object without any permission, and also it is allowed to publish pictures of the object without permission (this is called "Panoramafreiheit", freedom of panorama, see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoramafreiheit#.C3.96sterreich, in German).

Therefore the picture does not need any permission and there is no reason to delete the picture.

Could you please remove the dummy-header when adding something to the CommonsDelinker-commands (before saving). And there is something called "Copy & Paste", you really don't need to make an own edit for each of the replacement-commands. The edit-window is large enough to copy several statements in one edit before saving. The CommonsDelinker will be very much grateful to you if it does not need to start several times and gets them all in one. Also the other users will be glad if the CommonsDelinker will not stop working. -- Cecil (talk) 13:35, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps in future you could actually bother to read the information the bot moves, or suggest to the bot's creators that it doesn't move images that are likely to be contested?

Warning about image replacement

[edit]

Hi Shizhao. I noticed your recent universal replacement of File:George-Washington.jpg by File:Gilbert Stuart Williamstown Portrait of George Washington.jpg. Although I agree with the spirit of this replacement, I wanted to note a couple things:

 • The original file being replaced is a cropped detail of the full portrait. These are more appropriate for small images, such as in tables and lists. It's not a good idea to replace a cropped detail with a full image - instead, upload a cropped detail from the full image and replace it with that instead.
 • Additionally, you described it as an "exact or scaled-down duplicate" - this could be misleading in this case, as not only is it a different crop, but it's also significantly different in sharpness, color, and so on. You can delete it as an inferior copy, but generally we avoid doing that for paintings because it might actually be a photo of a different copy of the painting by a different artist.

Thanks for understanding. :-) Dcoetzee (talk) 02:20, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By Portuguese law, any dissolved or defunct magazine and newspaper, enters in public domain. So this is the correct license for the file and there are no reason to delete him.

Nature007 post

[edit]

Dear 'Shizhao', I have just recently received a notification that you reported my pictures of the logo of the Brazilian political parties: File:Prpparrepprop.jpg AND File:Partsoccrist.jpg. Firstly I would like to affirm that these pictures were snapshots taken by me on the internet band then fixed with paint and Photoshop CS3, making me not having broken anything in basis with copyright terms. Secondly I would like to explain to you the reason I did all this work. The concrete reason I did this is therefore the children or human being who go on Wikipedia would not be blinded by not seeing the political party logo. If people go on Wikipedia they will like to see or read a little bit more on the party they're looking at and wouldn't you like to know you helped humankind?

In conclusion, if you understand the sentimental value I have towards my work for Wikipedia and all the people that use it, please, in all that is valuable, remove the copyright.

Sincerely,

Your Friend,

The case of the File:O_Mosquito_5S_N10.jpg

[edit]

The Portugal law says that a dissolved magazine and newspaper, enters in public domain after 3 years it's dissolution and in case of defunct is one year. But I have made a mistake and please I am sorry for that. I didn't read completely the law, the article 173 of the authors protections, says that the author retains the author rights. resuming, the name and the structure of the magazine is public domain but the cover, if contains protected material, isn't. and is this the case, for that again I'm sorry for my behavior.

Commented on the discussion page. Melancolicsphere (talk) 13:40, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shizhao, I like your tool and the use of TinEye, I also use TinEye for a long time already and it saves me much time in finding possible copyright violations. There is one danger: It is possible, that other reuse content from Wikipedia. In this case Im unsure, if the first uploader is realy the author, but the TinEye is not the correct proof, that he is not. Saving images from Commons the wrong way results in imagenames like 800px-Filename.jpg. This is a case here, the image is taken from Wikipedia according to the filename, a 200px thumbnail from an article was saved and reused - moreover the site is not available but according to the pagename it seems to be a mirror of Wikipedia. Please pay more attention to this circular references. --Martin H. (talk) 13:41, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A suggestion would be to exclude two kind of images from TinEye check: Images reuploaded 1 month after first upload and images uploaded with It is a derivative work of a file from Commons through Commons:Upload (derivativeFX). Is this possible or what do you think? --Martin H. (talk) 13:54, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CPLP

[edit]

How could you delete that file without discussing it first? The symbol was not exactly the same logo and, moreover, CPLP asked me to use that animation in their site. There were three users against it, and you simply vanished with the animation. What a wrong attitude for an administrator! --Tonyjeff (talk) 18:16, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, same thing happened to the Rockstar London logo. I think the discussion page should just be deleted, since no administrator around here uses before going ahead and deleting the files. It's a completely arbitrary thing. Melancolicsphere (talk) 19:48, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I downloaded the original picture from commons, then I improved its quality and loaded back as a new version. I grant all permissions and keep the licenses of the orginal file. Hi! Jastrow and I are working on autotranslating Meta information museum, the meta-template we use for many museums, like . Could you please help us find Chinese translations for every tag name:

 * artist/maker
 * description
 * dimensions
 * credit line
 * accession number
 * location
 * source/photographer
 * references
 * other versions

"Credit line" is mainly about the mode of acquisition: what collection does it come from? Did it join the collections by gift, purchase, on loan, etc.?

You changed this at Commons to PD-cn but without giving any indication when these two images were published. Do you know anything about an early publication, i.e. within the 50ies, of these images such that PD-cn indeed applies? The arrest warrant on the right hand side is surely PD-ineligible but the photograph? How is "Released under the GNU Free Documentation License." in the permission field to be understood? Dear Shizhao, we seem to have a small mess here. According to Special:Undelete/File:Sergio.jpg, you tagged and deleted this file. We have an OTRS e-mail stating that this was a photo done by the uploader's wife and edited by the uploader. The image was in use on his Wikipedia page. I believe it's enough we have an e-mail from the uploader stating the origin of the work. However, now someone uploaded a different image on top of this one. What do you suggest doing? We could move the present one to a new name and undelete the old one to the same name, perhaps? Patrícia msg 21:11, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove my uploaded image?????????????????

[edit]

Why the hell did you do that???? If you don't know the catogery its an belgian castle and i want you to upload it again as soon as you can!

Don't go deleting people's uploaded images after their back while not even letting them know stupid fuck why did you do delete that you had no problem with my image!?

What are you guys doing??

[edit]

I uploaded a perfectly legitimate image scanned from my 1880 personal copy of a book, Pope's History of India, to the English Wikipedia. The image was titled: File:Pope1880Sind2.jpg. The file had the complete uploading information, as do the other files from the same book I uploaded the same day 6 March 2009. (for example, File:Pope1880Oudh2.jpg. Some Wikipedian, in their infinite wisdom, decided to move the file to Wikicommons but forgot to add the uploading information, and then apparently, you, in your even more infinite wisdom decided to delete both image files (i.e. tossed out the baby with the bathwater). Do you think I have infinite time at my disposal to match your infinite wisdom and can infinitely keep uploading this image?? Are you perhaps being too busy a beaver for your own good (and without a doubt everybody else's)? Fowler&fowler (talk) 18:32, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you deleted this file. The deletion log says: "In category Unknown as of 10 June 2009; no license)". But after the warning was received, I added the license, but I left the template in the page because I didn't have the right to remove it.

Could I ask why the file was deleted? If was a problem with the license I would be glad to fix it.

It puzzles me as well. Shizhao, do you actually check the images or do you just tag everything without even glancing at them? Stuff like this completely confuses me; couldn't you just have checked the edit history and reverted the removal made on the 11th? I'm starting to suspect that you're running an unauthorized bot on your own user account. GraYoshi2x►talk 22:15, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The group of edits made on 12:54, 26 August 2009 raises my suspicions as well; it's extremely unlikely that anyone could remove all those tags and use the same edit summary all under a minute, not to mention the '(s)' attached to the end. Surely a human could distinguish between one or more tags? GraYoshi2x►talk 22:20, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate deletions and when not to execure them

[edit]

Hi Shizhao, you deleted File:Herr Seemann in jungen Jahren.TIF as a duplicate of File:Herr Seemann in jungen Jahren.JPG. Please do not delete TIF files as duplicates of JPG files. JPG has a lossy compression algorithm, meaning the quality of a TIF which is converted to JPG is always inferior to the quality of the original TIF. Please do not delete files as duplicates when they are not the same file type. Thanks and regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 15:01, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for Image:Mobile phone.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mobile phone.png. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. File:Taipei City flag.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Can we use some common sense on this

[edit]

I doubt you tagged the image originally, and unfortunately you probably didn't read the discussion on it at the duplicate at File:Oregon State Capitol 1.jpg, but the duplicate issue here has been handled very backwards. I, the image author, uploaded the image to en Wikipedia, then someone in France uploaded a copy to Commons, but all Frenchy. Fine. But then someone uploaded another copy, and did it right with licensing (and spelling). So then there were two. One version with an English name for something located in an English speaking country, an English description, a proper license, the proper date, and it included the metadata from the camera. The other is the French version, which had all these problems (I've now fixed most). So which one did we decide to delete? Common sense would say we should delete the French version, but that's not what is going to happen now that the delinker bot has been run. Can we maybe see about fixing this so it passes common sense? Aboutmovies (talk) 20:25, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:ChangchuanLiberated.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi Shizhao, will the TinEye check come back sometime? My proposal: The problem was, that the bot also found e.g. maps derivative of Commons or images from transwiki or pd-old images. You should restrict the bot on images with Own (or the equivalent wordings own work, Trabalho próprio, Eigene Arbeit, etc.) or with author=Example only. For the moment this may help to sort out the images with wrong authors, the major problem on Commons, or images published elsewhere lacking evidence of permission. Also maps created as derivative works of other maps with wrong source information (own work only) will be marked. --Martin H. (talk) 08:02, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty sure that had a licence. Also pretty sure common sense would dictate you check with the author. Please fix your mistake. Noodle snacks (talk) 01:04, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assigning Catagories

[edit]

I uploaded two pictures recently: FP_Carpenters.jpg and FP_conducting.jpg

I have tried using your supposedly user friendly system "CommonSense" for identifying categories and it's suggestions were:

man woman Cultures of Denmark

WTF?

The pictures are of Frank Pooler and Richard and Karen Carpenter. How the heck did it come up with Cultures of Denmark? Your system is not user friendly nor is it intuitive to the uninformed.

I could never find any appropriate categories, and got so frustrated that I just put the following:

Frank Pooler The Carpenters

Hey, I noticed you deleting duplicates. I appreciate your work, but please make sure that you replace the images first before deleting them. Hello Shizhao. I´ve got two images deleted between today and yesterday, fact that I don´t understand because I asked the author of the photographs to send the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and I know with certainty he did because he sent a copy of thay e-mail to me. I´m kinda "angry" because it was not easy for me to contact the author, indeed he asked me why did I put his name in the first place instead of telling the pictures were mine in order to avoid all these procedures.

Files were http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Lacri_12.jpg http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Lingerbliss_myt.jpg

Hi there

User:Monkap my girlfriend transferred this file to Commons, with as she and I thought the appropriate information, and it is now marked as not being sourced. I imagine this is because she already marked it – as we usually do – as NowCommons (Hungarian: azonnali-commons) in the Wikipedia and it already got deleted. We can get it retrieved, I guess, but it is a legitimate use and is simply a case I think of it being deleted before you could verify so. Deleting it from Commons, then, would seem to make the problem worse as then there is no source in either place.

If you could advise when in the upload process (which is somewhat tedious anyway) we are expected to mark as Azonnali-commons (NowCommons), e.g. once it has been verified (and how would we know that?), then we will follow that process better in future.

Best wishes

Image deletion despite OTRS permission

Hi, I've seen that the files File:Jean-Pierre Papin.jpg and File:Alexander Vencel.jpg have been deleted today. A written permission has however been sent to OTRS on approximately Dec. 11, 2009.
