Help needed with 1900-images: Test-image
Hello! I have now uploaded a test-image which serves as a template for the remaining ca. 1900 images I am also going to upload via OpenRefine. Could someone please have a look at the page of this test image and tell me, if I made any significant error, so that I can adjust the template (the data is created using a Python-script) for the remaining images? Thank you in advance! CalRis25 (talk) 18:02, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
- Does the image actually illustrate "abacus" or might it refer to another article on the same page? In the later case, I wouldn't include it in the filename. (I read the explanation on the file description page ("Alveus is the lemma or headword of the article, in which the image appears").
∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 18:40, 1 September 2024 (UTC)- Yes, the image does illustrate the word and article "abacus" The section Structure of the file name contains only an example for a file name. This section is the same for all 1900 images. I just changed the page to make it clear that the file name is merely an example. Is there anything else? CalRis25 (talk) 08:45, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ok. It sometimes happens that similar works include an image on the same page, but not necessarily directly within the entry. Also I thought the section "Structure of the file name" was just for the test. If not, I'd add it in the information template with " | Other fields = ", probably as a template.
- I hoped someone might suggest you a different way to fill "description=", "source=" and "creator=", but I didn't comment on that aspect.

- I fixed the license. Yann (talk) 09:21, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks to both of you, Enhancing999 and Yann! I changed the template accordingly (note: I could not apply the license-fix to the structured data because PD-old-100-expired could not be reconciled with Wikidata). Otherwise, the output looks a lot nicer now due to the incorporation of the file name structure in the Information-Box. See test-image 6. If there are no further suggestions until tomorrow, I am going to start with the batch upload (first small chunks, later larger ones). CalRis25 (talk) 17:46, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- @CalRis25: can you explain what you mean by "PD-old-100-expired could not be reconciled with Wikidata"? Copyright status for Lot and His Daughters (Q3837479) would appear to be exactly equivalent to that. - Jmabel ! talk 21:45, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Quite simple. If I put {{PD-old-100-expired}} into a CSV-column of the OpenRefine-input file and reconcile this column with Wikidata, then I get the result "Create the new item." If, however, this column contains {{PD-old-100}}, then I get the reconciliation-result 100 years or more after author(s) death (Q29940705). — Preceding unsigned comment added by CalRis25 (talk • contribs) 07:29, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Does anyone know how to address this in Wikidata and/or OpenRefine?
- Failing that, can OpenRefine handle multiple permission tags? If your cannot use {{PD-old-100-expired}} can you use {{PD-old-100}} plus {{PD-US-expired}}? - Jmabel ! talk 12:50, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Jmabel! I am moving this specific discussion to this Village_pump/Copyright-thread, as that seems to be the appropriate place to discuss this. Thank you for your support. CalRis25 (talk) 11:35, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

- At Abacus 4.1, I did a sample alternative formatting. The idea is to start with the description of the image "Abacus" and making that easily editable by other users. The remaining of the description being more static, it's in "other fields 1". Possibly "Type of object image is based on:" could be copied into the description as well. "Place of discovery" and "Place in 1849" maybe too, but they are empty in this sample.
∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 22:21, 2 September 2024 (UTC)- Your edit of the formatting makes sense, because it better distinguishes the bits that are likely to be edited by users and those which will stay the same. I moved the Type- and Place-bits into the description, however, because that makes the information box easier to (mentally) digest. I also reordered it a bit. Thank you for your help. Abacus 4.1 looks better now and makes more sense. CalRis25 (talk) 13:52, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- I'd avoid bold, field like parts in the description text entirely. How about Special:Diff/919327534: If the text for SAMPLE1 and SAMPLE2 is empty, these parts of description= would be skipped. They'd still be present in other_fields_1 below.
∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 14:05, 4 September 2024 (UTC)- I disagree. Comparing my previous version with your change, I think that the first one is better: Reasons: a) most image-specific stuff (i.e. different from image to image) is close together, b) all items reasonably expected to be changed are within the same box, c) items like type and place without attached information clearly indicate that this information is missing and should be added, and d) SAMPLE1 and SAMPLE2 not necessarily are nouns which can be simply replaced. Your template is more machine-compatible, I guess, by isolating each item of information, but at the price of making the information more difficult to be digested by us lowly humans. I believe, that a more anthropocentric approach is better in this case. I will revert to my previous edit, but thank you for your effort. CalRis25 (talk) 14:49, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Enhancing999! I'm referring to your latest edit of the file Abacus 4.1. From this new alternative formatting of the template and the first and second alternative formattings before that, I take that keeping the information about type and place in separate fields (other fields) and keeping the description simple is a big issue. If that is so, I think that version 1 of these alternative formattings (with a bit of reshuffling of the order) is preferable. If I understood your edits correctly, please say so. I will then change the template accordingly before beginning the actual batch-upload. CalRis25 (talk) 22:32, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- @CalRis25: I suggest you put the text of the "Structure of the file name" section into a template; or better still, put it on the parent category page and use a short template message on each file page to refer people there. You could probably also template the {{para|source}] data. Finally, apply a category like "1849 woodcuts". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:40, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hello! Someone already changed the "Structure"-section into a template (thanks to whoever did it). I added the category 1849 illustrations instead of 1849 woodcuts, because I am not entirely sure about the exact type of reproduction used. I will leave the source-data in the Information-box itself without using a template. I am happy enough with how it looks now, and I do not think that any changes to the source section will be necessary. Plus, it now includes the respective lemma with a link to the page in the Archive.org-edition. In the worst case scenario, a batch-edit using OpenRefine should do the trick. Posted a request for temporary undeletion, suspect I've formatted it incorrectly.
Hi. I have posted a request for the temporary undeletion of a file that was deleted a few months ago. The file was in use at Wikikids, a Dutch language site based on the Vikidia project.
The problem is that it's not been seen or commented on, while others are getting attended quickly, and it made me wonder if I have muddled a request for undeletion, with a request for temporary undeletion, and formatted the request incorrectly.
Could someone please have a look at this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#File:Male_anatomy_nl.png: and tell me if I've made any errors, or if I simply have to just sit and wait for someone to pick it up and attend to it please?
Thank you. DaneGeld (talk) 20:24, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- I've temporarily undeleted the file so it can be transferred to Wikikids as a fair use file. I did see your UDR before, temporary undeletion tends to be very time sensitive. Abzeronow (talk) 20:43, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Can you upload photos of football NEW cards
I have been in hot water lately for photos that I did not realize were copyrighted. So I was wondering if I took photos of football cards would that still be a copyright violation even though I took the photo of the card, yes I know this is a dumb and stupid question, but I just want to know. WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 15:28, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- You should assume that any piece of media is copyrighted until you know otherwise. The most common exceptions to this in the United States are works that are very old (usually about a century) or that were made by the federal government. There are obviously other exceptions, but those are the biggest. Sometimes when someone owns the copyright to a work, he will license it in a way that allows it to be shared. If the copyright owner does this, it will always be very clear, because that person will explicitly tell you, usually with some kind of Creative Commons notice. See COMM:LICENSE for acceptable licenses. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:22, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Probably not. Unless something is explicitly free licensed (see COM:Licence) or out of copyright for a demonstrable explicit reason, generally assume it is copyrighted and cannot be uploaded to Commons (unless the copyright holder gives specific permission to share it under a free license). -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:17, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- @WhyIsThisSoHard575483838: I strongly recommend that if you are interested in uploading images that are not entirely your own original work you should make a point of becoming at least passingly familiar with the copyright laws of the country you live in. - Jmabel ! talk 17:59, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Signature and photo of K. V. Frolov
Hi,
I'm wanting to upload the signature and a photo of a scientist called K. V. Frolov, who was from Russia, as I'm trying to write an article about him. I just wanted to verify that these would not break copyright. I looked through the copyright by territory for signatures and it looked like it was fine, it had been uploaded on the Russian commons before stating it was "his image is not protected by copyright.." (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:%D0%90%D0%B2%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%84_%D0%9A._%D0%92._%D0%A4%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0.jpg). The one I'm not sure about is a photo of him, which states "This is a non-free photo of a deceased person. A new photograph cannot be taken, which may justify fair use of the photograph to illustrate an article about this person in the absence of alternative photographs under a free licence and the absence of reasonable grounds to believe that there are alternative photographs in the public domain." (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:FrolovKV.jpg).
Thanks, Apollo468 (talk) 20:52, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Apollo468: The signature should be no problem. Generally, signatures cannot be copyrighted, except in some East Asian countries where signatures sometimes involve very sophisticated calligraphy.
- The photo, no, at least not on Commons. Commons never accepts files on a "fair use" basis.
- Each different-language Wikipedia has their own policy about non-free content uploaded locally to that Wikipedia. Some policies are as complete a negative as Commons; others make some allowances. meta:Non-free content links you to the relevant policy for each Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- (I have no idea what you mean by "the Russian commons", so I more or less ignored that. Your link is to the Russian Wikipedia.) - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
Help with finding out which liscence I need.
Hello, I am trying to upload a promotional image for a television series but can't find the correct correct liscence to fill out the details in order to upload it even though it falls under fair use. What should I do? Need help! 1zdoqnrh5 (talk) 19:15, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @1zdoqnrh5: Commons does not accept images on a "fair use" basis. We accept only images that are either in the public domain or have a license free enough to allow commercial use and derivative works. It is unlikely that either of these will be the case for a promotional image for any television show. There might be a handful of exceptions, but almost none of them will be for anything in the last 35 years or so. - Jmabel ! talk 21:18, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Also, even if not relevant to Commons: there is literally no such thing as an image being "fair use" in its own right. "Fair use" always refers to a particular use being allowed without needing to license the image: e.g. that in reviewing a record, you can show a low-res version of the album jacket, or that in writing about a piece of art you can use a low-resolution image of the art. - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. I uploaded an image. Can you tell me if I got the license right? It's a promotional photo for a television character. If not, what license would it fall under? Thank you in advance. 1zdoqnrh5 (talk) 21:53, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @1zdoqnrh5: License is incorrect since fandom is not the copyright holder. We'd need VRT permission from the photographer or from the production company. You might be able to upload it to English Wikipedia as a non-free photo if it's going to be used in an article about Dexter Morgan, the character. Abzeronow (talk) 22:10, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info. I am trying to get hold of the photographer by email, awaiting a response. How would I go about uploading it as a non-free photo to the English Wikipedia? 1zdoqnrh5 (talk) 22:22, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @1zdoqnrh5: I'm not at all sure this would qualify for non-free use on en-wiki. It is rare that photographs of living people are accepted on that basis, but maybe if it is about the character they would accept it, because it is probably very hard to get a free-licensed photo of the actor in character. The policies are a bit complicated; you might want to read en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, but at least have a look at en:Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide. You can go ahead and try, but please don't be offended if the verdict there is also to delete.
- Technically, uploading a non-free image to en-wiki is pretty easy. You upload from en:Special:Upload; you use en:Template:Non-free use rationale in lieu of {{Information}}. - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

- The en-WP rule for a non-free pic in an article about a fictional character is basically "ONE is allowed if there is no "free-use", the lead-image." So if your alt is to be used as non-free, the other one will have to disappear. If this is a good exchange is up for debate. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:38, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Uploading Pictures Given By Subject
Hello! I am currently the creator of the Darnell Edge Wiki page. I recently had images I used taken down by administration, even though I cited the sources I received them from. Now, I have received new images to use from Darnell himself to use, as these are his own pictures from his Instagram. Can I use these, as I do have permission, and how would I go about uploading and providing proof? InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 20:25, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @InfinitiBowie97: Who took the photos? Copyright normally belongs to the photographer, not the subject. Unless they are selfies, or the copyright has been legally transferred (which not all countries allow during the photographer's lifetime) the subject would not own the copyright.
- Usually the easiest way to do this is for the copyright-holder to post these to a web domain or public-facing social media page (Facebook, Flickr, X/Twitter) that is clearly under their control, with an indication of the particular license they offer. Then anyone can cite the relevant URL as the source, and upload here with that license.
- If for some reason that won't work for them, they can instead send confidential correspondence as described at COM:VRT, indicating that they own the copyright (usually because they took the photo) and that they are offering a license. (It's a little complicated, but if you read that page you will presumably understand.)
- But in any case: there is literally no substitute for the copyright-holder being the one who owns the license. Otherwise, it would be like me selling you the Brooklyn Bridge. - Jmabel ! talk 21:29, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! I see, thank you for clarifying! So just to clarify, I cannot use any images from a public article (news for instance) and just cite the source, I have to get actual permission from the reporter or find where their licensing info is on that article's webpage, and link that? InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 22:12, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @InfinitiBowie97: Close. Typically the photographer, not the reporter. And it is very unlikely that any content (photos or otherwise) from commercial media will be free-licensed. They don't make their money by giving away their rights.
- If any of the pictures Darnell Edge provided you are taken by someone he is in touch with, by far your best bet is to have him put you in touch with the photographer and do one of the two things I advised in my previous response. - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Okay great! So if the creator of the photo decides to sign off on permission, they just have to send an email to permissions-commonswikimedia.org to confirm usage? InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 00:19, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- @InfinitiBowie97: We need a permission for a free license, not just usage. Usually, that means {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} or {{Cc-by-4.0}}. Yann (talk) 07:41, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the insight. I noticed on another Wiki page for rapper 50 cent that some of the images used are screenshots from YouTube clips, as I see that YouTube enables all content to be shared and distributed publicly for commercial use. 'YouTube allows users to mark their videos with a Creative Commons CC BY'. I just want to double check that this is still the case and allowed on Wiki? I have already reached out for permissions to the owners of Darnell Edge's photos, and directed them to contact the COM VRT email address, but thinking of other options in case those permissions don't come through. Thanks in advance! InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 23:29, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- @InfinitiBowie97 "YouTube allows users to mark their videos with a Creative Commons CC BY." This is correct, but almost none of them do. If a specific video is marked like that, well, then it will be marked like that. This [2] is an example (and was used for images in several en-WP articles), you can see it in the (expanded) info under the video. It's possible to filter YT-searches for "Creative Commons". You might find something interesting at Wikipedia:A picture of you. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:06, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the insight! One more question: if I take a picture of Darnell myself, I can upload to Commons under own work, correct? If so, which Creative License would be the appropriate to upload under, and what proof would need to be required when uploading? I read through the Creative License choices and looked at other pages (i.e. Jalen Brunson Wiki page) but would like to confirm before uploading my own photos of him. I really appreciate your help as I work to finalize Darnell's page once and for all! InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 16:20, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- @InfinitiBowie97 Correct! The Upload Wizard will suggest CC BY-SA 4.0, but you can pick and chose among the acceptable licenses if you prefer. On proof, the Commons people will take your word for it, until one of them sees a reason not to. That day, that sorrow. Reason not to would for example be finding the same pic published earlier somewhere else. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:37, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, taking a picture of him yourself and uploading it would be an excellent solution. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

Dear Wikipedia Editors

- Hi Dr.BRHJ. Please don't post in all capital letters because it's considered to be equivalent to "shouting" on the Internet. In addition, it's great that you've donated to Wikipedia, but it doesn't matter when it comes to uploading content to Commons or editing on Wikipedia. If you'd like to upload a particular photo of en:Webb Miller (journalist) to use in the Wikipedia article about him, you may; however, you should first carefully read through c:Commons:Licensing and en:Wikipedia:Image use policy before doing so. Wikipedia and Commons are sister projects but they have their own policies and guidelines when it comes to uploading photos; so, it's important to understand what type of content each allows before uploading anything. The main difference is that Commons only accepts content that is either within the public domain or has been released under an acceptable free license in both the United States and the country of first publication; Wikipedia not only accepts such content, but it also accepts en:Wikipedia:non-free content (i.e. still copyrighted content not released under an acceptable free license). Since it's hard to say which will work best in this case without knowing which image you'd like to upload, someone can probably give you a more detailed reply is you can provide a link to the actual photo of Miller that you think should be used. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:42, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
Upload photo from a site under CC BY SA 4.0
I was searching for a free image of a politician to use on article regarding them on enwiki. and i found his image on a website. bottom of that website stated that PRS Legislative Research is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. can i upload that image to commons under same licence and use same site as source.
––KEmel49talk,Uploads 04:33, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[
- Hi KEmel49 Normally, I would think it would be OK to do so as long as the photo was the original content of that website and not a photo they got from somewhere else; however, right below the licensing statement you mentioned in your post it also clearly states "Copyright © 2024 prsindia.org All Rights Reserved." and it also says of the website's disclaimer page that the content can only be reproduced for non-commercial use. Since "all rights reserved" and "non-commercial use" are too restrictive for Commons, this complicate things and makes it less clear which license applies to which content. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:25, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly and KEmel49: It seems to be a photo from somewhere else. In fact, according to results from TinEye, it's a Lok Sabha portrait. Dubidubno (talk) 13:01, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

You can subscribe to your own watchlist via RSS or email and keep an archive of every update, but note that email will only send you a new email if you haven't viewed a page and will not send emails for bot edits. So to have an indefinitely long-term watchlist, use RSS subscriptions. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 13:13, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

In Categories there are usually added the descriptive articles in English like here. What is the most straightforward way to upload 600MB+ webm files of aerial drone video footage that I own the copyright to?
I have shot, curated, and edited video footage of nature that is taken from overhead with my DJI Mavic Air 2, while travelling across countryside Japan. I have high quality aerial video footage of forests, mountains, rivers and seas from across Okinawa Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Fukui Prefecture, Shiga Prefecture, Kyoto Prefecture, Hyogo Prefecture, and Okayama Prefecture, and would like to upload it to Commons under a free licence. The usual upload form that I normally use has a maximum upload file size of 100MB, or 5GB if a whitelisted URL is provided; neither of these seem to allow me to upload my content to Commons. Is there another way in which I can do this?
Currently there is very little drone video content from Japan available on Commons, and I would like to remedy this. I am officially registered as a drone operator under MLIT DIPS until July 2027, so I also have the luxury of being able to produce even more Japan-based content in the future, since Japan is a country where drone flight is otherwise prohibited, which probably explains the lack of content contributed by Commons users. I would prefer to upload my content directly to a free-licence content repository like Commons, so people can freely and easily download and reuse the files for their own projects (e.g. for filler B-roll scenes), rather than to YouTube where the average user may not know how to jump through all the hoops and hurdles to obtain the video files. --benlisquareTalk•Contribs 04:24, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- There is Commons:Maximum file size to consider. This refers to Help:Chunked_upload a feature of Special:UploadWizard. Commons:Upload tools lists a video tool at them bottom.
- Personally, I don't have any experience with large files, but found Commons:Command-line_upload#Python_Wikipedia_Bot convenient for series of small ones. Not sure if and how it works for large files.
- If you add drone videos, it's definitely worth also adding photos from these as you did above. At File:From Preda to Bergün with Rhaetian Railway, aerial video.webm, I tried to add thumbnails of key sequences.

Are temporary image files for seeking context supported?
I am in the midst of processing a series of historical images documenting the fall of the Berlin Wall, street protests in East Germany, and the development of the Velvet Revolution in Prague. This is a multi‑stage exercise that involves scanning and post‑processing the analog images. But it also involves digging into the historical contexts of the material. I would like to parallelize this work. So can I upload low‑res scans to Wikimedia to get help with that interpretation — and then later delete these files? That temporary low quality material would also be clearly watermarked "PROOF" so that it can be easily identified as transient. TIA, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 08:11, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- @RobbieIanMorrison: Probably technically yes, but why would it be any harder to upload the full-res files in the first place? - Jmabel ! talk 21:38, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Hello and thanks for responding. The first scans were rough and low quality and are now being repeated and the images edited for contrast and clarity and such. I also like to add good EXIF metadata to the proper upload so that information is also captured in the file and remains on download (but I guess one can reissue another variant with just some revised metadata later on). So it looks like I should just wait until I have done as much as I can from my side before publishing on Wikimedia. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 09:02, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- @RobbieIanMorrison: I hadn't considered the better scans not yet being available. Yes, if it is somehow useful, you can upload the available but less good scan first, then overwrite it with a better scan later. (It's OK to overwrite your own upload with an improved image.) Just don't use ImageNote or anything else that would be invalidated by having an image whose dimensions are different.
- In short, you would not delete, but could overwrite with a better version. If something significant changes in your knowledge, in principle you could also rename. We try not to do too much renaming here, so if for a lot of these you won't immediately be able to give appropriate filenames, you might hold off on doing too many uploads. But feel free to upload a few that you might need some help with. - Jmabel ! talk 14:59, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- To give scale for "We try not to do too much renaming here," someone recently requested renaming for a couple of hundred of their own uploads, and the resulting backlog was cleared in a day or so. So if we're talking about fewer than say 250 files, I wouldn't worry about getting the name wrong initially if that makes your workflow easier. --bjh21 (talk) 16:22, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel and Bjh21: Thanks for your replies. Given there is no straightforward way of creating short‑lived image files, I will press on with the strategy of collecting as much information as I can outside of Wikimedia Commons first. Notwithstanding, the responses on this particular thread did clarify some workflow issues for me. Thanks. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 22:01, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

Old painting with Copyright restriction
I was hoping to upload Still Life with Chocolate Service (1770), but when downloading the image from the Spanish museum website the image is claimed to be "Copyright ©Museo Nacional del Prado". Is this because it is a high-quality image? Are there any work-arounds? Rollinginhisgrave (talk) 00:56, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Rollinginhisgrave: The museum doesn't hold the copyright, so their claim is baseless. You can upload the file, but please make sure you provide all the details (author, source, date, etc.).
{{PD-Art|PD-old-100-expired}}
is the right license. Yann (talk) 09:23, 13 September 2024 (UTC)- @Rollinginhisgrave: Here is some more background, involving case law from the United Kingdom from 2023. In that ruling and quoting from Wikipedia EN on Digital copies: "A November 2023 Appeal Court judgement (THJ v. Sheridan, 2023) by Lord Justice Arnold clarified that, in the UK, no new copyright is created in making a photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional public domain artwork, and that this has been the case since 2009." See: Lord Justice Arnold (20 November 2023). THJ v Sheridan. United Kingdom: Court of Appeal. If you read that Wikipedia EN section further, you will find a similar sentiment from the UK Intellectual Property Office issued in 2014/2015. In the absence of Wikimedia policy (my searches revealed nothing), my suggestion is that you ignore the copyright notice and upload the file in question as public domain. Adding all images in a category to a watchlist
Is there an easy way to do this? Not the category itself, but the individual images within it. Thanks, Choliamb (talk) 12:16, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Choliamb: Hi, and welcome. While your account is set to "Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist" in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist (the default), you may use one of our file-related tools like VFC, AWB, or COM:JWB to prepend {{subst:void}}. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:23, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. First ensure that every file I edit is added to my watchlist, then make a null edit to every file I want to watch. Clever. But will the addition of the void show up as an edit in the file's edit history? I'd like to avoid driving other users crazy by saturation bombing their watchlists with a string of identical edits that do nothing. Choliamb (talk) 18:59, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Rather than make a string of nothing edits, a fairly easy way to do this is with AWB: you can make a list of pages from a category, copy and paste that list into your raw watchlist, and this can be done in two minutes without making needless edits. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:10, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

2,320 files needing review
Please take a look at Category:Taiwan Cultural Memory Bank. Currently, I see a total of 2,320 files in the category and it looks like they were all taken from the same website: https://memory.culture.tw/ I didn't check them all, but I did look at quite a few. I randomly checked over 500 files of the licensing and found that none of them had been reviewed by a reviewer. If you go to see the category, you'll see that it contains thousands of photos of all Taiwan and printed matter of all kinds. For example,
- This page: Category:Lanyang Literature Award, it contains 49 files and 1 subcategory; however, 48 files are works from the Lanyang Literature Award winners and they are all scanned from printed matter.
- This page: Category:Lanyang Literature Award winners, it contains 28 files and they are group photos of the winners receiving their awards.
2,320 files in the category, I don't know how many files were actually not been reviewed by a reviewer. I'd be worried if source link is dead in the future. In order to avoid deleting files, we would better take some time to review the licensing and the source links. Could you please review the 2,320 files?--125.230.85.226 20:48, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Copyright holder's role
I have an image I wish to upload. The copyright holder is willing to send me an authorization email with the required license (CC-BY-SA) to upload the image. COM:VRT says: ... ask the author to forward the email with their clear statement of permission to permissions-commonswikimedia.org, including the full header and any previously exchanged correspondence with you.
Whereas COM:ET says: if you are releasing a work for which you are acting on the copyright holder's behalf, you may be asked to provide proof of this authorization such as a forwarded email message with full Internet headers from the copyright holder designating you as their representative in this matter.
It is not very clear what my role and the copyright holder's role are. From the latter, it seems that the copyright holder's role is limited to authorizing me. Is it sufficient that the copyright owner mails me the authorization to upload, and I forward that email (with headers) to permissions-commons @ wikimedia.org? If so, do we have an email template for this authorization? AltJay (talk) 13:03, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- @AltJay: copyright holder should send directly to the email address provided at COM:VRT. It's a good idea if they cc you so that you are in the loop.
- I think the part you are quoting in the second paragraph is about uploading on behalf of an organization (where we need to know if you represent the organization). Not sure of that last, but I'm sure it's not relevant here, and I'm in an airport waiting for a flight right now so I don't have time to research the context, but certain that it is not this case. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- I checked again, the quoted part is not about uploading on behalf of an organization. The sentence covers multiple scenarios separated by semi-colons, and the quoted part is only for the case of if you are releasing a work for which you are acting on the copyright holder's behalf. However, from what you are saying about the copyright holder having to mandatorily send the email directly, I think the paragraph on COM:ET is confusing, and may need to be tweaked.
- The email template given there does not have content about authorizing an uploader, so why would an uploader have to send email headers about a different email from the copyright holder, when the copyright holder has already sent a direct email consenting to a license? AltJay (talk) 18:39, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, if it mentions "email headers" it's got to be about demonstrating authenticity when forwarding an email (which should only happen as a last resort, anyway). Again, sorry I don't have a lot of time to go into this, if someone else does they should feel free; the point for your case is that the copyright-holder should send the email. - Jmabel ! talk 07:10, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Adding source tag for a large amount of images
I recently received multiple notices on my talk page from @Εὐθυμένης stating that the 'File source is not properly indicated' for nearly, if not all, of my photos. I personally own all these photos, as I captured them myself. According to Wikipedia's guidelines, if you created the content yourself, you should enter Own work as the source. I can do this, but since I have a large number of images, adding this tag to each one individually would take hours. Is there a way to add this tag in bulk, or is there an easier way to confirm that I own the images? WikiEnthuasiastGR30 (talk) 03:13, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Krd, should this be solved by VRT or an AWB/cat-a-lot run? All the Best -- Chuck Talk 05:22, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @WikiEnthuasiastGR30: Your photos were already marked with "template:own" in the source field before being tagged by Εὐθυμένης. Do you have any idea of why Εὐθυμένης tagged them? If the tag was placed for no reason, then IMO it's the burden of Εὐθυμένης to remove the tags. You do not need to add a second copy of the "template:own" as there. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:26, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

SVG translation methods?
Recently, I translated an SVG in Czech to English so that it would display properly on the English Wikipedia. It works perfectly fine on both wikis now, and I assume the way I did things is what could be considered proper (adding systemlanguage
attributes to text elements and editing them accordingly in the SVG Translate tool). However, I notice that certain images, such as File:Hecataeus world map-en.svg, are not translated inside of the SVG itself, but rather use different, separately-uploaded versions of the SVG for each language it has been translated into.
This could be a simple case of pedantry on my part, but the need to split a single vector image into 19 different Commons files for each language it needs to be translated into strikes me as inefficient, as it appears there is a better solution in the form of "native" SVG translation that can be consolidated to a single file and embedded on other wikis, as well as translated, without much hassle. Is this the case? Is this SVG something that could/should be converted to use embedded text translations, or is it split into multiple files for each translated language for good reason? Theki (talk) 17:44, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- I think the problem is that within Wikipedia what is displayed are pngs [4], not svg.
∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 18:25, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- That's something I've noticed. However, it appears to me that most or all wikis have the ability to render an embedded SVG in the language of the wiki, or the default language otherwise. The SVG I translated is displayed here, and you can see the render translated to English, despite the original being in Czech. I think the opposite (it rendering in Czech, the default language) works on the Czech wiki but the image preview is too small for me to verify, and it appears that maximizing it renders it in English, although I surmise that might be because of my device language or something similar. Basically― I think the wikis render the SVGs to PNG based on the most appropriate language. Theki (talk) 18:43, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Theki: that image dates to 2006. I am not certain if the SVG translation was possible back then. Additionally sometimes people will simply not know the translation option and will then create and upload a translated derivative file. MKFI (talk) 06:26, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- At any rate, will it be OK for me to convert it to use embedded text translations, or should I leave it as is? All the translated versions are mostly identical, so it should be trivial (if tedious) to get them all translated into one file. I'll remark that I can't seem to figure out how to get the
switch
element to work with transforms so that I don't have to apply the same attributes to every translated child of the text. Theki (talk) 12:59, 12 September 2024 (UTC)

Formatting the title of a category
I've recently created the category 'Syzygium wilsonii subsp. cryptophlebium'. To be true to standard scientific practice, the title should be formatted as 'Syzygium wilsonii subsp. cryptophlebium', which I tried to do using {{DISPLAYTITLE}} at the very top of the page. This works, but it produces a large ugly red warning at the top of the page as follows:
Warning: Display title "Category:<i>Syzygium wilsonii</i> subsp. <i>cryptophlebium</i>" overrides earlier display title "Category:<i>Syzygium wilsonii subsp. cryptophlebium</i>".

Copiright issues with uploading image
Is using a picture from someone's public instagram ok? I'd like to change the image on the page of Tubbo, a streamer. The image is old and of bad quality and I don't like it very much. logo zespołu teatralnego
logo of the theatre group
good evening; we recently contributed a modest article about our group - Teatr STOP to Wikipedia. It is currently being reviewed by more experienced editors. We would like to place a graphic file in this article in the Teatr infobox template, which is the group's logo. What license should I provide when sending this file? I would like to mention that the symbol in the file is my work (computer graphics), and I used our poster for this purpose, which we have been using for many years. Since 1990, I think. I do not remember the name of the author, whom we paid for the project. We do not have any documents from that time. The poster is still in use, but with minor modifications. Can I do this in some legal way? I would be grateful for your answer
- @Mirontu: Cześć i witaj.
- Hi, and welcome. Assuming you are writing about a theatre in Poland, please see COM:POLAND (Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Poland/pl) and VRT (Commons:Volunteer Response Team/pl), or wait until 70 years after the year following the copyright holder's death. In previous years, when uploading photos to WLM at a certain step, the name of the author of the picture appeared in the corresponding column, by default there was a nickname from the account, which could be changed at this stage. This step is currently missing. Apparently, the system automatically puts the user's nickname by the author. Categorizing redirected categories
I have a category for a topic that has two very different names that are often used by various sources, so I use one as the cat name and the other as a redirect to it:
- Category:Riedl-Pfleiderer process → Category:Anthraquinone process
{{Cat redirect}} says "Redirected categories should...not categorised themselves." In this example, one of the two names also belongs in a certain cat due to it being an eponymous name. Is this a reasonable exception to the cat-redirect notice, so that specifically "Riedl-Pfleiderer process" can be categorized as being eponymous? It is not true that "Anthraquinone process" is eponymous. DMacks (talk) 12:21, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- It's tempting, but in this case I wouldn't as querying the parent of the redirect and its subcategories wont give any result.
- I think, in general, naming relations can refer to secondary names for the category, not necessarily the one in the category name.
∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 13:18, 16 September 2024 (UTC)- Ooh, I didn't think about the mechanical process of going down the tree, and that {{Cat redirect}} is not technically the same as #REDIRECT. I was focused on avoiding having a non-eponymous entry in a cat that is defined as containing eponymous things. DMacks (talk) 18:35, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

How to remove images that have categories already from the uncategorized
Hello, there are many images that have categories but are listed as not having any. How to remove them without doing it individually? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 18:14, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Krok6kola: - hello, have you tried to clear your browser cache? (Ctrl+Fn+F5 on Windows). The second question is why to you want to uncategorise images? All images should really be in at least one category. Regards. Militum professio scriniarii (talk) 21:20, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Militum professio scriniarii: The images are already in categories. It confuses things to have categorized images listed in uncategorized lists. Krok6kola (talk) 21:24, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Krok6kola: - can you give me an example? I am aware of noticable delays in Commons server caches not purging in a timely manner. So that might actually be the issue. Regards. Militum professio scriniarii (talk) 21:45, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Often "uncategorized" comes from a template. @Krok6kola, it would be much easier to talk about a specific file or files that have this problem. - Jmabel ! talk 18:26, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Krok6kola: Do you mean something as this file where there is already the category "Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore 2023"? Wouter (talk) 18:47, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- I think there is a bot doing that occasionally. Wouter's sample might not be the ideal sample, as that category should be hidden and thus not be taken in account.

Not sure if this is called wearing or undressing?
I just saw a very special photograph. Look at this: File:ValerieSilverman. 421.jpg. Looks like taken off her bikini top and also like put on it, because it was glued to her breasts. What categories are appropriate for this case?--125.230.80.47 13:01, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Probably something new. Bikini describes the top as "Bikini with strapless top" and another photo of the same woman wearing the same top (the next photo, File:ValerieSilverman. 519.jpg) as "Strapless top bikini". It may have been taped, rather than glued (glue leaves uglier marks). I doubt it was about to fall off, as it was being pulled on in the next photo. Is it possible for someone to create this - similar to the one at English Wikipedia? My main reason for requesting is to tag image descriptions for information on date of image, when the date of the image is clearly different to the upload date. One such example is File:Wing Parade - RAF Wittering.jpg - those RAF uniforms were in use during the 1950s and early 60s, but categorically not in 2012, or even 1982! Maybe code the template to directly ping the original uploader (if that is actually possible) to request supplying the date of the image. Regards, Militum professio scriniarii (talk) 21:16, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Militum professio scriniarii, I created the template here (forking the one from enwiki). Can you try and let me know if this works okay? Regards, Aafi (talk) 05:35, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Aafi: - Thank you. I just added it to the above file, but I don't see any additional 'maintenance' categories generated, and I don't see any talk page message for the original uploader. I also checked 'What links here' from the template, and the two other files it is used on is not generated any maintenance category. I am not sure how to fix that cat inclusion. Regards. Buongiorno, ho caricato erroneamente delle immagini del Duomo di Macerata che non c'entrano con esso, sono infatti relative al vicino Santuario Basilica della Madonna della Misericordia, che ho poi caricato sulla pagina relativa. For some reason, I can't see the map of Louisiana when the image is on a page, or when I click the link here on WMCommons. All I see is the red highlighted area, without borders, on a blank background. However when I go to https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df/Map_of_Louisiana_highlighting_Vernon_Parish.svg, I see the whole thing. All the other images in Category:Locator maps of parishes of Louisiana work fine. Does anyone know the reason for this? 166.107.163.31 22:52, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, and welcome. For me, it displays fine as a locator map with a clear background. The outlines of the other Parishes in the state are visible in black, and filled in with yellow. This display is just like the other maps in that category with names starting "Map of Louisiana highlighting", except File:Map of Louisiana highlighting Southwest Louisiana.svg, which shows the non-Southwest Parishes filled in with white. Help with licensing my own work
Hi, i recently got few notifications of my uploads being copyright violations. Most of them are pictures i took throughout the years an i see i have mentioned them as my own work. One recent image is from a screenshot from google maps, and a very earlier one from an old souvenir book of a college which in nowhere had any mentions of the photo being copyrighted. I really want to get these things done in a right way because ive already named as a user with bad history. I need to make things right, since there no intentions for me to own woks of others. I need help in this. Someone mentioned exif data of images. Do uploads from phones auautomatically add that data or i have to separately enter them? And why non of my pics which i know i took doent show that data? VihirLak007 (talk) 16:27, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- A screenshot from google maps is not your work, it's a screenshot of a copyrighted work from google. In general, faithful reproductions of 2D works don't generate a new copyright, so we are interested in the original copyright of photographs. Regarding EXIF, it depends on the phone. I take photographs with my Samsung phone and the EXIF is automatically added when I upload from my phone. But it could be different for older phones. Abzeronow (talk) 16:33, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- And all contemporary cameras also generate EXIF data, not just phones. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:40, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Justin @Abzeronow Noted thanks. Also here is the google's use of material info for screenshots on google maps and the needed atributions here, with all these, can't a screenshot still be uploaded on commons to use in an article? was the screenshot that got deleted. Need a map image like that for an article. How can it be done, need expert guidance since im new here. VihirLak007 (talk) 22:02, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- Screenshots of some things can be uploaded, if the thing being screenshot is freely licensed. Google owns the material in Google Earth and Google Maps and has not licensed it to be freely shared. Please see COMM:LICENSE for what is and is not acceptable in terms of licensing. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:04, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- @VihirLak007: "nowhere had any mentions of the photo being copyrighted". Under the Berne Convention, which all but about half a dozen countries in the world have adopted, photos (and anything else eligible for copyright) are copyrighted upon creation. There is no need to make any overt claim of copyright. - 21:42, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

Deletion of "Own Work" images
- Can an "Own work" deletion be based on whether the Exif information is available or not?
- If a user have uploaded images that violates copyrights 2 years back when he/she is a newbie on commons (and wasn't active on commons for the past 2 years) be blocked permanetly on commons? and for any mistakes(honest mistakes, not stuff like faking a license) he/she might do while uploading in the future? can they be blocked on commons for that?
- Just because some of obvious copyvio uploads a uploader might have done, can all of his uploads be nominated for deletion by assuming all are 'unlikely' own work and also because they have small file sizes?
(Yes this is about me, need help to get things right) VihirLak007 (talk) 21:42, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- @VihirLak007: There is no way to answer these questions in the abstract, other than to say, "Yes, if you have an extensive pattern of not understanding copyright, then as a precaution we may have to delete all of your uploads, and if you persist in uploading copyright violations after warnings your account may be blocked." In a concrete case, there might be a different answer, but you are not asking any concrete questions here. - Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

- It cannot. Google maps are copyrighted, and they do not offer a free license.
- Between this and your prior question, I would strongly recommend that until you get a much better understanding of copyrights you refrain from uploading any files that are not either entirely your own work or already published with an explicit, specific free license. - Jmabel ! talk 21:51, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- I see, i understand now. The extensive pattern mentioned was actually the month of september in 2022. Most probably i was excited as a new comer uploading here and the recent aerial screenshot. I understand my mistake here, i shall read about license more.

- You could possibly do that, if you're just looking for a site to host such images. If, however, the reason you're uploading the images is because you want to use them in some Wikipedia article, you could run into problems based on local project polcies and for techinical reasons. NC-ND content is going to be treated as non-free content by local projects such as English Wikipedia and perhaps by some other language Wikipedias that allow such content to be used; moreover, there are many language Wikipedia that only allow "free images" to be used. In addition to all of that, I also believe only files being hosted on WMF servers can be internally linked for display on WMF project pages; in other words, links to files hosted on external sites won't be displayed by the WMF software. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:29, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
Picture in the public domain but without documentation
In doing research, I was able to contact someone who had a picture of the Currituck Shooting Club from 1920, making the image public domain. However, I have no way of proving this, except that the museum which displayed the image and the person who gave it to me both indicate it is from 1920. Not sure how to proceed on this.
Thank you,
Packer1028 (talk) 04:47, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- The general answer is that you don't have to prove it, but should include enough information that others can come to the same conclusion as you. For U.S. images, the main issue is the date of publication. If it wasn't published at the time, but only after being digitised by the museum, it might very well still be under copyright (if the publication happened in a specific span of years).
- Make sure you include the information you have in the file description, perhaps with some additional comments on the talk page. Link the museum page where the image is shown, to allow people to do research via the museum.

- Hmm, it may not be public domain. I know it was made in 1920 (have confirmed with the owners of the original through email), but I can't prove when it was published; I assumed creation date was the big factor. I gather the owners of the original print are fine with it being uploaded here, but (1) I haven't asked directly because I assumed PD, and (2) I don't know how to proceed based on my new understanding of PD and publication. Would this involve VRT at all?

With a few exceptions (e.g. works created by U.S. federal government employees as part of their jo) any photo that is even vaguely contemporary is copyrighted from creation, and to host it here on Commons we need a free license from the owner of the copyright, which is typically the photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Incorrect template claims about heraldic images
I'm having trouble tracking down where some particular wording "lives", that is showing up in the description of various heraldic images, e.g. here. The templated text makes the baldfaced claim "Unauthorised use of arms is a criminal offence. Without authorisation, arms cannot be borne, used, or displayed by anyone other than their rightful owner." This is not actually true in many (probably most) jurisdictions, and even for heraldically restrictive ones, the wording is subtly still wrong anyway. It should be modified to read something like "Unauthorised use of arms is a criminal offence in some jurisdictions, in which arms cannot be publicly borne, displayed, or otherwise used by anyone other than their rightful owner without authorisation." — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 07:14, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- @SMcandlish: it came from Template:Insignia-Scotland-Grant/en. Pinging User:Billbowery, the only person who ever edited that template; however, I see he has not contributed to Commons for about 4 years, nor to any WMF project this calendar year. - Jmabel ! talk 15:35, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- @SMcCandlish: The usual Template:Insignia has a general wording considered applicable to most cases. Apparently, in 2020, a user believed it was a good idea, as one of their first edits on Commons, to create a different warning template, specifically for the jurisdiction of Scotland, "Template:Insignia-Scotland-Grant" (see there), which is the template you speak of. That template may or may not have been useful, but it referred explicitly to Scotland, so at least the possibility of confusion with other jurisdictions was limited. In 2024, another user thought that the specific templates for different jurisdictions were not a good idea and redirected them to the usual template (see this edit and the other edits of 16 March 2024 there), although it's not obvious if the initiative of that user to remove all those templates was sufficiently discussed somewhere. Normally, the redirection would suffice to prevent the display of "Template:Insignia-Scotland-Grant". However, its text is still displayed in "File:Arms_of_the_House_of_MacDougall_(after_1737).svg" because of the format in which it was inserted into that page (through autotranslate, which apparently takes the text from the "/en" subpage, which still displays the text). The text you wished to modify is in that subpage Template:Insignia-Scotland-Grant/en. But modifying a jurisdiction-specific template to speak of other jurisdictions may not be useful. If the specific template is not supposed to be used, you might prefer to simply remove it from the file description page. That will leave the usual template, which is there also. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:44, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- If this is meant to be jurisdiction-specific language, then it needs to specify (in user-visible form) the actual jurisdiction. However, since Scotland is not alone in such heraldic legal restrictions, there doesn't seem to be a clear purpose in changing this to read "In Scotland, unauthorised use of arms is a criminal offence ...", since it would also be against heraldic law in the rest of the UK and in a number of (but not all) Commonwealth jurisdictions, and a several continental European ones. I.e., the ultimate solution seems to be having a single template that warns that laws on the subject vary by country (perhaps one with parameters to give some country-specific annotations if they really seem pertinent, but it's hard to figure why they would be; this is a global image server, not a storefront in Inverness). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 22:29, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
Template:Coa blazon has a similar error, and I don't know how to fix it, because the text is buried somewhere behind an "autotranslate" module. The text in question reads "This coat of arms was drawn based on its blazon which – being a written description – is free from copyright." But this is legally wrong; things are not free from copyright because they are textual. There is no connection betweeen the concept "written/textual" and "free from copyright"; the two claims are entirely independent of each other, like "She is tall" and "She is from France". Worse, this template contradicts its own documentation, which in small part reads: "Certain governments have extended copyright protection to new and recent blazons of heraldic devices ...". So, the material in the template needs to be fixed in two ways. First, the default wording should read "This coat of arms was drawn based on its blazon, which is a written description and is free from copyright." Second, we need to be able to turn off the text " and is free from copyright" with a parameter, for cases like the documentation mentions that are in fact copyrighted. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 09:17, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- That sounds like a subject best taken up—at least initially—on the talk page of that template. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I'm in paritcular looking for Commons-expert advice on how to figure out where the storage location of this text is, in both cases. I use Wikipedia a lot, but it's generally much more transparent about where the actual text in templates is (often with a tiny "e" for edit one can click to get to it). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 22:21, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- It's the same principle as in the other example above, and for many multilanguage templates, the English text is in the English subpage Template:Coa blazon/en, the Spanish text is in the Spanish subpage Template:Coa blazon/es, etc. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:49, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- But this means that changing the wording in just one language isn't that good an idea. I think somebody experienced should assist in the procedure and check that the result is consistent with actual usage and between languages. –LPfi (talk) 20:43, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

Collaborative work
Is it possible to license a collaborative work of two people (I tried File:Gr-Georgia-Damasioti-geschnitten.ogg)? In the example, Osenji made the recording (of someone else's voice, but that is not the question), sent me the file and I cut and uploaded it. If a double permission is not possible, I suppose that the person who recorded must send the permission form to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and the uploader gives the license, right? Things would be easy if the same person records and uploads. But this costs more time and people are not always familiar with the process, so I looked for a shortcut and possibility of cooperation. - If a permission is necessary, does it have to be given for every single file separateley? Thank you. Reisen8 (talk) 08:51, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Reisen8: There is not really much other way to establish the licensing if Commons is the first place you are uploading. Alternatively, you could first upload somewhere else that is clearly under your joint control, and indicate the relevant free license and desired (joint) credit there, then cite that as the source when uploading. You can certainly give permission for multiple files in a single email to the VRT (permissions-commons etc., as you noted above). You can upload them, send the relevant emails referencing the filenames, and follow the instructions at {{PP}} so they should not get deleted while VRT is dealing with it.
- FWIW, questions about VRT are usually best asked at Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team/Noticeboard, but I'm pretty sure that in this case they'd say more or less what I just wrote. - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, Jmabel, then I'll move to VRT with my question. The thing is that I have to find a way allowing to give the permission also for future files - imagine a list with names to be pronounced as part of a project which will run for a long time. If people abroad will have to send a mail for each of those mini-files they will probably lose interest. I have to check that with VRT. All the best! logging in
This complaint also applies to Wikipedia. When trying to log in, a user is presented with a check box "remain logged on" or something like that. It is very convenient to remain logged on. But the amount of time that one has to check that box is less than a second or two. Try it. 192.80.107.0 16:27, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- This is not the case in general. What sort of device, browser, and operating system are you on? - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- There is no apparent reason why the check box would disappear before the rest of the page Special:UserLogin or before clicking the log in button. The problem might have to do with the software you use or maybe you somehow automated your log in procedure instead of manually clicking the log in button. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:08, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

upload Suno song
I need to upload a Chinese song produced by Suno AI to enhance the description on Chinese Wikipedia. This will provide valuable context and information. Thank you.Idlcn (talk) 07:04, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Idlcn: the PRC is one of the few countries that does not currently consider all AI outputs to be in the public domain: see Commons:AI-generated media. I have no idea what jurisdiction you live in.
- That said, if there is no copyright problem and it is needed for an article, Commons:Audio provides information about permitted and preferred formats for audio. - Jmabel ! talk 20:00, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Sorry ,I forgot to say ,I am Taiwanese, and Taiwan is not part of China. If the audio files I upload are considered to violate Chinese laws, then sensitive topics like the Tiananmen Square incident would also face the same scrutiny. It's crucial to recognize that Chinese citizens must use a VPN to access Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, highlighting the restrictions on information access imposed by the Chinese government. Thank you! Idlcn (talk) 22:13, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Idlcn: "Taiwan is not part of China": I believe both of the relevant governments would disagree with that statement (one more wholeheartedly than the other), but it is certainly not subject to PRC copyright law. - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 23 September 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your responses. As a Taiwanese user, I want to clarify that copyright considerations here differ from those in the PRC, and Taiwan has its own legal framework.
I seek to upload an audio file to Chinese Wikipedia featuring a song produced by Suno AI. This upload is essential to demonstrate Suno’s ability to generate Chinese songs, enhancing the understanding of AI's role in music. It’s important to note that many Chinese citizens need to use a VPN to access Wikipedia, making this contribution even more significant.
Additionally, English songs generated by Suno can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, contributing to the global repository of AI-generated music.
I assure you that I will comply with all relevant copyright guidelines. Allowing this upload would significantly support Wikipedia’s mission of providing accessible knowledge.
Thank you for considering my request!Idlcn (talk) 01:07, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

Adding source of derivative work in an uploaded file - an image within an image
I need to indicate the source of a derivative work - I uploaded an image of an orchestra accompanying a film. A still image from the film is in my original photo. The film is now in public domain, so there is no copyright issue. I have the relevant information but I don't know how to edit the file description to incorporate it. I don't understand how to use the specific code. Can anyone help? Thanks Slwheatley (talk) 20:56, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Slwheatley: it would help enormously if you would indicate a specific file instead of asking this question in the abstract. - Jmabel ! talk 09:03, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Slwheatley: Please see the message at the top of Category:Metropolis (film). For historical reasons having to do in part with confused discussions in its early months of existence, Commons still has a peculiar and cumbersome internal policy stating that a file on Commons must be free in its country of "origin" (the country where it is first published). That internal policy has been diversely interpreted and applied. If your photo was first published on Commons, located in the United States, then its country of origin is the United States and your photo, and everything in it, is free there. However, an application of the Commons policy means that all objects seen in an image must also be free in their respective countries of first publication. You can may upload your file to the English-language Wikipedia, which applies the United Sates copyright law only, but not to the Deutsch-language Wikipedia, which also applies the German copyright law. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:05, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
Image violation
Hi!
One of the pictures that I uploaded to the Wiki commons was flagged by one of the users because of the copyright infringement. The article is about a biography of the person I was writing about and the image I uploaded was from the persons Instagram account. How do I dispute it?
I apologize if this questions looks too easy to answer, I just want to make sure that the article won't be affected.
Thank you in advance! Pypopus (talk) 05:06, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Pynopus. You might want to take a look at Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images for reference, but most likely the only way for Commons to keep this image is going to be having the copyright holder of the photo (i.e. the person who took it, not the subject of the photo) to give their Commons:Consent. Since you seem to be saying you didn't take the photo yourself, then whoever did is the copyright holder. Commons needs some way to formally verify that that person is OK with the file being uploaded to Commons in accordance with Commons:Licensing. If you know who the copyright holder of the photo is, you can try requesting their consent per en:Wikipedia:Example requests for permission; however, only the copyright holder or their representatives can release the copyright holder's creative work under the type of licensing that Commons accepts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:17, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Do remember: well over 95% of what you find on the Internet is copyrighted and does not offer a free license. You can't just grab a random photo from the web, wave a wand over it, and turn it into something that can be reused freely. - Jmabel ! talk 09:06, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

- @Adry9509: Assuming you mean the Main Page of the Simple English Wikipedia, that would be a matter for that project's policies. It's easy enough to confirm that the source video on YouTube is marked with a CC BY 3.0 licence. But there is always the question of whether the channel that posted the video actually had the right to grant that licence. In this case, it's notable that there's a corresponding video on the main Vogue channel, and it isn't marked CC BY 3.0. So the question is, does Vogue Taiwan have the right to relicense videos from Vogue under a free licence? And while I was writing this it seems that Aafi has decided that the answer is "yes". --bjh21 (talk) 11:04, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Bjh21, thanks for bringing this up. Well, frankly, I did no go too deep into this and trusted the statement by VOGUE Taiwan that the file is freely licensed. Hi,
I tried to upload a 1.5 GByte PDF file. I got various error messages. Currently I constantly keep getting "Pathologie4.pdf Could not acquire lock. Somebody else is doing something to this file." Help with identifying a grasshopper species (and species in general)
Hi,
I uploaded some photos of a grasshopper earlier today (e.g., File:20240920 greasshopper on corn point meadows PD205782.jpg).
I thought I had identified the correct species, but now I'm not so sure.
Wondering if there is a place on WM where I can get advice on the correct species.
Thank you

- @Pdanese: I see that the species has now been IDd, but in future you can apply categories like Category:Unidentified insects or one of its sub-categories; or you can upload your images to iNaturalist (but please still upload them here also). Using iNaturalist has the added advantage that your record contributes to the scientific monitoring of biodiversity; see com:INaturalist. Clarification on US State Department Copyright Law
Hi, I have a question regarding U.S. State Department copyright law as it pertains to ambassadors. Since ambassadors operate under the jurisdiction of the Department of State, I understand that images depicting their official duties are considered public domain. Does this mean that any images they upload to social media platforms (such as Twitter/X) while performing their official duties are also in the public domain and, as such, can be used on Wikipedia? Titanciwiki (talk) 06:05, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Titanciwiki I believe it depends on who takes the photograph and where its published. If, for example, the photograph is taken by an employee of the US embassy (who isn't a local contract hire), it's taken as part of their official duties, and it's uploaded to an official US Government website (social media account), then perhaps it would fall under {{PD-USGov-DOS}}. On the other hand, if the photo was taken by someone else (e.g. a photographer working for the host country) but just is being hosted on an official US Government website (social media account) or is being hosted on someone's personal website or social media account (even if the person is a US government employee), then it might not be considered and official work of the US Government and thus could be eligible for copyright protection. This links to the copyright information page for the US Embassy in the UK, and I'd image most the other US embassies worldwide have similar pages. If that's not sufficient for you to do a self-assessment of the photo you want to use, it would probably be easier for someone to help you if could provide a link to the photo want to upload. Finally and just for reference, Commons is mainly concerned with the licensing of the content it hosts and whether it meets COM:SCOPE. Commons isn't too concerned with how the content it hosts is being used by the various Wikimedia Foundation projects like English Wikipedia. Encyclopedic decisions regarding image tend to be left to each project to sort out; so, Commons hosting something doesn't automatically guarantee that a project will decide to use it, and such things sometimes need to be resolved through discussion at the local project level. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:30, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
Issues with uploading a new version of an SVG
As depicted in this file:
I'm not able to upload a new version of File:Forms of government.svg. I've checked the metadata, and there's no HTML in there, so I have no idea what the issue is. I've even attempted to reupload the file in its current state and the same error has shown up, the only way to change this file currently is by reverting it to previous revisions. – GlowstoneUnknown (Talk) 01:25, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
Please delete this (duplicate) image
It is a bit more than that; the near duplicate is appallingly bad low resolution, and may have been uploaded by a user who was blocked around ten years ago. That must be more than enough enough justification.
This is the one to delete; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A10a-81-0979-10tfwCC-1990.jpg
This is the one to keep; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairchild_OA-10A_Thunderbolt_II,_USA_-_Air_Force_AN0687262.jpg
FYI; I am (or was) an aircraft enthusiast, and I confirm that the two images are of the same individual Wing Commander's aircraft (serial 81-0979), same location, same date, just a slightly different angle. I wasn't there myself, but it was a photo-shoot at RAF Waddington, 27 April 1990, open to the public, with around 50 aircraft arranged specifically for the cameras.
Meanwhile, I will manually visit the 3 or 4 pages that have mistakenly opted for the low-res version simply because it mentioned the Wing Commander connection. Give me 20 minutes head start to switch the images on these pages.

Help in mentioning a variable source
A tag was put on my upload saying its a derivative work, File:Tæm̆bili Pandol 2024 Enderamulla Church Feast.jpg; should i mention all the villagers who made this pandol? I don't understand the requirment. pls explain this matter. its like asking to mention all the people who helped to build a christmas tree thats in a pic. Whats the solution on this. VihirLak007 (talk) 19:31, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- The photo appears to be on Facebook, posted prior to your upload here by an account whose name does not match yours, and tagged all-rights-reserved there. But even if you did take the photograph, there is no freedom of panorama in Sri Lanka, so you would actually seem to need explicit permission from each of the builders and/or designers. - im now reading the intellectual property act in SL. Can i know what category might a decorative arch made for a church feast fall in? VihirLak007 (talk) 19:56, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- I just read the section 8, from what i understad is;
- Section 8: Works Not Protected by Copyright
- This section explains that certain elements are not protected by copyright, which includes Ideas, concepts, procedures, methods of operation, or mathematical concepts as such.
- This means that ideas, methods, or concepts in and of themselves are not subject to copyright protection. Only their expression in a tangible form can be protected. So, if a decorative arch (like a Thambili Thorana) follows a traditional or widely known pattern, it might not qualify for protection unless there is some new, original expression or design in its creation (which havent changed since the begining of the tradition).
- While the Act does not specifically mention "traditional cultural expressions" or "public domain," it's generally understood in copyright law that elements that are part of cultural heritage or have been in long-standing public use may fall outside copyright protection unless there's an original aspect added to the work.
- Thus, if a decorative arch is based on cultural traditions or forms, it is likely not protected unless new, creative, or original elements are introduced into its design or structure (again, the pandol form has never being changed in the history since the begining).
- here you can see picture o fthe pandol over the years. Its the same traditional design. oldest available picture is from 1990 and 1991(100th jubilee).more older picture wouldnt hv been available since even in 1991 only one man owned a camera in the whole parish. The pandol was made every years except for 2020 for lack of king coconuts and covid pandemic in 2023. VihirLak007 (talk) 20:24, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Isn't a construction of something "a tangible form"? Taking that this is literally the same thing that has been re-built every year and that the original designer is not known, protection for anonymous works lasts 70 years. If it's been modified, then that might reset the clock. And the copyright law explicitly says "expression of folklore" are protected. DMacks (talk) 20:48, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ah right. "expression of folklore". Noted. Okay moving forward what should be done to the file? is there another way to still keep it on commons? or to be used only in named articles. Any changes to the source? VihirLak007 (talk) 21:04, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- i might be wrong but i feel like in this case, if they had originally named the file let say "view of an old church in sri lanka, during a feast celebration" this might have a different outcome. since it does not emphasize on a item in the pic but a general view one might see. Just saying. Wikiceylon.pvt (talk) 21:09, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- The name doesn't matter if the content is unacceptable: the protected part of the image is not de minimis. Sometimes we get lucky and it's easier to catch potentially problematic content. Licensing policy is complicated, as you are learning. DMacks (talk)

Copyright help regarding File:Bonte Thatcher at UTSW.jpg
Hello
What tag would best fit images from this source?
https://utswlibrary.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/about
Specifically since it says: "Items within the UT Southwestern Image Archives are provided for non-commercial, personal, or research use. For these purposes, you may reproduce (print, photocopy, or download) materials without prior permission"
Thank you.
Nightryder84 (talk) 02:51, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Nightryder84: Commons doesn't accept content that's been released under a non-commercial license per COM:LJ; so, Commons is unlikely going to be able to keep this file because the licensing the UT Southwestern Image Archives is using is too restrictive for Commons. Given the information on the photo found at here, it seems likely that someone working for UT Southwestern took the photo in 1991 as part of their duties in a sort of en:work for hire type of arrangement, which means UT Southwestern is most likely the copyright holder; so, you would need its COM:CONSENT for the file to be kept on Commons. Others might assess this file's copyright differently, and you can wait to see if others respond if you want; however, I think your two options here are to ask the UTSW for its consent or tag the file for speedy deletion yourself per COM:CSD#G7. Licensing status of a photo that was used under false pretenses
I've just moved File:Willie Hagan.jpg to that title from File:Fretïmio Assocão di Planka.jpg based on its EXIF data and a post at a Wikipedia criticism site. en:Fretïmio Assocão di Planka has been deleted as a hoax. It's a 2010 photo, based on EXIF data, and is credited in those data to several photographers, presumably a firm, working for a branch of California State University. I'm unsure whether Commons has permission to use it. Help regarding an answer to that question, please, and if it is ok for it to remain, could someone fill out the necessary form fields? Yngvadottir (talk) 03:14, 28 September 2024 (UTC) P.S.: The same Wikipedia criticism site now has a post saying that the AfD traces the photo to this university news release. Yngvadottir (talk) 03:20, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- It seems like this could be speedily deleted per COM:CSD#G3 or COM:CSD#F6 since the original license was obviously an intentional attempt at COM:LL and the file's use could be seen as violation of the personality rights of the subject of the photo (even if he was unaware of it); moreover, there's already a photo of the subject being used in en:Willie J. Hagan (assuming that's the same person) which means an immediate use for this photo isn't apparent. If the EXIF data is correct, the copyright holder would either be Karen Tapia or the university; so, hers or its COM:CONSENT would be needed for this to be kept, unless someone wants to argue this is {{PD-CAGov}}. FWIW, this seems to be the same Karen Tapia, and she seems to have worked for the university around the time the photo is supposed to have been taken; furthermore, the university does seem to be claiming copyright ownership of photos currently appearing on its official website. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:02, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
How to upload audio?
How to upload audio? Baginda 480 (talk) 15:12, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- You can upload wav or ogg files. There are ways to convert mp3 to ogg, but sound recordings typically need to be free as far as composition (the melody); the performance (band or musician playing it); and the recording itself. Abzeronow (talk) 17:33, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

Majkl Pris (talk) 14:29, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Majkl Pris I'm using google translate here. The page you link states "2024 © Інститут енциклопедичних досліджень НАН України", so for that particular photo to be allowed on Commons, you need the permission of the copyright holder, usually the photographer. - Hi, the photo is presumably copyrighted and can't be uploaded here at Commons; the creator/copyright holder of the file would have to release it under a free license. It may be possible to upload it directly to Wikipedia as meta:Non-free content. Consigned (talk) 16:08, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Informal(?) permission to upload article not in public domain
Back in January, while constructing Halenbeck Hall, I found a photo by the St. Cloud State University Archives Facebook page that was a black and white exterior of the building from 1980. I asked whether or not I could use the photo for the Wikipedia page on their Facebook post, and they said I could as long as I credit them. The question is...would getting permission on Facebook be considered acceptable, or should I have gone for a more formal approach by emailing them? I will provide the link to the granted permission if requested. I never noticed that St. Cloud State University Archives responded to me all the way back in January until moments ago. Thanks. I'm just trying to play by the rules. Wjenkins96 (talk) 06:20, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Wjenkins96 Thanks for trying. It's possible, but has to be done right, see the FB section at WP:A picture of you. This assumes that the FB "holder" is the copyright holder, otherwise the copyright holder (usually the photographer) has to give permission via some other route on that page, like COM:VRT. Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:49, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Permission routes?
Hello I've been reading a lot of help pages (and this forum) and am struggling to find a list of examples of acceptable proof of permission sources. If, for example, you emailed someone and got a response to approve - how would you use that on here?. Trying to figure out the best way to seek permission (to change a person's image) that would be acceptable to your wizard / guidelines etc. Thx. Comedy Nerd77 (talk) 10:49, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Comedy Nerd77: Hi, and welcome. In that case, you would forward the response (preferably with full Internet headers) via VRT with a carbon copy to that someone and mentioning the file URL to be in the loop. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:21, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry - I didn't get an email to notify me of your response(!). Just to be clear - are you saying it needs to be an email from a Management Company or similar? Thank you. Comedy Nerd77 (talk) 10:34, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
Uploaded new version unsucessful
Hi, I decided to add unblurred higher quality images to a screenshot I uploaded last year.
The Talhenbont Hall floor plan file I added last year has been replaced, but is still showing up as the current image as it's blurred and doesn't zoom in well. I first added a better screenshot of a book, however the image was still blurred. I then unblurred the image, but when I uploaded the new image, it still didn't upload correctly, so I reverted twice without success, and added a new file again, but still the latest uploaded image is of the first original upload of low quality which does not zoom correctly. Any idea please as to why the current image isn't uploaded correctly and is still using the original upload ? Please take a look at this similar image which I uploaded successfully as a newly unblurred upgraded image. Whilst a third image also has the same issue of not fully uploading the newer unblurred screenshot. You just have to compare image sizes, now over 1mb compared to before to see the uploads were successful, just they are not being displayed correctly. Any ideas how to fix this issue please ?? Cltjames (talk) 01:54, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- Not to worry, please ignore the question. It took about a week for the upload to update, now the image uploaded is represented by the latest version in better quality and without blur. Cltjames (talk) 22:02, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
