Fandom Copyright Questions
I'm looking to upload an image to the page of w:Gege Akutami, and I found one at his fandom page. I was just wondering if the copyright guidelines of Fandom are the same as Commons', and I could put this image on his Wikipedia page.
Many thanks, Frostcrush Valari (talk) 15:09, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- At https://jujutsu-kaisen.fandom.com/wiki/Gege_Akutami?file=Gege_Akutami.png, if you hover over "Gege Akutami" it says the file is fair use, so we cannot have it on Commons. The English Wikipedia might accept it on a "fair use" basis. - Jmabel ! talk 17:08, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks for the help :)

Attendo vostre, grazie Giuseppe Flace (talk) 20:06, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Jmabel ! talk 22:39, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Uploading map published in 1853 (outside of the United States)
Hello. A work from 1853 must be in the public domain in the USA and elsewhere, I have no doubt about it. But I'm selecting "Author has been deceased for more than 70 years" as option for PD, because no other matches the case, although I don't know the exact date of death of the map's authors (the map being published more than 170 years ago, we can be sure that they passed away more than 70 years ago). Please tell me if there's some more precise PD template that I could use. I miss an option like the "First published in the United States before 1929" one, but for works published outside of the United States (with whatever year is needed). Thanks. MGeog2022 (talk) 13:36, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- @MGeog2022: Template:PD-US-expired states the PD status in the U.S. and it can be used for all such works, irrespective of the country of publication. For any additional template, you did not tell what country. You can use the specific template for that country, if there is one, or Template:PD-old-70 or Template:PD-old-assumed, if applicable to that country. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:56, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I hadn't said it: the map was published in Spain. Yes, I used "Template:PD-old-70" (it's automatically used when selecting "Author has been deceased for more than 70 years" option). For this case it should be OK, because it's extremely unlikely (not to say impossible) that authors of a 1853 work were alive in 1954. But for works from, let's say, 1910, that wouldn't be the same. For works such as maps, it can be really difficult to know the author's death date. For US works, the 1929 date makes this very easy, but for works from other countries, it can be really confusing (perhaps a template for Spain does exist, but it isn't easy to find, and the upload wizard doesn't offer an option for that). I would appreciate any information in this regard, not so much for this 1853 map, where there is no need for it, but for other possible future uploads. MGeog2022 (talk) 14:11, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- For a summary of rules and a list of possible templates for a country, you can consult pages such as Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Spain (or, for other countries, other subpages of Commons:Copyright rules by territory). For Spain, note the precision about 80 years. So, on Commons, the two templates for your map are likely Template:PD-US-expired + Template:PD-old-80. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:42, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- OK, I'll use both of them, since it seems that for older works from Spain it's 80 years after death, and not 70 (again, 1944, for a 1853 work, whose autors would have been born in 1833 or earlier, I think that we could take it for granted). But I am amazed that, unlike for the United States, there is no limit by publication date, this leaves out works from around 1900, when you don't know the author's death date. In any case, thank you very much for your help. MGeog2022 (talk) 15:01, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- If author is unknown and there is no specific provision giving a shorter term, most countries consider 120 years after publication a safe bet, as do we for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel, thanks, that's a good reference to know what works are safe to upload (it would be fine to have that option on Upload Wizard; this would have been a good proposal for the Technical Needs Survey, if it had not already been completed). In this case author isn't unknown, but authors aren't notable enough to easily know their death dates (maybe with proper research work they could be known, or maybe not). MGeog2022 (talk) 18:41, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that death date thing is tricky when relatively obscure people are at issue. - Jmabel ! talk 21:59, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

How to proceed with a picture
Hello!I have found a picture which i want to use for a wiki page but i've ran into multiple issues regarding its possible uploading on Wikimedia Commons.
Firstly, the picture is around 12 years old, which itself isn't an issue. The issue arises that, after a reverse image search, this image only shows up on two french forums from the early 2010s. Neither of these forums have any mentions of an author, copyright, origins- not even a date. And, again, the only two instances where i was able to find this exact picture were just on that discussion page. How should i proceed here? It is also safe to assume the forum has been long dead since it hasn't been updated since 2012-ish.
Thank you! YoursTrulyKor (talk) 23:59, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- If it helps, it related to Ourasi (the race horse) which might explain why it is on two random french forums. And no, the other forum doesn't mention a photograph/author either- it was the same discussion hosted on a different server (an archive for the forums from what i was able to tell)
YoursTrulyKor (talk) 00:02, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- There's no way to use that picture, because it's still copyrighted and we cannot contact the author. We have some pictures of that horse in Category:Ourasi, though. --rimshottalk 02:16, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- I did a bit more of digging and i was able to find a source, it belongs to AFP (Agence France-Presse), now im wondering- how do i identify other details like the type of Copyright? Thanks! YoursTrulyKor (talk) 14:28, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- See Commons:Copyright rules by territory/France. If the photographer is known, the copyright will be protected for 70 years after they die. If the photographer isn't known, the copyright will be protected for 70 years following publication. If the image is 12 years old, that means it will be protected by copyright until at least 2082 (or longer if the photographer is known and they were still alive after 2012). It is possible that AFP (or the photographer if they were a freelancer and retained copyright themselves) may choose to release the image under a free licence but it is highly unlikely. Press agencies like AFP make their money by selling the rights to use their images and releasing images under a free licence will hurt their profits. From Hill To Shore (talk) 15:10, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! Now i got another question. If i were to take a public recording of a race in which Ourasi participated in the 80s, stop at a certain frame, screenshot it and then crop it and maybe slightly restore it- would it that be considered copyrighted or an own creation? Thanks YoursTrulyKor (talk) 18:25, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

- Ok so i was able to find out that these footages were captured by ina.fr
- Maybe im making a mistake but i will continue researching into this. YoursTrulyKor (talk) 01:23, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- so i've read through ina.fr terms of use (Here) and theres a section which peaked my attention which reads the following:
- "Le Site permet à l’Utilisateur, librement et gratuitement de :
- -consulter les Contenus du Site, et notamment les Contributions publiées;
- -partager les Contributions sur les réseaux sociaux"
- Which roughfully translates to:
- "The Site allows the User, freely and free of charge, to:
- - consult the Content of the Site, and in particular the published Contributions;
- - share the Contributions on social networks"
- Contributions is also defined on the website as:
- "Contribution(s)”: designates all Article(s), Reading Note(s), video modules, Statistics(s), created by an Author and distributed on the Site;"
- So it states that all videos, images, notes, statistics, etc. which are present on the site are free to user and share anywhere on the internet.
- So what does that mean? Is it a good sign? YoursTrulyKor (talk) 01:35, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

For those of us who have the patroller status (and above), we can mark things as patrolled, meaning they have been checked for vandalism and the like. Abzeronow (talk) 19:47, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

- @Hpage66: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and uploading them with full documentation as .ogg files. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:38, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

Justin and I meant for you to click on the blue links. non-botlike edits are edits that require individual thought by a human (rather than edits done by robotic means). I am reaching out to ask what copyright should be attributed to this? Here is the thing, there was a scanned copy of this uploaded and deleted due to no copyright, although I do not see a copyright on the certificate. Anyone could obtain this copy if they go and purchase Wagyu beef. I do not see a need for a copyright, however since it was deleted I do not want it deleted again. The image was just like this one:

WWI aircraft images
I would like to upload scanned WWI aircraft images from a 1946 British book, it is original (not a reprint) and has no copyright notices. The images themselves are mostly credited to aircraft manufacturers and dated 1914-1918, all taken over 100 years ago. I believe that the book and images are public domain but am struggling to find the correct licensing template for this situation. Just need steering in the right direction, thanks. Nimbus227 (talk) 17:53, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- You can use {{PD-UK-unknown}} if the author is unknown. Ruslik (talk) 18:55, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- The authors are known (Owen G Thetford and E.J Riding) but I can't find any death dates (for the 70 year rule). I have read in one of the licensing sections here that old books with no copyright notices are not protected which seems to make sense. Nimbus227 (talk) 19:53, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- In cases where the author is known but the death date is not known, we'd have to wait 120 years after the creation of the photograph so it could be uploaded in 2039 (sooner if the year of creation is known to be before 1918). Abzeronow (talk) 20:17, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Nimbus227: I believe you may be referring to "Aircraft of the 1914-1918 War. Compiled by O.G. Thetford and E.J. Riding. Managing editor: D.A. Russe." The first contributor is almost certainly Owen Gordon Thetford (1923-1996). UK copyright on the work will last until at least 2066 (assuming the other contributors died earlier). However, the book is described as "compiled by," which suggests Thetford and Riding didn't take the photos. Does the book give any indication that other people may have taken the photographs? If so (and they aren't named) then {{PD-UK-unknown}} may apply to the photographs. However, if they were first published in 1946, the US copyright would have been restored in 1996 and won't expire until 2041. Unless you can find an earlier publication, it is unlikely that you will be able to upload these images for quite some time. From Hill To Shore (talk) 20:42, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, right title, there's no mention of D.A Russe that I can see. Majority of images are credited to the Imperial War Museum with others credited to the manufacturing companies (Sopwith, Westland etc). It looks like I will have to upload the needed images as non-free on Wikipedia. Nimbus227 (talk) 20:52, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- The archive entry I found had the name cut off. Apparently it was edited by D. A. Russell,[1] the managing editor of "Aeromodeller." We also have a Wikidata entry for Owen Thetford (Q112564888). Ping me when you upload the images to Wikipedia; I'll be happy to look over them to see if we can craft a justification for them PD, or at least help establish when they are likely to become PD. Updating a logo
I'm trying to update a logo for a non-profit organization that went through a rebrand last June. How do I do this? When uploading a file it says it can't be a logo, but the logo on the page currently is inaccurate. Froggheadd (talk) 16:03, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Froggheadd, what you describe is from the start (how you seem to have planned it) not compatible with the way things work here. The old logo was once the right logo, right? (at least that seems to be the case from your text). The way things work here on Commons: If there is a new logo you want to upload, fine. Then make a completely new file with the file name (just a proposal): "Organization XYZ, Logo since Dec. 2023.jpg". The old logo site and file stays exactly as is, but you might e.g. add to that description text "old logo until 2023, replaced since ..." or the like. Pittigrilli (talk) 16:28, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- PS: If you want to make it perfect, you might afterwards the above initiate the renaming of the original (old) file name to have the addition "old logo until 2023" or so. But this is kind of an extra, and I would recommed that if you want to do that, you come back here and just ask for it. Pittigrilli (talk) 19:20, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Pittigrill: , Froggheadd doesn't say he was trying to overwrite, so I wouldn't presume that. The "can't be a logo" is more likely a warning in an upload tool, because most logos are copyrighted. We've been having a lot of back-and-forth with developers who've been much too inclined to try to filter out possibly infringing material early, without understanding that false negatives are just as much problem as false positives.
- @Froggheadd: If the log is simple enough to be below the threshold of originality in its originating country, you can upload it to Commons under a new filename, then use {{PD-textlogo}} in lieu of a license. (Depending on what upload tool you are using, you might have to edit after uploading to get that in there.) Then switch the relevant Wikipedia article over to use the new logo.
- If the logo is above the TOO, then the only way you can upload to Commons is if the company (or other copyright-holder) is willing to go through the COM:VRT process and offer a specific free license for the logo.

- Really not sure. These wordings are all in motion at the moment. At Commons talk:WMF support for Commons/Upload Wizard Improvements I (and others) have been trying to impress upon the developers that the goal is not to minimize the number of "bad" uploads (in terms of copyright/licensing/scope), the goal is to minimize the sum of "bad" uploads that are accepted and "good" uploads that are not. - Jmabel ! talk 12:49, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

- @Froggheadd: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:02, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
Blocked upload: new user + pdf file
I'm an employee of the Wikimedia Foundation and I'm trying to upload a copy of the Foundation's public comments in a regulatory proceeding to Commons. However, my upload was blocked by a bot because I'm a new user trying to upload a pdf. Page deleted: Actuaries Institute - how can we represent this actuarial body?
Hi there,
I noticed that there's no page for the Actuaries Institute (actuarial body of Australia and globally for actuaries). I noticed all the other worldwide actuarial associations have one, but this one has been deleted due to unambiguous advertising or promotion and unambigous copyright infringement from their website in 2021.
I've reached out to the user who deleted the page to request it be reinstated (providing I edit it without any promotional tone, material and it being properly sourced). However, I'd love some guidance.
Is the page able to be restored, so I can edit it within the guidelines? Or, could I create a new page for Actuaries Institute, and it can be redirected from the old one? Could you please advise me of the right way forward?
Thank you! EricaSatur (talk) 05:59, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

rural economy is lucking research in concerned sectors
rural economy is dominated by activities including but not limitted to Agriculture, rearing animals, mining(in some parts) and handcrafts. the agriculture is the one that is practiced at large scale. however, the production is highly subsistence due to the fact that research was not carried out to inform policy makers and implementers at local level. the question is for how long and in what way rural economy will be self sustaining? Photographs from the IWM archive
The Imperial War Museum publishes historic photographs online and allows them to be downloaded on a non-commercial licence, the terms of which are here. Is this the "Non-Commercial Government Licence", which Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom says is incompatible with Wikimedia Commons? I would like to copy and upload to Commons two photographs in the IWM archive that a German official photographer took in 1918, and which the IWM copied from the Reichs-Marine-Sammlung.
Can the IWM impose its own copyright restrictions on German official photographs that were taken 106 years ago? Or should German law be applied to decide whether they can be uploaded to Commons? The two photographs in which I am interested are Q 51036 and Q 53081. Thankyou, Motacilla (talk) 10:14, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- I have no idea how IWM can possibly claim to own copyright on those photographs: how would the copyright from official German photos have made its way to them? They might not be PD, though. Imagine if they were taken by someone 25 years old at the time. They would only have been 61 in 1954, so they could easily have lived that long, and if they did then their heirs would still own a copyright. I believe that under German law (which Commons would defer to here) if the images were truly anonymous they would long since have lost copyright, but it is possible that there is a known author more specific than "German official photographer", and the IWM just doesn't happen to know who took them. - Jmabel ! talk 17:03, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thankyou Jmabel: your thoughts are similar to mine. Frankly, the UK may have looted the photos from a German archive. However, we do not know which "German official photographer(s)" took these two photographs, and she/he/they could easily have lived until 1954 or later.
- I tried a reverse image search to see if any German online archive offers the same two photos under more helpful copyright terms. I found no such archive. What I found instead was Alamy trying to pass off a sepia version of Q 51036 as their own, and charge £15 for a licence to use it!
- I am no lawyer. I feel out of my depth in copyright matters. Is "German official photographer" a legal entity in German law? If a photograph is thus attributed, does it in a sense cease to be the work of the actual human who took the photograph, and become the work of the German state? Motacilla (talk) 19:58, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Spoils of war are not "looted". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:28, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- The Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archive) has one of them, see [2], but they don't name a photographer as well ("o. Ang.", "ohne Angabe", not indicated), and it's also not the among the Bundesarchiv images that were uploaded here under a free license in 2008. The way German copyright works, even if these were photographs taken by official military photographers, they are not automatically in the public domain (like in the US on the federal level) or under some kind of Crown Copyright (like in the UK), but protected 70 years pma, for the lifetime of the photographer and then an additional 70 years; they're also not "anonymous" if the name of the photographer became known somewhere. So without further details about photographer, first publication etc., those would be ok for Wikimedia Commons only after 120 years (with {{PD-old-assumed}}); in 2039 in this case. They're old enough for local upload to en.wp though (from before 1929), and de.wp would also accept them as local uploads since they are older than 100 years. --Rosenzweig τ 13:38, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the IWM have a long and ignoble record of making bogus claims of copyright in reproductions of works that are out-of-copyright (aka Copyfraud), so we usually need to ignore what they say and make a judgement based on the facts of each individual case. Getting a press pass
Hi. I live in Iceland and recently there has been a lot of volcano activity in Reykjanes. During the eruptions only press is allowed in. I would love to be able to get great photos during the next eruption. Steinninn ♨ 05:19, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- The rules are very country specific and therefore there is no process on Commons for this. Normally you would ask your local chapter but Iceland does not have one. I think the only way would be to explain what you do yourself and hope that they accept this. GPSLeo (talk) 06:56, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

- If you are talking about File:LDV MAXUS.jpg, it's been on Commons too long for speedy deletion. You'd need to list a deletion request for it, including a reason for deletion. It is currently in use in multiple projects and has been on Commons for more than 10 years - in such cases, the uploader asking many years later is not generally considered a reason to delete without a specific explanation of why it needs to be deleted. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:33, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Photo of ancestor
I have a photo of George McDermot, taken in about 1900, that was sent to me by the Paulist order in New York, where he was a priest. I would like to use the photo on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_McDermot, which I created. When asked (by George McDermot's great-great nephew) for any information they had about him, the Paulists just sent the photo and said he could have it. Is this sufficient for copyright purposes, and if so what licence is appropriate?
Many thanks in advance. I have tried to find a similar case in the FAQ for image uploading, but cannot see one.

- You say it is from "about 1900". There are certain circumstances under which a U.S. photo from that date could still be copyrighted, but it would be unusual. If it's from before 1904 and has never been published, or if it was first published in 2003 or later, then {{PD-US-unpublished}} works. If it was published in 1928 or earlier, {{PD-US-expired}} works. If it was first published in between those dates (1929-2002, inclusive) things can get trickier, and it just might still be copyrighted. Do you know which of these cases applies? - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick reply. - Any publication in 2003 or later is not a problem, because starting then publication of old unpublished works did not extend their U.S. copyright, so you can use .{{PD-US-unpublished}} if it is from before 1904 (120 years). - Jmabel ! talk 21:33, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a SVG with an embedded public domain true type font, that I made myself???
So, I’ve been working on the image referenced in this post Commons talk:Overwriting existing files/Requests#c-Asclepias-20240224141300-Linux dr-20240224000500 which ended up here:
File:English pattern playing cards deck PLUS CC0.svg
and realized the text really SHOULD be embedded so it can be edited/translated/searched, etc. and went through a week long escapade creating a font, realizing SVG Fonts are obsolete, converting to TTF, figuring out how to embed that in an SVG, and use it within InkScape… replaced all path text with text objects (or clones there of) so it’s “easy” to edit or translate… it was such a pain in the butt that I wrote a monster change log message to upload the file:
TL;DR: This should be visually identical to previous versions, but changed “SVG Path text” to “Embedded SVG text objects” and embedded all characters used into a custom (still CC0) embedded TrueTypeFont
This turned out to be a ‘much more ambitious’ change than I realized. Rest assured, the rendered artwork should be indistinguishable from the original. I was combing through the MetaData trying to finalize it and realized that all the included characters were “SVG Path text”, and I noticed Inkscape included a “SVG Font Editor” tool (that I didn’t realize was obsolete. (Excluding suites that I hadn’t considered yet), the file included 10 digits, AJQK for Ace, Jack, Queen and King, plus OER to complete the word “Joker”… Realizing any font without a complete latin alphabet would be useless I added the remaining 19 capital letters for a total of 36 characters. Then I realized that SVG fonts had been removed from the SVG 2.0 candidate spec in 2016 and were legacy in the few places they were supported. Making a long story… umm less long, I used FontForge to convert these to TrueType Fonts, I also decided to add the 4 card suite characters for use ‘all over’ the cards. (I contemplated, and after research, dismissed the idea of including Tarrot card suit symbols also.) This gave me a font with 40 real characters, space, and a “unmatched character” I was able to manually include this into the SVG file with a text editor but Inkscape was unable to use it. So I installed it into the system as a font, but with the limited character set Inkscape still refused to let me use it. To allow me to edit the image in Inkscape, I took another public domain font (Tuffy @ Fonts 4 Free) and grafted in my 40 characters after scaling the font accordingly. This finally allowed me to edit the SVG file in InkScape with the 21 of my 40 custom characters I was using. I finally then propagated all the path text characters in the image and to text objects (or clones of text objects, then integrated them into each card one by one. After all this, I went back in with my text editor and included my 40 character TTF font in a <style> tag as a base64 binary blob, and replaced all references to “Tuffy” with my custom font name: “Cc0PlayingCardTypeStaresque”… TypeStarEsque is a reference to the closest font I found with WhatTheFont which was called FF TypeStar. It’s significantly different, so I’m sure there is not copyright violation, but it’s close enough that “TypeStarEsque” seemed at least descriptive. I haven’t finished updating all the metadata yet, but now I can claim, accurately that all text characters are embedded text that can be edited for localization purposes, and since the custom font is included, it should render the same everywhere. The vertical text rendering of “JOKER” I wanted to include as a font setting, but it turns out that vertical text isn’t officially supported in SVG until SVG 2.0 that has yet to be ratified, so I just used a multiline string with newline chars between each line (less cool, maybe, but more universally compatible.)
If you actually read this far, you must be a masochist like me.
I uploaded the file and get these errors:
If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding.

- Since there I tried posting the TrueTypeFont by itself on Wikimedia Commons, that for some reason doesn't support TTF files... so then I tried to get the font hosted externally, and posted it here: https://www.fontspace.com/get/family/jd83w, and had my newest version of the SVG file reference the external URL, and got the same error. (that was a bit of a long shot.) any other ideas? Linux dr (talk) 01:58, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- In SVG on Commons (or any WMF project) you can only use Fonts (ttf or other format) that are installed in the MW software as webfonts. The number of webfonts of MW is very limited, they are basically only there to ensure that every Unicode codepoint can be displayed on any device that is used to display MW pages. Therefore it is unlikely, that another font will be added. But you can try to lobby for your font to be added to the available webfonts of MW. For first is needs to be free and for second it will need to offer a benefit in providing WMF's mission to bring free knowledge and education to all the world. I do not know is there is a process for adding webfonts, but probably you would start a feature request at Phab:. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 09:42, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- If this is the case, this is simply my misunderstanding WMF’s attitude/policy toward fonts, [edit: and/or path text ] etc… The only thing “special” about the font in question, is that it came from the SVG image I was working on. (Imagine extracting the font from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campbell's_Soup_Cans to reconstruct it as a “searchable” SVG with the original font.) Perhaps a standard annotation for pointing out path text already in an image would make more sense. I remember seeing a recommendation somewhere that “path text” be accompanied by embedded text that is 100% transparent. Has this been standardized anywhere? Would this make more sense? Thanks again for your quick response. Linux dr (talk) 19:44, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a photo
It's very similar to this photo. It's a buidling that shows a South Korean branch of a Japanese Shinto-based new religion on the 3rd floor. Unlike the previously-mentioned image, my photo doesn't have any faces of people and license plants of automobiles, but there are phone numbers of businesses. Is it still OK to upload this image? Komitsuki (talk) 13:49, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- And also there are tiny logos for businesses in the photo. So, I don't think the photo I took would be Creative Commons when it comes to the license. Komitsuki (talk) 13:59, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- Without seeing the photo, really all anyone can say is "probably OK". If the logos are de minimis, it will be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 17:27, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

- I don't see anything about the image that is at all obviously inappropriate for Wikimedia Commons. I really don't see what you are concerned about. I could just barely imagine the rightmost sign being a possible issue, but it seems to me to be de mininis. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

GENDER SYMBOLS
There is a male symbol as well as a neutered male symbol available in ASCII characters. there is also a female symbol, but i cannot find a neutered female symbol. The female symbol is a circle mounted on a cross. I am trying to find a suitable NEUTERED FEMALE symbol for use in veterinary records. I imagine this might have a cross in the circle or a second line through the cross below the circle (rather like the neutered male symbol). Does anyone have any idea where i can find (or make) this combination, ideally as an asciii symbol. Tim Harris <redacted> 24.114.81.197 13:53, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- I am not aware of a single Gender Symbol in ASCII. There are however many Gender Symbols in Unicode (and I do not know, why you would use ASCII instead of Unicode?). You will find selections of Gender Symbols at https://nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Gender_symbols or at https://unicode.org/charts/nameslist/n_2600.html. You will find more at the Unicode site. However you should only use symbols from Unicode (and not from the private use areas of Unicode) for best interoperability. You can create more Gender Symbols with the Unicode combining marks, that allow to combine two or more Unicode codepoints into a single Glyph. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 14:58, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- I regret I am no expert on the subject, but just sharing my general knowledge and brief research. I’ve been a life-long dog owner, and never heard of a “neutered female”. The term I always heard was “spaid female”. A brief amount of research turned up
- that many vets tattoo spaid/neutered dogs and cats. Traditionally this is supposedly a green or blue line at or near the incision site, and is most common when the surgery is performed in shelters. Its most noted benefit is to prevent the need for later exploratory surgeries. I have seen photos of some dogs tattooed with more elaborate spay or neuter symbol which is (based on the photos) the male or female symbol “struck through” the middle of the circles, and perpendicular to the arrow or plus in males or females. I have no idea WHY such elaborate tattoos were created, but they sound like they may be the symbology you’re looking for.

Are religious symbols/logos copyrighted?
Apologies for this ridiculous question. Just asking a question about this because I uploaded a photo with the symbol/logo of a Japanese religious establishment, Zenrinkyo, in a very tiny part of it. It looks like a Christian cross surrounded by a flower. I have extra photos for the plaques of the symbol/logo and I want to upload them if they are permitted. Because it's difficult for me to search for the answer, what is Wikimedia Commons' policy on photos that have religious logos/symbol? Komitsuki (talk) 15:52, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'm a little bit concerned as I imposed the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication to that photo. Komitsuki (talk) 16:24, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Komitsuki: it's de minimis in the photograph so it's fine. To answer your larger question, yes, religious logos and symbols can be copyrighted, but they would have to be above the threshold of originality in the country of origin to be copyrightable. Abzeronow (talk) 17:24, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
Proper use of images of executives
I'm looking to add headshots/images for different companies. Doing so seems like a good way to enhance different pages.
That said, I'd like clarity on proper usage. Take Satya Nadella's page, for instance. The image appears to be from a professional photographer, but it's listed under a Creative Commons license (CC BY-SA 4.0). How can you be sure you have permission? Was this given in a way that isn't obvious to anyone but this inside Wikipedia?
On a related note, if you were able to take an image from a firm's site and source it to that site in a clear, obvious way, would that be OK?

More clarification on image use
Here's a better example of what's prompting me to ask these questions.
I looked at the page for the CEO of Reddit, Steve Huffman. It has an image and the sourcing is clear. It takes you to a flickr account. But how is permission established? It has a CC label, but where does it say that on the flickr site?
If you find an image on a site that makes the source obvious and then use it - taking the image of Ford CEO Jim Farley from the company site, and clearly marking the source as Ford, for instance - does that work?
https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/people/james-d--farley--jr-.html#
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Huffman KjOKheyhey (talk) 18:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- @KjOKheyhey On the Flickr page for the file, https://flickr.com/photos/74711243@N06/38232183112, there's a link below the picture on the right-hand side that says "Some rights reserved". That's a link to the CC BY 2.0 licence and is what marks the picture as having been released under that licence. You might find Commons:Where is the license on various sites? useful. Your Ford example doesn't seem to have a free licence, so wouldn't be acceptable on Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 20:39, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
Broken link to National Park Service File - Can I upload a copy to Wikimedia Commons?
aANew York State hosted online a 30 page PDF copy of an OMB 1024-0018 NPS (National Park Service) form documenting a historic church in Saratoga County that was linked by the Wikipedia article on the church stood. 9 photos included in the PDF are also linked. The old links to a New York State website no longer function and the document isn't found on the Wayback machine. Searching I found a reference to the document the National Park Service website as "The PDF file for this National Register record has not yet been digitized.". I downloaded a copy of the PDF from the NY webpages prior to it the link being broken. The church was torn down not long after being put on the register of historic places. The PDF has 9 photos documenting the structure.

Can't upload a new version of an svg file
I made my own modifications to File:Emblem of Yemen.svg, and I just can't proceed,
- It prompts me that "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." I modified the file myself.

Uploading photos which appear as rotated
I'm in the process of uploading more than 20 images, scanned from negatives, and a few of them have uploaded rotated (either upside down, or rotated through 90 degrees). Can I fix this at this stage (without having to re-enter all of the descriptions) or should I delete the rotated ones and try to upload them later? Ginigee (talk) 21:05, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Ginigee: Once you've finished uploading them, there's an option on each file's page (under the list of versions of the file) to "Upload a new version of this file". You can use that to overwrite the file while keeping the description intact. Commons has recently instituted some restrictions on overwriting files, but I don;'t think there's any problem with overwriting files you've uploaded yourself. --bjh21 (talk) 21:31, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Gingee: but better than that, if it's just a matter of rotation, tag them with {{Rotate}} (using the appropriate number of degrees, e.g. {{rotate|90}}) and a bot will deal with that. - Jmabel ! talk 10:47, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

User created "gallery" of ogg files
Would somebody be willing to look at a "gallery" of ogg files and see if Commons would like to host it? On other wikis I create a page by doing a search and hitting the return button. My guess is that on Commons we write the page in userspace and request a page move. That is fine with me, but I am currently writing a "gallery" of ogg files, and don't know if I should write it for Commons, Wikipedia, or Wikiversity. Where it should go depends in how I write it (especially because Wikiversity and Wikipedia have different template structures.) The gallery is a full performance of Mozart's Magic Flute. To my (questionable) ear, the performance ogg file seem pretty good. A version of the "gallery" is under construction at w:User:Guy vandegrift/sandbox/sandbox. Guy vandegrift (talk) 17:55, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- BTW, there is a reasonable chance this gallery would get visits. I make lots of image files, but over 50 have been placed on wikis other that Wikiversity. See v:User:Guy vandegrift/Images on other wikis--Guy vandegrift (talk) 18:51, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- Galleries here go in the main space. Die Zauberflöte would be an appropriate location, and put it in Category:Die Zauberflöte. If someone also wanted to add appropriate images, all the better. - Jmabel ! talk 20:31, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Actress Mia Marvin
Miss Marvin's Wikipedia entry has no photo of her and there are none available exhaustively searching the Internet. Is there a way to get authorization from the owner the film "The Public Enemy" by Warner Bros. 1931 (ranked #8 on AFI's top 10 gangster films) to use a screenshot from the movie? I successfully had her added to the IMDB database some years back to be included as an uncredited actor in the film. It seems disrespectful of her brief film legacy to not acknowledge and honor what she looked like. TomDiRensselaer (talk) 18:25, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
- @TomDiRensselaer: You can try asking the rights owner, if you can figure out who they are. But for the article on the English-language Wikipedia, en:WP:FAIRUSE may be a more practical solution. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:01, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
File Requested correction
I found a picture file in the Category:Images requiring perspective correction
(1956_Fiat_Multipla_Minivan_-_Deutsches_Museum_Verkehrszentrum_München)
I corrected the file the best I could using Gimp. What am I supposed to do with the corrected file? I tried overwriting the original file. It didn't work. I got an error message saying I was not the creator of the file and so could not overwrite it. Lars A (talk) 11:34, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Lars A: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/290. The proposal to "Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights" was accepted with many supports and one weak oppose 15:19, 23 September 2023 (UTC). After an implementation problem in phab:T345896 and testing, Special:AbuseFilter/290 went live with the Disallow action 09:35, 28 October 2023 (UTC). Please read MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-file-overwriting. You may request COM:AP at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:30, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Experienced editor
Hello
I'm trying to translate a page to another language, but I have to create another language first. I can create a language and translate it but I can't press OK to continue. When I press OK I get an error message that I am not an experienced editor.
My question now is: How do you become an experienced editor so you can publish the translations?
Thanks in advance, I look forward to an answer. Ben Kenens Promocioeconomicalajonquera (talk) 09:00, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Promocioeconomicalajonquera: Could you please be more specific than "a page" and "another language"? And certainly you don't mean "create a language" (I think you mean create a page in a language, but I'm not sure). I suspect the "my question now" question is based on a misunderstanding. If you say what page you are trying to translate into what language, someone can probably help you get started. - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
PDF/Vorschau JPG-Auflösung
Hallo,
Es geht um folgende Datei: file:Список дворян Киевской губернии, 1906 г.pdf. Danke für jede Hilfe. Angel Miklashevsky (talk) 15:58, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 12:39, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- @C.Suthorn Hey, danke für Deine Antwort! Das klingt plausibel; daran wird es liegen. Danke! :) Liglioto (talk) 09:06, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

Can I upload a photo to be used on wikipedia and require that all uses provide a photo credit? Eyetosee (talk) 17:17, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Eyetosee: Meaning you want to be explicitly credited in Wikipedia, rather than just having the photo link to the file page? If so, no. - Jmabel ! talk 17:27, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, a CC-by-sa licence would do that. See COMMONS:LICENSING and https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
- However do you mean 'a photo credit' broadly, or (as Jmabel describes) a credit on the Wikipedia page ? In which case, no. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:55, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. I mean, whenever or where ever the image gets used a credit is given. Eyetosee (talk) 22:23, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Again: no, it is not possible to require that an actual written credit be given on the pages where it is used, and in particular this will not happen in Wikipedia.
- If you license with {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} then that requires that to conform there must be a credit in some form, but for online use it is permitted to have a situation where the user has to click on the picture to see the credit (and that is what will be done in Wikipedia). If that is not acceptable to you, then please do not upload your files to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 10:22, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

How to upload images to wiki
With Respect: How do I move uncategorized Wikipedia Commons files https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Alan_E._Freedman? The uncategorized files are https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1923_Fox_Folks_Lab_History_1.jpg through https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1923_Fox_Folks_Lab_History_20.jpg. I uploaded both the uncategorized files as well as the categorized ones and clearly did not do so properly. Please help. Regards, Mbarrach Mbarrach (talk) 20:14, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mbarrach: Convenience links (please use internal links, which work correctly for both PC and mobile/tablet, and which will show in red if the page in question does not exist; in edit mode, note the colon after the initial square brackets, which says I am mentioning the category of file, not applying the category to the present page, or displaying the file on the present page): Category:Alan E. Freedman, File:1923 Fox Folks Lab History 1.jpg, File:1923 Fox Folks Lab History 20.jpg.
- I am not sure I understand your question. You seem to be asking how to put all 20 of these pages in Category:Alan E. Freedman, which seems an odd thing to do. Surely if we have 20+ pages for Fox Folks it deserves a category of its own.
- Have you read Commons:Categories? If not, you should at least skim it.
- To add category "A" to an image "B" (or as a parent to a child category "B") you just edit the page for "B" and at the bottom (near other categories if they are already there) add the category (in this case [[Category:Alan E. Freedman]] if that is the category you mean to add).
- I hope that answers your question. - Jmabel ! talk 10:34, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Other deletion reasoning for image
An image that I had uploaded has been tagged for copyright. I don't think the copyright violation is valid, however after some consideration, I do think the image I had uploaded is non-educational, and is thus OOS. I believe that the image should be deleted, but not for copyright reasons. What should I do, if anything? Thanks, WhoAteMyButter (talk) 06:02, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- @WhoAteMyButter: If it's on its way to deletion anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about the grounds. Or, if it's something you uploaded in the last 7 days, you can speed things along by replacing the current rationale with {{SD|G7}}, as explained at Template:My bad upload. - Jmabel ! talk 10:38, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- @WhoAteMyButter: You can remove the coyvio tag and start a normal deletion request explaining why the file is not a copyvio and why you think it is out of scope. On the description page of the file, below the scary red copyvio tag, there is a button labeled "challenge speedy deletion". You can click it. Or alternatively, you can click the "nominate for deletion" link in the "tools" column. If the whole thing is indeed CC-BY 4.0, screen captures are probably fine. Files are automatically considered in scope if they are in use in Wikipedia. The user who nominated for copyvio the file mentioned on your talk page nominated also another file without warning you on your talk page. It's the file still in use in your draft. If you want to keep it, you must act quickly to challenge the speedy deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:08, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

All TIF files like this one have JPG previews of multiple resolutions up to the maximum pixels of the original file. The example I am using also has a JPG version as a separate file as well but it is a scaled down version.
Is it safe to assume that the largest JPG preview of the TIF file has as good or even better quality to if I convert the TIF file to JPG in a converter? StellarHalo (talk) 10:07, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

- Hey @Kolya Muratov: Pretty much anything that old is going to be public domain. There are a few very strange exceptions, mostly having to do with royal families just declaring that they own copyright in perpetuity. But if you slip up on that, nobody's gonna hold it against you. Since Friedrich Rudolf von Rothenburg seems to have lived in Germany before there was a Germany, I'm guessing you're okay. GMGtalk 11:55, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

How do I upload my family history story
I have written my family history story to share for the community to enjoy reading about life events of my family in a real community. Rick Hawkeye (talk) 13:11, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Rick Hawkeye: It almost certainly does not belong on Commons, Wikipedia, or any other WMF site. Even if your family is notable enough to merit coverage in an encyclopedia, a family history written by a family member, unless first published by a reputable publisher, would almost certainly fall foul of the policies on conflicts of interest, e.g. WP:COI.
- There are, of course, many places on the web (including a site of your own) where you could publish such a thing, but WMF projects are almost certainly not the right places. - Jmabel ! talk 17:50, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

- You can add a Wiki style biography of each family member at Familypedia (via Fandom), it was started by the same guy that started Wikipedia but pays for itself with ads. You can add deceased family members to Wikidata, and Wikidata has links to the other genealogy sites. See for example: Anton Julius Winblad where I link to his entry in Geni, Familysearch, Findagrave, and Wikitree. I copy and paste the same biography to each of the websites. Wikidata also links to Category:Anton_Julius_Winblad where we are now. You can load historical images of family members at Commons if they are in the public domain or a family member took the image and you have inherited the copyrights. You can also load historical public domain news articles to Commons and and link the names in the article to people in Wikidata. See for example: File:Patrick J. Norton (1856-1905) and John Norton (1861-1905) in a fist fight as reported in the Jersey Journal on Tuesday, May 19, 1891.png where my great-grandfather got into a drunken brawl in 1891. I transcribed the article and added it to Wikisource:Jersey_Journal/1893/Trying_to_Refresh_Conboy's_Memory and also created a Wikidata entry for the news article here: Trying to Refresh Conboy's Memory. --RAN (talk) 20:51, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
Uploading a new version of File:Wikimania - The Wikimentary.webm
Hello, Recently, I have uploaded File:Wikimania - The Wikimentary - Edited.webm, a cropped-down version of File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm. But actually, perhaps I should've just updated the latter rather than creating a new file... My project being that the former replaces the latter everywhere it is used.
The problem with File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm, as you can see if you watch the video, is that it starts over regularly to the beginning - so the visionner of the video has to speed up to where it cut off last in order to enjoy the full length. The full video, no interruption, thus begins at 25'40 . My edit aims to show only the useful length (so starting at 25'40 ) .
If I were to update directly File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm, I would edit again my own edit: right now, i repet several times that my edit shortens the original publication, and that I do not own the credit, blah, blah... Looking back, on it, it's not so necessary.
What do you think? Can I Overwrite the current video, File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm ? Thank you for your advice,

How do you create a new category?
Commons:Categories#Creating a new category says to just search for it, and when it isn't found some red lettered item will show up and to just click on it to create it. I searched for Category: 1876 paintings by Auguste Toulmouche, and all I got was a box that said
We didn't find any results Try more general terms or check your spelling
I know you didn't find it; that's why I'm trying to create it. (I deleted what I meant to include about what I think). How do I create a new category?Mabrndt (talk) 03:56, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- I usually do it one of two ways:
- 1) If there is an item I want to add to the category, just add the category to the item which creates a red link you can click on.
- 2) Edit a similiar category, and change the URL to the new category name which then opens the edit window of the new category. This has the advantage that you can easily copy & paste the content from the existing category to the new one. Windharp (talk) 09:47, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- As far as I know, 1) no longer works (at least I couldn't get/see any red link to click on). But, 2) did work and I was able to create the category. Thanks!!Mabrndt (talk) 14:33, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mabrndt: It still works, see for example Category:Graffiti_in_Landkreis_Reutlingen which has a red category between all the blue ones. Works the same with pictures, that was just the first example I found :-) Windharp (talk) 15:57, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- I guess I wasn't specific enough. I meant searching (for me anyway) didn't return anything red to click on; the next reply probably explains why.

If you mean File:Dancers from Imbonggu District, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea.jpg it appears to be marked correctly with {{Wiki Loves Folklore 2024}}, but you still need to add categories, plus a description in at least one language. Do all new uploads get checked?
If it is not routine for new uploads to be checked, can someone please look at
Whilst I am pretty sure this has a suitable creative commons licence, I am not totally certain that I have chosen the correct one – should this have a country-specific licence? ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 20:24, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- License appears to be correct. Source states cc-by-sa 4.0. Abzeronow (talk) 20:38, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- There is no single process that ensures that all new uploads are checked, but some users choose to make it a point to do this and some conditions will make it more or less likely to be visible to others. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:41, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- @ThoughtIdRetired: Free licenses, such as CC BY and CC BY-SA, are issued by the copyright owner to apply worldwide. Although CC licenses versions before version 4.0 may exist in some localized country adaptations, they apply worldwide. Therefore, free licensed works do not need an additional country-specific tag on Wikimedia Commons. On an unrelated suggestion, I think it could be useful to use the add note tool to help readers identify what is where on the image. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:20, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
PD-textlogo: Too complex, or can it be more complex?
Hello! this logo, marked as PD-textlogo, is one I feel does express plenty of originality, but I presume the law considers it public domain as "The [U.S. Copyright] Office typically refuses claims [of calligraphy]...regardless of how novel and creative the shape and form of the typeface characters may be." (Source, Section 906.4)
If it does, I wonder if the same could be said about the colored and textured logo here (better link added post-submission). I ask because Wikimedia is the only place I've seen the Jak & Daxter logo displayed in all black, having been a fan of the game since childhood. Thank you in advance for any assistance! Kaasterly (talk) 22:09, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Heads up that your second link did not render to me. This works, tho: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/logopedia/images/f/f0/Jak_and_Daxter.png Speaking as a non-lawyer, simply taking something that is public domain and adding a color gradient to it does not meet the threshold of originality in the United States. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:34, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Actually, let me revise that somewhat: there is some 3-D embossing and debossing on it, so it's more than just a gradient. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:36, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- While true that the typeface is not copyrightable, sometimes seemingly small details like the isolated elements off of the D and R (which are not part of the letters) may qualify for copyright on their own, which could be enough. I would definitely not upload the second one, as there are several additional elements. The gradient by itself is likely not enough, but there are additional elements on the letters not related to the typeface, and those could also create a copyright. Carl Lindberg (talk) 14:40, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
- I shan't upload it, then. I figured this might be the case as last year I got a logo taken down for having a logo with a monogram, stylized like a rock much in the same manner, taken down for using PD-textlogo. Thank you both for your assisstance! Kaasterly (talk) 14:45, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Mass rename, mass categorization, etc.
as I document the language toki pona, I have uploaded many images of its writing system glyphs from fonts. how may I be able to change multiple of their names at once without having to individually mark every single one for review, as well as moving them into separate categories when necessary? Juwan (talk) 19:43, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- @JnpoJuwan: the category side of this is probably the easiest: Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot. For the renaming, you might try User:Jeff G./massrename, though I'm not sure whether you have the privileges to run it. Do make sure you are completely familiar with Commons:File renaming before you do any mass renaming. Usually, we are much happier to have decent but less-than-optimal file names than to have the instability for third parties that comes from renaming longstanding files. - Jmabel ! talk 21:58, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I am aware about the guidelines for renaming, and as far as I know, these files are likely not being used by anyone but members in another wiki which I am envolved with.
- other than that, what are the privileges to run the mass rename command, and how may I prove that I should be able to use it? Juwan (talk) 12:30, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

Question about reliable sources
I am new to this and am creating my first page. Disclosure: I work for a marketing company and the page is for a client.
My question is about sources. My client is a chemical company is in a niche (they make non-CFC chemicals that batch-clean printed circuit boards, finished and remanufactured metal parts,
optics & glass, etc.) that has very little coverage from mainstream publications.
Are SEC filings acceptable? https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/944727/000095014404003239/g88125e10ksb.htm
What about industry associations? (citing only staff-written articles, not ones written by my client):
What about articles from the following industry publications (again citing only staff-written articles, not ones written by my client):

https://industrialmachinerydigest.com/
https://finishingandcoating.com/
Any advice is appreciated. TheEdstros (talk) 03:55, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
- I see almost nothing here that would have anything to do with Wikimedia Commons, which is strictly a media repository. These look like questions for the Wikipedia in the language in which you are working.
- At least for the English-language Wikipedia, I suspect you will not get the sort of answers you are hoping for. (1) Generally, if a topic has not had significant third-party coverage, it should not have an article in the English-language Wikipedia. Primary sources generally are not acceptable to establish notability, though they can be referenced for specific facts. The industry publications might make the cut as significant third-party coverage; I couldn't tell without doing a lot more reading than I'm inclined to do. (2) If you have not already closely read en:WP:COI you should. The English-language Wikipedia generally does not welcome articles written by someone with a financial interest in the subject at hand. - Jmabel ! talk 08:31, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

- I'm wondering about the status of this file, uploaded by User:TirawleyHistory. First, it is very likely that the user is a sock of User:LordRockall who has been banned on Wikipedia for abusive use of multiple accounts. Second, it is almost certainly a bogus coat of arms, created in furtherance of commercial endeavours which should not be using Wikipedia as a promotional platform, see here [5]. It's not in use anywhere on Wikipedia, although it may have appeared in the, since deleted, article Baron of Tirawley. I'd be grateful if someone could look at the status of the file. How do I even start???
Hello. I have tried to find quick information about how to start creating a map or a chart, but I don’t think I understood a lot of it. Specifically, I’m planning on creating a ‘map’ describing the spatial-temporal beliefs of the Inca, which reflect on their socio-territorial organisation, similar to this, but mixed with the quadripartite division (only map currently available) and dual (map of Cusco, where the four region separation also exists, but isn’t shown) division superposed on it (essentially the latter two, duel and quadripartite, are based on two imaginary perpendicular axis’ [in French that sounds a lot less complex…]). Where should I start with this? What format fits better with conventions? Thanks for your help. Cheers. Encyclopédisme (talk) 16:41, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

Question About Youtube's Creative Commons Licenses
I took a screenshot from a YouTube video that was labeled as having a "Creative Commons Attribution License (reuse allowed)", then I uploaded it to Wikimedia because I thought all photos within a YouTube video with that license were allowed to be uploaded here. Then the photo/file that I uploaded (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/27/Ariana_Grande_at_the_2020_Grammy_Awards_BETTER_-_Copy.png) was flagged for speedy deletion. Should I appeal the speedy deletion? Or is the photo allowed since it was sourced from a YouTube video with a correct license attached to it? Mcages20 (talk) 00:00, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mcages20: The material to which the free license issued by a youtube channel can apply is the material whose copyright is owned by that youtube channel. It cannot apply to third-party non-free material that may happen to be included in a video, possibly in fair use or for some other reason. The source of this image of A.G. included in the video is not specified. The image can be assumed to be non-free, unless its source is known to be under a free license. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

Would this photo be accepted?
I would like to upload the photo from this website to the Lake Pujon page on the English Wikipedia. Would that be accepted? I assume it is as there is no copyright on the page because it seems to be based in North Korea, where the fair use laws are a lot fairer and cover almost anything (i.e. their concept of copyright is completely different from the western world's). What do you think? Nar 2608 (talk) 07:57, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Here the copyright laws of North Korea. They are pretty fair and have a FoP, but they also have a copyright for photographs of 50 years. On commons fair use is not welcome, but in the English Wikipedia it is. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 12:13, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

- I would not go so far as to call it "an error" or "wrong". The photographer (who is also the uploader to Commons) was, at the time, working as a communications agent in South America for the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). I suppose that it may not be surprising if at least some people, maybe in this area, or people of CIAT, at least in some contexts, may refer to this oil palm as an "oil palm". It is the one that is in this environment. Also, the template about Palm oil on Wikipedia lists both this American species and the African species. The original description of the photograph by the photographer already specified that it was in Bolivia. You judiciously added the name babassu and the scientific name Attalea speciosa in the structured caption. I added the category Attalea speciosa and some description. I think the file itself on Commons is fine. However, the important thing is: if the file is included to illustrate Wikipedia articles that are exclusively about the African oil palm, it should of course be removed from those articles. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:09, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

- @DBrownHarris: (1) My condolences on the death of your son.
- (2) This next thing is not Commons' issue, but if you are his mother you are almost certainly violating the English-language Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest by editing the article about him without declaring that.
- (3) If you have a photo of him that you took, then you own the copyright on that photo, and it should be very straightforward to use Special:UploadWizard to upload the photo to Commons. Or are you wanting to upload a photo that someone else took (more complicated)? - Jmabel ! talk 15:09, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

- @DBrownHarris You are involved with two websites with differnet rules. One is the wikipedia with an article about your son. On wikipedia it is discouraged to edit a topic you are involved with (it is a conflict of interest). Your are still allowed to edit the article about your son, if you declare the conflict of interest. The photo in the article about your son is hosted on this website, commons.wikimedia.org. On this website there can be any number of images pictureing your son and the people editing wikipedia can choose one or more of this images for inclusion in the article. However images here on commons cannot be deleted (at least not for being outdated). As commons has different rules than wikipedia, the conflict of interest does not matter here. You are entitled and absolutly invited to upload as many pictures of your son or any other person or subject, as you want. The images you upload have to abide to copyright however. Photos that you yourself took (you operated the camera) are easy: You are the owner of the copyright and you can upload the images and choose from the available licenses on commons as you like. If someone else took a photo, this person has to send an persmission to VRT. If your son took a selfie then you inherited the coprright of this photo and you can upload it, but you have to verify the permission with VRT. About editing Wikipedia: Please ask at the wikipedia site for assistence. People here at commons do not make the rules there. Deleting a photo
Hi, I need to delete a photo that I uploaded before. Currently the photo is not being used on any page. The person in the photo asked me to remove the photo from the wikipedia. I can not see any option to do so. Can someone help me ? Ahmetdogan78 (talk) 03:57, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Ahmetdogan78: Assuming we are talking about a photo on Commons, you can nominate your own photo for deletion just like anyone else's. You can indicate that it is a request for courtesy deletion, by the subject of the photo.
- But I may not have understood you correctly. You say it is not being used on any page, but they want it removed from wikipedia. If it was uploaded to one of the Wikipedias, rather than to Commons, then nothing on Commons has anything to do with the process of getting it deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 07:03, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
Category for images fading into white
Where should I categorize the following set of images fading into white?
Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 09:47, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know of a category for that, but you can put exactly this gallery as part of the description or the "other versions" for each photo involved, and/or you can create a mainspace page for this and other similar sets of photos. Normally parent categories relate to individual photos or child categories (or pages, or templates, etc.), not to collectivities. - Jmabel ! talk 10:15, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

Does Commons have a tool to correct brightness/contrast?
Believe it or not, the essential information that this image is intended to convey is on the wall under the window. It is practically invisible because the photographer failed to allow for the high contrast. Does Commons have a tool to correct this? --JMF (talk) 21:09, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- @JMF: Except for simple crops and rotations, derivative works require a download -> edit (locally) -> upload sequence.
- You are welcome to make a derivative work based on this file: download; edit with GIMP/Photoshop/etc. to change the contrast/lightness; upload, linking "other versions" using {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}}. If that's not clear, say so and someone here can flesh that out more for you.
- If you want to overwrite the original, you should typically clear it with the uploader/photographer User:Tedster007, but he seems not to be recently active, so that may not be possible. - Jmabel ! talk 22:21, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

How do I delete a picture i have uploaded? Pobesneo Maks (talk) 18:28, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Pobesneo Maks: If it is uploaded within the last week and is not being used anywhere you can just mark it with {{G7}} and it will be deleted as a courtesy; see Template:My bad upload for a bit more info on that.
- Otherwise, you can't delete it. I own a publicity still photo of Czech opera singer Helena Tattermuschova that I bought from a seller of vintage photographs. May I upload it to the biographical article on the singer? Pojohla (talk) 18:53, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Pojohla: When was it taken? Is the author known? Where was it first published? That's what we need to know to answer your question. Yann (talk) 19:52, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- The area under the photo was autographed by the singer and dated December 25, 1956, so the photo must date from before then. There are news clippings on the back side of the mounting sheet in Czech language, so it's reasonable to assume that the photograph was taken in Czechoslovakia. It was probably issued by the National Theatre of Prague, being that the singer was a company artist. Pojohla (talk) 00:26, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

- @Dagentle: Which file? What was the exact error message? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 08:34, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- "did not pass file verification" very likely was the exact error message.
- If you have exiftool or ffmpeg you can look into the metadata of the video. This metadat is likely the cause. You could try to upload a version of the video with the metadata stripped (or part thereof). Or you could try to reencode the video (for example with ffmpeg) with a higher or lower bitrate. This will likely "solve" the verification problem.
- For a real solution you would need to open a ticket at phabricator, provide extensive information and then probably wait months or years for a fix of the MW software. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 09:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- @C.Suthorn this can take long is there no other short way that can be done....or is it because of the size of the video...its 1.4GB Dagentle (talk) 10:52, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- The error message shows, that file size was not the problem. Verification starts after upload is completed. It is probably a false positive in the verfication, so changing anything in the file will likely make the file pass verification (unless it does really contain malicious code). ico format
"Wikimedia Commons does not accept filenames that end in the extension ".ico". Please convert videos to an allowed format before uploading, or reference help on other file types."
Why is Commons calling my the image i'm trying to upload a video? Trade (talk) 20:30, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- No idea about the video thing, but .ico is not an allowed file format. Where does this image come from? If you created it yourself, you should be able to save it as PNG. Otherwise I would wonder about the license. --rimshottalk 23:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Trade: I don't think that message is calling your
.ico
file a video. Rather, it's saying that if it's a video you'll need to convert it, and otherwise you'll probably need to look at the list of file types. If you have a suggestion for how to improve the message, you could put an {{Edit request}} at MediaWiki talk:Mwe-upwiz-upload-error-bad-filename-extension. The last discussion on the subject seems to have been Commons:Village pump/Technical/Archive/2023/12#Improving MP4 error message. --bjh21 (talk) 11:39, 28 March 2024 (UTC)- Just an idle disinterested bystander hoping my 2¢ will assist in understanding how the uninformed may read the message: “Please convert videos to an allowed format before uploading, or reference help on other file types.” To me this suggests that Wikimedia thinks this type of file is a video. Images can definitely be “converted” as well. I would change “videos” to “media” for clarity (covering images, videos, audio, drawings, etc.) As far as `.ico` files, specifically: to my ear this is suggestive of a platform-specific icon file and I see no good argument that this be hosted on WMF unless as part of a platform-specific bundle of some sort, like an open source OS image. That said, I personally prefer magic-number file identification, rather than assuming filename extensions are correct. That said, this is purely my personal opinion, and I am not affiliated at all with WMF. -Loren Osborn (linux_dr) (talk) 16:37, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

- Can some Admin who speaks German please reason with JuTa? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:16, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: JuTa is a former Commons bureaucrat and admin who hasn't been active on Commons or his home wiki in about two years. —RP88 (talk) 01:50, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- @StarTrekker: Could you give at least a representative sample of the categories you are talking about, so we can get a sense of this before suggesting a course of action? I don't want to presume either that you are right or wrong.
- Keep in mind that even an admin is not normally allowed to just go around deleting catogories on the basis of their individual opinion. - Jmabel ! talk 07:45, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Some examples that I have recently nominated for deletion include: Category:Alexander George Morison (given name), Category:Edward Alexander Newell (given name), Category:HMikkelsen (surname), Category:Y Goud (surname), Category:Tiesssink (surname), Category:Johan Peter Fürchtegott (given name), Category:Johan Marie Jacques Hubert (given name), Category:Johan Lindström (given name), Category:Petr Stepanovich (given name), Category:Petr Vasilyevich (given name), Category:Vasily Vasilyevich (given name). Some of these are obvious mistakes that the creator seems to have not bothered to fix, while others seem to display a complete lack of understanding of what a given name is or how patronymics work.StarTrekker (talk) 16:01, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- Got it. So you are talking categories for given names that aren't really given names. Are they empty categories? If so, you can mark them for speedy deletion as described at Template:How to delete empty categories. If not, then you'd first have to correctly recategorize their content. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- Well I guess that's what I'm going to have to do. Will be a lot of work but someone has to do it.StarTrekker (talk) 17:15, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
