Flags of Lomas and Esteban Echeverria

Hello. I was the one who put it on delete request. The Lomas flag, the svg, has a design flaw. Two stripes of the flag are missing, and it should be like so https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Bandera_de_Lomas.jpg. The Esteban Echeverria flag was not correctly vectorized hence the request. 2marco4 (talk) 11:35, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@2marco4: Hi, File:Bandera del Partido de Esteban Echeverría.svg is used on many pages. So we don't delete files used elsewhere unless there is a copyright issue. Thanks, Yann (talk) 14:21, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Talounisofia.jpg

Hi Yann, just for reference, this file was actually deleted for not having permission a few weeks ago by Fitindia. Another account (maybe the same user), then reuploaded the photo about a week later with another questionable permissions claim. The IP who asked for the file to be refunded is also probably the same user. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:31, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, The previous deleted file is not the same. But I also deleted this one, obviously not own work, and no permission. Thanks for noticing, Yann (talk) 06:16, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for File:سهند-مدمرة.jpg. Can you please check if other files deleted in that request are licensed with Template:Tasnim, Template:Fars or Template:Mehr? I suspect that many of them are free. For example File:مدمرة-سهند.jpg and File:مراحل بناء-مدمرة سهند.jpg seem to be from the same source. HeminKurdistan (talk) 09:08, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion requests

Hi. Files like File:Sandro mazzola inter.jpg and File:Sandro mazzola inter (cropped).jpg, uploaded under the PD-Italy licence, in fact were not taken on Italian territory, so they're in copyviol. Stop. I don't know how to explain it in simpler words... — danyele 15:16, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the place of publication is the key, not where it was taken. Yann (talk) 15:19, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, thanks for your (un) ping... very gentle -.-
On topic: I have been uploading images in PD-Italy for years, and this is the first time I have heard this argument about the place of publication... but let's just say that you are right - and I remain convinced that you are not -: from the information we have, how can we deduce the place of publication of that file...? By following your reasoning, now that image would still have to be deleted... — danyele 22:57, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danyele: Yes, the place of publication is what determines the copyright status everywhere, including on Commons. Being a football player from Italy, there is a reasonable expectation that this image was first published in Italy. Unless there is some evidence otherwise, we can keep it. Thanks, Yann (talk) 06:21, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"there is a reasonable expectation"... with all due respect, it seems to me (so its say in Italian) like a "mirror-climbing" -.-
At the moment there are two facts: a) the photo was not taken in Italy; b) there is no certainty that the place of publication corresponds to Italy. So, I cannot agree with your opinion. I'll go to the Italian bar to discuss this further — danyele 15:33, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have one opinion for File:Seoul with little fine dust.jpg.

Thank you for undeleting File:Seoul with little fine dust.jpg.

I wanted to paint the part of Lotte World Tower black, but it was covered with the same color as the sky as if there was none at all. (This image should be censored because there is no freedom of panorama in South Korea.)

In order to know that Lotte World Tower existed in the original place, how about displaying it in the form of an outline rather than masking it like File:Tour Montparnasse-disparue-et rue Rousselet.JPG? Ox1997cow (talk) 00:11, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ox1997cow: Hi, I think that's the best way to avoid the copyright issue, and to keep the image usable. Also I am not an expert on image editing, so it can certainly be better or different. Feel free to do it. Thanks, Yann (talk) 17:42, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Restored image

Hi, If there is no copyright in the first place, it doesn't matter if it was published or not. Yann (talk) 18:13, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yann, thanks, but where does it say that the image doesn't have copyright in the first place? If the letter claims to be an "official document" from the PMOI, wouldn't someone related to the letter or to the PMOI have a say about whether this is free to use or not? It also says that the source of the image is "Hoover Institution Archives" but the Hoover Institution link does not host the image. Ypatch (talk) 09:29, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ypatch: Did you read the DR, and the undeletion request, i.e. [1]. All these points were addressed there. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:05, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yann, I have read it, and I just read it again and I don't see it. I also asked Ellywa, and they seem to say that restoring this image was mainly your decision. Also User:Jameslwoodward[2] and User:Ankry [3][4] seemed to agree that the image could be copy-righted by the sender.
The image is dated to 1986, and the alleged sender (People's Mujahedin of Iran) have not been in Iran since 1981, so this image can't fall under under Iranian CR law. So could you please be specific? What exactly determines that the sender doesn't hold copyright over this image? Ypatch (talk) 09:39, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Query about copyright status for photos of artwork

Hi Yann, I wanted to get your opinion about the image at File:Flying Ballon Girl on the West Bank wall at Kalandia (174617912) (cropped).jpg. It looks to me like a straightforward photo of an artwork, which I'd have thought is not permitted as the artwork would be copyrighted. I get so confused by the laws on this matter though, so thought I'd check with you before wasting people's time with a deletion request! Thanks Amakuru (talk) 11:33, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

URAA and March 2012

Hi! According to Template:Not-PD-US-URAA/doc the template should only be applied to files uploaded after 1 March 2012. Do you agree with that date and why? And would it apply to files uploaded to jawiki in 2010 and moved to Commons in 2022? --MGA73 (talk) 06:35, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Nayacalevu, Nawaqanitawase and Habosi June 2022.jpg

Hi. I noticed you closed my deletion request for File:Nayacalevu, Nawaqanitawase and Habosi June 2022.jpg as keep because @Tm: said the Australian government actually created the image. According to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Australia works created by the Australian government are copyrighted until 50 years after the date of creation. So I'd appreciate it if you deleted the file anyway since it's obviously still a copyright violation if it was made by the Australian government instead of the government of Fiji. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 20:26, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, And why the license is not valid? {{DFAT}} seems to be OK here. Yann (talk) 20:31, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The answer is pretty obvious. {{DFAT}} applies to files that come from Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website, or www.dfat.gov.au. Obviously Facebook, which is where the image comes from, isn't the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website. Seriously dude, did you even check before you asked me? Because you can pretty easily look through {{DFAT}} yourself and see that none of the of the websites that are listed in it are Facebook. --Adamant1 (talk) 23:15, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Get down please. The Facebook account is of the Australian Embassy in Fiji, which is very well under the direction of the DFAT. Yann (talk) 09:07, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really sure what "get down" means, as I'm not a dog, but I'm not the only who thinks images posted to Facebook aren't covered by DFAT and your comment does nothing to show that they are. I think WikiVirusC's comment on the administrator noticeboard perfectly summarizes why DFAT doesn't extend to images posted on Facebook. I'm sure your aware as an administrator that Commons:Deletion requests says "the burden of showing that a file can be validly hosted here lies with the people who think it should be kept." You treating me like I'm a dog or whatever does nothing to satisfy that burden. --Adamant1 (talk) 15:42, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Since you decided to ignore WikiVirusC's comment and don't seem to want to delete it or otherwise resolve the issue, is there somewhere else I can make a request to have your close overturned or should I just re-nominate the file for deletion? Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:09, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. I just re-nominated it. --Adamant1 (talk) 00:42, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I saw your message that you tagged File:SCP-2747-IO-Radiohead.jpg as missing image use permissions. I am not familiar with the VRT process, so I'm not sure if I will still need to email permissions-commons regardless of what I say here. Anyways I'm messaging here to explain the evidence for why the file can be present on Commons. I've also edited the licensing information on the file to be more clear.

The image was created for the SCP Wiki, whose contents are licensed as CC-BY-SA 3.0. See its Image Use Policy, which notes the site license and clarifies it for those less familiar with licensing, in particular with regards to images (which are less likely to be original creations than submitted text). Further information (such as contact for the site's Licensing Team) is available on the Licensing Guide page. Additionally, there is a footer at the bottom of the site provided by the host, Wikidot, which notes that the site's contents are CC-BY-SA 3.0.

As noted on File:SCP-2747-IO-Radiohead.jpg, the image is a derivative. The modifier, minmin, created the derivative version for use on SCP-2747, which is listed as the source. (For the reasons mentioned above, listing the SCP Wiki as the source indicates the contents are CC unless there is a special licensing disclosure mentioning otherwise, which are rare and not present in this case.) Note you can see the licensing information on a page in the "license box" component, see the "‡ Licensing / Citation" element at the bottom of the page.

The original image is from https://www.publicdomainpictures.net/en/view-image.php?image=128915&picture=black-fractal, which is CC0. Other files on Commons accept publicdomainpictures.net as an acceptable CC0 source (for instance, File:Fish_Farm_Site.jpg), so this file should also be admissible. I uploaded the original, unmodified image as File:Black Fractal.jpg so that this file can link to it using {{Derived from}}, which should help improve the licensing documentation here.

Given this explanation, am I able to replace the {{No permission since}} with {{subst:PP}}, or how should things proceed?

Thank you. aismallard (talk) 18:32, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Aismallard: Hi,
Ok, no copyright issue then. I reviewed the license for the source, and I changed the license for this file to CC-0. There is no substantial modifications, so the license should be the same. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:14, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

All my uploads have been deleted?

Hi there, You have deleted all the files I have uploaded:

where the license has been specifically mentioned on the author's own website because the images are published under GFDL license. @SRoyy: The copyright of a book cover usually belongs to the publisher, not to the author, so it is unlikely that these licenses are valid. They should be confirmed by email with a proof of copyright ownership. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:25, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Determining copyright status of photographs taken from Government archives

Hi @Yann. I hope that you are well and fine. A user uploaded some images from the website of Darul Uloom Deoband. These photos are from 1950, with photographers being unknown. The DuD website has not explicitly stated the copyright status but has just mentioned that these are from Government Archives. Do you have any advise on this? Should the images that come from Government Archives considered PD or should we not allow them here because photographers might have lived more rendering the copyright status ambiguous. Regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:26, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with Wikipedia administrators...

...is that you obsessively look for ways to make yourselves useful by creating conflicts that don't exist. Nobody in any reasonable dimension thinks "anyone who votes against is a poopyhead" is anything but obvious sarcasm. Please stop creating work for yourself, it isn't appreciated. PDMagazineCoverUploading (talk) 10:20, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@PDMagazineCoverUploading: I didn't mention any block, just a friendly request. It s rather sad that you take that in a confrontational way. You have to take into account the international status of this project, and the fact that many people don't have English as a native langage, and may misunderstand your "sarcasm".

--Poudou99 (talk) 20:00, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you are right, it's copyrighted. I'm a bit new to this and thought that because it was under National Library of Australia that it would be free for use in the public domain. I'll remove it. TedDougal'n'Jack (talk) 06:37, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good day! My friend (Наталья Шошитаишвили) contacted with me, to help her delete some files from commons, because as she found, there was not any watermarks on it. You reverted her additions. Can you help us to delete all files which uploaded before? Because as she informed me, the collection she owned was collected by her grandmother and this collection is now owned by her family. So she wants to share all collection with watermarks. Surprizi (talk) 07:23, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Surprizi: Hi,
I am sorry, but that's not OK for Wikimedia Commons rules. We only accept courtesy deletions within one week of upload, and these images were uploaded more than one year ago. The license is permanent. After that we only delete copyright violations, or for a valid reasons. Please see COM:DR for the details. Thanks, Yann (talk) 08:51, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Delvis Dutton booking report from Bulloch Jail on Dutton website All On Georgia.jpg

Hi Yann. Since you deleted File:Delvis Dutton booking report from Bulloch Jail on Dutton website All On Georgia.jpg as a copyvio, I'm wondering if that means the same should be done to all the other files licensed the same way which apparently come from the same source. File:Delvis Dutton (cropped).jpg, File:Delvis Dutton booking photo from Bulloch County Jail.jpg and File:Delvis Dutton Booking Photo From Bulloch County Sheriff Office.jpg all seem to come from the same source as the file you deleted. The last of the three is the source for the other two and it was uploaded under as {{PD-USGov}}, but the en:Bulloch County Sheriff's Department isn't part of the US federal government and Georgia doesn't appear to be one of the US states which release works by its employees into the public domain. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:47, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I think I'll bite this time. How exactly is this cropped photo file a copyvio when original - File:Daisy Edgar-Jones by Patrick Lovell, July 2021.jpg is cc-by-sa-2.0? Mithoron (talk) 21:23, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. It was tagged as copyvio by mistake. Yann (talk) 21:35, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The only reason I tagged the image as copyvio is because the image was uploaded separately from the original image, which previously had a CCL. But now the copyright holder has since changed the licensing to be more restrictive. So it's not allowed to be re-uploaded. Btspurplegalaxy (talk) 23:12, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Btspurplegalaxy: The license is irrevocable. Once it is published under a free license, it is not possible to change it. Yann (talk) 09:04, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've been informed about it. Btspurplegalaxy (talk) 09:05, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Quick update on behalf of the Commons Photographers User Group

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I hope you're well and enjoy taking photos for Wikimedia Commons. Here are a couple of quick updates on behalf of our group:

  • Our next virtual meeting will take place on Saturday, August 27. At this point we have two presentations lined up:
  • Suitable! Unsuitable! How to choose photos for a Wikipedia for children, “Klexikon (Ziko)
  • The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)
You can sign up for the event on this page: Virtual Meeting on August 27, 2022. – Given that we can accommodate more speakers, I'll invite you to get in touch with me in case you'd like to present on the 27th. You can reach me any time on my talk page or by sending a quick email.
  • Also, we now have a page for local events organized by members of our user group: Local events 2022. Please check it out and consider organizing an event yourself!
  • And finally, we're planning on offering a Post-processing Workshop on October 8. Please save the date; an events page with more information will go up later.

Thanks for being a member of our group and for sharing your works under a free license. Have fun taking pictures!

J. & E. Riggin Picture Deletion

Hi Yann, Can you explain why the picture of the vessel was deleted from that page J. & E. Riggin (schooner)? I checked all the parameters prior to posting it and had permission to use the photo. I just want to know how to correct the issue. Hope to hear back from you. Thanks. Kbahrami (talk) 16:07, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kbahrami: Hi,
There was no license, and you didn't react to the message posted on your talk page on July 27th. And since you are not the photographer, the copyright holder needs to confirm the license via email. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:12, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh man, I did not even see my talk page; I need to set the notifications up better. I will look at the link. Is the picture now gone completely? I had another user fix the alignment and I feel like I am stuck now. Kbahrami (talk) 16:15, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kbahrami: The file can be undelete if and when the permission is received. Yann (talk) 16:16, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! I think I saw the section called "I have received permission from the original author (not me) to upload the file to Commons." and it says exactly that. Ok, man, this is complicated lol. Really makes you appreciate the amount of work that goes in Wikipedia. Glad I support them :-) I will get the media owner to get the info to the email link and hopefully rectify this. Thanks for the guidance! Kbahrami (talk) 16:20, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Yann! We sent all the information in and a representative responded to Jessica Hazen. She has responded back however it has now been about 5 days since the last email exchange. Is it normal to take so many days before the image is restored? Thanks for the guidance! Kbahrami (talk) 08:16, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kbahrami: Yes, it can take some time. People dealing with the permissions are only volunteers. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:42, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that is what we presumed. Anyway, thank you and all of the volunteers...it is really impressive how well it all works and this is a good peek under the hood to see the machinery in action :-D Kbahrami (talk) 17:46, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Yann! Since the photo has been reinstated to the Wikimedia-Commons location I had created and the email exchange between the "Permissions - Wikimedia Commons" team and Jessica Hazen has now been coordinated with does this mean we can reverse the deletion on the referenced subject page? Can I simply just go and "undo" the last edit by you? Not sure what the next step is so I wanted to check with you first. Thanks! Kbahrami (talk) 05:24, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I don't think I handled that correctly. I was trying to flag that the source and author information are incorrect; this was clearly scanned out of a book somewhere, but it looks like it is probably old enough to be public domain. Your guidance on the standard procedure would be appreciated. Compassionate727 (T·C) 19:54, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Compassionate727: Yes, it is not an obvious copyright violation, so it is not eligible for speedy deletion. It may be in the public domain, but we need to know more information (source, date, author, etc.). Yann (talk) 20:05, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, my question is what I should have done instead. Tag it with Template:No source since? It isn't clear to me whether or not it is acceptable to use that on files where the source information is obviously wrong. Compassionate727 (T·C) 20:07, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Compassionate727: You should have opened a regular deletion, which I did. Yann (talk) 20:13, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this.

Hi Yann. It isn't written anywhere that the file is licensed under GODL-India, but the source doesn't prohibit from using that content given we attribute the source. --Ratekreel (talk) 16:55, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

GODL-India may apply to recent images, but I have never seen anything saying it can also apply to old images. Yann (talk) 17:00, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Could you please tell me the reason for renaming this file? I believe, that this renaming is against Commons:File renaming. There was no any obvious error in the filename (it depicts be-tarask:Пагоня, which was stated in the filename). Moreover, you changed the language of the filename from Belarusian to English, which looks for me like language discrimination of Belarusians. Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 22:21, 27 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kazimier Lachnovič: Stop trolling, or you will be blocked. This is the last warning. Yann (talk) 16:16, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Where do you see any kind of trolling from me? I just really frustrated that you blindly without any reasonable explanation support the actions, which in my opinion are clearly against Category:Commons guidelines. But I assume that you are reasonable person and really uninvolved user, that why I started this conversation here, not on the Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Here is a recent article on a quite trustful and neutral en:Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (Belarusian service), where this group is mentioned: A big scandal in Belarusian Wikipedia took place in August 2021. Then it turned out that the Belarusian article about the coat of arms en:Pahonia was removed from Wikipedia. The initiators were a group of Lithuanian editors of the free encyclopedia. <...> Ihar adds that it is impossible to claim that all Lithuanians on Wikipedia want to clean it of the Belarusian version of the history of the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania or do something similar. This is a small group of 3-4 people. However, they are very active in promoting their position. (it's almost automatic translation with two fixes of incorrectly translated names, I can give more detail explanation on your request). Here, in the Wikimedia Commons, I can also mention unsuccessful attempts by the member of the same group (Itzhak Rosenberg from en:Talk:Pahonia is Cukrakalnis from Category talk:Grand Duchy of Lithuania, you can also find Pofka there) to remove a category Category:History of Belarus from Category:Grand Duchy of Lithuania, that was stopped by uninvolved administrator User:Taivo based on the category talk page discussion. I could provide you more details as well as answer to questions you have, but first I need to know your opinion. P.S. I should also mention that I have faced here total ignoring by administrators quite obvious situations with wrong renaming (Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive 83#Renaming_the_file_against_the_official_guideline_on_Wikimedia_Commons, by the way, the renaming was initiated by Ke an, that is another member of the mentioned group), that's why I expressed some skepticism in the latest discussion. --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 09:26, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yann! Trying to follow what happened to Category:Stefan Rudnicki, which you deleted per COM:SPEEDY. It was populated with a few pictures, which were then recategorized to remove the Stefan Rudnicki category, although he is depicted. Was there a specific reason I'm missing? Or did you delete an empty category, because the unregistered user had removed all images from it? Just so I know what happened if I set out to create it again et cetera, and don't recreate any previously existing issues. Julle (talk) 11:51, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Something Good- Negro Kiss 1898.webm

Thanks for the closure on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Sir Robert PerPaper. I think File:Something Good- Negro Kiss 1898.webm is a copyvio, though (and the deletion widget is suggesting that I raise this directly with you instead of renominating): the video footage is certainly public domain, but there's no evidence that the music is. The University of Chicago restored the silent film a few years ago and added an uncredited soundtrack to it, but didn't release the result under a free licence. Lord Belbury (talk) 22:01, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Lord Belbury: If the music is not in the public domain, it can easily be removed, and the file reimported over this one, so I don't think deletion is necessary. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:32, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Is there a template for that, to say that a video's audio is likely copyrighted but being hosted on Commons anyway until someone edits the file? --Lord Belbury (talk) 10:15, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Lord Belbury: No, I don't think there is specific template for the audio, but you can make a request on Commons:Graphic Lab/Video and sound workshop. Yann (talk) 11:50, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find such a template either, I would have thought that hosting a video with copyrighted elements, even temporarily, isn't how Commons works. I'll make that request. --Lord Belbury (talk) 11:55, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it is probably a honest mistake. Yann (talk) 12:17, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Kind of, it was uploaded by a sock who clearly either doesn't understand or doesn't care about copyright. I'd assume it was laziness rather than a malicious attempt to release some music as public domain, but I expected it to fall under COM:PP and be deleted pending a reupload. --Lord Belbury (talk) 12:56, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Logo Ligue Braille

Cordialement, Yann (talk) 18:45, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Creator template revert

I asked the person who created the template what their opinion about this was. This is what they said on their talk page "If work is in public domain, based on the year when the author died, ({{PD-old-70}}, etc. ), than we should have a record on file of who is the author and when they died. In the old days that record was the Creator template, now it is mostly Wikidata and Creator templates serve as easy to remember redirect to Wikidata. So yes you should definitely have Wikidata item about the author (if there is sufficient information). Creating Creator template is fine but not necessary, as you can just add {{Creator|Wikidata=Q.....}} to the author field (or sometimes just Q....) to have the same effect." Which I mostly agree with. If you want to integrate something to that effect into the guideline be my guest. Your wording doesn't work though and clearly isn't in alignment with the consensus that "you should definitely have Wikidata item about the author (if there is sufficient information). Creating Creator template is fine but not necessary, as you can just add {{Creator|Wikidata=Q.....}} to the author field" either. Same goes for the 70 years PD versus 50 years thing. Thanks. Yes, Gandhi was jailed for his non-violent and civil desobedience actions, but it doesn't make him a criminal. I have a master on Gandhian philosophy, so I know what I am talking about. Yann (talk) 17:51, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to legally post images to Wikicommons

Hello Yann. I am new to the WikiCommons Family. I may not be aware of certain rules and may be breaking them. I am engaged in posting pictures of information about the Professional Football League of Uzbekistan. Some of the pictures are taken from public sites, some of them are my own, and some are posted directly with the official permission of the photojournalists. It would be great if you could explain if there is a problem with any of these cases. Bigkhanm (talk) 06:57, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bigkhanm: For any image previously published, or of which you are not the photographer, a formal written permission by email, or a free license on the source, is necessary. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. See also for derivative works (the issue with the medal). In that case, we need a permission from the medal designer. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:50, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited to provide input…

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent copyright-infringing editor

Hello, Yann. In March you blocked an editor with the user name Kelhuri for copyright infringements. Unfortunately they have continued to upload copyright infringing images. Dozens of uploads by this person have been deleted, several more are now nominated for deletion, and others not yet nominated look to me as though they should be. In fact as far as I can see the editor has never done anything on Commons apart from uploading copyright-infringements. You may like to consider an indefinite block. See User talk:Kelhuri and Special:Contributions/Kelhuri. JBW (talk) 10:36, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Добрый день! Не могли бы вы, пожалуйста, сказать мне, какую лицензию я могу указать для медиафайлов в этой статье, если они являются частью моего семейного архива? Lors565 deletions

Hi Yann, I've done all I can with Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Loris565. 11 of the images are not cleanly licensed, described, and sourced and 3 have PD-assumed on them (unknown author, but date of publication puts it well outside the range of anyone living). I've removed the deletion flags on those 14 images. There are 4 that I think are free and clear to delete (one has already been speedy deleted). 3 where there's no reliable source indicating authorship. 2 of these could probably be PD-assumed; the third one is more questionable. The last 2 are just mysteries to me. Nothing clear is showing up. I've also looked at uploads from User:Savary34 and his other socks; where I could quickly fix things I did, but there are still some improper "own work" attributions on a number of uploads from them. I'll try to work through what I can, but if you wanted to collect them for a deletion request that might get some others to help working on it, too. — Tcr25 (talk) 16:01, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
