Wikibreak

My strange remark
I was afraid the photo I nominated, though great, might be overshadowed by the other one, which is more spectacular at a glance, but even that probably didn't bear actually mentioning, and what I posted instead was really bizarre. I don't really have a good explanation for it. The fact that I was typing on little sleep doesn't explain it, and I've considered myself a feminist for decades and was raised by a proud and very active feminist. Adding my oppose vote on your FPC candidate after 5th day count
Hi, regarding me deleting the FPCbot vote count and adding an oppose vote. It was early in the day, and I had skimmed over the FPC rules and was under the impression that I would be allowed to override the 5th day vote count by adding an oppose vote (kind of like disabling a FPX by supporting). In hindsight it's clear that that was wrong, and the 5th day closing count is of course valid. Sorry. – LucasT 10:36, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

A 50/50 mix of a and b, you say...
Uploaded another version that might fit the bill? And then another (current) that undid my darkening of the sky that nobody asked for.
I'm surprised you eyed this one for FP, though I guess I should stop being surprised. If I'm being honest, this one was taken from the back seat of a Land Rover, while it was moving over rocks, during a second it slowed down to turn a corner... so I'm surprised it came out at all. :)
Other than the one already nominated, which seems to be going swimmingly, I would've probably eyed one of the images of the twins. On our last day in the desert, they walked right up in front of us and relaxed maybe 15' away from where we were sitting for a couple minutes (probably not actually twins, though). Unfortunately I don't think its cuteness and sharpness would carry it for FP (but what do I know). Either that or maybe pretty rock layers or one of these landscapes from a high point near the middle of the makhtesh... — Rhododendrites talk | 00:23, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
- Rhododendrites, thanks, the rays look very nice now and I think it has a shot as a nom. It has the required draaaamah that people tend to fall for. I mean, in such a shot from the "Land of God" you sort of expect Carlton Heston to come walking draped in curtains. ;) As a rule, it is the shots that you least expect to turn out good that gets the most acclaim. I'll just crop it a bit at the bottom to make the cut more harmonious before I nominate it.
- The current nom really popped out at QIC and it is getting its well-deserved good reception now. This landscape is certainly also worthy of a try. I only have two slots, so perhaps you could try it yourself. It might get a few comments about it not being knife-sharp but hey, no guts no glory. ;) The rock layers are very cool, but all those pics are a bit on the small side for such landscape photos and not as sharp as could be expected, so not my first choise. Wrt the "twins", those pics are really cute and sharp enough, but they also have a couple of things against them that usually don't go well at FPC. They are take a bit from the top down on the animals (animal photographers are expected to really crawl in the dirt for the best angle). They are also in their own environment where their camouflage color serves them well but spoils the contrast for a good photo. Their faces are also in shadow.
- I hope you had a very good trip and it is a joy to look at the photos you got there. Btw, I have a new modem for my internet connection, so I have finally been able to take after your style and upload a lot of photos of the same subject. (if you remember a previous conversation). Right now, my pet project is the guide with photography term for newbies. If you have something that you think has been left out please add it. - So here's a question that touches on the social norms and politics of FP. If I nominate the other one now, is it likely people will compare photos taken by the same person, photos that are both landscapes, photos from roughly the same location (very different parts of the makhtesh, but both from Makhtesh Ramon)? I know that it's common to compare nominations to existing FPs, so it seems that people would also compare nominations to each other. Granted, these are quite different images (if I also nominated this pose, I imagine few would support both), but I wonder how much this stuff comes into play...
- all those pics are a bit on the small side - maybe I will play with this one, which is a bit bigger. I don't remember how much, if any, I cropped on the bottom, but looking at it again I may be able to go for an effect of the layers continuing onto the ground. And yeah, I struggled with how to deal with the camouflage issue, which is a good way of explaining it. Getting on the ground wasn't possible in this case, despite them being very close...
- Very good trip indeed. Haven't even started going through the images from Jerusalem, including a tour of some of the recently excavated underground parts of the Old City. Don't know how much came out, since it was obviously dark and I didn't have a tripod (or the time in a single place to use one, really), but we'll see.
- Hooray faster internet! Commons:Photography terms seems like a worthy project. I'll see if there's anything I can add in the next couple days. - Rhododendrites, predicting the behavior of the FPC crowd... you might as well teach cats to walk in a parade... ;) Anyway, the main problem there is what is commonly called "viewer fatigue". So we try to space out similar photos a bit in time. I didn't mean that you should nominate it right away, I think a week or so i sufficient time before we put up another one of your Israeli pics. I only suggested it since I don't know how long these noms will take, you might get an oppose and then the voting period will be longer, or I might want to nominate some of my own photos or if I see some other worthy pic. I think you have been around long enough to do things a bit on your own now. :) And as you suspect a second pic of the ibex would not be a good idea.
- This one is no bad at all. Sharp enough and big enough, but maybe not as striking as the other. It is cut to a near square format and that might get some complaints since landscape format is preferred for such horizontal lines, but it is worth a shot.
- For the terms project, I finally can make good use of my very bad old photos. :) (see "Blown", "Burned out", Chromatic noise, and Saturation but that is not that bad) For the stitching error I remembered how much trouble I had with my first stitched panorama ever. I corrected some of the mistakes before uploading it then, but since I had the original photos on my backup drive, I ran them through Photoshop with the same result, but this time I didn't correct any of it. The reason I use mainly my own mistakes is mostly because it's easier with copyright and all. I too admired the tap photos (one especially and for the bokeh) and sent congratulations to Basotxerri a few days back.a Here is an analogue deep dof pic using hyperfocal lens settings.[1] The depth of field extends twice as far behind the point of focus as in front of it so you focus close and use tables or difficult maths for the settings so as not to 'waste' the focus you don't need. There is an easy way to do this but I can't find my notes. Here is a digital example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ParcodegliAcquedottiRoma_(3).JPG No maths just the effect of a tiny lens. Opinions varied Italians liked it a lot but North Europeans thought the foreground block an annoying distraction. - Hi Ikan, thanks for liking it that's very kind of you, but there is no more room to the left. I cut it just where an ugly barbwire fence on the cliff started and the bow of another boat on the ground stuck out. Sorry. I like the photo very much and it got a nice comment at QIC, but as I said boats and ships are very hard to get through FPC since most users are not used to them. I have some railway photos coming up, they usually get treated a bit better since so many users are interested in that area.
- Btw, am I the only one who thinks the bow-of-wreck photo looks a little bit like a pic of a blimp with the mooring cables hanging down. I thought for sure I was going to get some comment about that.
