A sample from the Contrived Raspberry Arrangement series

[As foreshadowed]: A little indulgent focus stacking and macro fun. :) — Rhododendrites talk05:43, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

I really love this!
Rhododendrites, that is really great work! Talk about making progress! And they thought I was crazy... but here you stacking and "stacking" raspberries. Really fun, isn't it? :) I also like the way the discussion at the new FPCC. lion pic is going, it may be a bit slow, but the only thing discussed is the orientation of the gull, no one is mentioning the usual things they always come down on like sharpness, light, CA, composition, the horizon, whatever, all that is fine and that means you have come a very long way since your first QIC. :) Now you know that you have the skills to compose and take an FPC, so welcome to your "new" hobby. I had the perfect reply for anyone questioning the sharpness of that pic, since you can actually see the wings of the fly hovering above the lions' butt. That is sharp in my book! Subject-related trivia: At one point in my life I was considering studying at Scripps, I've been there and think it's a fantastic facility but life took another path. cart-Talk 12:04, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Would it be gauche for me to support the FP, or is it expected? Do you work in oceanography? — Rhododendrites talk02:34, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites: Of course you can support your pic, I was surprised you hadn't done that already! :) You don't have to but most users, even the most seasoned, do if they are proud of and satisfied with their photo. I have a few photos that have been hinted as suitable for FPC, but I'm not satisfied with so I would oppose them if they turned up there.
Sadly no, I don't work in oceanography. I more or less grew up on a boat, so the sea's in my blood, I'm a "harbor rat" (not dockrat, there is a difference! ;) ), and when I was young some marine education seemed like a good idea. But life and my parents wanted otherwise. We have a much minor version of Scripps here, where I hang out from time to time, I can't stand being away from the sea for long. :) In harbors and on boats/ships you also meet new people from all over the world all the time, which is probably why I feel so at home on the Wiki-projects. I work at a small publishing company, a job I stumbled into by accident and a need to be able to pay the rent. I've stayed at it since it gives me a lot of freedom to pursue all of my other "Renaissance man" interests. I translate stuff, do layout work, select pics for covers, ads, info material, etc. That means I sift through hundreds of photos for the right one (and yell at photographers for not giving me what I want), that is why I'm actually more adept at scrutinizing photos than taking them myself. cart-Talk 09:57, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Comments I think this is a terrific photo. I have doubts that it would get enough votes if nominated at FPC, but I would vote for it, and to my mind, it's an excellent, professional-quality photo and really - maybe unusually for you? - an old-school photo similar to one that could have been shot in black & white 90 years ago or more. -- Ikan Kekek 13:50, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I took it mainly to document the weather since frost fog is not that common (thankfully, it's dreadful!) I was mostly surprised myself how well it turned out. I'll keep it in mind. I'm not at all against old-school photography, did a lot of that in the analogue era and I revert to it from time to time. W.carter 13:55, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Merry Xmas & Happy New Year! I hope you and your friends and family are healthy and safe in the hands of God. It's been nice to have you over at FPC trying out some original ideas (if there are actually any left - Flickr says it has like 15 billion photos or something close!). I especially like B&W - I've got every copy of B&W magazine ever published. This new floodlight photo is great! Hopefully the church interior troop won't show up with stiff upper lips and opposes... Let me also wish the same Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to Yann. He happens to have been the nominator of my one and only FP. Take care both of you guys, and somebody have some pie and hot chocolate and all that for me (I'm lactose intolerant and a Vegan for 10+years now). lNeverCry 07:44, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
Thank You ever so much and a very Happy Holiday to you too! I'm glad my quirky photos are appreciated by some, far from all make it to FP but hopefully they can get some new ideas going and diversify FPC even more. The floodlight pic is not totally B&W, there are hundreds of tiny rainbows in it at full size, a small "easter egg" for the colors only users. :) I'll +1 you for lactose intolerance, right now I'm preparing my legendary X-mas tacos for a small lunch, an outside-the-box tradition we've kept ever since an impromptu trip to Tecate many years ago. Stray light ray, FPC

Hello!

So, you would rather prefer something like this one: File:Signal vor Einfahrt Bahnhof Meiningen 2016-11-28 HBP - B v2.jpg? (I write here to avoid cluttering the FPC page.) Kind regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:48, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Grand-Duc, yes I would find that more appealing, but that is only my oppinion. You would not clutter up FPC by posting this question there, we are quite used to these kinds of conversations there and I think other voters would also find this interesting, perhaps even as an alternative nom like it is done here for example. If you post this question at FPC, I will be happy to answer there as well. Cheers, cart-Talk 11:09, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Swedish music

I just voted support on your cedar. It struck me as kind of fitting that I was listening to "Porcelain Heart" by Opeth as I voted, and as I'm writing now. My two favorite bands are from Sweden, Opeth and Katatonia. Mikael Åkerfeldt‎ is great of course, but Jonas Renkse is a real wizard! If I ever see an FP of Jonas by you, you'll be my hero for life... lNeverCry 22:28, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

I'll keep my eyes open and my camera ready then!. I haven't listened to them that much, but I have a very, very wide music taste and it varies with time and mood. I can listen to Baroque arias just as well as Korn, at the moment when I'm writing this I have Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and The Heavy (among others in my ear phones). Thanks for the !vote too! Much appreciated. :) cart-Talk 22:49, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
Opeth and Katatonia are legends in the home of Melodic Death Metal, Göteborg (we call it Gothenburg), and Stockholm. "In Flames" and "Amaranthe" are two more great bands from Sweden that I love. A rich musical tradition! The Finns are great too, with Tarja Turunen and the wonderful Marco Hietala... Plenty of ear candy... lNeverCry 23:45, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm glad that you got the group photo thing I was [sort of] going for with this one. If I'm being honest, I was sort of thinking about school photo day when taking all those fruit pictures recently, and many times thought about trying to present/light them more expressively, but ultimately time and concern for impact on encyclopedic value convinced me not to. I was touched to see the group effort on this one, as well. — Rhododendrites talk18:02, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

It really is a great pic and I did see that some serious thought had gone into arranging it. I'm happy that other users felt so too, a lesser photo would not have rallied up as much positive group effort as this did. (I'm also talking about the team effort to promote it at QIC) You are one of those easy-going, unassuming yet talented users that people like to work with. It's as simple as that. :) Btw, don't be shy about doing some "real" group/class photo of the fruits. With some focus stacking such a pic could be both hilarious and a great photo. cart-Talk 18:11, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the New Pear. Let's hope 2017 doesn't go pear-shaped. The cartoon photo reminds me of some fruit postcards I once had, with faces on oranges, strawberries, etc. this Eager Orange was one and this tomato. Need of Help !

Hi Wotan Carter.

Could you please provide me some explanations about this technique I do not know ? Do you think it could be useful for restoration of old pictures like this one ? You opened me a door... I'm a fan of finding old photographs needing restorations, and the next step for the restoration of this one is now to reduce the noise, and it appears that I can't manage how to do (if it is possible). I use GIMP, no problem with transparency in .png. I would be very grateful if you could do something for me. No emergency of course. Thanks in advance !--Jebulon (talk) 09:39, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Jeb, see this. Jee 09:55, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Jee, I've already read this !--Jebulon (talk) 09:59, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi Jeb and thanks Jee, well if you have read that explanation, I don't have to go into the basics of that technique. It works because even if you have the exact same settings on a camera and take the exact same photos a second or so apart, the noise in the picture will be different every time. Even if you take ten photos. When you stack them on top of each other with a transparency that corresponds with the number of photos (3 pics = 33%, 5 pics = 20%, etc.) the grain in those images will cancel out each other and you get a clear pic. Unfortunately this does not work for restorations since you only have one photo to work with. If the original photographer had managed to take two photos that looked exactly the same to the eye, it might be possible to layer those scans, but I have never seen two such photos from the early days of photography.
Noise in old photos is very problematic. When I did this very minor restoration, the only way I could reduce the noise was to go in at 400% with a "smear finger/brush" of 4px at 14% and rub gently along lines. I use a pen tablet when I work with pictures, a mouse is not sufficiently accurate. Noise reduction programs can't distinguish the grain in an analogue photo from details in a photo the way a human eye can. For that you would need some very large face recognition program from FBI or something, and even such programs can't tell if a dot a photo is dirt or a pimple. Désolé... :( cart-Talk 11:22, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks a lot W. I understand that it is useless to superpose various versions of the very same image: the noise is always the same too. Actually, it works with bracketting. I use a pen tablett too, even for my "normal" pictures (cloning out a wire or so). And no way to work on old pictures without this instrument, indeed a mouse is unsufficient. About "face recognition program from FBI", I get one at work (and better than the one of the FBI...) Clin--Jebulon (talk) 15:06, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Aha! So Jebulon is just Jason Bourne spelled the wrong way. cart-Talk 15:42, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Houseboats

Green houseboat for you.
Red and black houseboat for you.
No need of painting, and Notre-Dame just above ! Welcome !
Last batch of houseboats for you!

I have not forgotten your request for houseboats. I found this one, that I just uploaded. I had to crop my original quite a lot, so the quality is perhaps so-so, and the light could've been better. But still a pretty neat little houseboat in my opinion. What do you think? -- Slaunger (talk) 23:28, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Slaunger, thanks for showing me this. :) It's a fun little houseboat with its crooked veranda and cheap curtains, contrasting against the well-kept house and you've included the reflection and dinghy very nicely in the composition. But as you say, the light and the sharpness are not that great. If you are thinking about this for an FPC, I think it falls a bit short. For such a simple houseboat the quality of the photo needs to be almost perfect. cart-Talk 10:29, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi cart, No I just wanted to show it, I realize it is not FP quality given the circumstances. -- Slaunger (talk) 12:12, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi both nordic friends. I don't think this is really a house"boat", but better a stilt house. What do you think ?--Jebulon (talk) 11:38, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
To classify it correctly it is a pontoon house. It is floating but has to be towed by a tugboat. cart-Talk 11:50, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Ok, a pontoon. You are right. This time I give you a proper houseboat a red and black one! -- Slaunger (talk) 20:05, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Veeery nice! Thanks, that is something I could consider living on (after a bit of a paint job). cart-Talk 20:17, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Minor barnstar
A tiny barnstar because you only have a tiny camera. Once you get a proper camera, you can get a proper barnstar. (joke)

For demonstrating that good photos come from the photographer, not from a big lump of electronics and glass. Colin (talk) 10:44, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

And a "minor" thank to you Colin! I know you guys like to compare the size and length of your ...ahum... lenses. I perfectly happy with my tiny camera since it fits nicely in my handbag. :) --cart-Talk 13:58, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Photographer's Barnstar
Per Colin. You have a bridge camera and you can take a FP. Welcome to this small group where photographers with a camera of shit make amazing works. The Photographer 13:32, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
Don't you dare go insulting my camera, my precious!!! It is very dear to me since it is all I have and we have been through much together. You can insult me, but my trusty camera and my shitty beat up car are off limits. Seriously, I know what you mean, thanks! --cart-Talk 13:58, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
I remember myself with my SX30 IS Bridge camera years ago and I remember how was hard get the FP level with this camera. Your camera is different is a "new" camera, however, I am sure that you will love a DSLR more, much more, the change will be overwhelming --The Photographer 15:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Still haven't FPCed

Well the pears FPC seems to be going gangbusters so far. (There's a phrase that I'm not sure has traveled outside the US yet...). I've still been too waffly to nominate something myself. Still considering one of the cormorants silhouettes, animal dogma be damned (this or this), and possibly the Thunderbolt, which I mentioned before (though the tight left crop would probably kill it, I imagine). Curious as to your thoughts about a few others (trying to think outside of the bright crisp stuff): frozen fountain (dramatic, though the surroundings are necessarily out of focus, since it was crowded and nighttime), paints (the left/right being cut off may be a problem), paintbrush closeup (a few bristles out of focus, but I like that you can see how it's been used in different ways with different paints), foggy kite surfer... Hrm. — Rhododendrites talk02:04, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

You're right, this is the first time I've heard of "gangbusters", "waffly" was also new to me. Thanks for teaching me. :) I think you should at least start trying some noms, what have you got to lose, really? ;) If you go for the coromants, I suggest the first one. The Thunderbolt is a possibility, it might be better to show just the ride though, see note. not totally sure though... BTW (!) There is a white line at the top of the Thundebolt pic and a white triangle in the bottom right corner. The fountain is also nice, could do with some post touching up though, I can help you with that if you want. Paints, no, light too uninteresting. Paintbrush, yes but it is too dark right now, could help you with that one too. Kite surfer is unfortunately lost in the bad light, sorry. cart-Talk 11:57, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure of how "gangbusters" entered the American lexicon, but in my experience it takes two forms: something being "like gangbusters" (~forceful, aggressive, showy efficiency, especially as a process begins) and some process "going gangbusters" (going very successfully/effectively). I figured it must come from the Hollywood obsession with early 20th century organized crime (Al Capone, public enemy number one, etc.). A quick google says it comes from a radio show along those lines, Gang Busters, because the show gets off to a noisy start? That seems odd. Meh. Waffly is just me taking liberties.
Regarding the Thunderbolt: Yikes. Good point. Surprised that made it through QI and VI that way. Fixed now. — Rhododendrites talk13:46, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
As a talk page stalker, if I may interfere, I just would say that I completely share cart's opinion about the suggested FPC candidates...--Jebulon (talk) 17:05, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
Nice to have such eminent stalkers as you Jeb, I'll just give the bat signal to Rhod in case he doesn't stalk my page. cart-Talk 17:32, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Rhododendrites, ok I admit, I do stalk your uploads from time to time just because you very often find some cool event to shoot. :) I really loved this, had it only been a bit wider so that not so many body parts were cut, not so much CA and maybe a bit darker, I would have nominated it in an instant. It is such a Norman Rockwell moment with all these ordinary slightly scruffy-looking men in various relaxed and slouching positions, all intent on the game. Even down to the casual newspaper with Hillary as a marker for events going on outside this little group. The other one includes all of the group, but sadly it's "closed" to the viewer and you can't really see what's going on in the middle. I think you should visit that park more often. :) cart-Talk 11:59, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Ah yes. I agree with the comparison. I took a few shots as I passed through there on my way to this thing. There are regular xiangqi games in several parks in the area. One of these days I'll learn to play, but I'll inevitably be back through there. — Rhododendrites talk13:58, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

cart
is smart!
-- Slaunger (talk) 16:01, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

- big time, because cart is not smart, she <bleeps> up all the time. --cart-Talk 16:28, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

My english is too poor, I don't understand "bleep up". But please forgive Slaunger, he is under a strong flu, he does not completely know what he writes. But no worry, cart is smart. For sure.--Jebulon (talk) 22:08, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
Jeb, in America they censor some movies and tv-shows, you are not allowed to swear or say dirty words. If someone does that, the cover the sound of that with a tone that sounds like "Bleep!". This has filtered down into written text if you jokingly want to cover a not too civilized word. So instead of writing "she fucks up" or "she screws up" you write "she <bleeps> up", like if that censor tone could be heard on the page. Sorry that I can't write this in French, I speak it rather well but my spelling is so bad that you wouldn't be able to understand that either. ;) --cart-Talk 22:20, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
Yes I know that, we have a similar "bip" in french. But "to bleep up" has a meaning, following google translate... Well no matter, I.ll don't know what you bleep up all the time...--Jebulon (talk) 23:26, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
I actually felt I had a short period of clear-sightedness, when I wrote that two-line poem earlier today. And I have also yet to see you <bleep> anything severely up on Commons. -- Slaunger (talk) 23:39, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
Slaunger, don't tempt fate!! Otherwise, I <bleep> up in real life, mes amis, real life. Told you there was a reason my friends call me CJ, as in Calamity Jane (fr: Calamité Jane) An thanks Jeb for the houseboat. :) A boat in Paris trumps one in Amsterdam for me. I've wanted one ever since I saw the tv-series Highlander, where he lives on such a barge. Does it include a gorgeous dark-haired swordsman? :D cart-Talk 00:13, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Also the translation that Google gives for "to bleep up" to French is not exactly correct, it is a very bad translation. cart-Talk 00:21, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Speaking of censorship tools and translation, I always wondered how much meaning was lost/changed when movies were reedited for network television with swear words replaced by minced oaths. I don't know how much they do this elsewhere, but the idea, of course, is that it blends in with the dialogue more than, say, a bleep or silence. But sometimes matching the mouthing of the words proved more important than actually making sense. So I remember one where "mother fucker" was replaced by "mother father" (?!), and alternatively "mother lover", "melon farmer", "my friend"... Sometimes there was clearly very little care put into blending the tone of the speaker's voice, so it would be like someone else speaking the goofy replacement in the middle of a sentence. Turned into kind of a game when my friends and I noticed that a particularly profane movie we were familiar with was going to air. Can't say I miss it, though. Thank god for the godless internet and cable tv. — Rhododendrites talk14:14, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
