ScotGov Flickr images

Hey hey! Saw that you'd uploaded a few images from the ScotGov Flickr; just to let you know that I'm currently going through the whole stream transferring them over. There's also a category for them c:Category:Images from the Scottish Government Flickr account if you get to any of them before me. Also please note that not all the images on the stream are on a wiki-compatible license, they agreed to move as many as possible to CC-BY-SA but there are a few that they needed to omit. (I had a conversation with them about this a month or so ago)  :) Lirazelf (talk) 12:23, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Will do - see (pre written) reply Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 14:22, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Review

Hi, I was wondering if you'd be able to review the license for this file - File:Musical "List z Warszawy" demo - fragment.webm ? ArturSik (talk) 14:54, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

File:Maggie Gates 2 and Lisa Welchman 4.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Joye Hummel Woman of the Day.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:1947 Epp Kaidu Alli Tammemets.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Ethel Grimwood portrait

Hi Victuallers, I think the anonymous portrait of Ethel Grimwood (1892) which you uploaded may be by the English portrait artist John Hanson Walker (1844-1933). An article in the 'The Times'(London) of May 21, 1892, p.6, reviewing that year's exhibition at the Royal Academy notes: "Lastly, Mr. Hanson Walker is to be congratulated on his good fortune in securing Mrs. Frank Grimwood as a sitter (976); he has repaid the debt by painting a much better portrait than he has ever painted before..." RLamb (talk) 15:04, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@RLamb: Nice spot. I should add that to the description. I see that her biog has another portrait on the cover and presumable Ms Morse can tell us which is which. Luckily it will still be out of copyright whatever the outcome. Victuallers (talk) 16:48, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
No, I was wrong. I got hold of the biography of John Hanson Walker, brought out in 1987 by the same Belinda Morse who also did the book on Mrs Grimwood. (It turns out Belinda Morse is Walker's great-granddaughter.) Her biography has an illustration of the portrait he exhibited in the R.A. in 1892 and it's not this one. Walker's R.A. painting shows Mrs Grimwood head and shoulders only, turning three quarter left, in a black dress with a square neckline and with the Royal Red Cross award she was given for bravery pinned over her heart. Apparently it's still in the US in private hands. The portrait in the Wikipedia article is essentially the same as the one appearing on the front of the Illustrated London News of 27 June 1891 (https://collections.nlm.nih.gov/catalog/nlm:nlmuid-101460235-img). But either way, as you say, it seems to be in the public domain so no worries:) RLamb — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 79.69.196.100 (talk) 15:29, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Good time of the day, you marked my image Dießen, Haltepunkt St Alban v SO, 1 as {{Check categories}}. The image has four categories, and I don't see which one(s) might be problematic. Or do you mean that an important category is missing? Any hints would be appreciated. (Edit: your comment was Requesting category check.) -- ~~

My error I suppose or new app tool error. Your pic looks fine. Sorry Victuallers (talk) 16:01, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Proper indication of derivative works in your Woman of the Day-pictures

Hi Victuallers, as you may have noticed, I flaged several of your pictures because the source of derivative work is not properly indicated. Your pictures show other images, and you need to indicate where they are coming from. The easiest way to do so is by simply linking to the original image on Wikimedia Commons. In this way, it is possible to verify their licences. Furthermore, you need to comply with the conditions of the image's licence, e.g. if a picture is licenced under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, you need to attribute the author of the included picture. The same is true for the text, which is licenced under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. In this case, the easiest way to attribute the many authors of an article would be by simply linking to the history page of the respective article. Thank you and cheers, --Andel (talk) 06:54, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Flickr2Commons

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").--A1Cafel (talk) 14:28, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

@A1Cafel: I think you will find that I nearly always do or the tool at "upload file". I only download them where there is a (mistaken) license issue which the automatic tools refuse to override. Victuallers (talk)
