File:Monumenta 3 (4388604668).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello, do you also do cosplay stuff? I got this bunch of high quality (though not always super-high resolution) photos in cc-by: https://www.flickr.com/photos/madunjau/ I'd like to get them uploaded properly, I'm only doing Desucon 2014 for now. --Nemo 21:53, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Delete older versions?

Hello! Is it possible to delete or remove an older version of a file where the uploader is not the original photographer? If you look at File:Hanne Sørvaag.JPG you can see it was uploaded by user Jarvin (Jarle Vines) 1. jul. 2009. 1. sep. 2011 a new file with the same name was uploaded by someone else and this is a file from the artists cover, a part of it can be seen here: http://www.rb.no/lokal_kultur/article5630997.ece So, my question is; is it possible to delete the file from 1. sep. 2011 and 14. apr. 2013? Hello! I see that you unprotected this file on 3 February, noting that "indefinite protection is way too long". Can you please elaborate? By definition, indefinite protection has no predefined duration (so I'm confused as to how it could be described as "too long").

Most of the English Wikipedia's main page content is scheduled for a specific day or segment thereof, but items appearing in the In the news section have no predetermined end times. When I protect such an image, I routinely return to unprotect it shortly after it leaves the main page. In this instance, I found that you'd already unprotected it. You did so less than an hour after KrinkleBot cascade-protected it via Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/en (a fallback of varying reliability, which was greatly delayed in this instance), so that was a close call.

I'd sincerely appreciate an explanation of your concern. —David Levy 10:56, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

I await your response. In the meantime, please don't unprotect File:Bjoerndalen cutout.JPG, which currently appears on the English Wikipedia's main page. Thank you. —David Levy 23:06, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,

Hello Russavia,

Hi Dmitry, I will not be able to support the nomination, as this may now well be regarded as "canvassing". In future, it is best not to leave such support notices to other editors as it is frowned upon by the community. a request

You wrote: "No evidence that these are ACTUALLY works of the US government. If they were, we seriously should be questioning why these "terrorists" were shot with a "Canon camera" rather than with a M16. Write your congressman today!"

Should American counter-intelligence officials have shot these individuals with a rifle, not a camera?

For all we know, US counter-intelligence officials, or their agents, may have snapped these photos years ago, when the men were merely associates of men who were suspects, before they became most wanted suspects themselves. Please bear in mind that even if there is strong circumstantial evidence against them, they may still be innocent.

I am sorry if it seems natural to you that governments have the authority to kill suspects, who have never been tried, as if they had already had their identity confirmed, already been convicted and already been given a death sentence. But please recognize that this is a highly controversial opinion -- and, I suggest, one that really doesn't belong in a discussion here.

Yes, we are all volunteers, but shouldn't we still aim for a certain level of professionalism, in deletion discussions? Geo Swan (talk) 01:21, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Not really, we are able to have a little fun, and the comments whilst meant to be facetious, are actually quite valid. russavia (talk) 14:13, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

No, you are saying that. :) russavia (talk) 08:47, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Russavia,

I have noticed your edit stating that this image does not pass review: could you please explain why do you think so? I hope this is a misunderstanding as I am sure that this image was available under cc-by, and I generated image description using this tool. Thanks — NickK (talk) 14:39, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi User:NickK, it was an error on my part, as well as the DR (which I have rollbacked and deleted the DR). Just one thing though, with images that you upload, you really shouldn't do the licence review yourself on images you upload, as this has the potential to create problems if the licence should be disputed in the future by the copyright holder. Having said that, I see https://picasaweb.google.com/102652274152528116947 has several 100/1000s images under CC licence, it might be good if we ask someone to bot upload them -- someone like User:Matanya might be able to help with this, perhaps you could approach them and see if they can help with it :) Cheers, russavia (talk) 14:55, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
I am sorry, but I do not see the issue with doing the license review: I just try to save time of other reviewers, as I am currently uploading a large number of images from different sources available under a free license, and I don't really understand how license review by myself as an image reviewer and some other image reviewer may be different if we both make the same job. However, if there is someone willing to check some ten extra uploads per day or there is a policy against my actions, I can stop this
Concerning mass uploads, I have already contacted Matanya here for an even better photo stream (featuring historical photos from 2004 events and over 1500 photos from Euromaidan), but he does not have any tool like that. The issue with Svoboda stream is that they have too many photos that are not really useful for Commons, like several hundreds of images of their supporters during various events or photos of their leader on every single day. As moreover these photos are poorly described, this will be quite difficult to filter and properly describe, but it may be worth a try — NickK (talk) 15:18, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Anna Wladimirowna Nikulina

Dear Russavia,

may I ask you a question?
I am researching the war hero Anna Wladimirowna Nikulina (rus. Анна Владимировна Никулина; born 22. December 1904 in Tscherkessk) and can not find her death date. Here she got a memory plate on what would have been her 110th birthdate. Where could I inquire - or do you find a reference - when she died? Cheers Grey Geezer (talk) 12:22, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
@Grey Geezer: , this is indeed a mystery. From the German article, we know she was still alive in at least 1987. I can find no reference to her at http://www.warheroes.ru either. I found http://konen1968.ya.ru/ where on Yandex he mentions he is her grandson (http://clubs.ya.ru/4611686018427397615/replies.xml?item_no=11470), perhaps you can try to get in contact with him. Perhaps @Ymblanter: might be able to help here with this. russavia (talk) 12:43, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, I'll contact ymblanter. Case closed (here). Grey Geezer (talk) 13:55, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi,

Could you stop uploading picutres from flickr from exhibitions in Poland without proper prove that the authors of original works shown on exhibitions agreed for free licence of derivative works? Photographer agreement from flickr is not enough in this case, as Polish freedom of panorama does not work for exhibitions inside buildings and also open-air contemporary exhibitions. It applies to the works exhibited permanently on public streets, squares and parks. Also - for unknown reasons you add to all of them category:Elżbieta Chodorowska, which has nothing in common with these exhibitions. Polimerek (talk) 18:33, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Discussed on IRC. Thanks @Polimerek: . russavia (talk) 01:50, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

ITU

To answer your question, I've annoted the image and left a message on the TP. Pleclown (talk) 09:33, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for that @Pleclown: . russavia (talk) 01:47, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

Several files you uploaded are broken, please re-upp and re-tag for review. --Denniss (talk) 18:23, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks @Denniss: I'll take a look at those in a short while. Cheers, russavia (talk) 01:47, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
Hi Russavia, you may want to re-upload this one too. Thanks --Jwh (talk) 08:34, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

Dumps into the "Landscapes" category

You have recently added numerous photographs the the "Landscapes" category. The page as a clear description of what landscape is and what should not be added to the page, along with a banner warning that the page is overcrowded. I realise the page was uncrowded when you dumped these images there. That is because myself and several other editors spent the past 12 months cleaning it of thousands of images of the type that you just dumped. The landscapes category is not a dustbin category. As the page notes, picture should cover at least a few square kilometers to be called a landscape. Pictures of aircrft, people, buildings mountains and forests do NOT belong into this category. Thank you for your additions to Wikimedia, but please take a little care with the categorisation of future uploads. If you are unsure where to place an image, you can categorise it as "Uncategorised" or just leave the category field blank. By doing so the image will probably be categorised correctly eventually by other editors. By dumping images into categories where they do not belong, you hide them, making them unavailable to others and effectively wasting your time in uploading.Mark Marathon (talk) 10:35, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

@Mark Marathon: , these images are uploaded using a bot, and it uses tags from Flickr to place into categories. It's not always perfect, and sometimes there are misplaced categories. This is why I have both Category:Files uploaded by Russavia (cleanup) and Category:Files uploaded by Russavia (aviation), so that uploads are gone through and cleaned up. Such categories would be removed in due course. However, the way that you have done it is not the way to do it. As one can see from the air show photo, you have removed all categories, including the air show category, my tracking categories, and the category for the photographers photos, and placed them into the non-existent Category:Uncategorised. If you must remove the landscape category, in this instance it was around 40 photos in total, don't do it this way, but rather use Commons:Cat-a-lot to do it, and simply remove the landscape category, leaving other categories intact. If not for your note, I wouldn't have known that these images are not in my tracking category, and thence wouldn't have been able to fix them. Please keep that in mind if you can. Cheers, russavia (talk) 12:27, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Well, Mark Marathon: If you want to make file uncategorize, remove all non-hidden categories and put {{subst:Unc}}, so file can be categorized into day, year "Category needed" category. Revicomplaint? 12:39, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

Failed uploads

Just to let you know that you have a few images that failed to upload properly above. Don't know what was the problem or whether you wish to have the images deleted. Its up to you. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:40, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: , thanks for letting me know, I was advised here, I'll sort this out shortly. Cheers. russavia (talk) 02:25, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

US embassy London

I saw that you uploaded this image from the flickr account of the US embassy in London, the thing is that this embassy chose to protect that image as a non-free licence (cc-by-nd) and thus not allowed to be uploaded to commons, other images from there have the same licence....I don't think anything on their flickr stream is under a free licence.--Stemoc (talk) 05:10, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

@Stemoc: , as a work of the United States government, it is in the public domain. I have had a discussion with one US mission, and they told me that the US State Department requires them to use an ND licence. This is actually illegal. russavia (talk) 05:12, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
I'm aware of that, I tried to get a few US embassies to change their licences as well, only one changed it to a free licence (us embassy in canada), and one actually had a discussion with me but refused to change the licence, they do not like people "manipulating" their images....we need to find an outcome on this, it could affect 1000's of images...and possibly allow 1000's more..--Stemoc (talk) 05:18, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
It's irrelevant whether they like people to manipulate their images; the fact remains that they are in the public domain, and all use is allowed. For works of the US government, we will simply ignore any conditions that they try to place on their imagery. It is actually illegal for them to try and do so. Take Pete Souza, the official White House photographer, who claims: "This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House." That, of course, is absolute rubbish. Or take Commons:Featured_picture_candidates/File:Fat_Albert_low_level_pass.jpg, this is on Flickr as being CC-BY-NC-ND. Again, absolute rubbish. So go ahead and upload the Montevideo embassy photos; I would actually like to try and see them file a DCMA notice on them :) russavia (talk) 05:25, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
@Stemoc: I have gone ahead and uploaded File:Glenn Close in Uruguay.jpg (and made a cropped version of the image). Note that this says that the US Embassy is the producer of the content, and they acknowledge it is in the public domain. Interestingly, the two photographers whom the US Embassy hires to do their photographs (being works for hire, the US Embassy is the copyright holder, and hence PD), Pablo Castro and Vince Alongi, provide their photographs under a CC-BY licence. In the case of Alongi, he has specific attribution requirements (refer to his profile) and File:Reinaldo Gargano.jpg for how he requires attribution. But the photographs they provide to the US Embassy as a work for hire are nevertheless public domain. russavia (talk) 05:46, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Glenn Close's image was just an example, it would be great if we can get an outcome on this, as in support from other users here and then make a list of US state departments that run flickr accounts which other users can upload images from regardless of their licensing options...--Stemoc (talk) 06:05, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
File:Norwegian's CEO Bjørn Kjos.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Copyright help and favor

Can you please read the following:

http://www.sylviastuurman.eu/sitemap/foto/#gebruik says:

you use the photograph through a link to the photograph as it is put on this site: the idea is that you don't copy the photograph to your own site.

I'm guessing that they only want their photos to be linked to or hotlinked. Do you think that you could contact Ernst Anepool and request his permission to host and share the photos on Commons? You seem to be good at doing stuff like that - certainly better than me. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:57, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I just don't have time to get into correspondence with the copyright holder on this; particularly as they do seem to be adamant what they do and don't want. russavia (talk) 04:47, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

No Yann, I am not going to sit idly by and allow key components of COM:L and COM:PRP thrown out the window, all because of a close that you have gotten totally wrong and should not have done in the first place. russavia (talk) 18:34, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Michael Angelo

Regarding your move of File:Michael Angelo (6782039978).jpg into Category:Files uploaded by Russavia (delete): that inscription was a formative factor in my experience of culture shock when I arrived in Australia more than 30 years ago; it's a wonderful example why cultural cringe is a perfectly rational attitude here. I would very much like this image to remain on Commons. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:16, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

And stay it shall. It was an erroneous move on my part. I would have caught it before I deleted out of scope/problematic images, but good to see you noticed too. Cheers, russavia (talk) 03:27, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Hey there! I am requesting restoration of the above image. While I had no intention of using the image a couple of years ago, my role as a member of the Affiliations Committee supports the need for full disclosure and identification. I appreciate your help. Excess trivial categorisation from Flickr

Please be careful converting tags to categories. Tags are very lightweight and all sorts of peripheral rubbish gets added to them. Commons categories are rather more firmly defined and applied.

As an example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Normandy_%2710-_American_Cemetery,_Colleville_%284824271539%29.jpg&oldid=120221576

I've created Category:Normandy '10: American Cemetery, Colleville for this group. Category:Colleville (and others) now contains about 900 files that don't belong.

Thanks Andy Dingley (talk) 15:17, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for creating that cat @Andy Dingley: . I am cleaning up uploads as I go, so the 900 wouldn't be there for too long. Thanks for assistance. Cheers, russavia (talk) 15:21, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
That cat should catch a sizable bunch of them, and could easily be scripted by string matching the filenames. There would need to be some other cats created for what are obviously related images, but from different events. I'd do this quickly and probably over-simplified, just by looking at batches of similar filenames. If these names are wrong or their parent cats are wrong, that's easy to fix later.
I think the root cause of this is that the Flickr uploader had half a dozen different Normandy events, but applied the same tag batch to each of them. We should try and get these batches separated ASAP, which makes the rest of the process easy. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:30, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
