Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

• @Aristeas: Vielen Dank für diese humorvolle Variante des bekannten Memes, dessen Originalbild gerade auf FPC nominiert wurde. Auch Dir vielen Dank für die kontinuierliche Verbesserung der Kategorien. Traurige Tatsache: Der abgebildete Farmer David Brandt ist letztes Jahr bei einem Autounfall ums Leben gekommen. Location-Präzisierungen

Bist ja ganz schön fleißig mit dieser Sache (auch?) bei meinen vielen Bildern. Aber wahrscheinlich werkelt da ein Bot? Was bringt das eigentlich, gut für irgendwelche Auswertungen? Und komnt der Ursprung von der (gar nicht so verbreiteten/genutzten, wenn man die Größe von Commons bedenkt) Hochladeapp? Vielleicht könnte man dann direkt dort Anregungen einbringen. Noch gar nicht so lange her, da kam sie mit Erstellungs- und Bearbeitungsdatum schwer durcheinander... --Subbass1 (talk) 18:52, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

• Lieber Subbass1, vielen Dank für Deine Nachricht. Zuerst einmal ein großes Dankeschön für Deine dokumentarische Arbeit des Fotografierens vieler Kirchen, besonders der kleinen, hübschen Dorfkirchen in Mittel- und Süddeutschland. Du leistest damit einen wertvollen Beitrag für die Wikipedia und deren Medienarchiv Commons. Die Pflegearbeiten zur Präzisierung der Standorte und damit der Kategorien sind insofern sinnvoll, damit die entsprechenden Hauptkategorien [[Category:Germany photographs taken on xxx]] nicht mehr so überfüllt und übersichtlicher erscheinen. Ich habe mir also vorgenommen, diese arbeitsintensive Aufgabe zu erledigen, aber dank des Tools VisualFileChange ist es viel einfacher, als es aussieht. In Bezug auf die mobile Commons-App muss ich Dir Recht geben: Wenn es eine Möglichkeit gäbe, das Bundesland schon beim Upload festzulegen, wäre das eine große Hilfe. Dann müsste nur noch die entsprechende Datumskategorie für das jeweilige Bundesland, z.B. [[Category:Thuringia photographs taken on xxx]], angelegt werden. Allerdings habe ich keine Erfahrung mit der App und kenne daher ihre Stärken und Schwächen nicht. Falls es für den Parameter location=xxx keine Möglichkeit der Präzisierung gibt, könnte man den Verbesserungsvorschlag evtl. auf der Wikipedia-Seite für technische Wünsche vorbringen. Ich bin übrigens kein Bot und betreibe auch keinen, sondern bin ein leibhaftiger Wikipedianer, der alles von Hand erledigt :) Bis dahin, alles Gute und weiter so mit der großartigen Dokumentation deutscher Kirchen! • Hallo, danke, interessant. Das Lob hört man gern, immerhin muss ich mir die meisten (kleineren) Kirchen aufschließen lassen, was bedeutet, erstmal herumfragen zu müssen, wer einen Schlüssel haben könnte. Klappt aber meist alles erstaunlich gut. Dafür habe ich dann leider immer viel zu wenig Zeit und gehe nur routiniert einmal im Kreis, kein Vergleich zB mit dem Kollegen von kirchen-online.com. Aber dafür sind dann auch kleinere Kirchen (einfach) dokumentiert (und die Orgeln vorgestellt). Und diese Kulturdenkmäler sind es auf jeden Fall wert, ganz abgesehen davon, dass Knippsen nichts gegen das Erhalten ist. Wird aber (bzw. ist schon) leider nun deutlich weniger. Dafür finde ich immer mal wieder noch nicht Hochgeladenes oder bei WP Verwurstetes der letzten zwei Jahre. Werde die Location-Sache vielleicht mal bei den Entwicklern der App ansprechen. Bin auf jeden Fall froh, dass es sie gibt, wenn ich immer erst auf PC verschieben müsste, wäre mir das definitiv zu viel Aufwand und ich würde wohl gar nicht mehr fotografieren. Interessant bei WP und Commons ist jedenfalls, dass es quasi für alles Spezialisten und/oder Interessierte gibt. In diesem Sinne: weiter so :). Gruß, --Subbass1 (talk) 21:38, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

• Vielen Dank für Deine schnelle Antwort, Subbass1. Es ist toll, dass Du Dir die Arbeit machst und keine Mühe scheust, jeweils den Verantwortlichen zu suchen, der die Kirche öffnet. Das Innenleben abzubilden hat einen hohen enzyklopädischen Wert für Wikipedia. Viele Benutzer, mich eingeschlossen, wollen vor allem eine schöne Außenansicht fotografieren. Also bitte weitermachen mit der enthusiastischen Dokumentation des Kircheninneren. Es ist eine gute Idee, sich direkt mit den Entwicklern der App in Verbindung zu setzen, um auf das bestehende Defizit hinzuweisen. In der Zwischenzeit werde ich mich weiter um die Präzisierung der location-Parameter kümmern :) Übrigens ist es sehr gut, dass Deine Fotos alle georeferenziert sind, denn zur eigenen Sicherheit überprüfe ich bei fast jeder Fotoserie im Nachhinein noch einmal, ob eine Kirche tatsächlich in Thüringen, Sachsen oder Bayern steht. Gerade in Grenzregionen macht das Sinn. Bisher sind mir aber noch keine Fehler aufgefallen. Jetzt muss ich Dir doch den Vorwurf machen, dass Du mich unter Stress setzt, längst vergessene und hiermit wieder auftauchende Kirchen/Orgeln doch noch dem Organ index einzuverleiben... Danke auch für die Datumskorrekturen, das war ein ärgerlicher Bug der App, der dann aber abgestellt wurde (da wurde Erstellungs- und Googlebearbeitungsdatum verwechselt), ich war schlicht zu faul gewesen... • Lieber Subbass1, Du brauchst Dich nicht unnötig zu stressen, weil ich mit der Beseitigung alter Fehler etwas in Erinnerung rufe ;) Du hast damals gewissenhaft gearbeitet, Dich auf die Zuverlässigkeit der Commons-App verlassen und kannst nichts dafür, dass sie das Erstellungsdatum nicht erkannt hat. Ich mache diese Arbeit gerne in meiner Freizeit, also kein Problem :) Umso besser, dass dieser Fehler nun behoben ist und nicht mehr vorkommt. • War ja ein Smiley mitgedacht... Hauptzweck waren ja Orgeleinträge im Organ index, aber so manche Fotos habe ich dann schlicht vergessen, ganz gut, dass sie so wieder in Erinnerung kommen. Und bei den Datumsdiskrepanzen waren es oft nur Tage oder Wochen, aber trotzdem doof. Ich schätze, mich betraf das einige Monate, bis es dann (auf meine Anregung) gefixed wurde. • Ja klar, definitiv gut, dass ich so wieder darauf aufmerksam werde, auch wenn es dann nochmals dauern kann. Denn durchaus nicht für alle Kirchen gibt es ja schon Wikipedia-Einträge. Ja, der Organ index hat mittlerweile eine ganz akzeptable Größe erreicht, und das mit nur vergleichsweise wenigen "Zuträgern". Die sind aber umso eifriger, z.B. hat ein junger finnischer Kollege binnen kurzer Zeit mittlerweile 1000 finnische Orgeln (oft mit vielen Vorgängerinstrumenten) alleine eingetragen, und das auch noch per komplizierter deutscher Fremdsprache... • Vielen Dank für Deine Nachricht, Ymblanter. Zunächst einmal meinen Dank für die guten Aufnahmen der sächsisch-anhaltischen Stadt Halberstadt im Harz. Die Präzisierung durch die Verschiebung in die detailliertere Kategorie [[Category:Saxony-Anhalt photographs taken on 2021-08-18]] hat den Zweck, die Datumshauptkategorie [[Category:Germany photographs taken on 2021-08-18]] übersichtlicher und aufgeräumter zu gestalten. Insofern denke ich, dass diese Wartungsarbeit im Einklang mit den Regeln des Gemeinschaftsprojektes Commons steht. Mein Ziel ist also zu verbessern, zu helfen. Selbstverständlich steht es Dir frei, die vorgenommene Wartung wieder rückgängig zu machen und die Bilder wieder in die Hauptkategorie Germany photographs taken on 2021-08-18 zurück zu verschieben. Gerne werde ich aber Deinen Einwand berücksichtigen und Deine Aufnahmen bei zukünftigen Kategorisierungen nach Möglichkeit von der Wartung ausschließen. • Thank you for this important discussion link, Ymblanter. It is a complex topic. Regarding the city categories like [[Category:Photographs of Germany by date by city]], I agree that these are superfluous, especially for small cities. In our case, the subcategories State by date, such as Photographs of Saxony-Anhalt by date, I think they make sense. Often pictures are predefined in such categories, using templates like {{Taken on}} or {{taken in}}. But fortunately all photos, also the Halberstadt shots, are included in a separate monthly category like August 2021 in Saxony-Anhalt, which gives reusers the possibility to get a complete overview. Even though I am a little uncertain now, I'm grateful for your message. Your mentioned discussion is a valuable impulse for future decisions to avoid over-categorization. If I may speak for myself, I always feel the need to clean up and bring order to Commons. Similar to a household, order provides clarity. But in some cases, too much order can be counterproductive.
