Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

Hi PsamatheM, would you mind replacing the file by its 60fps original version? The file size isn't really relevant on Wikimedia Commons, as lower-quality versions are automatically generated and are selectable from a menu in the built-in player (original file or re-compressed 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, 240p, 180p, 160p, 120p versions). @ToBeFree: I tried to upload the 60 fps version many many times originally and it kept failing at the "Publishing" stage i.e. uploaded OK, Description, Caption, Categories put in fine then "Publishing" for an age before failing. Tried over a couple of weeks at different times always the same - so eventually created the 30 fps which uploaded ok. I assume the failure was due to some copy process timing out (or server processing time limit) but that's a guess. Tried asking for help in Village Pump but no suggestions. Happy to put 60 fps webm on a (my own) web server if somebody else has some different way to upload it. (It was on my server but taken down now as nobody wanted it). If you (or anybody) has alternative upload means let me know and I'll re-generate 60 fps version and post on public area of my web server. Let me know. PsamatheM (talk) 18:21, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

@ToBeFree: If you want it for other use then the webm is actually created from an mp4. I have better mp4's than on my personal web site (which are built for web publishing) and happy to provide either/both best webm and/or best mp4 version under same CC BY-SA 4.0 license (every compression/conversion reduces quality). Nice to have the Commons version at 60 fps if you (or anybody) know of a way.PsamatheM (talk) 18:27, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

@ToBeFree: I'll upload it to my personal website and put a link up here (but it'll be tomorrow) and reply here with link (as once you've downloaded it I'll delete it off my server and if anybody else downloads it fine, it's released under CC BY-SA 4.0 and my only reason for webm is Commons format requirements). I transcoded the mp4 to webm using Handbrake (same as I then did to create the 30 fps one which works fine). It was not the Commons transcodes that were failing but the copy temporary upload to "published" i.e. the "Publishing" stage. If you want the best quality MP4 it's available from https://psamathe.net/temp_images/2021-11/02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.mp4. The 60 fps uploaded webm is also at https://psamathe.net/temp_images/2021-11/02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.webm. Thanks again :) I've downloaded the MP4 now; feel free to remove the file from the server again. I'm now testing multiple encoding options in parallel, with highest CPU settings, overnight. When I have a good result, I'll overwrite the Commons file first, then revert myself if the result has unexpected problems, and I'd also be fine with you reverting me. @ToBeFree: The one up on Commons now is the 60 fps version which seems fine (Chunked Upload worked this time uploading new version). The latest version was created with Handbrake with high quality settings. That said, watching the video I can't tell quality difference (mp4 to 60 fps webm). yeah, my current AV1 encoding process is mostly an experiment with the new codec. It may be somehow worth it, theoretically, in the long term (even higher fidelity to the original at the same filesize). @ToBeFree: Unsure what benefit the version you have uploaded has but it's over 4 times the size. Quality appears identical so only difference seems your upload is much much bigger (On my Mac with good internet connection (fibre) I notice a significant delay starting playing plus pauses and jumps, bits of video skipped none of which happen on the 60 fps upload I did. Without any apparent advantage is it best to revert back to the much smaller 60 fps version? Technical users might spot the reasons and appreciate that there are earlier version but many will just see poor performance viewing, etc. PsamatheM (talk) 12:59, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Sure; it was probably mostly an experiment. But please wait a moment before reverting, as I think we've found a bug in the thumbnail generator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T296562 – we may want to wait for the developers to have a look at this, possibly on Monday, before reverting. Oh, you can see them? Okay, this is a very interesting case. I can't see them from my mobile connection nor my desktop connection, and trying to save the page in the Web Archive also results in an error, so it's at least not a block on my IP address. @ToBeFree: Thinking a bit, it might be me who has a "caching issue". I don't know how thumbnails are stored but from looking at the page html, it looks like the previous 2 uploads' thumbnails have been moved to an "archive" directory so my displayed thumbnail for the new upload might be the cached version of the previous upload. If this is the case it might be an issue anyway, not in this case as the video content is the same but if the video had been trimmed or colour graded or something more significant then using the local cached version of the previous upload would be based on the wrong video. Of course I might have completely misunderstood what is going on (I never looked at the html before the current upload) PsamatheM (talk) 13:29, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Ah, that may well be. I hadn't thought about this possibility, but it seems plausible exactly in the way you describe. Ah, you're now seeing what I saw all the time :) I'm really interested in the developers' answer to the bug report. The error message text ("Too many requests") doesn't exactly sound like an encoding issue, but I suspect it does have something to do with the file size or the codec. Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

• October 1 – October 9: Vote for election committee (ideally comprised of three members)

• November 10 – December 10: Elections
• December 15: Results announced

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

This year marks the sixth iteration of our beloved "Most Memorable Shot" tradition, and we're excited to see what everyone has to share.
