Hi[edit]

Hi Odder,

Is there anything like User:AlexNewArtBot here on commons where I can follow and watch those new uploaded images I want? Jaqeli (talk) 11:48, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: OgreBot does exactly that; see User:OgreBot/gallery for tips on how to configure it to output files that you are interested in. odder (talk) 12:09, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't really understand what should I do to watchlist them. For example if I want to get new picture updates from Category:History of Georgia what exactly should I do? Jaqeli (talk) 12:44, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: See this edit I made for you. Now you'd need to add User:Jaqeli/Georgia to your watchlist, and OgreBot will update this page every day with new images uploaded under the category tree for Category:History of Georgia. You might want to tweak the settings a bit; see the top of that page for exact instructions, and have a look at the source code to see how other people did that for categorieis they are interested in. odder (talk) 12:56, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And what should I do with that red link? Should I create that page? And how do I add all other categories I am interested in? Jaqeli (talk) 13:05, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: Just have a look at the instructions and how other people did that, please. That's the way I learnt it, too. odder (talk) 13:13, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot edit that page. I want instead of that category there to be changed with Category:Tbilisi and Georgia. Jaqeli (talk) 13:36, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: I fixed it for you this time, but please request any changes on the talk page in the future. Thanks. odder (talk) 13:53, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. As I understand that red link will automatically be changed after the images will be added? Jaqeli (talk) 14:07, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: The bot will create the page, yes. odder (talk) 14:22, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Jaqeli (talk) 14:25, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi odder, that page was updated with new images but it is very strange that none of those pictures have any connection with Tbilisi or Georgia and can you please if you know what is wrong with it? Jaqeli (talk) 19:31, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: Just follow the category tree. All those files are in categories which are subcategories to Category:Georgia or Category:Tbilisi. odder (talk) 19:44, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
None of those pictures even match to those categories or subcategories. For example, what does this have to do with Georgia or Tbilisi or its subcategories? Jaqeli (talk) 20:03, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have no time to troubleshoot this for your at this time, but I'm quite convinced Magog the Ogre would be able to dig up some logs to explain how that file got onto your page. odder (talk) 20:54, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Georgia => Category:History of Georgia => Category:Colchis => Category:Golden Fleece => Category:Order of the Golden Fleece => Category:Knights of the Golden Fleece => Category:Knights of the Golden Fleece (19th century) => Category:Wilhelm I of Germany => Category:Things named after William I, German Emperor => Category:Churches named after William I, German Emperor => Category:Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche => File:Berlin-Charlottenburg, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church .JPG. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:58, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Does it go that deep? May I ask to add some other categories than? Jaqeli (talk) 21:46, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: Yes; please go to the talk page so Magog can directly implement your wishes :-) odder (talk) 21:54, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi odder, do you know by chance in what time would my gallery page get archived? It will get more and more hard to load a page with that amount of images and maybe you know how to make it archived automatically? Jaqeli (talk) 05:19, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: It won't get archived unless you set DAYS_PER_GALLERY (currently I set NO_SUBPAGE for you). It's all mentioned in the instructions at the top of User:OgreBot/gallery. odder (talk) 08:25, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please set the automatic archive on 7 days? Jaqeli (talk) 11:14, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: I just set DAYS_PER_GALLERY to 7. odder (talk) 11:38, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Odder. Jaqeli (talk) 11:55, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi odder, my page was archived well but do you know by chance why it wasn't updated with the pictures of 8th march? Today is 9th but no updates from 8th march there. Jaqeli (talk) 09:53, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Magog the Ogre Maybe you could help or know why my page was not updated today? Jaqeli (talk) 18:49, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: No, I don't know. odder (talk) 10:07, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No updates even for today. There's definitely something wrong. Can you please odder help? Jaqeli (talk) 06:49, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: I am sorry, but I don't know why the bot stopped updating your page. Pinging @Magog the Ogre again so he can have a look at it. odder (talk) 08:24, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: - please place your questions at User talk:OgreBot/gallery, as odder has already requested you do. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:17, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Images appearing on the English Wikipedia's main page[edit]

I just unprotected the file. I hope you're fine with it, @David Levy. odder (talk) 12:42, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please elaborate on your summary — "no need for protection". (I need to ensure that a misunderstanding hasn't occurred.) Thanks! —David Levy 21:37, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@David Levy: Sure! There was no need to protect the file, as it was already protected by the means of being included in a page with cascade protection set to be active. odder (talk) 22:23, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, which page do you mean? Thanks again! —David Levy 01:46, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@David Levy: Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/en. odder (talk) 08:29, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping that was what you meant. (Thanks very much for confirming it.) I asked because some administrators (primarily at the English Wikipedia) have mistakenly assumed that the cascading protection of en:Main Page extends to Commons images.
For that reason (among others, including simple forgetfulness), unprotected images keep turning up on that page, particularly in the In the news section (the only one in which images are routinely transcluded with little or no advance planning and for no predetermined duration). Sometimes, vandals notice and replace the Commons files with arbitrary imagery (such as pornography).
This is why Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/en was created — for instances in which admins fail to either upload a local copy or ensure that the image is protected at Commons. As a fallback, it's helpful, but it isn't perfect. The page is populated by KrinkleBot, which can take anywhere from minutes to hours (and sometimes fails entirely).
Last month, a Wikipedia administrator transcluded the unprotected file Philip Seymour Hoffman 2011.jpg. KrinkleBot took about 12.5 hours to add it to Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/en. Fortunately, I caught the problem after about an hour and protected the image at Commons before vandals got to it.
But then Russavia unprotected the file, noting only that "indefinite protection is way too long". Thankfully, the cascading protection had taken effect less than an hour earlier, and I'm trying to determine whether Russavia was aware of that (or mistakenly believed that the English Wikipedia's cascading protection was sufficient).
As I explained to Russavia last month, when I protect such an image, I routinely return to unprotect it shortly after it leaves the English Wikipedia's main page. When KrinkleBot functions properly, the file is cascade-protected at Commons anyway, so little or no additional protection occurs. (In many cases, I unprotect the images before KrinkleBot updates the list to remove the cascading protection.)
When I manually protected File:Vladimir Putin 12015.jpg, the cascading protection did not yet exist. As I noted above, I'm glad that you observed it before terminating the manual protection. This approach generally causes no harm, but it does have a potential detriment: From time to time, an image in the English Wikipedia's In the news section is removed and restored a short time later (typically when a newly added blurb is pulled due to problems). In some instances, KrinkleBot performs an update during the brief gap in the image's appearance (resulting in its removal from Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/en). So when an admin (who typically assumes that the image is still protected) performs the reversion, the image returns to the main page without the cascading protection in place (and it might be many hours before it takes effect again). If the image is manually protected, this isn't an issue.
My apologies for typing such a long message. Thanks again! —David Levy 10:16, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I mentioned above that the problem arises most often at the In the news section, but it just occurred at the From today's featured article section (where an admin decided to switch from an image's uncropped version to its cropped version, thereby inserting File:Jimi Hendrix thumbnail.jpg without protection). So I've protected the file at Commons (but because it's guaranteed to leave the main page at the end of the day, I've set the protection to expire then).
Incidentally, I always remind these administrators to upload local copies of images before transcluding them on the main page. This rarely seems to help much, as many of the admins forget again and others show up to make the same mistake. —David Levy 14:29, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

They are so rule-bound[edit]

They simply don't understand that the principle comes first, and from the principle that the rules are written (not the other way around). So forgetting the principle and just looking at the rules gives them security as they see that they are operating within the rules, their comfort space. All forest and trees stuff, and damn infuriating.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:44, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@billinghurst: … or else just saddening and depressing if we repeatedly have to deal with the same situations. I'm just so tired of explaining this again and again… :-( odder (talk) 17:21, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:Smoking Crack.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Odder,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

@André Costa (WMSE): No offense taken; my close was merely a procedural one and made as part of a wider push to reduce the backlog in bureaucrat tasks. I hope you'll be able to reach SpreadTheSign so that we can move forward with the project. odder (talk) 12:34, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Q[edit]

Hi odder,

How do I upload the image automatically with the help of Flickr bot? Do you know how that's done? Jaqeli (talk) 18:33, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: Sure! Just use this tool. odder (talk) 18:41, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot greatly helped :) Jaqeli (talk) 19:25, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Odder, the Flickr upload bot is no more working. Can you please check it yourself if it works? Or maybe you could fix it? Jaqeli (talk) 10:10, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: It doesn't work for me, either, and I'm not sure whether it will ever be back since its author (Bryan) is not active anymore. You can use Flickr2Commons in the meantime. odder (talk) 11:14, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's even better tool. Jaqeli (talk) 12:46, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Incompetent editing by a user[edit]

Hello odder,

Can you please help to resolve an ongoing problem with one user here File talk:Mkhedruli.svg.

The thing is that this user is continuously continuing to uglify the 3 Georgian letters in that illustration. He has no knowledge in Georgian, does not speak Georgian, nor he knows well the Georgian script and how the Georgian letters are written and me, who is a native Georgian and knows everything in the subject is lecturing me how those letters are actually written. This is getting ridiculous with that user already and pretty much disturbing. I've presented him the original link of the Georgian ministry of education which clearly shows how those 3 Georgian letters are written but still he is reverting the image changes back to that version which has nothing to do with the original Georgian letters. Please do everything possible for solving that dispute with that user as it is getting more and more problematic. Thank you. Jaqeli (talk) 22:19, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: I had a look at that discussion, and cannot see anything wrong with the way it was handled. Granted, the language used by both you and @Kwamikagami was a bit harsh at times, but it's nothing I haven't seen before. Just keep on discussing the issue, preferably by referring to notable sources, and eventually you'll be able to reach a consensus, I'm sure. odder (talk) 07:58, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am showing him this to see the differences but he clearly refuses to see them. For a foreign eye it may seem the same but in reality they are not. The Georgian letters are very complex and everything in writing of them are very important. Odder, for example how do you see that image I've just posted? The above image shows how it should be and is a screen-grab from the Georgian ministry of education and the second one is a version of the user Kwamikagami who says that the he made those 3 letters just like how the ministry says but in reality he has not and those 3 letters are not written like the ministry says. Jaqeli (talk) 12:04, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: While I can clearly see a difference between the circled letters on the two images, I have zero knowledge about Georgian alphabet and Georgian letters. I can only hope you and @Kwamikagami will be able to reach a consensus satisfying both parties. I trust that you'll be able to work on this together in good spirit and atmosphere. odder (talk) 19:26, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The problem here is that Jaqeli provided a very nice source which I used, but which he apparently hasn't actually watched himself. I (and others) have had this kind of dispute with him before; usually it takes weeks or even months of petty bickering over the nature of reality before he admits that he was wrong all along. I'm tired of it, and so would rather remove the image from all articles that use it than to edit-war over it or put in the time required to debate it. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:13, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Odder, that incompetent editing is back. I cannot understand his delusional obstinacy. He still believes that those letters are written the same way on that image I've linked to show the differences. He seriously has a visual problems if he really thinks that those letters are the same on those two images but I cannot help to make him understand that. Please do everything possible for avoiding such an incompetent editing as he is clearly making those Georgian letters ugly in purpose. He just does not want to listen and to correct those mistakes on those 3 letters. He just does not want to see that they are written differently and continues to ridicule the entire discussion process. I hope you would be able to find some solution for this because I cannot any more have that discussion with him as he clearly does not want to listen and see those mistakes those 3 letters have in writing. Jaqeli (talk) 09:24, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: As I wrote above, I have zero knowledge about Georgian alphabet and Georgian calligraphy. I have, however, a lot of experience in discussing issues on various Wikimedia projects, and can clearly see that the way you are currently discussing this issue leads nowhere but to conflict. I have no doubt in my mind that both you and @Kwamikagami mean nothing but good with your contributions here on Commons and elsewhere, and I would please, please ask you to try to reach some consensus in a friendly, polite and considerate manner. We are all here to bring free knowledge to others, but it cannot be done if we keep fighting one another. odder (talk) 12:43, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am a native Georgian and I am telling him who is not a native Georgian, speaks no Georgian, cannot write Georgian and has no knowledge in Georgian that those 3 Georgian letters are written wrong. But no, he does not want to understand that and he is lecturing me a native Georgian that I am wrong. Now, how can I have a discussion with such ridiculous attitude that user has? I have asked him million times already that those 3 letters are written wrong but he just does not want to understand that. May I ask you as an admin. Who is more knowledgeable in this matter? A native Georgian (me) who speaks, writes and knows everything of Georgian language, writing system, calligraphy etc. or that user who does not speak it, cannot write it and has no knowledge in it? It is his delusional obstinacy that is making it impossible to reach any consensus with him. I just don't understand this any more. Jaqeli (talk) 12:55, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: I understand where you're coming from on this issue, and I understand that you might feel a little bit irritated by how this discussion is developing. We all get a little nervous if things do not go as planned :-) I don't think there is any need to get too upset about this. I suggest that you take a break from this issue and focus on something else for a while; maybe it will allow you to have a fresh look. When you do decide to go back to the problem at hand, please try to refer to sources and facts rather than feelings. If you still will not be able to reach consensus with @Kwamikagami by then, then the only solution that I can think of is to create two different files and allow Wikipedias to decide which one they want to use by themselves rather than decide it here on Commons. odder (talk) 22:20, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What's so odd about this is that the change he's complaining most about is from the source he provided. He even did a screen capture that shows I'm right. It's like arguing with someone over which direction "up" is. He originally complained about twice the number of changes, claiming that Georgians never wrote that way, only to admit that he was wrong about half of them. I know he's wrong about the main remaining one, and from what I can see in various sources, it would appear he's wrong about the rest as well. I've defended Jaqeli when others have gotten upset with him for nonsensical arguments like this, but it is getting tiresome. Kwamikagami (talk) 06:09, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Odder, are you telling me that I am not that knowledgeable to tell which Georgian letter is right or wrong? The user above is vandalising those 3 letters and I should not care? He is that delusional that he even stated above that on that screen capture which I've posted showed he is right. Now how can I talk to such user or discuss anything anymore? He is clearly lying or has serious visual problems with eyes. He has no understanding of Georgian and he should stop his vandalous editing as soon as possible. I have given him the source upon what he should base his corrections but no he clearly does not want to and even claims that he did it all by that source and this is me who cannot clearly see a source. Now how can I deal with that kind of cynicism from his side? Jaqeli (talk) 08:45, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli and Kwamikagami: Calm down, guys. If you do have to argue, don't do it from Odder's talk page. But I highly recommend Odder's suggestion of creating two different files. This seems to have become a revert war. (Sorry, Odder, for barging in... :) Best regards,—Clockery Fairfeld who, me? 10:16, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of arms of Malaysia[edit]

Hi Odder, can you delete this file. The user who uploading it keep adding this file on the coat of arms article even after been told. The reason is according to the Malaysian law, Malaysian copyright file would be free after 50 years. The file created on 1963 but the last modified happens on 1965, so based on a calculation, it will be free from any copyright in the next year (2015). Review[edit]

Hi odder,

Can you please review this image? I think the bot got stuck to review it. Jaqeli (talk) 10:19, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: The problem with that file is that it's basically a derivative work of the portrait, and unless we know that the portrait is released under CC BY-SA or else in the public domain, we cannot host that picture on Commons. Do you happen to know who created the portrait, and if so, whether it's free? odder (talk) 13:00, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think that image should have been sold at the dry market in Tbilisi. It's a place of the antiquity and former Soviet things like that and are sold there. Unfortunately I don't know who is or was the author but I think it should be old enough but how old I don't know. Many painted Stalin in the past in that very pattern. Do you think we cannot keep the image? Jaqeli (talk) 13:23, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: In general, works created by Soviet artists are free only after 70 years after their death (see Commons:Copyright tags for more information); as we cannot determine who was the author, or even what country they were a citizen of, I believe we cannot keep the file due to our precautionary principle. I'm intending to delete it if you agree — sorry about that :-( odder (talk) 13:45, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Of course I agree as no information is given or known concerning its author or time of its creation so please do so. Jaqeli (talk) 14:54, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: Thanks, I have now deleted the file. Enjoy the rest of your evening :-) odder (talk) 18:45, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

Please, help me. Can i revert original images, removed by Dennis? You talked here about this (here) As i cen see Commons:OVERWRITE tell me that i should. But he tretened me, please look at this, help me, i dont understand, we must not overwrite images, i think? Help me please. --Anastan (talk) 22:55, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I asked a question here, and one person tell me that we should not overwrite images. (here) --Anastan (talk) 22:59, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Anastan: This indeed is true, but we also shouldn't engage in edit wars. While I don't personally like the behaviour that Dennis has shown, I also know that he means nothing but good. I suggest that you and other Serbian editors discuss the situation on the appropriate talk pages; it is always possible to reach some sort of consensus by discussing the issue at hand. odder (talk) 07:51, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are telling me to stop edit wars? I didnt start it, but current version is not regular one. I am asking for you to tell dennis to stop wit hedit war, as he moved current version after years in peace. Please, do that, so we can have peace, as it was befoure. --Anastan (talk) 12:44, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Anastan: I'm asking you to refrain from taking part in edit wars, as this is a way that generally leads nowhere but to conflict. It's much better to discuss controversial issues on talk pages, no matter who started the edit war; every version is wrong. odder (talk) 14:03, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, viki have rules for everything i say... I will talk on page then --Anastan (talk) 19:40, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Portrety wyborcze plakaty itp[edit]

Witam! Lukasz2 (talk) 10:33, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Podczas ostatnich wyborów prezydenckich wszystkie komitety tak zrobiły, dzięki czemu mamy w Wikipedii wspaniałe zdjęcia prezydenta (wtedy kandydata) Bronisława Komorowskiego, Grzegorza Napieralskiego, Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, Waldemara Pawlaka i innych. W takiej sytuacji zysk jest obopólny — komitety i kandydaci korzystają z dobrej formy promocji (w postaci Wikipedii), a my mamy wspaniałe fotografie na wolnej licencji. odder (talk) 11:46, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

-- Paweł Ruminkiewicz (talk) 17:01, 14 May 2014 (UTC) PS.

Podpis możesz zmienić w swoich preferencjach. odder (talk) 17:10, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Need suppression of a name and external links due to COM:IDENT from the revision histories. Jee 13:06, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jkadavoor: The only policy that we take into consideration when doing suppressions is the Oversight policy; COM:IDENT, while important on a daily basis, is not in itself a reason for performing suppressions. I understand that you think the real name of the person who was photographed was revealed without their knowledge or consent, but as far as I am aware, @Leucosticte is who they claim to be. With that in mind, I'd only suppress the page revisions and edit summaries that reveal that real name upon a request from the person affected. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and enjoy your evening! odder (talk) 13:23, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder sometimes how Commons could build up a collection of useful images of people unless it were to accept at face value people's assertions about consent, authorship, etc. It's not like this is Citizendium, where users have to present proof of identity before contributing.
