WLM templates in nl.wiki

Hi, I couldn't understand how do you add multiple images of the same monument using WLM templates in nl.wiki. For example how do you add second picture of "Boerderij met rieten wolfdak" to this list nl:Lijst van rijksmonumenten in Harmelen? --WikedKentaur (talk) 06:15, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

We have one picture per monument. We don't want to add multiple images in the list. Multichill (talk) 20:15, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
Then how do you keep track of these pictures. How does the jury find these pictures? --WikedKentaur (talk) 07:59, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, missed your reply. Last year the jury used Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2010. This year the juries can use Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 intersected with the local monuments category. Multichill (talk) 07:58, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Wouldn't it be simpler to have separete categories for each country like Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in Estonia and so on? — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikedKentaur (talk • contribs) 10:48, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
That's also a possibility I thought about, but I'm a bit reluctant about that. We'll just put all the images in two categories: One for all images and one per country. That makes it easier for everyone. Multichill (talk) 09:38, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
Do you have a gallery page (on Commons) for all the images of the same monument? For example, is there a gallery of the images that are tagged as {{Rijksmonument|20810}}? --WikedKentaur (talk) 19:49, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Some monuments have their own category or galleries. Mostly monuments with lots of images, see for example Category:Vleeshal Haarlem. Multichill (talk) 07:58, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Restore

Please File:Penally Abbey5.jpg See http://www.flickr.com/photos/simonstanford/4417335110/in/set-72157623579161014. Treatment of users on here is worse than wikipedia. What aggravated me was the "pay attention to copyright" patronising warning when I had certainly paid attention to it by requesting the batch was all changed. Given my other uploads I'd have thought somebody would have seen what happened. Then to make it worse people feel the necessity to send silly civil warnings as if that's going to change the fact they deleted a fine image and it was clearly part of a bunch.Blofeld Dr. (talk) 16:12, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm no longer going to contribute here given the recent stubborness and hounding.Blofeld Dr. (talk) 16:32, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Thankyou. Sorry for seeming rude today, I am normally very polite but I am known for my short temper. It was the PAY ATTENTION TO COPYRIGHT warning and then the civil hounding that got to me. I had specifically requested those images in good faith and uploaded them believing they were all fine. I should have reacted more calmly I guess but the fact the image was deleted and then the admin would not restore it was not what I'd have expected on here. I'd rather upload my images here to share with other wikipedias but if I am to be fully civil on here I expect rather less patronising treatment from the admins. when I am working in good faith, Sorry, and thanks mate.Blofeld Dr. (talk) 16:46, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Out of line maybe but something needs to be done about the patronising PAY ATTENTION warnings to prolific image uploaders who are fully aware about it but occasionally things crop up. You don't get a word of thanks for your uploads and as soon as one is not right they scold you.. Blofeld Dr. (talk)

Categories for geograph.org.uk images

Hi, I noticed that a lot of geograph.org.uk images are without categories (eg: File:Pratt's Bottom Common - geograph.org.uk - 825424.jpg) and a lot of empty categories (Category:Pratt's Bottom) are waiting for these images. Was it an upload problem? Are you able to easily fix it? Thanks. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 07:17, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Basilicofresco, thanks for the reminder. We have to think about next steps for the Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph. Multichill (talk) 08:43, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes- I have being doing a few squares by hand- and ultimately they will all need checking. I think we were reasonably happy with the subject driven bot tag->cat conversions, it is the geographically based ones that went awry. Though it is optional, many district councils and unitaries are divided into civil parishes, so if the database exists- I suggest we can do a cascading approach. If parished we can cat into Someplace (civil parish), and if it is not parished move up to Someplace (district), which will lead to the ceremonial county. That moves us forward, and does not overwhelm existing carefully honed category trees. Someplace(civil parish) will be a subcat of Someplace(district). We can then invite existing en:Wikiproject groups to merge these cats into the existing trees. But in the meantime, the images will be easier to search for. --ClemRutter (talk) 13:30, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

No "wow" factor. Multichill (talk) 08:43, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, noticed this thread at the pump: Commons:Village pump#Expansion depth limit exceeded. The nested transclusions are causing serious problems for that particular creator template. This is partly because {{Other date}} uses switches for the various translations, and that will get worse as more are added. Would it be possible to get i18n done for that template?--Nilfanion (talk) 10:18, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Data base in Spanish

Hi! We are working on the lists in Spanish Wikipedia.

We have used the template es:Plantilla:Fila BIC. At this moment we have only lists from Spain. The name for the data base is "nombrecoor", the id is "bic", the adress is "lugar", the municipality is "municipio", lat and lon are similar, image is "imagen", and we have several fields more as "fecha", "nombre" or "tipo". At this template there is a field called "tipobic". We have an M for the monuments, because this template is used also for Historical gardens, archeologic areas, etc. So, the bot must recognize this field and filter them.

In adition, I have a very important question. There are some monuments which don't have a BIC code and there are some regions that use their own identification code. At the list we should add both. I've think on adding an additional field called "id" where we could write these codes. Maybe, there will be some monuments without a "bic" but with an "id". Could a bot for the database or the contest recognize it when the field "bic" is empty?

And another question. If we make lists for other conuntries, could we use the same template? or will it be better to create a different one?

Thanks. If you don't understand any question or explanation, ask me please. Regards. --Millars (talk) 11:11, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Millars, sorry for the late response.
Ok, based on your information I can add Spain to the database.
The id question is a difficult one. Have to think about that.
For other countries it's better to create different templates to keep them apart. What country are you thinking about? Multichill (talk) 20:30, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Ok, did the first import step. It's probably better to format the date in iso format: YYYY-MM-DD. You can use a parser function in the row template to make it look pretty.
Not all pages seem to be in the right format, see for example es:Anexo:Bienes de interés cultural de la provincia de Palencia. Multichill (talk) 20:59, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. About a second id for some regions, you could talk about it in Berlin. I'll talk with Platonides about it. Some list for other countries could be translated into Spanish, e.g. Andorra, France, etc. (Andorra is very easy, in Catalan the list is already made and it isn't too large). We are thinking about changing the format for the date, but nothing sure. I don't know how to make them prettier, could you show me an example? We are working, maybe some lists aren't with the correct format at this moment, but they will be. Thanks. Regards. --Millars (talk) 21:50, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Images from the Geograph British Isles project

For me it makes no sense to have all the images there (more than one million) as uncategorized. There are two reasons for this:

  • a) There is already the hidden category Images from the Geograph British Isles project for every image and also the top category is a useful category to find the images
  • b) A lot of images are already categorized, nevertheless the image is still listed as uncategorized. (Example:File:Windlass VIC 32 - geograph.org.uk - 1580501.jpg)
  • Solution: Something bot-generated must happen to these files (and categories). Elsewise I expect for more than 1 million uncategorized files that they will remain there for 20 years as uncategorized files. Or simply "unhide" the hidden category Images from the Geograph British Isles project and create with a bot a new category for images with no more additional (new, user or bot created) category.

Best regards --Florentyna (talk) 10:53, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

For what its worth, my bot's been retaining the {{Uncategorized-Geograph}} when its added a basic location cat. The rationale there is to keep something for bot-tracking purposes (on assumption there may be future runs to get the Geograph subject added). Probably change that to another template, like {{Check categories-Geograph}} for instance.--Nilfanion (talk) 11:21, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Okay, so how one can initialize a bot
a) to give all Images from the Geograph British Isles project a category, to be not more listed as uncategorized
b) same for hidden Category:Images from Heinrich Böll Foundation (there only for images marked as uncategorized or without a visible category). All images should be finally in the category Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, where they already are due to the mentioned hidden category Images from Heinrich Böll Foundation.
Wouldn't it make sense to make some of the categories visible? Why it is a must, to leave some of the categories as hidden categories? --Florentyna (talk) 15:25, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Geograph is on my list together with https://simplegeo.com/ . Multichill (talk) 19:45, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Advice for prospective major uploaders

Hi,

I'm taking part in a workshop in June where I'll be explaining a bit about how Commons compares to other options for research organizations to open up their image collections for wide public use. One of the questions that they seem interested in is how batch uploading can work (I'm generally aware of how it works and where to make a request but never done it myself). I'm wondering if you could advise me on which are the best recent examples of this working in practice and whether there is anything under way or currently available to explain the process for (large) organizations that may want a member of their own staff to be responsible for the batch upload? I'm currently assuming that in practice we would advise them to just raise a request for volunteer support rather than attempting DIY. Cheers -- (talk) 13:21, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Gazeley Geograph images

Hi! One of your Geograph images added by GegraphBot for Gazeley in Suffolk is not taken in or of Gazeley. File:Suffolk_farmland_-_geograph.org.uk_-_42062.jpg I think the spot this picutre is taken in would either be in the parish of Higham or maybe Kentford. I think it should be moved to the catagory Higham, Forest Heath. Thanks! RE73 (talk) 07:22, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

further images of Earlham, St. Mary's Church?

I was wondering if you had any further images of the interior of Earlham, St. Mary's Church. I am trying to get an image of a Waller family memorial that exists near the altar. The image would have a shield like:

If you can help out, please send me a note at thom.waller@sympatico.ca

Thanks...
