User:BotMultichillT, Please link images for images marked with duplicate or badname

Hi Multichill, can you deactivate the user notification for images marked with badname or duplicate? Often user remove the categories or simply replace the whole page with Badname if they did a mistake in upload. The notification is not needed here i think. Thanks and regards, --Martin H. (talk) 11:56, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

That's bad behaviour. Users shouldn't remove that. Multichill (talk) 11:57, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
I know, but its very often. Upload image; uuups wrong filename; replace imagepage with badname. The image is categorized Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, BotMultichill should not pay attention to the image. The concret case was File:HH-Kleiner-Grasbook-quarter.png. --Martin H. (talk) 13:57, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
No, people just shouldn't do that. To often i see information getting lost in an image move. Multichill (talk) 21:25, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, i know. But that was not my question. A uncategorized notification for a speedy nominated image is not useful, no matter the uploader blanked the page, removed the categories or never gave categories to the image. He does well with marking the image with badname (instead of speedy, delete or asking at the administrators noticeboard), the please link images notification does not help him in any way. --Martin H. (talk) 21:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Incorrect about absence of categories?

I think all my uploads have categories, but the bot has told me 4 of them don't have categories. I know I have a lot to learn, so can you please tell me why this is happening? Thank you.Hisland7 (talk) 21:36, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

About absence of categories

Hello,
Your bot User:BotMultichillT notified me about uncategorized images uploaded by me. All three images have the „bad name” tag and qualifies to speedy deletion. Can you adjust the bot to ignore the tagged images? Thank you. --Turbojet (talk) 09:43, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

No. Don't blank pages to add bad name. Multichill (talk) 17:33, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Why not? There was a really typo. --Turbojet (talk) 22:35, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Don't trust Special:Statistics

Why is Special:Statistics wrong [1]? If the counter is wrong, it should be fixed. Ping me on answer. Platonides (talk) 14:18, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

There's always an error percentage in Special:Statistics. 0.1% error rate * 4M = 4000. Statistics were never meant to be exact. Recalculating doesn't have priority as far as i know. Multichill (talk) 14:22, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, a few days ago i uploaded a photo but i didn't know how and which category to classify to... i"ll be grateful if you could assist me. Thanx. Energidi (talk) 18:34, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

You can categorize the images like this. Multichill (talk) 21:38, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Category discussion notification Category:Chemistry (unsorted) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Uploading existing pictures

I'm not sure about the sense of uploading already existing pictures? For example File:Starr 041014-0401 Portulaca molokiniensis.jpg. It has bee uploaded with wrong name (it doesn't show this plant) and wrong category although this picture File:Molokini Aerial.jpg was already existed - by the way with correct name and categories. In additon it was also in use. As a kind of highlight, my uploadad picture has been marked as "duplicate" for deletion! I really would recommand that your bot should not upload already existing pictures. Regards, --Telim tor (talk) 08:31, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

A lot of the existing images were not properly sourced/licenced. I just uploaded all images with correct info. We'll only get around 600 dupes. Multichill (talk) 08:33, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
But you need to know that Forrest & Kim Starr are categorizing all their habitat pictures by latin plant names - regardless what the image shows! So the latin name of an image may also show another plant, an animal or an island - which might be very confusing. This leads e.g. to images of islands like File:Starr 050223-4258 Portulaca oleracea.jpg with cat category:Portulaca oleracea. And the correct named image with correct category (File:Mokolea Rock.jpg) shall be deleted as duplicate. I know that a bot cannot find out whether an already existing image is well categorized or not. So I will manually intervene when encountering wrongly uploaded pictures... Regards, --Telim tor (talk) 08:46, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Feel free to nominate any of the uploads as a dupe, just make sure the source info of the image is alright. Multichill (talk) 19:37, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill - please go easy on uploading these! Quite often, their photos don't actually show the species they are indexed under at the source website (something I noticed long ago). For example, well over half of the photos you have uploaded and placed in Category:Cupressus macrocarpa don't actually show Cupressus macrocarpa at all. There's no point in uploading them simply because they exist and are under a commons-compatible license; only upload the ones that fall within the Commons scope! - Thanks, MPF (talk) 02:03, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

I just finished uploading all images. Feel free to put them in better categories. Multichill (talk) 19:38, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

image not used?

All my images (or allmost all) on Commons are marked as 'not used on any page', while they are used in my Wikibook 'Klassieke_Mechanica' (nl). Why is this?
--Huibc (talk) 13:58, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

It only includes local usage here at Commons. You have to use the checkusage tool to see usage in all Wikimedia projects. Every image includes a link to this tool (top of the page). Multichill (talk) 17:52, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Salut Multichill, je suis nouveau je ne sais pas comment faire pour discuter et classer les images par catégories, comment faire pour classer les images? Merci

I brought this up a while back and thought you'd added it to your blacklist. Please make sure that your bots ignore images with SOlicense and undo the edits you've made to files containing it. Thanks.

I know you think categories shouldn't be added by templates, but our project would be way too complicated to manage if we didn't use templates to organise it. Your understanding is appreciated. --Swift (talk) 09:45, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey Multichill,
We would really appreciate it if you could get around to undoing those edits. Any chance you could give us an estimate on when that would happen? --Swift (talk) 08:46, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi Swift, i don't think this is the best aproach, but i removed the template from my list of templates to ignore. I'll compile you a list of images tagged with both SOlicense and Uncategorized (will put the list at Template:SOlicence/Uncategorized). Good luck with your project. Multichill (talk) 13:55, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, Multichill. Could you possibly run your bot on these files to remove the Uncategorized, those in Category:Chinese kanji stroke order to remove it from that category (populated by your bot a while back), and delete the category? That should clean up everything and would really help us. Cheers, --Swift (talk) 15:50, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Seeing how a) the ones you've already categorised contsitute a big problem for us to fix, b) we don't have approved bots, c) you do have a bot that already does categorisation work and d) this was originally your making, I'd like to ask you to help us out in clearing up this mess.
I know you're busy, but so are we. I'm more than happy to give you detailed descriptions of what needs to be done so that we can get this done quickly. Thanks, --Swift (talk) 07:12, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

I think your bot needs to distinguish between regulars and newcomers before leaving such a lengthy message on how to categorize images. For regulars, just a small note that an image uploaded by them is not categorized should be enough. Cheers --Deepak (talk) 02:50, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Image status

Hello Multichill, you put some templates on pictures I uploaded from en.wiki stating that the status of the images would not be clear. The images were marked as PD-Italy. Since they are from Italy, I guessed that if there is no longer a copyright in their state of origin, this would apply worldwide. Or is it possible that the images are protected e.g. in Germany even if they are no longer protected in Italy from which they originate? Greetings --Bjs (talk) 15:26, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

PD-Italy is not a valid template here. Please see the history and the talk page of the template. Multichill (talk) 10:03, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

categorizing images

I did not have much time. I would categorize images if the page gave the box for categories, which allows me to check if they exist. If the upload page does not provide this, then I take the time to upload and deal with categories later. Why does the upload page vary?143.167.96.216 08:38, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Strange, you're supposed to get the category box at upload. Which interface language do you use? Multichill (talk) 13:16, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Same topic, Multichill - you asked me to categorize Kepler_orbit.png. I do not recall getting the category box, but there was weird stuff at the bottom of the upload interface I didn't bother trying to understand. Since I would categorize the graphic as "when to roll a space telescope in solar orbit," but won't create that category, I don't know about complying with your polite request. You, at least, have a clue about existing categories. Please put the png in an existing category. Thank you. - Metarhyme (talk) 04:48, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the robo-note, Multichill. I guess I don't have the wiki-spirit. You guys have a system worked out for the non-compliant. Apply it. - Metarhyme (talk) 05:18, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

editing BotMovesToCommons

Mvg, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 11:44, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 13:09, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

How do I delete my own files?

Your robot sent me a message about some files I uploaded. Six of them I immediately linked to a wiki page (Circuit Total Limitation). The other five need to be deleted.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that YOU can do this, but how do _I_ do this to my own uploaded images?

Take a look at my gallery (http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?&wiki=commons.wikimedia.org&img_user_text=LP-mn), and you may see that the 6th through 10th images in the gallery have in their description something like "Needs to be Deleted". x or ×

No talk page hopping! Only bunnies are alowed to hop here ;-)

Hi Multichill - it's best (botanical recommended practice) to use the hybrid symbol × in hybrid plant names. The ICBN only recommends using x in situations where the × symbol isn't available (ref: Recommendation H.3A). Thanks for the lists! - MPF (talk) 23:10, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Forgot to mention - it is also a good idea to have category redirects from the x format to the × format (see e.g. Category:Tilia x euchlora). When I've moved x ones to × ones, I've always made the left-behind into a redirect. - MPF (talk) 23:14, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I wanted to ask you to remove my photos. Blocked it as it was possible, but again very please to be removed. Thank you very much --Kosioryt (talk) 16:29, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

At Commons we don't just remove image because the uploader requests it. You released the images if you want to get have them deleted: Open a deletion request. Multichill (talk) 10:57, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Request to restore deleted Image

Concerning the image Moritz_Ney_work.jpg deleted today, there is no copyright violation, because:

 1. The artist and author op the painting Moritz Ney selected his own work himself to publish as illustration for the article about himself;
 2. Moritz Ney sent a catalogue to the painter Jean-Marie Biwer and asked him to help publishing this picture on the Luxembourg Wikipedia;
 3. Moritz Ney owns the copyright on the photograph published in the catalogue, because he ordered and paid the photograph to have exclusive user right upon them;
 4. Jean-Marie Biwer asked for help on the Luxembourg Wikipedia;
 5. I offered him help and he sent me a first file scanned from the same catalogue;
 6. Because the scan was affected by Moiré-effect, Jean-Marie Biwer made a new photograph today and we replaced it online.

Now it was deleted.

I ask you:

 1. to put it back as it was.
 2. to reactivate the link on the Luxembourgish Wikipedia or to ask the admins of this wiki to do it.

Thank you very much in advance, --Art'n'go (talk) 17:24, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't know why you're leaving this message here. I asked the deleting admin to have a look at it. You should probably send permission to OTRS, see Commons:Email templates for examples. Multichill (talk) 17:45, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I saw your name related to this topic (but now I don't find it again). Thanks for forwarding it. --Art'n'go (talk) 18:19, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Request attended. Thanks for the warning. Anna (talk) 19:38, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Questions of Carn

If your bot add messages on my page - would you mind if he would delete his unactual messages? And - you shure he must have signature? It's quite annoying. Carn (talk) 09:39, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Nope, that's up to the user. Sure, why not. Would make this page a lot less crowded. Multichill (talk) 09:54, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

I noticed your post at the village pump. Not sure yet how to do that though, i will respond over there. Multichill (talk) 18:28, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Any way to check for unclosed tags?

For example: [2]. It happens a lot less to your bot than Filbot's. I've seen times when it would keep pasting the same template over and over again because it was inside a <gallery>. Not a big deal, just pointing it out because that's why images still find their way into Special:UncategorizedFiles. (BTW, I don't know if it's working for you, but I only see 35 images at a time on that page instead of 500. Weird.) Rocket000(talk) 03:19, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Hard to check, i would have to parse everything. My bot will not come into a loop because it has to be triggered by an upload or an edit (bot edits are ignored). Special:UncategorizedFiles is pretty weird, but shouldn't be to hard to clean out now. My bot works with an ignore list (source). If a template isn't on it it's assumed it adds a category and it's skipped. Multichill (talk) 08:06, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I figured it wouldn't be worth it anyway. I'm trying to see how clean I can get that page. It's amazing some of the stuff you run in to. (For example, I saw a user put on their image page. A completely honest good-faith edit too. ) Rocket000(talk) 04:19, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Spelling error in BotMultichill's work and suggestion

'Hoy there. I'm coming from File:Paaseieren.jpg this image and I saw that your bot's automatism writes transferred wrong, it is spelled transfered there. Since this is an automatism, I thought this might be interesting ;)
Furthermore, it seems to "translate" a link as wiki:link, which is fair enough anyway, but looks kinda funny on sentences which you often find in file descr.s. I'd suggest to change that into link, should be no problem since your bot already writes the language template :) •  Lirion (Λιριων, Лирион, ليريون) wtf?16:39, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing it out. I do remember noticing the spelling mistake, but forgot about it. My bot is a wrapper around Commonshelper run by Magnus Manske so i can't really fix these mistakes myself. Multichill (talk) 16:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
This has been fixed for a while now. Reporting a bug in 2009 on a file transferred in 2007 can do that to you. Check out some recent example. --Magnus Manske (talk) 18:57, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

OTRS question

Thank you for your input. I sent an email to an OTRS volunteer for permission for my file...do you know how long it takes for them to give permission? Cassiegz (talk)

Couple of days i guess, depends on how busy they are. Multichill (talk) 16:00, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Already added cat.

I had already added cat. to thoese two images how do I remove uncat. tag ?Yousaf465 (talk)

Looks that one of my bot already added some category suggestions. You can remove the template by clicking the Check them now! link. Multichill (talk) 15:58, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for helping with it.Do you also work on wikipedia ?Yousaf465 (talk)

Please link images

I just changed Please link images, cause it created no editable sections. But it needs a change of your bot too. You either have to subst Please link images or you have to add == {{Autotranslate|1={}|base=Please link images/heading}} == to the text inserted by your bot (and we remove the heading from Please link images). --Slomox (talk) 15:20, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok. Bot will subst the template (again). Multichill (talk) 15:57, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Before doing the next run of the bot with the modification, please replace the <h2> ... </h2> in Please link images with == ... ==. --Slomox (talk) 16:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Sure, but why did you use h2 in the first place? But runs once a day at 05:35 UTC (cronjob). Multichill (talk) 18:17, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Cause of the problem that template-included headings create edit links that let you edit the template instead of a section of your user talk. --Slomox (talk) 18:49, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
The first complaint about misleading edit links already arrived at Template talk:Please link images ;-) Could your bot replace all unsubsted instances of the template and subst them? I could do it too with my bot, but as your bot already works on "Please link images" it would be better if you could do it. --Slomox (talk) 10:31, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and your bot messages contain something like "*Image:Kniepergericht.jpg is uncategorized since 20 March 2009." Would be good, if we could make this localizable too. --Slomox (talk) 13:25, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

uncats

You have notified me that some recent images are uncatted. I've left them so pending identification, but should I tag them eg "beetle" or "butterfly" anyway? Jimfbleak (talk) 06:50, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

I am very pleased with your help, and I am so sorry that I found it so late!! However, I did as you mentioned. Thank you again for your kind help.--Ali nankali (talk) 19:05, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

It appears your bot counts this as a content category. Can you put Copyright by Wikimedia it on your list of templates to ignore? Thanks. Rocket000 (talk) 00:04, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Starr images II

Hi Multichill, why do you tag images that exist here since 2006 and have the old but valid (more free) PD licensing like File:Commelina benghalensis.jpg as duplicates, and not the ones that you recently uploaded (e.g. File:Starr 040410-0079 Commelina benghalensis.jpg, CC-by-3.0)? I see that this affects more than 50 files at the moment. -- \mu/ 20:15, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Because i know the images which i uploaded are properly sourced and licensed. Multichill (talk) 20:25, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
This sounds like Flickr-change-of-license. I guess it's best to discuss the issue together with other users; [3]. -- \mu/ 20:20, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Hola. He puesto las imagenes que subi bajo la categoria de user, ya que no se en que categoria colocarlas. Espedro que este bien, si no es asi, comunicamenlo y volvere a cambiarlo. Gracias.--Route 66 (talk) 09:14, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Please Inform the owner, if category is missing

Your bot informed me (diff), but I do only small edits to foreign images. If any image has a the Template:Bilderwerkstatt, please inform the original uploader/owner of the image. --Nyks (talk) 13:33, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

No, you are the uploader so you get a friendly note. Multichill (talk) 13:52, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
I edit many images, but I often have no idea, what they are showing. Due to technical reasons in commons, everyone has to upload images, if changes were made. --Nyks (talk) 14:34, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Bot Uploads and Orginal Descriptions

Your bot seems to be discarding the original descriptions on files when it transfers them from en.wiki to here (commons). One example can be found at File:Copper just above its melting point.jpg and the w:File:029-Cu.jpg description on en.wikipedia. Peachey88 (Contribs) (Wikipedia: User) (Wikipedia: Talk) 05:01, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Fortunatly the original description doesn't get totally lost. En part ends up at the licensing section. I'll look into it. Multichill (talk) 12:26, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Missing categories of incorrectly named images

Hello Multichill, could you please modify your bot such that it doesn't mark images as uncategorized which are tagged for speedy deletion by ... (and maybe other tags). I deliberately removed the (wrong) cats of one of my images (Image:Cabbage White Butterfly.JPG) such that it doesn't show up there. I tagged the image 10 days ago, but it hasn't been processed by an admin yet, so I felt it appropriate to remove them. Of course, I could add the correct cats, but then the image would show up in those cats twice and with a wrong title. Alternatively, one could create a new cat Category:Badly named images or so and add it to the bad name template, but that's not my decision to make. What do you think? Best wishes, --Quartl (talk) 07:29, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
