Copy Paste #2

--Aa1bb2cc3dd4ee5 (talk) 20:15, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

--Mattes (talk) 20:18, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
War so auch meine Vermutung. Jetzt abgeschnitten. --Aa1bb2cc3dd4ee5 (talk) 20:22, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
Danke :-) --Mattes (talk) 20:28, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, you placed File:'Venus and Cupid', oil on canvas painting by Battista Dossi (Battista de' Luteri), c. 1540, Philadelphia Museum of Art.jpg in the Category:1540s paintings in the United Kingdom.
Where in the United Kingdom is this painting? And could you please give a source for that? Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 13:27, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

UK was the next pre-filled option. Of course, it should be "in the United States". Sorry, --Mattes (talk) 13:44, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

I noticed you separated the text "24 × 18 cm oil on panel" out of the Information template. Why is that? Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 13:30, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Because the uploader used the wrong template. Any artwork should be formatted with the Artwork. Artwork with Information get their title in the Description parameter. In Artwork, there is a title and a description parameter. --Mattes (talk) 13:41, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
As far as I know the upload procedure does not give a choice of templates (Or am I mistaken? I'm always using the old forms). Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 13:54, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Looks like you're right. I always use http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uploadformstyle=basic or Commonist. Newbies don't get the artwork template provided (not asked by the wizard). Only experienced users know about it. --Mattes (talk) 14:01, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

License changes (and reversions)

Hi there,

I removed the "CC" license on some of your images because I thought it contradicted the "PD" status of the images.

However, I have reverted all these changes, as I am not 100% sure that I was correct. Please accept my apologies. Ubcule (talk) 20:24, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

No problem. I licensed the photographic work with CC-BY 2.0 and the motif with PD-old. --Mattes (talk) 20:26, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I understand that was maybe what you meant- that was why I reversed my changes.
It is complicated, because rules vary in different countries.
In the US- where Commons is based- one cannot claim new copyright on "faithful" reproductions of 2D images. Therefore, in the US, you do not own any copyright on those photographs, and they have the same "PD due to age" status as the originals.
My mistake happened because, under US law, if the image is "PD due to age", then it is non-copyrighted and cannot be CC-licensed. It also means that you do not own any copyright. (Both these mean that your CC licensing does not apply- the first because it contradicts the "PD" status, and the second because one must own the copyright on an image to impose a CC license).
However... in other countries, one can still claim a separate copyright on the reproduction. Although your CC license on those reproductions does not apply in the US, it is still relevant elsewhere.
Perhaps you could add some text to make clear that "PD due to age" applies to the original document, and that "CC licensing" applies to the reproduction (but only in countries that allow copyright on "faithful" reproductions).
Maybe I made this too complicated? Sorry... ;-O
Ubcule (talk) 12:18, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Hm, that's too complicated for me. I have transfered the matter to Commons:Village pump/Copyright#PD-old and CC for own photographs (captured in Germany and Switzerland). At least I understand the problem. :-) I have licensed about 2,000 photographs this way at Commons... --16:13, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
I have a bad habit of making things sound even more complicated than they are. :-(
But yes- it was a good idea to seek further advice. I had considered saying that myself. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 18:51, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Deine Bilder

Siehe http://www.hochwasserschutz.de/produktbereiche/hochwasserschutz/mobile-waende.html

Category discussion warning

Paintings with signatures (lower right) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

This is the default orientation of crescents in the English heraldic tradition (and probably some others), so you could expand this category with hundreds of coat-of-arms images -- but I'm not sure there would be much point to it... AnonMoos (talk) 06:04, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

The category collects oriental crescents (like a croissant with horns up) --Mattes (talk) 06:08, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
And in the English heraldic tradition (and probably some others) this is the default orientation of crescents, so you could easily expand this category with hundreds of coat-of-arms images -- but I'm not sure it would serve any real purpose to do so... AnonMoos (talk) 09:00, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't know that. I will detach the COAs then soon. Thanks for notifiying. --Mattes (talk) 14:17, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Ciao -- Gerd Fahrenhorst (talk) 12:34, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I dont't understand why You moved that file from one meaningless category to another one. That painting is in permanent collection in Kadriorg palace. Ahsoous (talk) 00:34, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hallo Mattes,

Was ist falsch.

--Mattes (talk) 09:47, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

oh thanks, --Mattes (talk) 13:20, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

"Portraits"

[1]: Hmm. I wouldn't normally call something like this a "portrait". Normally, that word (when applied to a photo) suggests a more formal sort of pose, not a candid shot like this. - Jmabel ! talk 04:42, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Not sure, you're probably right. Could you help me? This is a huge field for work. I do the art stuff OK? Thanks, --Mattes (talk) 04:54, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for reverting. I'm afraid I'm not in a position right now to give time to other people's reclassification work, I'm pretty loaded up myself. - Jmabel ! talk 06:34, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

You moved lots of images to "Portraits with books in art". 1st "in art" is totally superfluous in this name, Category:Portraits with books is good enough. 2nd, many of those are not portraits in the sense we usually use the word (as "portrait of an individual, possibly nameable human"), but just anything with a person on it (like "Virgin Mary" paintings and such). --FA2010 (talk) 08:41, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Also, File:Gentileschi, Orazio - Public Felicity Triumphant over Dangers - 1624-1625.jpg and File:Eugen de Blaas The Flirtation.jpg, which are an allegory and a genre scene. None of the information on the image description pages indicates that they're portraits... AnonMoos (talk) 12:42, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Tell me, dear friend, what means the name of this category? If can be "portraits with books NOT in art"? "Portraits with book in art" can meant only something like "paintings depicting portraits with books"... I believe it is mistake after creating "people with books in art", and you should rename it simply in "portraits with books". --Shakko (talk) 20:48, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

There are photographic portraits with books, too. Therefore I've created an art variation to distinguish photographs from artwork. Greetings, --Mattes (talk) 20:52, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
photographic portraits with books should be simply subcat of main portraits with books, same like painted portraits with book, engraved portraits with books and sculp. portraits with book. "In art" for sure is unnecessary. I can't see the logic. See what we have in Category:Paintings in art: depictions of artwork in other artwork. You in your category mean something other. And by the way, photography is also the visual art. --Shakko (talk) 21:14, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
I have modified the structure now. I think it is OK
Overview of the inventory and hierarchies of Portraits with books (depth=3) (part of People with books + Portraits by detail):
Portraits with books(9 C, 383 F)
no subcategories

Maybe we need a broader discussion on the category talk page?! --Mattes (talk) 22:00, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

you see, there is the same question from other user. I beliуve you et confused and should simply remove "in art". Shakko (talk) 18:14, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

speedy deletion

Mattes, don't recreate it please. Every "portrait" is ART. If it isn't art, in isn't portrait, is simple image. "Portrait photograph" and "photograph of man" aren't the same. Not every photo of man is portrait photo of man

We have in commons the system. Don't change it according to your own understanding of terms. --Shakko (talk) 20:29, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

What are you doing?? Go and read the definition of "portrait genre" en:Portrait! Paintings of Madonna, saints and Jesus are not portraits! 'Cos they definitely can't reflect their likeness. Portrait is the image of concrete, specific person's face, even if the name is unknown. File:Rembrandt - Artemisia - WGA19234.jpg also isn't portrait - it is fictional queen, the history painting. File:August Allebé - De vlinders.jpg absolutely not a portrait - simply genre scene. File:Claude Vignon Croesus.jpg - not portrait, Ancient myth. File:Boucher L’Éducation de l'Amour.jpg, File:El Greco 035.jpg... Especially File:Hirsau-Marienkapelle 111-1.JPG - what kind of portrait?? Please, stop it. --Shakko (talk) 18:26, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, my information is based on de:Porträtmalerei whereas they are " a genre of paintings which the aim to depict a person" (Original: "ein Genre der Malerei, dessen Gegenstand die Abbildung eines Menschen in einem Gemälde ist."). I have asked for a more precise definition there. Greetings, --Mattes (talk)
JFTR: 99% of my miscategorized (alleged) "portrait-paintings" are recategorized now, mostly by myself. Sorry again. ::Recapitulating, these are not portrait-paintings of people ("Black list"):
 • any religious figures from the bible, torah, qur'an, etc. (except donor portraits)
 • any saints (except donor portraits); a couple of hundreds are not bible saints.
 • any genre paintings
 • I guess any winged figures
 • snapshots

HotCat shortcuts

Hi Mattes; hereby a copy of a message of user:Lupo that implemented a feature that you need badly. --Foroa (talk) 12:52, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

A first prototype is ready now. The functionality is not yet in the gadget, though, thus if you want to test it, it's a bit involved:

importScript('User:Lupo/c2.js');

User:Lupo/c2.js is my private development version of HotCat. To switch back to the normal HotCat gadget, remove the "importScript" line again, re-enable the gadget, and reload the browser cache.

A first shot at some documentation for this is at User:Lupo/hc_shortcuts. I'll probably add a few screenshots of shortcuts in action before this goes live.

If anything is unclear, or doesn't work, or could or should be improved, leave me a message, either here or on my talk page. Please test it thoroughly; and use it for a while with shortcuts defined. Our version of HotCat is used on many Wikipedias directly; before we can update our gadget with this, we'll have to be reasonably sure that it won't cause problems.

Cheers, Lupo 11:52, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. Well, personally, I don't need such a feature, I pass it on User:Mattes that needs such a thing badly. --Foroa (talk) 12:52, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

You added "Paintings not categorised by year", but it says 1783... AnonMoos (talk) 13:55, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

the description reads "Salon de Paris 1783", which means the painting was presented to the public in that year. In my understanding this does not necessarily mean the year of accomplishment. You can add it, I don't do it... --Mattes (talk) 13:59, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Ok, but then at least you know "1783 or earlier"... AnonMoos (talk) 15:46, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

SÄK-Nummernschild

portrait paintings

Hi Mattes. We share interest in the arts it seems. I see you around a lot. I have a suggestion. I would like to see "Category:1890s paintings" as a direct parent of your categories like "Category:1890s portrait paintings". If you look at "Category:1890s paintings", you see that it is easy to reach "1890s still-life paintings" for example, but not easy to reach "1890s portrait paintings" at all. This would be useful when using tools like Cat Scan to find 1890s works, for one reason. The 1890 (portrait) paintings would not be found when scanning down the category tree, otherwise. Regards, Boo-Boo Baroo (talk) 03:47, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, you'er right :Category:<decade>s portrait paintings needs a :Category:<decade>s paintings, too. Of course, thanks for notifying. I'll fix that after sunrise --Mattes (talk) 23:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good. I can help if you like. I did see your previous message, with the links I had not come across before. It looks like the guidance around art categorization is not very formalized (as I expected). I am comfortable with my own method, knowing that I take care of artist, date/period, collection, genre/topic/etc. Cheers Boo-Boo Baroo (talk) 00:23, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Mission accomplished OK --Mattes (talk) 09:43, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Template:Anonymize

Hi Mattes. I don't think your Template:Anonymize is a good idea. Once an image is uploaded it may be reused. If the non-anonymised version is on the internet somewhere, then you can use the anonymised version to find it using Google Image Search. See this TV program for examples. I've tried it and it works. Images with privacy issues should be swiftly deleted. Pixelation and black bands over the eyes and other techniques are ineffective. Colin (talk) 15:47, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Colin. As Commons:Personality rights states, "the best remedy is to edit carefully to protect people's rights." ... the earlier the better... After being anonymized, images of identifiable people are "waterproof" for all countries (for Germany: § 22 KunstUrhG and § 23 KunstUrhG). The similar image search is not a problem for Commons (if a face is visible for just a few hours at Commons, it is most likely not catched up by other websites; but if the face is here for months it most likely will be). After all, it avoids uploaders from being involved in potential legal cases. Cheers, --Mattes (talk) 16:57, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Of course it depends on what one means by "anonymized". The example I deleted from Commons:Photographs of identifiable people using pixelation fails the test. My point is that the persistence of images on the Internet combined with tools like Google Image Search means that anonymising techniques one may be familiar may be ineffectual. I am glad to see that the Commons:Personality rights essay also states "Putting a black strip over someone's eyes in a photo or pixelating a face may not sufficiently protect their right of publicity". I don't feel it is acceptable for users to be encouraged to upload an image that fails our policy provided they slap a template on it expecting someone else to cleanup the image. Better for the uploader to carefully edit the image appropriately (such as cropping) to avoid the problem altogether. Surely the legal and moral burden has always been mainly on the uploader, who must not rely on a third party fixing their mistakes. Colin (talk) 17:57, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
You forgot that not every every user has the skill to do the anon-work, example of my low profile skills in this area: File:Sicherheitsfachkräfte der U-Bahn-Wache München.jpg. --Mattes (talk) 19:28, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
What is the purpose of that photograph? With the eyes covered, I can't see anyone using it for any purpose. If the people didn't want their photograph taken or didn't want it uploaded to Commons, then your attempt at anonymising them hasn't worked. They are all easily identifiable to anyone who knows them. Colin (talk) 17:16, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Please discuss it in a DR and/or @ Commons:Requests for comment/images of identifiable people --Mattes (talk) 23:25, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Re "What is the purpose of that photograph?" — The purpose is to illustrate the uniforms and the equipment of the security guards. --Mattes (talk) 00:37, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Hallo Mattes, ich habe Category:1520s paintings from Germany entfernt, deutscher Maler, deutsches Museum, ich sehe da kein from. Vgl. Category:Baroque paintings from Italy nglish: Baroque paintings produced by Italian painters, currently located outside Italy. For baroque paintings in Italy please see: Category:Baroque paintings in Italy. Die anderen Files sind im Ausland. LG –Oursana (talk) 00:27, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Grundsatzdisku :-O betrifft einige tausend Dateien …
Betr.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Jedenfalls verstehe ich nicht, warum Du Category:Judgement of Paris by Lucas Cranach the Elder geändert hast in Category:Judgement of Paris by Lucas Cranach the Elder (motif). Und was ist ist mit Category:Judgement of Paris by Lucas Cranach the Elder? Das ist jetzt leer. Leer ist auch Category:Paintings of Judith with the head of Holofernes by Lucas Cranach the Elder‎??

Bitte nur Category:Judgement of Paris by Lucas Cranach the Elder.--Oursana (talk) 12:48, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, imho usually there is no need to use (p.e.) Category:Unidentified buildings in Switzerland, instead you may use (p.e.) Category:Buildings in Laufenburg, Switzerland respectively create a 'municipality-related' sub-category Buildings in xxx to avoid 'overflooding'.

imho the same for Category:Unidentified buildings in Basel, so you categorized before as Category:Wooden doors in Basel and/or a category of a Basel-related subcategory, among them districts etc.

You may agree, that there is just a handfull of Wikimedians who would be able to really identify 'such' unidentified buildings ;-) In all, thank you for your uploads and avoiding a 'over-flooding' of the above mentionned categories, regards, Roland 18:54, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Please don't confuse putti with angels. Putti have little tiny wings, they're always shown naked, and they're in the form of babies or young boys. Angels usually have large wings and robes, and are shown as adult in form, with halos and/or harps, and are usually shown in dignified repose or dramatic attitudes. Hallo Mattes.

--Leyo 13:13, 18 March 2013 (UTC) PS.

Danke. --Leyo 08:34, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Coat of arms of an unidentified priest in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Rome.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Mistaken file description

I think the description and street address on this file: File:Bad Säckingen - Kursaal außen (2012) (2).JPG are mistaken. The description and street address are the same as the next picture: File:Bad Säckingen - Kursaal außen (2012).JPG, but clearly the two pictures do not show the same building. The second picture appears to be the correct street address. I have been adding geo coordinates to photographs and ran across these two pictures.Regards, •••Life of Riley (TC) 20:34, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Panoramio help

I've come here because you're in Category:Commons users with an account on Panoramio. Could you message someone and ask for a free license for an image? Despite reading Panoramio's help pages, I can't yet figure out which free licenses are available through the website, so I don't know what to ask for. The reason I'd like to use this image is that it shows a house that's been destroyed; I'd like to use it at en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Gallatin County, Illinois, which currently has nothing better than File:Peeples Houses site in Old Shawneetown.jpg for the site. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 14:41, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Pay attention to copyright
File:BronxScienceHighNYC.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion.

Wrong Location with Automatic procedures

"the Upload Wizard adds the proper Geocoding Templates from the GPS data stored in your images"

Sometimes this kind of automatic procedure gives a very approximate location. not sure that it is very useful. by exemple, automatic procedure point to a location in the middle of a city, for a place that is somewhere around in that city. it is enough to indicate the city in the categories, this kind of location is useless. Moreover, it is misleading because it can make people believe that it is accurate information and they will not give it if they have actually the accurate information. so I suggest that this approximate location should be deleted as soon as the correct category is found.

to give an exemple : some photos with GPS data were taken in the jewish quarter of the old city of Jerusalem. the automatic procedure add the same geocoding located in the middle of the neighborhood for all the photos. when the appropriate category is found (ie "Category:Jewish Quarter, Jerusalem"), this approximative location is useless and misleading.

At least it must be clearly stated with a special mention, that this location is approximate, and not accurate.

I have made a proposal some weeks ago exactly about this problem. → Commons_talk:Geocoding/Archive_3#Building_new_photo_loc_templates --Mattes (talk) 12:22, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Bigger, Better, Art Object Images from the New NGA Web Site

Good Day,

I would like to thank you for your contributions such as File:Martin_Johnson_Heade-Cattleya_Orchid_and_Three_Brazilian_Hummingbirds.jpg. Good news! This image is now available via the Open Access program at even higher resolutions and possibly better scan quality. For example, the new location is Cattleya Orchid and Three Hummingbirds and is 1200 px by 900 px (old version was 1000 px by 760 px).

Best Regards, 96.26.79.253 12:09, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Bad coordinates

All of the pictures that you are uploading now have invalid coordinates. It would be better to use Location possible rather than have invalid coordinates. •••Life of Riley (TC) 16:37, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, yes the camera generates some weird GPS data. I have just bought it and the GPS software to support data synchronization with maps is not installed yet. The good news is, the coordinates still work for Open Street Map.
Can't suppress the recorded geo tags in batch uploads with Commonist. Couple of hundreds to go though. Don't bother, maybe a bot will fix it, or there is a solution with batch tasks (exchange bad coord with "loc possible"). I even don't know if we need coordinates of exhibits in a museum, although this one is huge. --Mattes (talk) 18:23, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Coordinates needed

Do you know where this building is in München? The given coordinates point to a town called Kempten, about 100 km from Munich. •••Life of Riley (TC) 16:58, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

OK new coord.! Greetings, --Mattes (talk) 17:18, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Two pictures

These two pictures (1)(2) show the same building, although one picture says Steinstraße and the other picture says St. Martin-Straße. However, I could not find the building on either street. •••Life of Riley (TC) 20:47, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Hmm... I'll take an extended walk this week and try to find it out. There are not much streets where cars can park perpendicular to the streets in Haidhausen and Giesing. Thanks for your efforts and notfication! --22:41, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Credit line

Cordialement. François de Dijon (talk) 22:14, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Leonardo, not Michelangelo

Can you please get this file either fixed or deleted? It is not by Michelangelo. And you have reversed the image. What is more, the image, in this incorrect state, seems to have been used in an article. It is by Leonardo da Vinci. That is why the writing is right to left.

--Oursana (talk) 23:54, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Mattes,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Hallo Mattes,

 1. Category:Humans with angels mit Unterkat. Category:Paintings of angels with humans bleibt, egal ob Körper oder Seele (evtl. Hinweis Kat.-Beschr.)

oder komplizierter

 1. Category:Souls with angels mit Unterkat. Category:Paintings of angels with souls

Currently this image has no proper copyright tag when I was reviewing some files in Category:Media without a license: needs history check. You broke the previous tag. Did you possibly mean to add PD-self? Please let me know or fix it. Thanks. Ww2censor (talk) 22:56, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Image Consent for AFAR Travel Guide

Dear Mattes,

I work for AFAR Media, a travel media company whose mission is to inspire and enable travelers to have richer, deeper and more authentic travel experiences around the world. We publish AFAR Magazine, which has twice been named America's best travel magazine, and AFAR.com, an online travel guide that has been recognized by the New York Times, Time magazine and many others as breaking new ground in inspiring and enabling great travel experiences (see www.afar.com/).

I’m creating content to recommend that travelers visit Phuket, Thailand, and would like to use the image in the following link. I would like to request your authorization and approval to do so.

http://www.afar.com/highlights/amulet-market?context=wanderlist&context_id=25060

AFAR also provides destination guides for partners, such as Westin Finds from AFAR, in which AFAR recommends places for Westin Hotel guests to visit. (See westinfinds.com/) We would also like to include your image in these recommendations.

If this is acceptable to you, I need you to reply to me that you are in agreement with the following provision, have the rights to the image and are authorized to provide this consent:

CONSENT AND AGREEMENT

AFAR Media is hereby granted royalty-free authorization and license to publish, display and use the image in AFAR Magazine, on AFAR,com, on WestinFinds.com, mobile variations thereof, and in such other electronic, digital, and print channels as AFAR and its partners shall determine, including in social media and collateral marketing materials. It is understood that you retain copyright ownership over the image, and this is a license only.

We will share our recommendation with you after it is complete. Thank you very much for your consideration.

All the best, Lara community@afar.com

You have already published the image :-) In this case, there is no consent necessary, see file description („I, the copyright holder of this work, release this work into the public domain. This applies worldwide. In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so: I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.“). Sincerely, --Mattes (talk) 16:02, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Do you have some basis to think I manipulated the colors in the photo I uploaded? Or does your very brief comment mean something else? (The colors have not been altered; the picture wasn't even postprocessed.) - Jmabel ! talk 21:35, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

OK Looks to me the colors in our File:Boeing firetruck 01.jpg came out wrong. a better photograph. Boeing Fire Department's fleet is traditionally yellow. http://www.boeing.com/assets/images/companyoffices/aboutus/fire/images/evt93_n.jpg Other images support that: https://www.google.de/search?q=Boeing+Fire+Department&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=fvL&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=3MrqUpKXGqfr4wTunIC4BA&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAg&biw=1440&bih=705 except the second one. To be really sure we need to talk to Boeing But I assume the rare Commons photo turned out so green because of the meadow which is reflecting in the livery. --Mattes (talk) 22:01, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

G. Münter-Bild

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Cabinet Magazine

Dear Mattes,

I'm writing from Cabinet magazine, a non-profit art and culture quarterly based in New York (www.cabinetmagazine.org). Our upcoming issue features a section on stones, with an article on the fascination American painters of the Hudson River School had for the Kaaterskill Falls. We're hunting for a high-resolution photograph of Thomas Cole's 1826 "Kaaterskill Falls." I've noticed that you've uploaded the existing thumbnail of the painting to Wikimedia (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cole,_Thomas_-_Kaaterskill_Falls.jpg), so I was wondering if you might have a higher-resolution version of the image. If you'd be able to provide us with this image, we'd be extremely grateful. If you are willing to assist us, you can reach me at julian@cabinetmagazine.org.

Many thanks,
