Cleanup tool

Greetings. I use your cleanup script and noticed that when I click the slower but safe cleaning option, it redirects me to a wmf toollabs URL – toollabs:magog/do_cleanup.php. I'd like to optimize this feature for mobile (Minerva) skin. I guess the script sends a post request because if I manually go to this URL, it says the file parameter is missing. How can I add this file parameter? Is there any other parameter? Could you point me to your script's api documentation page please if you don't mind?. Masum Reza📞 20:14, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

@Masumrezarock100: the script has no public documentation. However, I can tell you the parameters for an API nonetheless. You can use GET or POST, but GET will fail if the text field is more than 2000 characters.
The URL is:
The input fields are:
  • image (required): the name of the file. Must have at least one entry in the file history.
  • text (optional): the text to update. If not present, the script will use the file's current text.
  • summary (optional): this is useful only for front-end.
It successful, it returns the following fields:
  • changes: "major", "minor", or "none"
  • warnings: an array of issues that the bot detected when doing the cleanup
  • text: the new text
  • edittime: the last time the page was edited (I don't remember why I included this, but it's probably not useful)
  • summary: this is useful only for front-end.
If there is a fatal error, it returns the following fields:
  • error: the text explanation of the error.
Here is a sample call: https://tools.wmflabs.org/magog/do_cleanup_json.php?image=File:Maud_M._Holme,_Handwoven_Coverlet,_c._1937,_NGA_12904.jpg.

I just realized that Minerva skin doesn't have a usable sidebar. And the mobile editor covers the whole screen so there is no space for any gadget. So I probably won't be able to make it. (: Thanks anyway, for telling me the parameters, I appreciate it. :) I think it would be good if one could write a documentation page. It would be helpful for developers. Masum Reza📞 09:38, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: I may consider it. But in years of use, I've never had anyone else ask for an API. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:15, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
Lol, sorry if my request was weird. Masum Reza📞 16:40, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
So I have enabled Add all pages I edit to my watchlist in my preferences. I noticed that cleanup script doesn't check the Watch this page checkbox. And I always have to check it manually. Can you fix this? Masum Reza📞 11:04, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Hola, Magog the Ogre.

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:24, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

File:Photo Mukesh.jpg

The picture File:Photo Mukesh.jpg will be used on Wikidata. It is a member of a scientific org and it will be used on Listeria lists on multiple Wikipedias. I will not be surprised when the depicts attribute is used not that there is a category for the picture. Please restore the picture. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 08:52, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

@GerardM: why are you pinging me about this? You should probably ping the deleting administrator. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:51, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
It is your bot that judges files and indicates the need for deletion. I have come across that the indiscriminate way and expedient manner prevent any reaction. Furthermore it is the judge not the executioner who does the thinking. Thanks, ~~— Preceding unsigned comment added by GerardM (talk • contribs) 04:19, October 15, 2019‎ (UTC)
@GerardM: I believe there may be some confusion here. My bot is nothing but a list of files uploaded at a certain time. It makes no judgment. That is reserved for deleting administrators, which is who I recommend contacting. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:25, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
No confusion.. you put them all on the train and refuse to acknowledge where the train is leading. YOU PUT THEM ON THE TRAIN AND REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHERE THE TRAIN IS LEADING. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 04:32, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi Magog the Ogre. I saw you removed the npd tag from this file. I didn't add the tag, but I'm just curious as to why since it looks like there are two watermarks at the top of the photo (these, however, could actually just be part of the backdrop) and the EXIF data indicates that it comes from Facebook. It seems that at the very least the file should be OTRS verified, particular given the fact that the uploader has been uploading other files as copyvios and as "own work" and also seems to feel that no photos taken in India are subject to copyright protection. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:12, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: the image is not found anywhere else on the internet, and plenty of users watermark their photos. It seems much more likely that the uploader is the author. As for Facebook, I find it highly inappropriate that Masumrezarock100 and Túrelio are using this as a justification to speedy delete an image. There is absolutely nothing in the Facebook TOS which makes it incompatible with Commons; in fact, it explicitly states that the uploader retains the rights on their work. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:39, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Yes, but what if the uploader on Commons is not the one who isn't the original copyrignt owner/uploaded the file on Facebook? In that case, it would be a pure copyvio because they never had the copyrignt to begin with! If they are truly the author/copyrignt owner of the file, why didn't they uploaded the original version with EXIF? When a picture is uploaded on FB, it always strips off file metadata, and replaces metadata with FB "Special instructions" fields. It is hard to find the author if the necessary details in metadata are missing. Masum Reza📞 16:45, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: that's highly speculative and is true of any image on Commons. If you feel that is the case, why not bring it to DR? Why are you telling administrators that Facebook's TOS is incompatible with Commons when it absolutely is? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:51, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
There is nothing in FB's TOU that the author releases their file under a free license (that are compatible with Commons). Which is why, files from FB are incompatible for posting here. The uploader should have uploaded the original file. Masum Reza📞 16:55, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: That's not how copyright works. The user is allowed to upload to Facebook, then reupload here as a free license. The license explicitly states that the user retains the rights over their photo. The uploader is only providing Facebook with the right to reproduce the photo for its own purpose. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:01, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
I am specifically worried that the uploader of the image on Wikimedia Commons might not be the copyright holder of the file in question. FB's says that an user only provides Facebook the right to use their content not anyone. Which is why I am saying that they should upload the original content. Masum Reza📞 17:05, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: that is maybe a reason to bring the image to DR. It's not a reason to tag the page as an obvious copyright violation. And what does the Facebook TOS have to do with all of this? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:13, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Fair enough, I guess.
Facebook's TOC have something to do with this because it doesn't state that the uploader grants permission to anyone to use their content freely. That's why I mentioned it in my automated summary. Masum Reza📞 17:21, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: that would only matter if Facebook's TOS stated that the uploader no longer held the rights to their creation. Some tech companies have tried to put language to that effect in their TOS, but often it gets removed due to consumer backlash. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:27, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre and Masumrezarock100: I like Masumrezarock100 have always assumed that it would be better to have such images OTRS verified and am pretty sure I've seen this applied to other files by other admins besides Túrelio. If it's a gray area and there's disagreement, however, then perhaps the compatibility of FB's general license with Commons is something which should needs to be further discussed.
At the same time, I don't think it would be a good idea to assume that the uploader is the copyright holder in this particular case. The uploader basically stated on their user talk page that photos (at least photos of celebrities) taken in India aren't subject to copyright protection because celebrities appear at events where lots of photos of them are taken and these photos are then found used online by many websites. The uploader also was uploading photos of magazine covers taken from a Facebook account and other photos credited to different persons, and then claiming that as being their "own work" and released under a free license. All of these things combined made me wonder about whether this photo is really the uploader's own photo and whether they are mistaking "freely available" with "free from copyright protection"; so, if not speedy deletion, there should be at least some discussion about it at DR.
FWIW, I looked for this photo online as well, but one of the FB accounts of Naaz Joshi (the subject of the photo) is not publicly available and I don't know whether that means that the photo doesn't show up in any Google search. That still might not be a reason for speedy deletion, but without at least being able to see the full EXIF data or the file used anywhere online under a free license, it does make it much harder to verify its copyright status, at least in my opinion. Anyway, if you (=Magog the Ogre) think the file was incorrectly deleted and should be discussed at DR, then I've got no problem with that. Other files by the same uploader are being already discussed at DR; so, perhaps this could be added to an existing discussion. The uploader, however, has not commented at any of these other DRs and it's hard to clarify things or at least understand where the file really came from if they don't. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:46, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: a no permission or speedy deletion marker is generally for simple cases. This sort of detail is much too complex and should go through DR. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:43, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
My original post here was just a query as to why you removed the npd tag; just for reference, I didn't tag the file as a copyvio after you removed the npd tag. As I also posted above, if you feel this should be discussed at DR instead, that's fine with me. I cannot, however, restore the file since I'm not an admin; so, either you, Túrelio or some other admin will have to COM:REFUND it so that it can be further discussed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:12, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion!!

Magog, Help!

I just got a Notice of Impending Speedy Deletion "User:CarlOttersen (me) is considered to fulfill the criteria for speedy deletion and has been marked on its page. "

I have no idea what this is about. It comes from user GSS (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:GSS), whom I have no knowledge of either.

Since I have only posted a few, never contended, photos, and I updated in July the page of Berekum Arsenal FC of Ghana (they are my clients, I have their authority to do so), I am nonplussed.

Please resolve and keep me on as a regular, legit user.

Thanks Carl — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarlOttersen (talk • contribs) 17:06, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

@CarlOttersen: we get a lot of users who come on Commons with the sole intention to self-promote. It looks like GSS saw the URL on your userpage and thought it was promotional. We receive a lot of self-promotion, so we get a little sloppy in how we tag userpages. An administrator reviewed the notice and already decided the userpage was OK; I would have done likewise.[2] In any case, I apologize for the confusion. Magog are you aware of the American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples? It seems your insistence to apply European Historical References and or documents to define Indigenous peoples History is in direct conflict with Indigenous people Right to Protect their Culture and History. Please note the Declaration Preamble noted below. The Accawmacke Indian Wiki is based on recorded Oral and Written History from Accawmacke Indian Elders. While it may seem like an Essay in your Estimation. It is both accurate and Historically and Culturally Factual as verified by 27 Accawmacke Indian Elders and Historians. I understand. Is there any kind of license I could use to keep thes files? Paucabot (talk) 17:13, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
@Paucabot:
  • On most Wikipedias, you can upload them as fair use. Spanish Wikipedia doesn't allow this, though.
  • If the logos are particularly old, you can mark them as {{PD-old-70}}.
  • Some political parties, particularly tech savvy ones, are willing to release their logos as free. You can contact them specifically. For example, File:Scottish Green Party Logo.svg and File:Pacma.gif went this route.
  • If none of these work, some users will draw their own logo which is inspired by the public domain blazon. You have to take care that it is not a derivative work; see COM:COA.

File:8kun-logo-full.png

I am unsure as to why this logo meets the threshhold of originality. Is it because the snake or the background are too detailed? If that's the case there are multiple less detailed versions of this logo in existence, which can be found here. Would it possible to upload any of those or are they all above the threshold?--Kymbrium (talk) 10:43, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Kymbrium: the flower is certainly above the threshold unless it's based on a public domain image. The background and shading are copyrightable in most countries but not German-speaking ones, so you might be alright otherwise. Most of the snake images would be above the threshold everywhere; the very simplest ones without the coloring are probably below the threshold in Germany or Austria only. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:23, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
So, if I want to upload the one of the simpler 8kun logos, it would have to be done directly on the German Wikipedia, correct?--Kymbrium (talk) 21:25, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
@Kymbrium: 8chan is an American board so we go by American laws. I believe German Wikipedia allows fair use images as long as they are under the German threshold. You may consider asking for help there; I don't frequent that wiki and I can't help. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:38, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

2019 Mississippi gubernatorial and Attorney General map shapes

Thank you for making the electoral maps of Georgia! Would you be able to correct the formatting of the maps made for the Mississippi gubernatorial and Attorney General elections of 2019 so that they conform with the maps made of the state for previous years. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

2016 Virginia Democratic Presidential primary map request

Hi Magog! Would you be able to make a correction on the Democratic map? The alignment on the map is considerably more slanted than other maps of Virginia, which was the error of the designer of this map. The map of the Republican primarily is aligned like others of the state, and I was hoping you could model the alignment of the Democratic map after the Republican map. If you could do this, it would really be appreciated. Thanks! Count Awesome (talk) 04:56, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

When bots fail

Hi Magog. You have helped to set up a bot that runs through works by Danish artists. It usually runs fine - and I am very happy with it - but on a few days it has not completed its run, for example November 9 and November 29 of this year. Please observe here: User:Rsteen/Artists from Denmark/2019 November 21-30
Can anything be done to prevent these fallouts? Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 05:41, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

@Rsteen: this is caused by a very long term bug: phab:T89971. Unfortunately a fix is not simple as it requires some architectural changes in the bot. If I catch it within 24 hours, I can usually run it by hand with lower query limits, which fixes the issue. Otherwise the dates will be out of order. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:10, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. Would it be alright if I wrote to your mail on a day when the bot had not completed its run? No obligations of course. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 17:47, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
@Rsteen: that's not necessary. I already get an email from my bot when it fails. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:50, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Permision Confirmation

Thanks for uploading File:National Grain Elevator Winnipegosis 20150627 SLB-8.jpg. This media is missing permission information. w:en:RT-23 Molodets images marked for deletion.

I've changed the license for a couple of them and provided some links, but, sadly, it seems like the majority of those are going to get deleted. Is there any way of avoiding this? Also, should I remove the "deletion tag" myself or is this automated? The thing about those images (especially the ones with the warheads) is that they couldn't have possibly appeared on the Internet without the Russian government's permission - otherwise they'd be still in the classified domain. However, getting the official permission to use them from the Russian Ministry of Defense does not seem feasible and I understand why it could be inappropriate for the Commons. -- Nicholas Velasquez (talk) 19:37, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

@Nickolas Velasquez: I think you might be confusing the two definitions of "public domain." In the first sense, which you are using, it roughly means "available to the public." However, in the relevant legal sense, it means anyone can legally reuse the images without worrying about copyright. Under modern international copyright law, a content creator must explicitly release their work for that to be the case. Even state actors retain their copyrights.
I don't know of any release by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The Kremlin has released a lot of their modern work (Template:Kremlin.ru). Ping EugeneZelenko who may know of such a law or regulation. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:59, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
Yes, http://mil.ru license is {{CC-BY-4.0}}, but exact URL must be provided as source. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:14, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
All right, the majority of the images are going to have to be deleted then. What about the ones originated from the Yuzhnoye? One of those (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RT-23_(SS-24)_inflatable_nose_con.jpg ) is a compilation of the images from the Yuzhnoye's book about the missile's designer (http://epizodyspace.ru/bibl/utkin/utkin-2013.pdf) (p. 253) and the other one (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RT-23-SS-24-Scalpel-Launch-1S.jpg) is a higher quality version of the image presented on the Yuzhnoye' website (https://www.yuzhnoye.com/en/company/history/rk_rt_23.html). I have used the "PD-author" tag for both of them and provided the links, but I am not sure whether that's enough. I couldn't find any mentions about using images from books in the Commons' documents. -- Nicholas Velasquez (talk) 16:22, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
Also, this image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RT-23_(SS-24)_15Zh60_folding_nose_cone.jpg ) is already used in a publication by a 3rd party website (http://rvsn.ruzhany.info/kbu_002_06.html) and is likely from a book as well, since a number of those are provided as sources there. Should it be considered as a subject to fair use? Or should I delete it as well? -- Nicholas Velasquez (talk) 16:22, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

I was actually hoping that you will be able to add new category for PD-RU-exempt -- not delete the reference to it. These "festive covers" were used in the USSR for special telegrams ("happy birthday", "happy Victory Day", "happy New Year", etc.) and cost an extra 20 kopecks to sent. So far we don't have a separate category for them, but we totally need one, as I'm planning to upload more of those from my collection in the near future. I'm not sure to call them so I chose "telegram blanks". -- Wesha (talk) 15:34, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

@Wesha: If you'd like a new category, you would be the appropriate person to add it. If you need assistance with any part, you can reach out to another editor. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:52, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
It's not that I have a problem adding a new category -- I have a problem deciding what to call it (English is my 2nd language)... -- Wesha (talk) 02:12, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
@Wesha: I'm not sure we even have a term for that; we may have to make one up. What's the term in Russian? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:46, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
Widely, телеграфный бланк (literally "telegraph blank", meaning "telegram blank", "blank of a telegram") -- but that term covers all blanks, including "non-festive" ones such as File:USSR Telegram Form F-TG1a, 1988.jpg; narrowly поздравительный телеграфный бланк ("congratulatory telegram blank") - "telegram blank that is festive, intended for the purpose of sending best wishes / congratulations"; the latter cost extra because obviously it was printed on better (whiter) paper and had some pretty art on it. The actual text of the telegram was glued or attached to the reverse side that I did not scan, as it's completely blank (I have more of these "forms/blanks", some of them have art on both sides and they are currently in my "to-scan" queue). -- Wesha (talk) 18:52, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

2016 presidential election in Illinois map

Hi Magog! Would you be able to change the county borders for the 2016 map to be more consistent with the maps from previous years, as demonstrated by the 2012 map? The lines on the original map are considerably smoother, while the newer lines are much more jagged. If you could make this fix, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! Uploading Screenshot

Your reply in my talk page was late. So started topic here. Sorry.

I'm new to here. How to upload screenshots? Under which copyright law?

WeTalkWiki 08:53, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

@WeTalkWiki: there are two places you can upload an image. One is Commons, which is a central repository available to all wikis. The other is your local wiki, where it is available only there. In this case, you need to upload the screenshot as fair use on the local wiki, since it's not allowed on Commons. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:38, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

File:Ryszard Kalpas.png

Hi. Could you help me tu clarify if it is possible to use this Photo on Wikipedia? I have taken it (sreen shot) from http://www.muzeumkatynskie.pl/pl/11316/zbiory.html?search=Kalpas. It shows a photo which is a museum exhibit of that museum. There is an explanation which seys: this photo a deposit of Jędrzej Tucholski, which was donated him by Alfred Kabaty. No year is given, but it must have been taken before the dead of the presented soldier Ryszard Kalpas, died in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre in 1940. How shall I proceed? @Mika58: When was it first made public ("published")? Who is the author? Has the copyright holder released the copyright? The license depends on your answer to these questions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:22, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Probably published first time on the museum's page in 2012 (see: "Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone, Muzeum Katyńskie 2012" http://www.muzeumkatynskie.pl/pl/4422/11387/fotografia_ryszard_kalpas_w_mundurze_por_mk_190_1_6_ik.html). The author is unknown. I have asked the museum (e-mail on 23 Sept. 2019) if the author's rights had already expired and got no answer. --Mika58 (talk) 09:00, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
According to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Poland, a work becomes public domain if it isn't published within 70 years of the author's death, or 70 years after creation if the author is unknown. Some EU countries extend publication rights, but I see no proof they exist in Poland. This is an unusual case for which we don't have a standard template. I believe {{PD-because|explanation here}} should suffice. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:43, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

many many maps

Hi Thanks for adding the Template Other versions on some of the maps I have made, one learns something knew all the time.
Maphobbyist has edited a lot (really many) of maps regarding adding borders of South Sudan and I have helped him with a small portion of them. During this process Maphobbyist brought up the subject if/when UK leaves EU and the amount of maps needing to be changed. This is a project which is impossible for just a few graphic workers, many many has to help with this.
So I had a thought about this when we have many many maps that needs to be edited due to countries, borders, membership, etc. changing. That is and will never be possible for one or a few persons to achieve, so we should have like a project for it, it could be sent to every one who does work at the Graphic_Lab/Maps and repeated every third month or so until it was done. Or maybe it could be like the banners that ask you to vote or take part of a competition, or some other way. There exist projects both here at Commons but more at Wikipedia for subjects, kind of tasks etc.
I don't know enough how Commons works at that level to be able to say how it should be, I just had that thought. Maybe you know this as you have more rights, knowledge, experience, etc, or someone else, or where to go with a thought like this. I really think we need a plan like this to use when we have similar situations. --Goran tek-en (talk) 15:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

File:Summons CONI Olympic Games 1960.jpg

Dear friend, sorry if — regarding the Copyright status of my "File:Summons CONI Olympic Games 1960.jpg" — I write you here, on your page, and not through my page, but I really would not know how to do that. I am not very expert in using Commons and Wikipedia: I only try to post here photos and other files which I think could become useful for the community. So, please, can you be so kind to help me?

Regarding said file:

  • It is a letter which I received from CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) on November 1958 informing me that I had been selected for the future team of Olympic Games 1960 (Rome, my country). I OWN the letter, it is MY PROPERTY;
  • it is a private letter, but it was published on many italian newspaper, and just in case it regards only MY PRIVACY;
  • I scanned and polished it and posted it on Commons;

So:

  • the letter in itself IS NOT MY own work but
  • the scanned image IS my own work done on a property of mine.

I tried to understand in which way I could publish it on Commons, but did not understand. So I did what I could.

Now I ask you (please be kind and patient):

  • can I post it on Commons?
  • which kind of permission?

Can you please aswer on my page?

File:WilliamLawsonDr.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

About all the Meganesia deletion requests

On the plethora of deletion requests by A1Cafel on images uploaded by Meganesia (here's one), you said that permission isn't required for facebook images when the user claims it as their own work (if I understood correctly). I poked around a bit and found this Village Pump/Copyright thread. Apparently there's a bit of precedent for this kind of thing: 1 2 3 (more available here). Obviously I'd defer to you on policy knowledge, but I wanted to let you know about these. Best, Mdaniels5757 (talk) 02:23, 7 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi, you added a "not sufficient information" on this file. At the source, en.wikipedia, there is - as far as I understood it - an accepted licence from Brave CF accompanied. What is it that is different between the two? I asked on the discussion page there too, but since the timer runs out tomorrow, I thought I'd post here too to try to get hold of you before it was deleted.

Thank you, Vattav (talk) 10:09, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

@Vattav: all images on Commons must have a license attached. Your file doesn't have a license. Please note that we don't accept fair use images either. You can probably get away with {{PD-textlogo}} this time since it's too simple.[8] Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:52, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

Copyright question

Hi Magog. Since you were helpful in providing some guidance to me recently, I have a question about a couple of files for you which I feel may violate copyright, but am sufficiently unsure about that I don't want to nominate for deletion. (If you want to refer me elsewhere or just nominate them for deletion myself, please let me know.)

  • The first one is File:Toon disney logo.jpg. The words can't be copyrighted, of course, but I'm not sure that the mouse portion is below the threshold of originality. I'm also sure that Disney trademarked it (without bothering to check). Since Disney is not known for their love of the public domain (See generally Mickey Mouse Protection Act), seeking permission would be futile.
  • The second one is File:ClayHost.svg. Although the text (sans holes) and crescents wouldn't be copyrightable, I don't know whether the holes in the text are part of the font (in which case it's ineligible for copyright) or added manually (in which case it may be copyrighted).

Your guidance would be appreciated. Best, Mdaniels5757 (talk) 01:01, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

@Mdaniels5757: the first one is a copyright violation and can be tagged a ssuch. The second one is probably not copyrightable in Germany, which has a high threshold. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:30, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
OK, thank you so much! Best, Mdaniels5757 (talk) 16:01, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:34, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

In the absence of your response, I assume you have sorted out whatever was the issue with the above file. DMBanks1 (talk) 14:50, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

@DMBanks1: you didn't read the instructions before uploading the image, which explains Commons policies on licenses. You didn't read the message on your talk page, which explained it again. Finally you responded without even pinging me, despite the message on my talk page stating I wouldn't ever see it. And now you come and presume that I've fixed your image for you? Really? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:09, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
There appears to be a communication breakdown, since your response leaves me totally baffled. Please state simply the specific steps I need to take to satisfy your concerns. Like most people, I'm not very good with gobbledygookDMBanks1 (talk) 16:25, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
@DMBanks1: I'm no Ogre, but I imagine that his concern is that the image is not in the public domain in the US. Specifically, the photo was taken in 1957. Applying the rules here (Rule 3(a)(B)(b), to be precise), the image entered the Canadian public domain in (1957+50 years =) 2007. But the COM:URAA requires that, in order for the image to be in the public domain in the US, the image must have been in the Canadian public domain in 1996, which it was not. So even though the image is in the public domain in Canada, it is not in the U.S., so it cannot be uploaded to Commons without a license from the copyright holder. Does that help/Magog, did I get that right? Mdaniels5757 (talk) 17:00, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
I had taken many guesses as to what the initial concern may have been. I must admit this was not one of them. I am glad I did not take corrective action based on any of my wild presumptions. What adds to my confusion was the statement. "And also: File:Marpole (Eburne) Bridges (1919).png". I am still puzzled as to the issue with a 1919 image in the public domain. DMBanks1 (talk) 18:10, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
@DMBanks1: Ah, that image itself was fine. However, we try to categorize files by licence type and we want machines to be able to tell what the copyright status of the work is. To do that, we use licence tags. It was tagged as not having any, so another user added them. Here's a link to more about that: Commons:Copyright tags. Cheers, Mdaniels5757 (talk) 21:59, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
@Mdaniels5757: thanks for your assistance. I've been admittedly grumpy lately and handled communication poorly. @DMBanks1: Mdaniels5757 is correct, the file needs a license tag. {{PD-Canada}} may suffice; I don't believe Canada interacts with URAA, since that nation has a pre-existing agreement with the US. @DMBanks1 the image is probably still under copyright. So it cannot be kept here. I recommend you read up on our copyright policies as linked on your talk page. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:39, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
I'll advise if the Vancouver archives have the image entering the public domain in Canada prior to 1996. DMBanks1 (talk) 02:07, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
@DMBanks1: it appears to be copyrighted in Canada too. Per w:List of countries' copyright lengths, it is copyrighted for 50 years after the death of the photographer. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:51, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

@DMBanks1: while I believe that matters in some countries, it doesn't in Canada. The copyright is attached to the life of the creator. You can read the act here: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-42/page-3.html#h-102776. The only exception is anonymous works, which this is not. Of what relevance is subsequent legislation? DMBanks1 (talk) 04:29, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
@DMBanks1: I'm done playing games with you. The file is deleted. Please do not upload any further copyright violations. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:40, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
