OS[edit]

Hi,

I nooticed that you needed to use emergency OS on Commons few times recently. Can you elaborate why: were local OS not available or these cases could not be handled by them for some reason? Just wondering, maybe we have too small number of users with OS rights? Ankry (talk) 10:29, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Ankry, thanks for asking the question. As you certainly know, I'm not able to comment details of any of the suppressions I made – I can only recapitulate what you see in the public logs and add a few generic comments. Details about any of the suppressions I performed can be discussed only with authorized NDA'ed people, such as local oversighters, other stewards or members of the Ombuds commission.
According to my Commons user rights log (local and crosswiki), there are three cases where I self-assigned the oversight permission to me:
  1. December 2020, emergency suppression in my steward role
  2. October 2021, suppressing revisions in my volunteer sysadmin capacity, required for technical reasons
  3. November 2021, emergency suppression in my steward role
In cases 1 and 3, I determined that the mere presence of the now-suppressed material requires immediate action (in this case, a suppression). Since members of the local oversight team were not immediately available, I carried out an emergency action.
In the second case, a suppression had to happen for technical reasons and was needed to protect the site's security. In this case, no attempt to reach to the local oversight team was made, because of the specific nature of the suppressed material.
In all three cases, the local team of oversighters was informed via email about the actions I made after they were executed. They were able to review and/or alter any of the actions I performed.

Thanks, Martin. This is much more details than I asked about. My only intention was to ask whether higher availability of local OS's would be helpful in these cases. And as I can see, your answer is: no. I fully trust you about these actions, and my question was only about co-operativity matter, not about any action details. @Ankry Having some OSers available on IRC (especially with their client being on on the background) might be helpful, as IRC is often faster way to get someone than an email. But, it's by no means required – if an emergency happens, stewards can intervene. Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:12, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
