@Daphne Lantier: please bring such requests to COM:RFCU for timely triaging. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:33, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
Jermboy doesn't hardly ever use socks, so there's no real need for an RFCU here. I just wanted you to run check because he uses long-term static IPs a lot, so I figured we might see a few of those on his range. But I can find him in recent IP changes regardless, so no worries if you ain't got time. Daphne Lantier 03:28, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Magog

Once time I uploaded this picture to Commons, but it was deleted. The reason explained that is had too much details, but I don't think so. It's possible to upload it again, at least with a modification? an example will the similar logos of this category. My Regards.--VictorPines (talk) 03:33, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

User:Jox Skill indef blocked by you

Hi,

I've been contacted by email by User:Jox Skill, who claims that he is using no more than one account, over the IP 105.172.71.225. You mentionned in the blocking log that he was "abusing multiple accounts", as you are a CU could you provide more details please?

Thanks in advance for your help, best regards, -- AlNo (discuter/talk/hablar/falar) 07:00, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

@Alno: he was a meatpuppet from the Principe Enthony Stark group, a Wiki Zero group from Angola which has used Commons as a file host. They upload music with similar titles as the file names. Sometimes the music is copyrighted; even if it is ever self-created, it is not appropriate for Commons. I'd make very sure the guy understands the scope of our project before unblocking him. Easiest way to list quite a few DRs?

I backed into some celebrity photo uploads and right now, it looks like quite a few will need to go to DR. The photos have come from various internet sites--blogs and the like. They're licensed as being PD with no notice, but at present, I'm not seeing any proof of that. Have been able to save File:Janet Gaynor - Sunrise (1927).jpg and will save as many as I can. The user had roughly 100 uploads. What's the easiest way to list the questionable ones-something other than individual DR notice? Thanks, We hope (talk) 22:24, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Container pitchers and baseball pitchers

Hi, Magog, could you please have a bot move everything in Category:Pitchers to Category:Pitchers (containers). I will then weed out the baseball pitchers. - Bossanoven (talk) 03:05, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

✓ already done apparently. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:57, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

I am curious whether or not material likely owned by a president's campaign committee, if published on the Presidents official social media account during his tenure, will then qualify as public domain. I have avoided upload videos such as this, this, this, this, this, this. I recognize the images the "news" clips, they are amongst the images from the Office of the President of the United States that I have previously uploaded (I would, of course, want to verify that each and every image indeed was from such a source, and provide information proving it, before I would upload those videos). Just curious whether or not any of this would even qualify for that license (would rather not learn the harder way). Your perspective would be greatly helpful! SecretName101 (talk) 18:40, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

@SecretName101: the reelection campaign is self-funded, and by law separate from from the US government. I would definitely not consider any of that to be public domain. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:43, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
That was my presumption. That media created outside of the office of the president, even if distributed on the President's social media accounts, would not qualify. Just wanted to verify if I was not at all mistaken. Thank you for answeringSecretName101 (talk) 04:53, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't notice this and the other file were nominated for deletion, but if these two images have the same copyright status as the image deleted in 2011, should they be public domain now ("start of 2016")? (Please confirm since I cannot view the deleted files' authorship information.) Thanks, Jc86035 (talk) 10:45, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

@Jc86035: none of those are public domain in the United States though, which the WMF states that they must be. We don't enforce it well but it is a rule. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:45, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

OgreBot 2 edit breaks formatting in Wikipedia Media Viewer

Hi,

The edit of "OgreBot 2" here changed a date from "March 2017" to "2017-03". Unfortunately, Wikipedia Media Viewer does not correctly handle "2017-03", displaying it as "1 March 2017", i.e. adding a spurious "1". Until this bug in Media Viewer is fixed, I feel it is not advisable to make such automated changes (unless leaving it as "March 2017" breaks something else even worse, I suppose). See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_158#Bug_in_dating_of_photographs. Mypix (talk) 17:54, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

@Mypix: the reason for the edit is to make it multilingual, which is a core tenant of our project. I apologize but I think the best solution is to have Mediawiki fix their viewer. Leyo, you helped form some of the policies for this bot. Do you care to share a second opinion? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:15, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I totally agree that it should be fixed in Media Viewer, but judging by this there is zero chance of that happening within the foreseeable future. It has already been logged since 2013, with no sign of any interest in fixing it, being given "lowest" priority, and some people implying that it is not even worth fixing. In the meantime, dates continue to be displayed incorrectly. Mypix (talk) 03:42, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
A format like |Date=2017-03 has been the standard for a long time. Media Viewer needs to correctly handle it. --Leyo 12:26, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
Well, does anyone here have any influence that could be brought to bear on the developers to actually fix it? Mypix (talk) 17:43, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
@Mypix: I will throw my weight behind it, although I wouldn't ever bet on my "influence" over anything. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:55, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

Opinion?

Hi. If you have time, I wonder if you might give me an opinion on File:Arijit Singh at awards show.png, File:Arijit Singh at concert.png, File:Pawni Pandey.jpg? I'm not an expert on YouTube licensing, so I tagged them for Licence Review, but the more I think about it the less I can imagine they are anything but copyvios. No worries if you're busy with other stuff. Cheers -- Begoon 05:25, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

@Begoon: I deleted all of them. The uploader probably found a license that no one checked and just used that; very unlikely that they all switched license after upload. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:19, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Thank you - that's what I thought, but I needed a second opinion. Even if they were originally uploaded with a CC license to YouTube that still doesn't necessarily make that license correct though, does it? I mean, I could upload my digital recordings of "Game of Thrones" to my YouTube account and indicate such a "license" right now. They'd probably catch that pretty quickly, but I don't know how good YT are at policing less "high profile" violations. I do know there's lots of stuff I've watched on there and thought "how is this allowed?". I think they are probably pretty reactive rather than proactive in their policing, like Google Search, tending to wait for a DMCA notice or an actual abuse report.
Anyway, enough of my rambling - thanks again for the quick help. Cheers. -- Begoon 01:57, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
@Begoon: yes, you should be skeptical of YT uploads. We assume good faith but only when appropriate. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:27, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

Help

Hello Magog, I just thought you could help with OgreBot. It failed to update my Georgia-related daily gallery for three or four consecutive days last week and then stopped reporting at all. Can anything be done to fix that? Thanks, --Kober (talk) 15:43, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

@Kober: The message on your talk page gave instructions on how to find which supercategory is causing a problem. When I looked, they all seem to have the common ancensor Category:Soviet Union. When I searched the history, this edit caused the problem. FYI, so that in the future, you can do that research on your own. I have restored the gallery now and told the bot to ignore the Soviet Union category. [1]. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:58, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

- SafwatHalaby (talk) 05:49, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

@SafwatHalaby: both of those templates are restriction tags, and not licenses. They both state that an actual license is required in addition to the tag. Therefore the permissions note was valid. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:46, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
Template:FoP-Israel is not a restriction tag. It does not state that an actual license is required in addition to the tag. Also, if you want to delete this, you might as well delete all Israeli coats of arms because they have similar tags: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:SVG_coats_of_arms_of_Israel. (I'd guess that "own work" of most of these is actually just a way to bypass the uploader because otherwise upload seems to fail). -- SafwatHalaby (talk) 06:07, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre: Hello, I just have a question. Why was the file File:Mount Carmel Health Logo.png added to your user catagory: User:Magog the Ogre/PD ineligible/2017 August 28-3 ? It is a 4k png file. As stated on Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Trademarks this is a design with just letters and a several simple geometric shapes. Now I freely admit I may not have added the right tags to it since it is the first and only image I ever uploaded that wasn't of my own creation. So if I made an error I would really like to know. Thank you, Sixflashphoto (talk) 06:18, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

@Sixflashphoto: because it is in Category:PD ineligible. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:30, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: Please understand I do not understand why this has happened. The history even now says it was nominated for deletion but it seems the deletion request for it was removed. I am very confused by all of this. If this does not meet the eligibility requirements I would like to know, and know why. When it goes into Category:PD ineligible "These images are ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain". So I don't know why someone is trying to delete the image. If you could take a minute to tell me what this is all about I would really appreciate it. And if it is my fault I will do anything I can to correct it. Thank you, Sixflas. I understand what I did wrong. Do I still need to do anything to the image? Thank you again Sixflashphoto (talk) 03:04, 30 September 2017 (UTC)hphoto (talk) 00:44, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
@Sixflashphoto: Unlike Engish Wikipedia, Commons doesn't allow fair use images, so when you marked it as fair use, this automatically marked it for deletion. Basically, you requested deletion on your own image.
However, there is a concept in copyright law called the threshold of originality. If the content doesn't meet basic requirements of artwork, it cannot be copyrighted in some countries. Your image is probably too simple to earn protection from the copyright office or from US courts. Therefore it is actually OK to keep on Commons. Anything more complex you should upload to English Wikipedia.
The reason my gallery exists is to make sure that users aren't incorrectly uploading images which are too complex for the threshold of originality. But yours is fine.
To make things possibly more confusing, you should see the {{Trademarked}} template on that page. Please note that trademarks are an entirely different form of intellectual property than copyright. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:00, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre:Thank you so much for explaining that. I understand what I did wrong. Do I still need to do anything to the image? Thank you again Sixflashphoto (talk) 03:04, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
No. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:05, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Does this look like someone? someone who just registered under an hour ago, and doing deletion requests?

btw, thanks for autopatrol status. Artix Kreiger (talk) 04:33, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Sanity check for photos uploaded

Hi I have uploaded some photos from Indian Army Website and attached the Indian Army attribution to them. Can you please verify if this is okay? The files are File:Surinder_Singh_GOC.jpg,File:Devraj_Anbu_GOC.jpg, File:PM Hariz GOC.jpg, File:BS Negi GOC.jpg and File:DR Soni GOC.jpg. In the past there has been a difference in opinion by various editors on Indian Army images. If you think these violate Wikimedia policy, then I can self nominate them for deletion. Thanks. Adamgerber80 (talk) 12:35, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

@Adamgerber80: the community decided this source is not free according to Wikimedia standards: Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2017-01#File:Devraj Anbu NC.jpg. From my reading of the situation, the Indian Army says that images cannot be used in a derogatory way; all armed forces are notoriously thin skinned so we believe that they are not truly free. Imagine, for example, a Pakistani journalist using the image in an article about anything opposing the Armed Forces. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:11, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
I understand that concern. But other images have been allowed from the Indian Army website and are currently available on Wikimedia. So the rule is no new images to be uploaded henceforth? Would a permission similar the one for Indian Navy help here? Thanks Adamgerber80 (talk) 00:11, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
@Jameslwoodward, LX: y'all were the primary voices standing against Indian Army pictures. Would one of you mind providing your opinion on this? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:51, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
My comments at the UnDR cited above pretty well cover it. The Indian Army license would preclude a journalistic use identifying the subject as corrupt. It also probably precludes even simple cropping. I agree, as I said at the UnDR, that we have images on Commons that have the Indian Army license. They should be deleted. "Other stuff exists" is never a reason to keep an image here. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:10, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
I'd second that. LX (talk, contribs) 11:04, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Video poker

I'm curious. How did you find out that the deleted page File:Bartop video poker machine (Vegas).jpg ‎as well as the en:Wikipedia original en:File:Quadacesjacksorbetter.JPG (marked as transferable to Commons by a bot), was in fact "F9: Unambiguous copyright violation: Derivative work of non-free content". — I'd like to learn how to better identify bad uploads to save myself some time in the future. Thanks, Poeticbent talk 19:26, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

I searched Google Image Result for the bartop video poker machine to see if I can find that Derivative work of non-free content by myself. I noticed that the en:wiki file had a very distinctive camera flash reflection on the second upper column of numbers, against the black background. I did not find anything like that anywhere else in Google Image. The uploader (if I remember correctly), mentioned that he took that picture himself to prove his own winning hand. I'm unable to figure this one out for now. Poeticbent talk 19:46, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

@Poeticbent: you can see the image here: [2]. The issue is that a photographer does not fully own the rights if it is a derivative of another work. In this case, the copyright for that computer screen has creative elements which belong to whoever created the poker machine. You can read more about derivative works in this link I provided for the deletion summary. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:46, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

A new sock from the 18th with a couple of copyvio uploads: Milanopablog4712. I hope you're doing well old friend. Ryan5970 (talk) 00:59, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Hello Magog, is it possible that the uploads made by User:VortBot do not appear in the sub-galleries "Uploads by new users"

Exemple File:Tolaneala bikini.jpg, as a lot of other uploads, appears in User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users/2017 October 20 07:30

However I guess this kind of gallery is intended to highlight the uploads made by new users and not the uploads by bots...

I'm wonder if you can do something, thanks you.

Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:49, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

@Christian Ferrer: yes, it's in the FAQ linked at the top of every gallery. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:17, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Problems with a photo...

Hi, Magog. I uploaded a photo few days ago, and it has some error in the licensing section. I'm not sure what's wrong. It happened with the original image (I uploaded a retouched version) I think it needs some fix, because I tought it was the link. My regards.--VictorPines (talk) 03:23, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

@VictorPines: the bot is only capable of recognizing exact images from Flickr - bit for bit- or any of the thumb sizes which Flickr creates. If the image is edited in any way (e.g., changing cropping, changing metadata), it must be reviewed by a human. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:01, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Question

WRT OMC maps, I just saw this edit of yours.

I sure miss the OMC. I uploaded several hundred maps I prepared using this tool. If I had known it was giong to disappear I would have rushed to use it to create a thousand maps.

My understanding of licensing has evolved. I am not sure I am happy, now, with how I attributed all those maps, then.

In particular, there was a category, for maps prepared on the OMC site.

Your relicensing... Can you explain why you think that map, and presumably all the mps I prepared, are CC-sa?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk)

@Geo Swan: I vaguely remember making this edit. From viewing archive links of the page, I see that at the time, it redirected to here, where a cc-by-sa-2.5 license is prominently displayed. On the other hand, I see nothing about a public domain license on the original page.
That is literally all the information I have. If you know something I don't, feel free to correct me. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:07, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

2013 Virginia Governor's Race

I have noticed on your map for the 2013 Governors race that there has been an error in the shading of two municipalities. These are Franklin County and the southwestern part of the state and the independent city of Franklin, located in the Hampton Roads area. In Franklin County, the Republican Cuccinelli received 10,011 out of 16,324 votes, around 61.3%. In the city of Franklin, the Democrat McAuliffe received 1,362 out of 2,303 votes cast, around 59.1% of the vote. I found this information on the Virginia Department of Elections website and will share the URL: http://historical.elections.virginia.gov/elections/view/43843/ I would really appreciate it if you could make the change. Thanks! Count Awesome (talk) 23:22, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

@Count Awesome: thanks for the note. I had Franklin County and city mixed up, which I only realized in the past day or two. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:53, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

Thank you very much for making the change! I have another request for you, because I really like the style of your maps. Could you do a map for the 2005 Virginia governor's race, where Tim Kaine, the future Senator and Democratic vice presidential nominee was elected in the way you have done for the more recent gubernatorial elections? Licensing question

Hi. I transferred File:Keaton Jennings batting for Durham CCC.jpg with flickr2commons as it was the only free image I could find anywhere to crop and help with this request: [5] at the en Graphics lab. I assumed it would be ok, since it appears to me to be the work of the Flickr user, and was marked PD. However, the review bot doesn't like that, and I'm not sure how to proceed.
Can an appropriate tag be applied, and if so, what (perhaps {{pd-author}} because on his Flickr user page he says "I love taking photos of varied subjects with my Nikon D3200m" which matches the EXIF, and he has tagged the image PD?) - or should the file just be deleted here? Any pointers would be very helpful, because I'd like to keep it, but if you think it should just be deleted please feel free to do that. Cheers. -- Begoon 02:11, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Category:Maps_of_the_world_showing_all_ongoing_conflicts has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

Archivos

Saludos. Dime si tienes otras preguntas. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:34, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:54, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

2016 Kentucky presidential election map

Magog, I really appreciate the work you have done on the maps I requested. I noticed that the map for the 2016 presidential election in Kentucky is somewhat different than previous maps done for the state, such as in 2012. The 2016 map contains counties which were accidentally included that belong to other states. One of the counties in the far west of the state belongs to Missouri while some in the northern part of the state were likely taken from Ohio or Indiana. I should mention the map on top is 2016 while the bottom is 2012. If you could fix the map to resemble the 2012 map in shape, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! I found another possible sock: Roverisk122. The editing behavior so far is nearly identical to that of the last known sockpuppets of Tamara787. Also, this likely sock account is active on the English Wikipedia as well, so I will have to head there and re-open an SPI case. If this account is a sock, can you please indef block the account and run a Sleeper Check, and Rangeblock the recent IPs? Without an IP block, he's just going to keep making more accounts. LightandDark2000 (talk) 00:26, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
@LightandDark2000: I have done this. IP and/or range block is not feasible; whack-a-mole is the best solution at this time, sorry. FWIW, Tamara787 has had a lot of really valuable contributions on those maps, so I actually ignored the sockpuppetry for a while as he kept his nose clean and didn't edit war. After a while, that was no longer possible, but you might consider the same approach (you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar).
