Image deletion request

Hi, I noticed my face in one of the images here on Wikimedia Commons. I am not particularly photogenic and do not feel comfortable with such images posted of me online. I don't know the name of the image off the top of my head, but I remember seeing that it was released to public domain. Even though image is made public, shouldn't you be able to delete it, since I didn't see it on any other Wikis and I don't see what the problem with deleting it is. Let me know if you can and I will try to point you towards where the image is located at. --69.203.194.134 17:43, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

If the photograph was taken of you in private, then you can raise a deletion request and quote Commons:Photographs of identifiable people. If it was in a public place, then you can try a deletion request anyway, but you are unlikely to succeed. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:10, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

From what I recall it was on a private road. If it's not on any other Wikis, then does it need to stay up on Wikimedia Commons? --69.203.194.134 21:11, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

That's information you should bring up in the DR. It will help factory into whether it's kept or not. I'm sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, but the process isn't a definitive one; administrators handle it on a case-by-case basis. ¿A cuál dirrección se lo enviaste? ¿Y qué era el sujeto? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:37, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say regarding this image. The user (uploader) is not a third party. He is the artist, the person who photographed it, uploaded it, and released it under its current license. There was no third party involved. Are you saying that since I transferred it to Commons, it now requires a permission tag? Hazmat2 (talk) 04:47, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

No, it's because the content was created by an artist who has his own Wikipedia entry. We need to verify that the author and the uploader are the same person through OTRS. If the artist is in fact internet-savvy, then one of us could contact him through an external website. Do you see why I marked it? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:55, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
I see. I thought I had seen a verification online before. Anyway, I emailed him to let him know he'll have to go through OTRS. We'll see what happens. Hazmat2 (talk) 05:49, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Any ideas? Thanks again for all your work. PS. You may like to update the link to the tool on User:OgreBot Cube00 (talk) 11:00, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cube00. I'm as glad that someone is finding use of my work as you are to be able to use it. In any case, Mediawiki threw the following error when the bot tried to upload the image: This file did not pass file verification. This happens when Mediawiki originally allowed a corrupt image be uploaded, but now it has checks in place to stop such files from being uploaded. In other words, the only way to transfer it would be to download the image manually, fix whatever bugs are in it, and reupload. Either that, or there is a bug of some sort in Mediawiki's JPEG tester. If you want specifics, the VPT geeks would be a great place to start (they're always smarter than I am about such things). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:46, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply, sorry I included in the wrong talk page, the page with the outdated old version filemover is on en.wiki Thanks again. Cube00 (talk) 09:27, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

I completely forgot about that userpage, to be honest. I'll update. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:46, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi, found the problem (that I should have spotted before), the files are different formats so in effect what I was asking MediaWiki to do was put this jpg as a revision of this png file. No wonder it didn't work, thanks again. Cube00 (talk) 09:23, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
I missed that too. I would have disabled the ability to upload in such circumstances but sometimes older files are on local projects under the wrong extension. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:48, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Verificación

Hola.

Gracias. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:45, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Misleading map

Hi Magog, could you please look into file [3], which is original research, based on no sources and expands Kurdish areas much beyond the kurdish presence in Syria. See this more credible map for example. Thanks, عمرو بن كلثوم (talk) 12:38, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Generally on Commons, we don't worry as much about original research; we leave the details up to the local projects. The reasoning is fairly simple: we want to incorporate all points of view as long as there is a good academic reason to do so. If you can show that the original uploader has obviously misrepresented the truth (e.g., shown that Kurdish regions extend into Damascus), then feel free to overwrite the file with your own version. I am not by any means an expert on Kurdish-related issues, but a a quick glance shows me that the map may not be entirely fictitious:
  • this map and this map show a much smaller Kurdish area.
  • However, Arabic Wikipedia shows that places like Afrin, which are not part of these two maps, have a majority Kurdish population.
Generally, the response in such situations is to create your own map (or find an existing map) and replace the first one with the new map. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:38, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Hey!

Would you just stop deleting my files when you don't even speak German to contact me?! I signed all files well, so just stop your deleting!

If not, then CALL A GERMAN ADMIN TO CONTACT ME!! Otherwise, I'll write any e-mail to a few German admins to call them for help because I don't even understand what your problem with my files is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrStein (talk • contribs) 16:10, February 1, 2014‎ (UTC)

I've asked for a German-speaking administrator to assist us. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:14, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

I hope so. Very annoying to get thousands of e-mails and to be not able to respond to anyone because of language! --ChrStein —Preceding comment was added at 16:24, February 1, 2014‎ (UTC)

If you set your language preferences at Special:Preferences, then most of the messages you receive will then appear in German. Only hand-typed messages will be in another language. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:28, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

I did. Just stop your deleting requests so that I can talk with a German admin because I can explain him that the files are OK. I'm really tired of uploading everything five times because any admin deletes it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrStein (talk • contribs) 16:36, February 1, 2014‎ (UTC)

Alternatively, you could, you know, actually follow Commons' rules and provide proof of permission (assuming you have it). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:37, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

I can't see any reason why I should now e-mail a hundred of people (by the way, most of them agreed that I could use their files) only because my copyright texts are written in German. I will, sure, delete everything (again), when a German admin (who can read and understand my Copyright texts) can explain that it's necessary. But as I see it was never necessary before, I don't understand the reason. [And it's really annoying for most of Wikipedia-Users I know, that any work done for this encyclopedia is not regarded as positive, always being deleted without even any explanation why.] So I'll just wait for a mail from any German-speaking admin to talk with him about the 100,000 deleting requests which I regard mostly as incorrect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrStein (talk • contribs) 16:49, February 1, 2014‎ (UTC)

Hi! I came across this edit of your bot. What's wrong with using of this template? --DixonD (talk) 11:34, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

The transcluded template indicates that it is the work of a Japanese organization that published it 50 years ago. Therefore the original upload date on English Wikipedia is irrelevant. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:18, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

I've put the image back to the pre-war version. Beta Wikiversity

Hello Magog. I was told to contact you should I have any problems with {{User at project}} given the complex template code, so I'm writing this to you because I had some trouble with my recently transferred file File:Morning routines model.png, and the file contains a link to Beta Wikiversity which does not appear to be recognized properly by the template which is rendering it as "Wikimedia Commons". Could you perhaps take a look at the wikicode and see what went wrong with the link? Thanks, TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 12:27, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Should I ask someone more familiar with the template coding department to take a look at it then? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 20:54, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry; I missed your post altogether. I'll look into it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:21, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
The problem is the template isn't set up to handle Beta Wikiversity. You will probably have to create your own. Compare that with Template:User at wikivoyage old, which I created for similar reasons. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:15, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

I'm trying to look over the code now, but I'm wondering, how did you get the links for mediawiki.org to work? File:Gilles Dubuc (WMF).jpg suggests that it's possible to do this without the wikivoyage hack. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 03:36, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

OgreBot2 marking as uncategorized even though there are categories

See here. Doesn't it check whether categories were added since the upload? Lupo 07:25, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Uh oh. No idea why it's doing that. I'll research tonight. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:03, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
Sorry it's taking me a while to look into it. The current two most likely scenarios are this: 1) there was a hiccup in the Mediawiki result set, or 2) there is a bug of some sort in my code. Given that I've never seen this before, though, I'm hoping it's the former. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:41, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Doesn't need to mark a file as uncategorized if it has a category or a template for deletion. --Ikar.us (talk) 09:53, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

I don't understand. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:30, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
The file page included Template:Duplicate, and the categories had been removed therefore. The bot shouldn't complain about missing categories in this case. Doesn't hurt much, because the file will be deleted sooner or later, but until then it shows up among the files needing categorization. --Ikar.us (talk) 23:45, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

OTRS email. Przeczytaj COM:OTRS/pl i Commons:Pozwolenia. Jeśli możesz to przeslij z adresu twojej strony internetowej.
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:13, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Minor cleanup script issue

Minor issue with the cleanup script, apparently with files using the GFDL license template - see File:2006-06-23 - Upsall Grove.JPG for an example. In the attribution text for the license, the string "Listfiles/" is being included before the actual username. Kelly (talk) 07:42, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

This only occurred because you hit the cleanup JS button before you hit the cleanup TS one. Unfortunately, I don't have time or motivation to maintain the cleanup JS version, especially when I have nearly duplicate, and better written code in the TS version. If I do get around to updating the JS version, "stop incorrectly monkeying with the GFDL field" is in the top of my priorities. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:25, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks - like I said, not a big deal. I have been hitting the TS button first, but for some reason that one doesn't always include the "int-filedesc" header for me, so I was hitting the JS button after to include that. As always, your scripts are greatly appreciated and are a huge timesaver. Kelly (talk) 01:02, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

The TS version doesn't include the filedesc header because it tries to be very conservative; a user may not want that header when uploading the file. However, the JS version has to be reviewed by hand, so if someone adds the header, then the fault falls on them, not me. But yes there are a few major bugs in the JS, and I need to just buck up and fix them. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:47, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Giorgi Balakhadze again

User:Giorgi Balakhadze is edit warring again, and this time to get images renamed because it uses a name in a language they don't like. This was done on File:Tkvarcheli mountains.jpg and File:Ural with coal Tkvarcheli.jpg. In both cases I reverted with the note that "A name in a different language is not an "obvious error"", and in both cases they reverted this without even leaving an edit summary. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 01:21, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Inexplicable. Is there a cultural disconnect or a language misunderstanding here? I'm about to block this user for a while. Again. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:43, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

OgreBot 2 cleanup error

User_talk:Magog_the_Ogre/Archive_8#OgreBot_2_cleanup_error - it still happens, see [4]. This file was not moved from Wikipedia. A newer (official and slightly different) version of it was extracted and put on Commons. Ogrebot added transfer information and old files to it. Thanks, The Haz talk 04:16, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Well it doesn't hurt to store the old versions in the history there for reference, in case we need them again. If the changes are substantial enough that they shouldn't be in the same image, then it shouldn't be marked as {{NowCommons}}. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 13:49, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Not a problem. I was just curious as it's different (for me) compared to when I am "officially" moving files to Commons. Thanks, The Haz talk 05:44, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Sometimes people get mad when I overwrite "their" uploads because they don't feel like the author anymore, or because it doesn't show up in their upload history. Glad we're not dealing with that. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:46, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Communication failure

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nikolaus_Kopernikus-thumb.jpg

It is almost impossible to make any sense of what you have said about the licence error on this image, and how to correct it, without a level of technical knowledge which is beyond me.

It would be helpful in your emails to have a "Reply" link which enables a response to be made to the place and in a form which might reach you, and/or make sense to you.

As it is, the obvious error that I have made is responded to in a manner which encourages people with limited understanding of the wiki environment, simply to download stuff, do what they want with it, and fail absolutely to give commons.wikimedia and its contributors the credit for which they are surely due, let alone give anything back to the community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidhop (talk • contribs)

File:Nikolaus_Kopernikus-thumb.jpg has been deleted as it was simply a (smaller) duplicate of File:Nikolaus Kopernikus.jpg. Hope that helps. --Túrelio (talk) 20:02, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
@Davidhop: the message I left on your talk page was because you uploaded a scaled down image of a painting and gave it the {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} license instead of the correct one, which is {{PD-old}}. You made a similar mistake here: [5]. This was a friendly way on my part to ask that you try to copy the license correctly, rather than just choose a boilerplate license from the dropdown which doesn't correspond to the correct license.
If you have any questions on how to perform an upload, let me know, or you can ask at the help desk. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:13, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

File deletion guide

I am sorry, I have to post this .I want to delete/(nominate for deletion) the older version image file of " File:Nagbhushan patnaik.jpg "as the same has been substituted by a newer version. Being a newcomer to wikipedia, I could not nominate for deletion my specific older version image file dated 27.2.14 of "File:Nagbhushan Patnaik.jpg".Please help me. Hpsatapathy (talk) 01:54, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

We don't have a formal process for that. In the future, you could just mark it with the text {{speedy|Please remove '''ONLY''' the old version(s) of this file, because I uploaded them in error.}}. Then watch the file and make sure the administrator doesn't delete the whole thing by accident. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:50, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

AudioVision 14 Image Deletion

Magog -

The image which I posted of the AudioVision 14 Display is from my personal collection of images of products which I designed, or was involved in the design of, during the ten years I was employed as a Product Designer at Apple between 1986 and 1996. If you have a problem with that, or any other Apple product images which I post, please send me a message before you delete them. DWmFrancis (talk) 21:38, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

@DWmFrancis: if you took the photograph as part of your work as an employee of Apple, then it was a work for hire, and Apple owns the copyright. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:05, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Any news? --Leyo 19:18, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

No. I'm sorry, this hasn't been on my priority list. I'll bump it up one level (from "I don't feel like it" to "needs to get done sooner rather than later"). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:44, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
OK. Just let me know as soon as it becomes available again. --Leyo 22:44, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Magog, you reviewed the licence of this image, but I have noticed that the source file is a much lower resolution than the cited source. I can't see this high resolution image on his website. Also, are you sure that the licence is suitable? Did you get in touch with the photographer? Cheers Smartse (talk) 20:48, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes, the resolution is lower on the site, but I couldn't find a higher resolution floating anywhere else around the internet, and this was clearly an attempt by the site to release the image (in all its resolution integrity) under a free license. And I don't think I need to get in touch with the photographer if the website explicitly releases the image under a license. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:01, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

But the copyright belongs to the photographer right? I can't just upload other people's photos to my own site and then release them under a free licence. I'll get in touch with the photographer. Smartse (talk) 16:01, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Correct. But it seems like a good bet to me that http://bradgrosse.com has the publication rights for an image of Brad Grosse. If you have reason to believe that there is tomfoolery occurring, by all means investigate. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:28, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello, sorry if I don't write at the righ place, I'm a very beginner (and French speaking). You wrote a notice saying that the poster "bombes à retardement and Gentilly Or Not To Be could be removed because of right issues. The right owner has already sent the usual email to permission-commons-wiki. I hope everything will be find. I put a notice on the page where the posters have been posted OTRS. Thanks for your help — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2avenue (talk • contribs) 15:20, March 14, 2014‎ (UTC)

OK. In the future, if you upload something from someone, you can mark the image with this code: {{subst:OP}}. That way we know we're waiting for the OTRS team and we should be conservative about deletion. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:25, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Wrong template?

Confused by your {{Autotranslate|1=|2=|base=Blocked user}} template at User talk:AnythingToDo: it doesn't say anything about the block reason or the time of the block, and it looks more like a template for a userpage than a message for a talk page. Did you use the wrong template, or are the block templates here simply different from the block templates at en:wp? Nyttend (talk) 01:42, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

It's one of the two block templates on VisualFileChange. I don't like the other one because:
  • It requires parameters that the user can just as easily see in the block message
  • It requires parameters be written in English, which breaks the internationalization.
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:21, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
To be clear, the block templates leave something to be desired. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 10:01, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

The {{user at project}} template

Your bot seems to have changed a bit of information here and here, and it looks like it substituted the information inside the {{User at project}} template (aesthetics-wise though I prefer [[:v:en:Main Page|en.wikiversity]] instead of [http://en.wikiversity.org en.wikiversity]). I was wondering if you plan on deprecating the {{User at project}} template soon and where the announcement for this is. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 01:53, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

I've never noticed that bug; thanks. As for why it substituted it, it's because it makes no sense to use user at project in an English sentence, lest it get converted to a weird mix of the local language and English; it's supposed to then convert it to {{Original uploader}} when applicable. Copyright violation

Good morning,

I've noticed several times that the images i uploud are marked as copyright violations. I must say that since my first two images got deleted, i started looking for non-copyrighted-pictures, or sending emails to author of the mentioned picture. However, my pictures are still being deleted, despite i have the right to upload them.

Anyways, i'll take some kind of screenshot or give some the details of the autor's authorizing to use the picture so they don't keep being deleted.

Good day.

OgreBot 2: Strange edit

Not quite sure why OgreBot 2 made this edit, which removed the author information from the file description page. — SMUconlaw (talk) 10:08, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

The bot (correctly) detected that, given the templates present on the page, the author was not in fact the original uploader. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:32, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Hmmm, OK. I didn't realize the author parameter could only be used in one way. — SMUconlaw (talk) 07:55, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Well it can be used for whatever you want; it's a wiki. But it makes absolutely zero sense to put the person who happened to find it online as the author - and worse, it might be confusing to end users. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:25, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

True. I'll update it. — SMUconlaw (talk) 09:27, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Ipboptions

Hi! If it actual, you can add the line "3 years" in MediaWiki:Ipboptions. Regards, /St1995 10:44, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Oddly, it keeps interpreting "3 years" as "3 years, 6 hours, 32 minutes and 24 seconds." Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:26, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Kindly undo

your deletion of File:INS Makar.jpg, as permission to use it has been obtained from the Indian Navy via OTRS, which was listed on the image page (which you may not have checked). See Template:Indian navy. Anir1uph (talk) 02:36, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

I saw the cc, didn't scroll further, then looked at the wiki code, and didn't see an OTRS marker. That the marker was contained in a subtemplate was an unlikely scenario I didn't consider. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:08, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Fewer

Your OgreBot keeps talking about "Users with 150 or less edits". Could you teach it to say "Users with 150 or fewer edits" please? Even bots ought to speak clearly, and as the number of users with under 150 edits can be clearly and specifically enumerated, they are "fewer" and not "less" than the specified qualifying numeral. Thank you. Timothy Titus (talk) 00:56, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

|Wikisource=:s:fr:Livre:{{PAGENAME}}

Why do you pull down |Wikisource=:s:fr:Livre:{{PAGENAME}} on the uploaded books. It is not necessary and it is a source of mistakes for the uploader when he uploads a new volume ? Pibewiki (talk) 17:36, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Which page are you talking about? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:51, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
i.e. File:Encyclopédie moderne - 1823, T01.djvu Thanks for your attention Pibewiki (talk) 19:37, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Because {{PAGENAME}} always shows as Encyclopédie moderne - 1823, T01.djvu. If you are uploading a new volume, you should use CommonsHelper. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:58, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry ; it is just a note about the bot. If the bot does't go on the page, {{PAGENAME}} will stay on the page and i'll not have to verify. The model is right. If the bot replace {{PAGENAME}} by the real name, the model can't change any more and cannot be used for an other file ; I'll have to verify and replace each time. Now, the function of the bot is to make the work more easy and not more complicated. You can have a look to the exemple File:Encyclopédie moderne - 1823, T01.djvu. Best regards Pibewiki (talk) 18:21, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Can't you just use the old version of the page? I'd really prefer not to have to change this functionality if at all possible. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:04, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

OK That's the right solution. Thanks. Pibewiki (talk) 11:48, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

FAQ

Hello Magog the Ogre I have a question, I want to enrich photos about Georgian city of en:Rustavi, as you can see on category (Category:Rustavi) practically there is no cityscapes, meanwhile as during last years the city has changed and its main streets have been restored. But unfortunately I have no my photos, Georgian Wikipedia has FB page, and I am going to ask Georgian Wikipedia users from that page, that if someone has opportunity to take some photos of that city and give us by free license. I am interested if it will be okay? My friend said that it's ok when as source I'll put that person's FB link who gave us those photos. I know there is also OTRS but it's more difficult and not clear for me, if that way is ok, I prefer first one by FB. --g. balaxaZe 16:35, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

@Giorgi Balakhadze: If the person knows how, they should make the photograph public, and state in the description the license on the file. Otherwise, they can send an email to OTRS. The instructions don't exist in Georgian, but they do in Russian, which many Georgians can read IIRC: Commons:OTRS/ru (aside: you're welcome to translate it into Georgian for your compatriots).
