Did I make a mistake on this upload?

Hello,

Sorry to bother you, but I was confused by the permissions and licenses on File:Pokhara world peace pagoda.jpg. I think it's eligible for transfer, but the CC-BY was incomplete so I may have been wrong.

Also, if there is a template or something to show how to word the upload form, I could follow it and save you the cleanup work.

Best wishes, Soranoch (talk) 17:45, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I don't understand your problem. The image is already on Commons. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:34, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Sorry! Someone deleted it on Wikipedia after I wrote the above, so I guess I didn't make a mistake. Thanks for answering. Best, Soranoch (talk) 23:17, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Another question

Hello,

I uploaded File:Traditional South Indian Parotta.png from the Wikipedia, and even though I studied its permissions, I'm not quite clear if I made the right decision.

You are the nicest guy, but I don't want to bother you with silly questions. Is there somewhere else I should be asking?

Many best wishes, Soranoch (talk) 13:29, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

You are correct; the image at English Wikipedia lacks proof of permission, because its license on Flickr has a non-commercial clause, which is incompatible with Wikimedia projects.
You can ask me questions; I don't mind, but I might not respond immediately. If you'd like a more prompt response, you can try COM:VP (Commons village pump) or w:WP:MCQ (Wikipedia Media Copyright Questions). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:58, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! I don't mind waiting. Best, Soranoch (talk) 18:07, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi! We're having a little conflict. :-)) You deleted File:Family Guy Logo SVG.svg as fair use and I kept File:American Dad Logo.png as below TOO. What do we do now? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 23:20, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

IMO the American Dad logo is creative enough to cause sufficient doubt to warrant deletion. This was found to be copyrightable in the US. Regardless, the television in the Family Guy logo makes it more complex than the one you kept, so there isn't necessarily a contradiction here. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 08:59, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Seeing the CCC-Logo for the first time, I think American Dad is above TOO and so are tons of other logos. Brrrr... guess there's a mass-delete coming our way. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 17:26, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Note that page 1 of the PDF file contains two logos: "CCC LOGO" (File:CarCreditCity(SVG).svg) which is below the threshold of originality and "CAR CREDIT CITY LOGO" (similar but with an extra border and with the words "CAR CREDIT CITY" above) which is above the threshold of originality.
If you find a suspiciously complex logo, you could search for it at [1]. If you find a registration for the logo, then you know that the opinion of the copyright office is that the logo is copyrighted. If you don't find any registration, then you don't know anything as it isn't mandatory to register a logo in the first place. --Stefan4 (talk) 17:55, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
@Hedwig: Commons has had a problem with keeping logos over the threshold in their home nations for a while now. It's partly because a disproportionate number of regular Commons users come from continental Germanic nations, which have a high threshold, and they have trouble extending that to foreign copyrights; it's also partly because users hate to see their images deleted, and as such have a vested interest in them being kept. It's something I've been fighting with little success; I simply don't have the time and resources to nominate every bad logo on Commons. Regardless, keep me informed. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:55, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Aye, I reverted my keep and deleted the logo. Thanks for your input, and of course thanks to Stefan4 as well. Much obliged. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 23:47, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

How to do deletion request -- speedy or not?

Hello,

Did I do these right? Or should I have used a "speedy" template that now I've come across?

The images seem to me clear violations, so should I not clutter up the Deletion requests queue?

Best, Soranoch (talk) 16:55, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

It's always a judgment call whether you use DR or mark it as speedy deletion. If you're 100% sure it's a copyright violation, then you mark it as speedy; if you have any doubt, then you go with DR. You did fine with the DR this time.
Also, if you're doing a lot at once that should be deleted for the same reason, you can go through Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request. That's the "proper" way to do things, but honestly if it's less than about 10, a lot of users (including me) will just go with the script which lists them separately, because it's easier. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:50, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks so much! Best, Soranoch (talk) 16:08, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

"User Orrling of Haifa.jpg" to "Orrling.jpg" can't move back

Hello. I just saw you were performing some admin functions earlier and I need assistance in a strange problem, check the file in the title: another user now recently has moved it to a different filename whereas I, would like to actually retain the original name, as the file's uploader; and am not happy with the unreasoned renaming altogether. So I left a message down the mover's page, expecting it would be respected. However, 4 days on - it has not been attended, and so I tried to use my own mover's permission but sadly somehow I appear to fail in completing that move back to the old name. Kindly solve this with your upgraded technical tools. Thank you. Orrlingtalk 21:49, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Deletion requests related to File:WMMS-HD2, W256BT logo.png

Hello. Should these files be deleted from the Commons? I opened a discussion at WP:NFCR thinking File:WMMS-HD2, W256BT logo.png, a similar logo, likely qualified as PD-TEXT. However, the resulting consensus was that the "99X" file did not qualify as free. Based on the growing consensus at the NFCR, I requested deletion for these logos below. However, Jameslwoodward (another Commons admin) decided to keep these logos. The whole issue seems to center around one's interpretation of the phrase "mere typographic ornamentation". I'm just looking for some sort of consistency here. Thanks. Levdr1lp / talk 17:32, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello; thanks for asking for clarification. I was personally going to wait out the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:WMMS-HD2, W256BT logo.png until I made a decision on the other logos. I agree that consistency would be agreeable; if the decision was to keep, and I thought the closing admin used sound judgment, I was going to ignore those files. If the decision was to delete, I was going to nominate those as well. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:35, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good. Levdr1lp / talk 17:40, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Would you have any concerns about uploading this show logo? As far as I can tell, the only possible problems are the slight curves found on the upper right side of the vertical black bar and the lower left corner of the red trapezoid background to "COX". Thanks. Levdr1lp / talk 23:21, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

I'd prefer of you could ask these questions at COM:VPC. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:25, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

No problem. I only asked about this specific file because it seemed directly relevant to the above topic (99X logo, Rock Nation logo, etc.). I thought that running this by you might save the trouble of another possible deletion request. Levdr1lp / talk 01:44, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

I do not upload files if I have any doubt whatsoever that a court could find in favor of the company; this seems like common sense for a number of reasons for me. Other users prefer to push the envelope; I cannot stop them from doing so, and I would be constrained by the community even if I tried. What's more, if I advise you to upload content, and then the company objects, then I could be on the hook legally. So unless a case is a thousand and one percent obvious, I will probably not recommend that you upload it (unless I have some other reason which supersedes my above concerns). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:54, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
I do not wish to push the envelope, and I intend to take this to the Village Pump ASAP. I wasn't looking for a recommendation to upload so much as I was looking for a clear reason *not* to upload. Levdr1lp / talk 02:09, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Logo of Government of Maharashtra

Hey Magog,

I tried uploading logo of Government of Maharashtra on Wikimedia Commons but it seems your bot has deleted it..

Please refer to this page: https://www.maharashtra.gov.in/1081/Disclaimer-and-Policies , which says "Material featured on this portal may be reproduced free of charge in any format or media without requiring specific permission. This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not being used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context. Where the material is being published or issued to others, the source must be prominently acknowledged. However, the permission to reproduce this material does not extend to any material on this site which is identified as being the copyright of the third party. Authorisation to reproduce such material is obtained from the copyright holders concerned."

Please help me upload this logo as its my own state that I hail from.. and our Wikipedia page of Maharashtra lacks that logo..

I assure its totally free, but you also make sure by visiting the link I cited above.

I would encourage yourself to either, fully explain why I can't log these photos which I own the rights to and have already placed on my own website, or simply admit that you are greatly skilled at deleting files on the internet and might have made an error in your finesse. I can tell that you get a lot of things done well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tylermacmore (talk • contribs) 06:31, November 4, 2013‎ (UTC)

I am willing to admit that I make many mistakes, because policing Commons for copyright problems is in fact an inexact art. But before we even talk about copyright, can you explain to me how File:High-functioning retard, Jamey Blaze, HIIMWATERDRAGON, Water Dragon.jpg is anything other than a clear attack image against its subject, or how calling the subject a "fucking corpse" (link) is anything other than the same? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:22, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

I highly appreciate the intended force of justice but I need you to know that Jamey Jean Blaze is my roommate. These texts are his own quotes that I have permission to collect for his upcoming wiki page. I'll see him today and have him notified. Another contact point for yourself may be his email (HIIMWATERDRAGON@gmail.com) or his Facebook (facebook.com/jameyblaze), to show him the pictures he's already seen and approved of.

The subject is not being called a "fucking corpse" in the second image you mentioned (link). He is saying that he feels like he's "fucking a corpse"

What should I do with this category situation?

Hello,

I was working on Category:Miran when I discovered a smaller category Category:Miran (China). Since it had only a few images in it, and since the enwiki commonscat went to Category:Miran, I emptied Category:Miran (China) into Category:Miran.

Now I'm thinking that Category:Miran (China) might perhaps be the better name. What do you think? Thanks, Soranoch (talk) 22:49, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

p.s. What is "cat-a-lot" supposed to do? I tried it once with bad results and so had to spend a long time recategorizing a bunch of images. And why does it appear sometimes but not others? Thanks again, Soranoch (talk) 22:55, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

I'm not very good with categories; try asking at COM:HD where they might know more about how to handle them. As for cat-a-lot, it's a product for the technologically geeky among us who want to add/change/remove a category en masse of multiple pages at once. See Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:16, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes. I disabled it because it's adding literally thousands of images which are unrelated to equestrian sports. As stated at User talk:OgreBot/gallery, I will do this if it looks like it's adding too many files. I can certainly readd the service, but you will need to let me remove some subcategories. Please give me an idea which ones I can remove. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:52, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Okay, thank you for information. I know the problem, but I don't understand why there are so much wrong images. If you remove the subcategories that cause the fault, I would be realy happy. --Nordlicht8 (talk) 21:20, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

With a little help of an other wikipedia user now I know the problem. I think I have eliminated it. Could we please test it for one or two days? With best regards --Nordlicht8 (talk) 18:05, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Before I begin, the proper solution is not to change categories unless the categories are definitely wrong. The proper solution is to opt-out the categories. I can do that. Would you like to opt-out certain categories? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:48, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
I understand what you mean. But the problem was two categories, which were definitely in the wrong category. Category:Horsewomen and Category:Horsemen (with subcategories like "Mounted police in Chile‎", "Knights in art‎" or "Friedrich Wilhelm I of Brandenburg‎") was part of part of the "Category:Equestrians" before. I have changed them to "Category:Riders". Now the "Category:Equestrians" is only for sportspeople who ride horses, as it is already at en:Category:Equestrians or de:Kategorie:Pferdesportler. --Nordlicht8 (talk) 14:37, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I deleted this file, and then found at the talk page your request to place an undeletion request on en.wp for fair use upload. That was from 2011. I can easily undelete the file now, but I am not sure what would be the best way to proceed, since I would not be able to fill in a fair use rationale.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:54, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:22, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of my COMAND display picture

Hi,

You -twice- deleted my picture File:COMAND NTG3 Display.JPG and stated "(Derivative of non-free content)" as the reason. This makes no sense and breaks an image link I had just added to another page. This picture was taken by me and in my own car (as should have been pretty clear from the metadata) and should not have been deleted. --GuidoGY (talk) 17:46, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Please read this essay on why the image had to be deleted: Commons:Derivative works. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:47, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

You are mistaken, this picture does not constitute a derivative work and I am legally entitled to publish it.

You have permission from the automobile manufacturer to publish a screenshot from the automobile dashboard display? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:51, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

I do not need the manufacturer's permission to take this picture of a display in my own car or indeed to use it for the purpose it has been used. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GuidoGY (talk • contribs) 17:55, November 3, 2013‎ (UTC)

Yes, you do. Please read the essay I linked above. Specifically, this part: COM:DW#If I take a picture of an object with my own camera, I hold the copyright to the picture. Can't I license it any way I choose? Why do I have to worry about other copyright holders?. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:58, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

I have read that and you are wrong in your interpretation of this being applicable. Indeed, it would require many pictures currently on Wikimedia to be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GuidoGY (talk • contribs) 18:02, November 3, 2013‎ (UTC)

If you'd like to ask for a second opinion, I will restore it, and you can ask at our copyright discussion board. Also, English Wikipedia in particular has a narrow set of exceptions where they allow fair use, which Commons doesn't allow, so you might be thinking of those images. Finally, there are some copyright violations on Commons, granted, but that is simply because we are short-staffed on upload patrollers. If we come across them, we delete them. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:06, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

It should not have been deleted without checking in the first place and even then I maintain this simply shows a feature in the vehicle with a utilitarian function and as such the image does not constitute a derivative work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by [[User:|]] ([[User talk:|talk]] • contribs) 18:13, November 3, 2013‎ GuidoGY (UTC)

Please ask for a second opinion at COM:VPC. I am quite confident they will agree that the item is copyrightable. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:15, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
It's a pity this spiralled out of control; he seemed like a decent sort. We could use a single-purpose blog of (c)-rage to lighten the mood for such editors :-)
Question: Is it not acceptable on Commons now to directly advise people to upload an image as fair use on en:wp when that's their end goal? This is a class of images all of which are welcome there under those terms. --SJ+ 04:58, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
FWIW, I agree completely that it's a pity. It would have been nice if he simply could have acknowledged "oops, I guess these people have more experience in copyright, and I was wrong. Life sucks, but you don't always get what you want" instead of refusing to listen to logic and going on a multiproject tear in a misguided effort to prove a point and punish everyone for refusing to accede. Regardless, the image would not have qualified as fair use on English Wikipedia, and probably not on any other wikis either (although honestly some wikis are notably worse at enforcing their fair use rules than others). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:01, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
You don't think? I can't see the image now, but a software screenshot is generally fair use when there's no substitute available, iirc. --SJ+ 05:12, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Actually, I hadn't realized it was illustrating the software in question. I thought it was just being used in an article about the vehicle. We might see some blowback (IMO, many English Wikipedia editors are consistently overzealous about enforcing w:WP:NFCC#8), but I think it just might work as fair use. However, I'm not entirely sure I'd want to undelete the guy's picture anymore and use it again; he seems to want his pictures to stay deleted, and he has already threatened to take me to court. OgreBot source code

Hi Magog the Ogre - just curious, is the source code for the OgreBot gallery tool publicly available somewhere? If so can you give a link to it? darkweasel94 23:45, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Er, it's not publicly available. May I inquire as to why you ask? It might be easier to try to incorporate your request into my own bot if that's what you're hoping for. If necessary, I can try to make it available to you, but I took all sorts of weird shortcuts like modifying Peachy and writing functions in ways which I will understand but which make it difficult to read and maintain by other people. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:09, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Ok. I was just curious about how it works and if it could be extensible to make even cooler things like notifying people when a file is moved into a certain category tree, or when a file in that category tree is nominated for deletion. But I'm not particularly good at PHP, so if it isn't code you'd want to show others, it will probably not be useful to me. :) However, now that I have your attention - yes I do have a little feature request, is it possible for you to automatically add __NOINDEX__ to my gallery pages? It's not urgent or anything at all but if you have time, you could prevent image search engines from finding files in these galleries when searching for my username. In any case thank you for this very useful service! darkweasel94 09:37, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

@Darkweasel94:: the NOINDEX is ✓ Done. The answer for those questions: yes, it would be doable, but it would need a substantial rewrite. Right now, the bot only looks at new files uploaded. To look at categories, it would have to look at literally every single page that was edited the day. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:25, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

OK. You listed the source as ImageShack, and listed the author as GTP534, so I assumed you aren't the author, and that you just made up a false license on the fly (sadly, this happens frequently) Are you GPT534? If so, I can undelete the file. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 13:22, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

No, im not the author, but as I stated, he gave me his permission to use the said picture.Space alligator (talk) 05:58, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

I've restored the file and left instructions on how to send us the proof of permission which y8ou received. Please note the copyright holder needs to explicitly choose a license in writing; things like "go ahead and use it" or "it's OK for Wikipedia" are insufficient. Problem with category

Hello,

I listed Category:Burj Khalifa fountain at Commons:Categories for discussion/2013/11. Hope I did it the right way. I created the category according to the article history, and I was completely wrong. There is already Category:The Dubai Fountain which correctly includes fountain images. This one contains only images of persons that are in a great number of other categories. I'm unsure of the reliability, since the images don't seem to be in use on article pages. Best, Soranoch (talk) 19:08, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello. We still have two problems with the file: 1) was it originally published in Argentina? and 2) The item appears to be non-free in the US. Per Commons:Hirtle Chart, images from Argentina must have been published prior to 1976 to be free in the US, where they must be according to Commons policy. If you cannot use TUSC for whatever reason, could you please at least use the tool to generate the upload text? The text you're generating right now has been incorrect - it doesn't always properly attribute the author, it's usually giving the wrong license, and it is leaving out the upload log which is useful for tracking the image. Copyleft images

What gave you the idea that the files I scanned and uploaded were copyright violations? Did you not believe the explanation that I wrote that I created them? Why did you delete them? And why didn't you wait to hear back from me before deleting them? An explanation would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xardox (talk • contribs) 04:51, November 24, 2013‎ (UTC)

Hello. You specifically wrote on the images "All rights reserved." What's more, just because they used the word "copyleft" does not mean that the artist is releasing the images as free in a way compatible with CC-BY-SA, especially given that he used the term before it had its modern meaning. In fact, he seemed to be mostly using the term in jest. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:20, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Good lord you are dense.

First: Educate yourself by reading these article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyleft and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Rites_Reversed

Specifically the part that says "All rights reversed is a phrase that indicates a release of copyright or a copyleft licensing status. It is a pun on the common copyright disclaimer "All rights reserved", a copyright formality originally required by the Buenos Aires Convention of 1910."

The go back and look at the images and the explanation I wrote. I specifically wrote the phrase "All rights REVERSED", not "All rights RESERVED".

REVERSED: verb, past tense: reversed; past participle: reversed. move backward. "the truck reversed into the back of a bus" synonyms: back, back up, drive back/backward, move back/backward

The word "reversed" has a totally different meaning than the word you mistook it for, "reserved":

RESERVED: adjective, 1. slow to reveal emotion or opinions. "he is a reserved, almost taciturn man" synonyms: reticent, quiet, private, uncommunicative, unforthcoming, undemonstrative, unsociable, formal, constrained, cool, aloof, detached, distant, remote, unapproachable, unfriendly, withdrawn, secretive, silent, taciturn; 2. kept specially for a particular purpose or person. "a reserved seat" synonyms: booked, taken, spoken for, prearranged;

And "the artist" in question is ME. Did you not read the explanation I wrote, that explained quite clearly that I stuck the sticker on the envelope, and that I drew on the envelope? I am the artist in question, who originally created the artwork on the envelope that I sent to Richard Stallman years ago, and that I more recently scanned and uploaded. I already explained that, but you failed to comprehend or believe it. Do you think I am a liar? What is your evidence that I am lying? Can'y you clearly read my name "Don Hopkins" and even most of my address written on the envelope?

All the sticker says is "Copyleft (L)", as you can plainly see. And "Copyleft" is NOT the same as "Copyright", in the same way that "reversed" is not the same as "reserved".

The WORD "Copyleft" is NOT copyrighted. And the phrase "All rights reversed" does not bestow a copyright. In fact it means exactly the OPPOSITE of that. Does the irony of mistakenly claiming that a scan of a "Copyleft" sticker is copyrighted totally escape you? Do you see how totally ridiculous your mistake is? Do you hear a "WHOOSHING" sound? That is the sound of you totally missing the point.

It is a joke, get it??? The phrase "All rights reversed" is commonly used after the term "Copyleft". I guess you have never heard of Richard Stallman or Project Gnu or the Free Software Foundation or Copyleft or anything that the image is about or that I wrote about in the explanation of the rights that I wrote, because all of that went totally over your head. WHOOSH.

So please restore the file, or offer some proof that I am lying.

Xardox (talk) 08:03, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Update: look, the justification you wrote for deleting all three images says, and I literally quote you literally quoting me: Copyright violation: "All rights reversed."

Here, I will copy and paste the text that I see on the pages to prove it to you, and you can of course go look yourself:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Front_of_the_envelope_with_the_%22Copyleft_(L)%22_sticker,_mailed_from_Don_Hopkins_to_Richard_Stallman_in_1984..jpg&action=edit&redlink=1

Now do you actually maintain that the PHRASE "All rights reversed" is copyrighted? Or that the WORD "Copyleft (L)" as printed on a sticker that I bought at a science fiction convention dealer's room copyrighted? The sticker says quite clearly that it is "Copyleft (L)", so I certainly don't believe that it's copyrighted. Do you?

Xardox (talk) 08:36, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

And some more information, if you have a problem getting your head around the fact that "All rights reversed" does not mean "All rights reserved". There is an apt analogy to the difference between "All rights reserved" and "All rights reversed", and the copyright symbol with a forwards (c), and a reversed (ↄ). The point is that "reversed" means "the opposite of", so using a "reversed" word or symbol does NOT mean the same thing as using the forward word of symbol. Stallman explains this in his article about copyleft:

It is a legal mistake to use a backwards C in a circle instead of a copyright symbol.
Copyleft is based legally on copyright, so the work should have a copyright notice.
A copyright notice requires either the copyright symbol (a C in a circle) or the
  word “Copyright”.

A backwards C in a circle has no special legal significance, so it doesn't make a
copyright notice. It may be amusing in book covers, posters, and such, but be
careful how you represent it in a web page!

In the exact same sense, and for the exact same reason, the phrase "All rights reversed" has no special legal significance, so it doesn't make a copyright notice. Do you get it now? The fact that you LITERALLY COPIED AND PASTED THE PHRASE "All rights reversed" into your illegitimate deletion justification, without bothering to actually read it or understand its significance was quite NEGLIGENT of you, and extremely IRONIC.

So in the future, please pay more attention to what you are doing, when you're engaging in your frequent frenzies of mass file deletions. And also, please take the time to CAREFULLY READ AND UNDERSTAND the justifications that people write when they upload the files, because obviously you ignored or did not comprehend mine, and still didn't believe what I wrote after I explained it to you. If you don't understand something, then for god's sake, just look it up. You know how to use Wikipedia. And engage the person who uploaded the file in a discussion, before deleting something whose origin and justification you are unable, unwilling, or too lazy to read and comprehend.

Xardox (talk) 16:19, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

I tried to re-upload the images, but it was not allowed, because they had been deleted.

Since you are responsible for negligently deleting the images, will you please save me the trouble of trying to upload them yet again, and prevent this from happening in the future, by undeleting the images, and replacing the explanation with the following more detailed explanation, since the previous explanation was not good enough for you to comprehend.

"Copyleft (L)" sticker, from an envelope mailed from Don Hopkins to Richard Stallman in 1984.jpg

Front of the envelope with the "Copyleft (L)" sticker, mailed from Don Hopkins to Richard Stallman in 1984.jpg

Back of the envelope with the "Copyleft (L)" sticker, mailed from Don Hopkins to Richard Stallman in 1984.jpg

This is a scan of the original "Copyleft (L)" sticker from an envelope that I (Don Hopkins) drew on and mailed to Richard Stallman in 1984.

It inspired Richard Stallman to use the term Copyleft for the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License GNU General Public License.

In his Stallman description of Project GNU, Stallman wrote: In 1984 or 1985, Don Hopkins (a very imaginative fellow) mailed me a letter. On the envelope he had written several amusing sayings, including this one: “Copyleft—all rights reversed.” I used the word “copyleft” to name the distribution concept I was developing at the time.

The envelope contained a 68000 manual that Richard lent to me while I was visiting Tech Square at MIT. I bought the sticker in the dealer's room of some random east coast science fiction convention (which RMS also frequented, as Eric S Raymond describes in his biography of RMS).

A couple of years after I mailed the envelope, RMS sent me this email telling me that he figured out what a copyleft is:

  Date: Wed, 25 Jun 86 12:45:28 EDT
  From: rms@prep.ai.mit.edu (Richard M. Stallman)

I figured out what a copyleft is.
It's the sort of thing that I put on GNU software and manuals.
The left-wing version of the copyright that rightists use
  to exploit the masses.

He then later used the term Copyleft when he wrote the GNU General Public License in 1989, and described it in his article: What is Copyleft?

I am both disappointed and relieved that St IGNUcius didn't incorporate anything else from that envelope into the mythology of his Free Software Religion, the Church of Emacs.

Ironically, this picture was originally removed from wiki commons in a negligent mass file deletion performed by Magog the Ogre, when he literally copied and pasted the phrase "All rights reversed" as the justification for removing it due to copyright violation, without bothering to actually read it, completely unaware of the irony or foolishness of his actions.

I (Don Hopkins) am the original author of this work. I drew the words and artwork on the envelope, and stuck the sticker on the envelope, and mailed it to Richard Stallman myself. The "Copyleft (L)" sticker is NOT copyrighted, by definition. Neither the sticker nor the envelope contains the words "All rights reversed". That phrase is commonly used by Stallman and others in the context of copyleft, but it appears nowhere on the original content. I added it to the comments of the file because it was funny, and it explicitly meant that the content was NOT copyrighted, and all rights were NOT reserved. So I request that other editors do not remove this because they are too lazy to actually read the copyright information that I provided as requested.

So here we go again. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION THIS TIME:

This image is Copyleft (L) 1984 by Don Hopkins. All Rights REVERSED.

I wrote and drew on an envelope, and stuck a "Copyleft (L)" sticker on it.

This image is Copyleft (L) 1984 by Don Hopkins. All Rights REVERSED.

Hi Magog. I see you have deleted an up-to-date version of the Moorcroft logo for copyright issues. Please can you explain how I update the logo without violating any copyright laws? (i.e. how was the previous image labelled?)
I see that you have also deleted the text I added . I do work for Moorcroft (and can therefore give permission on our image and content)and we find our Wikipedia page particularly out of date. There is no mention of our current business or much after the 1980's and some of the historical facts are incorrect.I hope you appreciate this can be very detrimental to our business and I would very much like to alter the text with your help.
Many thanks

Deletion of file: UnsupersizeMeDocumentaryPoster.jpg

Hi,

Thank you for sending me a prompt update about the status of the picture UnsupersizeMeDocumentaryPoster.jpg I just uploaded.

It is indeed the poster of a movie documentary called "Unsupersize Me" directed by Juan Carlos Asse. Mr. Asse is also the owner of the Web site http://www.unsupersizeme.com where this picture is located.

As I am creating a page about this documentary, I have explicitly asked Mr. Asse to grant me a written permission to upload in Wikimedia Commons and use this poster on Wikipedia. To this effect, Mr. Asse have used the official Wikipedia form for this purpose. Therefore, I have sent the completed and signed form of Mr. Asse to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as requested by Wikipedia.

Therefore, I would like you to please double-check with the person in charge of this end (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). If you wish to receive personally a copy of the signed permission of Mr. Asse, please let me know by providing me with an address at Kone.Mamadou@gmail.com

As soon as everything is alright, I would appreciate that you lift your ban on this picture and relaod it where it was.

Thank you for your cooperation.
