I blocked him because he continued to upload images to which he doesn't own the copyright after we asked him to stop. Unless he is the owner of Soso, he should not be uploading screenshots from it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:44, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I have obtained all the permissions for the images I have used and have forwarded evidence to permissions-en@wikimedia.org . I did it this morning. cheers, Lynda — Preceding unsigned comment added by Botanybay1788 (talk • contribs) 12:22, December 4, 2013‎ (UTC)

Hi! As you are an OTRS volunteer, I kindly request you to verify the copyright status of File:Ada Jafarey.jpg at your earliest. I need to speed up the process so that the copyright status of the file is clear when its DYK nomination is reviewed. Шαмıq  тαʟκ @ 15:41, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Help

Hi Magog,

I need your help. I want to add a photo of Choman Hardi to Wikimedia. The copyright holder allowed me to use it in Wikimedia but I cannot add it. Can you help me? What should I do? Regards,

Here is the permission message. I feel like stupid now, but I'm new here and I'm not a native English speaker. Medea Mēdeia (talk) 20:40, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

You've just provided me with a link to your inbox, which isn't going to do much good because I don't have your username and password (nor am I asking for it). Instead, here are instructions on how to forward permission to us: in English, in Farsi, in Turkish, or in several other languages you might speak natively (we don't have one for Kurdish or Arabic, though). If you have trouble understanding, then just go ahead and upload the image and mark it with {{subst:OP}} when you upload it, and I will further walk you through how to proceed. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:22, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Ok Magog, I can use Turkish language. It's my native language. Thank you. Medea Mēdeia (talk) 00:49, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

My pleasure. By all means let me know if you have any problems. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:45, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Magog, I've a problem with it:

The license is described by the following wikitext (must contain a valid copyright tag):

This does not seem to be valid wikitext, or does not contain a license.

I don't know what I should write into the blanks. The copyright holder allowed me but there is no title for it in "copright tag". Briefly, I don't know what to do. Medea Mēdeia (talk) 23:03, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

No problem, sorry for the confusion. Which page are you reading though? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:22, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

It says that this comes from English Wikipedia, but it doesn't say where Wikipedia got it from. A file with the same name was deleted as F8 on Wikipedia, so maybe you could check whether that file is the same file and whether source information is available on Wikipedia? --Stefan4 (talk) 11:01, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Question

Hi Magog,

I am new in Commons and have some problems with this image. The stamp was printed by the "Dirección General de Correos y Telégrafos" (1942), and scanned by me using a black background. The stamp itself (material) is in the public domain, according to the Argentine law (LEY 11.723 - Régimen legal de la propiedad intelectual) since the "Dirección General de Correos y Telégrafos" does no longer exist (it was renamed "Dirección General de Correos y Telecomunicaciones" in 1944 and then liquidated in 1972). More than 70 years have passed after the stamp was created and released. Please, let me know if this information is useful. Thank you for your kind cooperation.--Gabriel Sozzi (talk) 01:23, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Yes, it is useful. According to w:Wikipedia:Non-U.S. copyrights, works that were published over 50 years ago by an institution have fallen into the public domain. I've removed the unsourced tag, now that you've provided the source. Also, the Commons templates are a bit complicated, but I've added new information to the page and properly provided a license; you can use that as a template for future uploads when you perform. Thank you for asking. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:33, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Messina, spambots, etc

Hi Magog. The above sockmaster is an ongoing problem, with 11 new socks blocked today by me and Trijnstel. When I was CU, I used to check this guy's ranges every few days. I made a page for him on CU wiki. I know Trijnstel's busy, so you might want to run checks on those ranges now and then. Also, there's still a steady influx of 20 or 30 spambot accounts per day. I'm still blocking some of the obvious ones, but some require checks. Also, I can't get the IPs.

I had a collection of links at User:INeverCry/CU if you want to copy/past any. Filter #85 is the most active. I personally used only the user creation log 95% of the time, as Herby did. I still do, and I see the pattern accounts constantly. For me it was kind of a challenge of getting them before they spammed and/or hit the filters. If you have any questions about pattern accounts, feel free to ask. If you didn't already know, http://www.stopforumspam.com/search is your best tool for checking spambot IPs. Have fun. INeverCry 22:11, 12 December 2013 (UTC) I'm a CU again, so I can handle Messina and my other old buddies. If you need any help getting started with CU, let me know. INeverCry 18:21, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

OK, will do. At this point, I'm still just watching. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:09, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
The best advice I can give you is not to worry about making a few mistakes or missing something here and there as you start out. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions if you need to. I bugged the hell out of Trijnstel for my first couple of weeks. INeverCry 16:23, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:26, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
Saludo. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:42, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Hola Michel.

Hi, would you mind making the source code open? I am especially interested in the Regex the bot uses for cleanup. Feel free to send me a mail, if you prefer. Thanks. --McZusatz (talk) 15:51, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Ehh, I don't have any objection to that, per se, but the code is so ugly it will probably remind you more of an autistic teenager's poetry writing more than it will remind you of anything remotely readable. I will gladly provide you the source code, but it involves custom hacks to the Peachy framework, and an utter mess of spaghetti code. What in particular are you hoping to do with it, just for my knowledge? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:55, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Your technical help is needed

Hello, I'm addressing you as an Admin (indirectly picked this page searching a recently-active en-speaker on the admins' list). One of our users has earlier tonight took a "blessed initiative" and, somehow spotting on me while I was uploading my files and categorizing them, performed file-renaming to no less than 15 of my just-uploaded files as well as older ones, all invalid acts! I contacted them when I noticed the first four moves, assuming that they hadn't fully been aware that they were abusing their mover-rights, and let them know that I would pursue undoing those renames back to the original names. Unbelievably, right after giving me a not-so-mannered response - they continued renaming many other files from my plethora of contributed images, and I have no explanation to that other than either craziness or an odd will to damage my work. I've been volunteering here on Commons from 2009 and haven't experienced such a terrible thing. Needless to mention that these 15 (and probably still counting) renames, being all against any policy or rule we have here, are an absolute joke and are all reversible to the last one but obviously I can't do this myself as the rename process automatically converted the original names to redirects.. Very kindly fix it. Thanks.

Orrlingtalk 04:09, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Your best course of action is to take this up at COM:ANU. I am not dismissing your request: it's just an allegation of administrator misconduct needs to be discussed by everyone in the community, and not just one other administrator. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:15, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

You might have misunderstood my message. Please remane the above-listed files, to the respective names from which they were renamed earlier tonight, as indicated in the revision displays linked here. This is not an issue with this user or another. By the way what is the COM:ANU? Thank you. Orrlingtalk 04:21, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

If you want to know what ANU is, feel free to click the hyperlink and check it out. Also, I didn't really misunderstand. Wikimedia projects have constraints such that it's a really bad idea to reverse an administrator-level action of another sysop until there is community approval. Otherwise it becomes what we call "wheel warring." You will probably get some form of community consensus on your side if you take it to the noticeboards. Try this one if your not interested in complaining about the admin: COM:AN. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:42, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

What do you mean? Is this user a sysop? They've been abusing not only their filemover-rights but their administrator's ones too, this is what you're saying here. I don't catch it. And yes I've clicked the ANU already and well, my issue understandably doesn't belong to a user-problem forum but rather - once I've now texted three admins with the above pressing technical request - justifies the simple fulfillment of the request. I don't personalize users. If you're saying it would not be seen as appropriate if you do the job I am very sad. I think no serious editor will contest that it will be appropriate to retain an uploader's filenames. I'm one of the more credited contributors down here after all, it can't be like that with me needing to combat more. I mean, these files will be deleted if the abusive names remain since i'm coded as their author and simply can't authorize my works with names that break my consistency. Could you please alternatively delete the 15 redirects with the superceded filenames so I can carry out the restoration assignment myself. Orrlingtalk 05:46, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

No. We don't need your authorization for anything: the license you agreed to plainly states that you are releasing the copyright, and cannot retract it. Regardless, I've given you my answer. I'm not interested in theatrics; if you're unwilling to take the very modest step I've given you above, don't be surprised that I or anyone else will not help you. I think you have a reasonable complaint, but if you're more interested in cutting off your nose to spite your face and disputing the project to prove a point, then perhaps this is not the place for you. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 06:49, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Squali Genova

Hi, Mr Ogre. The logos I published are about the team I was press manager until it was exsisting. I got the permission about using the 1982 logo and I personally did the 2001 logo by the draw made for the team by Mr Gallucci (the artist who did it and a friend of mine). So if you kown about anyone that claims copyright for these logos, let me know who is, so I can make respect rights. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcogarrone (talk • contribs) 08:08, December 27, 2013‎ (UTC)

Hello. I've restored the images temporarily, and I've marked all of your images as missing proof of permission. The page explains how you can send proof of permission from the owner of the image copyrights to Wikimedia. If you would prefer to read the text in Italian, you can reference Template:No permission since/it. Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:58, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, please let me know why File:Kavi Samrat Viswanatha Satyanarayana with Nehru.png was deleted. What policies stop me from publishing it? --రహ్మానుద్దీన్ (talk) 03:57, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello. If you take a photograph of another photograph, then the entity who holds the rights to the original photograph still holds the rights to your derivative work (see COM:DW for an explanation). If you are the heir of the person who owns the copyrights to the photograph, then you have the right to release it. Otherwise, photographs remain copyrighted in India for 60 years after original publication (not creation, although sometimes they're the same year). Also, technically Commons isn't supposed to host any images that are non-free in the US either (for legal reasons only based off where the Wikimedia servers are located), meaning the photograph should have been published before 1941. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 12:24, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

I think its 1953 and not 1941 for India. And this image belongs to period 1947-50. --రహ్మానుద్దీన్ (talk) 12:27, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

about File:OldApps Logo.png

Hey Mogog,

Thanks for fixing reviewer.in.png image. I appreciate your help.

I have uploaded few more images which is as OldApps Logo.png which is originally crated by me but for a client. Does it mean my client have to upload licence on their site declaring my username/name in it for using logo image under cc license?

I'll be thankful if you can assist me further. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vishal1811 (talk • contribs) 15:26, December 28, 2013‎ (UTC)

No. The client can send proof of permission as described at Template:No permission since. If you have written permission from the client declaring that it is OK to release the files under a free license, you can forward them to that address as well. Images deleted

Dear Sir, I added a few pics on page 'Balbir Singh Sr.' in Nov and they are deleted by you now. I'm new to this, i've been going through various tutorials to understand how to add images. Now ive added sources with a bit correction but dont know is it sufficient. Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pkb1986 (talk • contribs) 19:33, December 16, 2013‎ (UTC)

The problem is that you chose the option to indicate that you are the person who took the photographs. Given that these all happened 60-70 years ago, that seems unlikely. You can upload any images that a) were first published in India, and b) were first published (not created) in 1945 or before. Then you can mark the images as {{PD-India}}. If the images were created after that, then the person who created them (or the person's heirs, or the company the person was working for) still holds the copyright over the images, and you cannot upload them to Commons. You may be able to upload them to English Wikipedia as fair use (if you want help with that, then you can ask at the English Wikipedia help desk).
The other possibility is if you find an image that was published after 1945, and you know who created it, then you can ask their permission to release the image as free. See Commons:Email templates.
I know this is a lot, but I'd rather give you a complete answer than a simple one if a complete one is necessary. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:58, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Dear Sir, thank you for the reply. These deleted pictures are from the autobiography of Balbir Singh Sr and he celebrated his 90th birthday on 31st December'2013. If required we can get letter signed off by him making these pics copyright free. ISBN Number of the book is 0706905423. While uploading these pics I added ISBN number as well but still 2 images are already deleted. References also has the link to the e-book. I really need your help to sought this. If any details are required, we will furnish those at the earliest. Thank you sir. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pkb1986 (talk • contribs) 19:54, December 31, 2013‎ (UTC)

Actually, the copyright belongs to the person who took the photograph, not the subject of the photograph, unless there was a legal document transferring ownership. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:34, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Harry Connick, Jr. photo

Thank you for your message. We will forward the supporting documentation which states that the photographer has given us permission to use the image within 7 days.

I have another issue that I am seeking guidance on: The new image of Harry Connick, Jr. with his daughter Kate does not appear correctly in Safari. It looks distorted as if it's being viewed through an x-ray machine. The image appears fine in IE and Firefox and it also appears OK in Safari on mobile devices (tested on iPhone and iPad). Do you know why this would be? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Btwillmott82 (talk • contribs) 14:51, December 31, 2013‎ (UTC)

That's probably a browser caching issue. Try clearing your cache. If that doesn't work, let me know which image it is and I'll try to take a look. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:32, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

To avoid further confusion, it may be best if you could provide permission through OTRS. That way you could upload any images with a template indicating the images are precleared. The best way would be to send us an email verifying that you are the site owner and that any images you contribute here are legitimate. The emails are completely private. See instructions in English and instructions in German. I hope this isn't too much of a hassle, but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Awesome! This is the sort of conversation i like - rather constructive. As you probably noticed already, i am a bit of a newbie at wiki and in respect to the wiki tagging. I am a developer though and are familiar with all the relevant scripting languages. I admit, i haven't bothered much - so far. But i think it is a matter of routine....Anyhow, whenever i do anything in the future and i have doubts, probs, suspicions etc., i contact one of you guys - before i get something up.

All the Best! Wikirictor —Preceding comment was added at 15:52, December 28, 2013‎ (UTC)

Absolutely. You can also ask at the help desk for clarification. I understand that we developers don't like to ask for help for things dealing with computers, but you can usually get a good response there. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:53, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I've been trying to clean up images that have been moved to Commons but could not be deleted from Wikipedia due to problems with licencing public domain logos in various countries (ie, those marked w:Template:NotMovedToCommons). Having seen these were tagged by you with expertise in copyright issues I thought they just needed to be raised as deletion requests to allow the Commons community (which I now know is understaffed) to decide if they should remain on Commons or not (however most of these date back to 2011 so surely they can't remain in this limbo state for ever). I raised a number of requests and all are currently marked "keep" with Template:PD-text-logo which is what these images had been originally licensed on Wikipedia as but changed to w:Template:PD-ineligible as part of your Common reviews.

The ones I knew should be OK, such as those from Canada (given the statement on COM:TOO that's it similar to the US and not like other Common law countries) I re-tagged as w:Template:NowCommons. The rest were from various countries including some from the UK and Australia (as you already are well aware are known to have very low levels for originality). I've received advice that I'm not applying PD-text-logo where I could and being too strict about it. However I'm concerned if I just restore these licences these will just get rejected again if I w:Template:NowCommons tag again since no community decision was reached and after all I know you tagged these for good reason.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Maybe I'm taking the wrong approach? Maybe these should be discussed someone else other then via deletion requests? Where I'm not sure because each logo is different, all from different countries. Any advice you can spare would be most appreciated.

Thanks again for all your efforts and help. Cube00 (talk) 15:33, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

I've commented on most of the deletions. I think the warnings that the administrators gave you were misplaced; you bring up good points on many of the images. Since I marked those images, we now know the threshold in Japan - we didn't at that time. I didn't even bother to comment on ex-communist Eastern European countries, because I can't even begin to hazard a guess at what copyright looks like there.
I'm not going to make friends any more than you are by !voting delete on some of those images, but I think it's the right call. Sadly, because Commons is so understaffed, neither I nor anyone else has been able to police such issues, and copyright violations (even obvious ones) abound in the logo categories. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 07:08, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

You deleted File:Col MAG Osmani.jpg in December. I was wondering if you could have a look at it to see what the source of the image was, or what the source of the copyvio was? Permiso

Hola. —Preceding comment was added at 00:40, January 6, 2014‎ (UTC)

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:19, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks again for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.165.175.235 (talk) 16:04, January 6, 2014‎ (UTC)

Yes, you can use it. The reason I initially deleted the images was because they didn't appear to have any educational value. Please understand that a depressingly large percentage of new users treat Commons as a photo album host to put up pictures of themselves and family, when that's not really our purpose. If, however, Mr. Mahinay is notable enough to have an article on one of the wikis (whether he is or not, I am not passing judgment right now), then he is in scope, and you don't have to worry about that. If you create an article, and it follows the criteria and sticks, then I can undelete the other images too. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:22, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Old version filemover minor bug

Hi, excellent job creating the "Old version filemover". One minor bug to report, when clicking the {{NowCommons}} button at the end, the wiki text inserted appears with a single double quote at the start of the file name which causes the template to fail to link correctly to the file e.g.{{NowCommons|1=File:"Kit right arm Estonia2.png|date=2014-01-06}}. Keep up the great work. Cube00 (talk) 12:00, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

OK. Apologies for coming across so forceful, but it didn't look like you were responding to anyone's comments on your talk page, and that's very frustrating for other members of the community like me. In particular, you marked the seal of Juneau as text logo, when it is probably copyrightable. Are you familiar with COM:TOO (en español también)? Also, you uploaded a drawing of the coat of arms of Turbo and claimed it as your own, when it is obvious you just saved someone else's work from the internet. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:50, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

its hard to know, because one thinks ,seals ,flags and other ones ,are works into the public domain if are of a city, village and country due to are not companies. For example -This file is in the public domain, because It is a public University logo-.something says government is people to people.--EEIM (talk) 21:45, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Just because a seal or flag belongs to a public entity, this doesn't mean it's public domain. In fact, most countries treat them as copyrightable. Also, even if the emblem itself is old, each representation of an old seal can garner a copyright: see Commons:Coats of arms. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:44, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:09, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Copyright info for an internet picture

Hi Magog, I am interested in this picture for an article I am working on, but could not find any copyright info. Could you pls. help me with this? Thanks.

The image was originally taken by Corbis,[18] a for-profit image organization that is extremely unlikely to release the rights to the photograph. Unfortunately, that means you cannot upload it to any Wikimedia projects. Instead, you will need to search for a different image among the free media resources, find an image that is non-free and whose author might be willing to release the rights (see Commons:Email templates), or find a way to take the photograph on your own. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:19, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
