Drink brands

Is it ok or not to upload pictures of these bottles? Of course my own pictures and not the ones from the website.

If you want me to write and explain in English instead, feel free to tell me to do so.(tJosve05a (c) 00:52, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Skottniss: Flaskor som "Cuba Cola" och "Sockerdricka" bör vara ok, eftersom det inte har nån bild eller grafik som kan ge upphovsrätt. (tJosve05a (c) 00:54, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Getty images claiming copyright

If you look here this seems quite clear. Vauxhall 14-6 1938 (16676746182).jpg. Eddaido (talk) 11:44, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Eddaido: We would need COM:EVIDENCE (to OTRS) from the Getty photographer themself to that affect. It also says "and/or royalty free", which does not mean "free of copyright, but "free to be used as you wish" (one term is about copyright and one is about cost. It is not clear to me. (tJosve05a (c) 11:48, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've since been through the other images belonging to that "photographer" and unless he is a travel agent who flies long distances and stays just a few days then I think it must be someone else's photo. I didn't notice that before. It (that picture) was important to me because it was the only image I could find of that particular model of car. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 23:01, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(tJosve05a (c) 18:30, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About the recent images you tagged for speed deletion...!

Why are you doing this? I understand you found som pictures that they could be signed as screenshots, but I don't understand these:

The same thing with this pictures!!!

Also is the same problem with this!

The rest of the files I can understand for it's deletion, but I need your response inmediately!--VictorPines (talk) 08:52, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@VictorPines: The flickr user is not the original copyright owner of the artworks displayed on the screens/poster/covers, they are merly taking a photo of them, making the Flickr photos derivatives of copyrighted material. The flickr users do not represent e.g. Konami, and can therefore not license Konami owned artworks under free licenes. See also the loosly related topic of COM:Flickrwashing. (tJosve05a (c) 08:55, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Josve05a is correct... the photos are copyright violations 'on Flickr', as they are derivatives of copyrighted works. - Reventtalk 09:05, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not talking you about the general pictures, I want a explanation of the pictures I listed to you.--VictorPines (talk) 09:08, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) @VictorPines: I'm talking about the specific images you listed. They are all photographs of copyrighted works, and thus derivatives of those copyrighted works. Per COM:DW, "In short, all transfers of a creative, copyrightable work into a new medium (i.e., from book to movie) as well as all other modifications of a work whose outcome is a new, creatively original work (e.g., from Shakespearean play into a modern rendition of a Shakespearean play with new wording or characters) are considered derivative works". If you (or the Flickr uploader) take a photograph that is specifically of a copyrighted work, the image is a derivative of that copyrighted work. See COM:Packaging, for example, which explicitly applies to several of these. - Reventtalk 09:19, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, but Some of the pictures I listed here doesn't have any sense! For example, you said on here there's no evidence that the photos belong to the author, but that's not truth!:

The author's name is Nelo Hotsuma:

The author has two names, DJ Damien and Chris

— Preceding unsigned comment added by VictorPines (talk • contribs)

@VictorPines: All three are images of packaging. The designs shown on the packaging are copyrighted by companies, and cannot be licensed by the photographer. The photographer can only license their own creative contributions to the image... that's what 'derivative work' means. - Reventtalk 09:35, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nelo Hotsuma may have taken the photo, but a company made the packages, and artwork on the boxes, and that company owns copyright ower any artwork on their packages. (tJosve05a (c) 09:38, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So, explain me about the rest of the images you didn't mention yet.--VictorPines (talk) 09:43, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@VictorPines: Again, the images are all derivatives of previously copyrighted material, and copyright violations on Flickr. - Reventtalk 09:54, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(more) Any photograph is a 'derivative work' of any copyrighted material that is depicted in it... it's only allowable if the copyrighted material is either licensed in a way that is compatible with the license of the photograph, or if certain legal exemptions apply (such as 'freedom of panorama', 'de minimis', or 'fair use' apply... fair use is not allowed on Commons, per a rule established by the WMF board). None of these apply here... the photos are clearly intended to depict the copyrighted material. - Reventtalk 10:00, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to understand licenses to add pictures to an article

Hello! I recently tried to add the ATLAS experiment's logo on the ATLAS experiment's wiki page. Here is the copyright information for the image I used: http://atlasexperiment.org/photos/copyright.html This link reads: "You are free to use ATLAS imagery, video and audio material for educational, scientific, or informational purposes, including photo collections, textbooks, public exhibits and Internet Web pages providing the copyright is shown as follows: ATLAS Experiment © 2016 CERN ATLAS images are under CERN copyright. If the ATLAS material is to be used for commercial purposes, it must not explicitly or implicitly convey CERN or ATLAS' endorsement."

Since a wikipedia article is educational purpose, and since I did add the "ATLAS Experiment © 2016 CERN" mention, I'm not sure what I did wrong. Could you point me in the right direction? It's strange not to have the experiment's logo on the page, when this logo clearly exists.

Thanks in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Felleg (talk • contribs)

According to the CERN license mentioned in your link above, "the image may not be sold, distributed or otherwise made available for use by third parties." That seems condrodicatry to being a commercial license. Also there i no mention anywhere that derivatives may be allowed, which is a must to be an allowable licnese on Commons. (tJosve05a (c) 01:59, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Felleg: The logo can probably be uploaded directly to the wikipedia where you wish to use it, under fair use. See, for example, en:Wikipedia:Logos. - Reventtalk 10:34, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's disgusting...

I talked to you on the discuss of this image and I waited a lot, but it looks like you don't want to answer. I know you have a life outside of Wikipedia, but this is not an excuse to don't say anything. Will you response someday? I know you're active on Commons! Do you think I didn't check your User contributions? This difference betrays your activity! You just like to tag pictures, but you hate to discuss and reach an agreement to keep an image with a modification. You're the worst administrator I ever saw in my life!--VictorPines (talk) 19:59, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

VictorPines then you've not seen very many administrators. This is a volunteer project, you don't get to demand people participate, we give our time freely but we're limited in what we can do. You should stop being so bloody ungrateful. Some people, honestly. Nick (talk) 22:19, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) @VictorPines: I'd like you to assume good faith, and stop using personal attacks towards editors a myself. The linked edit I did was part of my job as Josve05a (WMF), only loggd in with my volonteer account, since it wasn't direclty connected to what I'm hired for. I will respond within the 7-day frame of the discussion if I have anything to add, and if I deem it worth discussing. Harrassing me here won't make me more willing to communicate with you. File renaming by bot

Hej Jonatan. Can your bot do file renaming too? I'd like to rename a batch of files from Category:Thialf (ship, 1985). The original photographer at Flickr obviously got the name mixed up and we should change the affected file names from "File:Thailf ..." to "File:Thialf ..." De728631 (talk) 23:28, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@De728631: I do not have approval for my bot to rename files, but I can ue the batch rename tool with my normal account to do so, if you wish. (tJosve05a (c) 23:36, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replacement Maps

Hi Josve05a, I'm new to Wikimedia Commons and don't have much experience with its copyright and free use regulations, so even though I read the sections, there might still be some materials I missed. Since the previous maps used in this article were removed on copyright grounds, is it alright if I create substitutes using scribblemaps.com, which purports to a free map editing site? Would this be acceptable for upload on Wikimedia?

Thanks, The Pittsburgher (talk) 23:02, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@The Pittsburgher: Not if the map n question is copyrighted and not freely licensed (such as Google Maps) which from images I see on https://www.scribblemaps.com/ I believe they use. You can try maps from https://www.openstreetmap.org and use {{ODbL OpenStreetMap}} as a licnese. (tJosve05a (c) 23:06, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. So all I have to do is use that site and then attribute the image to them in the citation?
The Pittsburgher (talk) 23:16, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. You can even use {{OpenStreetMap}} to attribute everything at once, and just add your own description. (tJosve05a (c) 23:19, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of two files in Wikimedia

Hi Jonatan,

I realised that you marked as copyright violation two files I uploaded File:Logo de la Universidad de Málaga.png and File:Logo de la Universidad de Málaga (transparencia).png. The University of Málaga changed it seal, and I replaced it in the main article of the university (which had the older seal uploaded ), in fact there is another image of the seal uploaded in Wikimedia https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1b/Seal_University_of_M%C3%A1laga.png and is used in the english Wikipedia article. My question is: Why the other tow seals aren't violating copyright issues, and mine yes?

Regards, Alvaro95114. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alvaro95114 (talk • contribs) 13:31, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That file which you link to is uploaded locally to the English Wikipedia, and not to Wikimedia Commons. Some language versions of Wikipedia allow copyrighted files under the premise of fair use, something which the cross-wiki project Wikimedia Commons does not; see COM:Fair use. Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 15:15, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But, what about the other seal? (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logounimalaga.svg), the same university with the same copyright, and this was actually uploaded to Wikimedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alvaro95114 (talk • contribs) 15:43, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

----Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 01:09, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Stefano zanna86 Zanardi: if the logo is simple enough it can be uploaded to commons. See Commons:Threshold of originality. It would of course be ideal if the company released the logo under a free license though. Skottniss (talk) 10:33, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About OTRS permission

Hello, Joseve05a. Do OTRS volunteers accept that Gmail or Email can be used for handling relevant problems? -- Music Stanislaw (talk) 07:37, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Music Stanislaw, I do not exactly understand your question, but OTRS is an email system with "verified users" handling the email responses (ticket), and accept mails from any email provider and adress. If you need OTRS assistance, feel freee to use which ever email prvider you feel comfortable. If you are asking if OTRS accepts that anybody else contact someone wit an isssue and try to reolve it with their Gmail-adress, we have nothing against help between users. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 17:21, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata validation

Hello my friend,
I saw that you edited Category:Sciophilini (perfect edition, a pleasure to read ;-))
You perhaps discovered that now {{VN}} validates wikidata values.
I need your help:

  1. did you see the red error message (in Category:Sciophilini ;-)) ?
  2. did you understand the red error messages (I am not always sure of my english) ?
  3. should I provide help on how to solve the wikidata issue ?

Cheers 11:16, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Liné1, how are you?
I have noticed these messages, and I'm trying to fix some from the category when I have time. I was doing other stuff at the same time while editing that, so I didn't bother with Wikidata then, an thought I would get beck to it later. Thank you for helping develop thse templates etc.! --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 11:20, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It was not at all a reproach.
I just need someone review my work ;-)
Am I crazy, are my errors comprehensible, how vast is the universe. That kind of things.
Could you look at Category:Sciophilini and tell me if the messages are clear enough ?
Could you look at Category:Pages with biology property incorrect on Wikidata and tell me if my english is comprehensible ?
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 12:01, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I might only be able to get back to you when I am back home.) --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:26, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): I just wanted to know if the structured data project which is in the works for the future can handle all the different license templates for different aspects of the file. One license template fr the music (with an OTRS template), one template for the animation (with a licnese review template), and one template for the illustrations (with a licnese review template), andone joint template with a compatible license for all of them. Will the 'new' Wikdata-e system be able to "attribute properly" for all these aspects? --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 10:48, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How exactly it will be modeled will be up to the editors but I am confident it will be possible, yes. One way to do it is to have several statements about copyright and then use qualifiers to say what they apply to. Hope that helps. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 01:58, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ho Chi Minh City FC Logo

Hi. I uploaded this image as "fair use" described under https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Fair_use_images - I'm not sure what exactly I am supposed to do here. The image is clearly of fair use exception. Please advise. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by John arneVN (talk • contribs) 04:24, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello John arneVN. COM:Fair use images are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons (this website). useWikidata=

Hello my friend,
About using useWikidata=: please avoid it when you can.
In the present case, the missing information was in wikidata: here.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 20:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see My bad. Is there any way to program {{VN}} to give an error when both useWikidata= and a sitelink is 'active'? --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 20:40, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello my friend
Sadly useWikidata= can be used in some case (even with sitelink active).
See Category:Biology pages with wikidata item specified in VN
It is a nightmare.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 06:38, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In fact you are totally correct: I can add a check
When useWikidata= is used, the wikidata entry must have a non-empty wikicommons sitelink + a non-empty P373 (Commons category). But I cannot check thei value.
Thanks Liné1 (talk) 08:53, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just implemented 2 tests in your use case. Thanks a lot.

Gridcoin_logo.png deletion

Ok. this was my second time uploading the file, and i have no idea how to do it properly apparently.

it is an open source image that was created for an open source program, and the author has given explicit permissions for it to be used by anybody in the Gridcoin community.

everyone is reasonably upset that our image keeps getting deleted, and i don't want to risk my ability to be an editor, so can somebody actually guide me through how to upload an open source logo without a license, so that i can stop being threatened and stuff? :D

thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by O0rino0o (talk • contribs) 16:20, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PBS logos

Why were various flat PBS logos deleted? They have no reason other than the boilerplate message "Copyright violation; see Commons:Licensing: Non-free logo". I believe that the original PBS logo is pre-1978; the modern PBS logo is just the first initial with a simple repeated edge. I'd like them to be undeleted and discussed. The ones I saw on my watchlist are File:WIPB-color-pbs.jpg and File:PBS Logo.png but there are probably others. --Closeapple (talk) 14:13, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh: Looks like Commons:Deletion requests/File:PBS Logo.svg may have caused this. Do you still want to undelete these, or should I ask -Natuur12 since he closed the deletion discussion? (Apparently nobody noticed that most of the logo is pre-1978.) --Closeapple (talk) 14:17, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted these, since the logo on enwp is under fair use, and I believed it was above TOO, and I have no idea when it was created, or whether or not it had copyright notice back then. Feel free to go to COM:UNDEL and request undeletion from an uninvolved admin for the best course of action. :) --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 14:24, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Inquiry on Copyright Status

Dear Josve05a, I have 2 images scanned from an 1899 Russian magazine (dated to Russian Empire) and I have intention to upload it into Wikimedia. However I am not sure on the copyright status of the images, and thus I haven't uploaded it. The original photographer of the images is unknown, but the magazine article is authored by A. Kunakhovich (which its date of death is also unknown). The image would be useful in the Wikipedia article "Vyatka Horse" and has a Wikimedia category dedicated to this entry (but my images are different from those already uploaded). The images are published in the magazine "Veterinarnyy Feldsher" (Volume 3, No. 12, 25 December 1899). My instinct tell me these images should be in public domain, but I am a newbie and I still need more guidance on determining the copyright status. Please help. Thanks. --Nick lzk1231 (talk) 12:10, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
