Hi! Can you weigh in here with your opinion? Template_talk:By_country_category Ingolfson (talk) 09:20, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

I can't tell what you want my opinion on, there are several questions there, and quite a bit of discussion. Feel free to ask me something in particular, but in this case I don't see where to start. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
It's alright - sorry about bothering you if it's not something you feel you want to weigh in on. I just placed the request on a couple of people's pages who recently discussed category matters with me. Cheers Ingolfson (talk) 21:27, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Photographs of identifiable people again

I have made some changes to Commons:Photographs of identifiable people/Proposal in response to a variety of helpful suggestions that users have made on the talk page. You have already commented there; could I ask you to have a look again, and to consider whether you would like to express an opinion in the Poll towards the bottom of the page? Many thanks. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 18:34, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Looks better. I made one copyedit. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Alfonso Reyes Statue

Thanks for the advice. The statue is placed in a public park in Monterrey. I do not know how or where to specify this kind of things. I appreciate if you guide me in this. Thanks again--eliasjorge4 (talk) 18:32, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks again. I think it is ok to copy by photography a statue in a public place in most of countries. Anyhow Wikipedia is full of pictures of Mexican statues like this and even of sculptures from fountains and public parks. I will try to inform myself better about this matter. Thanks for your concern and have a good weekend.--eliasjorge4 (talk) 00:17, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Actually, not "most". It's about 50-50. And apparently the FOP template (which I've now added to the page in question) should be used when doing this. - Jmabel ! talk 04:58, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
You have the reason, it is 50-50 in this matter. I did not know that so many countries have that law. I am now so confuse if I could or not to up load this files. I have not intention in brake anybody´s laws. If you think these files have to be deleted, so delete them. Thanks and good luck!--eliasjorge4 (talk) 18:46, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
No problem, this is entirely OK in Mexico, just remember to add FOP in the licensing section (as well as the license for your picture) if the statue is recent enough that copyright could imaginably be an issue. - Jmabel ! talk 19:10, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Re:Comarcas

Hola Jmabel, posiblemente no sea buena idea, pero entonces tampoco lo es Flags of regions of Belgium, Flags of regions of Slovakia, ni Flags of regions of the Czech Republic o quizás Flags of regions of Italy.

Anna (talk) 20:05, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Belvaros beggar

I added this category but it was only the optic impression who led me to believe that the person is of Rom ethnicity and not of Hungarian. However, I reverted my edit, leaving you the decision whether it is true or not. If my edit embarrassed you - I apologize. Regards!--Olahus (talk) 12:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I've certainly spent enough time in Central Europe to agree that it's likely he's Roma, and I agree that he looks it, but he could have been reduced to begging even if he was from a background where that is less culturally acceptable. I don't think it's appropriate to jump to a conclusion about ethnicity here. We have him in Category:Beggars, because we know that much. - Jmabel ! talk 18:01, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Quota

It's a term I haven't found a suitable translation in English for. It's the number of the archive the document belongs to. --Alex:D (talk) 14:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

"Entry"? "Entry number"? Dahn (talk) 17:28, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Something like that. I remember I've asked 2 people and searched trough 4-5 dictionaries in order to translate it. --Alex:D (talk) 19:38, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I see, so this is like the Spanish "cuota", which can mean a portion of something. No, "quota" in English can't have that meaning. Maybe "archive portion"? or just "part"? - Jmabel ! talk 22:21, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
It's like an "order number". E.g. 8/1966. --Alex:D (talk) 00:00, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
What exactly does it identify? My understanding is that it identifies an arbitrary portion of the collection larger than a single item, but doesn't guarantee any particular coherence of that portion of the collection. Right? - Jmabel ! talk 05:30, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Something like that. It might point to a set of photos etc. --Alex:D (talk) 11:18, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Probably "part", "section", or "archive section" then. But if you come up with a different suggestion, feel free to run it by me for native-speaker opinion. Has anyone asked Biruitorul? He's probably the most truly dual native English-Romanian speaker we've got. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
He was the first one I've asked. --Alex:D (talk) 11:32, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Removal of techno music category from Dance music category

Hi there. Regarding your message on my talk page: I honestly don't remember why I did that; since I can't think of a reason, it was most likely a mistake. Re:File:Bucuresti-vechi (nord-est).JPG

I don't know exactly, but I suppose the twenties. I uploaded the map for an article in the Romanian Wikipedia because it is the only map I ever found that represents the Pipera airport, a former airport that existed in Bucharest during the interwar period. Best regards! --Olahus (talk) 14:30, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

The year is not mentioned in the map collection. 2008 is the year when I scanned the map. I had to fill the field "Date" when I uploaded the file, but the only date I know is the one when I scanned the image. Concerning the location of the museum, I read here that it is placed on "Soseaua Fabrica de Glucoza" - the former Pipera airport was placed along this street (on the other side of the street there is only a park, few houses and some office building). However, on the place of the airstrip (around 100,000m²) there is an industrial platform biult during the Ceausescu-era. --Olahus (talk) 18:03, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
It's fine, thank you! --Olahus (talk) 19:51, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Bonbonerie of ...

Bonbonerie of Carol I

Hi Joe, do you know who the artist of this bonbonerie was? Unfortunatle the resolution of this image is too low to read the description. Do you possibly have a higher resultion version? And I am also curious when this bonbonerie was made. Do you know this? --Ephraim33 (talk) 19:30, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Nope, sorry, I don't know any more than what I wrote, and this was the resolution at which it was shot. This was right at the start of when I was doing photos for Commons, and I wasn't taking the kind of notes I now take (nor was I shooting at as high a resolution & quality). Probably the only hope would be to contact the National Museum of Romanian History. - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi again. After a long fight with google I was able to find this Bonbonerie on the page of the exhibition Romania in the time of Carol I of the National Museum of Romanian History. On this page "Paul Telge, Berlin" is named as the artist. I added this piece of information at the description page of your photo, and prepare an article Paul Telge for the German wikipedia. --Ephraim33 (talk) 18:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Tracy House

Are you sure your "Normandy Park, WA - Tracy House" photos are of the Tracy House? Please see Photos of the Tracy house on Arcaid or Tracy house on waymarking.com. The Waymarking site has the GPS coordinates as well. --Waltloc (talk) 12:54, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Damn good question. The address is the one given at en:National Register of Historic Places listings in King County, Washington, which I think is correct for the Tracy House. The exterior shots on Arcaid look like they might be the rear (toward the water). I actually spoke to the current owner of the house I photographed, a contractor, who said it had been abandoned for a couple of years when he bought it, that it was a bit of a wreck, and that the slate façade facing the street was his own recent work, replacing a mess.
But that's really all I know. And I agree that it looks like a different house from the photos. I'd be glad to be of any help I can be in sorting this out. - Jmabel ! talk 16:35, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
The Tracy House is a en:Usonian "automatic" house, which means it was built from precast concrete block. Even if it were covered up with slate, I don't think it would look like the house you photographed. Here are some good shots of the street-facing facade and the carport - photos of the Tracy House on Flickr --Waltloc (talk) 19:59, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
I have to say, it looks like you are right. We should probably kill the pictures I got, since the house I shout isn't really of much interest if it isn't the relevant house, however altered. But I wonder what's going on, because I'm almost certain I had the address right. (I should note, though, it's a confusing neighborhood, so I'm less certain than I normally would be.) - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

German colonial empire

joe, you worked up a redo of an old file for me, removing the German "colony" in Venezuela. the file you made is correct, and it should replace MOST of the otehr uses of the old version. But now the file is up for deletion, because someone is claiming that it is incorrect. I need some help here. --Auntieruth55 (talk) 15:31, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

You'll have to be more specific, and aim me at where the discussion is taking place. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry. German Unification was the article we worked on. The file in question was a png file that had colonies all over the world, and over 4 centuries and was very confusing. There was a colony in Venezuela called Little Venice, which you removed. Someone else has problems with the borders in Germany itself, but since the map is supposed to show colonies, not Germany, I hadn't paid attention to that. I've replaced it now with another file. I'm not sure how many other articles are using the file. I guess I panicked. ;) T --Auntieruth55 (talk) 19:02, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

your gull pictures

Hi Jmabel, I think your [photos http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Larus_canus&diff=24871765&oldid=19189255] don't show Larus canus, but rather a young "bigger gull". Hi. Thank You for uploading files about municipalities in Italy. We are making a big work to collect all the comuni and the frazioni of Italy, and we put them in the correct categories. Half of Italy is now ok. It is important, when you create a new category of a municipality of Italy, that you categorise it correctly, like it is written on the top of the main categories. With other words: a municipality have to be categorised in Category:Cities in Italy (list of all municipalities in Italy); Category:Cities in NameOfTheRegion (list of all the municipalities in that Region); and last in Category:Municipalities in province of NameOfTheProvince (list of all the municipalities in the same Province). If you don't know which is the Region and the Province of a Municipality, you will have very quikly this informations if you ask it:Wikipedia. Thank You very much for your correctly categorisations. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 21:21, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Please feel free to add this information to the category. I have no idea what would be the accurate information for this comuno. Greek Revival categorization

I was just following what the NPS says for both of them (and, BTW, "Greek Revival" has more to do with the floor plan and overall form of the house ... many houses that followed that style didn't have columns or any sort of decoration out front). Daniel Case (talk) 06:05, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

I do digress from their classifications when I have the chance to read the actual application and see what the nominator actually said. Or when I can see that the building more plainly illustrates a subtype of style. Yes, the rear of the T-C building is added on; that's true of a lot of NRHP listings. But as for illustrating that style, again it's really about the proportions and the forms (When I got my article about the Peter Dubois House on the enwiki MP as a DYK, someone complained on the talk page that it's one of the most conservative GR houses ever, and seems more Federal to him. He was sort of right ... the application talks a lot about it being the last major Hudson Valley GR estate house, and since DuBois sort of knew he was the last of the early landowner class in the valley he probably preferred the style to be as little developed as possible in his house (oh, and the third story there is a 20th-century addition). Daniel Case (talk) 06:21, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that addition was put on after the house was purchased by a nearby sanitarium, so it could house more patients (and that, and not the "last GR HV house" thing was what got on the Main Page for the article. Daniel Case (talk) 06:25, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Jmabel!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

"I notice that you placed several images, including File:7(jair).jpg, in Category:Performance Memoirs. I have no idea why. Performance Memoirs is a group of three women in Seattle, which should be more or less apparent from its supercategories; these images seem quite unrelated. Since they have almost no description, I don't really know what about them might have made you place them there, but I think they should be removed from that category, and unless you give me a good reason to the contrary, I will do so. (If you want to write back, use my user talk page.) - Jmabel ! talk 07:03, 24 September 2009 (UTC)"

Reason: I think that Recital of poetry + installation = performance. But,it's my opinion and I am not against these remotions.Paulo Cesar-1 (talk)

It equals performance, but "Performance Memoirs" is the name of a group, not a generic category. I'll remove these. - Jmabel ! talk 06:46, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

If you created this project page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Please see my comments there, which I made some time ago. This was intended as a speedy delete of Category:Anglican churches by country, which is not being used. - Jmabel ! talk 21:32, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Gold's Gym

This building is a health club, not a gymnasium, so I put it in a more proper category. As of now there is not a good category for buildings that are fitness or health clubs. I made the decision by looking at categories on Wikipedia. Xnatedawgx (talk) 00:11, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Context: this was about File:Palacio de convenciones zac.jpg. I was about to put the following response on the user's talk page, but that was just now blanked, replaced with "Usario retirado". I'm leaving my response her for reference. - Jmabel ! talk 03:57, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 03:57, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks!

I just wanted to thank you for straightening out the categories for the images I transferred. Next time I'll be more alert for the difference between a National Historic Landmark and the National Register of Historic Places. Shinerunner (talk) 09:48, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

I marked up the identifiable building as you requested. Too low resolution to identify the rest, but I'm afraid moist winter air would wash out the detail at this distance anyway. Distances in this shot are from 2 to 20 kilometers. NVO (talk) 10:56, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

The image is licenced New Zealand licence CC-BY-SA 3.0 at NZ Electronic Text Centre, licence CC-BY-SA, images from book Vikings of the Sunrise by Te Rangi Hiroa (Sir Peter Buck), Victoria University of Wellington, Library catalogue, NZ. I've read all the copyright notes and thought these licensed images are okay to upload in commons. I've just started uploading historical images for Samoa wiki project. Am I wrong? I might have ticked the wrong box when uploading - but would appreciate your feedback on legality. Thank you.Teinesavaii (talk) 03:52, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the advice! Really appreciate it as I'm so scared of getting the legal thing all wrong. I'll go and edit the photo pages and follow your suggestions. Teinesavaii (talk) 04:11, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Citlalli

I'm contacting you because you are a French-speaking admin & obviously currently active. Could I ask you to take a look at the contributions of User:Citlalli? There seem to me to be only two possibililites. Either (1) this person is a professional-quality artist and photographer, uploading small copies of his or her own work and releasing them (which would be great) or (2) this person is uploading a lot of copyvios. If it is the former, then probably we should strongly suggest that he or she create a user page and/or drop a note to OTRS. Anyway, I figured it would be best that he or she be approached by a French-speaking admin, rather than by me. - Jmabel ! talk 19:07, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I will take a look at his contributions ;). Cheers--Bapti 13:07, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Re :the basis on which these images are in the public domain? Unless you are Nicanor G. Tsiongson, what is the basis of your right to release them?

This section header is a quote from my question to Janeil - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Dear Jmabel,

You would be the first to comment ever about my one and only contribution to wikipedia. The Manila Metropolitan Theatre is the best example of Art-Deco in the Philippines. I used to work for our government's cultural agency and I found scattered copies of the 1978 reopening of the theatre. Since 1996, it's main area has been derelict and have been falling in neglect. It's a beautiful building and no much effort is going to its rehabilitation.

Information for it is scarce. It's like scanning a newspaper clipping and citing its author. I believe this is what I have done with this 1978 souvenir booklet in spreading awareness about the history of the Metropolitan Theatre for architectural conservationists. Conservation of our cultural heritage is still in its infancy here in the Philippines. I have not profited from releasing the scanned pages. It was also a Philippine funded publication for its reopening. I'm actually extending this publication over to cyberspace. I'm contributing for the betterment of our country's cultural heritage of a 1935 building done by one of the very first architects of my country.

It's a magnificent marker of architecture in our country that is truly alive and very Filipino in motifs in its moldings, statues, paintings and overall form. Wouldn't you think it's worth sharing its history with everyone else since it's even regarded as even the best example of Art-Deco style in the entire Asian region?

Janeil

Agreed that it is commendable to get these online and that it is certainly fair use (at least under U.S. law, I know nothing about Philippine law in this respect). The problem is that the Commons doesn't allow images that are merely "fair use", not "free". So while I believe (for example) there would be no problem at all posting this material on Flickr, the Commons rules say we need clean rights.
I don't necessarily like this limitation, but it is the rule of the site. I'm guessing that the pages were originally work for hire, paid for by the theater, so they probably could release rights. Is there any way to get their explicit permission, through the OTRS process? - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Categorization of California architecture

If you will have time, you may be interested to categorize other photos of historical buildings in Bay Area. See Category:Streets in Los Gatos, California, Category:Streets in Santa Clara, California, Category:Streets in Alameda, California, Category:Burlingame, California, Category:San Mateo, California, Category:Saratoga, California. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:31, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really doing this very systematically. I occasionally pick a category to clean up (often one that really should have only categories, so I know that all the images are miscategorized), and do my best to do what I can on the pictures that happen to be in that category. - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Marmatia

Sure !

Answer: File:Marmatia.jpg is a scan from the Stieler's Hand-Atlas, map n° 18 (Austro-Hungary sheet 2), Ed.: Justus Perthes, Gotha, Germany, 1905

Thank you for your wiseness: you don't delete the file without discussion.

Urbansuperstar

I think user Urbansuperstar's native language is Swedish. He used "Principe" and "Principesa" because both royals are part oh the Romanian royal family originally, however the descriptions are written in Swedish and English. Greetings, Dantadd 00:09, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
