Last warning

I have made several useful contributions. Was not familiar with a very particular copyright issue and uploaded a photo of posters I had taken. Why are you giving me the last warning? Is this how you make a positive impact? --Eh kia (talk) 23:53, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Hossein Amanat - Azadi Square - Azadi (Shahyad) Tower - Tehran - Earlier 1970s

Hi

I provided the necessary information for the photo.

Please let me know if there are other information required.

ThanksShkuru Afshar (talk) 10:01, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

@Shkuru Afshar: Exactly where did you get this photo? Who took it and when? Who scanned it 11:05, 3 October 2007? Who photoshopped it 04:18, 15 October 2010?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:04, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Original photo was printed in 1970s and located in Historical Museum of Azadi Tower Tehran. He took this picture from himself after September 1971 opening ceremony of the tower and scanned it in 2007 and sent it to BBCPersian for an article about him published in 2007.

RegardsShkuru Afshar (talk) 14:23, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

@Shkuru Afshar: Given that information, why did you decide that it was a good idea to post "{{Information |description={{fa|1=حسین امانت، معمار برج آزادی (شهیاد) تهران در دهه 1350 خورشیدی}} |date=2007-10-03 11:05:16 |source=Unknown |author={{unknown|author}}" in this edit?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:36, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

I wasn't sure if source should be himself or Historical Museum of Azadi Tower Tehran. And the date should be scanned date or the date that it was taken. In Iran, date of taking photo is considered as the Date which I always provided provide it in filenames, based on Gregorian calendar. On the other hand, if you copy my Persian description in Google translate, you will notice that I have provided information about its origin, in Persian language.

ReagrdsShkuru Afshar (talk) 15:06, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

@Shkuru Afshar: Google Translate somehow got "1950s Solar" from what you wrote, a couple of decades off.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:11, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

This is because Iranians know the story and Solar is a wrong translation. خورشیدی means Solar Hijri calendar. I suppose provided information are enough.

RegardsShkuru Afshar (talk) 15:27, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

@Shkuru Afshar: That makes little sense to me, Google Translate should convert to Gregorian dates when converting to English language. Wikimedia Commons is not just for Iranians, but for humanity everywhere, as assisted by machines. @Magog the Ogre: What do you think?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:32, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

You are right. Wikimedia Commons is for anybody. This is why I always provide filenames with Gregorian calendar date because Google translate can't convert it. Use a professional date converter website. For example Between April to December of 1971 in Gregorian will be converted to 2nd to 9th of 1350 in Hijri. Following to that, 1970s will be equal to 1350s.

RegardsShkuru Afshar (talk) 15:49, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

It's actually a decent idea. I think you mean it should convert to Gregorian dates into Persian dates, right? The date field indeed properly internationalizes for various languages. A few considerations:

Racism, traffic problems

Racism is a form of discrimination based on racial theories and Category:Discrimination is already included in the Category:Social problems. The reduction of social interaction caused by traffic problems can be a temporary problem or can result in "chronic" social isolation, which is a separate social problem. I wonder where I am going wrong.--Cats' photos (talk) 12:01, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

@Cats' photos: For one thing, you are not explaining your edits in your edit summaries. If you remove a cat (category, not feline) because it is a subcat of an existing cat, we have a one-word explanation, "overcategorization", or "overcat" for short. Is that what you have been doing?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:12, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
I promise you that I will follow your advice and I will explain my edits until now, but you should answer to my arguments.--Cats' photos (talk) 20:11, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Code issues in User:Jeff G./common.js

Hi Jeff G., I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Jeff G./common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 5 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Geocoding

@Jeff G.: Through Wikipedia's media deletion process, I would like to remove the photos that I uploaded containing geo-coded information on the condition that I will upload the same two photographs again but without geo-code data. Is that valid grounds for image deletion? If needed, I can upload the same two photos again before the existing duplicates are removed. Could I try this? CartleR255 (talk) 17:22, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

@CartleR255: You can just overwrite them, and remove my additional text and templates, but why would you want to?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:18, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The geocode data on the photographs is incorrect. In one case, it is a close approximation of the actual photograph location; but in the other case, it is grossly inaccurate -- an error in the neighborhood of 20 miles. This erroneous geodata is due to the use of a third-party application in tandem with the device's camera when shooting the subject. The application failed to accurately identify and report the location of the photographs. Thus, it is for this reason that I wish to have the geocode data removed, for the sake of accuracy and correctness. Belatedly, I realized I should not have uploaded the photographs for educational use because the accompanying metadata is not entirely accurate. Since discovering this problem, I have discontinued use of the application. Additionally, I was asking about uploading the same file without geodata into Commons such that the existing copy can be speedily deleted as a duplicate. I may try this solution as there is no valid objection against it and it is for a reasonable and beneficial purpose. Any other suggestions? -- CartleR255 (talk) 20:06, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I am going to overwrite the files. Subsequently, which template do I use to remove the old versions? CartleR255 (talk) 20:30, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
@CartleR255: Good. For each file, I would put {{Edit request}} in a new section on the file's talk page, and below it ask for the original version to be hidden or deleted using the reason above. We don't have a file description page template that does this job yet, the closest is the (inappropriate in this case) {{Unfree frame}}.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 21:19, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Hello I'm here to handle this request. But there are some issues. @CartleR255: 1. The JPG got recompressed, please use an EXIF tool!? 2. The Geocode data seems correct. -- User: Perhelion 08:00, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
@Perhelion: 1. I will reedit using an EXIF tool with the original copy of each image and I will use EXIF in the future. Do you need me to re-upload? 2. The geocode data is off by 20 miles for two images and only off by a few meters for the other image. I would consider that erroneous. -- CartleR255 (talk) 14:10, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Hey Jeff, I've seen you all over the place and decided to reach out to you directly in order to get something fixed. Jeff, don't put impersonal templates on my talk page with no explanation: [2]. We've interacted a few times and I think helped each other, so plonking a robotic template instead of actually typing a message is, in my opinion, lazy and quite rude. I don't think I'm the first person to complain about you communicating via template instead of like a human being. It's disappointing from a long-term colleague.
As an additional note, I think you should have left the copyvio tag for an admin to assess. The image is clearly not "own work", and I've spent a lot of time trying to get this user to edit properly, here and at en.wiki, which this somewhat undermines. In all, you've disappointed me here today, and condescending, faux officious little notes like this [3] don't help much either. -- Begoon 11:15, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

@Begoon: I'm sorry. I was put off by your tone in your summary of this edit. Template:Delete specifies exactly how to neutrally notify people that would be interested in a DR, without a hint of canvassing. Also, you should know better than to write on a file's talk page when the file is at an active DR. I created the DR because the uploader was objecting to speedy deletion. I invited you to comment there because you hadn't yet done so, and I didn't want to call you out for writing on the file's talk page.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:56, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
"Also, you should know better than to write on a file's talk page when the file is at an active DR."...what? I'm not aware of any such thing. Regardless of that I had several tabs open and that message was posted in response to the uploader before I was even aware that you had removed the speedy tag. (notice that I only saw and removed your template 2 minutes later...) Anyway, you might enjoy pointless wikilawyering about this kind of thing - I don't. As to the "tone" of my edit summary, yes it was strong, but if you had spent as much time as I have trying to help this particular user, here and at en.wiki, I'd permit you a little exasperation in the circumstances... -- Begoon 15:34, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Some texts on file talk pages have been missed by DR closing Admins, and they disappear on delete closes, so I learned long ago not to bother to write there anything I want considered at DR or kept on the record of the DR after closure.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:41, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Pinging @Begoon: sorry.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:43, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Ah, so a practical thing, not a policy thing - I don't really disagree with the logic, but since I didn't "write there anything I want considered at DR or kept on the record of the DR after closure.", but rather just an ephemeral, of the moment, reply to the uploader, all seems well. -- Begoon 15:53, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
