If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Milnebourg Train Picture[edit]

Hello, I see that the image Milneburg Train is public domain from your entry and from the LSU library display page. I just want to confirm that it is OK for me to download and use your scan of this image from your Wikipedia page on the Pontchartrain R.R. thanks, Scott Ellis, author of "Madame Vieux Carre, the French Quarter in the Twentieth Century — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.63.60.143 (talk) 18:50, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure which picture you're referring to, but if it is marked as public domain on the image page, it's fine to reuse as you wish. Check the file page for individual pictures, the license (copyright status) will be listed. Many images are licensed requiring specific attribution to the photographer/author, but may be reused for free as long as the attribution/license terms are credited. Hello Infrogmation,

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Cheers,

Don Murray (clarinetist) page[edit]

You appear to have originally created the Don Murray page in 2003. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Murray_(clarinetist) Where did you get the info that Ted Lewis said Murray was the greatest clarinetist ever to be in Lewis's band? I am writing about Don Murray now for publication and have read every available source I'm aware of. Nowhere have I found that Ted Lewis statement - except here. Can you please provide the source? Many thanks for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Completewarrior (talk • contribs) 07:52, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall off hand, but it may well be from a taped interview with Ted Lewis, IIRC by Richard B. Allen, at the Hogan Jazz Archive, Tulane University, since I've done lots of research at the Tulane Jazz Archive. I believe many of those archival interviews have been put online in recent years, so you may find it in a search of the Tulane U website. Hi Infrogmation, while researching the provenance of some other images, I happen to notice File:GT BBall Swarm.jpg, which is from [1] and has an apparently valid CC-BY-2.0 license. You deleted it in 2009 saying "Copyright violation: Creative Commons attribution license; photographer not credited". (I'm not sure why you didn't just fix the problem with the image rather than deleting it?) But could you please restore the image? Thanks, --B (talk) 18:02, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall the details. Looking I see it was 9 years ago, and the image had false information about both license and author, which certainly qualifies for speedy deletion. If the actual source photo is free licensed and you think it of in scope usefulness, it may be uploaded with proper source, attribution, and license. (Looks at history...) Hm, it looks like the Flickr upload bot somehow put the 2.0 license on when uploading? I don't know why unless there was a change of license on Flickr, and that was what it was at the time of upload? No idea. The first edit in the file history shows flickrreview saying "Public Domain Mark" AND a {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}} - maybe a bug in the "Flickr upload bot" at the time? I suspect it's always been a PDM. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:21, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have to apologise, I have made a mistake, I intended to add the pictures to the category 1950 Willys automobiles. 1950 because production ended in 1950. I see no reason why the vehicle might not have been sold new in 1951 but it looks wrong to have 1951 models of a car that was not made near that year.

In my enthusiasm I cannot have been watching what I was doing. I will go back and check my other edits around that time but not for an hour or two. Thanks for picking up my mistake. Eddaido (talk) 20:44, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I believe I labeled it "1951" because that is what the person who was driving it told me. If that was a mistake, I have no objection changing to the correct year. However you added it to a category which is specifically for "Automobiles_in_the_Automobile_Driving_Museum", and since this car is not in that museum, it does not belong in that category. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:55, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I do not understand how the museum category was picked from the drop down cat-a-lot menu. As I say above my attention must have been distracted. I am sure we are both of one mind but it certainly did not look like it. Eddaido (talk) 22:44, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Two observations: 1)I didn't see a separate categories for Willys_Jeepsters by year, perhaps they should be created if you feel a need. There are categories for "Willys_automobiles_by_model_year". 2)"Model year" may be relevant. US automakers often introduce new models before the end of the calendar year, so possibly "1951 model" Jeepsters were produced in calendar year 1950? Just wondering. Thanks for your work. Thanks for uploading File:Xela Parque Central 2015 AzurdiaFoto 05.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

heads up[edit]

File:RN Image1.jpg was uploaded by User:Nolimetangere777 (It's a copyright violation, being a screenshot from here). That brand new file was then added to en:Rubin Naiman a few hours later by User:Ross kramerov. User:N4izL3etsP44k also seems to be involved. If I wasn't assuming good faith, I would figure that Ross kramerov is an obvious paid editor and the others are his socks. And everything uploaded here by any of them is suspect. (File:Chelsea Bunn.jpg for example, comes from here.) World's Lamest Critic (talk) 03:47, 11 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Infrogmation: Hello? World's Lamest Critic (talk) 22:03, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't nominate them for deletion for the same reason that I didn't link the usernames. I approached you because you are an admin both here and on Wikipedia (and you had contact with Nolimetangere). I thought you might want to look into it over there, maybe even ask a checkuser to look into it, and I didn't want to alert the users in question. If you don't have time to follow up or think it is not worth looking into, that's fine. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 03:26, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Missed[edit]

Hi Infrogmation, I guess you missed this out but you closed the DR. (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 06:35, 20 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn’t realize I put "own work". I got the pic from a book called "An Introduction to Nature", which has a ton of beautiful illustrations throughout. The problem is that the first page of the book says "Illustrated by Don Eckelberry, Tabea Hofmann, and Michael H Bevans"; nowhere else does it say specifically who made what, but I was just about to change the description to say that it could be any one of those three people—but that I did believe Don E. was most likely, due to him showing up as a well-known professional illustrator of birds of all sorts when you look him up on Google. I guess they apparently didn’t care that much about them getting credit for their specific artworks. I could not find a copyright license, as it was not mentioned anywhere within the book. Sorry, I’m kind of new to this whole "uploading copyrighted material" thing, but I can assure you that I published this with the only intention of more people seeing the artist's amazing work.

If it did turn out to certainly be the work of Don E., and I had specified who the creator of the work was but still without providing a license, would it somehow be okay because he never ever anywhere specified a license in any of his works, and because I don’t believe I can ask him about it since he’s dead now (but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind)? If he were still alive, I believe he’d be around 97 years old. SaltySemanticSchmuck (talk) 22:10, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. Note that Wikimedia Commons is for only free licensed media - mostly either copyright expired or the author authorizes reuse under a free license; see Commons:Licensing for details. Don't claim someone else's work as your own. Unless the artist/author (or if they are dead, the heirs to the artist/author's work) has specifically authorized a free license (see Commons:OTRS for details if they do), there's no reason to assume it's free licensed, sorry. If you have more questions about using Commons you can't find an answer to, ask. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:18, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Infrogmation[edit]

I see you are a Commons admin and I am wandering if you can help me or at least point me in the right direction. I am mostly involved with English WP so don't know my way around Commons too well other than to upload images. It turns out that I just uploaded 2 files (File:Periódico El Eco del Comercio (Ponce, Puerto Rico - 5 de Julio de 1852) (DP29).jpg and File:Periódico El Ponceño (Ponce, Puerto Rico - 25 de Marzo de 1854) (DP30).jpg) and overlooked removing my personal information from the files before the upload, thus disclosing my real name in the files' metadata. Of course the reason I use "Mercy11" is because I want to keep my real name confidential, which my desire to contribute those 2 files has now put in jeopardy. Can you delete those two files so that my PII isn't public? I can then re-upload them again without that PII information included. I prefer to keep this matter confidential and so don't want to post in a public forum for all admins to see. Much thanks in advance, Mercy11 (talk) 01:36, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Mercy11: . I'm not aware of a way to edit the metadata while they're on Commons. Practice on Commons is to usually grant deletion of files if the uploader asks promptly, especially if they say there was some mistake in the upload. As there's currently something of a backlog in deletion, I volunteer to delete the files directly myself if you request. Could you then edit the metadata on your end then re-upload with your preferred metadata? Would this be a good way to resolve this for you? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:45, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I meant. I made a mistake. I already have the 2 files ready for re-uploading, that is, with the correct metadata already edited. If you can purge/delete those 2 files I would much appreciate it. Thanks, Mercy11 (talk) 02:01, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll delete your two most recent uploads. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:03, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hum...I thought I had removed it on the 3rd upload...but better 4 eyes than 2, and better safe than sorry!! Once again, thanks a million. I was so stressed out from my error, I got a headache. I'm going to bed now and will continue the uploads tomorrow. Have a great, great day! Mercy11 (talk) 02:12, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

Hi Infrogmation, could you check if File:Jahrbuch 19-20 Einband.jpg is similar to file:JbBGG 2007-2008.jpg? If yes, should I create a new DR or it can be deleted and linked to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jahrbuch 19-20 Einband.jpg? (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 14:22, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I don't express myself well. Of course I designed the image that I claim as creator, also I show in the image that it is not a copy of the Air Force web versions. I meant that I do not consider myself the author of one of the images used on the website of Air Force of Spain. I did not understand the meaning of this phrase well:

Also, how is the uploader claiming to have the right to license the emblem of the Air Force of Spain?

. I have also sent this message at the nomination page. Regret the misunderstandings --Heralder (talk) 15:41, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Maybe instead of closing a validate deletion request, you could help with errors and corrected them when you first commented. KKKNL1488 (talk) 01:40, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I posted that the deletion request was invalid as soon as a I noticed that the images had never been tagged. I didn't close the listing until more than a week later. There was no comment nor other action in the interim. If you have questions you can't find answers to or want help, ask. Names of historical figures[edit]

I would advise not putting the names of historical figures in scare quotes in this manner: [2]. It's like writing " Chinggis Khaan (name often redered as "Genghis Khan" in the West) ". --Geographyinitiative (talk) 12:28, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK. No scare was intended in the quotation marks. Do you have suggestions for best way to note outdated spellings in historic media, or when there are two names that refer to the same person, when it might not be obvious to users who are young or less familiar with the topic? Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 13:15, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • Here is my opinion. The wording implies that this form ('Chou En-lai') ought to be thought of as an outdated ('at the time') or illegitimate (quotation marks around the name) form vis-a-vis the other form ('Zhou Enlai'). In fact, they are just alternate forms one of the other. Zhou Enlai is one spelling for his name. Chou En-lai is another spelling for his name. Clarification of the use of these two spellings is not really needed on this photograph- that can be done on Wikipedia. That's my opinion, thanks for your time. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 22:29, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
