Category discussion warning

Irish Americans has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

"Election flyers in the United States"[edit]

I know this is an old edit, but were you planning to create a category or did you mean to type something else? - Jmabel ! talk 18:43, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall off hand what my thoughts or plans were at the time. Possibly it might be a useful category, but I'd have to hunt around to see. Feel free to remove the no-existent cat. -- Infrogmation (talk) 01:04, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Music of 1905[edit]

I'm not about to close it — for the simple reason that I don't know how properly to do it, and I'm afraid I'd make a mess of the page (and perhaps the monthly log) if I tried. Would you mind closing it yourself? I have no objection to seeing it closed as "Uti possidetis", i.e. we're happy with the changes that happened during the DR, and we're not going to make any further changes without having another discussion. I'll happily file a bot request to untag all of the other pages, if you'd like. Nyttend (talk) 00:15, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to use an image that you uploaded[edit]

Hello there, I would like to use an image that you uploaded to this site - it is this one in particular 'AfricanSlavesTransport.jpg' - and I just wanted to be sure that I have your permission to use it. It looks as though it is in the public domain but I just wanted to check with you for formalities and because I don't want to get into trouble if I do use it and have not got your permission first! Thank you 109.231.202.226 16:32, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:AfricanSlavesTransport.jpg is public domain. I hold no rights to it; I merely scanned and uploaded a copy here. It can be freely reused without restriction. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:36, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Can you confirm for me that you made the scan and what the source of the scan was - the original book for example or did you get the page with this illustration from somewhere else? Thanks once again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.231.202.226 (talk • contribs)

Yes, I scanned it from a 19th century book I had in my own collection before Katrina. -- Infrogmation (talk) 20:40, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I see that the image Milneburg Train is public domain from your entry and from the LSU library display page. I just want to confirm that it is OK for me to download and use your scan of this image from your Wikipedia page on the Pontchartrain R.R. thanks, Scott Ellis, author of "Madame Vieux Carre, the French Quarter in the Twentieth Century" {{unsignedIP2|13:55, 26 December 2016|68.63.60.143} — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.63.60.143 (talk) 13:58, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion question[edit]

I found reference to File:Miller cir.png in en:User:Spinningspark/Why I don't upload to Commons. You deleted it as a copyvio; Spinningspark is objecting that it can't possibly be a copyvio, since it was the same as the clearly free en:File:Miller cir.png. As far as you can tell from a five-years-old action, what happened? Perhaps it was different image with the same name? I'm just trying to understand, since I don't have ViewDeleted on this wiki. Nyttend (talk) 13:34, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't recall anything about that. -- Infrogmation (talk) 17:17, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I didn't expect you to recall anything about it; I'm simply asking you to check the deleted revisions and then tell me your best guess at what happened, just as you would do if I asked you to look at an image that had been deleted by another admin. Nyttend (talk) 03:13, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On a completely unrelated issue, I was curious about the previous section, so I looked at the CTownNYIfrog1995.jpg DR. I didn't understand However the photo uploaded via Flickr leaves me with no way to expand the license (short of a separate re-upload to Commons not via Flickr). Is it no longer possible to add extra text to a file description at Flickr? I've not used the site in a long time, but several years ago I found an image with a PD release — the uploader couldn't pick that as a license option of course, but he said in the description "this is in the public domain", so I uploaded it as File:Miami County Courthouse clock and Justice.jpg and didn't have any problems once I explained the situation to the reviewer. Nyttend (talk) 13:40, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Music year categories[edit]

I'd completely forgotten about the situation, so I'm left expecting that I accidentally ignored your previous request. I would actually lean more toward a "keep" than a "no consensus" close, but either way I'd not mind your closing of it. You perhaps noticed that I filed a bot request just to tag them — it's too much effort to go around untagging all of them, so I'll be happy to file another bot request if you wish. Nyttend (talk) 12:00, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. I just closed the nom. Cheers -- Infrogmation (talk) 23:07, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of deletion nomination information for File:Anencefalia.jpg[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you recently removed the template and associated text which I had placed on this file. I do not know how familiar you are with deletion nomination procedure, but this is not the way they are resolved. If you wish to contest the nomination, you are welcome to do so on the appropriate page according to the instructions given on the file's main page (which I have reverted to the version I created). Please do not remove the template a second time. Thank you. KDS4444 (talk) 18:32, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am familiar with procedure. I closed the deletion request Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Anencefalia.jpg because the issue seemed to me entirely resolved. If there is some evidence that the image is a copyright violation, please present it and I will be happy to reopen the discussion, or if the evidence is clearly definitive, speedy delete the image. I have seen no evidence presented yet that this is a problem image; your statement "Image lacks EXIF data" seems to be a misunderstanding of the nature & history of EXIF, as briefly addressed on the discussion. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 23:01, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Red River Shreveport Crab Shack.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thank you!

Permission to use your photo?[edit]

Dear Infrogmation, I would like to use a photo of yours (linked below) in a television show. Would you be willing to email me at JEN@COMMITTEEFILMS.COM ? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoboMarkingsCanalStFerry.jpg I'd like to verify that I am able to adhere to your license terms in my project. Photographs of New Orleans[edit]

Hello, Infrogmation. I noticed that you reverted the changes I made to the subcategories here. You might not have known, but categories with names like "Photographs of <city>" are used to hold subcategories for various types of photographs of the named city. Look at these categories to see what I mean:

We don't use "by type" on these categories. What is done is to include the {{Photos}} template (and not the {{Metacat}} template) to explain what the category is used for.

I am going to redo the changes I made. Please don't undo them again, but feel free to ask if you would like more information. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:23, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I would like more information. "Category:Photographs of New Orleans" sounds like it should be a category for, well, photographs of New Orleans. I don't know why a misleading name should be preferred over a precise one. It looks to me like it would promote needless confusion, especially among new users. What is the policy that governs this? Wondering, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:02, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the category sounds like it should contain photographs of New Orleans. The name doesn't really describe what the category is for, but that's the naming convention that is currently used. Look at the subcategories under Category:Photographs by city, Category:Photographs by continent, Category:Photographs by country, and Category:Photographs by region to see more examples. Those categories are all supposed to have the {{Photographs}} template on them to explain what they're for. I agree that it would also be good if the category names were more meaningful, but this is the convention we have at the moment. If it's going to be changed, that should be discussed so that everyone knows about it. In fact, this very issue is under discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2015/11/Category:Photographs. You are welcome to comment there: I think your naming of "by type" is a good one. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:27, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re: File:Low9t14DecFlippedStationWagon.jpg[edit]

I don't know if anyone passed this info to you yet, but the station wagon in File:Low9t14DecFlippedStationWagon.jpg is actually a Mercury Colony Park, not a Ford Country Squire. Just thought you'd like to know. ----DanTD (talk) 15:13, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was going to tell you to go ahead and change it, I see you already did the cat. My original caption I think just had it as "station wagon". I didn't always note the models, as the time and circumstance was rather distracting. Thanks for your work. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:44, 14 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please be sure that categories and any other relevant information are on the image intended to be kept before tagging another version which may have better info to be speedy deleted, thanks. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 21:45, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Misidentified picture[edit]

I happened to run across File:Pelican Park New Orleans postcard.jpg which you uploaded a few years ago. It's actually West Side Park (II) aka West Side Grounds in Chicago. The rooftops behind it are easily identifiable as those of Cook County Hospital.[4]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:09, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the same picture on another postcard, explicitly ID'd as West Side Park.[5]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:12, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting! I was wondering why I couldn't place the buildings in the background. I have no idea why the source misidentified the location. Feel free to change description and categories and rename file as appropirate. Thanks for your work! Cheers. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 13:20, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking care of this! The unfortunate thing is that there's no good picture of Pelican Park. But that's the way things go sometimes. :( ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:24, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your previous "keep" contribution (2011) regarding deletion of one of my images[edit]

Dear Infrogmation, you previously commented "keep" for one of my images flagged for deletion in 2011. I wonder if you can comment on a current case regarding my images. On 3 Nov 2016 a user made various mass deletion requests regarding my images, the majority of which were uploaded in 2010.

See basic income, and various self-portrait images regarding my identity as a public figure.

Perhaps it is not unreasonable to infer the 2010 images were appropriate (not to be deleted) in 2011, because only one image was flagged for deletion in 2011?

It is also worth noting, regarding the current mass deletions, three of the images were threatened with deletion in 2011 due to a question of permission, permission which I had to email to prevent deletion. Surely if the images were unsuitable in 2011, when the "missing permission" issue arose, they would have been flagged for deletion in 2011 instead of merely being subject to a request for copyright permission?

Being a former public figure, of minor fame, I worry I am being unjustly targeted, a possible bias in these flaggings, which could especially be true considering the provocative nature of my fame and campaigning? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SRHSP (talk • contribs) 10:25, 03 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The images clearly seem to be in scope especially because two are in use COM:INUSE. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SRHSP (talk • contribs) 15:05, 03 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, do you remember from which 19th century Cyclopedia this is? With the current information the copyright is not fully clear. If it is a US publication, it would be PD-1923, but if it's e.g. a UK publication, we have to see if it's out of copyright per the PMA+70 rule. Jcb (talk) 23:31, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it certainly was a US publication. Sorry I don't know the full info off hand. I scanned it from a copy in my own collection pre-Katrina. (When uploading I wondered back then why the common practice was not to be more specific when listing source, I just followed the example of how it was done at the time.) If I can add further info to the image I will. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:49, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! For now it's at least sufficient info so that we do not have to worry about the copyright situation. Jcb (talk) 01:53, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nominated File:NewOrleansIsForLovers.jpg for Featured Picture[edit]

I stumbled across this photograph you took in the aftermath of Katrina, and decided to nominate it for featured picture. It is one of the best photographs related to Katrina personally for me, and in general would just like to thank you for your extensive coverage of New Orleans over the years in photographs.
