Ulaanbaatar vs. Ulan Bator[edit]

Hi, has there been any discussion on moving all related categories from the former to the latter on Commons? On enwiki, the naming conventions mandate to use the spelling more common in English. The Commons however are a multilingual project, so it seems to make more sense to use the endonym here. This had been done quite consistently until very recently. Actually, Ulaanbaatar is quite common in English as well, just not common enough to tip the scales according to the strict naming conventions of enwiki (requiring the "most common" name). In other words, both are "English names", with Ulaanbaatar having the benefit of also being valid in most other languages, which is much less the case for Ulan Bator. Do the commons rules say anything about such cases, where there are several possible English names? --Latebird (talk) 01:44, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tirol / Tyrol[edit]

Hello Gryffindor - I saw you had added a couple category names to CommonsDelinker. As that is a semi-automated process, which is not visible from the "receiving end" until it has happened, I removed several protentially controversial name changes you proposed. Changes in location names as you suggested are not trivial (especially if a site had both names throughout history) and should use a "move" request, like this {{move|Category:NEWNAME|Explanation why.}}. The tag will then be left for at least two weeks, and then eventually actioned by an admin (though I admit that the "requested moves" cat has a great backlog so it may take longer).

Please do not mistake my action for opposition to your proposed name changes - for all I know, every single one of them might be absolutely correct and reasonable. Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Some questions[edit]

Hi Gryffindor, I have seen a lot of recat-actions done by you. Regarding these changes I have some questions:

  • I do not understand this edit, as it will define mountain passes to be mountains, which they definitely are not.
  • (the same for mountain huts and mountain pastures, which both aren't mountains either)
  • regarding the case Drei Zinnen vs. Tre Cime di Lavaredo you have argued: move to native name per Commons convention on articles. I have two questions on this
    1. I do not know this convention, although I would prefer this one to the rule I have found here: According to Commons:Categories#Category name the name should be English except life forms, but a mountain for sure is not a life form. So would you please give me a link on a corresponding citation.
    2. for the very special case what makes you sure the native name is Drei Zinnen? The Drei Zinnen are located at the border of South Tyrol (Bolzano) to province of Belluno, which has also been the border between German and Italian speaking people for centuries. Thus Tre Cime di Lavaredo is also a perfectly sound native name. The situation is similar to Matterhorn / Cervino, two names for the same object. Is there a rule / written convention how to resolve these special cases? Moving to and fro as done last days is definitely not the solution. We need some stable naming, accepted by all. WPs link to these commons-pages!
  • What should happen to a category after moving all files to some other category? See Category:Torre Exner and Category:Exnerturm as an example). Leave it empty and untouched, create a #redirect, or add a {{redirect category}}? I always thought the later, according to Commons:Rename a category.

thanks for dropping your questions.

About the mountain passes [1], I think it makes more sense to cluster categories together that are related to each other. I had trouble finding the categories "mountain passes", because I kept on looking in "Mountains", which is a subcategory of "Geography". Since mountain passes can only exist in mountains, it makes sense in my opinion to add "mountain passes" in "mountains", since that is already a subcategory of "Geography". Same thing goes again for "Alpine huts", which are located on mountains by definition. The most important thing is to categorise in such a way to make navigation easy. So for example when looking at "Mountains", one can see with one click all the other important categories such as "Mountain passes", "Alpine huts", maybe even "Flora of the mountains", etc., etc.

About the empty categories, yes indeed, they should either have a redirect or be completely deleted. Empty categories can be deleted with {{speedy delete|empty category}} for example. In the case of "Exnerturm", I left it because I think other users should decide whether a deletion should come in or a redirect.

About the language policy, it stipulates that categories should be in English. This is sometimes a cause for discussion, such as you rightly pointed out with Category:Matterhorn. In the case of Category:Drei Zinnen, that category was created half a year before the other one and in this case goes in order of precedence, before User:Godromil put in his edits. Thanks for your answers, here are mine:
The categories involved (mountains, mountain passes, alpine huts and the like) are kept together one level up Category:Geography of South Tyrol (by administration body), and here Category:Alps (by mountain range); Same kind of objects is kept together as Category:Mountain passes, Category:Mountains and so on. At least this is my understanding. For me categories express either a is-a or a has-a relationship (in an ideal world). So for me geography deals with mountains, mountain passes, valleys and lakes in the mountains and in the planes, but mountains are mountains (having a summit, can be climbed, made of stone;). Alpine huts are not located on (top of) mountains by definition, they are located in the Alps, aren't they. Mostly down in the valleys.
the proceeding on moving categories (making them empty) is described here: The move you did for Drei Zinnen and Tre Cime di Lavaredo was a controversial fix, it was discussed already here and also here and decided the other way round. You have seen that, didn't you? To make it clear, I do not have an opinion on what name to choose (just don't want it to be changed every week), I was asking you for the commons-rules you applied. The order of precedence is a rule that cannot be valid here, as if that were the case, nobody could change anything after done once. (And you would not be allowed to move mountain passes underneath mountains). You are an experienced user with ten thousands of edits, I assume, you know the rules. Also the {{speedy delete|empty category}} is not the correct answer, see Commons:Deletion_Guidelines#Categories, {{redirect category}} IMHO is the correct one. At least I did not find anything else and you could not point me there either.
The point here for me and the reason why I think it is important and such naming issues should be discussed before, is that only consensus makes me confident that things are not undone the other day. There is a policy (English names) we should follow. It not, we should improve the policy. So the question here is whether Drei Zinnen or Tre Cime di Lavaredo is the best English name for a mountain having two different non-English names in different languages (funny question, indeed). One criterion could be to consult the English Wikipedia for the correct English name. I have seen the edits done by Gun Powder Ma, Much89 and you, all of them give me the impression of trying to avoid necessary discussions but to create facts by recategorizing and speedy deleting unwanted remainders. WPs linking to categories being removed like this, will become dangling links.
What is the rule for naming geographic objects with different names in bilingual regions / at a bilingual border? What are the proceedings to clarify disputed cases? Additional rules needed? When I draw the svg image, I take the color from that cross. The flag color are taken from the original image. Your photos from "Sueyda"[edit]

Dear Sir or Madam,

You uploaded splendid photos from the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, including four photos from "Sueyda". I have seen those objects too, and was puzzled about them, because there is no place with that name in Palestine. I have consulted an Ottomanist, who checked old dictionaries and concluded that those altars were in fact from Sidon, which, in Turkish, is still called Seyda. I hope this helps.

The basic category name rule from COM:Cat is: "The category name would be enough to guess the subject". Moreover, in most area's, there is a coherent category naming style. Therefore, I will not waste our time on renaming categories to pinch one or two words of their name thereby jeopardizing the local naming style and coherence or to have to rename it a bit later again because an item with a similar name appears in another area. Downtown Saturday[edit]

We ought to wear a Wiki hat or jacket or something for recognition. Saturday March 6 as you were downtown snapping your excellent series for the Church Street Post Office and improving on my last year's pic of Category:Cary Building (New York City) (Grr, mixed feelings when a more skillful shutterbug betters my old work) I was snapping a sunny pic of Category:195 Broadway and other nearby buildings. In the afternoon I took a boat to Red Hook and got some pix I haven't processed yet due to being in Hudson County with a biker gang yesterday, chasing other pix. So many beautiful sites to photograph; so little time and, for me, so little understanding of the art but it's always at pleasure, tinged with jealousy, to see someone else having a similar idea of fun. I am reverting your mass changes to images in the above category. Please can you discuss them before restoring this change. Typically, the sovereign is styled Queen of Australia, and is addressed as such when in Australia or performing duties on behalf of Australia abroad.   • My preference is for the images to all be collated under Category:Elizabeth II which is a more encompassing and respects the spirit of the Royal styles and titles act which states that each domain is equal, its inappropriate to categorise in such a way as to imply that the other domains are subserviant to the United Kingdom. As you've already stated British monarchs follow a set format "XXX of the United Kingdom"[2] it would be consistant for Australian monarchs follow "xxx of Australia" likewise the Canadian Monarch follows "xxx of Canada" formats. (Without the “I.”) I’m proposing this because the website (The Harold Pratt House and Peterson Hall) omits the “I.”, and Google returns 100× as many results w/o the “I.” – in fact, Wikimedia projects are the main results with the “I.” (Google: “Harold Pratt House”), (Google: “Harold I. First of all, I love your photos! I just wanted to ask you how you got access to Hagia Eirene in Istanbul. I would love to visit it but it seems like finding a way is almost impossible! Thank you in advance!

I am confused[edit]

Hello Gryffindor - unsure why this move [3]? I fully approve of the first move, but the second actually moves the correct category so it doesn't align with the new reichstag dome category style anymore, and also by using a "-" dash does not follow the Commons syntax of creating category names along the lines of "Something of something" in favor of "Something - something". Use of {{Duplicate}}[edit]

Hi, Please only use {{Duplicate}} for exact (or scaled down) copies. If there is an actual difference in the content of the two images, such as if the colours are different or one is a cropped version - then these are not eligible for speedy deletion. For example, File:Tokugawa Yoshinobu.JPG is a scaled down version of File:TokugawaYoshinobu.jpg so is OK, File:Yoshimune.jpg has significantly colours to File:Tokugawa Yoshimune.jpg so is not a duplicate, and File:Tsunayoshi.gif is clearly not a duplicate of File:Tsunyaoshi.jpg.

I've undone a further set of a inapproriate {{Duplicates}} you added. Please bear in mind.
  1. Cropped versions are not duplicates: File:Emperor Tongzhi writing.jpg is not a duplicate of File:《游艺怡情图》.jpg, and in the context of an article about the Emperor is possibly a better image because of that (it excludes the irrelevant part of the portrait).
  2. If two representations of an artwork have different colours, they aren't duplicates. For example, File:The Kangxi Emperor.jpg and File:Portrait of the Kangxi Emperor in Court Dress.jpg have a subtly different appearance. Commons probably should only have one of those files, but that deletion needs to be discussed at a deletion request - the question is which colours are more accurate? That's something a speedy deletion cannot cover. With artwork, accuracy of colour is more important than resolution.

If you feel any of the images you tagged, and I reverted should be deleted, feel free to send them to a Deletion Request - I don't know if any should be kept, but they should all be discussed first (I can't and won't make value judgements on artwork for speedy).--Nilfanion (talk) 09:20, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop that. Your map isn't bad at all, but it simply doensn't match my map series (→Category:SVG locator maps of regions in Italy (location map scheme)). All maps in the category depict the regions of Italy. All maps are supposed to look the same. Consequently all maps show only the regions' borders. They doen't show „de-facto regions“, nor regular provinces, nor wether a region has a special political status or so. Please respect my work and the idea behind that: I follow my own map standard, that shows only administrative borders if corresponding to the highligted area (.i.e.: equal its administrative level). I've provided many european countries with maps for their first level administrative units based on that scheme (Category:SVG locator maps of countries of Europe (location map scheme) by country). Tough work...


If you want depict something different (that's perfectly alright, though) please create different maps as many as you want - but give them new filenames. A suitable filename in your case may be File:Trentino-Alto Adige in Italy (+its provinces).svg. Perhaps you can move your new map afterwards to a ore suitable category? What about the cryptical but self-explanatory Category:SVG locator maps of regions in Italy (location map scheme) (+province borders in the marked region)? By the way: I recommend a thinner or dotted line between the two provinces as users may not realize that this “inner-Trentino-Alto Adige” border is not a regular region's borders like all other borders in that map. Maybe you should consider to draw a map with (thin) borders of all provinces? That way users are maybe less confused why the province borders within Trentino-Alto Adige are depicted while the seem to miss for all other regions. And this maybe a good base for provincial loctor map...Well, how you design the map is your decision: De gustibus non est disputandum. But please respect my maps. Hi. Me again. Stimulated by our discussion, I've created some maps with focus on the provinces. Have a look at: Category:SVG locator maps of provinces in Italy (location map scheme). Based on what you've said, the border between Trentino and Südtirol is thicker than all other provinces' borders. My proposal for the Trentino-Alto Adige map with province borders is like this: File:Trentino-Alto Adige in Italy (+provinces).svg. Maybe you like this one. However, it's your choice. If you disagree with the name of the category, do a discussion or a rename (I'm not objectionable to a rename from "Coat of Arms" to "Emblems"), but don't arbitrarily remove ones and put them in new categories just to be "correct". Just so you don't have the impression that I have been difficult with you in our past disputes just for the sake of it, I would like you to take a look at the above file. It is a prime example of why I have asked you to post your sources when you move or rename files from "Coat of Arms" to "Emblem" and back, and to other such titles. Unlike the Emblem of Israel, this file isn't even heraldic in nature. And yet, according to the Government of Ohio and it's State Constitution, it is indeed a "Coat of Arms". I want to work with you on this issue, not be an impediment, but you have to understand that it is the Government of the Nation (or in this case the State) that decides what their symbol is, and will be called (the same way I understand Ohio's case is a particularily unusual one), not me, and not you. You did have a source for Israel's symbol being an "Emblem" in official text, but you didn't post it for some time after our argument began. I ask you please, when you have sources, to list them right away. It will make this process alot easier, and us less of enemies, and more of colleagues. I've stitched that one for you now, but I have some pointers I think you should think of. First you should take more pictures around the subject; Two images only which are tightly cropped makes it difficult for many projections to fit in a rectangle and still show the whole subject. Second I think you are using a way to high ISO settings. Your images are sadly of rather low technical quality and lots of noise, which makes them extremely difficult to stitch as they lack distinct features to lock onto. The stone mask from the pre-ceramic neolithic period[edit]

Under the Mask page of Wikipedia there is a photo of this stone mask, that i would love to know where it was made. Or found. It's intresting that i found in many places where the "oldest" or "first" is discussed, information on japanese clay mask, found somewhere 10 000 years ago. I am being faced by a two-pronged attack by users Wustenfuchs who refuses to accept my sourced Syria ethnoreligious map. I am also being attacked by user Funkmonk who keeps taking off my map on Alawites in Levant, and replaces it with his own map which is completely inaccurate. I would like to use your photos of Santa Croce in Florence in a book I am writing on medieval Italy. It looks like your permission to use the photo is conditioned on using it only with with "no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts." Does this mean these photos cannot be used in a book?

Also the use of the photo must also make an attribution to you "in the manner specified by the author or licensor". But you have not specified the manner the attribution needs to be made. So is an attribution to you necessary to legally use the photos?
