Witch's broom / mistletoe[edit]

Hi Estormiz- I saw Image:Witch_Broom_Oulu_2006_11_06.JPG and I think it looks much more like mistletoe. Do you agree that it might be that instead of witch's broom? --Eric ^{my en.wp talk page} 15:18, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mistletoe is not native for Northern Finland (maybe not for all of Finland). But I am no botanist so I cannot be so sure of what it is. --Estormiz (talk) 18:18, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm no expert on either, but I'm sure that is not witch's broom in the picture. I've seen a lot of mistletoe, and it looks exactly like mistletoe. I found one website that talks about mistletoe growing in city parks outside its natural range. Finnish wikipedia says that "verifiably there is one mistletoe growing in a garden in Parainen in Finland". The species of mistletoe in Parainen is Viscum album or in Finnish misteli. Parainen is in the south western part of Finland. Oulu is about 600 km up north from Parainen and only about 200 km from Arctic circle. So definitely it is not mistletoe. Witch's broom, especially Taphrina betulina, (btw in Finnish it is called tuulenpesä i.e. "Wind's nest") however is very common in Finland. --Estormiz (talk) 14:28, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I've learned something new. Those growths in the tree in Oulu just didn't look to me to be part of the tree--they seemed at first to be hanging. But I found another picture of a birch here with many growths, just like yours. I didn't realize there could be so many in one tree! Thanks for the info. The renovated industrial building in Toppila[edit]

Looks exciting. =) Not being an Oulu native, I've only seen the building in its current, renovated condition. Quite a change.

Got any other old photos from that same area? Uploading some photos taken from the harbour of Toppila when it actually still had some activity going on would also be great. --Methem (talk) 16:20, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

At the time (before digicameras) when all of the photographs had to be printed, I did not take many landscape pictures - at least not many without family or friends on the foreground :) Toppila harbour has not been in full use for so long that I have to say that I do not remember it as a real busy harbour. I've only got a faint memory of some ships in that harbour. Sorry. I will look through my old photo prints when I have more time, I might still have some pictures from Toppila and other places in 1980's or 1990's. -Estormiz (talk) 16:47, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. And yep, I guess it would require going like 30 years (or more?) back in time to see the harbour real busy.

We wanted to let you know that we've used one of your pictures in a project of ours: http://litpics.tumblr.com/post/14374429662/lit-critical-miscellanies-vol-3-of-3-by-john

We created a computer program to generate random pairings of sentences from public domain texts and public domain / creative commons images. Some of the pictures we've selected come from the Wikipedia Commons. All the pictures we select ourselves, but the pairings and the text are random. Of these pairings that are generated, we only post the most interesting combinations.

We welcome any feedback about our site.

* I agree to the CA problem. But a perspective correction would lead to massive distortions. The camera is obvisiously pointing upstairs so it is absolutely natural to see leaning verticals. A small composition issue: this symmetrical composed image is not perfectly symmetric, but this small issue should not lead to a decline. Löytyisikö kuva-arkistosi Oulu-otosten joukosta mitään rullalautailuun "liittyvää"? Esimerkiksi katukuvia, joissa näkyy jokin kaupungissa olleista rullalautailurampeista tai muista vastaavista laitteista? Olen jostain ymmärtänyt, että Heinäpäässä ollut iso ramppi olisi aikaisemmin ollut muun muassa Raksilassa ja myös Pateniemessä, ja minua kiinnostaisivat esim. sen vaiheet.

in the template Template:Europeyear there must have been parameters 3 and 4 in the past, but after changes it only needs (and uses) two parameters - the first is the decade eg. 177 and the second is the year eg. 7. Templates by year[edit]

Hi Estormiz. Thank you so much for all your work on templates, and generally on categories by year. And a special Tank You! for your correction of the template related to "Category:Continents by year". I tried there to make the best, but finally the result was worse. I asked to some admins to correct this template, but nobody did it. Really, what I have seen in so many categories, the most of the template by year doesn't work correctly. I.e. if the years are in the tousands, all it's ok; but if there are years of hundreds or of tens too, then the templates doesn't work correctly: the list of the years became a mess, where after the year 1599 comes year 1, and then 123, and then 14, and then 152, and... and.. and finally year 1600 and 1601. If there are also years before Christ, then the chaos is total! Some times I made order using the sortkey, but now I know that the correct way is to correct the template. Actually the 4 subcats were the only ones in the correct place, the other subcats have not been "refreshed" on the the new template. Saving the subcat without making any changes moves the sybcat in the right position. Hi Estormiz. Here I am...! ;-)) Can you heelp me in some templates?

Category:Decades by month and Category:Establishments in Iran by year needs a template that finally all theyr subcats are connected between them, and are categorized in theyr flat list too.
In Category:Months in Tunisia the template doesn't work correctly, see each subcat. The categories are translated automatically, so they became red. Really wrong!

Hi Estormiz. Do you know that in Category:Months in Europe works two different templates? E.g. Category:January 1862 in Europe and Category:January 1924 in Europe. I had a discussion with user Apalsola, and he told me that one of these template (the most used in this category) is a deprecated template. I think that deprecate template must be cancelled. Hi DenghiùComm. There are many places that have got two or even more templates doing the same thing. It is much work to go through the pages using the deprecated templates and change the template used without ability to use external tools like Autowikibrowser or such. Seems like the CanadaYear -template is quite sophisticated and it has been quite recently updated. It is also used in more categories than the new template not in quite many though. The CanadaYear template is protected so if you would like to have changes in the template you will have to make an "Edit request" in the Talkpage of the template. Hello Estormiz! You deleted the "Category:Night by city|Rome" from "Category:Night in Rome". But it is not a redundant category, it is a parallel category. There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
