Macedonia ww2[edit]

In your image of the Greece during WW2, you have wrongly labeled "Macedonia" and "Thrace." Until the 1980s, the region was collectively known as "Ministry of Northern Greece" and only during the 1980s was it renamed "Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace". Please update the image to accurately reflect the political administrations of all three regions of Macedonia. That is a great start! Now, what should be a very wonderful undertaking, would be the combination of all territories ever occupied by both Rome AND Macedonia. Could you make this image, PLEASE? I'd be extremely happy to see it and most other people probably would too.

I think this map would help begin the anachronistic overlap of Macedonia in the East and Rome in the West, Europe's two ancient empires of Hellenic descent. You and I know that Alexander's glories were the basis for Rome.

This would probably put the "Indo-European" language family into historical perspective, as well as the division of Oriental Satem and Occidental Centum. Plus, this map would show in reality a better perspective than those "Aryan race" theorists have been able to come up with. I already brought up the discussion of Medieval progression and modern nationalist romanticism on Wikipedia's Humanities Reference Desk and asked them about the veracity behind German and Russian claims to inheritance from Rome, but they didn't seem to understand. I think the Russian claims were from Greek colonies in the Crimea and Roman conquest of Scythia Minor, aside from the Orthodox Church connection when the Muslims took over Constantinople. The German claim is very obviously due to the Roman conquests as far as the Elbe, Germans in the legions and Charlemagne as king of both Gaul and Italy, founding the Holy Roman Empire with Papal approval. The discussion eventually included a consideration of Christianity as the whole realm of Roman inheritance, with Islam as succeeding Persia (in tandem with Alexandrian links to Aryan theories) likewise. Hmm, I rejected one of the DR's, based on COM:DP. I checked the other (Ieros Locos) but it is a bit complicated. BTW, it cannot be {{GFDL}}, it is either some flavor of PD or still under copyright.

Now about 79.103.21.31, it is an anonymous IP address, the usual cover for vandals and other antisocial internet lurkers. It could be a public computer facility or an internet cafe, in which case it is pointless to take any action. We must wait and see if the problem persists. First time I see this one. I believe it's similar to military flags like w:en:File:HellenicArmySeal.jpg. I don't know if it is authorized by the ministry of Merchant Marine or it is an in-house development. BTW, Hellenic Coast Guard rank flags are like this File:Greek_Navy_Admiral_Flag.svg but with the colors of the canton only reversed (blue star on white square).

I also saw this same flag at Itea Port Authority last Thursday, so it is official. I noticed that someone had filed a deletion request for the flag. Just one thing I noticed... the colour of the blue on the flags is lighter than the one you've depicted in the SVG file (at least, that's how I remember them from my time in the Army) - closer to the shade of blue on this flag - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Crete_1898.svg. Map Byzantine themes 1025[edit]

Hi mate. Great map, and regards from a fellow Balkanologist and (amateur) cartography. I just wanted to point out to you that the map is slightly incorrect in its depiction of the coastal Slavic principalities (ie the locations of Terbounia, Zachlumia, neretvia, Duklia). Furthermore, it is contested whether Serbia was directly ruled by a strategos. There was a seal found of Constantin Diogenes stating that he was Strategos of Sirmuim, Thessaloniki and Serbia, but this might either have referred to Servia in Thessaly, or his rule in Serbia was largely nominal. In either case, Stephenson and Fine both argue that rule in Serbia and Bosnia was in the hands of local vassaled elites. Certainly, archaeological evidence suggests that the Byzantines rested their northern borders in the 11th cetury along a curved line stretching from Dyrrachium, Ras (Novi Pazar), Liplan to Sirmium. I know that the major focus of the map is the themese, but if you wanted to make your map 100% accurate, have a look at the locations of the abovementioned statelets on my maps on my user page. I've been watching your Roman Empire map in 400Ad and it leave me jaw wide open, its amazing, I would like to ask if you could share how you do such maps, lines, names, symbols and what program you use, it's really a treat to see them.

On a final note, I would like to ask where you found the source map for the roman empire project, I'm looking to use it for a similar project of my own (an alternative reality rome) and would be great to use it, the link you give in the description "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topographic_map#Global_1-kilometer_map" doesn't appear to work unfortunately.

Geia-sou - strange enough for me but it seems that in Greek the name of Kote Hristov is written with double tau and the name of the village (former Roulia) named after him - with one. Regarding the old flags, dating from 1821, I would say to keep them, although I am pretty sure that Greco22 (talk · contribs) copied them from some website. Exact (or almost exact) recreations of these flags don't produce new copyrights.
Regarding the city logos, I believe all of them are quite recent designs and under copyright protection.

Seal of Omurtag[edit]

Der angebliche Stempel von Omurtag wird in "История на България" (Band 2, 1981) goldene Medaille von Khan Omurtag bezeichnet. Die Legende zum Bild lautet: "Goldene Medaille von Khan Omurtag. IX Jahrhundert. Bild von Omurtag mit griechischer Inschrift. Gefunden in Veliko Tarnovo. Filiale des Nationalen historischen Museums in Veliko Tarnovo." Das zitierte Buch ist eine Kompilation von Artikeln mehrer Autoren und ist reichlich bebildet. Die Artikel sind von Autoren geschrieben, die mit ihren Namen stehen, enthalten wissenschaftlichen Apparat und sind nicht schlecht auch wenn manche zum Teil schon überholt. Das ist aber normal - das Buch ist ja mittlerweile 30 Jahre alt. Wer aber für die Bebilderung verantwortlich war, ist unbekannt. Manchen Legenden sind nicht optimal und entsprechen eher die für populärwissenschaftliche Bücher übliche Qualität und Ausführlichkeit. Unklar ist, was die Medaille in Veliko Tarnovo zu suchen hat. Es gibt eine protobulgarische Inschrift, die in Veliko Tarnovo gefunden wurde und die aus Pliska oder Preslav stammt (kann mich nicht mehr genau erinnern) und von Herrschern des Zweiten bulgarischen Reiches absichtlich dorthin transportiert wurde. Vielleicht hat die Medaille das selbe Schiksal gehabt. Für diese Frage fehlt mir die nötige wissenschaftliche Literatur. Laut dieses Blogs lautet die Inschrift der Medaille: САNЕS VВНГI ОМОРТАГ. Das ist eine Mischung aus lateinischen, griechischen und kyrillischen Buchstaben. Das lässt vermuten, dass die Medaille in der zweiten Hälfte des 9. oder der ersten Hälfte des 10. Jahrhunderts hergestellt wurde, als im Bulgarischen Reich Alphabete und Einflüsse noch konkurierten. Die Medaille scheint einige byzantinische Vorbilder zu ähneln, wie diese z.B.: . Als Auftraggeber steht Symeon in Verdacht, der Omurtag als christlicher Herrscher dargestellt sehen wollte um sich als Nachfahre christlicher Herrscher zu präsentieren. Die Beschiftung der Datei ist zur Zeit nicht perfekt, aber das Artefakt scheint tatsächlich Omurtag abbilden zu wollen. Für letzte Sicherheit könnte man sich nach weiterer wissenschaflticher Literatur umschauen. Die protobulgarische Periode der bulgarischen Geschichte von Veselin Beševliev enthält am Ende einige Fotos, eventuell auch eins von dieser Medaille und weitere Infos. --Alexandar.R. Zusatz: Das mit Symeon ist wohl nur Spekulation. Veselin Besheliev in Прабългарски епиграфски паметници (=Die protobulgarischen Inschriften, 1963) liest keine kyrillische Buchstaben (nur griechische und lateinische). Er meint, es handele sich um eine protobulgarische Inschrift und datiert sie vor 822. Das ist wisschenschaftliche Literatur. Nur das vierte Bild (File:MadridSkylitzesCoronationBasilFol80rb.jpg) hat mir bisschen Kopfzerbrechen bereitet. Grabar und Manoussacas schreiben: "A sa droite, Basile à la tête d'autres geurriers, s'avance triompant vers l'empereur, après ses victoires en Thrace." Woher sie es wissen wollen, dass Basileios die Kavallerie anführt, ist mir nicht klar geworden. Der linke Teil des Bildes ist nicht beschriftet. Ausserdem ist Thrakien hier eine Irreführung. Die Armee kommt aus Thrakesion zurück (oder?). Die Sache zuende zu recherchieren, habe ich aber nicht geschaft: weiss nicht, wo die Ortschaft Choros liegt, wo der Mord stattgefunden hat. Habe gesehen, dass weitere Miniaturen hochgeladen wurden (File:Michael I (Roman emperor), coronation.jpg, File:Romans (Niketas Oryphas) punish Cretan Saracens.jpg,...) - leider nicht ganz frei von jpeg- und Druckraster-Problemen.

First thing, I resigned as a Commons admin a few weeks ago, I was spending too much time here and I was unhappy with many things taking place.

Now on the subject of the map, it seems that almost anything is accepted on Commons, even it is POV. However, I believe that File:Fixing the problems of Balkans and Macedonia.JPG falls under original research, as it is a proposal of what might have happened if the uploader was around in 1918. Hi, Constantine. Mir geht es gut, bin aber leider so beschäftigt, dass ich in letzter Zeit die Wiki-Aktivitäten auf die lange Bank schieben musste. Miniaturen über die russische Invasion c. 970 gibt es bei Skylitzes in der Tat viele. Auch in der Radziwiłł Chronicle gibt es einige genau zu diesem Thema. Viel möchte ich jetzt nicht versprechen, da diese Woche nicht besser wird und ich vom Wochenende bis Mitte Oktober auf Reise bin. Falls ich überhaupt bisschen freie Zeit finde, werde ich davor nicht mehr als ein-zwei Miniaturen hochladen können. Categories "Blue and white flag" & "Flags of Greece"[edit]

Of cource, "not all Grek flags are blue and white", but don't litter the category "Blue and white flags" with practically the same flags of the Greece. One of that will be enough. Those, who want to see other variants, no doubt, will gess to enter the category "Flags of Greece"! Besides, all Greek flags are spread along the whole category "Blue and white flags", they are present at the different pages of that. It's, really, so uncomfotable and irritates. Sorry for boter. Maps about wars of Belisarius in 6th century[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you are very skilled in making maps. In Finnish Wikipedia I have been expanding the articles about Byzantine general Belisarius and his campaigns in the 6th century. Unfortunately there is not lots of maps about them in Commons. So I was wondering if you have time to make some. In the Ian Hughes book "Belisarius: The last Roman general" (ISBN 978-1-59416-085-1) there are maps and diagrams about Belisarius campaigns and battles, such as Battle of Dara, Battle of Callinicum, Vandalic War, Battle of Ad Decimum, Battle of Tricamarum, Gothic War and the Siege of Rome. I was wondering that if it's possible then I could scan them and send them to you (Unless there are copyright laws that prevent this). You could make english .SVG versions and then I could make Finnish versions about them. Of course, I understand that you are probably busy so you don't have to if you don't have any time. Cyprus was a condominium shared between the Caliphate and Byzantium, and although apparently both maintained some sort of military and administrative presence there, I am not sure whether it would be correct to include it in either. Certainly the Abbasids don't seem to have regarded it as part of their dominions, only a kind of subdued tributary region. The Byzantines did make a few efforts to regain it and controlled it for a few years a couole of times, but until 958 the official status quo was as a condominium. BTW, I also think that we should use a lighter shade of green to colour Crete, the Aghlabids and Khurasan, which were more nominally rather than actually part of the Abbasid state. Fall of the Western Roman Empire[edit]

I have just put this Wikipedia article into mainspace. It has a variety of maps, all of them pre-existing since I have never tried making maps before. They include an animated gif of the expansion and decline of Rome to 530. They are acceptable, but I was thinking of replacing them by a series of gifs based on your admirable File:The Roman Empire ca 400 AD.png, to illustrate every significant change in Roman control from about 300 onward, based mainly on the series of maps in Barbarian Migrations and the Roman West, 376-568 (Cambridge Medieval Textbooks) by Guy Halsall. I suppose I can learn to use a photo-editing program and indeed my wife can help me. But I wondered if you had done anything of the sort, or if you might be considering doing so? Many thanks for your kind words. I suppose I really need your advice. I like the present animated gif, but how difficult would it be to do something better? I would like to make the entire thing easy to comprehend with a fairly brief glance. I had in mind your file, with layers representing the various stages of loss of control, possibly also some symbols for major battles, and using dated versions going down the right side of the article so that the base map is standard and easier for the reader to interpret. Using your map would allow the interested reader to bring up the full version with all the detail at each date. Separate is the issue of an animated gif, but if this were made by shrinking the dated versions and re-saving them as gifs, this would allow us to present the entire story in one fairly simple animated picture at the top of the page. It wouldn't show all your detail, but it would introduce the reader to the look of your map and enable them to interpret later individual maps more easily. It looks practical to me, even with a free program such as paint.net, and I have the references and the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World. It would take me months (I'm busy in real life and my holiday will as usual involve grubbing about looking for Roman pots), but if you think it's a good way to present the information and also a practical project for a newbie map-editor, I'll give it a go. Your comments on this project will be very welcome.

I have your File:The Roman Empire ca 400 AD.png of course, but it would also be useful to have your base map - that is to say your cropped version of User:Koba-chan/Topographic map, in case we feel the need to superimpose areas of it.

Hmmm, I sort of see what you're getting at. My opinion however is that when the primary purpose of a map is to show territorial extent, one should avoid any geophysical features other than rivers, and have a simple map with coloured territories and (optionally, depending on the size of the map and the desired level of detail) the main administrative divisions and settlements, e.g. [2], [3], [4], [5] etc. I would only suggest going to the effort of making maps similar to my 400 AD map for "landmark" or representative moments in time. I am working, for instance, on a map of 565 AD, based on the same format as my 400 AD map. On the base map, I can either upload it here or send it be email, whatever you prefer. I'd wager good money that it dates to 1919, though. It comes from the well-known photo atelier "Padova Freres", and is clearly a contemporary postcard. Bref, il n' y a pas du "Freedom of Panorama" en Grece, et par consequence absolument rien n'est libre du droit d'auteur simplement parce qu'il est dans un lieu public :(. Hello Takabeg! I've posted my view in the deletion discussion. On the Indo-Persian weapons category, my knowledge is limited. At first glance, the category name is valid, since Persia and much of northern India formed a cultural continuum since Mongol times, but I cannot really tell if the individual pieces listed therein are representative "Indo-Persian" pieces or belong to a broader spectrum of military technology. Declined rename requests[edit]

Hi. You did a bundle of rename requests recently. I have declined the proposed renames due to the change of language in the proposed filenames. Δεν είδα ότι είναι piped, είδα δυο φορές το CNG. Πρόσφατα διαγράψανε όλα τα ελ. νομίσματα νεότερα από 70 χρόνια. Flag in the Catalan Atlas[edit]

I wanted to draw your attention to a flag depicted in the Catalan Atlas. It flies over Cyprus and it has white and blue strips, which reminded me of the Greek flag and a red or gold cross with what look like 4 'B' letters around it, which reminded me of one of the flags used by the Palaeologhi dynasty. I thought this combination was very interesting, blue and white (greyish?) stripes also feature in the flag of Philadelphia, so I couldn't help but wonder whether there is any connection to the modern flag colours? I think that Cyprus was not at that time part of the Empire but Philadelphia was. Since you have contributed so much with regards to flags and history maps, I thought I could ask you if you knew anything about this flag. I also tried to create a file, not successfully;

Hello! It is rather easy, and not Byzantine-related at all, I am afraid. The cross is the gold-on-white Jerusalem Cross, and the blue-and-white bars are the blazon of the Lusignans. There are a few minor issues with the names, e.g. the Byzantines would use Αχρίδα rather than Οχρίδα, Παραδούναβον seems to have been more common than Παρίστριον, and IIRC Θεωδορούπολις was only briefly used under John Tzimiskes and not after. Also, "Θρακησίων" is cut off at "Θρακη" leading to potential confusion. The main problem is that the map itself is rather inaccurate, with the provincial boundaries all over the place. You can get a better idea of the provincial boundaries (for the Balkans and Asia Minor at least, the East is totally inaccurate owing to a bad basemap I had used) from this. Greece (ancient) maps[edit]

Hallo, I was asked by the Graphic Lab to color and upload maps for localization of ancient sites of Greece, by modifying the existent modern maps. I'm not expert at all about ancient Greece, for I'm just a "tool" doing what others require. Now they asked me to remove internal modern boundaries from all the maps and I would like to modify also the wrong region boundaries. Please could you tell me precise instruction on where to place the right boundaries? Hi FocalPoint! AFAIK these crosses are the final design of the 1974 version of the cross, finalized in 2003. The other design, with the national emblem in place of the crown, was a "transitional" adopted in 1974, but they stayed on on the principle of ουδέν μονιμότερον του προσωρινού and the Greek state's general indifference towards medals, symbols, etc. I will categorize them accordingly. Source-Map[edit]

This map's source, from which all others stem cannot even be found online (Fanula Papazoglu), is outdated and misread as whilst the sources in the page state up to Epirus it has been expanded to the south inside Epirus despite the fact that during that time Hellenistic kingdoms existed (Antigonus III Doson, Demetrius II of Macedon & others from 300 to 201 BC) whose borders are known and were above far above Apollonia halfway to Epidamnus. It pretty much erases 100 years of known historical facts.

Poeticbent, I happen to be well read in World War II, thanks for assuming otherwise. Consequently I know a few things: First, there never was a "definitive" map of GPO, or of the overall German war aims. Hence presenting a map which shows stuff like annexations in the West as well (Low Countries, the Franche Comte, etc, which were all proposals), or the renaming of Berlin, which was never decided formally, is a) not about the GPO, and b) most likely to be a modern amalgamation of the various Nazi territorial acquisition schemes. Second, you have found this map not in a book or historical archive, but on imgur, with zero evidence as to its provenance. Its supposed identification and origin are your interpretation, there is no evidence presented other than your statement above "Clearly, this is an old map from World War II, not a modern map.". Third, it is perfectly possible to use Inkscape, or Photoshop, or any one of several image-making tools to create a map that looks "authentic". An "old-looking" map does not have to be old, unless you can verify its physical existence. Judging by its digital representation is never a good idea. Anyone with an inkling of the capabilities of image-making software can tell you that. Fourth and most importantly, how much more clear can it get when I actually provide you with the link of the original location of this map, published in 2013, and in a style and subject consistent with the artist's other creations (cf. The result was stunningly real-looking, but it was imaginary nevertheless, as I have learned thanks to you. The borders of German Reichskommissariats (R.K.) were correct. Renaming Berlin as 'Germania' came from "Hitler's Table Talk" of 8 June 1942. The extension of Nazi GENERALPLAN OST colonization by artist 1Blomma,[12] is actually confirmed by the German Historical Museum, here. A number of public domain files provide further proof of various specifics: File:Administrative divisions of Germany, February 1944.png, File:Greater German Reich in 1942.png, File:General Government for the occupied Polish territories (1941).png, File:Reichskommissariat Kaukasus.svg, File:Reichsgau Flandern.svg, etc. If I had time, I would produce a compilation of these maps for Commons to show the greatest extend of GENERALPLAN OST based on proof (similar, but more accurate). Your claim that there never was a map of the overall German war aims felt like original research to me because it was contradicted by the Deutsches Historisches Museum webpage (linked). Hi! I generally use Inkscape for all maps. For geophysical backgrounds, I have used free rasterized maps. There are several available (they are all referenced in the relevant maps' description) but you can always generate new ones with a GIS software suite. Greek flags[edit]

Would you happen to know when these flags were actually introduced?:

These flags appear in the Royal Decree of 3 June 1914 so I was wondering whether the years given are wrong or were they introduced earlier/later?

Actually described in the Royal Decree of April 1833? I believe it mentions the naval ensign (war flag), pennant, royal standard (which is what I think this file supposedly depicts??), and civil ensign (ensign without coat of arms) but not a "state flag"? Am I mistaken or is the "state flag" with the Wittelsbach coat of arms really just the royal standard or is the "state flag" described somewhere else?

What flags does the 1858 Royal Decree describe?

Thanks for the heads up, I also had come upon the discrepancy, and was puzzled. I've corrected the various "state flags" now. The 1858 decree describes the ensign, royal standard, pennants (επισείων), naval jack (επίσημον), swallow-tailed squadron commander flag (ψαλιδωτόν μοιράρχου), the use of foreign flags (only when carrying foreign sovereigns), and the flags of the port authorities (use of the ensign in specific sizes). I saw that you uploaded a new version of File:Northern Expedition 1926–28.svg in which you converted text into paths.
Did you consider this fonts/text before doing it and that the maps I design is made to be viewed at 100%. All the png's/thumbnails is out of my controll but I'm very aware there is a problem with rendered png's (thumbnails) that are not in 100% and text stretching. This has to do with the library that wikimedia uses and is out of my control. This library may be updated tomorrow or next year, I don't know, but then the thumbnail issue will be gone and we will have files with no text information in them.
As you can see on that file I have tagged it with "W3C valid source code", did you check your version for that? If it's still not valid that should be removed.

Hi Actia Nicopolis, if you tag it with the "bad name" template, then a bot usually moves them automatically. If it is simply a category move, the you have to do it manually. Commons is even less patrolled for nationalist POV-pushing than regular Wikipedia, and any user can practically upload and add whatever one wishes, as long as there is no copyright infringement. Yes, that Turkish user is also responsible, as I see now, for moving Category:Great Fire of Smyrna to Category:Great Fire of Izmir. Such edits are rather typical of a certain type of POV-pusher (e.g. moving Adrianople to Edirne, Constantinople to Istanbul, etc. even when the common name at the time of an event was other). Many Turks have some deep-seated insecurities in such matters (of course, they are not alone in that, I know plenty of Greeks who refuse to acknowledge that "Greek coffee" is "Turkish coffee").... I cut out the nationality descriptions from the tr sentence (as the photo simply isn't labeled as such) and will seek to have the Turkish sentence retouched.

Interestingly enough I noticed something about the films The Promise and The Ottoman Lieutenant, the former a film about the Armenian genocide funded by an Armenian film businessman and the latter a Turkish-produced film that was released around the same time as The Promise (to the point where when The Promise changed its release date, The Ottoman Lieutenant did as well). The characters in the former call the Ottoman capital "Constantinople" as it was known in the West at the time (apparently "Stamboul" was the name for the urban core in western languages) while in the latter characters call the city Istanbul. The postcards I read on the Commons show that Constantinople was the French/Western name at the time.

That is not entirely incorrect: in Turkish, the name has been Istanbul since the 15th century, although officially it remained also Konstantiniyye until the 1920s. Same for the other cities. So in a Turkish-language movie, this use is entirely expected and proper. However, where our Turkish friends step over into POV/nationalist territory is when they try to impose these names on Western, historical names from before the 1930s, when the Turkish names were adopted internationally. Because the Western names usually derive from the Byzantine/Greek past of these cities, I know, from my interactions with them, that they interpret every attempt to change them as a covert challenge on the "Turkishness" of these cities (especially if it comes from a Greek like myself).

I have Turkish friends who find this as ridiculous as I do, but they are rather a (vanishingly small) minority, especially in Erdogan's Turkey. This is the same people who almost 600 years later, still celebrates the conquest of Constantinople with big spectacles, while insisting that it will "never become Constantinople again". BTW I'm still looking for someone who could transcribe Ottoman Turkish text in its original form so we could actually see the typed text and plug it into an online dictionary or something. I've asked on trwiki's village pump and people gave romanized Turkish text, which is also very useful (having modern Turkish text is great!), yet the original Perso-Arabic script would be great too under the language header "ota". The Roman Empire ca 400 AD[edit]

I want to make a map for the game warzone.net (a risk game). You can create maps yourself as player with Inkscape. I really wanted to make a late Roman Map, because they have a lot more provinces than the beginning of the republic/empire. I can't any find any good maps besides this one (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Roman_Empire_ca_400_AD.png), so my question is if i can use this map for this game and if you agree with it if can receive the SVG file of this map?

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. An image you uploaded in 2011, File:Assassination of George I of Greece, 1913.png, is being used in an article at English Wikipedia, w:Alexandros Schinas, and I'm trying to find the author, publisher, and original publication date for the lithograph. (There's a similar image uploaded by someone else at File:Alekos Schinas Killing2.jpg.) I'm having trouble reading the fine print on the very bottom line of the inscription on the picture. I was wondering if you scanned this yourself, and if you might know or be able to read it better in the source book, the identity of the author, publisher, and what the original publication date was for the lithograph? Hi Levivich, I really don't remember where I got it from. I've uploaded a few of these lithographs, variously from the internet, a publication on lithographs on Greece and the Balkan Wars that I found in my uncle's office, and other books. The author is indicated in the description, it is Karl Haupt, you can see his signature in the lower left corner. The publisher was the bookshop of Drakos Papadimitriou (lower right corner), and the date must have been 1913, lithographs were always about contemporary events. How did you know it was Haupt? I see a partial signature in the bottom-left corner but it doesn't appear to have those letters. It looks like the author changed a few times in the file's edit history. And just to check, the description says it came from a book of lithographs—do you have even some guesses at which books it might have been? Hi Veverve. I am unfamiliar with this, but from looking at the description, I don't see how this applies here. The new versions are corrected representations of the topic (Byzantine imperial flags in the 14th century), so I don't understand why a new file needs to be created. Certainly for File:Byzantine imperial flag, 14th century.svg, as its original creator, I am perfectly happy to have it as it is, and given the heavy usage of both flags in Wikipedia projects, I don't think that moving the 'new' versions into new files would be a good idea. I believe those changes are important enough to require splitting them into two. You can put the old versions you consider faulty as new files and keep the new ones in the original file name.

The faulty ones are, if I understand correctly, still of historical importance as they represent Byzantine flags as reproduced by the West (i.e. in an improper way). On the other hand, the newest ones are reconstructions based not on actual datas from that time period, but on educated guesswork to try to be as close as possible to reality. Therefore, since those two sets of images are of a different topic, I think they should be split. Veverve (talk) 19:03, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite. The former versions are 'reconstructions' too, in the sense that the highly stylized Betas used there are not really attested in either Byzantine or Western contemporary designs. Both flags were intended to represent the actual flags in use at the time, not Western reproductions (which, again, they are not). Western reproductions from that period are actually much closer to the 'new' designs than the previous ones. The matter is simple: the original creator of the square flag (en:User:Dragases) had used the stylized versions because these were then the only ones available, being already present in a number of similar flags floating around the internet (if memory serves, the flag was based on a Flags of the World prototype). When I made the tailed banner, I, somewhat lazily, relied on that, without redrawing the shapes to accord more to the original depictions. The recent edits are merely long-overdue corrections to these designs, and do not affect their purpose or topic. Constantine ✍ 19:16, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at http://www.euraldic.com/lasu/bl/bl_p_al.html, and it says the Palaiologos dynasty emblem has "quatre B" ("four B"), so File:Palaiologos dynasty flag.svg is wrong even in its reliance on euraldic.com.
Also, I have added all the derivative flags of File:Palaiologos dynasty flag.svg I could find to the "Other versions" of File:Palaiologos dynasty flag.svg. I guess you could try to fix them. Hi Veverve, I plan to fix the problematic flags ASAP, in so far as they can legitimately be said to be simply distorted versions of the actual flag. File:Byzantine Navy flag.svg for example is not, since there is no documented use of this design in this form. In other words, I will not touch the flags in Category:Fictional or conjectural flags of the Byzantine Empire, because most of these designs are simply invented. @Veverve: the firesteels in the later Western arms are quite correct; the Bs were interpreted this way early on (the term is used even in a Byzantine source, and the Serbian cross, which is obviously derived from it and has 'open' letters similar to a C or crescent, is attested already in the late 14th century) and the arms should remain as they are, as they represent the final shape of the design. You corrected the Bs of File:Flag of PalaeologusEmperor.svg, but by doing so the image does not represent the flag with corrupted Bs which can be found in the Conoscimento de todos los Reinos. This means the current version is no a SVG versio of a historical representation, but an origina work. Therefore, I feel the image should be reverted back to its 12:52, 22 March 2020 version. Hi Ahmet Q.. It mostly derives from the sources used in the equivalent article. There were no clear boundaries of the theme, and especially during the 10th century, during the wars with the Bulgarians, Byzantine authority encompassed mostly the coast. Alright thanks for the info, but now that I look back at Tom's new map it seems like there is an error: Vlora is wrongly positioned on the map so I am not sure what he really wanted to depict in the south. But could you expand the theme of Dyrrachium in your map to include more of Northern Albania like Tom did? I do think that the northern part of his map is still correct imo. Ahmet Q. Byzantine emperors[edit]

@Cplakidas: Hi! I've categorized Byzantine emperors also under Roman emperors because Wikipedia lists also Byzantine emperors under Roman emperors. And, for many (myself as well), they're considered "Eastern Roman". They never called themselves "Byzantines". @Mhmrodrigues: I sort of agree, but just as on Wikipedia, for categorization we follow historiographic and common name conventions, and in both cases, the 'Byzantine' emperors exist and the term is more common for the post-395 emperors than 'Roman' emperors plain and simple. You're welcome. English Wiki also have another confusion related to birthplace of en:Aga Khan I, it's not en:Kahak, Qom but en:Kahak, Delijan. Articles containing this mistake are: en:Aga Khan I, en:Kahak, en:Kahak, Qom, en:Shah Khalil Allah III, en:History of Nizari Isma'ilism, and en:List of Isma'ili imams.

Sources: this article says "Kahak near Maḥallāt" and Kahak, Delijan is the closest one to Mahallat, among other Kahaks. Another Iranica's article gives coords 34°10′53″ N, long 50°19′60″ E which again fits for Kahak, Delijan, and article also describes a caravanserai which you can see on the Google maps (north), along with Ismaili castle (west). Liebe Cplakidas. Seit einigen Tagen bemühe ich mich riesig, die islamischen Münzen von ihren generellen Kategorien zu den spezifischen der verschiedenen Kalifen zu ordnen, und wo die Kategorien der Kalifen fehlen, sie zu erstellen. Auch die Münzen der einzelnen Kalifen waren nicht sichtbar, da sie nur unter ihren Namen versteckt waren und nicht mit den jeweiligen Münzkategorien verbunden waren. Nun, die Kategorie der Kalifen XYZ (z.B. Abassid) ist eine generelle Kategorie, die ihre Namen enthält; und die Münzkategorie XYZ ist ebenfalls eine generelle Kategorie. Die Verbindung dieser beiden Kategorien ist sehr nützlich, da man sofort überprüfen kann, ob eine bestimmte Münze die Kategorie ihres Kalifen hat und ob die Kategorie des Kalifen eine Unterkategorie von Münzen hat, was auch wegen der Namen eine sehr ermüdende Arbeit ist, da die Kalifen Namen unterschiedlich geschrieben sind. Deshalb sage ich Ihnen nur eins: Wenn Sie gegen diese enorme Anstrengung von mir arbeiten, dann gebe ich sofort die ganze Arbeit auf, und Sie können dann (hoffentlich) selber weitermachen. Was möchten Sie tun? Noch eins: die Kategorie "Kings on coins" hat einen schlechten Namen, der bald in "Coins by king name" geändert werden muss. Die Kategorie enthält alle Münzen der Welt Staten nach ihren Herrscher. Nun alle aussert di islamischern Herrscher. Alles gut ! Prosit !

Hallo DenghiùComm! Erstens, ich nehme an, wir beide sind da, um was Sinnvolles zu machen, und wir sollten mit einander sprechen und zusammen arbeiten und von einander lernen. Ultimata helfen da nicht.

Zweitens, ich verstehe ungefähr, worauf Sie hinaus wollen, aber trotzdem ist es ziemlich eindeutig, dass eine Kategorie mit den Namen 'Münzen der X-Dynastie' on ihrer Semantik aus nicht eine Unterkategorie von 'Kalifen der X-Dynastie' ist, da Münzen ganz klar keine Kalifen sind. Wie Sie schon sagen, die Kategorie 'Kalifen der X-Dynastie' sollte nur ihre Namen enthalten. Da hat die ebenso allgemeine Kategorie 'Münzen der X-Dynastie' nichts verloren. Es handelt sich hier um zwei getrennte Subjekte, dessen Inhalt sich nur durch die Existenz von Kategorien von Münzen der einzelnen Kalifen überschneidet. Aber genau das ist doch die Lösung, und ich verstehe ehrlich gesagt nicht, warum man 'Kalifen der X-Dynastie' bei 'Münzen der X-Dynastie' überhaupt braucht, wenn die jeweiligen Monarchen und ihre Münzen eben einzeln kategorisiert sind, wie Sie es ja schon (sehr lobenswert!) weitgehend umgesetzt haben. Eine Kategorie wie Category:Coins of Al-Mansur bi-Nasr Allah‎ ist schon bestens kategorisiert!

Drittens, 'Kings on coins' betrifft ganz klar Könige, die auf ihren Münzen porträtiert werden (Commons ist schließlich ein Verzeichnis von meist visuellen Medien), was auch aus den übergeordnetek kategorien 'Reliefs of kings' und 'Kings in art by medium' hervorgeht. Das ist was ganz anderes zu 'Coins by king name', wie Sie meinen. Da muss man bei islamischen Münzen sehr sehr vorsichtig sein, da sie meist anikonisch sind, d.h., es sind auf diesen Münzen keine Könige zu sehen. Und auch dort, wo Kalifen z.B. in Imitation persischer Motive Figuren in ihren Münzen haben, dann sind das keine Porträts der Kalifen, sondern eben von früheren Perserkönigen. Wenn wir auch noch bei der Kategorisierung zwischen Königen und Kaisern unterscheiden, dann sind die islamischen Herrscher dort sowieso falsch kategorisiert, denn die meisten islamische Monarchen des Mittelalters führten diese Titel nicht.

Ehrlich gesagt, ich verstehe nicht warum, wenn in einer Kategorie des Caliphs XY die Unterkategorie seiner Münzen besteht (Münzen des Califs XY), warum kann das nicht möglich sein bei der generellen Kategorie der Califen AB dass auch die generelle Kategorie der Münzen der Califen AB sich befinden? Alle wichtigen Herrscher Kategorien sind so organisiert (Päpste, Keiser, Könige, usw) warum Califen nicht auch? In jedem Keiser oder Papst Namen befinden sich die Unterkategorien der Coins, Medals, Portraits, usw. Und die Oberen Kategorien die sie alle enthalten, sind auch so geordnet. Natürlich ist eine Münze keine Person, aber wenn sie mit dieser Person zu tun hat, oder sie sogar darstellt, dann soll sie sich eben dort befinden ! Finden sie das so absurd ? Für die Münzen als Subkategorie der Herrscherkategorie als Ganzes, ist es absurd, eben weil es semantisch Unsinn ist. Das ist nirgendwo der Fall, z.B. Category:Kings of Prussia, Category:Emperors of Russia, Category:Monarchs of Austria, Category:Monarchs of France oder Category:Sultans of the Ottoman Empire um mal einige der prominentesten zu nehmen. Ich sehe kein Unsinn. Wir können dasselbe Schema im kleinen und im grossen anwenden. Da ist die semantik zu keinem nutzen. Anderseits wenn sie die Kategorie überall löschen, dann ist es natürlich nirgendswo der Fall. Aber es macht nichts. Ich gibs auf. Ich werde keine muslimische Münze weiter bearbeiten, noch ordnen, oder kategorisieren. Es macht keinen Sinn. Andere können meine unvollendete Arbeit weiter machen, wenn sie es wollen, sonst bleibt es eben so. Ich habe genug zu tun auf andere Kategorien und Gebiete als mich hier umsonst abzumühen. P.S.: Darf ich ihnen noch einen Rat geben? Commons ist ein Projekt, an dem Tausende von Menschen arbeiten. Man muss immer versuchen mitzuarbeiten und nicht die eigene Ansicht oder Überzeugungen aufzudrängen. In Commons müssen Kategorien nützlich und agil sein. Nützliche Werkzeuge nur nach semantischen oder ideologischen Gesichtspunkten zu zerlegen, macht keinen Sinn noch ist es für das Projekt und die Benutzer zu Nutzen.

Hello Constantine, hope you are good. I have some objection on your last edition of the map, especially the Zenebishi region never expanded too south and towns such as Paramythia never came under his control (I don't know why Pogoni was also painted yellow, there is no evidence that it belonged to Zenebishi). Why the former white areas around Thesprotia, Pogoni become Zenebishi's? The border was so unstable and fragile those years I believe that we should return to the previous version. Hi Alexikoua! I'll gladly make corrections, can you please give me a) the specific changes (which settlements were controlled by whom) and b) sources for them? The white areas were a bit problematic, and I intend to indicate unclear control by blurring the colors on the borders, but haven't found time for it yet.
