Hi Animalparty, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Albion Prints

I have uploaded the file:Boulenger-Fish-of-the-Congo-1899-Hand-Col-Print.-Microthrissa-Royauxi-Nannocharax-Labeo-8-183148-p(ekm)416x312(ekm).jpg ‎from the website www.albion-prints.com. Is this okay? The website says "This is a sold item and has been left in the Public Domain for research purposes. Images are available for public use with an acknowledgement to www.albion-prints.com". I can't find a licence for the image, the original of which was published over 100 years ago. --Quetzal1964 (talk) 11:24, 4 October 2016 (UTC)̴̴̴̴

@Quetzal1964: Hmm, this might be tricky. Copyright rules in Belgium apply 70 years after death of the author/creator. While George Albert Boulenger wrote the 2 volume Matériaux pour la faune du Congo: Poissons nouveaux, the plates were drawn by P. J. Smit and J. Green. P. J. Smit is likely Pierre Jacques Smit, who died in 1960, and thus his works are still under copyright in the original country and cannot be uploaded to Commons, although they may be uploaded to English Wikipedia (see e.g. File:Varanus_salvator.jpg and this deletion discussion. I'm not yet aware of the identity or death date of J. Green, which is needed to ascertain public domain status. (Unfortunately, this means that many or all of the files at Category:Matériaux pour la faune du Congo may need to be removed from Commons). Animalparty (talk) 18:59, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, yes that is tricky and my question seems to have caused a bigger problem than I anticipated. I came across the image while looking for resources on ̣Microthissa royauxi but didn't use it.--Quetzal1964 (talk) 19:45, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Animalparty, I accidentally blocked you while handling a prolific sock-puppeteer. Please accept my apologies for the mistake; I caught and lifted the block immediately and made note of my error in the log. Эlcobbola talk 20:14, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

CC-NC license cannot be uploaded to Commons

Hello. Per Commons:Licensing, any media under CC-NC licenses (non-commercial) is incompatible with Commons. Unfortunately, this means that File:Echimys vieirai-IackXimenes~2005.jpg and File:Echimys chrysurus-IackXimenes~2005.jpg, published under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license, must be deleted. Please check the licenses carefully for future uploads. Cheers, -Animalparty (talk) 00:15, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Animalparty. Thank you for bringing my attention to this point. I focused on Creative Commons Attribution Licenses but I didn't realize that non-commercial ones were incompatible with Commons. All the best, Manudouz (talk) 19:00, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
@Manudouz: No worries! PS, you don't have to (and should not) duplicate conversations: you can reply to the original comment on your Talk page, and use {{Reply}} or {{Ping}} to notify the target user, as I did here to you. Cheers, Animalparty (talk)
Category discussion warning

Histoire Naturelle des Poissons has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Congratulations, Dear license reviewer

If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi Animalparty, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.freenode.net. You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! Jianhui67 TC 16:02, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

Please conisder adding iw-links here on Commons

Dear Animalparty,

Thanks for creating new categories here on Commons as you did recently for Category:Dean Baquet. It would be great if you could as well add the interwiki-link to the corresponding page on en-wikipedia by clicking here on commons in the sidebar menu under 'In Wikipedia' on 'Add links' and then putting in the appearing pop-up box the link to the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. This will add a link to commons to all language versions of the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. Moreover this will avoid the corresponding article to be included in the maintenance category en:Category:Commons category template with no category set.

Many thanks if you could consider to do so, indeed this would reduce my efforts on adding these iw links later through patrolling the pages listed on the pre-mentioned category on en-wikipedia. I would like to thank you for all the great work you are realizing on en-wikipedia and here on commons.

If you have any further questions on this do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards and already now my very best wishes for you for the New Year.Robby (talk) 07:48, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi how are you? I want to use these images. Please review the pictures : 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - End :) If it was hard for you, Dont do it my friend ;) and another thing, this images have "Tasnim" Permission You can see it in the footer. JomaIranگفتگو 10:13, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

@JomaIran: These all look to be created by Tasnim News Agency, and so are appropriately licensed. However, since you did not take the photographs, you should not list yourself as author, and should not use the template {{cc-by-sa-4.0}}. This image is credited to Foad Ashtari for instance, and so File:Mehdi Taremi Iran Uzbekistan.jpg should state "Foad Ashtari" or ""Foad Ashtari/Tasnim News Agency" as Author, not JomaIran. Please double check the authors, and give them credit. Finally, to automatically submit your uploads for review, you can add {{LicenseReview}}, and someone will soon verify the license. Thank you, -Animalparty (talk) 23:54, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

A Question

Dear Animalparty, I found 2 final mushroom species/spores that Commons has no images of. Could you consider reviewing it? Its your decision, of course.

Best Regards from Metro Vancouver, Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:15, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: Sure thing. Would you mind reviewing File:Vadasaurus herzogi by Nobu Tamura.jpg in return? Animalparty (talk) 00:33, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Dear Animalparty ,

If you have time, please kindly review these 3 images.

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:44, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: done. I also reviewed and corrected the Author of File:Inocybe rimosoides 409139.jpg, per source. Looks like Dave W photographed the mushrooms and Linas Kudzma photographed the spores. I don't know much about Mushroom Observer, but that may be something to double check when uploading. Cheers, Animalparty (talk) 00:44, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks. I can always credit both of them in the text. I see you have now done that. Thanks for helping with this Inocbye mushroom project. I'm almost finished with it now. Than I will rest. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:16, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

File listed for deletion

File source is not properly indicated: File:Jamaica First German Presbyterian Church (historical).jpeg not entirely sure if the template to add to the file would be self, as it was cleaned of the reverse print coca cola in photoshop recently, or free lic since the image was from 1906 and freely avail to use....CaptJayRuffins (talk) 00:36, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

@CaptJayRuffins: I see that you've added the Google Books source, which verifies date of publication and public domain status. I went ahead and removed the missing source template. For future uploads, we always need credible documentation of first/early publication (e.g. book, newspaper, magazine), or even where you found the image (e.g. a website hosting an image with info on the image's author, date, provenance, etc.) Beyond establishing public domain status, this publication info also aids researchers and historians. Also, it's best to use {{Information}} to clearly and neatly display date, source, explanatory text, etc. For public domain or otherwise free images that you have modified from the original state (like cleanup, enhancement or retouching) you can add the {{Retouched picture}} template as well, for instance to distinguish original photographer from retoucher, or if there are multiple versions of an image on Commons. Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers! --Animalparty (talk) 02:24, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, I don't actually know how to say this so you won't take offence, but ref#1 indicated the source. There was a reverse bleed thru of the CocaCola on the image and I removed it using photoshop. It was a primary source... But thanks for the usage tags, I can make use of the tl|retouched picture and tl|info tags, I didn't know those before...

File:Katharine_Graham.jpg

Good day. I suggest changing File:Katharine_Graham.jpg from "speedy delete" as you tagged it to a deletion request. Reasons: File has been on Commons for about 9 years, and is currently in use in some 20 Wikimedia projects. Your reasoning for deletion may be solid, but for such widely used image I think it best that there is a discussion on record rather than it disappearing for reasons that people on other projects and non-admins would not be able to see any explanation for after the file is deleted. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 05:05, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:140618-N-PX557-044 (14265686129).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Category:Guillaume Dheulland

I am curious why you moved all the files from Category:Guillaume Dheulland to the new Category:Guillaume d'Heulland, when the BnF [1] has specifically rejected that spelling (found in Benezit)? He himself spelled it Dheulland on this signed engraving, as well as on numerous other signed engravings: e.g., 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. --Robert.Allen (talk) 07:27, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

@Robert.Allen: I may very well be wrong, and if so, worry not, it is fixable. I was merging duplicates on Wikidata and chose what I thought made sense. I made a good faith effort to create a category and before noticing the previously existing one. VIAF indicates just about every conceivable permutation, from "Guillaume Dheulland" to "Guillaume d'Heuland", so you can see how uncertainty can arise. I was actually intending to ask someone fluent in French to look into it, as I don't read or speak French. If Dheulland is the winner, I'll move everything back.--Animalparty (talk) 07:40, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
I would vote for keeping his name Dheulland, per the main French library (the BnF), the signed engravings, and the majority of other identity files at VIAF (listed under "Preferred Forms"). The entry at the Library of Congress follows Benezit, which they cite, but the BnF, also cites Benezit and specifically rejects that spelling of the name. --Robert.Allen (talk) 10:00, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Why do you think Commons has quality control?

It doesn't. They'll keep *anything*, even complete and utter shoite, because of some compulsive image hoarding thing.Tony May (talk) 17:23, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

@Tony May: I'm not sure what exactly you are talking about, or why you asked me. You seem to be upset that other people have uploaded photographs of trains that you dislike. Are you concerned these might detract from the photographs of trains that you've uploaded? Having some redundant or less-than-stellar images is par for the course: we don't have a staff of professional photographers out to document everything on earth. No one is obligated to use any image they don't like. If you can point to a clear example of "utter shoite", and make a solid case for why it qualifies for Commons:Deletion policy, have at it. Personally I find my time is better spent in creating rather than taking away. Cheers, --Animalparty (talk) 18:42, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

See the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 description for more details on the license, and Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia and Commons:Credit line for guidelines on how to reuse material and credit the author: Note that in the case of this image, Wikimedia Commons (this website) is not the original source of the image, it's merely a host to a copy. Thanks for uploading File:K-K-K-Katy - Duke A3702.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Marianne Groß (2013).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".

Thank you!

@BevinKacon: I'm sure this was a generic boiler plate message, but it's unhelpful and impertinent to the issue at hand. While the original image was already deleted, and I don't care if this one is too (the deleting admin should have seen it), the "derivative" is clearly {{Own work}}, and clearly credited to the original author (Norberto1410) and sourced to such with {{Extracted from}}. What more evidence, template, or statements of license would you be seeking? Cheers, --Animalparty (talk) 00:05, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Gould Drexel

Thanks for catching my error with the Gould Drexel image. Do you have an account at Familysearch? Always good to check that the correct is there too. 23:17, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I don't have a Familysearch account, and don't edit any other database besides Wikidata. It's easy to get confused when these aristocratic families (Drexels, Biddles, Goulds, Astors, Vanderbilts, etc.) all recycle the same names with their children! I'm currently trying to sort out the wives of Frank Jay Gould: his first was named Helen Kelly (and her sister was Miss Eugenia Kelly), and his second was Edith Kelly (whose sister was Hetty Kelly!), so captions like "Mr & Mrs Gould and Miss Kelly" are ambiguous. --Animalparty (talk) 23:25, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
You can add a link to Familysearch at Wikidata. If they had a passport between 1914 and 1925 Familysearch will have the passport applications with photos for comparison. We were able to resolve several mixups using them. You can usually fill in missing birth and death dates from the various docs at FS. RAN (talk) 23:44, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Pay attention to copyright
File:Jeffrey Ross July 26, 2009 (5428434535).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: Despite tag on Flickr, unlikely that The Comedy Store has relicensing rights from Mark David/PictureGroup
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

copyright

Hello AnimalParty, Apologies is I shouldn't be writing here! You have marked two images that I have uploaded as possible copyright violations. I have requested those to be deleted because they are not copyright violations. But I have been allowed to freely use them. I have emails from Culture Vannin (the organisation that David Fisher has given these images to) to show that I have permission to use these images freely. I hope this clear it up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CáitChrainn (talk • contribs) 18:12, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

@CáitChrainn: Does Culture Vannin allow anyone to use the images for any purpose, even commercially? Acceptable licenses must allow unrestricted reuse by anyone, not just on Wikipedia or Flickr. When uploading images that you are not the creator of, or that differ from previously published licenses, credible evidence of permission must be forwarded to COM:OTRS: see especially: COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder. Ideally, Culture Vannin or other authorized representative of David Fisher should submit proof of permission. In general, works in the UK are copyrighted for a period of 70 years after the creator's death, unless ownership and copyright was legally transferred to another organization or individual. Culture Vannin would need to declare that they are authorized to redistribute images under new licenses. Additional questions can be posted to Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Cheers, --Animalparty (talk) 18:35, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
@Animalparty: Ah ok, I see what you mean. I'll make sure those David Fisher photos are deleted and re-upload them with the proper credible evidence. Thanks very much for helping! CáitChrainn (talk) 18:40, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Unidentified photographer

Maybe you can identify the one red linked photographer in this montage. I figured out the others. --RAN (talk) 01:50, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I think that is William H. Towles (1871/2-1954), commonly known as Will, who, along with his brother Clarence was active in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, and was president of the Photographers' Society of Pennsylvania in 1915. He was also a photography instructor and authored at least one photography book. He married Miss Bertha J. Evans in 1897. A biographical account is in Who's Who in the Nation's Capital (1921), which gives his birth date as Feb. 9, 1872, in Frostburg, Maryland. --Animalparty (talk) 03:20, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Could you please delete this file, as I uploaded a similar one from Flickr to the Roger Pryor Dodge site.

Waverley123

@Waverley123: : First, please conduct conversations on User talk pages (AKA Discussion pages, like this one), not on User pages themselves. Secondly, please always sign your Talk page comments using four tildes (~~~~), which automatically adds your user name and a time stamp. Regarding File:Man_in_White_Costume.jpg and File:Whitecostume.jpg: You can request a deletion of exact duplicates or scaled down duplicates by editing the file you wish deleted and adding {{Duplicate}} (e.g. {{Duplicate|Larger file.jpg}}. But, more importantly, be aware that not every photo on the internet is posted by the legal copyright holder, and Flickr is notorious for fraudulent license laundering. Generally only the creator or legal owner of rights to an image can decide which license to grant. For media in the public domain (e.g. first published in the U.S. prior to 1925), then appropriate public domain templates should be used, e.g. {{PD-old-70-expired}} or {{PD-US-no notice}}, not misleading and false Creative Commons licenses. All files uploaded that are not your own original creations require sufficient evidence that they are in the public domain or that the copyright owner has released them under a suitable license. For instance, File:RogerPryorDodge-MuraDehn.jpg, there is currently no evidence that the photo is "licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International", and the date, source, and author do not suggest the license is correct, although it may well be public domain due to age if you can provide credible evidence of publication. Examples like this and a number of other seed catalogs in the same collection are PD-US-nonotice or PD-US-not-renewed, but I didn't feel confident changing them en-masse. I am however placing them in the relevant category and tagging with {{Wrong licence}} when I find a PD-USGov tag.

Much appreciated if you could review the category Category: Henry G. Gilbert Nursery and Seed Trade Catalog Collection when you have time, updating the licences appropriately.

Thanks for uploading File:William Sergeant Kendall - Elisabeth Kendall 1987.624.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:William Sergeant Kendall - Elisabeth Kendall 1987.624.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:H4712-L60541001.jpg Pay attention to licensing Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. File:H4712-L60541001.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file description page. Deutsch ∙ English ∙ español ∙ français ∙ polski ∙ português ∙ svenska ∙ മലയാളം ∙ 日本語 ∙ +/−

Please do not claim copyright on images you did not create, and/or that are in the public domain. Scanning or photographing a pre-existing image (like this one) does not grant you new copyright or attribution rights. Always indicate the source and enough evidence to credibly indicate the public domain status or copyright license. ----Animalparty (talk) 22:15, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Animalparty,

The process to upload directly to the Wiki article only allowed me to state that I had the copyright to it. It's about 100 years old and was given to me for my research - I haven't seen anything else like it on the internet. The original copyright holder passed in 1940. That should qualify for public domain I would think.

--Ilikewiki2020 (talk) 16:04, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

I have looked into it more and have changed the license tag accordingly. --Ilikewiki2020 (talk) 22:11, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Animalparty, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Animalparty/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Yours sincerely, (talk) 17:26, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Could you please explain...

You cropped File:Amy_Madigan_(40389212382).jpg. You could have kept the original, and made the cropped version a brand new image. You chose to overwrite the original.

But you didn't say why, in your edit summary, or on File talk:Amy_Madigan_(40389212382).jpg.

Are you responsible for other similar crops? Geo Swan (talk) 05:44, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

@Geo Swan: See Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2019/06#Requesting_a_Large-scale_Courtesy_Deletion_of_Personal_Images_of_Myself and Category:Pending removals to be checked. I may have cropped other images created by the same person, in reasonable and respectful compliance with their wishes. --Animalparty (talk) 05:49, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
  • Thanks. I did find that discussion, on my own, a few minutes ago.
I am going to suggest that either (1) all the affected images should have been explicitly listed at the discussion; (2) or every crop should contain a link to the discussion, in its edit summary. If the images were explicitly listed at the discussion, then those with questions over the images could find the discussion with the "what links here" button.
I think your edits, related to that discussion, not only have to make sense to the other people who participated in that discussion, but they have to make sense to uninvolved third parties, like myself, who review what is left behind, later. Geo Swan (talk) 06:00, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

About public domain images, a question

Thank you Animalparty. If I make a modification to an image in the public domain, here from Wikimedia Commons, and generate a new upload, will its license be the standard license from Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0) or will it enter the public domain too? Mário NET (talk) 18:16, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

@Mário NET: If you make minor modifications to a public domain image (for example, simple crops, slight color adjustment, or simple arrows and labels), then the modified image is still probably in the public domain. If you modify the image so much that it becomes a new creative work (see threshold of originality and derivative works), then you could potentially claim authorship and copyright of the new image (but not the original), and release it under any license of your choice. Public domain means that either the copyright has expired (it was published too long ago), or that the creator/copyright holder has explicitly abandoned copyright. Most Creative Commons licenses still indicate the work is under copyright: the creator retains some control over how the image is reused. If you reuse or modify an image released under a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license, you must attribute the creator, and must indicate if changes have been made (and if modifying a CC-BY-SA image, you must release the modified version under the same or compatible license as the original). This is why the CropTool is so useful: it automatically adds {{Extracted image}}, which indicates the image is modified (cropped) from a larger image. Other templates include {{Retouched picture}} (where you can specify the changes made as well as the editor who made the changes), and {{Derived from}} (useful for more extensive modifications, and/or collages assembled from multiple images). --Animalparty (talk) 02:29, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

ːThanks. I have a lot to study about it. Mário NET (talk) 07:27, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

We need your feedback!

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

I never learned how he did it either, I asked him to show me the tool, but he never responded. I guess he had already left. Very sad for the project. --RAN (talk) 22:45, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
  • Sorry that I am loading the low resolution images from Flickr instead of the LOC ones. The Flickr entry has the crowdsourced context. I wish there was a way to automate adding a link to the Flickr entry, it usually has more accurate date and better identification of the people in the image. Fae missed loading about 1 in 500 of the Bain collection. --RAN (talk) 19:43, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

University and college yearbooks has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

Library of Congress images

Are you taking over from User:Fae the loading of LOC images? I just saw that you are loading the hires images from the LOC website to overwrite my lowres Flickr Commons versions. Thank you! Occasionally I find a few that did not load and are missing, when comparing Flickr Commons to Wikimedia Commons. Flickr Commons has a project to add context and date the images. I was wondering if your process will find those few missing images from the Bain Collection. RAN (talk) 18:22, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): , No, I am not doing anything as methodical as Fae's work. Much more random and piecemeal. If I'm working on an article that has a low resolution LOC image, or notice a category containing several low resolution images, I'll upload full res (and sometimes crops/touch ups). I don't have the programming knowledge or computer power to do what Fae or massive bot uploaders do. --Animalparty (talk) 20:32, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
That was the problem, he never showed anyone how he did it before he retired from the WikiUniverse. I sent him several emails asking if he would make a short YouTube video to show what tools he used, but he never responded, he may have died. Same for my contact at LCCN, he would make changes in their database after I mailed him a list of errors and conflations, then one day he never wrote back, I am assuming he retired, since I never found an obit for him. --RAN (talk) 21:09, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

Digital commonwealth and other GLAM files to Commons upload tool(s)

- [2]

Is there a way to mass upload files (such as the one you uploaded above) from digitalcommonwealth.org or other similar websites. I have used the flickr to commons tool. Is there a similar tool for GLAM websites?

Thank you, --Ooligan (talk) 20:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

@Ooligan: Aside from Flickr2Commons I'm not very handy with mass uploading. Commons:GLAMwiki Toolset and Commons:Pattypan might prove helpful. You can also propose bot assisted mass uploads at Commons:Batch uploading, where the community can evaluate feasibility and determine some best practices (e.g. which template and license to use, how best to transfer metadata, etc.) before implementation. And lastly, anecdotally, it appears that the Boston Public Library Flickr stream adds a needless, more restrictive CC license to public domain media (e.g. here), even though they state "no known copyright restrictions," in what resembles Copyfraud. Requiring attribution, and/or a link to a CC license, is not a requirement for faithful scans of public domain images, especially in the US where "sweat of the brow" doctrine doesn't confer any additional copyright authorship to the person scanning or uploading a work (see {{PD-Scan}} and Commons:Threshold of originality). Cheers, --Animalparty (talk) 22:17, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply.
In "faithful scans of public domain images"- Is a download or screenshot on a PC of a PD-expired image a faithful scan? Or do I need to do I need to use scanner equipment?
Also, can I take a photo of an original PD photo and release for use it as PD? Similarly, Can I take a photo of a PD-expired photo that has been published in a book and release it as PD?
Thanks, --Ooligan (talk) 00:43, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Downloads and screenshots would be faithful replicas, yes, although screenshots are typically of lowered resolution and thus non-optimal (as would photos of photos). Attribution, while not required, is helpful in tracking provenance. DS (talk) 19:53, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

re: Not all of us contribute to commons

Hi Animalparty/Archive 1:

A while ago you responded to my posting at the Village pump]. I just wanted to thank you, and since you said that you would "be very interested in hearing more about how consumers use and view Commons" I wonder if I can answer some of the questions you may have.

I am an editor who contributes content mainly at the English Wikiquote, where images are an important part of that wiki. My difficulty at Commons, most of the time, is to locate images using the commons categories. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me. I visit Commons periodically and will subscribe to this thread.
