Discussions with countries regarding their participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017[edit]

Austria[edit]

We have been in conversations with Philip about Austria's participation. Given that Austria will be organizing WikiDaheim, we would like to use the opportunity and the volunteer resources allocated to that project to potentially make Wiki Loves Monuments happen in the context of WikiDaheim. The communications need to be very clear, and the international team has offered to help the local team with recommendations on jury members if they decide to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments. The current plan is for Philip to get back to the international team about whether this option/offer is appealing and hence, whether Austria will participate in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017. Let's continue the rest of the conversation here. :) --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 20:28, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@LilyOfTheWest: Thanks - yes, we'll participate and start next week with collecting pictures. Sorry for not answering, we've been kind of busy with setting up the new project :-) Best, Philip Kopetzky (talk) 13:44, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Philip Kopetzky: Great, thanks for confirming :) Could you add Austria to the overview attached to this talkpage? You probably know best the details. Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 20:17, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, will do :-) Philip Kopetzky (talk) 12:30, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: It would be great if someone could fulfill this request by Braveheart if we want to start on time ;-) Best, Philip Kopetzky (talk) 14:47, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Philip Kopetzky - glad to see it is resolved. I see that the link on the overview page is still red though, could you help link/redirect that to the right page?
Also, from communications perspective, would it make sense to mention on the landing page that the monument photos automatically participate in WLM? Poland is in a similar situation - with them, we agreed that they could include the WLM logo as 'partner', and tell people that the monument photos automatically participate in WLM, and that from the top-X (X=25), the 10 best monument photos will be submitted as the nominees to the international finale of WLM. Would that type of communication make sense to you too? That would allow you to not have to make a distinction in upload date etc, which would become very complicated for communication. Please let me know if there's anything else should be discussed. Effeietsanders (talk) 13:00, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! The landing page will be a different page, most likely de:Wikipedia:WikiDaheim - the page you mentioned is just the project page :-) We will definitely mention that all monument pictures are in the pool of pictures considered for nomination for the international WLM contest (and the local WikiDaheim contest of course). Best, Philip Kopetzky (talk) 13:31, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that makes sense :) What about linking directly to the WikiDaheim page from the overview? The page linked to doesn't have to be on commons, of course. Effeietsanders (talk) 13:35, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Czech Republic[edit]

@Aktron: it was nice talking with you in WMCON. There are two main items I'd for us to continue our discussions regarding Wiki Loves Monuments 2017.

  • You mentioned that organizing Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 as a photo contest is likely not an option for your community. If there is something the international team can do to change this, please let us know. We would like to help as many countries as possible to participate.
  • You were interested to focus more on the editing component and use the photos that have already been uploaded to improve Wikimedia projects. We discussed that a timeline in October would work better for you. As you may know, there are quite a few countries/initiatives interested in this space. Here are a few pointers for you in case you're not aware of them:

I hope this information is helpful for you. Please ping us if we can help with something, or if you just want to brainstorm. (I'm trying to bring more conversations on wiki, in case others find these conversations useful.:) --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 20:20, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lily, thank you for your interest! As about the whole thing, I still bear it in mind. To your points:
  • I believe there is nothing where we would need some help.
  • Yes, I will get in touch with the National Heritage Institute to talk about this. I already had a discussion in relation to such an event with our board.
  • Thanks for the links, I will study them to see what and how we can do :-) --Aktron (talk) 22:20, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Aktron: Hey, glad to see you around again :) Any update on this topic from your end? We're trying to get a good overview what is going to happen, and where help may be needed. I think you have all capacity in-house to make things happen though, but let us know :) Effeietsanders (talk) 20:53, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Iraq[edit]

@Sarmad Yaseen: it was nice meeting you in WMCON. I'm following up with you to see how we can move forward with helping you and your community organize Wiki Loves Monuments in Iraq this year. Let's start with the lists of monuments. Have you got a chance to look into this further? If not, do you need any of our help? :) As you know, John Cummings can help us through the UNESCO channels to get access to at least some lists of monuments from Iraq if they are available. I'm looking for us to work closely with you to make Wiki Loves Monuments happen in Iraq this year. :) --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 20:24, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sarmad Yaseen: Hope you're doing well :) I'm not sure if you got any further, but if you need any assistance from our end, please do let us know! Maybe John can help, or we can just brainstorm on how things could work out. Effeietsanders (talk) 21:50, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Taiwan[edit]

@Shangkuanlc: It was great to see you in WMCON and thanks for following up over email. I'm moving our conversations to here. This can help others be aware of the state of each country, we can share more experiences and knowledge across countries, and help each other more effectively. :)

I understand that your community has a few other events in October and November 2017 and that makes organizing yet another major event in September hard for you. As a result, the Wiki Loves Earth timing may work better for you all. I also understand that the changes in the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan (which happened in November 2016) are going to have impact on your monuments lists. You referred to some confusions that have already been caused. I have two questions/comments for you:

  • Are any of the events you're organizing in October or November monuments related? :)
  • Even if you decide not to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017, we should address the issues you're referring to. I'd like for someone in the international team to work with someone from your community to fix these issues. This is especially important as we're working on the migration of monuments lists to Wikidata. It also assures that your lists are ready for the next time you want to participate. Are you up helping us with fixing the lists if someone from the international team works with you closely on it? :)

--LilyOfTheWest (talk) 20:41, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@LilyOfTheWest: As for the answer --
  • Are any of the events you're organizing in October or November monuments related?
Yes, Wikipedia Asian may include monument articles in Taiwan if participants are writing articles out of Chinese Wikipedia.
  • Are you up helping us with fixing the lists if someone from the international team works with you closely on it?
Yes, just let me know who I can work with from the international team.
Thank you for all the help :D
--Shangkuanlc (talk) 04:19, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Shangkuanlc: Sorry for the delays! I understand that the government has changed the ID's for the monuments in Taiwan. Sounds like a good idea to check what can be done on the infrastructure side. Did you make any progress in the mean time? Also, for our planning, it would be helpful to know what your current plans are with WLM this year :) Effeietsanders (talk) 21:18, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Iceland[edit]

@Snaevar: Hi, a few months ago, you inticated there's a chance that Iceland might join this year. That would be great as a first time participation! Could you give us an update on where you are, and if there's any way we can help you? Effeietsanders (talk) 11:10, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the ping. I have filled out the typical wlm todo list at is:Wikipedia:WLM 2017/todo. I allready have the full mounument list in an excel file, but my work on wlm has been on ice since I asked for help on the icelandic wikipedia, and no one was interested.--Snaevar (talk) 02:09, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Snaevar: , if you decide to proceed this year, leave a message here, I might help with Iceland (though I am busy till Aug 22). If not, ping me after the contest so that we can properly prepare it for 2018.--Ymblanter (talk) 06:11, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the update, Snaevar. I see you've been working with the 'full package' organization - which is great! You already got quite far. Also glad to hear that you have the list in an excel file, that should help along the process well. Having at least one other person that speaks the language would probably help you organize at least a basic version - then you can scale it up a bit next year. This year, you could focus on having the lists ready, and setting up a basic competition (landing page on Commons/iswiki, clear rules and a one or a few prizes) and of course a jury (which can be done a few weeks later than the rest). Would it help to have a quick call sometime soon to discuss how this can be done most efficiently and brainstorm a bit? I don't know the Icelandic community though, so that part is harder to help with :) (I'm glad to see Ymblanter is willing to help you!) Effeietsanders (talk) 10:31, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Snaevar: I'll also poke around in my private network to see if I can find one or two non-Wikipedians to help you. Effeietsanders (talk) 14:14, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Snaevar: What about setting up a quick hangout call to discuss what's possible, and how? We still got time - but it's slipping away fast :) Effeietsanders (talk) 17:34, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tajikistan[edit]

@VASHGIRD: Hey VASHGIRD! I noticed that several months ago, you expressed an interest for Tajikistan to join this year. That would be great if we could pull it off! Can you share how far you got so far, and how we could possibly help you make this work out? Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 11:13, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Australia[edit]

@Gnangarra: Hey, I was thrilled to see Australia on the list of interested countries this year! I noted that your landing page linked from the overview is still a red link - can you give a bit more insight on where you're at, and let us know if there's a way that we can be of help?

More specifically: you indicate that your monuments are on Wikidata, it would be helpful if you could be a bit more precise in that description (i.e. link it to a query) in case people are interested. Also, were you able to make progress yet on the organizational front? Perhaps an easier way is to have a short chat/call, let me know if you'd like to schedule one. Looking forward to the collaboration, Effeietsanders (talk) 13:07, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Brazil[edit]

@Rodrigo Padula: Good to see Brazil on board again! I note the link is still red, and that the monuments link goes to the 2016 page. It seems no 2017 pages have yet been created. Please do let me know if there's any way we can help - or if it would make sense to have a quick call. Effeietsanders (talk) 21:57, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Croatia[edit]

@Fraxinus: Welcome on board Croatia! Glad to see you as a first time participating country. If that would be helpful to you, I would be more than happy to schedule a call sometime soon, to see how we can help you set up a smooth competition. Effeietsanders (talk) 22:11, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Germany[edit]

@DCB: Thanks for adding Germany as maybe participating, some months ago. I was curious if the organization is far enough to add it to the definitely participating? Would be surprised if Germany wasn't there, of course :) Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 11:16, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Republic of Srpska[edit]

@Effeietsanders: did you see the post on wikimedia-l re the participation? Are you in contact with the organizers or am I? :D --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 15:27, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Saudi Arabia[edit]

The Saudi Arabia will participate for the first time in WLM , how can help to prepare the Upload Wizard for this country --Touzrimounir (talk) 13:18, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Touzrimounir and AhmadElq: : Welcome to Wiki Loves Monuments! Wonderful to see Saudi Arabia on board. The upload wizard will be set up by Romaine in the coming days - it usually takes a few days for him to get to it. Would it be helpful to set up a quick call to discuss and brainstorm a bit further? That way you can ask all you want, and we can get a better picture of what exactly you're planning. Effeietsanders (talk) 17:09, 26 August 2017 (UTC) (member of the international team)[reply]

Countries on hold[edit]

Hi all. There are some countries where the landing page destination is unclear, some information is missing, or the landing page does not explain sufficiently how people can participate. For those countries, we have put the competition 'on hold'. The campaigns will be activated and valid uploads will be accepted, but the banner will not become active until the problems have been resolved. Below we're maintaining an overview of such countries. Non-organizers are warmly invited to help resolve the problems, so that we can get the banners active as soon as possible. Hi Romaine, I have put a link for the landing page in english. All pages in the website have an english translation available through the main menu. -Geraki TLG 14:56, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Geraki: Thank you for the link! In the banner we link to the landing page in Greece. How do people who do not speak Greek know that there is an English page available? Romaine (talk) 15:01, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Romaine, we expected that they would hover over the menu items and find it, but nevertheless I have put an english language icon on top of the sidebar + simple instructions. The main english page has also links to the rest of the pages. I guess it is alright now. -Geraki TLG 15:30, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Geraki: Thank you for solving! Romaine (talk) 16:05, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, I added a landing page in English in our website (linked also in the home page). I already updated the list on Commons. Tell me if it's all right. --Cristian Cenci (WMIT) 17:56, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Map is Out of Date[edit]

Hello, I dare not attempt to update the map myself in fear of compatibility with the map maintainers' process of generating the world map. The world map is missing South Sudan. So it's more than half a decade outdated. How extensively is this map used by Wikimedia Commons? --PasswordDoesNotGoHere (talk) 09:05, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@PasswordDoesNotGoHere: If someone updates the map for that (keeping the tweaks we had to make to make small countries a little more visible), I'd be happy to update accordingly. We have been using iterations of the same map since 2011/2012, so it may indeed be that this has never been updated properly. As we haven't had either Sudan or South Sudan participate, it escaped our attention. Effeietsanders (talk) 09:15, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: That is entirely plausible. I'm looking at a map here ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BlankMap-World6.svg ) as a potential updated source map. Could be an interesting activity to implement. It's a bad time of the day to jump into this right now, may investigate implementation later or tomorrow. PasswordDoesNotGoHere (talk) 09:46, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sure - your help is appreciated. It would be especially good if you could make a proposal in a separate svg file, so that we can compare everything without rush. Effeietsanders (talk) 09:52, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
