Hi, last time a lot of times tried to upload photographs with more then 1 mb. Unfortunately always finished with note that my file was not uploaded. Can somebody explain me what is wrong? Possible we have some new rule which I am not informed? Surprizi (talk) 10:23, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I got this from Internet Archive, which itself is from Google Books. The only copyright information I could find is "NOT_IN_COPYRIGHT" or the IA page. Is this copyrighted? Thank you. --Catonif (talk) 11:13, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

@Catonif: Hi, and welcome. I don't think it is still copyrighted. I believe the appropriate tag from Commons:Copyright tags (and more specifically Commons:Copyright tags/General public domain#Time based automated public domain licenses) is {{PD-scan}} with {{PD-old-100-expired}} as "{{PD-scan|PD-old-100-expired|deathyear=1815}}".   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:09, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

Our account has been blocked due to copyright issues, we want to make an appeal to not lose pictures from the past year which have not been copyrighted. How can we appeal for that?

Our account has been blocked for copyright issues. We own those photos as well. If we can't gain access to the entire collection, can we regain pictures which weren't copyrighted Diptisharma127200 (talk) 07:22, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Your account was created today and only made one edit. About what account are you talking? C.Suthorn (talk) 08:40, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
No not this account. @Shaguftansari1122 is the blocked account. please check it. Diptisharma127200 (talk) 09:19, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
On User talk:Shaguftansari1122 a long list is seen of deleted images. Can you indicate which of these are not copyrighted? And what do you mean with "We own those photos as well." Do you posess the physical prints of the photo's, or are you the owner of the copyright. And what do you mean with "we"? Many questions... Ellywa (talk) 09:37, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Except in extreme circumstances, I leave talk-page access available when I block. If this is the same person as Shaguftansari1122, they can log in as that account to discus recovery of specific files (or general unblocking of the account as the primary one) on its own user talk-page. That avoids confusion, such as we already see here, about what account we are actually talking about and what its edit-history is, and helps keep track of disclosures and who is actually involved in various aspects of this situation. See COM:UNBLOCK. DMacks (talk) 14:39, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Request for vectorization

I'm looking for a person willing to vectorize an image file with the Moravian coat of arms, which is used by many sites: Znak Moravy.jpg. The bitmap format is an obstacle to its wider use on the grounds that the SVG format is better (technically). The existing Moravia.svg file used by other articles as SVG is not suitable from the aesthetic point of view (the shape of the Moravian eagle's tail is not adapted to the shield). It is possible that more people would be willing and able to do it, but in the end at least one willing person could answer the call and do the vectorization.--Pavel Fric (talk) 14:43, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

I noticed that you've uploaded this file with Creative Commons license as „your own work“. I'm pretty sure that {{PD-CzechGov}} applies in this case. Anyway, I'm adding it to my to-do list, it should be relatively easy to do. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:46, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

unblock account

Hi, I have created accounts and been blocked. How to unblock my account or my IP address. Kindly help.

Thank you 2001:FD8:339F:CFB8:A4E8:6A44:D275:B913 03:17, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Your IP address (at least not the one you used to post the above) isn't blocked because you wouldn't have been able to post a question here at the Help Desk if it was. You're going to need to provide the name of the account that was blocked in order for a Commons administraton to check the account and see why it was blocked. Please take a look at COM:UNBLOCK for more details. Now, if the account in question isn't a Commons account but rather some other account (e.g. an English Wikipedia account), then a Commons administrator won't really be able to help you. You will need to go to whichever WMF site your account is for and ask for assistance there. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:11, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

DuplicateLPA bot

Is it possible that File:Through the leaves, 1919 - DPLA - 7b7fbe54066659f73cb4eb631d6f3357 (page 371).jpg and File:Through the leaves, 1919 - DPLA - 67d305fa5841e09ca66e5e1e6306f72d (page 371).jpg and 25390 more files uploaded by the DuplicateLPA bot are duplicates? @Mdaniels5757: : Thanks, yes, I am looking into it. I think there is an issue with identifiers changing in the source institutions. I just got the first notification of this on my talk page about 2 hours ago. Just to note, neither adding a {{Duplicate}} or even deleting a user's uploads gives them a notification. And I am not an admin so I can't see my bot's own deleted contributions. So please do always alert me if you are seeing an issue! We've done over 3 million file uploads so far at DPLA, and so it's a very small error rate overall, but even with a very tiny error rate, we still expect some occasional issues with such a large scale. Can I upload images with "CC" licensing.

I am trying to upload some images from the listed website, the "CC" permissions it gives advises that content may be shared but credited to the author. https://www.chemicalweaponsresearch.com/munitions/triple_chaser_cs/

AdAstra2009 (talk) 16:45, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

The link at the bottom of that page is to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0, which corresponds with {{Cc-by-4.0}}, so that should be fine for Commons. Make sure you name the author correctly when you upload it, and add a link to the source. There is one thing that worries me, namely that https://www.chemicalweaponsresearch.com/munition_submission/ says "Photos will only be used for research and education purposes." That would be inconsistent with Creative Commons licensing, so if those photos are user-submitted the site may not have the right to license them under a Creative Commons licence. It may be worth getting in touch with the Centre to clarify the copyright status of the photos. --bjh21 (talk) 23:49, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Postage stamps

Is it permitted to upload an image of a postage stamp? The stamp in question can be found here:

Federal Ministry of Finance - Series "Design from Germany" Herbert Lindinger: Stadtbahn Stuttgart (bundesfinanzministerium.de)

(I would like to use this image in an article about the industrial designer Herbert Lindinger). Cheers Cl3phact0 (talk) 17:36, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Please, see Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Germany#Stamps. Ruslik (talk) 20:50, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. The image in question has a CC BY-ND-4.0 attribution on the usage page of the source. The same German Finance Ministry site makes a high-resolution file available (though I only uploaded the low-res version). Cheers Cl3phact0 (talk) 04:48, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
@Cl3phact0: Hi, and welcome. I'm sorry, but the license restriction -ND- (no derivatives) is not usable by itself for Wikimedia Commons. For the reasons, please see Commons:Licensing/Justifications.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 05:18, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks @Jeff G., I took a punt that if the German Ministry that owns the rights encourages use of the image it was ok for WP/WMC. In this case, how does the "ND" clause apply? The image I uploaded is unaltered (I'm not an IP lawyer so this is all way out of my fields of knowledge/expertise—just trying to improve WP articles that are within my scope). I will read the info you shared more carefully, though it looks like I'm going to need to tip-toe into Commons territory very, very cautiously and judiciously. Bit of a minefield for the uninitiated. Cheers Cl3phact0 (talk) 06:19, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
@Cl3phact0 Any image on commons can be altered by anyone (for example by createing a cropped version). Therefore ND-files are not compatible with commons rules. C.Suthorn (talk) 08:50, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
Pity. So much useful knowledge that isn't being made available to users. Is there a workaround for a case like this? Cl3phact0 (talk) 09:00, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
PS: This just doesn't make sense. Anyone could go to the source page, download the file (even the high-res version), modify it and do pretty much anything they want with the image. Why should it not be used to improve a WP article? I'm struggling to "get" the logic here (again, I'm not a lawyer). Cl3phact0 (talk) 09:31, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
The intent on Commons is that we host content that is readily reusable in terms of copyright, including in a commercial environment and including derivative works. There are many other sites on the Internet with different intentions, or which are simply careless about copyright law.
The fact that you easily can manipulate someone else's photo is not much different from the fact that you can easily falsely claim it as your own. If you don't have the appropriate license, and you aren't doing it in a context that the country where you are publishing considers "fair use" or some equivalent, you are liable to a lawsuit and, in some cases, criminal prosecution. Probably for most purposes, use on Commons itself (and Wikipedia) would be consider "fair use" in the U.S., because we exist for educational purposes, but we don't want to put our reusers in a position of getting sued. - Jmabel ! talk 15:05, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
Appreciate your taking the time to explain this. To be sure, the postage stamp image I would like to use (which is not a photo, but a graphic file), that was put on the web by the copyright owner, and in spite of that same copyright owner quite clearly expressing their intent to make the image available for use (CC licence, etc.), does not meet the criteria for use on WMC? (Bear with me, not a lawyer.) Thank you Cl3phact0 (talk) 16:33, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
@Cl3phact0: Perhaps I'm missing something, but the only CC license I see there is CC BY-ND-4.0. As Jeff G. indicated above, we don't accept ND ("no derivative") licenses. Let me know if there is something I'm missing that indicates a license without that condition. - Jmabel ! talk 22:52, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
I don't think so. It's my inexperience on this side of the Wikiverse. "Don't accept" is very clear (just a bit odd to the uninitiated). Please do see comments on the talk page of the article in which the stamp was included (ever so briefly): Talk:Herbert Lindinger - Wikipedia Thanks again Cl3phact0 (talk) 23:38, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

User page advertisement

User:Alexis Lhuillier is blocked indefinitely on the English Wikipedia for spam. Now they've set up their user page on Commons with the same advertisement. Is there a way to nominate someone's user page for deletion or at least remove the promotional content? How would I do this if I can't edit others' user pages? It's not like this on enWP. Thank you. NytharT.C 07:31, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

@Nythar: The user page in question has already been deleted by a Commons administrator named Achim55. For future reference, user pages like this are generally not allowed per COM:CSD#U3 or COM:CSD#G10 and can be tagged for speedy deletion. Before doing such a thing, however, you could post a friendly message on the user's user talk page explaining why the page is a problem and giving the user a chance to cleanup the page. New users who are trying to create Wikipedia articles often mistakenly think the best place to do so is on their user page and they aren't familiar with things like en:WP:USD or en:WP:DRAFTS; in many cases, such users mean no harm and just aren't familiar with Wikipedia's or Common's user page policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:01, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Can I upload a picture created by me but used in other places?

I have created a picture of Bengali's Traditional Dress, but I have used the picture in my personal blog. So can I upload the image to Wikimedia Commons? Oleeveeya (talk) 10:39, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Oleeveeya. If you are the sole copyright holder of the picture (see COM:Own work for more on that) and you want to release it under one of the licenses that Commons accepts (see COM:L for more on that), then you can if you want. Before you do so, however, you might want to take a look at COM:ENFORCE and COM:LRV just to make sure it's something you want to do. The fact that the picture has been previously published online doesn't mean it can't be uploaded to Commons, but it could mean that some type of formal verification will be needed per COM:VRT just to (1) confirm you're the copyright holder and (2) to confirm your COM:CONSENT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:08, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
Given that your user name is clearly a pseudonym and you haven't been active on Commons, you'll really need to send email as described in COM:VRT. You may have to establish your identity to the satisfaction of that team, but they will keep it confidential. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Good morning. I am an educator and I was researching your site recently and wanted to use the map found at the link above. However, when I clicked on the Source link below the map images that are inappropriate were shown. I am not sure why they are included on this site as educators and students use this site for projects. @EliSmith701: That is accurately the source, and Commons is not censored. However, the image is in the public domain, so you can freely reproduce it elsewhere without including that link. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
@EliSmith701: You can use the other, larger version of the same map File:F. L. Güssefeld, Map of North America, 1784.jpg, which is sourced from the Library of Congress [2], a better source. I understand that your note was about the presence of the source link on the other file. Not much can be done about that, because the source must be provided, assuming it was correct at the time of upload, although that particular source link is not really useful, since the map is not at that url anymore and it was probably not the original source anyway, which is not mentioned. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:41, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

Fichier:Weißer Streifen.jpg

File:Weißer Streifen.jpg : This file is incomplete: the image is not displayed. Is it possible to correct it please? Thank you for your help. Contributeur2019 (talk).

@Contributeur2019: Hi, and welcome. File:Weißer Streifen.jpg is just a white stripe, upright as a spacer between two images, 250 × 5,000 pixels (8 KB). It was added to article fr:Clarinette by uploader User:Gisbert K in this edit 07:58, 18 October 2022 (UTC) to provide extra whitespace around (to the left and right of) the visible clarinets in the gallery "Clarinettes avec différents systèmes de clétage" at the top of the section "Les évolutions vers la clarinette moderne". What do you expect it to display, an actual clarinet? You may discuss that addition at fr:Discussion:Clarinette in French or here in your language of choice.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:01, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Jeff,
Okay, now I understand. Your explanation is clear. So there is no need to make a change. Thank you for your help. Contributeur2019 (talk) 10:18, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
@Contributeur2019: You're welcome. For my aesthetics, the addition of white spacers on a gray background looks silly, out of place, and indicative of incomplete files; and so I think they should be removed (I prefer minimalism), but there should be consensus either way. I don't read or write French, so I would be uncomfortable writing on fr:Discussion:Clarinette, but you are welcome to copy my opinion to there.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:28, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I agree with you Jeff, but I prefer not to start a discussion on the French wiki: you know when it starts, but you never know when it ends, even for small things. It's not my specialty. I am very sorry. Thanks again. Contributeur2019 (talk) 11:25, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
@Contributeur2019 and @Jeff G.
I have now added the following to the explanatory text:
"white strip, on edge as a spacer between two images or groups of images or for reasons of the appearance of an article for use as the first and last image of a gallery so that it does not visually fill the entire width of the screen".
A good example of the first alternative can be found here: https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A7%D7%9C%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%98
Here, the strip separates the 3 images on the left from the very wide image on the right for objective reasons.
And look here: https://ast.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarinete
Without the strip, the picture with the reclining clarinet would be much too close to the infobox.
So this file is usefull (for my editions of pictures). Gisbert K (talk) 11:50, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
@Gisbert K: I understand the use of the stripes in the two additional examples but not in the case at the origin of the discussion (in fr:Clarinette), where they seem to look bad in the presentation. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:38, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
-- Asclepias (talk) 12:38, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
I have now in the French Clarinet article under "Clarinettes avec différents systèmes de clétage" removed the two strips. As a result, the gallery has expanded to the right and left and now occupies the full width of the available screen. Do you think this looks better than before? Gisbert K (talk) 13:50, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it looks better. Thank you. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:01, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

On their website, they list details of the painting with the following: "Copyright - Public Domain." http://collection.imamuseum.org/artwork/81372/ I would like to add a JPEG of this painting to the Wikipedia article Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange. Does the museum website with its Public Domain listing mean I can upload and use on the Wikipedia article? Do I need more permission from them? Any guidance much appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Ken Draut, author and frequent donor. KenDraut (talk) 22:00, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

@KenDraut: You can upload the image to Commons if the work is in the public domain in the United States and in France. However, the website does not explain why their notice mentions public domain for a work by an artist of France who died in 1958, considering that normally such work would not yet be in the public domain by the simple passage of time. That's a difficulty. It leaves the reader guessing if there's a possible rationale or if it's a mistake. They say that the painting was bequeathed to the Museum in 1979, but that's all. One might speculate that if the copyright was also transferred to the museum by the copyright owner and if the museum released the work into the public domain, then that may be a possible rationale. If that's the case, they could have said it more clearly. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:51, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
I don't see how we could accept that before 2029 without a free license explicitly granted by the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 02:31, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
@KenDraut: You could contact the museum and ask them if they can clarify the matter. What is the precise rationale for the public domain mention about this work? The notice on the Newfields website seems to say that the Indianapolis Museum of Art acquired the physical object in 1979 through the will of a collector who had bought the object at an art gallery in 1961. Did the museum contractually acquire the copyright from the owner of the copyright (who in 1979 was possibly Ginette Signac, the daughter of the artist, and that might be why they mention her in the notice)? If the museum did acquire the copyright, can the public domain mention on the notice of the work on the Newfields website be understood as a reference to the existence of a formal declaration of release of this work in the public domain by the competent body of the Indianapolis Museum of Art? If so, in what year was that decision of release made? There is contact information for the Legal Affairs & Intellectual Property Department of Newfiels near the bottom of the page Terms of use. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:46, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Funny appearance of {{hp}}

I do not know by whom the changes are made, seems to be "Gadget-markAdmins.js" that now the user special rights are automatically displayed with a user entry link. When I use {{Hp}} instead of {{Ping}}, the user's name is kept invisible; but now the rights are shown (without the name).
The hidden ping for an admin will show e.g. (IA O S).
When hiding is requested, IMHO it should be completely hidden. --Sarang (T) (talk) 17:29, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

What is the easiest way to convert MP3 to MP4 K.Mohanalingam (talk) 10:35, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Depending on the size of the file, you can do this online: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=convert+mp3+to+mp4&atb=v350-3__&ia=web. To do so offline, I would recommend Handbrake, but I'm not very media savvy, so I don't know that it's the easiest option. It's also not clear to me why you would want to do this. —Justin (koavf)TCM 10:39, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
mp3 is an audio format. mp4 is a video format. You can create a mp4 file with audio and no video. you cannot upload mp4 to commons. you can upload mp3 to commons. C.Suthorn (talk) 16:16, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
@K.Mohanalingam: Hi, and welcome. I noticed that you want to upload an mp3 file. You do not yet have right to do so. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:06, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

I've made a mess, and renaming some files would unmess.

The files involved are

1) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Electricity.NZ.TiwaiPoint.png
2) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Electricity.NZ.TiwaiPoint2000onwards.png
3) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eectricity.NZ.TiwaiPoint.2020.Onwards.png

These are all plots of data, for different time spans. The first is for the full time span. The second should be Electricity.NZ.TiwaiPoint.2000.Onwards.png which would be the same pattern as 3), except that I omitted the l for that. Sigh. Although I created each file, I can't rename them... They are referenced in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiwai_Point_Aluminium_Smelter Sorry about this. NickyMcLean (talk) 09:20, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

@NickyMcLean: I've renamed those two files. For future reference, you can request renaming of a file either using the "Move" option on the "More" menu or by adding the {{Rename}} template to its description. See Commons:File renaming for more information (probably more than you wanted). --bjh21 (talk) 11:38, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I forgot about the *nix style of "move" instead of "rename" and so didn't see it. I suppose that if anyone could rename any file at any time, a mess would be easy to make. Some systems don't allow names such as A and A.B to co-exist, others dislike parts starting with a digit. Hi ho. How about some leeway for the original uploader? Especially within a short time of the upload, since so often, mistakes are seen after the upload. I shall try to do better... Thanks. NickyMcLean (talk) 05:24, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

GLORIA LASSO

Personal photos of myself, a celebrity

Hello, I am National Santa, Tim Connaghan and in addition to being the Santa for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation, I also am the official Santa for the Hollywood Christmas Parade, and in my 50+ years as a Santa I have presided over many national tree lighting events, White House events, concerts at Madison Square Gardens and appeared in many television shows, news shows and in motion pictures. I would like to post some of my photos to the Parade listing and eventually have my own wikipedia page. Whenever I enter the parade site it shows another Santa who has never been associated with the parade. My web site is www.nationalsanta.com National Santa (talk) 17:42, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Note that copyright on photographs usually belongs to the photographer who took the photo (or sometimes the company for whom they work if such is the contract), not to the person shown in them. See Commons:Licensing. If you are also a photographer who has taken photos at significant events (see Commons:Scope), you are welcome to upload photos you've taken under free license. Photos taken by anyone else need explicit licensing permission from the photographer/copyright holder (see COM:VRT). Hope this helps! Adding Photo

Hello, I'm trying to add a photo from wikipedia in my article that I am editing. I found a really good one but the image has words in a different language. Am I able to write over the image to translate the text ? How do I properly cite that change and then the original author ? Abri.paez! (talk) 16:57, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

You can open a SVG file with any text editor and replace the text string with a text in any other language. Then upload the file with a different name and add the derivative work template to the file description. C.Suthorn (talk) 21:45, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
As for how to cite, it is going to depend on the license. It would help a lot if you would indicate what image you are talking about instead of leaving this as an abstract question that may have a variety of answers. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Are modern photographs of old fresco art made before copyright allowed to be uploaded?

If there is a modern photograph only containing within its visuals an old fresco artwork, is the copyright still held by the photographer (and therefore, unable to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons) or is it considered public domain because the fresco was made before copyright existed? Confused about this. ThethPunjabi (talk) 08:01, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi ThethPunjabi. I'm not sure what you mean by is it considered public domain because the fresco was made before copyright existed, but perhaps you mean the frescos are en:Antiquities. If the frescos are so old that they either were never considered protected by copyright or are no longer considered to be protected by copyright, then you can upload photos of them as explained in COM:PD-ART as long as the photos themselves are not separately protected by copyright. Whether such a photo is eligible for copyright protection in its own right independently of the fresco depends upon the copyright laws of the country in which it was taken and whether it is a slavish reproduction. For copyright eligible photos, you can upload them as long as they're your COM:Own work and you agree to give you COM:CONSENT. If, however, the photos were taken by someone else, you wouldn't be able to upload them to Commons without that person's CONSENT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:38, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your response. ThethPunjabi (talk) 23:12, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Hidden behind a link in the preceding remark: this will also depend on how textured the frescoes may be. The more they get into the realm of the the three-dimensional, the harder it is to make a "slavish reproduction". - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

New Zealand photograph taken 1914's copyright status.

This is probably an open and shut case, but I just want to confirm. So, long story short, there's a photograph of a guy who's Wikipedia article I'm working on at;

natlib.govt.nz/records/22899471?search%5Bi%5D%5Bname_authority_id%5D=-136710&search%5Bpath%5D=items

It was taken in 1914 by Joseph Zachariah (born 1867 died 1966.). Under New Zealand laws it's copyright has expired, as it's just 50 years after author's death, but in the U.S., it's 70 years post author death, which seemingly invalidates it. I'm pretty sure I can't upload the photograph, just want to be sure.

Anyone speak Hebrew?

The English caption for File:Arie Barnea.jpg is "POV: you've been a good boy therefore Barnea is happy". Unless it's some sort of catchphrase or inside joke (which seems unlikely because this person is a Holocaust researcher), it's probably not appropriate. I checked the page history and this is what it was originally uploaded as, so there is no good version to revert to. There is a Hebrew caption that Google translates as "In the above photo: the cute Barnea before the shocking incident at Be'er Tovia". Perhaps someone speaks Hebrew and can correct both captions? --B (talk) 20:49, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

Requests going unanswered

@Helper201: Posting on the creator's talk page was probably the best thing to try first. Although they have no obligation to reply to requests, the absence of reply makes it more difficult to decide what else to do. But here's something you can do, if you want: You can post a request to the wikigraphists on the page Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop. It's probably best to request the creation of new maps with different file names (i.e. not overwriting the existing versions). It would be a good idea to include precise suggestions of the new colours you would find appropriate. Otherwise, people might not be able to guess what colours work for you. Note that there's no guarantee that a volonteer wikigraphist will accept to do the work. If new maps are made, then you will probably want to insert them in the Wikipedia articles and leave comments there explaining your edits. Or you can seek consensus there before making the edits. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:01, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

How can I be able to log into my account yet not have a user page? Pwendler (talk) 01:56, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Pwendler. User pages aren't automatically created when you sign up for an account. You actually need to create them yourself, and it's entirely optional. If you would like to create one, you can and you can find some very general guidance on how to do so at Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories#User pages. It's important to remember, however, that you userpage is sort of a page provided to you as a courtesy by Commons. You have a lot of leeway over the type of user page you can create, but you still need to make sure it complies with basic Commons policy. Image Annotator

Hi all, I have been trying to find out how I can use the immageannotator but was not successful. I am uploading several images of mountains and could use it rather well. Please help me, thanks. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 23:18, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Does this count as uploadable?

I created a SVG of a image of a Reddit bot I found online using w:Inkscape, but can I upload it onto here? It appeared in a Google search and I haven't got any permission from the author of the image but it is used all over the internet. Annoymous editor (talk) 06:50, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Annoymous editor. Being used all over the internet doesn't necessary mean something is free from copyright protection, and that is likely what's going to determine whether the image you created can be uploaded to Commons as explained in COM:NETCOPYVIO. Creating an copy of someone else's work doesn't automatically make the original work "copyright free" per COM:2D copying. It's possible that a new copyright might created for your SVG per COM:SVG#Copyright, but the copyright status of the original work it's based on would still need to be considered per COM:DW. Are you able to track down the en:provenance of the original image? For example, if you can figure out when it first appeared online, then that might help figure out who created it and where they were when they created it since such information can be helpful in assessing copyright status. Are you able to provide a link to a website which shows the image? If you can do that, then it might be possible to access whether the image is too simple to be eligible for copyright protection. Simply based upon what you posted above, it's hard to say anything other than "No, you shouldn't upload this to Commons" per COM:PCP. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:37, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
File:Reddit Classic Snoo.svg is probably copyrighted. It is not a simple logo and it is far more recent then 120 years. Annoymous editor please read the welcome information on your talk page before uploading more images. Ellywa (talk) 07:42, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi again Annoymous editor. If the Classic Snoo is the file you're asking about, then I agree with the assessment given by Ellywa and suggest you tag the file for speedy deletion per COM:CSD#G7 asap since the original image is likely copyrighted and can't be kept by Commons without it's creator's COM:CONSENT. For your reference, the "120 years" mentioned above by Ellywa is a reference to the copyright status of anonymous works seen on COM:HIRTLE. There's no way this image was created a 120 years ago; so, even if truly anonymoous, it wouldn't be within the public domain simply because it's anonymous. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:53, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
https://www.redditinc.com/assets/press-resources/reddit_brand_guidelines_20180314.pdf (here, page 11, states that the image can be used but only for historical purposes. But the image has no license suitable that I can select, just guidelines from Reddit Inc. Annoymous editor (talk) 08:22, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Since the file was tagged as a copyright violation and then subsequently deleted as such, perhaps there's nothing more to discuss here. However, I just want to point that licensing information for the Reddit site you linked to above can be found on page 17 of that pdf, and I see nothing there that would indicate any images found in that pdf would be OK to upload to Commons under any type of acceptable free license. Whenever you see expressions like "protected by copyright", "limited", "nonexclusive", "nontransferable", or "soley for that use" being used on a licensing page, there are probably licensing restrictions involved that are most likely too restrictive for Commons purposes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:13, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the help User:Marchjuly Annoymous editor (talk) 20:43, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

What happened to the file viewer?

Because I have been busy on Wikipedia, it has been quite a long time since I viewed multiple images at their full original sizes and something has definitely changed with how they appear. Take two of the Featured satellite photos I uploaded for examples. After I clicked on "Original File" on the file description pages, the result has the image already zoomed in to a certain extent and after I clicked on the image, it is zoomed in to the point where it is quite blurry compared to the original on NASA's website. The same goes for this photo and its NASA original. I am sure that it was not like this the last time I made a major contribution which was around a year ago. If the filter targeted "signs" as erroneously purported, I would agree. It, however, does not. I've stopped the filter from disallowing edits to examine possible changes, but do not expect that to be likely. No filter is without collateral (257 is far better than 153, for example) and we have to evaluate and balance intended impediments to LTAs with unintended inconveniences to good faith users. As a contributing factor here: just as election, but prerogative, not to register an account prohibits uploading images, it engenders other limitations that are effectively self-inflicted. Эlcobbola talk 15:39, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
Perhaps you forgot to login. Logging in is required before uploading here, please do that. There are also many other reasons to create an account and log in. Also, if you already have an account, what is your account name? Once you are logged in, you may be able to bypass that filter, which targets an individual obsessed with road signs.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:20, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Upload map

Hello, in our new article "Wirkungskontrolle Biotopschutz Schweiz", I wanted to upload a picture of a map that I generated in GIS with points showing the biotopes of national importance in Switzerland that we investigated. This did not work as it is not recognized as picture. Could you please help uploading this? I have seen that in a similar article of the "Biodiversitätsmonitoring Schweiz" a similar map was used showing the monitoring grid. I could also send you the file for checking its suitability. Thank you! Steffen Boch (talk) 10:21, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

I assume your picture is a vector image. Commons accepts vector graphics in SVG format. So convert your picture to SVG and it will work. C.Suthorn (talk) 14:55, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

You cannot do this as we do not accept fair use files. Please see COMM:LICENSE and let us know if you have any questions. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:57, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi Wu Bai X Tong Nian. Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type as explained in COM:FAIR; so, you couldn't upload such a screenshot unless the original livestream was released under an acceptable free license as explained in COM:SCREENSHOT. Some of the local Wikipedia projects (see meta:Non-free content for more details) do allow fair-use content to be uploaded, but each project's different and might have different policies and guidelines that need to be satisfied. So, if you want to use the screenshot in some local project Wikipedia article, you will need figure out what the relevant policies and guidelines are for that project, and then upload the screenshot locally to that project for use only on that project. Information about uploading fair use content to English Wikipedia can be found here and other language Wikipedia's probably have similar pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:07, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Historical Photos

I have historical photos from the 1960s I would like to add to an article on the "Sasin Spraymaster" aircraft. The article (written by someone else) has no photos. I attempted to load them but was stopped because I did not take them myself. These photos were passed to me by someone in Australia, and the original photographer is unknown. How can I upload them? BlueChippy (talk) 14:02, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

  • @BlueChippy: You can't upload them to Commons. Photos from Australia in the 1960s would certainly still be in copyright, and if you don't know who took them you have no hope of tracking down the copyright-holder. They are effectively "orphaned". - Jmabel ! talk 21:00, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Thank you but I am still unclear. I have no knowledge about obtaining a copyright license, or which are valid/applicable. It seems often the criteria are vague and/or conflicting too. What would using the "Italy-MiBAC-disclaimer" copyright tag actually entail doing/facing?
The license:
{{Italy-MiBAC-disclaimer}} Ἀηνόβαρβος (talk) 14:24, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
This is not a license. It's a "disclaimer" that can be added to a description page, to inform potential external reusers that, even if a file is free and freely reusable in most contexts, restrictions may exist for some particular reuses in some contexts, in this case if someone reuses an image in Italy. It could be added to the page of a free image of, for example, an old statue in Italy. Your file is not free and can't be uploaded to Wikimedia, unless you obtain a free license for the photo, so for now this template is beyond the scope of your initial question. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:33, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
The bronze artwork (the work of the sculptor) is in the public domain but the recent photo (the work of the photographer) is not in the public domain by age because the photographer is living and the photo is not otherwise freely usable because the owner of its copyright does not offer it under a free license. You could not use this photo as fair use if what you illustrate or comment is the sculpture. Fair use makes sense only with respect to a copyrighted work. The sculpture is public domain, so fair use is irrelevant to it. The copyrighted work here is the photo, the work of the photographer. Fair use of a copyrighted non-free work must be justified in relation to the copyrighted work, which here is the work of the photographer. A copyrighted non-free photo could be used as fair use in the context of, for example, a critical commentary about the artistic merits of that photo. For example, how the photographer used the framing, the light, etc. Or as an illustration of the photographic work of the photographer in a commentary about the career of the photographer. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:33, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
I believe I may have found an alternative - could an admin please verify is this image is now appropriate?:

Furthermore, could the old one be deleted now please:

How can I upload an image that is not my work? BTSTOP10 (talk) 18:59, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

@BTSTOP10: Typically, you can't (or oughtn't). The only exceptions are:
  1. work that for one or another reason is in the public domain.
  2. work for which an appropriate free license has already been granted (in which case you need to link the page that clarifies the license information).
  3. work where you are in touch with the copyright-holder, and they are willing to go through the process described at COM:VRT to grant an appropriate free license.

Most images on the Internet do not belong on Commons.

Copyright help regarding File:HMS Redstart (M62).jpg

The photograph was likely taken sometime between 1938 and 1941. It's not clear who took the photograph or who owns the rights to it, but a photograph of its sister ship (HMS Ringdove, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HMS_Ringdove_FL18078.jpg) was published under the IWM Non-Commercial Licence. It is therefore highly likely that this photograph falls under a similar licence, was created by a Royal Navy official photographer and is therefore in the public domain.

Does Template:GODL-India applies in the pictures or contents at Raj Bhawan, Kolkata official website? I want to upload pictures on this website with the license above. DRC-B5 (talk) 14:08, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

If not then under which license I should give? DRC-B5 (talk) 14:15, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
Their copyright policy states: " The contents, images, text, documents etc. featured on this site may be reproduced free of charge without requiring specific permission. This is subject to the data being reproduced accurately and not being used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context. Wherever the data is being published or issued to others, the source must be prominently acknowledged. However, the permission to reproduce this data does not extend to any data on this site, which is explicitly identified as being the copyright of a third party. Authorization to reproduce such data must be obtained from the copyright holders concerned." I find that confusing as to whether derivatives are allowed, which we require.
Pinging @Clindberg you are a lot more expert than I. Any thoughts here? - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
FWIW, my reading is that their policy is saying "you can use any of our files, images, etc freely but you may not use the files, images, etc of third parties that we have used on our site unless their owners have said you can". So anyone plundering the site on behalf of Commons must check the provenance of each file: if it is a rajbhavankolkata.nic.in-originated file, fill your swag bag; if it was originated by anyone else and merely hosted on rajbhavankolkata.nic.in, then you must check the small print. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:26, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
You can't use GODL-India unless that license is explicitly mentioned. We unfortunately have many many files labeled GODL-India which shouldn't; for a while it was assumed that was a wide-ranging license but someone showed that things must actually be labeled that way, and outside of data.gov.in nobody really does. It's likely there isn't a single image which is truly licensed that way. However, we have accepted wording like the above as a free license -- esee {{Indian Army}}, although someone changed that tag to read more like a CC license and take away the actual license wording. The language in the license can make people think that derivative works are restricted (see Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Indian Army, where I argued that the restrictions are simply those of moral rights which always exist), so even though we kept that one, similar ones may keep getting nominated for deletion. In general though, we may need a template for each website which has a license statement like that; I think the template at User:Ravensfire/Goa-Govt is probably a good one (which was not made an actual tag just yet). As mentioned above, any third-party material would not come under that license of course. Carl Lindberg (talk) 13:52, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

Any potential legal issues with uploading your own photos from museums ?

Concerning history museums, including historic house museums, open-air museums, archaeological museums and the like, are there any copyright restrictions for uploading certain photos ? For example, do I need to first seek permission from a museum to upload my own photo of one of their permanent exhibitions or temporary exhibitions ? How does this affect photos of former permanent exhibitions that have been reworked, moved or replaced by a particular museum (and is thus different from the newer version of the exhibit or some similar replacement exhibition) ? I am asking just to be on the safe side when it comes to uploading and publicly sharing photos from various museums, especially historical, archaeological and natural history museums ? Can't find anything on how to close/delete my account. Any suggestions on how to do this? Dcexplores (talk) 23:32, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

Accounts cannot be deleted once created on a Wikimedia project. You could ask that your account to be globally locked by a steward, but this is something that they generally will not do because it’s not in the scope of m:global locks. If they do perform a lock on your account due to your own request, it would normally be on the grounds that you cannot create another for sockpuppetry. Screenshots from Google Chrome

Google Chrome is free software but I'm concerned that my screenshot maybe taken down. They don't license Chrome properly and the photo is of a graphic that displays when you get 'Aw, Snap!'. Annoymous editor (talk) 06:28, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Annoymous editor Google Chrome might be "free software" in the sense that it's free to download, but I don't think it's "free software" in the sense that it's free from copyright protection. So, any COM:SCREENSHOT you take of it could contain copyright protected content and you wouldn't be able to upload such a file to Commons without Google's COM:CONSENT. Moveover, even if Chrome was free software not protected by copyright, you couldn't use it to upload any screenshots of websites or other copyright-protected content created by someone other than Google. The use of "free" can be confusing sometimes so you might want to take a look at en:Gratis versus libre because on Commons "free" has a very specific meaning that differs from how the word is often used out in the real world. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:14, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

  • @CarmenScheibenbogen: When you say "I do own the picture": owning a physical copy of the picture is not the issue, the question is whether you own the intellectual property rights. If it's a picture you took yourself, that's fine. I raise this only because it's odd that you say you own the picture, but not that you took the picture.
  • Probably you got caught on some limitation about uploading small pictures without EXIF info in a cross-wiki upload; such pictures are usually (but not always) copyright violations, taken from online. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. @CarmenScheibenbogen: Does the website indicate a license for the photo? And does she even own the copyright for the photo (which typically would belong to the photographer not the subject of the photo)? We often have problems with notable people passing on photos of themselves for which they don't actually own the rights, or where they don't really understand that they are issuing an irrevocable license that allows reuse, derivative works, etc.
If there is an explicit license on a site or page that is clearly under the control of the copyright-holder, then all you need to do is cite that page and use that license. Otherwise, we need the copyright-holder to go through the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Where to request all files in category to be renamed

Hello! AFter removing some info that was unsupported by the source on Midnights on enWiki, I noticed that an image there (currently at File:Taylor Swift 2022.jpg) had a nonsensical name. I've since requested it to be renamed per criterion 2, however upon clicking on a category (Category:Haim - The O2, 21 July 2022) on the image, I discovered that all the files in that category need to be renamed per criterion 2 as they all have nonsensical names. Is there a place where I can request all of these files to be renamed at once(and if so, what should I renamed them to since they can't all have the same name)? Blaze Wolf (talk) 20:37, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

A bot can do this in principle, but can you explain how the names are nonsensical? They seem intelligible to me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:53, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Are nonsensical and intelligible not synonyms? If so my apologies, regardless they still qualify to be renamed under criterion 2 which says "To change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image particularly displays." which is what needs to happen to all the images in that category. Blaze Wolf (talk) 20:56, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
But I can understand what the files are: it's "HAIMO2210722", which is the band HAIM performing at the O2 on 2021-07-22. What do you think the name should be? —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:59, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure, however I was not aware that was what the file meant. To me it just seemed like a bunch of gibberish consisting of a random letter and number combination that's usually the default for a file taken on a camera or phone. Maybe adding spaces would help make it more sense, though I don't think that is a valid reason to rename a file under the criteria for doing so. Because i was unaware that was what it meant I assumed it was "Only information is the photographer or rights holder. The only piece of meaningful information is the name of the photographer or the holder of the copyright." which is part of criterion 2. Blaze Wolf (talk) 21:03, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
If you think it should be "HAIM at the O2 2021-07-22 X.jpg", then I think that's valid. Have you seen this? Commons:File_renaming#Mass_rename. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:06, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Yes I have, but I Didn't know that would be relevant to me since I don't have the file mover permission. Blaze Wolf (talk) 21:10, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
I do have the user right, but I'm hesitant to move them all now. I'm happy to do the work if someone else finds these names nonsensical. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:43, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Pictures from an Exhibit

I have pictures from an exhibit at the Greenwich Royal Maritime Museum that I think would be great to share. The artist of the sculptures in question though is still living. The pictures are my own, but I didn't know if I shared the pictures if I would be infringing on some sort of copyright code. EalasaidRaonaidRaighean (talk) 02:55, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

@EalasaidRaonaidRaighean: Hi, and welcome. If you mean the National Maritime Museum that is a part of Royal Museums Greenwich in Greenwich, east London, UK, then per COM:FOP UK the photos should be allowed here.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:40, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Error message when downloading a file

So I'm trying to download this painting in 8192px: File:Pierre-Denis Martin - View of the Château de Fontainebleau - Google Art Project.jpg

Above the preview picture: Download ---> 8192px ---> this page:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/16/Pierre-Denis_Martin_-_View_of_the_Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Fontainebleau_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg/8192px-Pierre-Denis_Martin_-_View_of_the_Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Fontainebleau_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

The error message is as follow:

Error | Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes. | See the error message at the bottom of this page for more information.

If you report this error to the Wikimedia System Administrators, please include the details below. | Request from 42.115.248.10 via cp5028 cp5028, Varnish XID 3507038 | Upstream caches: cp5028 int | Error: 500, Internal Server Error at Wed, 30 Nov 2022 15:54:16 GMT

Any resolution from "Other resolutions:" (below the preview picture) works just fine. Downloading through Media Viewer works just fine. However, none of these options will let me download in 8192px.

How do I fix this? Thanks. Descartes1637 (talk) 16:11, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

@Descartes1637: Hi, and welcome. That looks like a bug, please see mw:How to report a bug. You may, of course, download the largest we have in 30,000 × 24,867 pixels (195.54 MB) or the tiles, and construct your own 8192px wide version.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:20, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Numbering of JS code

I had been very glad when some years ago somebody (many thanx to the unknown helper!) established line numbering for javascript code - as well in display mode, where a search works, as in edit mode, where searches are not possible (why?). But since some weeks one file shows line numbers only in edit mode, while all my other JS sources show them in both modes. I have no explanation what's strange with that file. If somebody there knows about, I will tell where it happens. It is much more difficult to maintain large files without that option! -- sarang사랑 15:36, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

@Sarang: Link to the page? It's likely a matter of changing the page content model, per Special:ChangeContentModel. —Justin (koavf)TCM 15:39, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
@Koavf: thanx for swift response, the script is User:Sarang/simpleSVGcheck/sandbox.js; neither do I understand your explanation, nor am I allowed to look into Special:ChangeContentModel.
But I am looking forward that help will come! -- sarang사랑 15:48, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
This may help: mw:Content handlers. Basically, this is a way of saying, "This kind of page includes [x] kind of content". This is why MediaWiki will add different kinds of options for how to edit (e.g.) a Lua module versus a data page such as Data:Palmyra Atoll.map. These kind of pages only allow certain kinds of information or edits and they sometimes are validated like code is. —Justin (koavf)TCM 15:52, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanx again; I cannot come further. I just saw that User:Shirayuki seems to be in that topic - maybe he can help me ? -- sarang사랑 17:13, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
How about removing emoticons and html tags or shortening the source code? Shirayuki (talk) 11:32, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Now with that JS all numbers have vanished, they are neither in source view from outside, nor opened in edit mode. It is much more difficult to work this mode ! -- sarang사랑 11:16, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
