Links at upload page broken

It looks like that the links on the upload page Commons:Upload are broken. There used to be a link to Special:Upload on the row which says "it is entirely my own work", but now it literally says:

It is [[[:fullurl:Special:Upload]] entirely my own work]

with the text "Special:Upload" written in plain text instead of being a link. I had to go to Special:Upload manually via the browser address bar, and the upload form I got did not have all the information preloaded. I had to enter "{{own}}" manually as the source and I did not know what to enter as the author.

Is the upload page broken or undergoing some sort of construction? JIP (talk) 01:15, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

What is wikimedia commons welcome talk? ThankGod4wiki (talk) 04:31, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

@ThankGod4wiki: User:Wikimedia Commons Welcome is a bot, a computer program that leaves a welcome message for new users. The talk link is for the user talk page, but with the bot it just redirects to the bot user page. It is the same as your signature above, with your name and your talk page link. Thumbnail for new versions

I've made my first edit; A new version to File:Levels 9–10 Football League areas in England.svg but the thumbnail (at least the en.wikipedia articles I have checked) still shows the old version. I am a noobie here so feel like I have missed something here but I don't know what. JamesLewisBedford01 (talk) 07:27, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi JamesLewisBedford01,
welcome. That's typically a browser-cache problem. Just, clear your cache or close and re-open the browser.
However, the new version which you have uploaded is rather different from the original one. As per our policy COM:OVERWRITE, I've therefore reverted to the original version. I would ask you to re-upload your version under a different (new) filename, so that the original image remains available. The projects, which currently use this image, can then discuss to eventually switch to your newer version. --Túrelio (talk) 07:50, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the help and for pointing me in the right direction. I'll read up on uploading new files and look to do this. JamesLewisBedford01 (talk) 11:16, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

Triyng to share a logo from my company and the industrial property

Hello. I am triyng to introduce my logo company made by me and my industrial property which became famous arround the world. Can you help me? GlueGlue UPF50+ (talk) 22:56, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

@GlueGlue UPF50+: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload pdf and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg images as a new user and Special:AbuseFilter/158 by trying to cross-wiki upload a logo with a self-cc-by-sa license as a new user. For each image, you indicated each is your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:44, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

Amending a Category name

There is an existing category [Category:Camp McKay, Paekakariki]. I seek a name change to: Category:Camps McKay and Russell, Paekākāriki. There are two reasons: (1) the two Camps were close together as shown in the photo in the reference cited below. Many images in the category (such as those of the 70th Anniversary celebrations) will related to both camps, but there are some images that are particular to one or the other. Changing the existing Category name will enable some images to be put into new sub-categories. (2) The recognised name of the town near the former camps is Paekākāriki (spelled with macrons). Here is a citation: [1]. I seek assistance with amending the category name as explained above. Thanks--Marshelec (talk) 19:45, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Uploading Photos given to me

Hello! I have been assigned to write a wikipedia page for an established artist. The article was successfully uploaded, but I am terribly confused over how to get photos up. The artist e-mailed me her choice of photos, including the name of the photographer for credit, but I am unsure how to properly upload them with all the many different copywriting information I am reading about. They are not photos from a website, but from a shared google drive direct from the artist. Brendanlevesque (talk) 22:05, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

@Brendanlevesque: Hi, and welcome. Please have each photographer license their photo(s) (and artist license their recording(s)) on their official website(s) or social media or send permission via VRT with carbon copy(ies) to you. If you can't get compliant license(s), the photo(s) may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. See also en:WP:COI and en:WP:PAID.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:31, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
If any of these depict her artwork, we'll also need VRT correspondence with permission/license from the artist herself. Conversely, if any are simple depictions of a 2-dimensional work of art, for those we will only need the permission/license from the artist herself.
On that permission from the artist: if multiple images are involved that need her permission, it may be simpler for her to give a blanket permission that you will be uploading on her behalf rather than a specific list of photos. Still, she should be specific about the particular license to be used. - Jmabel ! talk 01:05, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Brendanlevesque. Before you do anything else, you should first carefully read through the two English Wikipedia pages Jeff G. linked to above and clarify any connection you may have to Ivakhiv. Stating that you've been "assigned to write" a Wikipedia article about her is giving the strong impression of at least an en:WP:APPARENTCOI. Please be aware that undisclosed paid editing is not allowed per English Wikipedia's Terms of Use, and may lead to your account being blocked by a Wikipedia administrator if not sufficiently addressed. In addition, "being paid" also often includes other forms of non-monetary compensation. The more transparent you're about any connection you may have the less trouble you're likely going to have, and the easier it will be for others to help you. As for uploading photos, English Wikipedia's non-free content use policy is quite restrictive and non-free photos of still-living persons are pretty much never allowed. So, if that's the type of photo you want to upload and use, then you'd be much better off asking Ivakhiv to take either take a selfie or have someone take a new photo of her, and then have her or the other person upload the file to Commons. Generally, it's the person taking a photo, not the person being photographed, who is considered the own the copyirght on the photo. If Ivakhiv takes a selfie, she would be the copyright holder; if someone else takes her photo, that person, in principle, would be the copyright holder. Regardless, Commons is going to need to a way to verify the copyright holder's COM:CONSENT in order for it to keep such a photo. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:17, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Need help tagging images

File:Roundel of East Timor.png and File:East Timor Roundel.png both describe themselves as unofficial roundels, presumably made up by the submitter. However they’re not tagged as such, what template would one use to mark them as unofficial? MRN2electricboogaloo (talk) 14:48, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

@MRN2electricboogaloo Is an unofficial unused roundel even within the scope of this project? Looking at the global edits there was nowhere where this was used. I presumed the roundels that are listed in the categories are official or were used by someone. It seems odd to have a separate "official" categorization so maybe dump them into Category:Unofficial. Getting Credit for Important Movie Posters, Logos, Designs, Paintings I created/ designed/ illustrated in past

I am in my 70s and would like to get credit for some of my Artwork I created during my Artistic career. I recently experienced a situation that made me aware of the importance of establishing a link to my Artistic and Intellectual Rights to my Artwork, Designs, Logos, etc.

  1. ALIENS Movie Poster (1986): I was freelance but working with Mike Salisbury Communications when 20th Century Fox Execs were leaning toward an Aliens vs. Marines action/ shootout but I thought my "Mother vs. Mother"/ Survival of the Species/ Female Rambo' idea would resonate with James Cameron at the minimum. No credit on Wikipedia even though I am credited several times online links
  2. MOTOWN 25 Logo (first aired May 16, 1983, NBC): This is very perplexing to me in that I didn't receive even a tiny credit ANYWHERE. Not on the Program, the top-rated Television Special or the 1 disc DVD. Even the boxed 3-DVD version does NOT credit me anywhere even though my Logo that I created for Suzanne DePasse and Suzanne Coston for Berry Gordy/ MOTWN Productions DOMINATES in packaging and visual presentations. WTF?
  3. POLYGRAM MUSIC Logo: International Music Label I did this working with Mike Salisbury Communications
  4. FOX (Racing) Logo: did this back in the late 70s for $200- $300 for a T-Shirt Design when th y were a small shop on the East Coast. I'm trying to remember the owner's name. I do have witnesses. A long shot. Hoping for a late compensation like NIKE gave their Logo Designer after they went big.

I know you can't put your signature on Logos and Movie Posters (unless you're Drew Struzan) but it does come in handy when trying to provide Authentication (as I recently experienced with Heritage Auctions re_ALIENS)or One's Legacy a an Artist/ Designer/ 'Imagineer'. I am thankful that Wikipedia does offer us Creatives some form of honest verification that will have a chance to be noted or challenged if not 100% True accounts. TERRY LAMB, Makaha, HI 10/05/2022 AlohaTerry7 (talk) 22:27, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi AlohaTerry. If you're trying to get real world credit for work you created or help create, I'm not sure that any one at Commons or Wikipedia can help you. This sounds like something that you might need to discuss with an attorney specializing in copyright or other intellectual property matters. You might also want to look into whether the things you did were considered a en:work for hire type of arrangement. If you were paid to design logos and other stuff, and part of your agreement meant that you gave up any claim of copyright authorship to the person or company who paid you, then you might not be able to receive further compensation for such work. None of the volunteers on Wikipedia or Commons can give really give you any sort of legal advice, which is probably why the thing to do would to be contact someone like an attorney or legal foundation who can. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:40, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Questions About ShareAlike 2.0/4.0 Licenses

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of making a new website and wanted to use some photos of Wrestlers on Wikimedia, all of which are under a Creative Commons ShareAlike License. I've remixed the photos to make them black and white, and also transparent as I plan on using these as part of a player's profile on my website.

Here's an example of the original source image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wheeler_Yuta,_June_2022.jpg

Here's my edited version of the source image: I've distributed these as requested under the terms of the license which states "If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original."

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wheeler_Yuta_Black_%26_White_Render.png

And here's the final player profile example on my website: https://i.postimg.cc/Sx28QHZB/Header-Photo-Template-34-result.png

My question is do I need to distribute just the black and white version of the image to Wikimedia, or do I need to upload the actual player profile with the new background I made to Wikimedia? Someone has put in a request to have these black and white images removed as you can see on the link here so I'm not really sure what the actual process to follow is. I want to make sure I do everything right by the book.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

James Jamster26 (talk) 14:12, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

  • @Jamster26: You don't need to provide us with the new images at all. You just need to provide appropriate credits (license, author, indication that the desaturation and removal of background was your own) where you reuse them, and license your own versions with the same Share Alike license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

@021120x: Can you link to the page which shows the license? If the license is one of those allowed on Commons (what we call a 'free license', e.g. Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses), then it can be uploaded here via Special:UploadWizard (pay special attention to the "Release rights" step) and then included in a Wikipedia article. But this looks like a commercial/media photo, which usually are not freely-licensed. -M.nelson (talk) 23:27, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia says sensationalist claims that are harmful to a living person and which is poorly sourced should be deleted.

When I tried to delete such a poorly sourced information that's harmful it is not allowed. The whole page is being attacked by people who seem to harbor hatred for the subject and when unsuspecting people try to correct it, these seasoned trolls coordinate and gaslight in such a way that the ones who try to correct the wrong are labelled "vandals" and being "disruptive." Please look into this matter. Wikipedia also says you are not allowed to use court documents. They cite only one obscure dharma magazine to make their claims. 2600:1700:A64C:6060:3080:DE93:FE93:CB0F 05:56, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

Sorry for the typo. The league folded in its first and only year 1988, not 1998 as written 31radio (talk) 16:14, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
For 1988 in the U.S, if the score book was published and it had no copyright notice, then it would be {{PD-US-1978-89}} (see Commons:Hirtle chart). Otherwise, whoever created it still owns the copyright, so you are probably out of luck in terms of our rules here on Commons. This is probably one of those unfortunate examples of an "orphaned work". - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

published in 1917 by Sentinel Motor Waggon Works, Shrewsbury, England.
Probably it is now unique. I inherited it from my Grandfather who worked in associated industries at that time. SteamWaggonFan (talk) 18:30, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
    • @SteamWaggonFan: If it was from 1917 in the UK, and was published anonymously (as against a particular then-living author) it should now be in the public domain in both the U.S. and UK, which are the only jurisdictions that would matter here for a UK publication. Use {{PD-UK-unknown}} and {{PD-US-expired}}.
    • A PDF is OK, though it would also be great to have the page-by-page images (probably best as JPEGs) if you are willing to upload those as well. Sounds like this would be a pretty big PDF, so you may end up needing to do a chunked upload, but if you have a fast, reliable Internet connection then the usual upload methods will probably work. Jmabel ! talk 22:01, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I’ll try to upload the 16.8 Mb file in a few days time when I have access to very fast broadband. SteamWaggonFan (talk) 22:06, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

How to create a new category?

Hello, I would like to create some new categories related to trains. How do I do this? Thanks Shawn Teller (talk) 16:51, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

@Shawn Teller: Usually, as a beginner, the easiest way to create a category is:
  • Decide on a category name and what its parent categories will be.
  • Add the new category to one image as if that new category already existed, and save the page for that image. This will create a "red" link to the category page.
  • Click on that link, which will take you to a page that lets you create the category page.
  • Add the appropriate parent categories to the new category, just like you would add them to an image file page.
  • Save and you are done.
Try that for one category and if you have further questions, feel free to continue here. - Jmabel ! talk 17:42, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

@NataliaStaxx23: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png photo as a new user. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:21, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

@Nperpoil: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg logos as a new user. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. The following applies to each logo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png logo will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:11, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
You would want to upload the new logo under a different filename, then change the fr-wiki page (and probably the Wikidata item) to use the new logo. If you don't know how to do those things, come back here & someone can help you.
If the new logo is complicated enough to be copyrightable, you will almost certainly want to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to make it very clear that you are the owner of the intellectual property rights involved, not some third party uploading someone else's copyrighted logo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel and @Jeff G. Thank you for your comments. I am not quite sure how to do those things without losing lots of time since it is quite specific. Basically, I need to upload my logo using an HD document under a different name + providing a licence (number?). @Jmabel, I don't get the fr-wiki change part or the Wikidata item? Should I create a new page? Would it be easier? Could you explain further? Regards

@Nperpoil: You may start by using Special:UploadWizard to upload the new logo with a new filename (not File:Logo-cluizel.png and not in png format). Once you have done that, please let us know what new filename you chose.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:24, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Nperpoi. If you're the copyright holder or the logo, then you can upload it. Wikimedia Commons, howwver, doesn't accept fair use content of any type as explained in COM:FAIR which means you will have to be willing to release the logo as explained in COM:L. In addition, once you upload the logo to Wikimedia Commons, you can't change your mind later on if people start reusing your logo in ways you don't like as explained in COM:LRV. Therefore, my suggestion to you would be to take a close look at the Creative Commons official website since Creative Commons licenses are recognized worldwide and are commonly used by people uploading content to Wikimedia Commons. Creative Commons and Wikimedia Commons have similar names, but they're not otherwise connected. Since Wikimedia Commons only accepts certain types of Creative Commons licenses as explained in COM:CC, you will need avoid anything that places any type of restrictions on commercial or derivative reuse. Since brand logos tend to be a very important items of intellectual property for companies, organizations, individual, etc., you might also want to discuss what it means to upload your work to Wikimedia Commons with someone familiar with French copyright law like an attorney. If you're uploading your logo just so that it can be used on one of various language Wikipedias and nowhere else as well as only in the ways you want it to be used, then don't because that's not how Wikimedia Commons works. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:19, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

@Nperpoil: First we need to work out whether the new logo is or is not complex enough to be copyrightable. Is it just the simple "Cluizel | · Paris ·" at the top of https://www.cluizel.com/fr/ ? If so, this will be pretty simple. If not, could you show us where we can see the logo in question? - Jmabel ! talk 15:06, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, yes, that is the one we are talking about. 185.181.155.115 07:21, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel 185.181.155.115 07:21, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
@Nperpoil: Ah. That is very simple, too simple for copyright to arise. Upload it using {{Textlogo}} and {{Trademarked}} in lieu of a license. If your upload method doesn't let you do those, you can edit the file page immediately after uploading to put those in lieu of a license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel hi thanks for replying. Should I do that directly in the Infobox section? Do you have an example to share? Nperpoil (talk) 08:51, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Removal of Picture because of lack of consent of one of the persons on the picture

Anoushiravan Mohseni has asked me to help him remove the following picture.

https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anoushiravan_Mohseni_and_Norbert_Hofer.jpg

He has never given his consent that this picture was published! How can this be done? Thanks Matthias Fletz1 (talk) 16:48, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

I'd guess it is simplest to nominate File:Anoushiravan_Mohseni_and_Norbert_Hofer.jpg for deletion on the basis of a requested courtesy deletion. Point out that we already have plenty of pictures of both of these people and it isn't in use in any of our projects, that probably will be granted. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

  • Other than Wikipedias this image doesn't exist anywhere else so it's presumed the uploader is the photographer, Also what Anoushiravan Mohseni wants is entirely irrelevant - A satisfactory-quality image exists of these 2 gentlemen so there would be no valid reason for deletion as both men are notable and have categories after them. –Davey2010Talk 22:19, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

Correction please

I misspelled the title of Complaiunt sign.jpg. I am unable to determine how to correct this matter. Should someone know how to do this, please do so. Most kind regards, Hu Nhu (talk) 00:00, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Hu Nhu. The name of a file can be changed by making a move request as explained in COM:RENAME; however, there is also possibly a more important matter to resolve first. While it's true that you would be copyright holder of the photo if you took the photo yourself, you're not necessarily the copyright holder of the photographed sign as explained in COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs. Individual words are not eligible for copyright protection as "words", but when they're combined together with other words to express a certain creative thought, the combination is what is eligible for copyright protection. If that's the case with File:Complaiunt sign.jpg, then your photo would be considered a derivative work which means not only the copyright of the photo but also the copyright of the sign needs to be considered. So, unless it can be shown that the sign is either (1) not eligible for copyright protection or (2) released under a free license by its copyright holder, I don't think Commons can keep this file. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:44, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Help needed for labeling correct copyright info for a derivative work

I want to properly label the copyright info on the "Anatole van Assche.jpg", but I'm getting confused by the ton of templates...

The data:

(I took the actual picture - that part is easy.)

The picture shows a photograph made in 1924. That date is documented on the picture frame and is clearly visible in my own photograph.

I'm being asked for "... the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar.". The true - but not publicly verifiable - answer is "it hangs on my wall". :-)

The original was "released" (in only 1 copy, that I now possess) in Belgium (a PD-70 country) in 1924 - i.e. before January 1, 1927.

The photographer's name is not indicated on the original (also not on the back), but I have reliable info from my mother (daughter of the person depicted) who he was: The "one and only" professional photographer in her town, back in the 1920s and 1930s. As far as I could find out, the photographer died either in 1946 or 1949 - I have seen contradicting sources. The-Real-MCE (talk) 19:48, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Anatole van Assche.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 22:02, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
This should ultimately be OK, but I'm not sure how best to handle it. Even if it gets deleted temporarily in seven days, we can restore it once this gets sorted through. If we can't get it sorted out here on the help desk in about 48 hours, we can move the discussion over to Commons:Village pump/Copyright, which is where there is more expertise on tricky copyright questions. - Jmabel ! talk 22:07, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
With respect to the almost-certain original photographer, here is a link (in Dutch, sorry) that lists his date of death as December 4, 1949: https://www.erfgoud.be/nl/lees/368. As mentioned, I have previously seen 1946 (as a footnote in some handwritten family documentation).
In any case, taking the worst case assumption: December 1949 is (almost) 73 years ago and hence past PD-70.
Most of all, however, the picture is explicitly dated as July 1924, which predates the January 1, 1927 date for the US. The-Real-MCE (talk) 11:10, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
I edited the file page; I think this should now be sufficient, but someone may have some better template to separate out the full image (with frame) from the photo in the frame. - Jmabel ! talk 15:04, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

how do i check if a youtube video is under Template:YouTube CC-BY? CubanoBoi (talk) 23:33, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

I guess the easiest way is to go to the YouTube website hosting that video and click on Show more in the video description. If the video is released under CC-BY, then this licence will be just below the video description. Beware that YouTube is a user content hosting platform and as such the video may in fact be a copyright violation on YouTube as well. Check other sources for the same licence as well. Video description usually points to some website if the video on YouTube is original or an official copy, and that website may point to the YouTube channel that uploaded the video. If that is the case, then you're safe to use the video. If not, don't lose all hopes, just look elsewhere. If you make a mistake, someone will eventually find out and mark the file for deletion (and report the video on YouTube). Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:56, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

I am fairly new and just finished my first article on Wikipedia and have not learned how to get around in Wikipedia and Wikimedia yet, but I am slowly learning. I just want to get this done and it is hard to find the answers. Cjmodica (talk) 15:41, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
@Cjmodica: The process is explained at COM:VRT, but the permission has to come from the copyright-holder, not via a third party. Or, as an alternative approach, they can indicate the license explicitly on a site that is clearly under their control, and you can cite that as a source. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
The email permission came from the actual persons that took the pictures. What more do I need to do?Cjmodica (talk) 21:42, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
@Cjmodica: The pictures in question are:
  • File:1952 Tommy Byars.jpg - Claimed as "own work", which contradicts the other things you've said. Author needs to be accurately attributed. Similarly for date: obviously not 13 October 2022, which is what is currently stated.
  • File:Byars Harley Davidson Dealership.jpg - Similarly on the "own work" claim. And is this public domain? If so on what basis (if it was published in the U.S. in 1918, yes, it is public domain, but that's a very long way from what you claim here: you say you are the author and are granting a CC-BY-SA license. If you don't own a copyright, you can't grant a license.) Also, you give a precise date down to the day (1 January 1918). It seems odd that you would know the exact day it was taken but not the author... or the source!
  • File:Tommy Byars -63.jpg - you currently indicate you took this photo 13 October 2022. That seems unlikely, but if you took it yesterday surely you have a higher-resolution version you can upload than 480 × 640 pixels. And if it is wrong, please correct the statements about authorship & date to something actually true.
  • Finally, File:Daytona Monument Wall.jpg. Normally I'd take at face value the claim that you took the photo yourself on 16 September 2022, but I assume you can see why given the other three cases, I am not yet taking that for granted.
So what more you need to do is (1) correct the source, date, and author for each of these as may be needed then (2) go to Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Cjmodica and state that you have now sorted this out. When you do that, ping the nominator (User:C.Suthorn) and ask that person to check your work and see if they have any further questions. Request that if they think this is now OK, they indicate that and withdraw the nomination, or if they still have specific concerns about any of the images they state their remaining concerns.
@C.Suthorn: when nominating for deletion you probably could have been clearer in saying that it was the "author, source, and date" that needed clarification, not the "description", given that the latter is the name of one of the fields in the {{Information}} template and is not the field where there was a problem. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Mrs. Byars has given permission for me to use the photo freely as I wish. I have provided a copy of her email. Cjmodica (talk) 11:05, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
[Ticket#2022101410008923] Daytona Monument Wall was taken by Ms. Venessa Thompson, who lives in Daytona, FL., She has provided an email giving permission to use the three picture freely as I wish. I have provided the email permission to you from Ms.Thompson. Although she sent three pictures, I only uploaded one of the pictures of the wall showing Tommy Byars #63 name on the wall and chose not use the other two pictures since I had upload another picture of Tommy Byars standing in front of the wall, ticket number 2022101410009039 which was taken by the spouse of Tommy Byars prior to his death and you have received a copy of her permission to use the picture freely as I wish. I understood that I could use it as mine (meaning my work, not meaning that I took the picture), not really understanding the wording on your website when uploading. Not sure what else to do! Cjmodica (talk) 11:20, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
You stated: "Finally, File:Daytona Monument Wall.jpg. Normally I'd take at face value the claim that you took the photo yourself on 16 September 2022, but I assume you can see why given the other three cases, I am not yet taking that for granted." As I explained several time already, Mrs. Byars took the picture of her husband, Tommy Byars, prior to his death in 2017. She has give permission to use the picture as I wish. Not understanding your upload choices, I believed that the picture was mine (not my own work, but mine to publish). Cjmodica (talk) 11:36, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
I wish to note that all of the pictures for Ticket#2022101410008923 and for Ticket#2022101410009039 WERE provided by the original persons who took the pictures. Cjmodica (talk) 11:24, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
You state: "File:Tommy Byars -63.jpg- you currently indicate you took this photo 13 October 2022. That seems unlikely, but if you took it yesterday surely you have a higher-resolution version you can upload than 480 × 640 pixels. And if it is wrong, please correct the statements about authorship & date to something actually true." This IS highly likely since I requested a volunteer to go and personally take the picture at the wall for me. As I stated above, her name is Ms. Venessa Thompson, who lives in Daytona, FL. She sent the pictures to me via email and I sent you a copy of the email to you. What more proof do I need? Cjmodica (talk) 11:29, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
I should not even have to be addressing this file since it has already been approved by Wikimedia. You stated: "File:1952 Tommy Byars.jpg - Claimed as "own work", which contradicts the other things you've said. Author needs to be accurately attributed. Similarly for date: obviously not 13 October 2022, which is what is currently stated." My answer: This picture of Tommy Byars, was taken by Ray Byars who died in 1952. His son, Tommy Byars, became the owner of the picture. When Tommy Byars died, his wife became the heir of Tommy Byars and the owner of the picture. The picture is over 70 years old since Ray Byars died in 1952. I have provided permission to use the picture as I wished, thinking that it was mine to use, not claiming that I actually took the picture as I would have been a baby at that time. Wikimedia has already approved this picture. Cjmodica (talk) 11:59, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
You stated: "File:Byars Harley Davidson Dealership.jpg - Similarly on the "own work" claim. It seems odd that you would know the exact day it was taken but not the author... or the source!"
Since permission was given to me to use the pictures freely as I wish, I believed that the pictures were mine (not meaning that I actually took the pictures). I am not experienced in this and handicapped in your language on Wikipedia so please forgive me for using the wrong terminology. As I explained in a previous statement somewhere on this website, the 1918 picture was taken by Ray Byars, the original owner of Byars Harley davidson, in the 20s or 30s. His son, Tommy Byars, was the heir of Ray Byars and the owner of the picture. Ms. Byars was the heir of Tommy Byars and became the owner of the picture. The picture is over 90 years old. Ms. Byars gave the picture to me with permission to use it freely as I wish. I never meant to say that I actually took the picture as it was taken at least 20 years before I was born. Wikimedia's upload website would not allow me to use a guestimated date. It kept requiring an exact date and all I knew to do was put in a date. The picture was taken sometime after 1918, but most likely in the 20s or 30s according to a news article in 1930s. Ms. Byars listed the date as 1918. Cjmodica (talk) 11:51, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Upload a Picture with Permission of Copyright

@Cjmodica: If the file is a duplicate then you probably don't need to upload another copy. You can just use that copy that's already here. The upload tool should have told you the name of the existing copy. Is there some reason why that won't work? --bjh21 (talk) 16:28, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Deleting a picture

For the Northern Automobile, there is a picture of car identified as a 1902 Northern 5 hp Runabout. The car is actually a Spaulding that the restorer mistakenly restored as a Northern. The Northern never had a shield on the side, a flat front end or a raised bead running from the back of the seat to above the muffler. The Spaulding did have these. This information was obtained from a comparison of the Wikipedia photo with contemporary advertisements for the Northern and Spaulding. Also, a professional restorer has seen pictures of this car's rear end before restoration and it is neither from a Northern or a Curved Dash Oldsmobile or a Model T Ford. I can provide this source material but it is easily obtained online. I couldn't find a way to delete it in the visual editor. Watsekavince (talk) 03:57, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

I own "art works" created by deceased relative - can I upload photographs of these?

I own "art works" created by deceased relative (passed away, 1986). I own these, through inheritance. Can I upload photographs of these? 27 zephyr (talk) 16:18, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Addition: In the media-upload section, there is a check-box labelled "this is my own work." As I own the "art works" through inheritance, does this meet the "my own work" criterion? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27 zephyr (talk • contribs) 16:33, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

  1. @27 zephyr: If you are the heir to their intellectual property, you may upload using an "heirs" licence (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}). If you are not the heir to their intellectual property then, no, you should not upload these. Inheriting the objects does not necessarily make you heir to their intellectual property: if the latter was not specified, most likely they went to whatever individual inherited the residuum of the estate. But I'm not a lawyer, and I know nothing of your specific case, or even what country's laws you would be talking about, so take that with the proverbial grain of salt.
  2. No, being someone's heir does not make their work your own work. They should be credited as author. If you use the Upload Wizard and can't work out how to get exactly the right information in through that wizard, just do your closest and then edit the resulting file page to get it right. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Book :Martini Lutheri (Martin Luther)

I have the book of Doct. Martini Lutheri Evangelizer, 1863 and wish to find a way to have some pages transcribed into English. Can you suggest some help here? Protrrsec (talk) 16:26, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

I suppose you mean a translation, probably from Latin? The title of the book would be helpful. If this is the Martin Luther, you can find many out-of-copyright translations of his works at Project Gutenberg. He certainly didn't publish anything in 1863, being long dead, so the title of the original work might help finding a translation, too. --rimshottalk 23:50, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

When there are no more appropriate category tags, how can I bypass "Images for review"?

I'm conscientious about allocating categories when I upload images. When I subsequently receive the usual request to add category tags, there seems to be no way I can go to the next page without adding a new tag. Is there a way of doing that? Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 05:12, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for responding, Jmabel. It so happens that I use the Upload Wizard, but my question concerns the next stage: the page that appears when you respond to the alert that's sent some time after the image is uploaded. After clicking on the alert, a page appears, headed "Suggested tags". Under that is a heading, "Images for review" and "You have [n] personal uploads for review", then the uploaded image, then the categories I allocated originally. Finally there are several suggested tags and an "Add tag" button. The problem is that if I don't have an additional tag to add, there is no way (as far as I can see) to exit the page without having to add another tag (the "Skip" button leads to other un-actioned pages but comes back to be actioned after the others are done). Asking other users to mix into a discussion

Hello, does Commons have some space that specifically is designed for drawing users' attention to an ongoing or just started discussion (on any topic), for instance when the number of participants is considered (or expected) to be too low? My main wiki, nl.wikipedia, does have such a space, "Overleg gewenst", and I was looking for an equivalent here. (This time, I used the Village pump for this aim.) Zijling (talk) 09:30, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

nl.wikisource has such an space. It is linked at "in other languages". If there were more projects with an equivalent page, they would also be linked there . C.Suthorn (talk) 14:55, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
@Zijling: We don't have such a specific thing on Commons. Assuming the request is genuinely merited, the Village pump is a good choice. When canvassing like that, you should always mention in the discussion you have linked to that you did this canvassing, and where. - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

White House Christmas Tree photos from 2017 & 2020

I've already talked about this on another user's page, but I thought I should bring it up here too because I have Asperger's Syndrome and need some help. I'm trying to upload official photos from these years. I've found one of the 2020 White House Christmas Tree. It was from Trump White House Archives and it was taken by Andrea Hanks and it is part of the public domain. We could add it to Category:Photographs by Andrea Hanks. [3] This source also confirms that it is an official photo taken by Hanks. [4] As for the 2017 White House Christmas Tree I found a photo from the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States that we could use. [5] Or maybe we could use the one from the White House Historical Association. [6] Will any of these work? I'm also hoping to find the ones for 2013 and 2015. How to find public domain paintings and drawings in high quality?

I want to download high quality public domain paintings images like the image that has more than 4843×3756 pixel size and has more than 300dpi. Where can I find those images, and how many of those high quality images do you have? I saw lots of them are in 1000-2000 pixel size.

Hi, and welcome. You could start with the 248,000+ files in Category:Large images. You may click on the "Original file" links (right-click and "Save link as..." or similar in some browsers). See also COM:REUSE and COM:SIGN. Also, the dpi achieved depends on the size of the output medium - 4843×3756 pixels at 300dpi equates to a print or display area of 16.14×12.52 inches or 41.00×31.80 cm.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:10, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Is there a way to repost the same image only with better quality? D011656! (talk) 14:07, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

  • @D011656!: Yes. If it is your own upload, you can just overwrite it. If it's someone else's and they are still active here you can consult them about whether an overwrite would be acceptable.
  • If it is simply higher-resolution, that's almost always OK to overwrite (but do remember to note if there is a different source). That is not the case if "better quality" means you like (for example) the color balance better.
  • Otherwise (e.g. different color balance etc., not yours, and no agreement from the original uploader) you should upload under a distinct name and link the two using {{Other version}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:27, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

How, under WC rules, to upload a certificate of membership of an organization, the layout of which - necessarily - includes its logo, which is protected (i.e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Insigne_Academiae_Europaeae.svg) Eteru (talk) 12:55, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

I think you know the answer. You can't upload any kind of picture or document that contains a copyright protected content. If such content is present, it must be removed before uploading. I'm not sure if that is legally possible for a certificate document as any kind of alteration invalidates legitimacy of such document, so I'm afraid you can't upload said certificate. You may be able to upload it to the English language Wikipedia as per w:WP:F, but I strongly recommend you to double check for yourself if it is allowed to do so for certificates. If it can be used, then only under a valid Fair Use Rationale. If you fail to provide a valid Rationale, your upload will be deleted. I'm not sure if you can upload a certificate that includes a copyright protected material already in use in another article. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 13:04, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
While User:Polda18 is doubtless right that in some cases alterations to the document is illegal (which would effectively be a "no derivatives" restriction, making it ineligible for Commons in any case), for others you can edit the certificate by placing a Gaussian blur over the logo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
The thing is that while it may not be downright illegal, it still invalidates the certificate if you remove an essential part from it. The logo is used to identify the organization, which means it's essential to the certificate. Removing it or bluring it removes an essential feature. It's no big deal if you just want to use it for illustration purposes, I'm just not sure if it's okay from educational perspective as these kinds of alterations don't accurately represent the subject. Plus, the design of the entire certificate may be copyright protected from what we know, not only the logo, which would make it inelligible for Commons anyway. Hi, I am trying to publish a photo that is taken by a friend of mine who has given me permission to publish his photo. He also designed the sign that is the subject of the photo. I was able to upload the image, however I can't seem to find the right way to give it up as a public domain image, which he wants. The error messages I am getting are very confusing to me, and all I want is for the image not to be taken down. I know that the image is in fact free to use and I have gotten permission to put it into public domain by the author. Additionally, it contains no people in the photo. I am getting frustrated because the licensing and copyright instructions keep leading me to more and more links about code instructions that are very crytic-- all I want is for the image not to be taken down. Is there anyone who could easily describe what I am to change in the coding to make it not disappear? This is the image I am referring to:

You seem to have added a license manually, so you should be able to just remove the "NoLicense" tag from the source code.
Also, if you want to put it in the public domain (instead of CC BY-SA 4.0, under which it's currently listed), use CC0. Just paste this text in the license section:
{{cc-zero}}
and you'll get this:
Creative Commons CC-Zero This file is made available under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
The person who associated a work with this deed has dedicated the work to the public domain by waiving all of their rights to the work worldwide under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights, to the extent allowed by law. You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.

Hope this helps.

@Emmett79 and Toast for Teddy: I'm afraid there is a bit more to it than that. You can't release Mark Favermann's rights on his behalf. We need one of two things:
  • On a site or page that Mark Favermann clearly controls (e.g. personal website, public Facebook posting, etc.) he can post the photo and either a license, or a release into the public domain, whichever he prefers.
  • He can go through the process described at COM:VRT to send an email indicating the release of rights. Again, you cannot do this for him, the release has to come from him.

Thank you so much everyone. I'll dive back into this when I have more time. You have been so helpful.

Hi there,

How to change logo on a page without sharing with public?

Advance thanks for any assistance. GowriAPS (talk) 03:07, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

This site is about "sharing with public". What do you want to achieve? Which page? Which logo? --C.Suthorn (talk) 07:37, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
@GowriAPS: This appears to concern the logo in the infobox at en:Australian Psychological Society, File:APS-logo-horizontal-Col-pos-RGB.svg. Vanishing some of that information and your signature from this section was not cool. Was AusPsychSoc authorized to license that logo? Are they or you authorized to license the new logo? If not, who is? Is the new logo https://psychology.org.au/APS/assets/images/logo-aps-large.svg (with white imagery on a clear background) atop https://psychology.org.au/ ? If not, where may we find it?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:15, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

I have checked the licencing of this image which is a screenshot of a YouTube video. That video appears to meet the necessary criteria for transfer here.

Hello and welcome to Wikimedia Commons.
Your files were probably deleted because you failed to provide a valid license accepted by Commons. If you believe this was mistake, you can request an undeletion of your files and provide some way to check the rights. The easiest way is to simply go through VRT process, where you have to contact copyright holder and ask them to contact the VRT through permissions@wikimedia.org to send a ticket confirming the release under a free license with a carbon copy sent to you, or send it yourself, if you are the copyright holder. Please note that Commons cannot accept non-free media. More info at Commons:Licensing.

Public domain wikimedia images for commercial use?

I found the following on the wikicommons site... "All media files on Wikimedia Commons can be used by anyone, including commercially and each media file has information about which license it uses". The most common licenses used are created by Creative Commons <https://creativecommons.org/> which require the author to be credited. I would like to be certain that we can download and use freely, any image on wikimedia commons, including on products for sale? Chris 180.150.25.62 21:24, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

  • Your topic for this section mentions "public domain" but than you are asking about licensed images. That leads me to suspect that you don't have a basic understanding of these terms, and you are going to probably get yourself in a lot of legal trouble if you proceed without at least generally understanding what these are about. I strongly recommend that you read public domain and COM:L.
  • There is no one general answer to what you have to do to use a particular image legally. Wikimedia Commons accepts a variety of licenses, as well as public domain images. Some images have further non-copyright restrictions (e.g. if you are planning to reprint images commercially, you also ought to have a decent understanding of personality rights and trademarks) and the different licenses have varying requirements. I'm not a lawyer, and no one here can give you legal advice, but I am giving you the informal advice that if you are going into the business of printing other people's images, you really ought to get basic understanding of intellectual property law before you start turning out product or selling anything. - Jmabel ! talk 04:33, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Upload new Logo in Infobox

The logo of a company changed and now I want to upload the new logo in the infobox. But it is not allowed on wikimedia commons because it is a logo. How do I upload it without Wikimedia Commons? Wfüberarbeitung (talk) 12:12, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

@Wfüberarbeitung: Hi, and welcome. Please read Template:Editnotices/Page/Commons:Help desk again. More specifically, we need precise details (what company, what logo filename did you want to replace, where did you get the new logo, did you want to replace or overwrite the old logo, what license do you have for the new logo, how do you know about that license; what happened, what did any error messages say?).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:27, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Jeff, thank you for helping. The company is Wayss & Freytag , I want to replace the green orange logo (linked) in the infobox, because the companies design changed due to a new parent company. The old logo is not uploaded in wikimedia commons as far as I know and since it is a logo it is not allowed to do so. But I don't know how to change it then.
The new logo was given to me as the offical new logo, it is also on the official website of the company. There is no error message I just can not find any precise guide on how to change it. Best greetings! Wfüberarbeitung (talk) 14:25, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
@Wfüberarbeitung: can you please link to somewhere online that we can see the new logo? There are characteristics of a logo that determine whether it is copyrightable, and we can't know without seeing it. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The old logo is at de:Datei:Wayss Freytag.svg on German Wikipedia, where it appears a consensus is that they "advise against uploading logos and other works of applied art here for the time being" per a Google Translate of de:Template:Bild-LogoSH. On the other hand, the new logo appears to be white text "W&F" on a blue field with a big white border in https://www.wf-ib.de/fileadmin/templates/assets/icons/wf-logo-new-x2.png as displayed in the top left corner of http://www.wf-ib.de/ (hardly copyrightable and probably qualifying for {{PD-textlogo}}).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:42, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Agreed that if we are talking about http://www.wf-ib.de/ it can use {{Textlogo}} in lieu of a license.
@Wfüberarbeitung: assuming that is the logo you are talking about, just upload it to a distinct filename here on Commons, and then change whatever articles you are concerned about to use that new logo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:41, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
@Wfüberarbeitung Also, please note that any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:02, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Is there a workaround? Ron Clausen (talk) 05:15, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

There might be. However, looking down at the license, this is what I see:

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

Since Commons cannot accept non-commercal use only content, you can't sadly upload this photo to Commons. Make sure to always check the license carefully. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:22, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Well, it also has a license which is acceptable for transfer. Ron Clausen (talk) 21:19, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
I guess you're talking about CC-BY 2.0 (the one on the right). I'm not sure which one applies in this case, because it may be just the uploader didn't know how to change the license in the system and instead specified it in the photo description. That's the main issue. If you're not sure what license you should apply, then don't upload the photo. If you want to upload it and want to clarify, then ask the original author for clarification. Help! How do I add this file?

Okay, so a little background info:

The English-Wikipedia article "Characters in the Mario franchise" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_in_the_Mario_franchise) has a thumbnail image featuring Mario and all his pals, but it's over a decade old and from Club Nintendo, which is a now-discontinued official service by Nintendo.

I want to add a higher-quality, more modern version of this image, found on the official Mario Nintendo website at the bottom of the page (https://mario.nintendo.com/characters/). However, I tried to upload it on Wikipedia and was instructed to go to the Commons upload wizard if it wasn't mine.

So, I went to the upload wizard and that only lets you upload others' files if they're freely licensed, or are in public domain. As far as I know, this specific Mario promotional image is neither of these things, and I can't just break that rule that's plastered on the top of the wizard, can I?

Therefore, my question enters the stage: Is there some way to upload this file? It seems impossible since it isn't remotely mine and I don't have permission from Nintendo (which is nigh impossible to obtain), but a low-quality, official 2010s render of the same characters got on Wikipedia, so I think there's some way to upload it.

Thanks! - Serenbliss (talk) 20:12, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello Serenbliss,
you cannot upload this kind of image here, because Wikimedia Commons does not accept "fair use" images like that. You'll have to upload at en.wp, where this is possible as long as several conditions are met. They have a reference page for "non-free content", see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. Can I re-distribute public domain wikimedia images on my website?

I have read your Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia but I couldn't find out wheter I can re-distribute your CC0 license or public domain images in my website making available for download. Is it okay if there is CC0 license or public domain mark is written? Saayapple (talk) 04:18, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

  • If something is legitimately public domain or CC-0, then there are no restrictions with respect to copyright. There still may be non-copyright restrictions (e.g. personality rights, {{Trademark}}, laws in various countries that may ban certain content, etc.). - Jmabel ! talk 04:37, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
  • There is also the issue whether the public domain claims is true, or the CC-zero licence provided by the real copyright owner. We do our best to verify dubious claims and assert some precaution, but we don't check every file. In some cases the public domain claim is true only for some jurisdictions (such as if it based on 70 years pma while you have 100 years, or you are in a EU country and the 25-years publication right was ignored). Contact an author who does not have his user page

I am a graduate student studying art history. On Wikimedia Commons I found an interesting image of a painting by the artist on whom I'm writing my dissertation. So I just would like to contact the author who uploaded the image, in order to ask about some more details. But the author does not have his own user page and I could not find his contact info anywhere. How can I reach him? Hanako Kawauchi (talk) 05:50, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Write on them user_talk page or use "mail user" menu, if them has provided an email. C.Suthorn (talk) 08:28, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
Note the difference between author and uploader. The artist you are writing about would be the author in most cases, and few of them upload their works here.
If both you and the uploader have enabled e-mail in your user preferences, there will be an e-mail entry in the left-margin menu (the main menu in the new user interface, if you are using that).
You can use the user talk page even if the uploader has neither a user page nor a user talk page, and they will probably be notified when they log in, some will get the notification by e-mail. Quite some users prefer not to create a user page.
Some uploaders are mainly active on some other WMF project and seldom visit Commons. You could check the user's contributions to see whether they are a regular, and if they mostly have "cross wiki" uploads, check their user page at the project mentioned there. You could also check "global" contributions or guess at a project, such as Wikipedia in English and look for their user page there.
If a user has left the project or abandoned the username and never registered an e-mail address (or abandoned that too) you might be out of luck. Somebody else might still be able to answer your questions.

  • @Jaguarnik: If you took the photo yourself, yes, as long as you offer an appropriate free license for the photo. Otherwise, if there is something you cannot crop you can always hide it with a Gaussian blur. - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
If the picture is distorted, you can try fisheye and perspective correction in an advanced graphical editor. If you have Photoshop, you can use that, otherwise I suggest to download and install GIMP, it's completely free and open source. If you don't know how to do it, just upload the photo and someone will fix it for you. Of course make sure that there's not something that would be considered a copyright violation. If you took the photo with a mobile phone, please note that some models add a watermark to the photo. This can be toggleable, but once taken, it can only be removed by editing the image data. Photos on Commons shouldn't generally include a watermark in the picture. Timestamp imprints also shouldn't be part of the image, unless it's necessary to provide an info when the picture was taken. Most of the time it's not necessary. The timestamp when the picture was taken is often included in EXIF data of the picture itself, so it's not necessary to have the timestamp imprint in the image data anyway. If you can't crop the image yourself, we'll do it for you. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:05, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Can I upload drawings of amogus?

The Among Us Crewmate is a character from a video game, and so according to the tutorial I cannot upload my drawings of it. However, amogus, while inspired by the crewmate, is not owned by the creators of Among Us. Is amogus public domain, or does someone hold the copyright? Can I upload a drawing of amogus? @BalaM314: Hi, and welcome. Where did you find amogus?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 05:21, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
It would be my own drawing. BalaM314 (talk) 07:14, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
I assume you are speaking of a drawn meme (something like this). I'm not sure if it is even copyright eligible, there's no copyright information about this image. Memes are quite problematic speaking of copyright, because they're generally lacking any kind of license specification, any form of copyright notice. Memes are wildly copied and shared on social sites, it basically is a form of joke. However, it is a kind of media, and as such we can't simply deem it copyright free. Even if you redrawn the meme yourself, if it is copyright protected, then you can't upload the recreation as it would most certainly qualify as derivative work, which generally speaking isn't allowed to share if the original is copyright protected. Also, memes are generally out of scope of Commons anyway, so it would be probably deleted regardless of the license.
Just a side note: Memes most of the time are copyright violations anyway, since it incorporates screenshots from games, movies, TV shows, etc. or recreations, which most certainly qualify as derivative works, and for copyright protected content, these derivations are not only copyright protected as well, but also might be deemed a copyright violation. Nobody really enforces copyright on memes, as most of the time it is deemed as "fair use", more specifically a parody, and it's just too quickly spread over the internet. Commons however cannot accept "fair use" material, so generally speaking, no memes are allowed. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:25, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Hochladen von Gemälde

Darf ich Gemälde (z.B. Ölbilder, Aquarelle oder Tuschezeichnungen) von meiner Mutter, die in meinem Besitz sind, hier veröffentlichen? HenryP50 (talk) 19:49, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

There are a few factors:
  • Is your mother a notable artist (e.g. roughly at the level where it would be reasonable to have a Wikipedia article about her?). If so, we'd love to have copies of the paintings. If not, probably not: see COM:SCOPE.
  • The images would need to be released under a license that meets the requirements laid out in COM:L. Typically this would be {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, though there are other acceptable licenses.
  • For work like this, we need one of two things to happen:
    1. The license can be explicitly granted on a website or web page clearly under control of the artist or (if she is not alive) the heir(s) to her intellectual property.
    2. The artist or her heirs can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to send an email to a team here that can carry on a confidential correspondence to verify an identity.
  • If your mother is alive, then only she can issue the license. If not, and if you are the heir to her intellectual property, then the permission can come from you; this is why we have license templates like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}.
  • Physical possession of the works is completely separate from ownership of intellectual property rights.
I hope that helps, and I hope you can either understand my English or run it through something like Google Translate. I know enough German to read your question, but not to answer in German. - Jmabel ! talk 04:12, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Historical Article

Hello, am I allowed to upload the following?: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PFHiwale4ieMseJh4kg-JLgy4_6_Jx9F/view?usp=sharing

It was published in 1970 in an internal newspaper for IBM and I am unable to obtain explicit permission. It documents the first computerised racing car game, which was shown on Tomorrow's World in 1970. Tuesday x (talk) 13:49, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Some more questions sorry.
- Who would currently own the copyright to this? IBM or the employee that wrote the article?
- If it's IBM, then can I just contact them to ask permission?
- Is there a template for requesting permission that I can use?
Many thanks. Tuesday x (talk) 14:41, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
@Tuesday x: UK rules are entirely different form U.S. in that era: no registration was required. If you want solid answers on UK, you might better ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. I believe the rule there is anything by an identifiable individual is copyrighted for "life + 70 years" and anything anonymous or from an organization is 70 years. So I don't see any way this would be public domain before 2041. So, yes, you'd almost certainly have to work out who has the copyright and (for Commons) get them to issue a license compatible with COM:L.
For just the English-language Wikipedia, they might allow non-free use. Policies for what is and is not fair use on en-wiki are pretty complicated. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. Looking at the criteria for non-free use, I believe it may qualify but I will check at Village Pump. Tuesday x (talk) 07:31, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

What became of the Deletion Notification Bot?

The Deletion Notification Bot (talk · contribs) hasn't been active since June, but from its user page hasn't been visibly shut off or retired. What happened to it? Should another bot step up to take its place? Belbury (talk) 07:51, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

I guess the bot simply doesn't have something to do currently. Its job is to notify uploaders of files marked for deletion if the marker doesn't do it themself. So I guess since June, nobody forgot to properly notify users of possible copyright violations so far. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 14:30, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
The bot was notifying around 50 users a day, every day, until 2 June this year, since which point it has sent no notifications at all. User behaviour can't have changed that suddenly and consistently.
I would guess that either the bot went offline, or some crucial wiki template was changed in a way that meant the bot was no longer confident about what it was seeing. Pinging @Eatcha as the bot's operator if they can shed any light on it. Belbury (talk) 09:35, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

MLB photographs

Just asking this question because a number of decently well known baseball players without a picture on their Wikipedia page.

I wanted to add some pictures to my favorite baseball players pages. Is this legal? Does MLB copyright the stock photos of the players? Or is it the property of the players? Or should I track down Julio Rodriguez and ask for his picture :P Loltol (talk) 04:50, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

  • @Loltol: let's start from something basic. You ask, "Does MLB copyright the stock photos of the players?" Photographs in the U.S. are copyrighted by default. This has been the case since 1 March 1989. There are some special cases (e.g. photographs taken by U.S. government employees, including those serving in the military, as part of their work are automatically in the public domain), but except for those special cases every photo taken since that date in the U.S. is copyrighted, and can be uploaded to Commons only if there is an appropriate free license.
  • Normally, the original owner of the copyright for a photo is the photographer. The main exception is if the photo is work for hire and their contract includes a transfer of copyright; it is also possible to sell or otherwise transfer the copyright of a photo. As far as I know, that always has to done be in writing (can't be done orally).
  • So, generally, a photo of a ballplayer would not belong to MLB, nor to the player, but to the photographer (though I'm sure MLB has obtained many of these copyrights). Frankly, the chance of getting a free license for anything like this that was taken professionally is slim.
  • By far your best chance is either to take the picture yourself, or arrange to get it taken by someone who would be attending a ballgame where that player is on the roster and who is willing to free-license their work (which at the moment, I'm afraid, is a "wait till next year" proposition), or to find someone on a site such as Flickr who has already taken such a photo and offered such a license (on Flickr, this is usually {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}. - Jmabel ! talk 05:13, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel, alright, thanks! So Would a picture directly from the player be fair use if they consented to its use? .. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Loltol (talk • contribs) 12:48, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

How does one save a copy of a jpg/photo? I see where it saved to my clipboard, but alas I cannot find them. M. Alonzo Gifford (talk) 18:08, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

  • @M. Alonzo Gifford: I'm going to presume here that you are on a Windows PC (if not, please say what you are using). You can right-click on an image, select "Save image as..." and Windows will offer you the usual Explorer-style file control to choose where to save it. This is true not just for Commons but for almost every site on the web (though a few go out of their way to disable this).
  • If you just use "copy image" to put it on your clipboard, you need to paste it into some application (e.g. MS Paint, GIMP, etc.). - Jmabel ! talk 19:37, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Re-upload failure

I've been trying (for about/nearly a day now) to re-upload a better version of a file I uploaded in August and it keeps failing. I've identified the new file (about 50MB, on my computer, for use on Wikisource, format PDF - s/a original), written something in the 'File changes' box, and clicked the 'Upload file' button. What happens then, you ask?

1. The icon in the browser (Chrome) tab changes to a spinner,

2. After quite a number of minutes (haven't timed it) I get a screen with an error message: "This site can’t be reached The webpage at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR"

It strikes me as unusual for something that I expect to be in fairly regular use to be non-functional for so long, so ... is there a problem and/or should I just wait even longer. Or ...? Bio2935c (talk) 21:31, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I suggest you try using User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js (doc at User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:46, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
So you suspect it's an issue with the size and/or "slow connection" (as mentioned in the doc)? I do not think I have a slow connection and I have uploaded file originals of this size a number of times before with zero problems. Also, I'd prefer to not use "workarounds" unless the supported functionality is actually broken. Is it though? Or is there another reason? Like something that will actually "go away" (by itself?) in the foreseeable future, or perhaps a fault that can/should be fixed? Bio2935c (talk) 22:00, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

@Bio2935c you should try the above mentioned Rillke script. It shows you some information about the upload while uploading. It may also help to reboot your computer or try a different device or internet connection. C.Suthorn (talk) 06:16, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
After reading the "phab" thread (many thanks for that!) it seems that this is not a "new" issue, so any hopes of "fixing" it in the foreseeable future are probably nil. I also get the impression that "slow connection" may be in the eyes of the beholder - meaning that what I would consider not slow, could well be "slow" under some circumstances: like a big file and a "slowness" criterion that does not take the file size into account when evaluating whether the upload should have finished.
So I decided to go for the Rillke workaround and it performed excellently. Thanks very much! Bio2935c (talk) 23:30, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Copyright on my photo?

Hello, I have attached some photos on my newly published Wikipedia page and I instantly received a notification of copyright on two of my images. I am the sole owner of these photos and I have made them myself. Also, I received a notification on two of my photos for a source of derivative work. What does this mean? Therefore, I wanted to resolve this notification so it doesn't led to the deletion of my page. Hoping for you reply as soon as possible. Thank You. MainTempleSardhar (talk) 17:47, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

@MainTempleSardhar you uploaded 36 fotos. The fotos are from different years, taken with different cameras, at least one has "temple sardhar" as copyright owner in the EXIF. Four of them have been marked by @Túrelio. To me it looks, like all this images are owned by an organization "temple sardhar", but you are not an organization but a human. If I am correct all images will need a VRT permission or otherwise delete. The page you created is a draft in the english wikipedia. It will not be deleted if the images are deleted. It is however not "your" page. It is a draft in your user space and it might or might not become a page of the enzyclopedia (not if it stays the way it is. references are missing completely). If you are representing "temple sardhar" you may need to verify that and you should verify by VRT that the images can be licensed the way you choose. You should also add categories and better descriptions to the images. C.Suthorn (talk) 18:24, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
@C.Suthornand @Turelio Couple Questions I have..
Yes, I am representing "Shree Swaminarayan Temple - Sardhar." How am I supposed to verify that?
All the images have came from our database from the last 25 years. What is a VRT? and How can I get these images approved by VRT?
Also, how to should I add references to photos if there came from my database?
Thanks and hoping for a response as soon as possible. MainTempleSardhar (talk) 04:02, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. Copyright Query: Newspaper advertisements

I've got a screenshot of a scan of an advertisement that was printed in a 1957 newspaper, The Albuquerque Tribune, that I'd like to include in a Wikipedia article.

According to the US Copyright Office, as a general statement, "If a copyright originally secured before January 1, 1964, was not renewed at the proper time, copyright protection expired at the end of the 28th calendar year of the copyright and could not be restored." (see "Renewal of Copyright")

According to Ebrary, a facsimile of a printed public domain work is not copyrightable, so the scan/screenshot shouldn't attach new copyright, I wouldn't think. (see "Are facsimile copies of public domain works still under copyright?")

According to the University of Pennsylvania, "1957 original copyrights were due to be renewed in 1984 and 1985 (see the Copyright Office database for registrations for these years.)" (see "Copyright registrations for 1957")

The US Copyright Office's Public Catalog for The Albuquerque Tribute shows no renewal entries for 1984 or 1985. (see "USCO Public Catalog Search for Albuquerque Tribune")

Datensuche Datenbank Scans

Guten Tag,

C.Suthorn (talk) 17:20, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Uploading an Image to Article

I want to upload an image to an article called "Impression Management." I just wanted to grant permission if this picture is eligible to use within the Wikipedia guidelines. TheSunshineGirl (talk) 16:38, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

  • @TheSunshineGirl: when you say you want to "grant permission", do you mean to say that you own the rights to the image? Because only the owner of those rights can make such a grant. If you are that owner, yes, go ahead. If not: who owns the image, and what license have they granted?
  • Also: Commons has its own guidelines for images which, with respect to copyright, are sometimes tighter than Wikipedia's. If you aren't the owner of the image, and if it is already online somewhere, in order to say what you can and cannot do it would be helpful for you to provide a link that would let us see the source of the image. If there is more than one image on the page in question, please also say enough that we know which image you are referring to. - Jmabel ! talk 17:19, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
You can upload images to Commons. You can use images from commons in articles. For images to be eligible for upload in commons, they need to be freely licensed. That means that anyone can use the images for any purpose. Your question sounds a bit like, you want to upload an image for use in one article only. That is not possible. Thank you for your help. I found a picture on commons that goes along with my article. The licenses said it was CC by 2.0. Can we use that type of license on Wikipedia? Also, I was able to upload the image successfully by providing information that was asked - providing the link.
I am sorry about the confusion. No, I wasn't trying to say that I own the rights to the image. I was trying to figure out which licenses we are supposed to use for Wikipedia, that is free to the public. TheSunshineGirl (talk) 19:17, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
All images on Commons can be used on Wikipedia – that is the purpose of Commons. You can just link a file from Commons into your Wikipedia article like [[File:Someimage.jpg|thumb|Write a description here.]] The necessary attribution has already been made at Commons, so you don't have to deal with it either. Categorisation of locations

On the Isle of Wight, there is a location called "the Undercliff", which is a strip of land about three or four miles long running along the Island's south-east coast. It is not itself a "populated place" (the primary "populated place" along the Undercliff is the village of St Lawrence). How should this place be categorised? I don't see any obvious possibilities already existing under Category:Isle of Wight. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for that suggestion. I suppose, just to complicate things further, there are two interpretations to "the Undercliff", one topographical and the other "areal". Hmmm. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 11:43, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
