Free emulation software has 74 categories.

Duckstation, Joiplay, Redream, etc. that have been confirmed to be deleted.

Three needs to be deleted along with the category.

I think we need to consider whether to preserve or delete the remaining categories left empty.

Among these categories, it is important to check whether the uploaded files have copyrights and PDs.

There are dozens of files that need to be deleted and left unattended.

From 1964 (emulator) to ZSNES, we'll investigate everything in alphabetical order (A to Z)

All copyrighted and PD files must be deleted.

Out of the 74 categories,

Copyright and PD files without the owner's permission may be uploaded countless times.

End users should be prevented from uploading it.

Weki Media has copyrighted and strongly denied PDs.

There must be a means to solve this problem. 125.181.255.254 16:30, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:ADA Cardano Logo.png

Hi Wiki Commons :)

I have adapted the logo of an already existing file. There is a notice that it may be deleted however I believe that this image is suitable to keep as it is a logo/ geometric shape.

This logo image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text. It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and is therefore in the public domain. Although it is free of copyright restrictions, this image may still be subject to other restrictions. See WP:PD#Fonts and typefaces or Template talk:PD-textlogo for more information.

--Blockchainus Maximus (talk) 16:29, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

@Blockchainus Maximus: Hello. You are right that this is too simple to be copyrighted. I have updated the file description with a link to the original File:Cardano.svg and added a public domain rationale. The deletion notice appeared because not select a copyright licence, or waiver in this case, when you uploaded the file. De728631 (talk) 17:38, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Modified or derivative photograhic images

Hello

This is probably quite a basic question but despite my spending time searching help and reading Commons:Derivative works I'm still unsure.

Would someone, preferably an administrator, please check whether I'm following the correct way of uploading an image I've altered based on a photograph on the Geograph website here: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4833300

My derived or modified image is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Michaels_Primary_School,_Highgate.jpg

I downloaded the original photograph then used an image processor to crop and enhance. Using the upload wizard I put myself as the creator even though I'm not the original photographer. Is this correct or should I have selected the not my own work button?

There's not a copyright issue as the original photo is licensed under CC-BY-SA-2.0 which I've disclosed and given attribution to the photographer.

--Rupples (talk) 03:30, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

@Rupples: It would be much simpler to upload the original with the obvious licensing, then use the crop tool to create your own derivative version under a distinct filename.
I wouldn't say that doing a crop makes the image your "own work". It's still the photographer's work. At most, add "cropped by User:Rupples" or some such. - Jmabel ! talk 03:55, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
Right. Wasn't aware there's a crop tool. Would you kindly point me in its direction? Rupples (talk) 04:06, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
@Rupples: Hi, and welcome. Please see COM:CropTool.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:19, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
Presumably the crop tool only crops the image and I often like to enhance. But I take your point that the original photographer still claims the copyright in the original work. Rupples (talk) 04:40, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Toby Fox.jpg

Hi. I have a question. I uploaded an image of a famous person on Wikimedia Commons from the person on the public social network. This photo is also on third-party sites. The person who took this photo is not listed and is unknown. There are people in the background in this photo, but their faces are not visible. The man himself never objected to the use of his photographs (seemingly). Will this photo be removed, and if so, where (license, copyright, link to something that violates)? --Webokira (talk) 14:39, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

@Webokira: We need the formal written permission of the copyright holder for all content previously published elsewhere. Do not upload any image if you don't know who owns the copyright. Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:00, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Trying to update a photo on a musicians page

Hello all,

I'm trying to update a very old photo on Jack Harlow's wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Harlow. I have photos that were taken in house, we own the copyrights and have used it in other places. What is the process to get this done? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eodigimark (talk • contribs) 23:29, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

  • @Eodigimark: You say "we own the copyrights" but you aren't clear on who is "we".
  • Typically, in a situation like this, the easiest thing to do is to first place the image on a page or website that is obviously under control of you, the copyright holder, and indicate an appropriate free license there. I recommend
    w:en:Creative Commons

attribution share alike

This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license.
You are free:
  • to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work
  • to remix – to adapt the work
Under the following conditions:
  • attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • share alike – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same or compatible license as the original.

, which is the most restrictive license that is compatible with Commons' required licensing. Then cite that as your source when you upload the photo.

  • If for some reason that is not possible, then use the approach outlined in COM:VRT. This will work, but it usually requires a few emails back and forth with the team that handle confidential correspondence, and they tend to be a bit backlogged, often by several weeks.
  • Also: please see COM:SIGN. - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I have found a file called File:Janice Fitzgerald Media.png which I’ve found to have been taken from a YouTube video. Releasing designs on Commons

If I make a design and upload a picture of it to Commons, may I release the design under a different license than the picture? For example, can I a release a picture of a design under the CC Share-Alike 4.0 license and the design itself under the CC Share-Alike 3.0 license? New "States of the United States" box for cemeteries by county not linking to other entries

Hi all,

I've created a category called: Cemeteries in Washington (state) by county

The link-up with the other Cemeteries by county categories ( Category:Cemeteries in Tennessee by county , and Category:Cemeteries in Louisiana by parish, parish being the equivalent of a county) went well, but on the "States of the United States" box in my new entry for Washington (state) it doesn't show the other states, while Washington State has been updated on the "States of the United States" on the other entries.

So in essence, is there something I need to manually perform in order to display the "States of the United States" box for my new entry?

Thank you kindly for any help!

Hi, and welcome. https://lichess.org/ says it is "free (really), libre, no-ads, open source", but provides no license per se. "really" in the above links to https://lichess.org/features , which does not mention licensing. However, "About Lichess..." at the end of that line links to https://lichess.org/about , which says it is "free/libre, open-source", but also provides no license per se. The "GitHub" link there links to https://github.com/ornicar/lila , which contains https://github.com/ornicar/lila/blob/master/LICENSE , which contains the GNU Affero General Public License version 3 documented at https://www.gnu.org/licenses/#AGPL , which we accept and use here via {{AGPL}}. Mark as prominent?

Hello. What does "Mark as prominent" do? Thanks! --Hulged (talk) 08:09, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

@Hulged As far as I can tell, it does exactly what it says: marks something as prominent. For an example of this, see my latest upload. It is a figure skating pair cropped to focus on one skater, but it also shows part of the other skater. So I have marked it as depicting both skaters, but only one of them prominently.
The real question is: What does "mark as prominent" do for claims other than "depicts"? I have not found any use for this. Brianjd (talk) 08:43, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Ben yazar Berrin ERGÜÇ özgeçmişim wikimedia yayınlanması için ne yapmam gerekir'

Translated via Google: "I am the author Berrin ERGÜÇ, what should I do for my CV to be published on wikimedia?"
@Ergüç: Hello and welcome. First of all, this is not Wikipedia but Wikimedia Commons where we collect free media. As to Wikipedia, it is strongly discouraged to write your own biography at Wikipedia because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia where ideally only notable topics are presented, and you will have a conflict of interest writing about yourself. When your work as an author is notable though, that is when your books and writings have gained national or international attention, there will be a time when someone else will write an article about you. So, the recommended way in such cases is to wait. De728631 (talk) 14:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Photos taken of a public mural

Hello,

I'm writing about images used on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oaxaca_en_la_historia_y_en_el_mito

This is a new page. I am a newbie to writing Wikipedia articles.

In the early stages of the pages development, a question was raised about whether as the initial developer I could use the images. I think that it was just one person who raised that question. Some 50 changes were made to the first draft by various people, the revised draft was approved by David notMD. The article went live and I thought that everything was under control.

Today I received a message from JopkeB and it seems that they have nominated all my images for deletion.

The images I used are from photographs I took of a 40 year old public mural o Oaxaca, Mexico.

Is there a process by which I can get a stamp of approval that will go on my images? Is that the issue? How do I do that?

A quick scan of other muralists in wikipedia reveals that photos of murals are used. It must be feasible to use my images. How do i go about getting the required permissions?

Deleting photos

Hello Sandus06, the 4 images of yours are really good and thus, I recommend you to think again before this. If you still want to delete it, as per criterion G7 of speedy deletion, you can nominate for deletion as they have crossed the 7 day mark in which they can be speedy deleted. Please also see COM:SIGN --Contributers2020Talk to me here 11:16, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
@Contributers2020 Actually, only one of the four images has crossed the 7 day mark (Oversiktsbilde Skjoldabukta April 2021.jpg). However, one of the other images (Skjold kirke bilde med noe snø på bakken.jpg) is in use at no:Skjold kirke (Bergen). The other two images remain eligible for criterion G7 speedy deletion. I also added a timestamp to the original post, allowing use of the reply tool. Brianjd (talk) 07:02, 7 December 2021 (UTC) edited 07:09, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Sandus06 just to be clear, these are unlikely to be deleted. When you uploaded, you granted an irrevocable license. This site wouldn't work if people could routinely take back their licenses. - Jmabel ! talk 16:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
  • Can I ask, why do you want to delete these? What caused you to change your mind?
Was it, by any chance, the automated deletion request on this file: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Solnedgang over Nordåsvannet.jpg ? Andy Dingley (talk) 17:10, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley: in what sense "automated"? Doesn't look that way to me. And I, for one, can't work out what copyright was supposedly violated here. - Jmabel ! talk 22:17, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

@87.3.181.91 and 02:38, 7 December 2021:

  • My Italian is weak, and I can't quite work out what you are asking. It probably doesn't help that this is posed in very general terms.
  • Could you be specific about what images you want to use, what you want to do with them, and what exactly you are concerned about? Italy has some very unusual laws on photographs of what it considers its historical patrimony, so the answer to this may be much trickier for Italy than it would be for most other countries.

Editing picture for persons page

Good afternoon I am the Exec Assistant for a CEO who has now changed roles.

He has asked me to edit his Wiki page as well as change the image that is featured of him.

Can you please advise how I update the image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by UserLRC (talk • contribs) 04:30, 7 December 2021‎ (UTC)

  • @UserLRC: I assume that by "his Wiki page" you mean a page on Wikipedia. I'll venture that's the English-language Wikipedia since that is the language you are asking your question in. As his executive assistant you should not edit that page, please read the policy on conflicts of interest. You should clearly identify yourself and make a suggestion on the corresponding talk/discussion page, and if that doesn't get attention, you can escalate to en:Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard.
  • Here on Commons, there is less of an issue around conflicts of interest, so you might want to get the desired picture onto Commons before you work the Wikipedia end of this. Normally, copyright on a picture belongs to the photographer, not the subject. If a photographer has taken a picture and wishes to free-license it, either they can open an account here and upload the picture themselves, or (this is often more straightforward) on a site or web page that is clearly under their control, they can post the picture with a clear indication of the license they are granting. Then anyone can reference that as a source and upload the image to Commons.
  • Most other scenarios involve either a transfer of copyright or the copyright-holder authorizing someone else to upload on their behalf. Those pretty much require going through the process outlined at COM:VRT so that we know that the uploaded photo is not a violation of someone else's copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 05:35, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Subject: Sheep in the snow by Jen Carfagno.

RE:- Jen Carfagno,

As a child of a farming family and at the age of 7 I was a sheepherder. Wintering sheep was a job that consisted of bringing the flock back the barns and tending them while they had their lambs and needed protection from the predators, mainly wolves. We had very deep snowfalls in central Minnesota of over 4 feet and sheep are not able to move and forage in such an environment. Moving the herd to the barns was done in October and made me question the Christmas story and what it said in Luke2:8. This is the practice around the world where Goats and sheep are kept and managed in herds. A search of "Wintering Sheep" will give you a lot of answers to your question you asked during you December 7 broadcast.

If you have any questions about this part of the Christmas Story, you can contact me at ivanc.565@gmail.com . I will only give you the results of my study of this subject. I am not out to end the Story of Jesus as I am a believer. I just think that someone embellished parts of it. The Book has it all laid out if someone wants to do a study on their own.

Copyright help regarding File:Centris analis nest.png

Hello, I have been making a wikipedia page for a bee species and I reached out to the authors of a scientific paper asking if I could use their figures in the article. They said yes but now I am unsure how to label the copyright information so that I do not get in trouble for having it in the article.--TNFreeman23 (talk) 07:46, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

@TNFreeman23 the authors will need to decide for a license that's compatible with COM:L. If I were you, I'd propose something like CC-BY-SA 4.0 or CC-BY 4.0, as that is something they are likely to be familiar with from en:Open access publishing. For proper documentation of the permission, follow the instructions at COM:VRT (section "If you are NOT the copyright holder"). Feel free to ask here if you need further assistence. El Grafo (talk) 09:02, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
@TNFreeman23: Please note also that such requests for reuse from Apidologie may not be handled by the authors themselves, but need to go through the publisher's office in the first place. See the journal's copyright and permission policy. De728631 (talk) 09:16, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
Ugh, yes, very true, unfortunately! Depending on the conditions of the contract, even the authors may not be able to use their own work elsewhere without getting asking the publisher for permission. Given that the authors agreed, I was assuming that they did retain the necessary rights to grant that permission. But it is entirely possible (and not even all that unlikely) that they transferred all their rights to the publisher without even realizing. El Grafo (talk) 12:56, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Question on file usage of Commons files by external web pages

After years I realized only now that Commons is structured such that (as a special use case) external web pages may include images (or other files) directly without any detour like downloading and hosting the images on their own web server - which is, by directly including the web adress of the image in the HTML code of the external web page. Suddenly, I finally understand why there are several different resolutions provided, down to only some 100 pix length and width, below each Commons image. Now my question: Is there any possibility to get statistics on how often a specific file is used in that way? Is there an internal counter? And does an external page impression/access of the pic, which is generated in that way from an external web page, add to the access count displayed for each day in the pageviews tool on the toolserver? Pittigrilli (talk) 01:00, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: It looks like you can use the "Referer" control on the pageviews tool to determine whether it counts views of the file on Wikimedia sites (Internal) or on others (External). That would suggest that it counts both. --bjh21 (talk) 19:12, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Picture copy right

Hi there, I am writing an article about plastic upcycling, which includes a chemical upcycling section that talks about recent studies that has potential to recycle plastic more efficiently. However, I am trying to upload a picture that was snipped from the original article, in which it describes the way an enzyme is used in the process. @Hnaz24 That's difficult to answer without knowing what exactly the source of your figure is. If you're talking about an article from a scientific journal, there's a chance that it might have been published en:Open access under a free license that's compatible with COM:L. Otherwise you will most likely obtain a written permission (see COM:VRT) from the copyright holder (probably the publisher). If the article is available online, maybe just post a link here so one of us can have a look ... El Grafo (talk) 08:49, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

@Hnaz24: unfortunately, in that case, you would need to obtain permission from the publisher (not the authors) – which is unlikely to happen.
For most scientific & journalistic purposes, that process would be easy and painless: Springer Nature have a nifty link for that on the bottom of the article page in the "Right and permissions" section. But there is no option available on that site that is compatible with our licensing requirements. It would probably be easier to find someone who can re-draw the figure in a way that does not infringe on any copyrights. --El Grafo (talk) 08:21, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

@Just Arts: Hello. I'm afraid there is no general answer to your question. It depends on a number of circumstances, e.g. who was the original author, where and when was the picture first published, is there a free licence at the source, and, if you meant "edit" as in changing or improving an original picture, the question is who performed which kind of digital edit. So, please be a bit more specific and provide an example of what you meant with "edited pictures". De728631 (talk) 22:10, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

@MDHume: I wish it were that simple, but it isn't. Two major issues:
1. "permission to use the portrait … for your Wikipedia page" is not enough. Commons requires the grant of a specific free license, which must be free enough to allow derivative works and commercial re-use (limited by the personality rights of the person portrayed, which is a non-copyright restriction). I personally recommend the {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} license.
2. We can't accept a forwarded email, etc. as evidence of permission. If the copyright-holder is not the uploader, we need one of two things. The first is quicker, but not always possible:
2a. The copyright-holder can state the permission on a page or site that is clearly theirs. Typically this is done be creating a page on their website specifically for that purpose, that can then be referenced as the source of the photo.
2b. The copyright-holder can write a permission email from an account that is clearly theirs, as described at COM:VRT. THe VRT team handles confidential correspondence. This is a bit slower, often has a bit of a backlog, and sometimes requires a few emails back and forth to ascertain the emailer's identity. - Jmabel ! talk 23:58, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Wrong image: Jongen verlaat ouderlijk huis, Het kind gaat op een ambacht

Hi,

I wanted to use an image for my presentation, and stumbled on a drawing of "Jongen verlaat het ouderlijk huis Het Kind gaat op een Ambacht" from creator Jan Luyken(1712). I think it has the wrong image, according to my literature and i am not allowed to change this and want to ask someone to check this request and change as necessary.

This is the website i found the CC image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jongen_verlaat_het_ouderlijk_huis_Het_Kind_gaat_op_een_Ambacht,_RP-P-1896-A-19368-2911.jpg

I think this is the original: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.147720 Rijks museum, Amsterdam The Netherlands. Owner of the original

Anyone who could fact check my question and change as needed thank you. For I am not able to do this.

Correct, this has been imported wrongly (ping @Mr.Nostalgic: as uploader).
The text snippet reads: "Deugden-praal ter intrede van Z.K.M. George 1, Koning v. Gr. Britanje & c. in London. 1 okt. 1714". It is a parade of some kind for His Royal Highness King George 1, King of Great Brittain, in London. Ciell (talk) 19:49, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
L.S. If you follow the source, it clearly shows the same title as i have uploaded and it clearly is wrong. :) I have requested the Rijksmuseum to correct this and as soon as this is done i will change the title. Unless someone else wants do do it upfront. Thanks for noticing. Regards Mr.Nostalgic (talk) 09:59, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
@Mr.Nostalgic: I can easily change the title, but then the whole description with the image would be wrong? Was the right image from 1712 somewhere in your set, is it somewhere else on Commons already - maybe under a wrong title as well? Ciell (talk) 10:38, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Hi Ciel, i really don't know. I copied all available images 30.000+ including descriptions from their website to commons. If they respond to my question then we can quickly find out.

I'm an experienced Wikipedia editor: user:Allreet. I have received a request from a public radio station to change the logo on their Wikipedia page. They have provided a png file of the logo. Can I upload this to the Commons if I have their permission? And if so. is there anything I need to do in particular? I am not being paid for this, but I am a volunteer deejay for the station. Thanks Allreet (talk) 16:10, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

  • @Allreet: Needs to be under a new filename (don't overwrite the old logo).
  • What license do they intend to provide for it (or is is so simple it can't be copyrighted)?
  • Assuming it needs a license: they have to provide a specific license, and we can't just take your word that they have permission. Either they should indicate the license on their own web site (and then you can use that as a source) or we need them to go thrugh the COM:VRT process.
  • OR... assuming this is for the English-language Wikipedia, you can leave Commons out of this entirely and use en:Template:Non-free_logo to put it in en-wiki on a fair use basis. - Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Can I upload a photo from a U.S. Government publication?

Hello,

I am creating a Wikipedia page for the Moyaone Reserve, a community on the U.S. Register of National Historic Places. Given that designation, several books written about the community, several newspaper and magazine articles written about the community and it's architecture, and some academic work about the community as a model of historic and nature preservation, I am not too worried about notability.

I am wondering though about images. I was thinking about using some photos associated with a publication of the National Park Service: https://www.nps.gov/CRMJournal/winter2008/article3.html

In particular I was hoping to use one of these images:

As you can see from the URLs, these are on a U.S. Government website, so I am imagining in the public domain. You can also see a PDF of a publication that clearly indicates it was a National Park Service publication, had a National Park Service address, etc. Example: http://npshistory.com/newsletters/crm/journal-v3n2.pdf

Would one of these images be ok?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sorendayton (talk • contribs) 21:52, 12 December 2021‎ (UTC)

  • @Sorendayton: article3E says, "Courtesy of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association" and there is no indication of when it dates from, so it would be very hard to guess copyright status. article3A.jpg is clearly from the Washington Post so their copyright would apply (or that of the entity that placed the ad). Whether that was renewed or not, I couldn't tell you. I would guess it wasn't, and that you could use {{PD-US-not renewed}}, but I'd suggest bringing this up at COM:Village pump/Copyright where you are more likely to find an expert.
  • In general: when a U.S. government agency reprints someone else's copyrighted work, that does not change its copyright status. - Jmabel ! talk 02:01, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Yacht? Ferry?

In the Sun Moon Lake area, a yacht is used as a ferry to carry passengers, is it a ferry? Could someone explain to me the difference between "yacht" and "ferry" and give examples of each.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:11, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

@Kai3952: Yachts are generally far more luxurious and have sleeping quarters for guests, while ferries generally have room for large concentrations of passengers on benches or standing, and sometimes vehicles.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:33, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
I'd say a ferry is any boat with a fixed route between two (or more) points, which carries passengers (and nowadays usually vehicles) between those points on a regular schedule. Any type of boat or ship (raft, canoe, sailboat, yacht, cruise ship etc.) can in principle be used as a ferry. —Mahāgaja · talk 15:37, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
Indeed, according to these infos there are regular ferry services on the Sun Moon Lake and the vessels used to carry passengers and goods across the lake on regular schedules are ferries. While most ferries have been specifically built for this purpose, this is not a requirement. --AFBorchert (talk) 15:50, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

@Don Roberto GyDel: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to post permission on their official website or social media, or send it via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg or svg version, too. If you can't get compliant licenses, the images may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Further, regarding File:J B Balfagon-Plano Puerto de Cartagena-1667.png, it would have been better to upload directly from source http://www.ub.edu/geocrit/sn/sn-437_archivos/image003.jpg because it is a jpg file so it would display more crisply, and it doesn't contain the Spanish language text and resizing effects from screenshotting.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:24, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
Unfortunately, both of those files contain a watermark with a probably fraudulent copyright claim from Ministerio de Cultura Archivos Estatales. Ideally the image uploaded here would have no such watermark. —Mahāgaja · talk 15:33, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Image upload not working

Hi! I'm trying to upload an image for the science photo competition, but it always gives an error "Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes."

Tried different images, different browsers, nothing seems to work.

.png and preview incorrectly generated from .svg

I recently uploaded some maps in .svg format (created in QGIS). When I am opening these maps, .svg and thumbnail of these files seems to be shown correctly (at least on my screen), but .png and preview distorts some texts so they overlap the map. For example this file. Any idea what is the problem? Grtek (talk) 23:52, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Boulia Camel Races 2021.jpg

I have been contracted to upload this image from an event onto the event's relevant wikipedia page on behalf of the event organisers, who have received the image through paid-hire of an event photographer. The images are available to view on the event's own website page. I am unclear of the copyright surrounding the use of this image and wether I am free to upload it on behalf of the event organisers?

--Reddusty4000 (talk) 22:57, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Images uploaded to Commons must be released under a free license. The copyright holders will need to contact Commons:Volunteer Response Team via permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to verify that they release all rights to the images. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:24, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
@Reddusty4000 and Beeblebrox: They just have to license the copyright, not "release all rights".   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:23, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
More precisely, they will have to provide a specific license acceptable to Commons. I recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}. - Jmabel ! talk 16:22, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

I'm afraid I've felt it necessary to nominate this user's one upload for deletion as being out of scope. There is no actual question here, machine translation is something like "I want to spread this message," the message presumably being related to "The mediating role of transactional leadership in the relationship between human resource management practices and the sustainability of excellence" which is the title of the 96-page PDF they uploaded. Image copyright opinion

I am working on expanding a referendum article and I'd like to add an image to spice it up. The image in question is a simple ballot paper.

I'd assume that since it is just text with no visible logos it would be fine to upload but I am not so sure. I'd like any opinions I can get on the matter.

Image

Thank you. ProjectHorizons (talk) 08:43, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

@ProjectHorizons: Hi, and welcome. Regardless of the status of the ballot paper, for the photo we would need permission from the photographer or an authorized official of idel-ural.org - see COM:DW and COM:VRT for more info.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:30, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
@ProjectHorizons and Jeff G.: If it's a faithful reproduction of a 2-dimensional object (the ballot paper) then the photographer's permission doesn't enter into it. And if it's a typical ballot without logos, then it is probably not copyrightable. I'd suggest you upload it, link it here, use {{PD-ineligible}} as the license tag, and let us see if it's OK before adding it to the article. I suspect it will be OK. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

How can I figure out the file url in the upload server?

For example, in the following page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:En-us-comment.ogg the actual media file url states as: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/En-us-comment.ogg the directory "b/b3" seems to be a little random -- I can't figure out how it was assigned. So I cannot generate the actual media file url, even if I know the file name En-us-comment.ogg. Anyone can help me on this? I could not find any article discussing this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alanguonz (talk • contribs) 13:08, 16 December 2021‎ (UTC)

If the answer is yes, what are the rules I should follow to do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by P.Shiladitya (talk • contribs) 12:32, 18 December 2021‎ (UTC)

  • In general, no.
This content, like most newspaper content, is the copyright of the newspaper publisher (or sometimes an original photographer). To use material on Commons, it has to be freely licensed, see COM:LICENSING.
You might claim, "But this is important news! Information demands to be free!" and you might have a point. So you might (within tight restrictions) be able to use such content on Wikipedia, claiming what's called "fair use". But Commons doesn't do fair use, or the "this is so important it outweighs copyright" argument. Andy Dingley (talk) 13:47, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
@P.Shiladitya: Not for 60 years per COM:INDIA. Why would you think differently? See COM:L and COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:49, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
P.Shiladitya: While you can't use that newspaper image, this seems like a simple enough map that a similar one could be created without infringing the original's copyright. You could make a request at our Map workshop and see if someone there can help you. They can probably use one of the maps in this category as a basis for a new one. I can see the image clearly at all resolutions. If it wasn't a temporary glitch, it is probably something on your own system that is stopping you from seeing it. You may want to force-refresh your browser to see if that clears it up. From Hill To Shore (talk) 15:20, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

uploads from Flickr

  • Can I request a reviewer or autopatroller right so that I can upload more than 4 images at a time from Flickr? All of my photos on Flickr are currently licensed as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, and as an astrophotographer, I have a number of unique photos available that would benefit the Wikimedia projects, such as Comet 4P/Faye [3] and the recent selenelionic Lunar/Solar eclipses of 2021 [4] [5]. Nicole Sharp (talk) 08:24, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
  • @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: has already been kind enough to upload some of my Flickr albums to Wikimedia Commons, but unfortunately all of the filenames were changed. I posted several requests for this already without any response, but if possible, I would like to have those uploads deleted and then re-uploaded under the correct filenames. I can only do this myself though if I have the reviewer or autopatroller right, though I think an admin would still be needed to delete the original uploads (I cannot upload under a new file name if the file already exists). With the wrong filenames as they are now, there is no way to trace attribution to the original photo if my Flickr Pro account is discontinued, which I would consider integral to the "attribution" requirement of the Creative Commons license (attribution to the original file, as well as attribution to the original author). Nicole Sharp (talk) 08:24, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
    • @Nicole Sharp: Hi, and welcome. You may request Autopatrol at COM:RFR#Autopatrol or License Reviewer at COM:LRR. You may also use {{Rename}} or our RenameLink gadget, or edit the file description pages to reflect the OriginalFileNames, perhaps in the source fields (so for example in File:M&M chocolate chip cookies on a neon pink plate 05.jpg you could change "|source=https://www.flickr.com/photos/92761690@N03/51483215798/" to "|source=[https://www.flickr.com/photos/92761690@N03/51483215798/ IMG_0234]" to form "|source=IMG_0234").   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:30, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
      • I don't think there is any way to rename the files without deleting and re-uploading. I think the Flickr Upload Wizard defaults to "OriginalFileName (FlickrID)" but if the uploader removes both the original filename and the Flickr ID for the filename used on Wikimedia Commons, the Flickr ID can be recovered from the Flickr URL, but if the Flickr URL becomes invalid (for example if I move my photos from Flickr Pro to Piwigo), then there is no way to recover the original filename (the file on Wikimedia Commons is orphaned with regard to the file attribution history, which is why I find it problematic for a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license). Nicole Sharp (talk) 08:41, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
        • Yes, files on Commons can be renamed; details at Commons:File renaming - in short it can be done at will only by admins, stewards, and users pre-approved as file renamers. All other users can request renaming with the {{Rename}} template. Files transferred from Flickr can have their names changed individually while uploading just by editing that field rather than going with mechanical default (which often has unhelpful numerals added to file names). -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:26, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
        • Even if there was a batch renamer (which I don't think there is) it will not work to recover the original file names if they were changed when being uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Each file needs to be renamed to include the original file name, which is available on Flickr but not on Wikimedia Commons (all of the Flickr URLs are still valid). A script would be needed to rename each image on Wikimedia Commons as "OriginalFileName (FlickrID)" but it would have to be able to extract the strings "OriginalFileName" and "FlickrID" from the Flickr URL. The simpler solution seems to be to delete and then re-upload the images with the correct file names? @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: uploaded hundreds of photos, so it would be extremely impractical to try to tag and rename each photo individually. How to get a MP3 transcoded file for a ogg file

I noticed for the dictionary, not all ogg files have MP3 transcoded file ready. I don't know how it works and how can I request a file to be transcoded? Or I have to wait for someone to upload a transcoded version? For example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:En-us-again.ogg this is a very common word but it does not have a MP3 transcoded file ready yet. Any light to this issue? thanks! Uploading a film poster

What if I want to upload a film poster, but I can't since it's not my original work and I need permission to upload it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Red4Smash (talk • contribs)

A moved category left as ghost, files display conflicting data

I noticed that the category Category:Argent, or, azure, carnation, gules in heraldry had an inconsistent order of words for the heraldry categories, so I attempted to make a move action to Category:Argent, azure, gules, or, carnation in heraldry, and move the files with Cat-A-Lot to the corrected category.
What happened was that after the category move, Cat-A-Lot said that it cannot move the files, since the old category is not found. I attempted the same procedure with different methods, and somehow I got the files batch-edited into the new category.
But now I can see the files in both categories. Furthermore, the file page displays the old category in the footer, but its source contains only the newer one.
Also, the redirection header in the old category displays the link of the new category as red, like it would not exist. Nelg (talk, contribs) 15:13, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

@Nelg: I think your primary problem is that you haven't updated the automatic categorisation system to match your change to the categories. As an example, File:Blason Charles d'Albert (1578-1621) orn ext.svg includes tincture=a/o/b/c/g, which gets passed to {{Tincture}}, which passes it to {{Tincture/cat0}}. {{Tincture/cat0}} believes that a/o/b/c/g is a valid tincture combination, so passes it on to {{Tincture/cat2}}, which constructs the category name Category:Argent, or, azure, carnation, gules in heraldry out of it. So if you want to change the category name, you also need to update those templates to accept the new order and either have them convert the old one into the new one or update all the files to have the new tincture=. The tincture templates seem to be mostly maintained by Sarang so he may be able to help. --bjh21 (talk) 17:16, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
@Nelg: As by an old consent the sequence of Tinctures should be: argent, or, and then all the other colors in alphabetcal order.
Your attempt to change it is against that consent!
This category (a/o/b/c/g) is one of the tincture categories which follows that consent; but many categories don't, they have other orders, in most cases the "o" between "g" and "p" by treating it also alphabetically. It is still in discussion whether it is useful at all to categorize by tincture colors; so a great category correction (to the sequence a - A - o - b - B - c - C - g - n - p - s - t - v) has not yet be done, instead an inbetween-template (cat2) leads to the wrong-named categories.
Many different (and contradicting) systems can be found to arrange the sequence of color names. The categorization you are intending does not follow a recognizeable rule, and I cannot see any advantage in it.
It would be useful (but quite a lot of work) to change all the categories, several hundreds, to one sequence order; preferably the mentioned one. But please do not introduce new categories with new sequence orders! In no case without a wide range consent. In no case update the templates to your own ideas! The best will be to undo your changes. Merry Xmas -- sarang사랑 08:22, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
@Sarang: Thanks for undoing the changes. I was not aware of the old custom of listing metals before colors. As you said, there are several categories where or comes after azure and gules, and as I researched for the correct sequence from several categories, eg. in Four-colored heraldic shields, I saw that those categories were in the majority, and assumed that was the custom. Nelg (talk, contribs) 16:31, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
It seems that everybody made categories without any system. Not good for retrieval of commons categories -- sarang사랑 17:58, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
I made a helper template Tinc which, inserted into category descriptions, shows the 'correct' category name. When a consent will prefere another system, the template can then show that names. -- sarang사랑 11:08, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

Something that starts a machine translation software and than adds the result to the file description, or a button, that the user can press to send the file description to a MT software for the user to live view the translation? Can I upload pictures of paintings owned by myself but painted by (late) artists

I have (oil on canvas) paintings from the 20th century, done by known (late) Finnish artists. I would like to upload pictures of the paintings on Wikipedia/Wikimedia commons. Is it fair and OK? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aigle1967 (talk • contribs) 16:51, 27 December 2021‎ (UTC)

  • @Aigle1967: Typically, no. Purchase of a physical work of art does not normally include a transfer of copyright. The copyright would go to the artist's heirs, and is valid for 70 years after the artist's death. So, if they died in 1950 or earlier (1951 next week, when the year ticks over), they are in the public domain, but otherwise, almost certainly no. - Jmabel ! talk 19:36, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

I don’t know what’s going on, but in any case, this is not a vector image, it’s a PNG embedded in an SVG file. This may or may not be the cause of the incorrect rendering (the software seems to render the thumbnail as a fully transparent image), but even if it was rendered correctly, an .svg file gives the impression that it can be infinitely zoomed, which is not the case, and probably even the correct rendering was of lower quality than of a file uploaded as PNG. If you openin Firefox (Chrome doesn’t seem to support this), you can right-click the image, select “Open Image in New Tab”, save the PNG with Ctrl+S, and then upload that to Commons. (Or you can convert the SVG into a truly vector image, which is better, but also a lot more work.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:33, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

Uploading an image as a screenshot of a video on commons

Hello all! For context, I recently created an article on the English Wikipedia for Taichi Ichikawa, who has a category on commons with a video of him (the video in question is File:市川太一さん撮り下ろしコメント動画【numan】沼落ち5秒前!-声優編第29回-.webm, which while it is nominated for deletion, it is nominated due to out of scope, not a copyright violation. I checked the source and the license appears to be legit). Anyways, what I want to do is take a screenshot from that video (which should be permitted by the license) to use on the page I just created as an image of the person. What I want to know is if there is an easy way I can upload the image and tag it as a screenshot of this video. Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I am fairly inexperienced in commons, so any help will be much appreciated. Regards, Link20XX (talk) 04:06, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

Areas with and without maps

Hi,

I have been able to add maps on to pages such as [Upper Beeding parish] and [Brighton and Hove] using the wiki link template, but I don't understand why some wiki data area items are connected to maps and some are not.

I am now trying to use the same method to add a map for [Southwick], but it doesn't seem to have a map associated with it. I am guessing that is because it is of a different governmental organisational level. Is that correct?

I am therefore look for an area with a map. It might be that I will have to use the map of the entire [Adur District], but I don't think so as [Coombes], [Lancing] and [Sompting] all have maps associated with them and they are in the same District.

It could be that I should use the [Shoreham-by-Sea] map but this map (below) doesn't look correct (you will need to copy this map template into your sandbox). It might be correct but I assume not, and if its not what should I do about it?

{{maplink|frame=yes|text=Notable areas around Shoreham-by-Sea|frame-align=left|type1=shape-inverse|id1=Q770599|frame-width=200|frame-height=200|frame-coord={{coord|50.8329|-0.275}}|zoom=14|stroke-color1=#AA1205| stroke-opacity1=0.3|stroke-width1=4 }}

Can anyone help me with this or explain it to me? If there is one-on-one help for the maplink template that would be great. Riparia riparia (talk) 11:00, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

Is this a good enough copyright release for commons?

  • The Library of Congress states that the artist dedicated "to the public all my intellectual property rights, including copyrights throughout the world, in the Collection; however, I reserve to myself all rights, title, and interest I may have in and to all of the intellectual property associated with the Collection for my lifetime."
  • It says he is deceased and that "Privacy and publicity rights may apply."
I think this will be okay as its effect is similar to PD. However, we may need a bespoke licence template as PD won't come into effect here for many years. Editors may argue that the dedication is so similar to PD that we can use the PD tags but that may need consensus.
Does anyone know if we have other examples of posthumous dedication of copyright that we can use as an example? From Hill To Shore (talk) 11:54, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

Looking for your help. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.145.107.146 (talk • contribs) 08:09, 29 December 2021‎ (UTC)

  • You have to be logged in to upload. No one is going to be able to look for logs corresponding to your upload without knowing what account you did this on, but you asked your question here without being logged in.
  • That said: usually this sort of thing happens when people upload small files cross-wiki (e.g. you were uploading from the English-language Wikipedia, not from within Commons itself). Could you try again using Special:UploadWizard here within Commons? Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
This fixed my problem, posted in a question below. I'm deleting my question. This should be in the FAQ IMHO. Thanks! Rbrightwell (talk) 04:46, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

Oh no, that's my account. Please send a temp pw to anotheruser@example.com. ← Just to demonstrate that it doesn't work this way. You didn't assign an email address to User:Tommyboymee, so there is no way to revive access to your account. Create a new one and add a reference to your old account, for example using {{User Alternate Acct}} or the like. --Achim55 (talk) 09:29, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
I have removed the email address from the above comment to protect the user's privacy. We can't provide any help here but leaving the email address in an open comment will increase risk of the user receiving spam. From Hill To Shore (talk) 09:52, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

Public Domain

Hello, I’m working on Draft:Jean Vigoureux (submitted for afc Dec 14) and editor Rusalkii informed me that “own work” was an incorrect designation on at least 3 of the photos: the family photos from 1915, 1920 and 1925. When I was uploading photos I was so afraid of making mistakes that I did what I thought was the “safe” option, ironically because Commons doesn’t allow you to change it after it’s uploaded. Is there a way to change those three to Public Domain? I believe the others (the pictures of the drawings) are my own work because I stitched scans of the drawings in my 2009 version of Photoshop, and try as I might, I could not get a correct crop on any of them. The pictures “stitched” well but the outside edges simply did not line up. JHVfan (talk) 17:52, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Generally scanning drawings and stitching them (though you have not linked to any specific images) do not create any new copyrightable work. So, if the underlying works are in public domain, so are the scans. Therefore you should change them to public domain. Ruslik (talk) 20:28, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
Hi, @Ruslik, thanks for responding to me. Well, this is the part that confuses me. These drawings were in a folder in my house for decades, some were put away since the 1930’s, not having seen the light of day. I guess it’s the word “public.” Also, assuming they are public, how do I change it to that? Do I have to ask the Administrator or is there a way I can do it myself? Also, some drawings were copyrighted in a portfolio in 1943, but the copyright has expired. Is that “public” too? Thanks. JHVfan (talk) 22:16, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
@JHVfan: I strongly suggest that you read en:Public domain. I get the strong feeling that you misunderstand the term. - Jmabel ! talk 03:10, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

@Ruslik and @Jmabel, Hi, I’m very happy to report that I found tags and was able to make changes already. For the three photos I put {{PD-France}} Public domain because the author(s) died more than 70 years ago and {{PD-US}} in the licensing section, Then I put {{PD-Old}} and {{PD-US}} in the Summary section instead of “own work”. For the drawings I have {{PD-US-no notice}} (US work published in the US between 1926 and 1978 but without a copyright notice). Also learning about other tags, such as {{PD-Art}} and {{PD-US-not renewed}} which apply to other aspects of my scans. Thank you both so much for your suggestions and advice! JHVfan (talk) 08:28, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

@JHVfan: Almost right. Those tags should normally be used in the licensing section only (though some editors like to place them in the "permissions=" section instead). For the "source=" section you need to say where you found the image; if you made the image then you should say "own work" but otherwise you should provide a link to the website or details of the book or archive from where you obtained the image. In the "author=" section you should name the creator of the image or say {{unknown|author}} if the name is unknown. From Hill To Shore (talk) 09:19, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
@From Hill To ShoreThank you very much for your advice. You were right about not putting PD in the source section. It got me in a mountain of trouble. An editor (or Administrator) put tags on all 11 or so of my photos that said I would be deleted in 7 days if I didn’t fix it. But I had only messed up four of them. Well, I fixed them and added PDs but I erased a couple of his tags on the ones that had tags and he got really angry and nominated me for deletion. (I knew I should have listened to my intuition when it said: “don’t do that!”) So I tried to fix more things and then he said I needed Permissions. So, I’ll read about that later today. I apologized to him profusely so I hope he forgives me. The good news is I’m learning a lot as I go along. Thank you again for your help.JHVfan (talk) 07:26, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
