Video Upload New Version Limits

Yesterday I uploaded a video (589.4 MB, my own work) but I think the conversion process (to .webm/VP9) adjusted the colour saturation making it too "rich" (pretty rubbish actually).

So I've re-processed the original, converted to .webm/VP9 (pretty much the same size) but when I try and upload the new version I'm limited to 100MB from my computer (where it's stored) and I don't use any of the white-listed external sites (which has a larger upload size limit).

For images I can appreciate the limit but for a video (of reasonable resolution) seems a bit restrictive (given the original upload worked fine) - so now I'm a bit stuck to upload the better version. File is: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:01_Song_Thrush_(2_Dec_2020).webm

EDIT: I do have a web server I can upload it to but not worth white listing that domain just for the one upload but if that's easiest then fine. Nothing against it being white listed, just seems you could end-up with 1000's of white listed sites if many needed that for video).

What should I do? PsamatheM (talk) 16:00, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

@PsamatheM: Did you try User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js? Documentation is on the talk page.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:31, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I read through all that and was worried as it looks like it means creating a custom js file (that I don't know how to do) and if I start messing around then if create stuff deleting it can be a "challenge". I am quite technical but not with Wiki stuff so I'd risk making things worse (plus parts of my UI pagr do not match with the documentation for the js). Thanks. Are there other options (as the original upload colour balance is bad enough to need a better version). PsamatheM (talk) 17:38, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
@PsamatheM: How big is the new version? One of us who uses bigChunkedUpload can probably upload it for you within a day if you put it on your server and send the URL. I won't be home to do it for 6+ hours.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:42, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
@PsamatheM: Is it the LQ version here?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:00, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Neither of the .mp4's on my web site. Because camera recorded mp4 and it's edited you end up with compression on compression (loss of quality) so the upload webm starts from a higher quality. Reflecting, I'm going to have a try at installing the chunked-upload as I suspect I'll be doing this again so don't want to keep calling on others. Seemed the webm export/conversion adjusts colours (I've had similar with e.g. Handbrake affecting brightness converting mp4 to mp4) so whilst I'll try and avoid it happening, this may not be the last. I'll call back if I fail at getting chunked-uploading to work. Thanks for your help PsamatheM (talk) 09:27, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
@PsamatheM: You're welcome. mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); works for me.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:43, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Sorted. Not as challenging as I thought (in fact it worked 1st time!). Thanks for your help. PsamatheM (talk) 14:18, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

copyright question.

MY father was an artist and he passed away in 1987. Most of his works belong to his family. Someone created a page about him and I want to upload an image of his work on this page. What is common procedure for copyrights in this type of situations.

Problems with change of file format

Hi I uploaded a pdf version of an image and was advised to change it to svg format. So I tried to that today by overwriting the existing pdf with the new svg and got this message preventing me:

File extension ".pdf" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/svg+xml).

I can't seem to change the .pdf extension of the original file. How can I change this to this image to a more appropriate format easily? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlbusHaversham (talk • contribs) 14:05, 5 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@AlbusHaversham: Hi, and welcome. Please upload with a new filetype, rather than attempting to overwrite with an incompatible filetype.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:21, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you so much! Can you tell me how to update a new file? Will it replace the previous image (which it is supposed to)? Sorry for the simple questions. I am new to this. Should I use the file upload wizard? I'm just worried the the old image will still be visible if I do. AlbusHaversham (talk) 17:57, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

@AlbusHaversham: You're welcome. Yes, you should use the Upload Wizard. The new file will not replace the old file, you (or someone) would have to edit en:Feline idiopathic cystitis to change to display of the new file. Is it a problem for the old file to still exist? If so, why?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:36, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Oh no - it's not a problem that it exists. It's just I don't want it to be visible in the associated Wikipedia article. I'm assuming that I upload the new svg format file of the image in Wiki Commons and than in the Wikipedia article link to this new file instead of the old pdf one, right?

AlbusHaversham (talk) 19:21, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Actually I think I have worked it out! Thanks for all the help. AlbusHaversham (talk) 19:41, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

De minimus advice

Hi! I’ve read through the DM guidance and still am not 100% certain so hope for some advice. I’m wondering if the steep angle on the painting in this image is sufficient to satisfy the de minimus criteria to avoid copyright infringement (FWIW, it would be used in an en-wiki entry section specifically discussing crowds of visitors to this painting).
Also, I note the sculpture in the foreground (bottom right) and unless someone knows the provenance off the top of their head to be sure it’s old enough to be public domain, I assume it has to be cropped out...which unfortunately would zoom in slightly on the portion including the painting.
Thanks for any advice as I try to get a sense of how to apply the rules! Innisfree987 (talk) 17:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

This image is nearly a 100% example of de minimis. The main focus of the photo is people, but not the works of art, which reproductions are of low quality. Ruslik0 (talk) 20:45, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Find images from category which are not used in Wikipedia page

I’ve completed text entries on the German Wikipedia page w:de:Liste der Stolpersteine in Leipzig and want to add missing images of w:Stolpersteine from the Category:Stolpersteine in Leipzig.

How can I search for images that

  • and not used on that page (or maybe not used anywhere)?

Making a "Taken with Canon XYZ" category hidden?

I uploaded the file File:Man on sand bank in the Maldives looking at sea.jpg and added also the category Taken with Panasonic DMC-TZ18, as it is in the EXIF-data. Problem: There are numerous categories for quite similar Panasonic cameras (like that: Category:Taken with Panasonic DMC-TZ 12, 12, 14...20), but for no.18, there is no cat yet. Hence, the cat stays red. I first tried to include it in the higher category, but deemed this too complicated and risky. What shall I do? (Deleting the cat is the last resort...) • @Info kapstok: Possibly. If it is not derivative work (e.g. doesn't you music someone else owns the rights to, doesn't portray other people's copyrighted artwork, etc.), then you can indicate the intended free license on the YouTube page in question (assuming that is clearly under your control) and cite that in the source/permission section as appropriate when uploading to Commons.

Picture listed as "#4 Police Station. "I don't Think So!" I'm retired from the KCPD and Never ever have seen or known that was a police station. The original 4-station was located at NE Parvin Rd and NE Antioch RD. North of The River, connected to the Fire Station..

Your Picture of the #4 police station is apparently Not True. After 26 years with the PD, and have been retired over 23 years, I've never ever known that was a station. The original #4-Station was Located at NE Parvin Rd, and NE Antioch RD. - North Of The River-KCMO-Clay County MO. I would check closer before stating that was a station.

@Otakuplayer2004: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Uploaded Photos

I uploaded two photos. How will you know where to place them?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Colonelfolsom (talk • contribs) 16:01, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

@Colonelfolsom: did you have somewhere particularly in mind? In general, media are “surfaced” in two main ways: by using the search function or by browsing the category tree. The former method will find text from the description (and other fields) in the information template; the latter depends on relevant category names being linked to the file page. You did fairly well with the captions; I and others have added a few cats. If you can think of any further details that would help a potential user find the images for a given purpose, you can add them at any time.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:20, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Scientific Figure from Open Access Journal

Hello,

I want to use a screenshot of a figure from a paper published in a hybrid open access journal, Optics Communications. How do I go about doing this? The paper was published in 1985 and there is no digital contact information for the authors. Thanks for your time.

Best, Fizzix nrw — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fizzix nrw (talk • contribs) 00:55, 12 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@Fizzix nrw: Hi, and welcome. What would be the citation for that figure? What webpage did you screenshot it from? What copyright or attribution is attached to that figure or references that figure in the end matter? What makes you think that journal is "Open Access"? What can you tell us about the name and lifetime of each author and the dates and countries of writing and publication?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:09, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The Wikipedia page for Optics Communications states that the journal is hybrid open access. The paper is P. Wiorkowski and W. Hartmann. "Investigation of Radiation Imprisonment: Application to Time-Resolved Fluorescence Spectroscopy" Optics Communications 53-4(217-220) (1985). The authors are from Germany, the paper itself was published March 15 1985. I took the screenshot having downloaded a pdf of the paper. I'm unsure of the copyright which is part of why I reached out to the help board. Thanks for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fizzix nrw (talk • contribs) 01:20, 12 December 2020‎ (UTC)
@Fizzix nrw: en:Optics Communications says that journal is 'published by Elsevier' and en:Open access#Licenses says 'Some publishers (e.g. Elsevier) use "author nominal copyright" for OA articles, where the author retains copyright in name only and all rights are transferred to the publisher' with 3 footnotes, so ask Elsevier for permission. Question regarding file copyright status

I was recently editing an article in the English Wikipedia (Blue Yodel No. 1). My intention is to add an audio file to it. Already available here on the Wikimedia Commons is the full song (File:BlueYodelNo.1.ogg). My problem is that I don't really understand the license tags. One of them claims that the work is in the public domain, while the second claims that it is still under copyright in the U.S. Now my questions are: should I use the file already available on the commons? should I upload an excerpt to the English Wikipedia? Are we supposed to keep the file? Thanks in advance.--GDuwenTell me! 19:53, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

@GDuwen: Please understand that, for music recordings made in the US, there are many competing interests. The recording companies, through their industry association RIAA, have had varying success in influencing legislators in Congress and the Senate to help them in preserving, protecting, and defending their recording copyrights for as long as possible, as boiled down in {{PD-US-record}}. Music authors, lyricists, performers, etc. have had less success in preserving, protecting, and defending their copyrights, as boiled down in {{PD-old}}.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:34, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for the quick reply, and I do get that. Since this recording is from 1927, going with "Recordings that were first published between 1923 and 1946 are copyrighted for a period of 100 years after first publication" means that it would be on the PD seven years from now. Then again, we have this PD-old tag on it too (of course since Jimmie Rodgers has been dead for over 70 years). So what I don't understand is if I'm able to use the full clip on the article?, or just upload an excerpt to Wikipedia under fair use?--GDuwenTell me! 19:13, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
@GDuwen: This music recording, recorded 30 November 1927 and published 3 February 1928, is still protected for 100 years from publication through 2028 per {{PD-US-record}}; see Commons:Deletion requests/File:BlueYodelNo.1.ogg. A clip on enwiki is the way to go.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:39, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Well, it is a shame for now. Thanks for the help. Sadly, there are a bunch of Jimmie Rodgers tracks that were uploaded to the Commons currently being used in several Wikipedia articles, in multiple languages that hit the same issue. Oh well, I guess we can re-upload them all in ten years time when the copyright is cleared. Until then, clips, YouTube links, and files that happen to be PD will have to do...--GDuwenTell me! 16:06, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
@GDuwen: You're welcome. Thankfully, RIAA was stopped at 100 years.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:14, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

How to ad a new Ray Bradbury book and new co-author to Bradbury's "All Summer in a Day" Wikipedia page?

Hello Wikipedia Editor who receives this.

I have just published a new book, VENUS REMEMBERED by Ray Bradbury and Jason J. Marchi (that's me), with permission from Bradbury's literary agency, Don Congdon Associates. This is a 56 page book in hardcover book (available at the end of December 2020) and Kindle digital book (published on the 20 November 2020).

The good is now getting good reviews on Amazon.com and Goodreads.com

What's notable about this book is that it features a reprint of Ray Bradbury's classic short story "All Summer in a Day" along with a sequel I wrote titled "When the Rain Stops." The book has a foreword by William F. Nolan (LOGAN'S RUN) and an introduction by Jonathan Eller, director of the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Both stories first appeared together in the Spring 2002 issue of Verbicide magazine edited by Jackson Ellis.

I'm wondering if an editor at Wikipedia might consider it "notable" and significant enough to mention on the "All Summer in a Day" Wikipedia page, since I, Jason J. Marchi, do not yet have a Wikipedia page of my own, although I have published three other books, one a picture book that was a regional Barnes & Noble bestseller in Connecticut on a Native American theme, and I'm also a journalist for a weekly newspaper in Connecticut and recipient of several Society of Professional Journalism awards. I've also been published in Amazing Stories, Weird Tales, Pandora, Futures Mysterious Anthology Magazine, among others, and I am an active (voting) member of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA).

Below is the "All Summer in a Day" Wikipedia page

I thank you for your consideration.

Copyright help regarding File:N17_sign

Hi guys, I'm new here to the world of Wikimedia Commons. I have created this image (https://i.imgur.com/HKcdc2e.png) myself, but I need some helping determining whether or not I can upload it. In the image, I have used a motorway symbol I have retrieved from another user, who published it under the public domain. Am I therefore allowed to upload this image, as I do not need to ask for permission to use the file (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:UK_motorway_symbol.svg)? Thanks in advance - Ethan — Preceding unsigned comment added by EthanL13 (talk • contribs) 12:57, 12 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@EthanL13: Welcome. You don't need to ask permission when you use an image released to the public domain, but it's recommended you give credit to it via the source field (like "motorway symbol from File:UK motorway symbol.svg"). Also, please sign your messages with four tildes (~~~~) at the end, so that it's easier to contact and identify the messenger. Thanks, pandakekok9 13:10, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: Thanks for the quick response! I have since uploaded the file (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:N17_road_sign_ireland.png), however, as there was no source field when I chose "this is my own work", I chose "this is not my own work" and continued from there. Is this the correct procedure? Thanks EthanL13 (talk) 13:59, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
@EthanL13: I think both are correct. You could've chose "this is my own work" and then edit it so that the source field is more accurate after it finished publishing, which is perfectly acceptable. Or, as you did, choose "this is not my own work" in order to specify the source immediately instead of having to edit it afterwards, which is also acceptable. Do what is more convenient for you, as long as it complies with our policies and guidelines that is. :) pandakekok9 14:08, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: OK, thank you very much for the help (and the quick responses)! — Preceding unsigned comment added by EthanL13 (talk • contribs) 15:15, 13 December 2020‎ (UTC)

Pictures of Product Sales Brochures and Products from 1980's -

My question:

Do I need permission to show pictures of a 1984 Color Printer and its inks with a sales brochure?

The Printer was manufactured by Juki, Japan and then told me they no longer have any documentation for this printer. It was manufactured for a company named Howtek, Inc and Howtek changed it's name to ICAD and now sells scanners. The Owner of Howtek, Inc was Robert Howard and he is deceased. ICAD is a publicly funded company and still exists. I called them more than 10 years ago and a person told me they have no records on this printer. Everything has been discarded 7 years after it stopped being sold around 1990.

I worked for Howtek. I attended Sales shows in Atlanta and Las Vegas on the sales floor in the 1980's. I left the company in 1994 and was the service manager.

I received an email saying a photo I submitted to Wikipedia may be removed if I don't respond to the email.

What are my options? I do not want it removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by James K McMahon (talk • contribs) 20:40, 30 November 2020‎ (UTC)

I do have another call into Howtek, Inc. this week. I expect to be ignored or be told this early printer project was dropped and is no longer open for discussion. I spoke to the photographer of my sales brochure and they told me to contact the Copyright office is Washington DC. Seems a bit of a challenge since this is over 35 years ago. I just bought an image of a tiger printed on a Pixelmaster. This does not have any copyright notes on it. But it is very impressive and may catch someone's eye but it still does not explain this thermoplastic inkjet technology very well. I am beginning to think people do not want to hear about the history of printing. Wikipedia asks for content and copyright laws are important. I guess lawyers control the world now. But I keep thinking, if Howtek does not care about their history then everything should be ok. Am I wrong? I know with patent violations, the violator only needs to worry if the inventor complains. I am not trying to steal this technology I am just trying to tell people it existed. It was real once. I will not give up that easy. I will call Howtek again tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I know you are right and this is just a challenge for me. James K McMahon (talk) 22:14, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

  • This is probably all material you could use in a fair-use context, but we made a decision at the outset on Commons that that is not what this site is. The idea here is that (beyond just public-domain material) reusers should be able to conform to a stated "free" license and have no further copyright concerns. For reasons not entirely clear to me, we are infinitely less strict about personality rights and trademarks, mostly just suggesting that people add an appropriate tag to indicate when a particular image might raise concerns in those other areas of intellectual property law. But for copyrights, we really made a decision to be strictest of the strict. - Jmabel ! talk 02:32, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

This image was taken from http://www.omori-game.com/#gallery and the neither the website nor the gallery has license certificates for restricted use, or a watermark showing the original owner or creator. I've also found many of this images being used in other websites, but always giving the credits to OMOCAT, the creator of this image.

I assume this is for public use, and I'm still learning how to use Wikimedia Commons, so I ignore how to tag or add licenses or how they exactly work, etc.

Thank you.

--ELKeiaRo (talk) 22:51, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Unless there is an explicit free licence mentioned at the source website, such images are automatically copyrighted and non-free. Today, in most jurisdictions copyright is automatically granted to creative works without having to add a copyright notice. Also, being available for public viewing on the internet does not mean that anyone can just download and use an image without permission from the copyright holder. I.e. you cannot upload this image here at Commons where we only accept works that are free for anyone to use for any purpose. De728631 (talk) 00:42, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Question about two screenshots from a 1936 cartoon

Hello!

Basically, two years ago I have uploaded two screenshots from a 1936 cartoon, called "Somewhere in Dreamland". So, the cartoon is over 80 years old. It seems like the Cartoon is from America.

My question is, what is the correct licence for those files and are those files correctly uploaded? I have read something about some files becoming public domains after 70 years, is that true?

Those are the two files:

Best regards, Koreanovsky (talk) 12:04, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

  • @Koreanovsky: You have the rules a bit oversimplified: more like 70 years after the death of the creator, and in the case of collective works, the person who dies last counts. So 80 years crom creation is typically not enough to presume public domain. & there are a bunch of other country-specific considerations that can change things in either direction.
  • I'd suggest taking the question of these particular images to COM:Village pump/Copyright and don't be surprised if a rather complicated discussion ensues. - Jmabel ! talk 23:40, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Adding more photos

I uploaded 12 photos to Houston and Pierre Streets Residential Historic District but I would like to add more. There are 41 houses that have contributing status to the historical district. I don't see the upload button any more. I tried to upload a new one and add the category but that has not shown up anywhere. That is 800 Pierre Manhattan Kansas.— Preceding unsigned comment added by SharonPapierdreams (talk • contribs) 12:29, 7 December 2020‎ (UTC)

You seem to be writing about en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Riley County, Kansas. Once there is one picture added to an listing on that page the upload link goes away. It should be simple enough using Special:UploadWizard and copy {{NRHP|09000031}} over to the description.--Snaevar (talk) 14:13, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

I was wondering if there is a way for me to protect a page. Hello I'm new user. I uploaded this image from Unplash. I don't know ho to proceed, it doesn't have commons licence, only Unsplash licence. https://unsplash.com/license

Info Published on October 30, 2020

I made the vectors myself into the image.

--Explite (talk) 11:50, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

@Explite: The underlying image from Unsplash was published after 5th June 2017 and is therefore incompatible with Commons (see {{Unsplash}}). That said, if you are the author of the image from Unsplash, you can re-license the image here under a license compatible with Commons using OTRS. There isn't any correct license tag to use as the image itself is not compatible. Dylsss (talk) 21:09, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

@Dylsss: So even if it's underlying image and modified by me and unslapsh licence agrees with this method, you are going to delete it anyway?

Explite (talk) 17:10, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
@Explite: Yes, it's not that what you are doing isn't allowed in general or incompatible with the Unsplash license; you can use the image elsewhere. It simply isn't allowed here because the Unsplash license is not a fully free license in line with Commons:Licensing. Dylsss (talk) 17:21, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

In addition to the rabbis we have added shows to existing entries in the Wikipedia. Immediately after I uploaded them they were deleted by a user who claimed they were not encyclopedias. Strange and embarrassing for Wikipedia. I am trying to find the pages since time and effort have been invested in them. How does Nitzan recover them and how can they be re-uploaded? Thanks

RUBAN9000 - the articles you wrote were added to Hebrew Wikipedia (which is the Hebrew version of Wikipedia), not Wikimedia Commons (which is a common repository for files that used by Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects), hence it is better to ask the question in the relevant page he:ויקיפדיה:דלפק ייעוץ (it is easier to communicate in Hebrew than here). If you have any additional question or if you would like to continue this discussion please don't hesitate to raise it there.
To answer your question - the pages weren't written as Encyclopedic articles but as memorial pages (born,... learned ..., died...), without explaining what they did that make them important or famous. Encyclopedia articles most pass minimal criteria of notability (or what makes them famous/important compared to other Rabis). If you are convinced theer good reasons and sources for that - please ask in he:ויקיפדיה:דלפק ייעוץ to restore the pages, so you can continue to work on them from the point it was deleted and add that essential information. How to use template

I've created pattern for handball team (Kit_body_croaway.png) and I don't know how to put in team kit (croatia woman handball national team). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leonardvz (talk • contribs) 17:28, 9 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@Leonardvz: Hi, and welcome. What article is this for? How is the kit represented on articles for similar teams? The templates for doing that are specific to particular projects, you you are best off asking at the help desks on those projects.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:39, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Article is: Croatia_women_national_handball_team. I've used patterns for arms and shorts and everything was ok accept for body. Leonardvz (talk) 17:53, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

@Leonardvz: I see, you should have been writing specifically about en:Croatia women's national handball team and en:Template:Football kit, rather than being vague. How is the body of the away shirt of a player on the Croatia women's national handball team supposed to look? I moved File:Kit body redsquareshalf.png for you, so now {{Football kit/pattern|body|_redsquareshalf}} works on enwiki, though _smallredsquaresbottomquarter might be more accurate.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:21, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Photo posting approval

I am being blocked from posting a portrait of my grandmother that I own on her Wikipedia listing. I clicked the box saying that it's my content, but I was still blocked. What's the secret to overcoming this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SusanMJain (talk • contribs) 20:55, 9 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@SusanMJain: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a pdf image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of pdf images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a pdf image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any raster image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:36, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Can't attach original picture

Hello, I've been trying to attach my personal image but for some reasons I get this: ,,We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

It's a portrait of the person about who the page is being created. Thank you for your help:)

Best Regards, Domante Purtokaite — Preceding unsigned comment added by DomaPurt (talk • contribs) 14:06, 10 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@DomaPurt: Hi, and welcome. — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:58, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Uploading a Media File

I would like to upload an image (Figure 2.1 Part 1) from a publicly available report (World Happiness Report 2020) to the commons. The report contains the following message regarding reproducing the work: "This publication may be reproduced using the following reference: Helliwell, John F., Richard Layard, Jeffrey Sachs, and Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, eds. 2020. World Happiness Report 2020. New York: Sustainable Development Solutions Network." I cannot see any other information regarding copyright restrictions etc. but assume I can upload it given the above declaration. So, my question is which of the reasons can/should I give to upload it, e.g. Creative Commons attributions??? Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 10:45, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello Shirt58, thanks for letting us know. I tagged the file as a copyvio and should be deleted by an admin shortly. If you found other copyright violations here, you can easily tag them as a copyvio with AjaxQuickDelete, if you have JavaScript enabled. The gadget should be enabled by default, but if it's not, it can easily be turned on in the Gadgets section of your preferences. The gadget adds links on the sidebar, and in this case, you can see a "Report copyright violation" link. When clicked, it will prompt you for the reason why it is a copyvio, and when you proceed, it will automatically tag the file as a copyvio and notify the uploader. pandakekok9 11:02, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Data Source of Map

Hi, I am new here and hope I found the right place to post my question. I would like to know which data source has been used to create this map: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2020_Polish_presidential_election_-_2nd_round_results.svg Is the information included somewhere and I overlooked it? Duplicate User

Hi,

I have two users, JonGlittenberg and JonGlittenberg2. I believe the original JonGlittenberg account is linked to an email address I no longer use. Is there a way to merge both accounts into JonGlittenberg with the jglitten[AT]yahoo.com email address? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JonGlittenberg2 (talk • contribs) 00:20, 11 December 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @JonGlittenberg2: I don't think they can actually be merged (though I'm ready to stand corrected). It would really confuse things in terms of page histories.
  • I suggest you stop using the older account, and turn your user page for that account into a soft or hard redirect to the user page for your current account. Similarly for the user talk page. If that doesn't cover your concerns, please be clear about what else you would want to address. - Jmabel ! talk 00:24, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
@JonGlittenberg and JonGlittenberg2: Hi, and welcome. There is a way, please see m:Steward requests/Username changes.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:28, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
Please don't spread misinformation. Global account merges have long been deemed unstable since 2016, and therefore is impossible to do so without breaking anything. @JonGlittenberg2: Jmabel's suggestion is the only workaround unfortunately. Your current and original accounts were created before 2014, which means even if global account merges are currently enabled, there's a risk that it could result in a broken merged account. If you want to edit under the original name with the edits of your current account, you can request a username usurp at the link Jeff provided. It will take a month before you get renamed to the original name though. pandakekok9 02:35, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Series of photos with a doubtful own work claim

I flagged a photo as lacking permission because a user (going by the same name as the subject depicted) had uploaded it as their own work, but EXIF data indicates a different photographer took the picture, as is unsurprising to anyone looking at it. I checked the user’s uploads and in fact they all look unlikely to be bona fide self-portraits, but only that first image clearly marks someone else as the photographer. How should I proceed here? Thank you. Innisfree987 (talk) 02:36, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

@Innisfree987: Good catch. I nominated all of the files for deletion, and you can see the deletion request here. pandakekok9 05:55, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: , ah, thanks so much—I’ll know for next time that this can go to deletion process, and that it’s possible to list multiple files together. Still learning the ropes—appreciate the assistance and guidance! Innisfree987 (talk) 06:38, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
@Innisfree987: You're welcome. Note that even if it's more convenient to list multiple files together in one request, there are cases where it's better to separate them into multiple requests, such as if the files are significantly different to each other (even if the uploader or category is the same). At the end, it depends on your call on which way is easier to review the files. pandakekok9 06:41, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: , ah yes, can imagine such a scenario. Got it—will exercise judgment accordingly. Just good to know it’s possible to list together when the whole row like this adds to the concern. Innisfree987 (talk) 06:47, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Looks like a copyright violation. Ruslik0 (talk) 10:17, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Harishree123: and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Unfortunately I agree with Ruslik0. From the link you provided - follow the option to visit the website where the image actually appears. A good tip is to go to the very bottom of webpages where it often states the copyright status. In this case it clearly states: "© 2020 - Indian Television Website Maintained by Blogger Anish K.S". However, if websites are silent on this the default position is that it is copyrighted - see COM:NETCOPYVIO. What you need to look for is an explicit statement that content can be freely reused, often under a specific license. If you find this you can check whether it is compatible by reading Commons:Licensing. Thanks. -- Crep1711 (talk) 11:01, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Is it appropriate to use your own artwork?

Hello! I want to use my own art as an illustration, however, there's a question I'm not really sure in. The art is supposed to illustrate an article about a real person, who lived quite a long time ago (12th century) and there's not any evidences about his appearance, so the latter is fully based on my own vision. I couldn't find any information, not only about my problem, but the usage of your own artwork (excluding graphics, schemes, charts, etc.) as well. So, is it appropriate to use this kind of images?

Thanks for attention, Kiyokosan (talk) 17:23, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

@Kiyokosan: Hi, and welcome. Are you notable as an artist?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:36, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
"Notable" meaning at the level where there is a Wikipedia article about you, or close enough that there probably should be. I know it can be hard to judge about oneself. - Jmabel ! talk 21:13, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
Hello, @Jmabel: ! Thank you for your response. No, I'm just a hobbyist. If I understand you, only notable artists are allowed to illustrate articles with their own works? That's not a problem, but in ruwiki I saw some examples of art being not only made by hobbyists, but uploaded a few years ago and which have never been removed or deleted (like there, and that's a really confusing thing. Kiyokosan (talk) 14:19, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
There is a fair chance that if your work is good enough that people on one of the Wikipedias agree that they are useful to illustrate a Wikipedia article, then it's probably fine here, but in a bit of a gray zone. As long as you won't take offense if your images get deleted, feel free to go for it. I'd suggest doing no more than a dozen at first, leave it for a few months to see if they are nominated for deletion and if so how that goes, so you don't find yourself doing 100 images & having them deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 09:46, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Overwrote a different image with a new one - how to fix

It appears that the current File:Sheriff Grady Judd.jpg was uploaded by overwriting a completely different image. I don't know what the proper solution is for this, whether it is to delete the existing file a re-upload, re-upload the old file, etc. Can someone more knowledgeable than me assist with this? @Manautoua: As second uploader, please read COM:OVERWRITE.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:39, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
@Ergo Sum: My usual approach here would be to revert the picture to the older version (using the link in the file history table) and drop a {{Dont overwrite}} template on the user talk page of the user who overwrote it. I don't usually worry about requesting deletion of the intermediate version, but if it's an egregious copyright violation that might be justified. --bjh21 (talk) 18:02, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
@Ergo Sum: I usually bring files to COM:HMSR because they tend to be overwrite by anonymous users or newbie editors and in contravention of COM:OVERWRITE.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:53, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
It appears the named source updated their photo, and the new one was copied here. The given license is PD-USGov, which is wrong. It might be PD-FLGov, but the source website does not appear to be a Florida government website, but a non-profit trade organization. It does appear on https://www.polksheriff.org/ as well though, which seems a more governmental website. But yes, the preference is to upload any new file separately, so both are available, if the copyright license is valid. Carl Lindberg (talk) 18:55, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Can I remove the American license?

There's a logo for the company "iText" I want to use on the Dutch Wiki. The logo undisputedly uses text and/or simple geometric shapes and is therefore part of the public domain. However, I can't use this file on Dutch wikipedia, since it has an American licensing attribution or some sort, that makes it unable to use outside the English wikipedia. Furthermore

  • the logo was uploaded by the company's founder and owner Bruno Lowagie under the username BLowagie
  • The logo is tagged as public domain
  • Itext is a registered company in Belgium
  • The logo supposedly has no "author" attributed, yet the author's name (1T3XT Bvba) can be read in the description

Is there any chance i can change the license attribution so I can use it on the Dutch wikipedia? Tomaatje12 (talk) 19:14, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Music scores

When is the Wikimedia Foundation going to address the music score issue that makes all LilyPond music scores read an error message? Yes, I know why the scores are down, because of security issues with LilyPond. However, the error has not been fixed ever since July, and it leaves massive lacunae in Wikipedia articles about music (see, for example, the English Wikipedia article about musical scales). I sure hope the Wikimedia Foundation is doing everything they can to fix it; if they are not already, they seriously ought to make up for lost time and invest lots of effort into doing so. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.76.95.136 (talk) 21:37, 13 December 2020‎ (UTC)

Uh, they want/"need" to create an account, so they are probably aware of that already. What they need is how to create an account, which is just a click away. I'm not sure how the heck they missed the "Create account" link on the very top of the page... Me thinks if they so easily miss/ignored that very obvious link, they'd probably ignore our policies as well and end up blocked. @IP: Wiki in general might not be for you. File:Chief Wilton "Willie" Littlechild.jpg - a digitally altered screengrab from a CC-BY 3.0 video

Hi there. I found this CC-BY 3.0 video by the United Nations on their official Human Rights YouTube channel.

Since derivatives are allowed under CC-BY, I took a screengrab at 00:57 and digitally removed the subtitles and title card that were partially covering the Chief so the photo can serve as a good biographical head shot. (see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Willie_Littlechild&diff=993849371&oldid=993836954&diffmode=source)

I want to know what's the best way to attribute this work. How do I correctly state authorship? Are there templates I should use to note the derivation? That it's a screengrab of a video? My edits are slightly non-trivial, do I need to attribute myself? How does that line up with the original author?

Thanks for any help on this! F3ndot (talk) 20:54, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

I think the way you did it is perfectly acceptable. Personally I think any alterations made by the uploader should be noted in the source or author fields. Cheers, pandakekok9 06:03, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Hugo Weriand.jpg

Person died 100 years ago, in 1920, when foto was taken. Oseba je umrla leta 1920, ko je bila izdana osmrtnica.

--Shabicht (talk) 20:02, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

@Shabicht: the death of the subject is irrelevant to questions of copyright. If the photo is anonymous, how can you know the photographer died more than 70 years ago? Do you know in what country the photo was created or first published? (Having a typeset caption would seem to imply that the image was scanned from a printed work.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:33, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
I have adjusted the licence to PD-EU-anonymous. The photograph is obviously of either Imperial Austrian or Italian origin since the seat of House Windisch-Graetz in today's Slovenia was Austrian until 1918, and then Italian until 1945. De728631 (talk) 01:15, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, @De728631. The printing is evidently Austrian-oriented, considering the language and the use of fraktur (text or blackletter) body type, but if the image falls under Italian jurisdiction, as a “simple” photo-portrait its copyright would presumably have expired in 1941. It would be nice to have information about the source publication, but it’s not necessary.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:57, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

University logo upload

Hello! I work for a University and want to make sure that our current logo on our Wikipedia page(s) is updated to our NEW logo that we rolled out earlier this year, in order to help make sure that our brand presence across the internet is up-to-date. Of course, our logo is copyrighted content, but as owners of the mark, we want it to be posted to ensure our brand is properly represented. How do we properly upload the image to makes sure it is done so within Wikipedia guidelines and remains displayed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SEMORedhawks (talk • contribs) 22:55, 16 December 2020‎ (UTC)

If it is copyrighted, the short answer is "not here". You would have to either licence the image as Public Domain or under an acceptable Creative Commons licence (see COM:Licensing), or upload it directly to Wikpedia as a "fair use" image. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:14, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
@SEMORedhawks: Hi, and welcome. Please publish the new logo and your permission for it on your website or social media or send them via OTRS. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:16, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
@SEMORedhawks: User:Jeff G. is presuming you want to free-license it and place it on Commons; as User:Rodhullandemu remarked rather telegraphically, Wikipedias in various languages each have their own policies for non-free use of images on that Wikipedia (without Commons getting involved). In particular, the English-language Wikipedia allows this.
If you do free-license it as an institution, you (as an individual) will probably want to tag it with {{Trademark}} when you upload. - Jmabel ! talk 00:50, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: @Jeff G.: After reading more, I think that simply uploading to the English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F is the right route for me. However, how do I upload only to the English Wikipedia in order to make that edit to the associated pages? SEMORedhawks (talk) 15:18, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
@SEMORedhawks: en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard gives four options for uploading directly on that project: Click here to start the Upload Wizard on top in the middle; Files for upload process; Plain form for local uploads; and Old guided form (the latter three in the right column under "Wikipedia"). Copyright Issues

Hello,

I recentrly tryed to upload an imagen to the SARS-CoV-2 page and it got flagged for copyright.

This is an imagen i made myself inspired by the mentioned article. this article's FULL TEXT is available for everybody on various sites (as PubMed, link bellow)

I understand this is an open article, and i can get proves of the main author authorising me to use this image in his noun.

There is any possibility to remove this copyright flag in any way??

Thanks

Uploading pictures taken professionally?

Hello,

I have only ever uploaded pictures I took myself so I am unsure about the procedure for professionally taken pictures. I am a member of an organisation which has an article on English Wikipedia and 5 other language Wikipedias. So I understand that as a member I have a conflict of interest so am not allowed to edit the article. There are no photos on the article at the moment. But I assume it is OK for me to upload a picture of the organisation's leaders here if I have the right permissions and go through the correct procedures? When the organisation was formed recently pictures of the leaders were taken and published in the press. I need to check but I assume the pics were taken by a professional photographer and distributed as part of a press release. I am not an official of the organisation. So if we want to upload the pictures here what do we need to do please?

Also I just saw the question about the uni logo above. So is it best to upload our organisation's logo here and mark it with "trademark"?

Chidgk1 (talk) 13:33, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

@Chidgk1: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer or an organization official license it on their website or social media, or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:45, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

@NateNate60: The signature doesn't seem to be complex enough to be copyrighted, so yes you can upload it here. Use {{PD-signature}} with "US" as your parameter to indicate its copyright status (which is public domain). Cheers, pandakekok9 02:57, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Need to remove my email from photos descriptions

Kinda new here, so I uploaded some photos to Flickr under free creative-commons licenses (minus commercial use), in the photo description I put my email address for anyone who wants to contact me about usage.

I guess because of the CC licenses I applied, they got automatically uploaded to wikimedia commons, and my email in the description got imported too. Now my email address is all over wikimedia commons, and I kinda don't want that. I changed it on Flickr to remove them, but it remains on wiki. I made this account in hopes of being able to change that, but I'm not sure where to even start.

Can anyone shed some light on how to help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeshaheen1 (talk • contribs)

You can just search for your e-mail and remove it. Ruslik0 (talk) 20:28, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
  1. @Mikeshaheen1: You can find all your uploads at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Mikeshaheen1&ilshowall=1
  2. If you install (or otherwise use) VisualFileChange (VFC), then on the abovementioned page you can click "Visual File Change", which will show in the left nav (unless you are using an unusual skin, in which case your guess is as good as mine as to where it is)?
  3. Accept the default there (which is to base VFC's scope on the user upload page where you clicked).
  4. I don't see any obvious email address on the file page to be edited, so I don't know what you want to edit; in case you've already dealt with this, it would have been nice to come here & say so, it would have saved me the time of writing out detailed instructions. Quickest way to do that would be {{resolved|~~~~}}; you'll know next time you ask something. I will put that on here now, but please feel free to remove it if I'm wrong.
  5. Good set of pics, especially File:George Floyd Miami Protest, June 7, 2020 42.jpg, so you are completely forgiven for that last thing! - Jmabel ! talk 16:54, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: thanks for the detailed instructions, problem was the photos were uploaded automatically before I made this Wikimedia account (made it just to post more) so they didn't have a username behind them, but I managed to find the gallery here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:George_Floyd_protests_in_Miami,_Florida_on_May_30,_2020 and fixed them one by one. Thanks for the kind words and your help :) I'm not familiar with how to use all the script and code on this site but I'm slowly getting there — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeshaheen1 (talk • contribs) 13:22, 21 December 2020‎ (UTC)
    • @Mikeshaheen1: Ooh, you made much more work for yourself than needed: VFC also works on a search result, so you could have searched on the email address and otherwise done what I suggest above.
    • By the way, it looks like you are also not familiar with how to sign your posts here; please put "~~~~" after the text of your post, and the wiki software will turn that into a signature and timestamp. "~~~" for signature with no timestamp; "~~~~~" for just a timestamp.

How can I upload a new version of a file?

I have recently updated this file with a new and updated version using the Parliament diagram tool but, the problem is when I click on the 'Upload a new version of this file' link and insert the newly updated SVG file the upload wizard gives me a warning that 'The upload is an exact duplicate of an older version of this file'.

The reason why I don't want to upload it with a different file name is because I am uploading a technically improved version of the same file. Doing so would mean that the file usage on other wikis would be irrelevant and only the English version would be up to date. PLEASE HELP.

The two user names in red are: Cpaulwinstanley and Spectrafocus. The first is my name the secound being the Animation technique.

When I try search wether they have been deleted I find myself confused.

[http://www.spectrafocus.ca This crude website will give you a bit of an idea of what I'm developing.

Well, I'm not sure how much more I should add. Other issues can wait to see if I can resolve the basic ones.

Thanks very much for your time and patience.

I just had a question as to why my upload keeps getting marked for deletion - File:Poster design for PIROUETTE (2020).jpg It links to the Wikipedia page - Draft:Pirouette_(film)

Which is currently awaiting re-review, am I uploading the file incorrectly?

Looking forward to your response! Thanks, pete

Uploading missing files from Panoramio

Could somebody help me upload several files from Panoramio? I'm editing without an account, and lately I've been busy adding categories (and geolocation, if possible) to a bunch of photos from a remote part of Russia. They were uploaded by one serjserg at Panoramio, and I've been adding them to Category:Photos from Panoramio ID 2850843. However, not all photos by this Panoramio user were transferred here; most of the missing have little or no educational value, but a couple do (including possibly the only free photo of a particular church). I would be grateful if somebody uploads them here, and I'll take care of categories, geolocation etc.:

I have started uploading the files. De728631 (talk) 20:49, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
✓ Done except for two files. File:Untitled - panoramio - serjserg (22).jpg, however, corresponds to https://web.archive.org/web/20161031153443/http://www.panoramio.com/photo/25126516. It was deleted multiple times at Commons for being out of project scope, so I'm not going to upload it now. I'm also not sure about ttps://web.archive.org/web/20161024075740/http://www.panoramio.com/photo/20717185. The person in the foreground makes the image rather useless and prone to the same argument about being out of scope. The other files are at

De728631, thanks a lot!! I had doubts myself about those two. The one with the girl shows a village in the background; could be a candidate for cropping... And the one with the guy could be a good illustration for Category:Haymaking in Russia, which sadly lacks modern photos. 91.219.24.115 22:13, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
Could you also please also update {{Panoramioreview}} tags? 91.219.24.115 22:18, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
The {{Panoramioreview}} tags need to be approved by other reviewers. We're not supposed to review our own uploads. I think I'll request undeletion of File:Untitled - panoramio - serjserg (22).jpg though, so we can illustrate the haymaking process. De728631 (talk) 15:50, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Update an image on a wikipedia article

Hi everyone,

I would like to update an image on a wikipedia article. The article is https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conf%C3%A9d%C3%A9ration_africaine_de_football and the map used in the article has been updated by "African Football Confederation (CAF)" itself as you can see here in https://fr.cafonline.com/member-associations/ .

My question is can I take a snapshot (using snipping tool) of the map used on the CAF website and integrate it to wikimedia common ?

Thank you in advance for your assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Houssam.bench (talk • contribs)

Fotowettbewerbe Alleen und Demolitions

Hallo,

How do I add this table to my Wiki

Hello,

So I am currently writing a Wikipedia Article on Torus Fractures - the most common fracture in children - and in all other Fracture Wiki's, the table in the image I have attached seems to appear. I was wondering how I could add this exact table to my own Wiki.

Many Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apaul291003 (talk • contribs) 16:44, 21 December 2020‎ (UTC)

@Apaul291003: This is the Commons help desk, this question is more suited to the help desk at Wikipedia, but the answer is to just add {{Fracture}} at the bottom of the page. Dylsss (talk) 16:56, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Why does my Page keep getting Deleted?

Hey Guys,

This is Wikimedia Commons, where we host free media files. We don't have articles like Wikipedia, so you might want to ask over there. A common reason for new articles getting deleted, however, is that the subject is either not notable, or the text was too promotional. Per Wikipedia's rules you are also not supposed to write about a subject you are strongly affiliated with. If your company is notable, somebody else will write about it in due time. Please see also en:WP:COI and en:WP:ORG. De728631 (talk) 23:11, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello Wikimedia Commons,

Hello there. File:Société des amis des noirs février 1790.JPG is in the public domain in the US and most likely in the rest of the world. You also do not need to attribute anyone when you use public domain works. De728631 (talk) 23:15, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

I use category intersect to search within categories for public domain images. It saves time when looking through larger categories. Definitonally I see no difference. @JaeWright: yes in principle, but the licence requires attribution, which could be inconvenient for many, or even most, applications of a logo—easy enough on a web page, not so much elsewhere. Are you prepared to put a credit line on every piece of stationery, signage, apparel, &c., where your logo might appear? You could try asking the author for permission to use the element without credit, but otherwise I’d recommend using only public-domain or CC0 artwork, for the greatest freedom.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:45, 26 December 2020 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure the issue is on your end, because it is fine for me, but there might be a proxy server between you and Wikimedia Commons that didn't get updated. News TV screenshots

Hi, I want to update the 7/7 bombings article with a reliable source regarding the communication problems, this bit:

"Other mobile phone networks also reported failures, causing for example BBC Radio London reporters to use landline phones[citation needed] and Sky News to use the station ticker for displaying messages from persons trying to contact their relatives[citation needed]."

A recording (accessible here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjW_TPv3y8w ) shows the Sky News ticker displaying such infos multiple times (i.e. around 2:53:00). I know I can't really source to this YT video, but maybe I can screenshot a frame and put it on Commons? Thanks. Borowiecki.km (talk) 00:11, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

The Sky News broadcast is presumably copyrighted by Sky News, unless you have specific reason that can demonstrate otherwise. A screenshot of it would be under their copyright, and thus could not be uploaded to Commons. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:22, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
The YT thing is presumably a copyright violation in its own right, but assuming you have every reason to believe it is an accurate reproduction, cite Sky News, indicate the YT video as your means of having seen the Sky News content; give it as a "convenience link" and indicate the relevant places in it down to the second; etc. Not a pretty citation, but valid. Also: if you need a particular still in the article on en-wiki you can upload it entirely on en-wiki on a fair use basis. Leave Commons out of the equation. - Jmabel ! talk 01:57, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Please note that we usually do not accept text files unless they are educational works that come with a free licence or are out of copyright. Your request sounds like you are trying to upload a Wikipedia article at Commons, but that is not what Commons is meant for. We primarily collect media files like photographs, graphics and videos. Written text of your own making should be entered at a Wikipedia in your native language. Vandalism in file currently used on en-wiki main page

Hi, if any Commons admins are around, please could you remove the line of vandalism from File:Louie-Nunn.jpg, which was inserted here? The image is currently used on the en-wiki main page and is therefore protected on Commons, so I can't fix this myself. Cheers Amakuru (talk) 16:42, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

@Whippersnapper1983: Welcome to Commons! Since you've only just uploaded File:Evgeny .jpg, you can mark it for speedy deletion. Visit File:Evgeny .jpg, choose "Edit", and add {{G7}} at the top of the edit box and choose "Publish changes". This marks the file for Commons:speedy deletion, so an administrator is likely to delete it in a day or two. --bjh21 (talk) 17:17, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

Unable to upload/Insert photo into musician/artist page

I'm helping my musician son Will Rast create a Wikipedia page. When I've tried to upload photos of him to insert into the page, Wikipedia rejects them as uncertain to be allowed. He owns many photos taken of him either player music or while on tour around the world. How can I get permission to upload pix?

Thanks,

Here's the page draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bobrast/Will_Rast_Draft

Hello. Please note that the copyright of photos is usually held by the original photographer and not by the person depicted. So owning a copy of a portrait does not automatically allow your son to grant anybody else a free licence to use it. In such cases we require a copy of the written contract that transferred the copyright from the photographer to your son. Please see COM:OTRS for instructions on sending an email with the relevant documents. I should also note that Wikipedia discourages writing articles about yourself or persons you are closely affiliated with. Please read WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIO. Anyone who can read Chinese?

File:ECUT logo.png claims it's freely licenced. The source page shows a copyright notice but is the text surrounding the notice a copyright licence? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:37, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

What happened?--Kai3952 (talk) 22:53, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
What happened is that I needed someone to read a file page to see if there is a free licence on it. There wasn't, so an admin deleted the corresponding file on Commons. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:12, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

How is my photo shown as non-copyright ?

I am the author of file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_President,_Shri_Pranab_Mukherjee_presenting_the_Padma_Shri_Award_to_Smt._Aruna_Mohanty,_at_the_Civil_Investiture_Ceremony,_at_Rashtrapati_Bhavan,_in_New_Delhi_on_April_13,_2017.jpg The image is a restricted document only for use within India by authorized news media and does not extend to third party materials. So how it is written as "all users are provided a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, adapt, publish (either in original, or in adapted and/or derivative forms), translate, display, add value, and create derivative works (including products and services), for all lawful commercial and non-commercial purposes, and for the duration of existence of such rights over the data or information." ? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2405:201:4004:705A:EC4E:E69C:B272:FD7D (talk) 17:26, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. Which part of the information currently presented at File:The President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presenting the Padma Shri Award to Smt. Aruna Mohanty, at the Civil Investiture Ceremony, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi on April 13, 2017.jpg is wrong?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:50, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
The phrase "all users are provided a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, adapt, publish etc." refers to a mandate of the National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP) of Government of India that were "generated using public funds by various agencies of the Government of India". This photograph was found on a website of the Press Information Bureau on behalf of President's Secretariat, Government of India, so it is reasonable to assume that said Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy applies to it, too. De728631 (talk) 19:26, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
The term "data" as used in the policy refers to geospatial data which is under the Department of Science and Technology. The Department of Science and Technology does not set the copyright policy for President of India which is at https://presidentofindia.nic.in/copyright-policy.htm . Also I do not any find the words "worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, adapt, publish etc" in the NDSAP — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2405:201:4004:705A:EC4E:E69C:B272:FD7D (talk) 22:25, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
Well, the policy (starting at page 93) states the following (my emphasis):
  • "The National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP) is designed so as to apply to all sharable non-sensitive data available either in digital or analog forms but generated using public funds by various Ministries / Departments / subordinate offices / organizations / agencies of Government of India" It is apparently not limited to the Department of Science and Technology. Also the definition for "data" is given as "Data means a representation of information, numerical compilations, ... documents, facts, maps, images ... in digital and/or analog form."
  • Article 5.: "Scope of this Policy. The National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy will apply to all data and information created, generated, ... by various Ministries / Departments / Organizations / Agencies and Automomous bodies."
  • Article 11. "Pricing. Pricing of data, if any, would be decided by the data owners and as per the government policies. All Ministries / Departments will upload the pricing policy of the data under the registered and restricted access ..." Apparently this means that only data from restricted access will be priced and all other data available on unrestricted platforms are free.
Note also that the image was not taken from the website of the President of India but from the Press Information Bureau whose copyright policy says that "Material featured on this website may be reproduced free of charge and there is no need for any prior approval for using the content. The permission to reproduce this material shall not extend to any third-party material." It seems that the uploader at Commons interpreted "third-party material" as material not coming from the government of India in general. @Gazoth: Your input here would be welcome. De728631 (talk) 23:42, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
The NDSAP clearly states it is only applicable to Open Data uploaded to the OGD platform whose meta data is on data.gov.in. It is only accessible to specified users who are licenced under OGD. The image was never release in open format by President of India and it was first uploaded to the Gallery of President of India website in a proprietary format where it continues to be in copyright assertion. The PIB has also never uploaded the image under open data format with open licence and has never relinquished the copyright of this image under NDSAP. Under allocation of business rules of Govt of India, Department of Science and Technology is nobody to frame policy on photographic images of President of India to violate our copyright. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2405:201:4004:705A:EC4E:E69C:B272:FD7D (talk) 01:33, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
The PIB has removed all those images from its websites which violate copyright of President and Prime Minister of India. So the licence, if there was any valid licence in the first place, has lapsed and is withdrawn under clause 7 of the NDSAP — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2405:201:4004:705A:EC4E:E69C:B272:FD7D (talk) 01:39, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
OK, this may have an impact on a lot of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. I have now nominated this particular file for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:The President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presenting the Padma Shri Award to Smt. @2nd ABG: I have checked your upload. The map from WikiMapia comes with a "share-alike" licence. How to resolve unreconciled coordinates

Specifically at File:Vista da Monte 3.jpg and File:Vista da Monte 2.jpg. The phone coordinates were wrong so I added correct ones, but now it claims there is a "discrepancy". How can I make it go away? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:14, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

@Jo-Jo Eumerus: You also need to update the coordinates in the structured data tab of those files. De728631 (talk) 17:08, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
@De728631: It is totally unclear how to do this. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:32, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jo-Jo Eumerus: Above the "Summary" headline there is the Caption field and further above are two blue tabs "File information" and "Structured data". Click on the "structured data" tab and scroll down to "coordinates of the point of view". You can then "edit" that section. First of all you need to remove the old coordinates by clicking the trash bin icon. Then you enter a new pair of coordinates where it says "latitude, longitude" and click "add". Then you "publish" your changes. De728631 (talk) 17:40, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
OK, finally figured this out. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 18:19, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

2020 U.S. Presidential Election Treemaps

Hello, I was wondering if it was possible for me to make treemaps for each state and DC for their presidential election results in 2020. I noticed that all of the ones for the 2016 election have the same format, so I was wondering is there is some template I need to follow. I also know that there has been controversy around the election results, so I was curious if this impacts my ability to make graphics for the results. Using images uploaded to Finnish wiki on the English-language one

Hi,

There are a few images, such as this, uploaded to the Finnish Wikipedia, which have not been transferred to Commons. I would like to use them on an article in the English Wikipedia, but a) I don't know if that's allowed, and b) how to do it.

The images are under copyright, but according to the Finnish law, they are allowed to be used in artistic review or scientific publications (so says a note on the page).

Any help gratefully received! TIA, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:32, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

@DoubleGrazing: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer and artist license it on their websites or social media, or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:31, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Original Flickr image has a watermark so I cropped it out

Original Flickr image has a watermark so I cropped it out. The problem is that there is no one to review. Could anyone please tell me what can be done? Thank you--Kai3952 (talk) 13:26, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

@Kai3952: Is {{LicenseReview}} broken?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:50, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
I uploaded 45 images and checked the copyright status of images from Flickr, but I don't know why the licensing information states: "The copyright status of the image was undeterminable by the bot, and requires human attention. If you are an administrator or a trusted reviewer, you can review the image and remove the tag."

--Kai3952 (talk) 16:06, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Whenever you don't upload the original file from Flickr, the review bot does not pass the licence but refers the file to manual review. So crops and other derivative works don't get the automated approval. De728631 (talk) 18:10, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
What do you mean? Can we upload photos with watermarks? If the answer is no, then the problem should not be me. I need someone to help me review the licensing information. Thanks.--Kai3952 (talk) 06:54, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
I was trying to explain to you why the automated review failed. Of course you can upload altered versions of an original Flickr photo without watermarks, but then you will always need human reviewers. Actually the reviewing seems to be in progress. De728631 (talk) 21:14, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
I know that. But some authors will upload their photos with watermarks to Flickr which are usually very good photos for quality. I have to crop the watermark out before upload at Commons. This is where the problem lies.--Kai3952 (talk) 00:23, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
@Kai3952: You are allowed to upload the original from Flickr, wait for the bot review it automatically, and then use CropTool to crop-overwrite it or overwrite it with your own crop.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:03, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
If I do as you said then the photo has a watermark before it is overwritten.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:51, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Yes, but why is that a problem?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:03, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
I don’t know why that is, but Commons does not allow photos with the watermark. Please, is there someone who can explain me why we can't upload photos with the "watermark". Thanks.--Kai3952 (talk) 14:39, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
@Kai3952: I think you're wrong when you say that "Commons does not allow photos with the watermark". Commons would certainly prefer files without watermarks (because they're more useful like that), and a watermark could be so obtrusive as to make the file useless (and hence liable to deletion) but it's generally fine to upload a watermarked version and then immediately overwrite it with an un-watermarked one. If some part of Commons' documentation says that watermarks aren't allowed at all then please say where it is so it can be corrected (or correct it yourself). --bjh21 (talk) 17:31, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
If you say "so obtrusive", how obtrusive the watermark is? Look at this photo. There is a white watermark in the lower right corner and I'm not sure if it is so obtrusive.--Kai3952 (talk) 23:20, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
Perfectly acceptable, but we might crop it if it doesn't mess up the aesthetics to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 04:24, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
@Kai3952: I agree with Jmabel. The point is that the file is still useful even with the watermark, and the watermark can easily be cropped out without making the file useless. --bjh21 (talk) 17:52, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
Bjh21, De728631, Jeff G., Jmabel, I'm glad I had the chance to learn here and I'm grateful for every comment left–thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:17, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

The same photo: 吊腳樓

file 1.
file 2.

Qb7244 has uploaded file 1. Looks to be from the same photo shoot as file 2. Should we merge or delete one of them?--Kai3952 (talk) 10:46, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

  • @Kai3952: File:台中市「吊腳樓」.jpg is higher resolution, so I'd mark the other with {{Duplicate}} (see template page for parameters), which will eventually get it deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 14:51, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
    • To be honest with you, I have no experience in this regard. Furthermore, Reke reprimanded me not to make trouble for him and after many communications with him over several months, I promised him (see: here) that I wouldn't delete any files, so I can't mark the other with {{Duplicate}}.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:26, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
      • @Kai3952: I'll just do it. This is normal, simple stuff, though, and with your amount of experience here and your high level of (mostly good) activity, I personally would appreciate if next time this comes up, you try to learn how to do it (and to do it right) so admins aren't stuck doing other people's basic tasks.
Have you ever read the documentation at Template:Duplicate? Is there anything specific there that you find unclear? - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
I also would love to learn how to get this process done, but the problem is not with me. Because I am being hounded by Reke at [11]. Until now, he still thinks me is a trouble (see: here) and never said what he wants from me. And not only that, but he personally attacked me, saying that I've got Asperger's syndrome, it doesn't matter how good my intentions are, I am not a good communicator. I don't know what his brain is thinking. I feel harassed by him because he wasted my time so much that I can't to learn how mark the file with {{Duplicate}}. I'm not complaining but hope someone can stop him soon.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:07, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Solomon203 publicly disclosed the content of my two e-mails. Who can help?

Please take a look at the first and the second. I don't know why Solomon203 discussed with Reke about my two e-mails. Because I never allowed Solomon203 to be publicly disclosed the content of my e-mails, and I didn't expect him to do that to me. If he doesn't want to respond to my e-mails, he can tell me or ignore me, but he didn't. Reke posted a message to my talk page on zh-wiki yesterday and he told me that he doesn't want to see anyone go to him for help again because of me. But I can't control others to talk with Reke. My e-mail is not harassment but ask for help. I just want more people to help me solve the issue of the COM:FOP Taiwan policy. In short, Solomon203 should tell me and should not publicly disclose the content of my two e-mails. Who can help?--Kai3952 (talk) 03:10, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

  • @Kai3952: Did you and Solomon203 have an overt agreement of confidentiality? If so this should be brought to AN/U. If not: apparently in the future you either need an overt agreement about confidentiality with this person or you need not to say anything to them privately that you would not want shared. - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
    • Why is a confidentiality agreement needed? Everyone knows that email itself is a closed space and intended for the recipient specified in message only. Therefore, regardless of whether or not I have a confidentiality agreement, Solomon203 should not disclose my e-mails to anyone.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:48, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
      • @Kai3952: No. It may have been bad judgment on their part, but I don't offhand know any country where there is a legal assumption of confidentiality in an email when you haven't even requested it (which I gather you didn't), and as far as I know, Commons does not have a policy to that effect either. This is basically why some people overtly assert confidentiality as part of their email signature.
I personally ask before quoting anyone who has sent me email that does not overtly say I may quote them, but arguably I'm being overpolite in doing so. I've had people be very surprised I bothered to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 01:53, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
I have had the following on my user page for a long time: Except items that I specifically solicit (at my sole discretion), I do not accept any unsolicited messages sent via PM, IM, or Email. If any such message is received, the sender acknowledges that: the message (including its source IP Address) will not be considered confidential or proprietary; I and my affiliates are under no obligation to keep it confidential; and I will have an unrestricted, irrevocable, world-wide, royalty free right to use, communicate, reproduce, publish, display, distribute, exploit, post, report, and/or ridicule it in any manner I choose.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:01, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
There is a law to protect one's email privacy in Taiwan, which is of Article 315 of the Offenses Against Privacy. If Commons does not have a policy to protect the email privacy, then I think that the content of my e-mails are not conditioned enough to seek legal action.--Kai3952 (talk) 18:05, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

    • @Jmabel: That it is the product of a government distributed for outside use. I’ll concede that I don’t know the copyright status of Baltimore City government works. However, an official photo of former Mayor Sheila Dixon is on Wiki under CC BY-SA 3.0. Is that a mistake? If it is, I’d be happy to find a newer photo that we can use. That was the primary goal, since Scott has grown his hair out quite significantly since the photo that was on his Wikipedia page was taken. Aresef (talk) 03:09, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: This one. It's credited as "own work," which I suppose is obviously incorrect. I ran a Tineye search and traced its earliest use to city websites. Again, if your ruling is I erred in uploading the Scott photo, I am not attached to it and am perfectly willing to find something else to use for his page.--Aresef (talk) 05:20, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
@Aresef: Only US Federal Government works and government works from a few select US states are automatically in the public domain. Maryland is not one of those states, so the image is non-free and copyrighted by default and cannot be used at Commons without permission. De728631 (talk) 15:48, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Could someone confirm I correctly licensed the image above? Thanks, P,TO 19104 (pls ping!) 19:58, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

I am not sure if I can create my own subpage

I'm here for nearly 4 years, but I did not make full use of my user page. I am not sure if I can create my own subpage. Do we have any definite usage guidelines or conventions about how use of user pages?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:32, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

@Kai3952: Please see Commons:User pages.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:46, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
I checked out the link above but it says:

The Commons community has rejected this guideline, policy, or process.

Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 21:15, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
@Kai3952 and Ottawahitech: Sorry, please see Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories instead.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:45, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for your helpful comments, and for pinging me. BTW (By The Way) even though the Commons Community has rejected the help page for Userpages, I intend to use it to construct such a page on another wmf-wiki that can use it IMO. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 08:37, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

  • @Kai3952: I have quite a few subpages for my user page. Go to my main user page and click in the bulleted list near the top. - Jmabel ! talk 01:55, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
    • Actually, what is difficult is that I don't have my own office space for the tools I needed to get my work done. I always feel inefficient whenever I am working on a task or categorizing for files. In addition, I needed to create a subpage for record my problems and solutions so that I can learn how to do better next time. Because I still be quite inexperienced in many aspects of Wikimedia Commons.--Kai3952 (talk) 05:47, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

File deletion mechanism unavailable

I wanted to nominate a file for deletion but the option to do that is not visible, perhaps because I'm using a mobile phone. I selected the "request desktop site" option in my browser but the option to nominate was still not visible.

File for deletion: File:Templeogue in December.jpg

Reason: This is a small, low resolution thumbnail-sized picture of poor quality harvested from Flickr which appears to have little value, which is not in use anywhere, and the poor quality of the image suggests it might never be used for anything. The description of what is shown is vague and unspecific.

Perhaps someone would care to perform the nomination on my behalf, copying and pasting the reason stated above. Thank you.

Adding a second file for nomination for deletion:

File:Cypress Downs Dublin 6.jpg

Reason: This picture is of poor quality and appears to have little value, it is not in use anywhere, and its quality suggests it might never be used for anything. The description of what is shown is vague and unspecific. O'Dea (talk) 01:40, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

  • @O'Dea: We don't usually delete pictures just because they are not great. To do so would make for a lot of ill will among contributors, and gain us very little. If someone uploaded several hundred rather bad pictures and few good ones, we'd probably propose a mass deletion, but this is probably not worth your time or mine.
  • For the technical side of your question, please see Commons:Deletion requests#Starting requests. - Jmabel ! talk 04:36, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: I explained that I couldn't do it myself in my first sentence, above, then I went on to explain why. O'Dea (talk) 17:11, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
    • @O'Dea: I don't use a smartphone at all myself, but are you describing a limitation in an app, or in the browser? In particular, are you saying that you don't have the option to use a browser on your phone and go to the same URL that would be used on a PC? Or that this button is for some reason not available when you do that last? At this point I'm afraid I'm asking you for help (in understanding what exactly is the limitation in proposing a deletion when you are on a phone). - Jmabel ! talk 01:42, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: You directed me to "please see Commons:Deletion requests#Starting requests" (where I had already been before submitting my request for help here).
The trouble arises because the instruction at that link says, "You can nominate individual media files directly by going to the media description page and clicking on Nominate for deletion in the Tools menu on the left."
My computer is out of action at the moment so I'm limited to using my mobile phone. The functionality of Wikipedia is highly restricted on a phone. In other words, in this instance, "the Tools menu on the left" does not appear. It's simply not there.
There are many other functionalities of Wikipedia that are not visible/available on a mobile phone (e.g. moving a page, moving a file). The problem is widespread. (I am using the latest Firefox browser.) O'Dea (talk) 04:59, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
@O'Dea: On my Samsung Galaxy A20 (SM-A205U Build/QP1A.190711.020) phone with Android 10, in my preferred desktop view and landscape orientation, and using apps (Puffin Browser Free (v9.0.0.50263_10050263), Google Chrome (v87.0.4280.66), and Firefox (v84.1.2)), I see the same "Nominate for deletion" link as on my desktop or iPad (again, in my preferred desktop view and landscape orientation). I don't see it in mobile view or directly in portrait orientation (where it is hidden under the "Tools" button in the top right corner), except I do see it in portrait orientation in Firefox when logged out only (I haven't tried logged-out with the other browsers). Try using the desktop view (tap "Desktop" as the last word on the last line of any page here) and either landscape orientation or the "Tools" button in the top right corner of the portrait orientation.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:53, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
Commons:Deletion requests also describes how to do a deletion request manually without that tool. - Jmabel ! talk 06:02, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Replying to "Try using the desktop view (tap "Desktop" as the last word on the last line of any page.)"
Wow, I had no idea that tiny feature was buried at the bottom of every page, and I've been editing here for 16 years. That actually worked! Thanks.
There's a feature built into my Firefox browser called "request desktop site" which does show a desktop view, but not all of the features available in Wikipedia appear, but using that link at the bottom of each Wikipedia page produces a superior result. O'Dea (talk) 06:31, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
