Result of clicking an image in a category

When viewing a category of images, clicking on the filename (the caption of an image) takes me to the file description page whereas clicking on the image itself takes me to some sort of viewer mode. On enwiki, the image instead takes me to the file description page. Is there a way to disable the viewer feature? DMacks (talk) 12:53, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Splitting file versions

Hi. I posted a question over at COM:GVP#Advice on quality of two versions of same image about a month ago but it looks like no one has gotten to it. There is a bug in case of searching on file description in Arabic language

Difficulties with uploading

My dear collegues,

I have an image of a politician that is not yet in the commons. I made it myself. I have tried to upload it, added the image, the author (myself), the original source (I took the photograph), introduced where and when the image was taken, but it didn't work.

Hi this was a fast answer. No I was not using the upload wizard, just what appears when I try to upload. But after I read your comment I am using the upload wizard now and it works much better. But still, I can't upload. The appears the message "this field is required" above the date and below the "add a description in an other language". The date is filled out, but the description in an other language not. The description is just the name of the politician. So this is how far I got for now. Krdstn (talk) 13:21, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

@Krdstn: OK, each file must have at least an English description but other languages are not required. Even if you only put the name of the politician in there, that should be enough. If you accidentally open the "Other Language" box, click on the red dustbin icon to close it. Hope that helps. Rodhullandemu (talk) 13:35, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

I'm unable to upload more works

Min size of uploaded photo?

Good morning,

Hope you are well. I uploaded a photo - title 'Donkey Drop' - yesterday, but have uploaded a file size around 500KB. Is that enough or should I replace this photo with a higher quality one?

@Btwien: Hi there. I would say it is adequate but a higher-resolution version would be better. Anyone re-using the image might want to crop to home in on detail, so the higher quality the better. Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:29, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

how to embed audio article version from the editor

I am trying to embed the audio-version to the original text article but not sure how to do it from the editor. for example, this mp3 files is an audio version of Dholewal

Looking for help to embed the audio version in the original article. I think I don't have permission to upload mp3 files. also not sure If I can play the audio from an external link using a widget.

This will help dyslexic and visually impaired users to listen to the article instead of suffering reading them or using poor quality screen-readers apps.

Unable to upload the logo of the company of which I'm creating a page for

Hello Team,

I took the logo of the company from its website and it says that it isn't my work and I can only upload the photos which I have taken. It isn't possible since it is the logo of the company.

@IamHaseeb: Please sign your posts here by ending them with '~~~~', which will be turned into an account name and timestamp. It saves someone (like me) a lot of effort. So does being more specific about what you are trying to do.
I'm guessing that this relates to en:Foloosi, but correct me if it does not.
Is this the logo in question?
Assuming those guesses are correct: Commons:Threshold of originality does not have any information about the UAE (nothing relevant at Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Arab Emirates either), but I think this logo is probably simple enough for {{PD-ineligible}}. I don't know exactly how you tried to upload this -- you don't say, and there are a lot of ways to do that -- but this should certainly be possible with Special:Upload. - Jmabel ! talk 00:37, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Failed reupload

I tried to reupload a new version of a djvu file (File:NiimiNankichi-NurseryRhymes and Poems-2-DaiNipponTosho-1981.djvu, about 93MB) eight times until now but every time I encountered time out error (HTTP 408 error) so that could not replace the old version to the new file. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS. If you aren't tech savvy use w:NewPipe on a android device, download it from f-droid. It's open-source. If you don't have an android use YouTube-dl. And finally upload the videos here using https://tools.wmflabs.org/video2commons/ . Peace // Eatcha (talk · contribs) 09:46, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Changing a photograph

Hello

I am the son of the artist Jonah Jones, about whom there is a Wikipedia article, listed as 'Jonah Jones (sculptor)'. I am also the webmaster of the sceneandword.org website (http://www.sceneandword.org/cofio_jonah_jones/).

I have just successfully (as far as I understand it!) edited the text to incorporate various changes by his biographer Peter Jones. We would also like to replace the existing main portrait image of Jonah Jones with a more relevant one of the artist working in his studio. When I attempted to do this, I encountered two issues that I was unable to solve:

(1) I could find/see no way to remove the existing portrait image.

(2) When trying to upload the new image (having checked "This is my own work" since the photographer granted a full licence to Jonah Jones's estate to use the photograph; I also entered a description of the image, but inserted nothing in the 'category' field), there was a "Something went wrong" message. Details given were that "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikipedia Commons." I can provide the following information about the file: - Format = JPG (wrong format?) - File size = 452 kb (too large?) - File name = Jonah Jones at his workshop, 1989, (photo Robert Greetham)_1 (too long?) - Dimensions = 2000 px wide by 2020 px deep (wrong dimensions?)

I would be very grateful for any assistance or suggestions you can offer.

Also, "photographer granted a full licence" doesn't make it your own work. (1) You should accurately attribute the photographer. (2) This is going to have to go through COM:OTRS. Copyright help regarding File:Conrad Lau (Chance Vought Corporation photo).jpg

I am uncertain of the authorship/ownership of the photo. I believe it is an employee ID photo taken while Conrad Lau was employed by Chance Vought Aircraft Corporation. That company became Ling Temco Vought and has sine been dissolved and no longer exists.

What approach do we take when the entity that created/owned the photo no longer exists?

  • @Sarrica: It sounds like it might be an orphaned copyright, although there must be a successor to the intellectual property rights of LTV, presuming they owned the copyright.
  • On the other hand: what do we know about the publication history of this photo, which I presume was taken in the U.S., so the Hirtle chart becomes relevant. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Licensing questions

I have licensing questions regarding two images uploaded to the Commons: 1845 Map of Galveston: File:Plan_of_the_City_of_Galveston,_Texas.jpg

  • This map appears to be published in 1845 as there are copies of the same map at the University of Houston, Baylor University, and Yale University. On this basis, is it in the public domain?
  • If so, what is the appropriate way to change the "tagging" of the image?
  • The current tag implies that the University of Houston is the copyright holder, but released it into the public domain?

1835 Bank Note (uncirculated): File:Commercial_and_Agricultural_Bank_of_Texas_$1.00_(one_dollar)_private_scrip_(8519862080).jpg

  • The Flickr tag is "no known copyright restrictions," but the commons tag is "Please add additional copyright tags to this image if more specific information about copyright status can be determined."
  • Is there a legitimate free use rationale for this image?

@Oldsanfelipe2: The first is certainly public domain. A better tag would be {{PD-US-expired}}. The current tag could be read to mean that the University of Houston is relinquishing its rights to the digital reproduction of the map (though see {{PD-scan}} for more on that), but more likely it was just a mis-tagging by the original uploader here on Commons, since the source page doesn't make any assertions of copyright ownership or release, just that the item is public domain.
As for the second one, I think it's safe to say it's also public domain. If it was first published in the 19th century, then there would be no doubt. If it wasn't published until after 2003, as the file page suggests may be the case, then it would still be public domain since, according to the chart at COM:HIRTLE, works first published in the US after 2003 become public domain 70 years after the death of the author (if known), or, if the author isn't known, 95 years after publication or 120 years after creation, whichever comes first. Assuming an unknown author, 1835 + 120 years = 1955, so it's public domain. A good additional tag to clarify its status would be {{PD-US-unpublished}}. clpo13(talk) 23:27, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Problem on uploaded file

Hi to all! I have a problem: I uploaded DjVu-file File:Загадочные истории (А. С. Грин, 1915).djvu, and see strange behavior: the preview of the title page of the file is not displayed as usual, and also I see a warning notice there: "Warning: This file type may contain malicious code. By executing it, your system may be compromised." Could anyone explain — what is wrong with the file?   • ✓ Done Problem resolved. I requested speedy deletion of that file (by putting the template). The file was deleted. Images in chronological order

Hi, Is there any way I can have images from 1-28 all in chronological order?,
The images at Category:Davey2010 temp 13 now start from 10 instead of 1 and images 1 and 2 are randomly placed before 10 and 20 which makes the order confusing,

music event pages for Belgium

I am the website admin for a few Belgian music event websites. now I was asked to create/update Wikipedia pages about our events for non commercial and historical reasons. so our graphical department provides me with all artwork (some had to be scraped of the web to get those back as the company that previously owned the rights to the artwork no longer had these, ie. pre 2018).

How can I make sure my uploads no longer get flagged ? I can provide near all current artwork in high resolution.

@Cheapasstechbe: A few issues here:
  1. It sounds like you are editing on Wikipedia, probably on a paid basis, on topics where you have an interest. This is probably a violation of en:WP:COI; I suggest you read that. But we are here on Commons, not Wikipedia, so I won't go further into that here.
  2. When you say "non-commercial": does that mean the images in question can be reused only for non-commercial purposes? If so, that is not acceptable on Commons. If you just mean that you do not believe you are promoting your own business by doing this, then that is no issue.
  3. Who owns the copyright on the artwork? That is who we need to have grant a license. There are two ways to do this:
    • They can post that license on a site that is clearly under their control. Then anyone can do the upload, and reference that site as the source. This is what I recommend, if it is possible.
    • They can go through the process described at COM:OTRS to grant permission for someone else to upload on their behalf.

  1. I do not get paid for this, one of the purposes of wikipedia is to have reliable information - how more reliable can one get if it is sourced at the base.
  2. There is no purpose of promoting the event - there will be no links to buy tickets or other promotional material. I only want to set a title image 'about' the festival and some publicly available pictures. (probably better to upload to wikipedia itself)
  3. The copyright is owned by the company Art-Group-Music to which I am a subcontractor - which I will now ask to grant that license.

For Commons -- where we are mostly concerned with photos -- I generally agree with your "how [much] more reliable can one get [than] if it is sourced at the base." For Wikipedia, it's another matter entirely. Some autobiographies are more reliable than others, but as a group autobiographies are notably unreliable. To stay strictly within the realm of music: bands will diminish the importance of former band members or be entirely fail to mention them; people will certainly rarely write objectively about bad reviews of their own music, or of music they are trying to promote; people will completely omit other names they may have been well known by at other times in their life; etc. - Jmabel ! talk 17:47, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

That image is on Japanese Wikipedia, and can only be used there. If you want to use it elsewhere, I think you'd have to get it moved here to Commons. That might not be possible if the owner doesn't want it moved or if the owner isn't known. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:30, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

If you need confidential communication, you can probably write to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org; they can probably help with that. Otherwise, you can nominate your pictures for deletion through the normal deletion process; I don't think any are in use, and they don't look particularly valuable. I would guess that if the motorcycle club you appear to have photographed would like these pictures taken down, a request for a courtesy deletion might be granted. Most of these seem to have been taken in private places, so it's not clear they should have been uploaded in the first place if the people in them didn't actively consent.
You never wrote anything on your user page so there is nothing to delete there. Your user talk page is only a welcome message, so there is really nothing to delete there either.
Blanking descriptions like you have is generally considered vandalism. Please don't do that.

@AliL07: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. Upload under a new filename (do not overwrite any old logo that may be there). Make sure that any copyright issues are dealt with, as Jeff G. describes.   • @DaniloRobert7: You don't say what country; the law would vary wildly. However, assuming the photographer lived much longer than when the photo was taken, in most countries this is likely to be still in copyright, and would require a license from the photographer or, more likely, the heir to the photographer's intellectual property. - Jmabel ! talk 23:07, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

light grey fonts

unregistered bot

Hi! Apologies if this is the wrong forum for a request like this. This user: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Wikimedia_Commons_Welcome is a bot that made more than 1 million edits last year. It is not classified as a bot though, so when we (the WMF) try and analyze the data to see how features are influencing human behavior, this bot is actually having a pretty big influence on our numbers. @Jkatz (WMF): Hi Jon. That bot, as far as I know, is not flagged on purpose. When a bot leaves a message at your talk page, you receive a different notification. This bot leaves a welcome message at new users' talk page, and the welcome message is intended to be read by receivers and should attract attention. @Jkatz (WMF): We actually want to make it more humanistic, I think. A "bot" may not be as humanistic. Of course, I may be wrong here, it's just my opinion. However, can't you flag this username as well, as Zhuyifei1999 said below? As far as I know, we don't have any other bot to welcome users, so flagging this should solve the problem. @Ahmad252: I hear you on wanting to avoid the bot-name. I'll look into what other wikis do. Unfortunately, a simple filter against that one name is more work than you might think.   • It certainly shouldn't say that the date is 13 March 2020 if it is actually from the 19th century!

Pictures from Flickr ineligible for QI?

Hi.

In the quality images candidates page it's written: "Pictures must have been created by a Wikimedian in order to be eligible for QI status. This means that pictures from, for example, Flickr are ineligible."

But what if I have taken the picture myself and uploaded it to flickr, with a CC-SA-2.0 license? (eg:Turdus merula on an Eucalyptus tree.jpg)

It has been created by a wikymedian (myself) so is there any reason for the picture not being eligible?

How to get rid of a mistaken redirect

Adding an image to commons just to enrich an OpenStreetMap object

About 5000-15000 OpenStreetMap objects currently refer to a Wikimedia Commons object. For example, a church could have an image tag or a wikimedia_commons tag that refers to an image hosted by Commons. This image will often already exist when the subject is for example a notable building. However, Commons is also used simply to illustrate a less important feature. OpenStreetMap does not have a notability principle, so these objects can be theoretically quite ingnificant, and quite numerous. A real-life example is collecting images of bicycle parkings. Maybe this goes to far? On the other hand, allowing this kind of use might also harness more of the OSM community for adding images of more notable features.

Reading the Notability policy for Commons, I wasn't convinced this kind of use is acceptable or not.

@Joost schouppe: Commons doesn't have a "notability" threshold, but it does have a "realistically useful for an educational purpose" requirement, in Commons:Project scope. This is a fairly low standard, but I think individual pictures of every feature in OpenStreetMap would fall below it. I don't think Commons wants a photo of every tree in the world, or every lamp-post, or every bollard. We probably don't even want a photo of every house. On the other hand, Commons was willing to import 1.8 million pictures from Geograph Britain and Ireland, which was (and still is) trying to collect pictures of every square kilometre of Britain and Ireland. That was rather controversial, but ultimately those pictures seem to have been tolerated (and there's occasional talk about importing another 4 million). The question I'd ask before adding a picture is "could a picture of another item of this type stand in for this one". For instance, once we've got ten pictures of a particular type of power pole, we don't gain anything by adding another picture of the same type: if you want to show what a particular pole looks like, a picture of an identical pole will do. On the other hand, photographs of every railway station, or even every bus stop, would probably be fine. I think bicycle parking falls close to the boundary: large cycle parks are doubtless in scope, but every individual stand probably isn't. --bjh21 (talk) 16:37, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Finding a full version of File:Trumann_hiroshima.ogg

I am trying to find the full version of President Truman's speech on the bombing of Hiroshima. The description points to a dead link on the Truman Library website. I found an archived version, but the audio download points to a 52-byte file containing the text RTSPtextrtsp://qtss.id.ucsb.edu/presidency/12165.mov and nothing else. Alas, there is no audio link anymore. The site has now a separate media archive, but I was not successful in finding the report. You could try and ask the people behind the project. BTW: Clicking on “audio” in the archived page I got a page mediaclip.php with an individual clipID opened (the same ID like the one for the main page). Broken render for File:Former Valued image seal.svg?

File:Former Valued image seal.svg has a 214px render which is broken but doesn't change on file change. Setting the render size to anything else produces a correct render. Is there any clear reason for this? I doubt it's related to the SVG code, perhaps something improperly cached? Eiim (talk) 01:46, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

I see somebody posted a drawing of mine (of Lucy Thurber) without permission. (I have the original.) I’d like it removed. Can you please tell me how to go about doing that? If you have an academic paper that would stand the scrutiny of peer review, you should submit it to a medical journal. People's Choice Award Photo

I uploaded a file recently called 'People's Choice Award'. There was a conflict on the upload about where it came from. The original upload by me is the correct one stating who took the picture, there was a conflict because it was not with her device but on behalf of another users device so the conflict remains between action and ownership but with legal rights to use image in a free and public space. The photo itself may have been used somewhere on the internet but I have not checked. This upload,I have the right to use.   • @AlterĒvolvere: "Another person" is not an acceptable source. You cannot grant the license on someone else's work, and that other person cannot grant an effective license by talking to you. There are probably two reasonable possibilities here under which the picture can be kept:
    • The actual copyright holder, presumably the person who took the photo, can post it on a site clearly under their control and state the license clearly there.

Je n'ai pas réussi à trouver le guide qui prescrit la syntaxe à respecter pour modifier des commentaires. Très concrètement, j'ai tenté de corriger les mentions qui accompagnent le plan de Paris : "1630 Plan de Sauvé.jpg", pour rectifier la date (ce plan n'est pas de 1630 mais des années 1670-1680). Je ne sais pas comment ajouter une ligne "bibliographie" qui me permettrait de mentionner la source justifiant ma correction de date. Je ne sais pas non plus modifier le nom du fichier, où figure la date de 1630. Y a-t-il un guide qui me donne la marche à suivre ? copyright issues on protest signs

what are the copyright constraints on social media images of hand written protest signs? is there any copyright-safe source of images of protests?

i'm trying to build up the Urdu language pages, and International Women's Day has produced a huge number of images of hand written Urdu, and Urdu in modern fonts, etc. but i don't know what i am allowed to do with them?

i would obviously pick the less controversial examples, so it does not come across as bias or detract from the main point on the language pages, but things that translate to fairly simple things like "march for women's freedom" etc. seem appropriate enough, it's mainly just privacy and copyright issues i am worried about. Though some of the more controversial examples might be appropriate on pages for feminism etc. or i guess i could go for out of context words? but that seems creepy?

  • @Irtapil: Given that you are mentioning Urdu, I assume you are talking either about India or Pakistan; you might need someone with some expertise about the copyright law of the relevant country.
  • Making a guess based on countries I know more about: typically, common phrases like "march for women's freedom" cannot be copyrighted, nor can handwriting or typography, so these should not raise a problem. - Jmabel ! talk 05:37, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: from the options on the upload sections i got the impression wiki was under USA law because it was USA based? but maybe that guess is way off.
privacy is an issue too? but if i show the sign but not the person, that's mostly ok, probably?
so handwriting is probably ok, but drawings and logos etc. maybe aren't?
is there an official wiki guideline of some sort i can refer to?

@Jmabel: where do i go for more info on the typography not being copyright thing? i imagine it would be fare use as *part* of a non commercial work, but I've been using only free-as-in-freedom fonts for anywhere that involved the font being the main focus, e.g. an image of an individual letter or a text only image where the typography itself is the focus. what boxes do i tick for fonts

how do i describe the copyright information for fonts, if there is no other content, e.g. an image of a single letter or glyph? I think this would be allowed, but i can't work out which category it would fit in, i'm not sure how to fill in the upload form?   • @Irtapil: I'm not sure I understand your question. Fonts can be copyrighted, and I don't think that an image that was specifically of a particular character of a copyrighted font would be acceptable here, although ironically text that happens to be written in that font would be. Help checking some images recently uploaded

The user Joaopaulo21 (talk · contribs) recently uploaded 4 images of the Argentine operatic tenor en:Luis Lima. However, I'm not quite sure that these images are "own work" and that the uploader holds their copyright. For example, this collage of old pictures. It can't be "own work". The other pics are: File:Luis Lima e Susana Frangi.jpg, File:Luis Lima apresenta programa.jpg, File:Luis Lima e Marilin Miller.jpg. On my Wiki page, I have attempted three times to upload photos onto my page sourced from the copyright holder herself. They all include photos from her 1927 film Little Mickey Grogan of which she was one of the stars. Before her death in 2018, she allowed them to be posted on the site https://www.younghollywoodhof.com/lassie.htm. It is from this site that I have attempted to use for the Little Mickey Grogan page. May they be allowed to published? Even using one of them would add value to this page.

Are you sure that you have entered some information in all the relevant boxes? It might be that one of the empty boxes is highlighted by a thin red frame. Using images with permission from the owner

I have uploaded an image from wikipedia from an owner which has agreed upon this act. The image itself was original from Facebook, so he has granted me access to another picture, but I'm afraid it might be also lableled as an unauthorized usage. @Daniel Broggi Ciardullo: When you say "an owner … agreed", I'm guessing that you mean something short of what we need:
  • (To be clear: by "owner", I'm hoping you mean either the photographer or a person to whom the copyright has been legally transferred: that's the only one who can give permission.)
  • We need that individual to grant a specific free license, typically {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
  • If their post on their Facebook page is public-facing, they can grant permission by stating on that page that they are releasing it under the specified license, and then you can cite that as your source and upload using that license.
  • Failing that, if they have some other page or web site that is obviously under their control, they can do the same thing there.
  • Or they can upload the photo here themself, instead of you doing it, and follow the instructions at COM:OTRS to send email from an email address clearly associated with themself to indicate that the account from which they uploaded is theirs.
  • Failing that (but this is slower), they can follow the instructions at COM:OTRS to grant the license. Once that is complete, you can upload on their behalf.

Found relevant Fars News Agency URL where photos were before. URL is dead

I found some photos taken by Fars but the URL is long dead and no one has archived it due to it from US sanctions targeting the organization. Is it safe to mention that the URL is where the photo is from, but it's dead? I also did some image tracing and I found the original URL/Farsi title source. Ominae (talk) 12:35, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

  • "I found" -- on Commons, somewhere else (where)?
  • "the URL is long dead" -- I assume this means the URL on the Fars site, but correct me if I'm wrong
  • "Is it safe" -- safe in what respect? Legally? Epistemologically, as in being confident in something you can't directly verify? Something else?
  • "to mention" -- on Commons? In a citation elsewhere?
This all might be clearer with a specific example.

How do you know the image is connected to the dead URL on the Fars site?
Why would being connected to the dead URL mean it is either PD or free-licensed?

@Jmabel: : Yeah. Can't access the Fars URL anymore, which is why I wanted to ask. As for the Fars URL, I used Google image to trace it and did find the Farsi title on it. And Fars allows its images to be under CC 4.0. You're right too that it'll need some explanation in the source field. The Firearms Blog site has the images taken from Fars since there's a Fars watermark.

Hey Libanius. As long as they're rightly public domain, there aren't really any special rules specifically because they happen to be related to Nazism, as opposed to some other historical government. For more information about copyright rules for Germany, see Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany.
It may however be a good idea to mark such files with Template:Nazi symbol, since some of this media may still be illegal in Germany for reasons not related to copyright. GMGtalk 13:15, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Copyright in Germany is life + 70 years so unless the photographer died in WW2 or soon after, this probably won't be allowed. Do you know the name of the photographer? --Taktaal (talk) 19:30, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Libanius. cf. the case of Heinrich Hoffmann. In the U.S. the seized images of him are in the public domain, but in Germany (and Austria and I guess other countries, too) they are copyrighted until the end of 2027. Noone cares, though, about this, and you can find the images in Photographs by Heinrich Hoffmann. For Helmut Laux (you gave an link to an inexisting page on Commons, above) the situation is even more complex: Apparently, he died in 1987, so his images will public domain in most countries not until 2058. If there are images, though, which have been seized by the US American or in general the allied troops in 1944/-45 they should be treated the same, but only these images! — Speravir – 00:31, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

However none of the next 6 allegories is presented. Fortunately, the source of the picture is shown and it is http://www.internetculturale.it/jmms/iccuviewer/iccu.jsp?id=oai%3A193.206.197.121%3A18%3AVE0049%3ACSTOR.244.14019 The problem is that I am not able to download the other pictures with the same high resolution. The best result I reached was approx. 1,200x1,700 pixels. Please, let somebody help me. At least two issues: no indication of under what license the individual photos are used; an assumption that Commons is the origin of the photos, rather than the individual rights-holders.   • @Bio-bean: Technically, you do it just like any other image; there are miscellaneous tutorials at en:Wikipedia:Images#Tutorials and help. Since I don't know what you do and don't know out of those many pages of material, I can't tell you where exactly to start.
  • In terms of copyrights, licenses, etc., though it would be a lot easier to give you a meaningful answer if you would (1) say what country your company is in and (2) link to an online page that shows the logo in question, so that someone can look at it and get some sense of how it compares to the threshold of originality for copyright in that country. Also, if it is eligible for copyright and you want to offer a free license, either that has to come from the person who designed the logo, or we are probably going to have to go through the COM:OTRS process for you to show that that person transferred the copyright (you'd be amazed how many companies don't own the copyright on their copyrighted logos).

A good thumbnail will typically be a good thumbnail wherever a video is used, so it'd make sense to try to centralize that function here. How to distinguish between Category:Skylines and Category:Cityscapes?

User:Heeheemalu put all files to Category:Skylines from Category:Cityscapes. The trouble with me is that he has been edit-warring over many files with me. I have tried to explain to him that "Skyline" means the horizon created by a city's overall structure, or by human intervention in a non-urban setting or in nature. The question now is, he seems unable to distinguish between "Skyline" and "Cityscape". I have reported this user to COM:AN/U, but no one wants to get involved at my AN/U. As I mentioned before in my AN/U (and in other places as well), I am neither starting a war-edit nor intentionally abusing the skylines category. There is just no clear and universally-acknowledged distinction between a cityscape and skyline and there are often grey areas that are subjective to opinions, as long as there is a clear view of shape created by a city's overall structure against the sky in the picture, it could be counted as a skyline. In the wikipedia page User:Kai3952 has pointed out in my AN/U, there are plenty of pictures that do not fit the user's "strict" definition of the buildings appearing on the horizon, such the images shown:

Both of them are placed on the wikipedia page "Skylines" as modern examples of skylines. Neither pictures show the buildings themselves being situated on the horizon, despite a horizon being present; nevertheless, these images are still allowed to be used as examples under the "modern skylines" subsection without anyone complaining about it. This is a similar case with the pictures which I have categorised as "skylines", of which the definition is not as specific as User:Kai3952 has made it. The only non-debatable point here is that an aerial photo cannot be a skyline as the angle is too high to show buildings against a sky with a visible horizon.

As "skyline" is often categorised as a daughter category under the category of "cityscapes", thus to avoid over-categorisation, I usually place the image under the daughter category if possible, unless there is clear evidence against this.

I reckon it is be a wise course of action to establish a clear definition to distinguish between these two words and/or even reconsider how the categories are categorised (e.g. Should "skyline" be a subcategory of "cityscape" or should they be two distinct categories if they are distinctly different?) I will be more than happy to re-categorise my images when I have been informed by the community to do so under clear instructions of which images should/shouldn't be placed into which categories.

A cityscape is a view of a city, I suppose showing a larger area than just a single building. A skyline is "a view of the visible horizon, which is the horizon as obscured by features such as hills, mountains, trees and man-made structures.", according to the description on Category:Skylines, which it seems I wrote in 2015. I think most definitions permit skylines of natural objects such as mountain ranges, as well as buildings, although some apply it only to buildings. --ghouston (talk) 04:53, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

I'm not 100% sure about the details of mwclient, my guess that that is is one of these two:
  • Downloads the entire list of pages in category and goes through
  • Download a fixed number of pages in category, goes through, then download a fixed number, after the last page that was downloaded in ASCII order

I can run a separate job to archive all the files reviewed by the bot. This should not affect the reviews, but add the additional archive parameter. But there's no stats available, it's possible that the job wil fail to catch up ever unless I run multiple instances on multiple IPs. Worst cases: IA blocks toolforge IP or flickr blocks IA. PetScan search for no description in Basque

Hi! I am trying to use PetScan to find files in c:Category:History of Donostia-San Sebastián with no description in Basque, or at least no Basque language template in the description. I added different code syntaxes, mainly eu or {{eu |1= }} or different combinations of it in PetScan, third tab ("Templates&links"), inside the box "Has none of these templates:". Still I get results including description in Basque. (Do I need some other template related to description?) On the first tab "Categories" I added "Language:Commons", "Project:Wikimedia", "Depth:2", "Categories:History of Donostia-San Sebastián". On the second tab "Page properties" I ticked "File:" and "Template:" boxes. I got 7603 results, including descriptions in Basque with Basque language template. Petscan is the wrong tool for this task. You can use the own search, for parameters see the (huge) help in mw:Help:CirrusSearch. This should give you all files in cat. History of Donostia-San Sebastián (by the way, the prefix :c: above is, being on Commons, internally not necessary) and subcats that lack the template {{Eu}}:

Note the limitations of deepcat filter in the help! Maybe you have to search in a deeper level, too.

Need help with a file, screenshot from YouTube

Hello, some time ago, I asked a question on uploading CC videos from YouTube. I have gone through Commons:YouTube files.
Now I have uploaded a file from YouTube File:Kharaj Mukherjee interview photo.png. This is a screenshot from an interview/longer video. The channel's mic is visible in the photo, so I am prety sure this is their own work. The aim of this upload is to use the image on the person's Wikipedia article, which is crying for a photograph.

Before I upload similar photos, could you check the file page, see if everything is alright, and make necessary changes, so that I can follow those edits? In case the file can not be uploaded, let me know. It is good to know these before I upload more photos.

I went to the position (it’s by the way not 3:45 min, but 5:47 min, which are 347 seconds, I hope you notice the numbers) and clicked with right mouse button on time scrollbar. I got a context menu where I could copy the video URl on recent position (with the shortened https://youtu.be/JjNNZoxoMbk?t=347 link). There is FOP (Freedom of Panorama) in the Netherlands, you can take pictures of a house, if it's a rijksmonument or not. Better no people on it (especially not the ones who live there) and you have to respect the privacy, so it must be from a little distance.   • Whatever contest you are asking about, you'd have to ask on the talk page (or another dedicated discussion page) of that contest.

@BKannen: Copy Orbit1.svg locally to your disk (click on “original file” or the preview image itself) or do this with an already translated version like Orbit1 de.svg. Rename to Orbit1_nl.svg and open in an ordinary text editor (one with syntax highlighting for XML is highly preferred, though). Search for the strings you want to translate and replace. Save (in UTF-8 encoding) and check the result, you can drag and drop in your browser. If good, upload the file. What I cannot estimate is, whether you need some changes of text position. Hi, I wanted to upload two old photos on Commons. These photos were taken in Berlin in 1910 and 1919 and show an historical building. Both these photos seem to be postcards (as they have info and date typewritten on them), so they were probably published before 1925. I found them on the official website of the building. If I manage to obtain an authorization to use the images, through the building's official website, can I upload them to Commons? And, in case I could, what do I have to chose as licence? Hi, I uploaded the images of the building (this one and this one) but I'm still not sure if they are suitable for Commons. These photos are a couple of postcards from around 1910 and 1919 respectively and they were taken in Berlin. I found them in the official website of the building but I discovered they came from the Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Heritage Archive), this institute is the copyright holder of the original images (No. 40019611 and 30040848). So I worry of having caused a copyright infringement; I uploaded them considering the fact that they resulted in the public domain according to the fact that they have been published before 1925, but now I've getting a bit confused about it (the archive's copyright policy does not mention this possibility). The 1925 date is only relevant for the U.S. (and only if they'd been published in the U.S.); I'm not sure what Ruslik had in mind.
It's not clear that the Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz comes by the copyright legitimately (they didn't make the postcards; how were rights transfered, etc.). There is a surprising amount of copyright fraud by established institutions.

Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany. Though I'm not sure that has the older terms for photographs, which was less than 70 years even if meaningless now. But anyways, if a photographer is named on the back (I don't see any on the front), then we would need to find out how long they lived. If no photographer is named, or just a company is named, then {{PD-anon-70-EU}} should apply. It can be a good idea to also upload the backs of the postcards -- typically on the same filename, then overwrite with the front of the postcard, so the back is in the history for reference's sake (since that is what shows it was anonymous). I thank you both for answering. I have no means to consult the physical postcards to see if the photographer is named in the rear of it, however in the archive website there is no mention of the author neither in the description, nor in any other place associated with the file. So it is likely (as usual with old postcards) that the work is anonymous (on the internet you can find plenty of Berlin postcards from around the same period, with exactly the same fonts for the names typewritten on the card, so it was probably published by some company for wich the photographer presumably worked) and the copyright would have expired in the 1980s (1910 + 70, 1919 + 70). So I would have considered these photos in the public domain if it wasn't for the bpk still holding their copyright. I read the Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany and I did not find a reason for it. Anyway, do you think the images should be deleted from Commons? Hi Jmabel! If you go to bpk-bildagentur.de/shop and paste "40019611" and "30040848" in the search box you will find both photos with their description (it is impossible to link the images, I don't know why) and it says "Copyright: bpk", also they have watermarks. If you go to the terms of use page here: bpk-bildagentur.de/?15185805851128876467, there is no mention of public domain images. The parismuseescollections.paris.fr archive, for example, allows the use of public domain images and clearly explains how to download them. Uploads from Flickr

I have trouble uploading files from Flickr. If I use the wizard I get: 'There was an error in your submission. The URL entered is unsupported or points to an invalid or restricted Flickr image or photoset and cannot be used.'. With the old upload form I get: 'There was a problem during the HTTP request: 404 Not Found'. With Flickr2Commons I get: 'Invalid API Key (Key has expired)'. I tried with several different Flickr files, all of which are fine in terms of licence. Can anyone help? -- B2Belgium (talk) 20:01, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

file renaming

I tried to rename the File:19-01-18-Prednistrowien-RalfR-20.jpg to File:Kirche in der Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße (19-01-18-Prednistrowien).jpg, but colleague Ralf Roletschek canceled the edit with the comment “Kriterium 1 & 4”. I do not speak German, and he does not speak English and Russian: therefore, communication is problematic. First of all, rename requests should not be used to frustrate contributors. COM:FR is very clear about this: “Uploaders often have schemas naming their files; moving files might break them.” It is obvious in this case that the proposed alternative name would break the naming scheme of the uploader. However, Iruka13, has a point as “Prednistrowien” just refers to Transnistria, i.e. the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic – also called Pridnestrowien in German. Not even the name of the city is given in the file name – this would be Tiraspol in this case. This violates indeed our policy. Quote: “The only piece of meaningful information is a broad location, such as a city, province, or country.” In this case, the filename specifies just the name of the country but nothing else which is related to the depicted building. However, Ralf Roletschek has a point as well as he stresses that the file description includes all the information which is missing in the filename. This addresses the concern of the policy. Quote: “In this case, the location is so large that an average person would not be able to figure out where the image was taken or what the image depicted, without assistance from someone that knows the area.” This is obviously not an issue here. But much worse than a minor violation of the policy for filenames is the edit and rename war that took place in this case. Iruka13, why didn't you try to talk to Ralf Roletschek on his talk page, looking for a compromise? Our discussion here with him, in Russian, came to the conclusion that the only reason why the file should not be renamed is the reluctance of the one who downloaded it. And to my last question, as you see, he did not want to answer. How many days have passed since it was submitted? You should meanwhile have noticed that Ralf is insisting on this scheme and that he is right here. AFBorchert pointed to the renaming rules. Iruka13, I gave an example for a possible filename. Ralf has for years this schene with date first and RalfR at the end (confusingly he is not that consequent for very recent uploads, but he started to upload to Flickr, first and uplaod a smlller version here, if I understand correctly). Also keeping the first part, here “Prednistrowien”, would be good, if correct (it is actually a typo mistake, here!). Not recognizing individual schemes can happen to us all, but after Ralf’s intervention and the different threads you should be warned, now. @AFBorchert: Ich habe einen Fehler gemacht, ich habe Prednistrowien und Pridnestrowien durcheinandergebracht. Mein Tschechisch/Slowenisch "pred", also "vor" habe ich falsch interpretiert. File:19-01-18-Prednistrowien-RalfR-20.jpg ist falsch, es müßte File:19-01-18-Pridnestrowien-RalfR-20.jpg sein. Und auch alle andere Dateien der Serie sind falsch. "pred" ist "vor", das Land wird von Rumänien und Moldawien als "hinter" bezeichnet, also "trans". Trans Dnistr ist die rumänische Bezeichnung, prid Dnestr die Eigenbezeichnung. Es ist also ein Faupax meinerseits, die Dateien tschechisch-slowenisch statt russisch zu benennen. Mein Fehler. Der kann gern korrigiert werden, kein Problem. Der erste Vorschlag ist doch voll ok. Hätte ich auch von Anfang an nichts dagegen gehabt. Statt der fortlaufenden Nummerierung verwende ich mittlerweile meist die Kameranummer, um auch die dazugehörende RAW wiederzufinden. Die "komischen" Zahlen bei File:20-02-25-Tesla-Wald-RalfR-101 0367-50p.jpg sind also nicht irgendeine Marotte. Ich denke mir doch was bei den Dateinamen. Ich habe ne halbe Mio. Fotos gespeichert.

Dass es möglich sein sollte, von dem hochgeladene Bild wieder das zugehörige RAW-Bild zu finden, ist mir bewusst. Rate mal, warum bei meinen Bildern (hier ein Beispiel) eine Referenz in der Dateibeschreibung aufgeführt ist. Natürlich ist es auch denkbar, das in den Dateinamen zu integrieren und dann sollte dieser Teil natürlich auch erhalten werden. Das dürfte normalerweise unstrittig sein und es war sicherlich nicht gut, dass hierauf keine Rücksicht genommen wurde. Warum wir jetzt über das Tornado-Bild diskutieren, ist mir nicht klar. Characters not allowed in file names

I tried to upload this image as "File:Natsit & ISIS = samaa paskaa.jpg" exactly as it says on the banner, but Commons wouldn't let me, saying there was a problem with the upload. When I replaced "&" with "ja" (Finnish for "and") and "=" with "on" (Finnish for "is") everything worked OK.

Was it because of the "&" and "=" characters? I thought the only disallowed characters in file names were "/" (the directory separator on UNIX-based file systems) and non-printable characters. JIP (talk) 22:38, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Those characters can be used as far as I know, and there are existing names like File:&TEMSIA.jpg and File:1= 08.09.46 fl. 1.jpg. en:Wikipedia:File names says the following are forbidden: # < > [ ] | : { } / and also sequences of tildas. --ghouston (talk) 01:30, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
It's also possible it can run into something on the global title blacklist and Commons blacklist, e.g., # URI like page titles, in the global list. --ghouston (talk) 01:45, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

I have an audio clip I would like to upload to wikimedia for presevation. This involves Ed Colligan speaking about death of palm os, and future devices such as the infamous Palm Foleo. It's a significant moment in Palm OS history, and Ed Colligan is very much a media-shy figure who to date has shown a disinterest in providing interviews or discussing the history of Palm OS. Moments like these are important to preserve for that reason. I'm not sure where this falls though. Palm published the MP3 of the investor conference call on their news site (now long gone, as is the company - the name has been licensed out) and I wonder if wikimedia is a suitable location to upload? Licensing cropped images

I recently uploaded two images File:Orm arm cropped.jpg and File:Stanford Hydraulic Arm.jpg that I cropped from an existing Commons image that was uploaded from Flicker with a proper license. Both files have been tagged by a bot because it could not verify the Flicker source. I understand why the verification failed, but I'm not sure what I should do about it. Should I just remove the tag? Get someone else to review it? Is there a better way to make clear the licensing of an image derived from a Commons Flickr upload?--agr (talk) 15:14, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

System refuses upload even though file name was corrected.

Hello, I tried uploading four images whose filenames including ".com" The system refused, telling me: 

".com" is not a permitted file type. Permitted file types are tiff, tif, png, gif, jpg, jpeg, webp, xcf, pdf, mid, ogg, ogv, svg, djvu, stl, oga, flac, opus, wav, webm, mp3, midi, mpg, mpeg.

So clicked to remove the uploads and corrected the filename so ".com" is no longer present.

But the system keeps refusing the uploads. It keeps displaying the filenames I used the first time I uploaded, with the .com still present.

Please let me know how flush the system or do whatever so I can upload.

Help with File:Jackmcbrayer enhanced.jpg

I uploaded this photo and it didn't pass the license review, because on Flickr it's All Rights Reserved. However, the original (File:Jackmcbrayer.jpg) was uploaded here to Commons under GFDL (which was relicensed to CC-BY-SA 3.0) and approved by OTRS. I uploaded the derived picture under the same approved license, and like I said, it didn't pass review. Help!

Article still flagged despite sources put in place - how can I change that?

Hi dear team, I wrote an article de:Esra Inal a few years ago, without citations. The article got flagged for lack of documentation, and need for improvement. In February of 2020 I added sources and citations, but this didn`t change the status of the article. Can anyone help me about this? I`m at a loss... It is a picture of the Archangel Michael. It looks to be a fairly modern picture - as if 20th century.
It shows the Archangel standing, illuminated in golden or fiery light, both wings upraised, unsheathed sword in left hand, right hand gesturing as if to say "Depart", hair blown to right as if in the wind, against a background where smoke is rising to the sky, and craggy mountains.

Do you mean this image? It seems to match your description. It's not signed but it looks like a quite modern painting. I'd say it is late 20th-century or 2000s which would make it ineligible for upload at Commons. Also, it's all over the internet. I don't know the original artist though or where the original artwork can be found. It is a pity that the original work cannot be traced. It is a powerful painting and the artist should be made known. Where might be the best place to try? Import WW2 pictures taken by US Army but listed as copyrighted on Flickr

When trying to populate the following category [Category:V-2-site_Sottevast], I searched from WW2 material and came up with the following "copyrighted" pictures on flickr (https://www.flickr.com/search/?text=sottevast+v2) I was wondering if it was ok to upload all the WW2 pictures to Commons (all but the first one obviously that seems to be a recent one).

I am also trying to rename this picture which is wrongfully linked with WW2 site Brécourt ✓ Done (@Chriusha: )

Can I publish my own figure published in open access journal?

Hi! I am a coauthor of the paper "The Critical Raw Materials in Cutting Tools for Machining Applications: A Review" https://doi.org/10.3390/ma13061377 This is an open access article.

Undeletions request

I am surprised that a photograph of some text should be copyrighted. I always thought that such items can be shown in wikimedia. File:SNCF COVID-19 Je me lave (sans l'eau).jpg seems a good demonstration of the COVID-19 activities in France. The 2nd source https://www.flickr.com/photos/187552211@N04/49686705221 is licensed "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/", which is prohibited for files on WMF projects by the WikiMedia Foundation Licensing Policy Resolution of 23 March 2007 because it contains an "nc" or "nd" clause, prohibiting commercial use or use in derivative works, and is therefore not free enough for any WMF project, including this one. See also Commons:Licensing/Justifications. File:Faizal Kottikollon.jpg has been deleted. @5477vinadi: Almost certainly not permitted on commons, unless she has released it under a specific free license that is compatible with our licensing requirements.

Is this picture public domain?

Is this picture public domain that could be uploaded to Commons? It was taken in France during WWII. Same picture, but in color. I'd prefer to use the color one for a possible new article on the giant. Is it copyright free in either the English Wikipedia or German Wikipedia? @Doug Coldwell: The second version is watermarked "© TomWren/BNPS". The first version's caption says it was taken in Calais, France in 1944. COM:CRT/France depends on the lifetime of the photographer. Jakob, the giant, is wearing the same German Army uniform as in the above B & W picture. The soldier between them is a photographer and he is standing at the correct position and angle for taking the B & W photograph of above. Notice the bare trees in the background of both pictures and the landscape, so that identifies it as the same place at the same moment in time - the capture of the German giant. You can see British Corporal Bob Roberts at chest level of giant Jakob Nacken in both pictures, so both these pictures were taken within minutes of each other in 1944. Notice tool belt on Roberts in both. You can tell this was a posed picture set up by the British Army photographer for propaganda purposes. The photographer had Roberts frisk the giant Jakob Nacken and stepped about six feet to his left and took the B & W photo. Since it was taken by a British Army soldier then I believe it falls under this template "{PD-Scan|1=PD-UKGov|category=}", making it public domain. This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. @Jeff G.: I understand what you are saying of COM:CRT/France, however it was NOT Tom Wren that took the B & W picture. He is the one that colorized it later on (21st century). It was originally a B & W picture. The color photography of cameras in the field were not to that degree of color capability in technology at that point in time of 1944. It says in COM:CRT/France that Anonymous works: 70 years after publication (if author never disclosed). That means the copyright expired in 2014 on the B & W picture. The picture taker is identified as The comedy moment when Jakob was taken prisoner and searched by 5ft 6ins tall Bob was caught on camera by one of Bob’s giggling comrades. The colour image is indeed merely a colourised version of the black and white image. This is being done more and more for both still and moving images. As an example I watched a well colourised WWII documentary on Netflix recently and the quality is rather good. However, the colour version probably obtains a new copyright due to the work involved. As the image was taken by a British Army photographer, I suggest the image copyright is determined by Crown copyright which would use the template {{PD-UKGov}}. Any takers? I've taken a map from here and edited it and uploaded it to Commons. The original license is (which can be found on the web page) is "Free for Commercial and Personal Use (attribution appreciated!)". I added the link to the original file as the source and set the author as the website (simplemaps.com). But now the file might be deleted because it doesn't have sufficient info on its copyright status. What should I do? Thanks.

Deleting Image Evaluation Test Targets of scanned books?

While sorting the content of Category:A history of the cavalry from the earliest times, I stumbled upon a mass of Image Evaluation Test Target images, probably resulting out of the scan. Do we need to keep those or can they be deleted? But for the others there could some category Image evaluation or similar as subcat for Evaluation (or where it better suits) be created. We never know, what other people may find useful. insinfestation in a human host

My question has a couple of specific divisions. First: When being stung by a wasp or hornet can a person become a host to it's offspring and are there instances where the human (host) can become a regular site for the insect to continue breeding, in it's host? I have read where a wasp can become misled by pheromones' in a human with IBS/D as they resemble those of a female wasp leaving a trail when exiting the larval stage?

Second: When ingesting a subsequent water contaminated by toilet flies can they continue using the tubes established by the previous insects devising? Can adult toilet flies set up residence in the small intestines and continue breeding?

Third: I have taken samples of the first infestation and have gotten carapace pieces that are hard, black and shiny.I have gotted front legs that are transparent along with wing parts being also transparent almost lumenesque.They had trails of a vermillion color leading to indentions around which eruptions would develop. Under suction I drew several samples of a black thick fluid. If splattered on the skin it would immediately dissolve into the skin leaving no signs. Unfortunately, my suction device would crush the solid parts of the sample, leaving only the afore mentioned parts.

Last: I have been suffering with this since August 2019. It is now march 2020. I have noticed that the maggots have changed size and become much more numerous. I found that I had been drinking water infested with toilet flies from September 2020. They have ran rampant all over my body from the top of my head to my toes, literally dissolving the tissue of my toes. Particularly painful are the inroads made into my joints. I have had seven layers of pupae(?) from my big toe with long tubes being extruded from the end leaving a soft pliable tissue through which I can feel the bone of my big toe quite plainly. I was unable to convince my primary care giver until this point and now feel that I need more answers. I have een diagnosed with unaccounted for pulmonary fibrosis. There is a more medical term that slips my mind as with the medical term for a wasp that uses hosts for it's young. Is there any way to see if these occurrences are related as both leave fibrous masses in the tissues? @Mcdaniil: Please see Commons:Upload. Regarding overwriting photos, you can currently only do that for your own files. For others, you can't currently overwrite them because you are not yet autoconfirmed. To become autoconfirmed, you need to wait for 4 days and do some edits. You can also request to become confirmed now at COM:RFR though, but it will only be granted in special, rare cases. Once you become autoconfirmed/confirmed though please read COM:OVERWRITE first to understand what's acceptable to overwrite and what's not (and should be uploaded as a new file instead). Copyright help regarding File:Luxembourg Space Agency EtienneSchneider JasonDunn MarcSerres.jpg

Hey all. I uploaded this file yesterday but had a question about the copyright. This file comes direct from the Luxembourg Government website. According to their legal page, "Unless otherwise stated, the reproduction of other content types (photos, videos, audio files, animations, graphics, etc.) is authorised free of charge, subject to the mention of the source as well as the mention of the copyright and the author indicated, where appropriate, near the content." What tag do I apply to this file to ensure it has the appropriate copyright? There is no PD-Luxembourg tag.

  • "Free of charge" is nice and all, but I don't see any indication there that derivative works are permitted. And certainly "free of charge" is not necessarily "public domain".     • Hey Jmabel, thanks for you reply. But I'm not talking about a derivative work, only a copy. The file is completely unedited. By Wikimedia's own definition "A derivative work is one which is not only based on a previous work, but which also contains sufficient new, creative content" and "In either case, unless the underlying work is in the public domain or there is evidence that the underlying work has been freely licensed for reuse (for example, under an appropriate Creative Commons license), the original creator of the work must explicitly authorize the copy". The quote I copied from the Luxembourg government website explicitly says "the reproduction...is authorised...subject to mention of the copyright". I'm uploading a copy of the image to Commons, and wish to indicate the source and the copyright. However, I'm unsure of which tag to use and how to apply it. Hey! I hope that all is well with you. I have a question about a page that I am working on in my sandbox. I had uploaded several pictures of which I did not have the correct rights to use. I received that notification this afternoon and deleted the offending content. However, I was able to get in contact with the content's owner and they have now granted me permission to use the images. I was wondering how I should go about uploading the pictures again and validating the proof required? I made a quick 2-character edit; much more was changed

I (Automeris) made some sort of mistake on the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States page and I need help fixing it.

I thought a caption for a graphic on the coronavirus page had been changed without the graphic being updated, so I restored the caption. It turns out I was wrong, and I put it back. My first edit was changing a "26" to a "18". My second edit was changing a "18" to a "26".

I notice that my first edit changed the size of the page substantially, and I compared that edit to the previous edit. The diff encompassed many changes I didn't make, nor would even know how to make. I don't want to blindly undo those changes, because they could be legitimate changes somehow credited to my edit instead of another edit. They are far from random, and occur throughout the document.

I have no idea what is happening, and I don't want to mess around with things I don't understand. Most of what I do on Wikipedia is correct typos or add links to other Wikipedia pages where appropriate, and I don't usually log in for that.

@Automeris: I presume you are talking about this edit to en:2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States. It looks like you had an old version of the article open in your browser and edited that. However other people had edited the article in the mean time and your edits the accidentally reverted their changes. There should have been a warning that you are editing an old version of the article.

Autotranslate message in Chinese

One of the files I uploaded was just marked for speedy deletion. In the e-mail I got about this, the notification was in Chinese. I checked the actual comment left on my talk page, and it was in English. It turns out the comment is using the autotranslate template, and the message appears in English when I actually view my talk page. But why is it in Chinese in the e-mail?   1. If I want use my own photo, how do I do it? It has to be clicked by another person although it maybe part of my work. If I can use, what licensing should I use?
  2. If I want to use a picture which I found on the internet and do not know the licensing of it, can I upload and use that picture by adding my content to it, say add text to the image, crop the image, or something like that?

Without holding the copyright yourself I'm afraid you cannot upload such images. We would need permissions coming directly from the copyright holders. Also, I suppose that many of these images would not be in our project scope.     • @Anasskoko: Basically OK. 2 issues: (1) There are an awful lot of very similar pictures; in the future, please be a little more selective about what you upload, we really don't need 3 or 4 nearly identical shots, when you have this pick the best of them. (2) It looks like you still need to learn more about categories. I suggest reading Commons:Categories. 2 things in particular about categories: (2a) when you have a specific category, we don't need the less specific category so, for example, if you have Category:Kaduna you don't need Category:Nigeria or Category:Kaduna State, or if you have Category:Mosques in Nigeria you don't need Category:Mosques. (2b) with this many photographs of one mosque, you should certainly create a category for the mosque. The relevant parent categories go on the category for the mosque; then the individual photos just use the category for the mosque to cover everything that would be true for all photographs of that mosque. - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Old photo of a public figure

I came across an old photo of a Civil War Colonel on Ancestry.com that would be ideal for use on his Wikipedia page, George Washington Kirk. The photo is freely shared on Ancestry.com, and is over 150 years old. Can the photo be used on Wikipedia since it is a public figure, over 150 years old, and the original photographer cannot grant permission?

If the photographer signed the copyright over to you, just send a copy of the document transferring the rights according to the instructions at COM:OTRS (and be clear what photo you are talking about; you aren't being clear here, and I don't feel like doing detective work right now). I am afraid we do not have free images of Hanna Alström at Commons. The files that you uploaded were copyrighted and non-free, so I had to delete them. Also a search of other files online did not show any photographs with a free licence. So you would have to wait until someone releases a portrait under a free licence. I suggest contacting the club and ask them to send an email to the OTRS team stating that they release the logo under a free license of their choice (like CC-BY-SA-4.0). I work on a project where I want to query images around a point(map location) and display the "Location" and "Object location" if available. I currently have this API query:

@Abhishek009kk: You can nominate them for deletion via deletion request. I suggest installing VisualFileChange first, then using that to nominate all of your pictures at once. Pink Dot SG

I would like to place a more recent photo of the gay festival, Pink Dot, in Singapore in the writeup. The photo in the writeup is from way back in 2009 and shows a small gathering whereas today the festival is attended by far more people.

PDF uploads

Hello. I am digitizing and uploading several United States antebellum period manuscripts and speeches to Wikisource, which are all in the public domain being over 150 years old (just to head that off at the pass). I am attempting to follow Wikisource's directions for uploading the original image scans, which say PDF format is acceptable, but when I attempt to upload a PDF document to Commons, the upload fails because it says it isn't a recognized format. Obviously the Wikisource directions are wrong in this case; is there a way to get these scans onto the wiki? Rogue 9 (talk) 14:21, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Re-saving the document using Acrobat resolved the issue. Thanks for your help. Load and use an image on behalf of a friend ?

hello helpdesk, I have not been able to find a simple answer in the masses of information out there!

I am not sure how best to proceed with loading an image on behalf of a friend who is not comfortable with wikipedia/wikicommons, whereas I am partially so.

  • The photo is suitable for inclusion in a wikipedia article and notable; and the author agrees that this is so.
  • The author agrees to the photo being freely used, and I have a mail from him to that effect (and viva voce agreement)
  • The photo has already been displayed on a web site, but there is no explicit statement of image-rights on that site.
  • I feel that if this image is re-used, some due acknowledgement should be given to the author/photographer. [clarified: see 21:06 30-Mar below]
  • Furthermore, the author is French, in France, and we both understand that some aspects of copyright differ in various jurisdictions.

@Jwikip: I believe you has misunderstood User:廣九直通車. He was not telling you that you could do this. He was probably trying to lead you gently to why it is not so simple.
We need clear permission for a specific license, coming from the person who owns the copyright, which in this case would almost certainly be the photographer. (We also will need the photographer's name or alias for an author credit, but that is a different matter; first we need to focus on rights.)
Please understand that while "suitable and notable for inclusion in a wikipedia article" means we'd be happy to have it if the rights can be sorted out, it does nothing about those rights. In particular, Commons accepts only images that allow derivative works and allow commercial use. Unless the author has a specific license in mind, I recommend {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, which retains the right of attribution, so reusers are required to acknowledge the author.
Is the web site where the photo is displayed clearly under control of the copyright holder? If so, by far the simplest way to resolve this is for them to indicate the relevant license there, and that can then be cited as a source.
Otherwise, we need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS. It is by far simplest if this can be initiated by the copyright holder. If that is impossible: you say "I have a mail from him". If it is a physical mail and clearly states a particular license, scan it and send per OTRS. If it is an email, and if for some reason you cannot get the original sender / copyright-holder to initiate the process, then make sure that when you write to OTRS you cc the original sender, so that it is clear that he is informed and that the OTRS team can work through any issues with him. It should be OK if this all needs to happen in French rather than English, there are certainly francophones on the OTRS team. - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

In response to your responses and questions:
  • The web site in question (which is in French) does not currently display a statement about licence for photos.
  • My friend is in charge of photos on the www-site and he regularly loads his own photos to it.
  • The photo pages on the site show the photographer's name.
  • I am now aware of OTRS and digesting all that info.
  • I note that OTRS also exists in French so I will point my friend towards that, before we decide how to proceed.
Please note that I have simplified (see italics) the fourth point in my initial question above, as it was badly expressed and confusing.

@Jwikip: If your friend controls the site, then they probably can simply create an otherwise unlinked page on the site that just shows this photo and indicates the license he is granting, and you can use that as your source and skip OTRS. I tend to view OTRS as nearly a last resort: it's a slow process that requires a lot of work by volunteers.
(Also, perhaps I misunderstood, but when you wrote, "I will load the photo which is authored (and photographed) by my friend" I took that as a statement that you were about to proceed. @Jmabel: I understood that you had misunderstood :) pas de problème.
The www-site in question belongs to a non-profit organisation, not to my friend; the photos he manages are not only his own (although the particular photo we are talking about is his own). He is not particularly comfortable with computing in general, even if he loads photos to the site and creates the relevant pages.

Using Pictures and Artwork with Artist's permission

I would like to use a logo and pictures for a music artist page. I have been given permission by the artist to use the band logo, album artwork, and pictures of the group. @Juliette86: For the images to be used here, the creator needs to give them a license that meets certain criteria. It's not enough to give permission to only use the images on Wikipedia. You'll need to get them to post the license on their webpage or image stream, or have them e-mail their statement to COM:OTRS. If they can't or won't do that, you may be able to upload the images to Wikipedia (not Commons) as "fair use" (see en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:12, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Also: (1) we need a specific license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, not a vague permission. (2) Don't presume that the musician owns copyright on graphic art. That is likely to be retained by the visual artist. - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Copyright issue

Hi,

Commons users uploaded many Peter (Pieter) Snayers paintings they got from Museo del Prado in Spain under Public Domain.

This museum only allows to download files but not in their original quality.

I need to use parts of this painting to illustrate articles about fortifications, can I make a screenshot of the high def file on the museum website and place it also under Public Domain ?

  • @Arflhn: I'm not totally sure I followed what you are asking. Is this a question about uploading images on Commons, or about something else?
  • You can't put something you don't own in the public domain. Either it is already in the public domain or it isn't.
  • When you say "to illustrate articles," do you mean in Wikipedia (or some other WMF project) or do you mean in something you are publishing elsewhere?
  • The museum does not own copyright on these paintings. The paintings are in the public domain. If you download images of these paintings and do whatever with them, you may be violating the terms of use of their website, but I do not see where there would be a copyright violation.
    • From en:Sweat_of_the_brow#European_Union: "In 2019, the European Union adopted the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. Article 14 of the directive states that reproductions of works of visual art that are in the public domain cannot be subject to copyright or related rights, unless the reproduction is an original creative work."
    • You would be at your own risk for violating the terms of use of a website, but I don't believe Commons would delete on that basis. Note that the last might not be entirely good for you: if you got sued by the Prado and they wanted the pictures gone from Commons, I am not at all sure Commons would delete on that basis.
  • The only other consideration I can see -- and you might want to wait a day or two for someone to weigh in on this -- is if Commons has some sort of relationship with the Prado as a GLAM and as part of that may have agreed not to host certain images that the Prado does not want hosted, in exchange for some other access (e.g. being able to use their internal databases). That's for use on Wikipedia.fr of course.

I don't get it, if it's in the public domain there cannot be any "term of use" otherwise it's not public domain ?

  • @Arflhn: They can make any terms of use of their website that they want. They can say you have to swear you are over 18. They can say you have to swear you don't live in a country under some sanction. Etc. It has no bearing on the copyright of an image, but it might have a bearing on the contractual obligations of users of the website. Just like if they don't allow photography, and you went into the Prado and photographed a painting, there wouldn't be any copyright issue, but you might be violating the terms on which you bought your ticket. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Obtaining Wikipedia's 2019 year-end video

Per here, I'd like to use the video uploaded by the Wikimedia Foundation to YouTube here. Rather ironically, I'm fairly sure that video is not on Commons (it's at least not in Category:Wikipedia videos) or freely licensed anywhere else. Correct license and authorship tags for images

I have received the following notice:

"Hi. You appear to have uploaded a number of images recently where the licence and ownership/authorship claim is labelled as "own work". Please consider reviewing and revisiting these licence and authorship tags. While I'm sure its just an oversight, and while I mean this (of course) as a lighthearted way of highlighting the concern, it seems implausible that you are (at once) the artist Thomas Robinson (d.1810), an illustrator for Punch magazine (fl.1881), and stamp designer of 21st century postage stamps (c.2015) :D Please consider reviewing the licence tags previously applied to these. One of the images is a detail I have edited from one of many images available of the original c. 1805 oil painting. Can this be used? What would be the correct procedure?

ManfredHugh It depends on how much work you have done to the image for whether it is classed as its own work for copyright purposes. For example, simply digitising an public domain work does not give you a copyright over the digitalisated image. The same would apply for cropping etc.
Making major edits may give you a copyright, only over the edits. To publish the work, you need to follow Commons:Derivative works - except where there is very minimal use - com:De minimis, you will need permission, or for copyright to expire, for all the component works.
With regards to your last question, work here has to be free in the country of creation, and the USA. To find if something is public domain, usually because copyright protection has expired, check the Commons:Hirtle chart for the USA, and the Commons:International copyright quick reference guide for everywhere else.

Also: even if a work is in the public domain, it is Commons policy to clearly attribute the original author.
In terms of attributing a derivative work, here's a good example: File:Asahel Curtis panorama of vicinity of 2nd Ave and Virginia St, 'the last of Denny Hill', Aug 20, 1907.jpg.
