Featured image of Lady Gaga

How can I find Featured image of Lady Gaga, just only her images? - Chủ đề chọn lọc (talk) 11:18, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Apparently there are no featured pictures of her. I did a search with PetScan where I added both Featured_pictures_on_Wikimedia_Commons and Lady_Gaga as a subset of categories with a depth of 4 subcategories. The result was empty. De728631 (talk) 14:53, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

I need my account to be deleted

Hello I went ahead and created a account on Wiki and due to copyright issues with my university I posted an article and now I am asked to remove it from Wiki can you please assist me removing my article entitled " Theorist". Thank you I await your response — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keshann (talk • contribs) 02:32, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Keshann: There is no such thing as deleting an account. You can just stop using it.
  • Your only upload here is File:Theorist.pdf. Is that what you are talking about? It was recent (29 minutes before you made this request), so if you confirm promptly that is what you want deleted, we can do that as a courtesy. - Jmabel ! talk 03:42, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Strange message from User:Shellwood

I have gotten a couple of strange messages recently, both suggesting my posts were inappropriate. Trouble is, I have not tried to post in years, not since I was mysteriously disallowed. I think my e-mail must be mixed up with someone who is posting currently.

How do I disengage from this ID?

By the way, this page was really hard to find, so hopefully you will find me next time I'm online. There was a reference above and Andrew Wyeth image--I think--saying I had messages. I clicked and was told I'd been censored, but not what the content or the offense had been. The whole thing is pretty strange.

The message today came from: User:Shellwood — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2600:387:8:5:0:0:0:17 (talk) 09:59, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

I think I understand what has happened. The short version is that the comment from Shellwood wasn't really for you and you can ignore it. Think of it like post in a house you've just moved into.
The full details are quite technical. When you connect to Wikipedia, Wikipedia makes a note of where the connection came from (called an IP address). Today, that address was 2600:387:8:5:0:0:0:17. However it looks like your network provider re-uses addresses for different people, so in the past different people have used that address. Some of those people have contributed to Wikipedia, and you can see their contributions at en:Special:Contributions/2600:387:8:5:0:0:0:17. In particular, one of them made a vandalistic change to en:Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau in 2018, and another vandalised en:Tall Girl in September this year. In each case, someone left a note on en:User talk:2600:387:8:5:0:0:0:17 asking them not to do it again. Because Wikipedia had no other way to identify the person who made the edits, when you turned up with the same IP address today it thought you might be them, so it told you about the messages. Of course, you're not them, so you don't need to do anything. Now, as you said, I need to work out how to get you to see this message... --bjh21 (talk) 13:47, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Need Email Address

I have received an email from the owner of an image that I am uploading, that email gives full public access to this image. I need to know who to send this email to in order to allow this image file to be uploaded.

Wikipedia still has made this process way too complicated and obtuse. I had problems 10 years ago, five years ago, three years ago, and now. Please make this process where a person wants to share his images to a writer of a Wikipedia article so that those images are in the public domain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bwisok (talk • contribs) 00:15, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Bwisok: Normally the person granting the permission, not a third party (such as you in this case) should send the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. You can try forwarding it, but with someone in the middle, if the OTRS people decide (for example) that it isn't specific enough about what license is being granted, it is hard for them to sort the matter out. - Jmabel ! talk 03:38, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Löschung eines Eintrages

Hallo,

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ehoeller (talk • contribs) 06:01, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

I uploaded a new image under a creative commons license that incorporates IPCC maps and would like confirmation this is OK

I did some research and I think it is OK to use IPCC climate projection maps in images, but let me know if I'm wrong.

Wikimedia says you cannot use images that are copyrighted to block derivative works. As a rule, the IPCC copyrights their images to block derivative works. See https://www.ipcc.ch/copyright/ for more details.

However, their maps are only displaying data, which is not subject to copyright according to wikimedia discussing derivative works using maps:

"copyright does not protect facts and copyright does not protect systems. Traditional maps are pictorial representations of geographic and demographic facts organized to allow the user to readily understand and easily extract the factual information portrayed. The factual information, such as boundary lines and locations of landmarks, is supposedly unprotected. The organizing principle for presenting the information will often, if not always, be deemed an unprotected system or idea. Thus, many maps will apparently contain only unprotected elements."

Clearly the IPCC is just rendering data, not being creative. Graphs are easy to just re-render in order to avoid copyright issues, but for maps it is more difficult to work around source images.

To make this a bit less abstract, here is the image I created using a couple IPCC maps:

. Is it OK for me to publish that image under a creative commons license? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Efbrazil (talk • contribs) 22:25, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

  • All maps involve creative decisions (e.g. what colors to use). They are certainly copyrightable. And in any case, in NO circumstances can you grant a license to someone else's work. If it's in the public domain, you can reuse it freely, but if it needs a license, only the copyright holder can grant a license. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
    • The wikimedia helpdesk article here explicitly says map colors are not subject to copyright: "The following parts of a map are in the public domain, and may be used freely: Colors: For example, the colors representing area features on a topographic map, such as vegetation (green), water (blue), and densely built-up areas (gray or red). Colors are not copyrightable, either." Since data, colors, and lines on the maps are all not subject to copyright, I think I'm OK, or maybe the article is wrong. Maybe you could edit the helpdesk article to make it clear what part of a risk map is subject to copyright?--Efbrazil (talk) 23:38, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Displays of book/comic/magazine covers

I uploaded a picture I took, File:Gay Manga at BIGGYM, Ikebukuro.jpg, several months ago (mirrored on Imgur here), but the image was deleted with the rationale of "copyright violation". I'm pretty inexperienced with Commons so my question is, did I merely upload the image with an improper license, or are pictures that are displays of book covers just categorically not okay? If it's the latter, it seems like some images like this do exist on Commons, like here and here and here. Morgan695 (talk) 01:41, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Which issue? Ruslik (talk) 17:42, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
@Tom Reedy: I'm not sure you have. If the source is from 1982, how could {{PD-US-not-renewed}} apply? Or are you saying the 1982 source was already using it on that basis, from an earlier source? - Jmabel ! talk 17:51, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
The photo is a detail from a 1933 publicity photograph reproduced in a book of jazz pictures. According to the credits, the photo was in a collection that was subsequently given to Jazz at Lincoln Center upon the death of the collector. I contacted the center to see if they had the photo and to determine the copyright status, but they said they couldn't find it among the collection. Tom Reedy (talk) 20:44, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Deleted template links

I should know this, but if anyone can jog my memory... how can I mass-remove transclusions of a deleted template? Thanks. Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:52, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

@Rodhullandemu: AWB can do this, as can VFC (given the right data). What template?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:04, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks JeffG {{UK postbox}}. Rodhullandemu (talk) 14:22, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
@Rodhullandemu: Concerning that particular template, it has used parameters and ~171 transclusions. It also seems to have a legitimate use. I'd reconsider deletion, with input from people who are using it and who are uploading photos of UK postboxes. The postboxes are not exactly historic places or monuments, but the Royal Mail seems to maintain public info about many of them, which we should not disregard.  — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:06, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: It's arguable that this info could be on Wikidata but the template design is defective as it doesn't properly handle its DEFAULTSORTs. Its creator didn't comment in the DR and hasn't contributed since 9th August. I'm getting fed up of these people coming here with their "good ideas" when they don't know how how things are supposed to work and there are existing practices that they break with their well-intentioned nonsenses. Image deletion/upload

Hi,

My name is Ryan Smith, I am listed on Wikipedia as an English ‘footballer’ and I wish to upload a different image of myself.

Could you kindly tell me how I would go about doing this?

Kind regards,

Ryan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smudger11 (talk • contribs) 21:42, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Smudger11: This can be done either with an existing photo or one taken for this purpose.
  • Either way, we need the photographer (who would own the copyright) to grant a sufficiently free license: one that allows derivative work and commercial use. I personally recommend {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}, which retains the right to be attributed whenever the photo is used.
    • It is legally possible to transfer a copyright, but it's pretty complicated. Unless you want to use a specific photo where this has already happened -- in which case say so, and we can discuss that case -- let's lay that aside.
  • There are three ways that the photographer can make the license clear:
      1. If the image is not previously published anywhere, they can create an account here, upload the photo as "own work", and indicate the appropriate license.
      2. If the image is previously published on a web site or web page (e.g. Flickr account) clearly under the photographer's control, they can indicate the appropriate license there and anyone with an account here can upload it, indicating that as the source and using the same license.
      3. If the image is previously published but the copyright-holder is not in a position to indicate the license in the previous place of publication, as just described, then they will need to go through the process described at COM:CONSENT and COM:OTRS. That is a bit cumbersome, but we need to have some way to prevent just anyone from uploading a photo and saying "Oh, yeah, the guy who took it said this would be OK."
  • I hope that answers your question, if not, please ask whatever followup you need. - Jmabel ! talk 22:38, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Pajz. Those rules are seriously incomprehensible even if you know German: they are written in German legalese. I'd look for a bilingual copyright lawyer, maybe through Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Expert help. HLHJ (talk) 23:56, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
I (again) do not see what that has to do with my request. The "original" of the page is in English. I have updated and improved several sections on the page (see the page history). However, I cannot update/create the translations into German because the current version of the page is not marked for translation. This needs to be done by a translation administrator. I am not a translation administrator. That is why I'm here. — Pajz (talk) 08:17, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Respectfully, if nobody can be bothered to mark updated material for translation, nobody should be surprised that many of the legal assessments on Commons help/policy pages are out of date. First you force non-native speakers of English to update everything in English, then they have to beg you - unsuccessfully! - to enable them to translate their contributions back into their native tongue. This request has been open for more than a week and I've now cleared my desk of the German-language material I originally used for updating the page (which I would have needed for the German version). All in all a most frustrating experience. — Pajz (talk) 08:42, 13 October 2019 (UTC) (The other issue I asked for help with was ignored as well, by the way ... Well, whatever.)

Marked for translation. Honestly, i am not a fan of using the TA extension for such pages but only for widely used one. --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:27, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

uploading photo

I'm just trying to add an upload a personal family photo of my great grandfather Curt Grottewitz to his entry. I have never done this before, and I seem to be stuck in a loop referring me back to help rather than uploading. the first time i tried to upload my scan, it seemed to work, but it needed cropping. which I did. After the crop, the site would not accept the upload, I got stuck in this loop. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tealmp (talk • contribs) 18:45, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Looking at your user uploads, you don't seem to have uploaded anything, Tealmp. Two files cannot be uploaded with the same name, although you can go to the old file's page and click on the link at the bottom that says "Upload a new version of this file". Could that be your problem? HLHJ (talk) 23:33, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

File type problem

I tried improving an image I uploaded myself, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beginning_of_index_of_American_Slavery_As_It_Is,_1839.png

I cropped it, but I cannot upload it to replace this file because the output from the program I used to edit produced (apparently) a jpeg file, and I cannot upload it to replace a png file. I don't know what to do. I wish I could give you a link to the cropped version, but I can't easily figure out how to do that either. Thank you. Deisenbe (talk) 11:11, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Language edit

I want to add some words of kuee language(a tribal language of Odisha, india. Please help regarding this How can I add those words in Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2409:4062:2297:37BC:59F7:2EA:4C3D:104C (talk) 07:54, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

This is Wikimedia Commons, a media repository, and not Wikipedia. You might want to ask at en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Languages for specific input. However, there is an article Kui language (India) at the English Wikipedia. You can edit this article and e.g. add a new section "Vocabulary" below the Phonology section. Then you create a bullet list with the Kui words and their translation to English. See also en:Romansh language or en:North Frisian language for examples. De728631 (talk) 12:14, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
Might also be very welcome in Wiktionary. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
Agreed, I'm sure it would be very welcome in Wiktionary. The English Wiktionary would take the words, and define them in English. But you could also start a Kui Wiktionary, where all the definitions etc. would be in Kui, at the wiki Incubator. The Kui language code is "kxu". HLHJ (talk) 23:53, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

The picture I found about the Star City fire, how to upload safely?

The picture I found about the aftermath of the Star City fire in Pasay, Philippines, on October 2, 2019 is found on Google Images. It's the best I can find, but If i'm not allowed to gather such information from the internet itself, how do I get pictures to upload without infringing their copyrights? I made 2 copyright warnings of Beatless and Logan Paul articles, and I am inexperienced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ROBLOXGamingDavid (talk • contribs) 01:43, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

  • You can't grant rights to other people's work. Period. You can take pictures yourself, you can use pictures that are old enough to be in the public domain, you can convince the owner of the copyright to grant rights, but you can't just grab images that happen to be somewhere on the Internet and license them against the will of the photographer or other copyright-holder. That is what copyright is about. - Jmabel ! talk 15:55, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Wiki love monuments file upload

Regarding wiki loves monuments 2019. I upload three images on Sept. 25 for sites in West Virginia. The uploading seemed to go fine, but they don't appear on the Wiki Monuments interactive map, although they do show up in Commons. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gibsondescom (talk • contribs)

@Gibsondesom: I don't know how the interactive map works, but it doesn't like your files have any machine-readable information about their location. Perhaps you need to add {{Object location|LATITUDE|LONGITUDE}}, with the lat and lon filled out, to their pages. You can easily find the coordinates for the buildings on their Wikidata pages. – BMacZero (🗩) 02:00, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

SVG tooltips

On the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Usa_counties_large.svg, I edited the svg so it had tooltips when you hovered over the counties. I noticed that when I uploaded it, the tooltips did not work. I tried reverting it and when I opened my file up in the revision history, I noticed that the tooltips did work. So I reverted it back to mine and it still did not work. Is it possible that you can delete my last two reverts and also make it so the tooltips work on the map? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DeathHotDog (talk • contribs)

DeathHotDog - sorry, it can't be done as you want it. Mediawiki doesn't serve svg images in thumbnails or articles, it converts to png. This is the reason you can see your tooltips when you look at a file in the revision history, or a link like [1], because in that case your browser is being sent the svg directly and your browser creates the tooltips for your SVG <title> elements. When you view it on the file description page or in an article or other page you are actually viewing a png. There are ways to add annotations to png images with templates, but I think you're going to find most of them quite unwieldy or unworkable with so many narrow areas assigned to so many tooltips. Lots of us wish that it was possible to serve actual svg thumbnails and images to articles and other pages, at least in some cases, but for a combination of reasons Mediawiki has still not made this possible yet. See phab:T208578 for one discussion (and links to some others). -- Begoon 21:46, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

I understand that. What I'm saying is that when I click on the third file down in the revision history it shows the tooltips, but when I click on the first file in the revision history, it doesn't show the tooltips, even though it is the same file. Also when I download the first file and open it up in a text editor, I notice that the code is not the same as mine, rather it is the same as the file posted before mine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DeathHotDog (talk • contribs)

You've only uploaded it once, then reverted, then reverted back to your new one: From the top of the revision history list -
Both the revisions I linked (first and third in the list) show the tooltips and are identical (I diff'ed them in Notepad++), and reached from clicking the thumbnails in the version history.

If that's not what you get from clicking those thumbnails it must be a cache issue - try following w:WP:BYPASS. -- Begoon 23:24, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. It was a cache issue. Can you please still remove my first two reverts as I feel it is unnecessary to have the same file twice and it just kind of bothers me? Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by DeathHotDog (talk • contribs)
I'm glad you solved the cache problem. We don't really delete revisions like that, unless there's a pressing reason that they should not be visible, like copyright or privacy issues, then the audit trail (and links, such as in this discussion, which someone with a similar issue may look at in future) should be preserved, and deleting the revisions wouldn't save any resources anyway - don't worry about it, some file revision histories are hundreds of entries long - it's not an issue at all. Incidentally, the reason this discussion is moved here is that Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems isn't for problems users are having - it's for problems administrators need to be aware of about users, such as persistent copyright violations or disruption - but I can understand why the name might lead to a misunderstanding... How to change user boxes

I just joined WikiMedia Commons a week ago. I saw an advertisement for your competition "Wiki Loves Monuments". So I joined Wiki to participate. I have now made my user page, I have made it as a gallery.
I found that other users had defined user boxes, so I found some I put on my page. But I would like them to be as neutral as possible. Since it is a gallery page, user boxes shouldn't compete with the images about attention. I managed to change the user box that told how long you had been a member, lots of parameters to choose among when it came to that box. So I tried to use the same parameters on the other boxes, but they didn't work.

The boxes I would like to change are:
1) the one telling which country I come from - I would like to get rid of the frame
2) the language box telling that I speak Norwegian (first language) - like to get rid of the colour - and frame if there is any
— Preceding unsigned comment added by 999Vic999 (talk • contribs) 17:12, 6 October 2019 (UTC) 3) the language box telling my level of English - like to get rid of the colour - and frame if there is any
At the moment, the last box telling how long I have been on WikiMedia has got a frame, but I know how to get rid of it, and will do so if I can adjust the other boxes.
Is there any way to do this?

Here is the link to my page (look for the boxes at the bottom): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:999Vic999

Thanks in advance!

Hi 999Vic999, please sign your messages at talk pages and discussion boards like this one by typing four tilde characters: ~~~~. This will automatically add your username and a timestamp.
As to the userboxes, these generic templates like {{User no-N}} should not be changed at all, because they are being used by many different users at once. If you would like to have some personal version of the language templates, you should copy the code of each of these templates into a subpage of your userpage, e.g. User:999Vic999/User no-N. Then you need to edit these subpages according to your liking. I have added the example of the Norwegian box to your user space, so you can link to it from your page like using a regular template: {{User:999Vic999/User no-N}}. The box telling how long you have been at WikiMedia is much easier to handle since it accepts colours as input. {{User since |year=2019 |month=9 |day=29 |imgbg=#FFFFFF |bgcolor=#FFFFFF |border=none}} will do the trick. Unfortunately {{User Norway}} can't be changed this easily since it is built from many different sub-templates. I'm trying to add an optional parameter for the border colour but I can't seem to make it work. De728631 (talk) 19:16, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
@999Vic999: Thanks to user Perhelion, I have now also adjusted the "User Norway" template. You can use {{User Norway |border-c=none}} to disable the border. De728631 (talk) 21:02, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

newspaper photograph

I would like to upload to the Commons a photograph published in a newspaper in 1924. To my knowledge, it does not currently exist on the Internet. It is a scanned photo from the original hard-copy. Do I have authority to publish this photo to the Commons? I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Owencasey (talk • contribs) 20:04, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

@Owencasey: If it is a United States newspaper, you can wait until 1 January 2020 and you will certainly be able to upload it as {{PD-US-expired}}. If the paper does not have a copyright notice, you can upload it right now as {{PD-US-no notice}}. If it's not a United States newspaper it could be more complicated - please let us know what country it's from. – BMacZero (🗩) 01:48, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Earlier, I posted the question below, and BMacZero responded. @Owencasey: I've moved your reply up to this section to keep it with the rest of the discussion. Assuming the newspaper was the first publication of the photograph, then the rules are in COM:IRELAND. Copyright expires 70 years after the death of the photgrapher. If the photograph was published anonymously and the identity of the photographer didn't become known within 70 years of publication, then copyright expired 70 years after publication --bjh21 (talk) 17:00, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Uploading Project Gutenberg book diagrams en-masse?

This book contains a lot of useful diagrams, many already on Commons. The HTML format has them all neatly separated out with captions. Is there any way to upload them in a semi-automated way? Should I be asking on Wikisource? HLHJ (talk) 00:20, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Is there any evidence this is licensed appropriately for Commons? I think PG is incorrect in claiming it is PD in the United States, since it dates from no earlier than 1929, and since it's a British work, you'd need to figure out when William Fairham died for Commons.--Prosfilaes (talk) 12:18, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
Yes, and I actually searched for that very information earlier, and could find nothing much beyond some guys on a woodworking enthusiasts' forum discussing the fact that they didn't know, and had been unable to find out, when William Fairham died either... -- Begoon 12:42, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Information on what copyright status the photographer/creator of the photo has licensed it under is needed. Unless the photo has a copyright status of public domain or is free licensed by the copyright holder, it cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. See Commons:Licensing and Commons:Scope for more information. If that has been taken care of, images can be uploaded, see Commons:Upload. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 21:09, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
Hi David. In this case we also require proof of the copyright status. If the copyright has been waived by the original copyright holder, or they have granted a free licence for anyone to use the photo for any purpose (also outside Wikipedia), we need to get an email from the copyright holder. Depending on their professional relationship, this is either the original photographer or UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center. Please see COM:OTRS for more instructions. Once the email has been sent, you may upload the image and add a text string {{subst:OP}} to the file page at Commons. This will mark the file as "permission email check pending".
On another note, when you add the photo to the Wikipedia article, please be also sure to disclose your possible Wikipedia:conflict of interest, and in case you get paid for editing the article/inserting the picture, you also need to disclose this fact. Please see en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure for more information. De728631 (talk) 21:20, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Maria-Isabel, Wikimedia Commons is a website for hosting freely re-usable images and media files. This page is for asking questions about using this website. I'm afraid we are not really in a position to offer you help with finding people, but perhaps an idea might be to contact previous employers to see if they can help you. Adding photos into word file

Should I have included my photos within the word file before sending to you? I had supposed I could add them in at a later stage. If I upload them separately now, how will you know where to place them inside the file I have already sent. Should I add them into my file on my computer and resend the file? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carol Prentice (talk • contribs) 19:31, 8 October 2019 (UTC) (UTC)

The only file you have uploaded so far is File:McDONALD'S FRENCH FRIED CHIPS, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 1960'S.pdf which is being discussed for deletion. The problem here is that we generally do not host such lists even if they include pictures. This is not how Commons and Wikipedia work. Wikimedia Commons is a repository for media like images and videos. The text files we do include here are being used as sources for a few select projects like Wikisource: or Wikibooks and also need to have been published before. We do not host original research at Commons. Lists like the one you uploaded should always be coded directly into a Wikipedia article, while Commons will gladly accept the individual images so these can then be integrated into Wikipedia as well. Commercial use by a third party of an image of my ancestor's painting which is already on Wikimedia

An image of my ancestor's painting (Joseph Austin Benwell, Great Sphinx of Giza, in German, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Austin_Benwell_Rastende_bei_der_gro%C3%9Fen_Sphinx_von_Gizeh_1886.jpg ) has been uploaded to Wikimedia. It is in the public domain, as he died over 70 years ago. I own the original artwork/painting, and have done since I bought it at auction in 2015. However, this same image is now being used by major art-reproduction and image/product selling companies both in the UK and USA, for profit. It is likely it is the same image, as it is the same 4.51mb size, and has German text (relating to when it was in an auction catalogue to be sold by auction by the Palais Dorotheum, Vienna in 2011 and 2014). It does not seem right that commercial companies are now copying this image of my painting, and selling prints/products etc for monetary gain, when they either do not own the original, or have just copied an image from your Wikimedia website, (or possibly the auction house website). My question is- Can this Wikimedia image of my ancestor's painting be sold for commercial profit by third party major image-selling companies/businesses, without my permission or the permission of the original auction house that took this photographic image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmancestry (talk • contribs) 10:19, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

It depends to some extent on where the seller is based, but the short answer is "yes". That's what Public Domain means. The only relevant copyright would be that of the auction house's photograph, but the law appears to be, and is shared by the Wikimedia Foundation, that a "faithful reproduction" of an uncopyrighted work is also not copyrightable. Sorry, but there's nothing that we can do here. You could approach the seller and invite them to take a better photograph and negotiate a royalty for so doing, but I'm not sure that they would be willing to do that. Sorry. Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:29, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I still think these large companies are very unethical in their business practices. I wonder if Wikimedia Commons could restrict the image size for images submitted to them, to say 1mb or less. That would make it more difficult for these commercial companies and their contributors to 'pirate' the images for their own profit, as a smaller file size would not reproduce so well on posters, tea-towels etc. Also, could you put 'All Rights Reserved' on certain images, so they cannot be used by unscrupulous people for commercial gain? Another organisation (Watercolour World, a registered charity, educational) has both these 'safeguards', and there do not seem to be any issues with this approach. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmancestry (talk • contribs) 10:55, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

I think most of us disagree with your analysis of ethics. Your family had exclusive rights for most of a century. Now it is free for anyone to use, for tea-towels, posters, whatever. Wikimedia's Vision Statement is "Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment." That includes these companies, who make such items available as a service to everyone, in the best spirit of capitalism.
I do find it a bit ironic that we're having this discussion over a painting of someone else's sculpture. If that life+70 (or similar rules) don't apply, then why is the Sphinx fair game?--Prosfilaes (talk) 12:12, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Many thanks for your reply- I see your point and I have duly been taken down a peg (or two)! However, I would just like to point out that my family never had the painting, as my ancestor was a hard-up artist who had to sell his works. I only just bought it back into the family in 2015 at great expense (to an OAP), so I was surprised to see how all these large companies are using the image for profit. I believe images of historic paintings such as these should be "All rights reserved" i.e. used for non-commercial research and private study use only, so I suppose we will amicably have to agree to differ!

As an addendum, please note the following concern which is already on Wikimedia: - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:How_Alamy_is_stealing_your_images. These companies are selling 'free' public domain images that are obtained from sites such as Wikimedia, watermarking them as if they are their own, and selling 'personal use' and 'website use' images under a type of licence to which they are not entitled. They are trying to fool customers, as the images should be free. Other users also think this is unethical (so I'm not the only one). I will follow this up on the above wikimedia page.

And part of the way of opposing that is not putting "All Rights Reserved" on our copy, but instead maintaining that it is free and should be free for people to use.--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:40, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

  • Wikimedia Commons doesn't have articles. Wikipedias do. While Commons and Wikipedia collaborate on subjects that are within Project Scope, there can be cases where a particular image is not appropriate for Commons (eg, not free licensed) but might be the subject of a valid article on Wikipedia. So the short answer is no, not necessarily. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:31, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

@Yungdrail: Typically, no, you cannot. Exceptions would be:
  • If it's old enough to be in the public domain. How old will vary with country; you didn't say what country.
  • If the copyright holder has granted a free license (unlikely, but imaginable), and you can demonstrate that.
  • If it is so simple as to be ineligible for copyright (e.g. a simple tricolor with no emblem).
There are probably other exceptions, but the answer remains: typically, no. Jmabel ! talk 06:26, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

Someone has hacked my password and (probably) logged in as me!

When I should log in to my account here today, I couldn't - username and password didn't fit. But I remembered my password, so someone must have messed with it, and probably logged in as me by creating a new password. Are there any other possibilities?

If there has been any activity on my account or with my user-ID since yesterday evening at about nine o'clock (Norwegian time), it wasn't me. Is it possible to look into things like this? Can I do it myself?

Sorry to say - I have been hacked before, so it isn't the first time. There is this meaningless hate, hate that tries to ruin other peoples image and life. Love is for haters a word they don't understand. How to conquer hate? Love! Love is the only "weapon" that is stronger than hate!

I was anyway going to say some words here on the help desk today. This time not to ask for help, but to say thanks for great help! I have received such marvelous good help here at the helpdesk, so I am really so greatful. How to express that? We all have those tiny little red hearts on our pages when we visit other users pages (upper right corner). Be clever to use those!

Inspired by the great help I experienced here yesterday (and also have experienced here earlier), I made a star symbol directly showing appreciation for great help to great helpers. I show it here so everyone that are experiencing great help here can use it if they want to. Thank to all good helpers here!

Flickr private photo

Hello, my friend has a BY-SA photo on Flickr that I would like to put on a Portuguese Wikipedia page. But his photos are private, only friends and people he follows can view it.

If I upload the photo here, the image will not be verified by the bot and its copyright status will be undeterminable on Wikimedia.

What should I do? Can I upload his BY-SA Flickr's photo? gabibb2 00:49, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Sounds like you need to go through COM:OTRS/COM:CONSENT. At the very least, someone from the OTRS team has to be somehow able to verify the license, even if the rest of us can't do so for ourselves. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

I noticed that someone added the "Uploaded via Campaign:wlm-tw" category on the category page of Category:Baozhong Yimin Temple. Interestingly, the same problem also occurs with Category:Old House of Family Hsiang, Magong. I am confused, so ask on User talk:紀橋 first. She say: Those pictures (項得生古宅) were taken for "Wiki Loves Monuments Taiwan 2018", just uploaded via the page of Wiki Loves Monuments, that's it. If so, then I don't understand why she are adding "Category:Uploaded via Campaign:wlm-tw" to "Category:Old House of Family Hsiang, Magong". Therefore, I want to ask, can we add Category:Uploaded via Campaign:wlm-tw to the category page?--Kai3952 (talk) 18:35, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

@Kai3952 and 紀橋: It would be better to add Category:Uploaded via Campaign:wlm-tw to each individual image and remove it from the category. Someone in the future could upload an image of that building outside of WLM - in that case, it wouldn't make sense for the "Uploaded" category to be implicitly applied to it by the parent category – BMacZero (🗩) 01:52, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
@BMacZero: per 紀橋's reply, she say: So? What shall i do next? Remove it? And this problem can be resolved? I think she doesn't know what happened(or, say, she doesn't know where the problem is), and it's possible that she will do the same mistake again. Do you have an idea of how to communicate with 紀橋?--Kai3952 (talk) 06:20, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Ghetty Images

Hello, I wanted to use a Ghetty image for a Wikipedia edit. Is this allowed? Ghetty posted this on their website regarding their images: Common uses include: Newspapers and magazines (except for covers), editorial broadcasts, documentaries, non-commercial websites, blogs and social media posts illustrating matters of public interest — Preceding unsigned comment added by DeedraDallas (talk • contribs) 05:36 2019-10-11 (UTC)

@DeedraDallas: Thank you for your question, please do not upload such images, as Getty Images sue users of their images without permission actively. Also, per COM:L, all media files on Wikimedia Commons must be licensed for any purpose, including commercial purposes. If such images are uploaded, they will be regarded as copyright violation and will be deleted, and serious offenders may be blocked. Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 13:07, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Yesterday I wrote about someone else than me having changed my password - today my userpage was empty

I have now deleted what I wrote here to avoid exposing a real user negatively.
The matter has been solved. I send a question to the user in case it was a real one, and got an answer that the person did not know what he / she was doing, believing that he / she deleted something on his / her phone.
So the system is quite vulnerable when it's that easy to empty another users page contents by accident.
Two such events two days in a row - first messing with my password so I couldn't log in (and that cannot be explained - I did remember my password) and then the day after my page was emptied, it seemed quite strange - but nothing is better than the last event being done by accident. Hopefully it will not happen again! Having experienced what hackers are capable of, it was an easy association to make.
The whole episode inspired me to create and upload a human rights symbol, so it wasn't to bad after all :-)
999Vic999 (talk) 17:11, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

999Vic999, neither the blanking of your userpage nor the 2 mails have anything to do with "hacking" or someone else knowing your password.
1) If your userpage is not protected, then anybody can change its content. However, you can easily revert such changes, as you have done already. In case such undesired edits by others happen more often you can ask any admin to protect your userpage.
2) As you have email-contact on your userpage active, anybody with an user-account can send you an email. He/She does not need to know your email address and by sending an email he/she does not get to know it, except when you send an reply from your personal email account. 3) The 2nd email likely came automatically from Wikimedia-Commons notification system to notify you about this change of your userpage, likely because you have activated this function in the email options of your own user settings. --Túrelio (talk) 18:28, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
Túrelio, you write that "if my user page is not protected, then anybody can change its content."
Is there anything I can do myself to protect my user page, or is that a task for administrators only?
999Vic999 (talk) 19:57, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
No, that's a task requiring "higher rights", which only sysops, like admin have. But, if there is need, everyone will help you. --Túrelio (talk) 19:59, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

How to center symbol and link on user page - and more

I have made a little "at" symbol as a mail sign for my user page, and I have a mailto link following it. I would like to center the two on the page - in such a way that it will look centered on all screens. It's probably a simple task, but I cannot figure out how to do it.

Do anything like a manual for coding wiki pages exist?

And then there is another issue. Since I saw that another user already had used the "at" sign i made, and really needed a bigger sized image, I made seven bigger images in different sizes and uploaded them. It's the same symbol, but I named them differently (different numbers). Now each of them stand alone with a text telling that it's the only resolution (the only size) for the image. Have I done anything wrong when I uploaded? I have seen other symbols being shown with different sizes. Can I do anything about this, or is this a task for administrators? There are now 8 different files of this png symbol in different sizes.

Thanks in advance!

@999Vic999: Do you mean like this, or something else?
And you should not generally make the same image at different sizes. Make it the biggest relevant size, and then you can do like this with markup:

Hi Vic, it seems like you should take a look at en:Help:Pictures or its more basic equivalent no:Hjelp:Bilder. Also you shouldn't code everything into tables since there are similar built-in Wiki functionalities that require less effort. A few quick tips: The <gallery></gallery> tag lets you create a gallery of your uploads (code examples at meta:Help:Images and other uploaded files#Gallery),

and the code for resizing images works like where ...px indicates the desired width of the image.

As you can see, the disadvantage with upscaling images like this is that they may appear overly pixelated. So you may either upload a larger basic version with a smooth appearance, or use a vector image format instead, like SVG. De728631 (talk) 23:58, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

JPG file format for images, GIF file format for vectors and then PNG file format if neither fits.
Neither JPG nor GIF take transparency and GIF is not good at gradients - so when I work with vectors, I mostly use PNG.
But it would be much better if there was a file format that really would show vector graphics perfectly in every browser.
It used to be like the SVG file format wasn't supported by many browsers. Has it changed?
This is what happened when I uploaded the "at" file I made in different browsers. (I tried both Inkscape svg and standard svg file
format in all the three browsers mentioned below, and the same thing happened):
Internet explorer managed the at-sign svg file fine - it came as produced - golden.
Safari flattened the image, the gold was gone, and the orange fill and brown stroke I started out with, was what I got.
Firefox skipped the fill altogether, and showed only the stroke.
It would have been great if it worked though. Then everyone could be able to have the file as a vector file and upscale / downscale
as they wanted. But with the bad result I got from the browsers, I guess I better stick to png.
Do you know if there is a special svg file format that do work nowadays?
If so, what is the name of the extension?

Uploading Audio

Hi there, I simply had a question in regards to uploading audio files. I read through WP: Audio and still have not fully grasped on the process. From what I've understood, the file needs to be in a ogg. format. When uploading an audio file is this done through Wikimedia Commons? As in the same method as uploading images or is there a slight difference. Thanks in advance Rain Forest (talk) 06:03, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

@Rain Forest: Hello, if I am correct, are you from English Wikipedia? Yes, please refer to COM:Audio Help:CV on how to convert videos to accepted formats such as .ogg and .flac. You may then upload the audio file by Special:UploadWizard then. Make sure your audio file is entirely your own work, or it should be properly licensed for each of its component(s), regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 13:01, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: Hi that's right I'm from the English Wikipedia, thank you for your help earlier it was greatly helpful, I just had one more question if you don't mind answering. I wish to upload an audio excerpt from a copyrighted song just like File:Michael Jackson Thriller.ogg (the page appears through wikipedia not commons). While uploading, what is the proper copyright tag that needs to be added so it doesn't get removed? Also is there a specific limitation as to how long an excerpt has to be. Thanks again in advance. Rain Forest (talk) 07:36, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
@Rain Forest: hello, please do not upload these audio files, as they are fair use files, which is not accepted by Commons. Any such files uploaded will be deleted on sight. As for restriction on length, I think there is no limit on length, as long as you can upload the audio file properly, regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 07:54, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: Is that so I see, I'm confused because I've seen multiple articles on Wikipedia using audio excerpts from artist's songs that have not been deleted (eg. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson#Themes_and_genres and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC/DC#Beginnings_(1974–1975)) so I'm wondering how they were able to upload it without having it taken down. But thank you for your advice. Rain Forest (talk) 08:53, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
@Rain Forest: Per COM:FU, Commons does not accept fair use files. However, English Wikipedia do accept them. Please refer to w:WP:FU and w:WP:NFCC for further information, and upload those fair use media files to English Wikipedia, instead of Commons, regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 08:55, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi there,

I am a representative of a company looking to upload said company's logo. I am seeking advice to make sure I do it through the proper channels. Any information into this matter would be helpful.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexblough (talk • contribs) 12 October 2019‎ 02:38 (UTC)

  • @Alexblough: If the logo is so simple that it is ineligible for copyright, just upload with {{PD-ineligible}} in place of a license.
  • Otherwise, Commons can host the logo only if you are willing to grant a sufficiently free license, one that allows anyone to use it (including in a commercial context) and allows derivative works. In general, you would want to retain trademark, and mark the file page with {{Trademarked}}. There are two ways you can demonstrate that the license is valid:
    • You can indicate the license on the company's own website, and link that in the permissions area of the {{Information}} template on the relevant file page. If you can do this, this is usually easiest.
    • Alternatively -- more cumbersome, but always possible -- you can go through the process outlined in COM:OTRS and COM:CONSENT. - Jmabel ! talk 04:45, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

Signed Photo Release for a picture to be used on Wikipedia

I have explicit signed permission to use a photograph for a Wiki page I'm creating for a client. I am the agent tasked with creating his Wiki page, for the company (JDWeb Solutions) handling his public profile. May I use the picture since I have the signed photo release with contact information for verification? It is his picture that he took of himself, so he is the sole owner of the picture. Please advise. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrjasonwilson (talk • contribs) 12 October 2019‎ 03:26 (UTC)

  • @Mrjasonwilson: If you are asking only about Wikipedia, you'll need to take up your question on Wikipedia; this is Wikimedia Commons.
  • If you want to upload the picture on Commons, we need a specific license, and we need it to be granted by the owner of the copyright, which in this case would be the same person as the subject of the picture. There are two ways you can demonstrate that the license is valid:
    • The subject/owner can indicate the license on their own website or on a page (e.g. on Flickr) that is clearly under their control, and you can link that in the permissions area of the {{Information}} template on the relevant file page. If you can do this, this is usually easiest.
    • Alternatively -- more cumbersome, but always possible -- the subject/owner can go through the process outlined in COM:OTRS and COM:CONSENT. You cannot do this on their behalf because you are not the person granting the license.
  • I recommend the {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}} license: it conforms with Commons' needs, but retains the right of attribution. - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
  • By the way, if you are creating a page on the English language Wikipedia for a client, about that client, I hope you are conforming to en:WP:COI. - Jmabel ! talk 04:54, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

Wikimedia based scholarly reviewed journal, free to access, perfect forum for scholarly information

A thought occurred to me on my way to work the other day. Most scholarly journals are simply a group of people running a server and collaborating review of scholarly articles to either accept or reject articles. Most people reviewing articles (the difficult part), are non-paid faculty and students from universities.

Why doesn't Wikipedia put together a system to create a free to access peer review journal. I published an article with AIAA Journal of Thermophysics, and my only regret was that my article wouldn't be freely accessible to everyone. There are many scholarly journals out there that require a fee to access the journal.

If Wikipedia can provide a free scholarly journal, and can pay a few staff members to collaborate review of said journals with university volunteers, Wikimedia Foundation could become seriously useful and helpful to university students around the world. If a fee were required for access (just enough to cover overhead), it could certainly be very affordable compared to current scholarly journals.

In order to decrease workload for review collaborators, you could post articles pending review online, and experts in those fields could review them, and submit their review, and after enough experts with verified credentials reviewed and article, it would become officially published.

In order to compete with Wikimedia's scholarly journal, conventional pay for subscription journals would have to decrease the cost of subscriptions to become free too. I think there is serious potential to really shake up an industry that is limiting people's access to important information. Specifically, information needed for policy making decisions, for research, for innovating business and technology, and basically limiting access to people who are willing to pay large sums of money to gain access to important information in their fields. People like Aaron Schwartz fought for better access to information related to fields of science, in order to improve the world around us, encouraging us to redefine the norms of a limited, elitist social contract. He wanted to help find cures for diseases by writing an advanced algorithm to download and organize academic articles, making it easier to access information on specific topics. He was arrested over a legal technicality, although he had, to the best of my knowledge, not committed an ethical or moral violation, and certainly hadn't deliberately harmed anyone, except for corporate interests. I think Wikimedia Foundation has the potential to bring his dream back to life.

List of possible names: -Wikademic Journal -Wikibrary -Wikademia -Wikijournal -Wikimedia research journal -Wikimedia research articles

Let me post the photo because I want to help people understand what it means to explain.

I wanted to publish an image, and I know that image was not me that I took it, it is not mine but if I do not put it mine you will not let me continue, and then, when I continue, I put the title, the description, the category and date you say there is illegal information or abusive information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by R13.p06 (talk • contribs) 11:23, 12 October 2019 (UTC) (UTC)

  • @R13.p06: Actually, you did not seemed to make any edits apart from asking at here, so I am not sure why you said that you are not allowed to edit or upload.
    • To upload an image that is taken by others, please upload the image, properly cite that the image is from others, attribute the photographer, and ask if the photographer wish to publish the image under what license. You may find a list of accepted licenses at COM:CC.
    • After that, please add {{subst:OP}} in your image description page, so that others will not delete your image accidentally.
    • Please then inform the photographer to send a permission statement to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (or a language specific address) according to the permission statement template of COM:CONSENT.
    • An OTRS volunteer should find that email, deal with it properly, and it is done!
  • Just to mention that, the photographer may also create a private account at Special:CreateAccount, and if it is done, no permission statements are needed.
  • Please feel free to ask me if you have further questions, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 14:03, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

I can't fix my own files?

I am trying to fix the speed and brightness/contrast of this file and this file, but when I head over to the place where the link to upload a new version of a file is supposed to be, I see "You cannot overwrite this file." What can/should I do to be able to upload a new version of each of the files?  ⠀—‌‌  Glosome‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌  💬 04:01, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Neither the file is currently protected nor you are blocked from editing. You should be able to see a "Upload a new version" hyperlink below the file history. I noticed that you posted this request while being logged out. You just need to log in. Masum Reza📞 04:06, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
I still can't upload. I get taken to a web-page where a "Try the upload wizard instead" button appears for a fraction of a second.  ⠀—‌‌  Glosome‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌  💬 06:35, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
@Glosome: Yes, the "Try the upload wizard instead" button gets hidden after the JS loads. Just don't click on anything else on that page, scroll down and you should see an upload form. Masum Reza📞 07:35, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

How can I filter or sort image search results by resolution and licence type?

Is this possible? Thank you for your help! Sparticusmaximus (talk) 23:30, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

@Sparticusmaximus: For resolution, you can use filewidth:, fileheight:, and/or fileres:. For instance, to search for images at least 1000 pixels wide, add filewidth:>1000 to your search string. Similarly, if you want to look for images of at least six megapixels, you'd use fileres:>2449 (2449 is the square root of 6,000,000). To search for a particular licence, you can use incategory: with the name of the category for that licence. So for CC BY-SA 2.0, you might use incategory:CC-BY-SA-2.0. Putting this together, I can search for pictures mentioning "tower" of at least 6 Mpx and licenced CC BY-SA 2.0: tower incategory:CC-BY-SA-2.0 fileres:>2449. For more information, see mw:Help:CirrusSearch. --bjh21 (talk) 12:02, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the helpful reply @Bjh21: , that is exactly what I needed to know! As a follow up question, is there a list I can access of the different licence types? Also, is there a way to search licences generally (e.g. all CC type licences). Thank you! Sparticusmaximus (talk) 01:02, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

@Sparticusmaximus: Many copyright tags are listed on the pages linked from Commons:Copyright tags. Each tag's template page should show the category it adds files to. You might be able to use deepcat: to search across a whole category tree, but I think the tree under Category:Free Creative Commons licenses may be too large for that: when I tried repeating the above search with deepcat:"Free Creative Commons licenses" I only got one hit. --bjh21 (talk) 11:42, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Re downloading

Hi I want to download some images from Wikimedia When I click the download size I want all I get is a preview. If I save that then when I open it all I have is the Wikimedia preview. How can I simply download an image as a jpeg so I can use it as a book cover at a later date? I am using a MAC desktop. I don't have this problem using my laptop. Thanks

What does it mean Publish Changes? Show Preview etc?

I thought this page was for asking questions. I hope it reaches someone who can give me an answer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victorialbert (talk • contribs) 16:23, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Click on the image on its page and wait until it loads in the browser then right click on the image and choose "Save image as ...". Ruslik (talk) 19:21, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
"Publish changes" means to save the edit you made to the wiki. "Show Preview" means to look at how it will display, without yet saving it to the wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 22:30, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Image with unclear copyright

Hi! I recently uploaded an image of an Indian journalist, Tushar Kanti Ghosh. The image is a cropped scan of a physical image from his 1944 book published in British India, The Bengal Tragedy. I'm not sure about its copyright status or who created the image - the subject died in 1994, 15 years ago, and the book was published 75 years ago, though of course not in the United States as far as I can tell. I have a copy of the book, and couldn't find the image online anywhere which suggests it might be copyrighted.

Looking at the Commons:Hirtle chart, I'm starting to think it might be public domain under {{PD-1996}}, as it was published before 1978 most likely without compliance with US formalities. Is that right?

What is the appropriate thing to do here to make sure we can use this image? Thanks for the help! Ganesha811 (talk) 19:39, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Ganesha811: What is the basis to say this was in the public domain in India as of 1996? - Jmabel ! talk 22:39, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
    • @Jmabel: I don't know - do you know of any good resources for finding out about Indian copyright? The subject of the photo had died before 1996, but I don't know who the photographer was - the book does not say. Ganesha811 (talk) 23:12, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
      • @Ganesha811: According to https://selvams.com/blog/copyright-protection-photographers-india/, photographs in India are protected for 60 years from date of publication. That means a 1944 photo would still have been under copyright in India in 1996 (and in fact until 2004), so it would seem that case in the Hirtle chart doesn't apply. If you don't have some specific reason this image would be in the public domain in India as of 1996, then it seems to me that it is currently copyrighted in the U.S. and we can't host it under our rules. If the photographer is unknown, I'm afraid that means it's hopeless to find anyone who could grant rights.
      • Does anyone see this differently? - Jmabel ! talk 23:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
        • w:Copyright law of India claims that non-retroactivity means that photos prior to 1958 only got 50 years. I recall India moved from life+50 to life+60 (and probably 50 to 60 on photos) at some point, but IIRC it was to keep w:Rabindranath Tagore's works in copyright for another ten years, so the extension would have had to have been prior to 1991.
        • The best I can say is that Wikipedia says that the photo is out of copyright, and it doesn't sound implausible to me. Wish I could do better.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:01, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
          • I think it's also possible the photo was taken before 1944, possibly in the '30s - I don't have it myself, but my parents have a earlier book of his (অন্যায় বিচারকরা) which has what I'm pretty sure is the same photo in the front, published in 1936. The book I have, The Bengal Tragedy, just re-uses the same photo. But I haven't seen that one in a while, I'd have to call my parents and ask them to dig out out of the attic somewhere to be certain. Relating to adding a US licence

Hi. I have been advised by an admin on the English Wikipedia to add a US license in addition to the current license for the following images in the article "Indian Military Academy" -

Which US license would be suitable here? Thanks.DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 11:13, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @DiplomatTesterMan: Sadly, none unless you have a basis to say these are public domain in the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
  • @DiplomatTesterMan: I think the GODL on the third and fourth files applies worldwide, so there's no need for any US-specific template on those (but the second one would benefit from a working source link). I think Jmabel is right about the first two, though: they were in copyright in their source countries in 1996, so the URAA applies to them and they're still in copyright in the US (until 95 years after they were first published). --bjh21 (talk) 17:37, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: , @Bjh21: So does this mean that the images can stay in the article or will they have to go? (The article is currently a good article nomination, though not under review as yet.) Thanks. DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 06:25, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Frolik: Permission to use something for a Wikipedia article is not enough. We need a specific free license (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}).
  • In this case, since the picture was presumably published in a newspaper without any indication of a free license, almost certainly what we need is for the copyright-holder (in this case Dutli's wife) to go through the process at COM:CONSENT and COM:OTRS to let us know what license she is offering. - Jmabel ! talk 17:43, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Problems of my own making trying to upload a new file version.

Hello, I seem to have comprehensively tripped myself up, fallen in a hole and continued to dig! I wanted to upload a new version of File:Segas offices, Croydon; Grade II listed, in September 2019.jpg, which I did (I think). The current version and your upload from 20 October 16:07 are actually identical (as confirmed by the Commons revert tool). so there is no need to revert or delete anything. Just let the file sit as it is. De728631 (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, but I cannot see that they are, the current version (18:57 in my uploads) and the version at 16:07 differ in that the current version gives the building a slight lean forward and to the right (as viewed) and it was this perspective anomaly that I was trying to correct. The 16:07 image is what I would like to see as the 'current' version. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 21:36, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
The perspective-corrected version is current. There is probably a caching issue on your end. - Jmabel ! talk 23:09, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, yes, clearing etc. seems to have sorted it. There's no need to delete either of the duplications? Thanks again to both. Eagleash (talk) 03:30, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
With a few incredibly rare execeptions, nothing is ever actually deleted from the servers (admins can still see it). "Deleting" an intermediate version is really just hiding it from regular users. Generally we do that only if there are issues of copyright violations, libel, privacy violations, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Please unblock me for editing and publishing our own photos

Dear WIKIPEDIA Admin,

I am Tengku Zulhilmi from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. I would like to update Wikipedia page of our own university at this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universiti_Teknologi_Petronas

For your information, I am an officer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and you may check my name through Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS website at this link. https://www.utp.edu.my/directories/Pages/management.aspx

I noticed that some photos that I have uploaded recently have been removed due to copyright violation. Actually, all of the photos were taken from our official website. I also noticed that I cannot edit the page or adding new contents.

Appreciate if you could help me in the following: 1) Please unblock my account. So that I can continue to update my university page in Wikipedia. 2) Please allow me to publish the photos as they are taken by our own photographers.

Regards,

Tengku Zulhilmi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kumie7 (talk • contribs) 02:16, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

1) @Kumie7: I presume the files in question are:
2) This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons, and we can do nothing about en:Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
3) I see no indication that your account is or ever has been blocked on Wikimedia Commons. If you were blocked on en-wiki, you'll have to take that up there, but do read en:WP:COI first.
4) Just to take up two of the deleted files File:Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.png and File:Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh.png (I didn't look at the others), you claimed these both as your own work. From the above, you are now saying that is not true. I'm guessing that the situation is the same for the other files.
5a) If the files come from the university web site, and the web site indicates the {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} license that you indicate, then you can go through Commons:Undeletion requests, indicate the relevant sources that indicate the valid licenses, and these will be restored.
5b) If the files come from the university web site, and the web site does not indicate the {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} license that you indicate, then:
5b1) If you are in control of that web site, then you can fix that and then go through Commons:Undeletion requests.
5b2) If you not able to deal with that on the university web site, then you will need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS and COM:CONSENT
6) Point 5 largely applies as well to files that have not yet been deleted, except for no need to go throughCommons:Undeletion requests. - Jmabel ! talk 05:06, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

File:2018-X20 Gerhard-Hradetzky.jpg

Use of online photograph

See the picture on http://trockist.net/index.php/2019/02/16/ta-thu-thau-vietnamli-trockist-onder/

It is a studio portrait taken about 1926 of the Vietnamese revolutionary Ta Thu Thau. I want to include in his Wikipedia entry.

It surely cannot be under any kind of copyright.

Is it possible to use it?

Thank you ManfredHugh — Preceding unsigned comment added by ManfredHugh (talk • contribs) 11:48, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

@ManfredHugh: In general, I think the image is currently in public domain. Yet before you upload the image, Would you please provide who is the author and where is the image photographed? Many thanks.廣九直通車 (talk) 12:57, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
It could be under copyright. Let's say the photographer was a 20-year-old French citizen who first published it in France and who lived into the 1980s. They might have been alive 40 years ago, and their heirs might still own a copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Right, Maybe it's fine, maybe it is not. More information would be needed - for example is the photographer known? Was it previously published? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:02, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Are these images free from copyright?

So I found some photographs that are helpful in Wikipedia. I wonder if they are free from copyright because although the photographer is British, the photos were taken in Yemen. I think in Yemeni law these images are free from copyright but in British law I don't think they are free. Here is one of them [3].--SharabSalam (talk) 16:54, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Request: Subcategory change

Hello! Few months ago I imported the file File:Monet.Jardin de l'artiste à Argenteuil.1873.jpg . By mistake I inserted it into the categories: Category:Tableau de Claude Monet , because it was the first time I imported into commons.

Could someone transfer it to the appropriate category which is: Category:1870s paintings by Claude Monet ,please?

I don't know how to do because I do not yet master the possibilities of Commons. I am still in the Wiki learning phase.

Thanks in advance for your help.Contributeur2019 (talk) 14:35, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

    • @Jmabel: . Quite simple! Too simple! Next time it will be easier for me. Tks Jmabel.
    • Concerning the second point, you are right, there is a lot to be made regarding the categories about Monet's work. Unfortunately, on Commons it is often classified in all directions, especially with regard to painters (but not only). It is sometimes difficult to navigate between categories and subcategories. Maybe someday I will try to rearrange the categories of Monet's paintings. Tks again for your help.Contributeur2019 (talk) 10:15, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

I just got a Notice of Impending Speedy Deletion User:CarlOttersen is considered to fulfill the criteria for speedy deletion and has been marked on its page.

I have no idea what this is about. It comes from user GSS (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:GSS), whom I have no knowledge of either.

Since I have only posted a few, never contended, photos, and I updated in July the page of Berekum Arsenal FC of Ghana (they are my clients, I have their authority to do so), I am nonplussed.

  • If this was the same image that was at https://www.instagram.com/sluganarodu.kucher.179/, which is what someone said on your talk page, then: the Instagram posting is considered prior publication with no indication of a free license. If you have access to that page, then you can idicate the license there, and indicate that page as a source. Your writing directly to the page after deletion made a mess, though, so it's making it very hard to work out what happened to the original photo and to undelete. Would you be able to send email as described at OTRS, with the JPEG as an attachment? It might take then a few weeks to sort this out (the OTRS people are backlogged) but it will work. - Jmabel ! talk 02:39, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Normally, someone blocking you doesn't stop you from editing a page, and I'm not sure what you mean by "свою страницу" (my Russian is very weak, a few months in school 40 years ago, but this suggests to me a page that you somehow own, and other than User:Novel2080 I can't think what that would be). - 16:23, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
'Vandalism' means editing that is not intended to improve Wikipedia. It includes joke edits and incorrect information. See ru:Википедия:Вандализм for more info.
You need to ask for an unblock. This would be difficult: you need to prove that you really want to improve Wikipedia. Also you don't even have right to edit your User Talk page, so it will be twice as difficult.
Good news: the block works only in Russian Wikipedia, so you can edit other projects (for example, Wikipedia in English). But 'vandalism' is not acceptable everywhere on Wikipedia (and on Wikimedia Commons too). So you need to actually improve our encyclopedia. I don't understand why I can't edit. Why?

Eight days ago, Reke warned me to stop intervening with the editing work of WLM volunteers in Taiwan(see his talk page). However, editing the Wikimedia Commons is open to everyone so anyone should have the right to edit any page. I don't understand why I can't edit. Why?--Kai3952 (talk) 02:30, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

It's not a formal ban but a request by @Reke: . This seems to stem from Category:Disagreement Images of WLM 2019 in Taiwan. Rather than deleting the category and everyone discussing this in so many places, maybe a discussion belongs at Category talk:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in Taiwan? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:59, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
I know, but no one is discussing the Category:Disagreement Images of WLM 2019 in Taiwan at COM:CFD.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:47, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
I think it's so clear that the category is for WLM 2019 in Taiwan. In normally, nobody will edit it even anybody can, and it won't affect anyone except the organizer of the event. This picture is more than 100 years old. The person in the picture passed away in year 1906. He was a great historian serving maharaja of Udaipur. His two sons Kesri Singh Barhat and Jowar Singh Barhat were freedom fighters in India's independence movement.

This picture is the only picture available and was first published by his great grand daughter in a book called "Charan-Kul-Prakash". The picture is widely available in public domain. The person who took this picture is unknown. --ManojMisran (talk) 16:24, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello! I have a question about the file. It uses many copyleft photos. But the license is "public domain". PD means that anyone can use it for their own work and to mark the derivative file as (c) all rights reserved. Does this file have a correct license? ParticipantOfTheEncyclopedia (talk) 18:17, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

  • This is certainly wrong as it stands. While all of the underlying photos are free-licensed, they are not public domain, so a derivative from them cannot be public domain. The person who created this arrangement of four images is welcome to waive copyright on the arrangement, but cannot waive any rights on the underlying images, whose respective licenses should be stated. - Jmabel ! talk 19:18, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

SpaceX Starship Photos

Per {{Cc-zero-SpaceX}} I think all of the photos on SpaceX's Flickr is free to use on Wikipedia. Recently SpaceX posted a few photos like this. I was just wanting to confirm that the photo can be uploaded to Wikipedia from what I understand using Special:UploadWizard? (I usually edit on en-Wikipedia so I'm not to familiar with Commons) OkayKenji (talk) 19:56, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

But it looks like under each photo it says CC BY-NC 2.0, so only for non-commercial use, so are they still able to be used on Wikipedia? OkayKenji (talk) 20:03, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
They cannot be uploaded to Commons, but if there is a reasonable fair use rationale (e.g., an article specifically discussing the render), it could possibly be uploaded to that article. That's a question for that Wikipedia though, for Commons, unfortunately they cannot be uploaded (answered something similar over at English Wikipedia). Kees08 (talk) 21:27, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
@Kees08: then why are photos like File:CRS-18 Mission (48380511427).jpg on commons if per the flickr site it said CC BY-NC 2.0? For example as of 6 Feb 2019 of this year another photo was under public domain but now is CC BY-NC 2.0. OkayKenji (talk) 14:24, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
According to that page, the copyright-holder provided a license via OTRS. Do you have some reason to doubt that? - Jmabel ! talk 17:23, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
No, I'm just confused why photos having the same licence some are uploaded to Commons and the newer ones can not... OkayKenji (talk) 18:27, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
Specific permission (via OTRS) for a particular photo or photos does not imply a policy of free-licensing everything you've got. - Jmabel ! talk 01:58, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Hey DUBAI DASARA. It appears that you have become a little lost, unfortunately. First, you have made your way to Wikimedia Commons, which is a repository for free media for use by our sister projects and the general public, but which is separate from Wikipedia proper. Second, you have created a user page at User:DUBAI DASARA. A user page is normally a place to tell the community a little bit about yourself, and/or include some helpful or relevant links, and not a place to publish encyclopedic content.
If you would like to transfer your content to the English Wikipedia, you can create it by clicking here -> en:Draft:Dubai Dasara, and creating the new article at that location instead. If you insert {{AFC submission}} at the top of the page, it will be submitted for review by an experienced volunteer prior to publishing, and they can offer feedback on any issues that might need addressed in order to make it ready for full release. I have a wikipedia page in my name - Susanne Mayer - and somebody uploaded an awful picture on it. I cannot remove it or replace it with my own picture. Why?

You should find a better image, make the photographer release it under a free licence and upload it to Commons. After that you will be able to change the image used in the article. Ruslik (talk) 19:43, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
Though rather than just "make the photographer release it under a free licence," I'd just say "get the photographer to release it under a free licence." - Jmabel ! talk 01:59, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

PNG preview and SVG source mismatch

I just uploaded File:American Koverage 47.svg and the PNG version automatically created of the SVG is not complete. If you click on the SVG, it renders in browsers fine. (Even appeared to in the upload tool.)

Is there a way to manually set a correctly-rendered PNG version? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gwenhope (talk • contribs) 03:11, 30 August 2019‎ (UTC)

  • This is rendering fine, though it is not obvious to me that it is in Commons' scope. - Jmabel ! talk 02:01, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
  • Gwenhope: I see the issue. Both the blue and red magnifying glasses are not shown at all in the png. The solution is to change the rim of both magnifying glasses so there are three circles without any filling. The rim should just be an outline circle on either end and then an another outline circle in the middle which will take care of the gap in the middle. I did test that, and it will fix the problem. If you don't think you are up for it, then post it at Commons:Graphic_Lab/Illustration_workshop. And to answer your question, no you can't change the PNG.--Snaevar (talk) 11:42, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:RaymarineLogo.png

This is the Raymarine logo lifted from their web site www.raymarine.com. I have used it in the Wikipedia article describing the company en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymarine_Marine_Electronics. What must I do to satisfy the copyright issues with this file?

@Tallcuss: Please inform the company to send a permission statement to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org in accordance to the template of COM:CONSENT. Alternatively, if you cannot do so, you can upload the logo to English Wikipedia as a fair use file. having trouble uploading photos despite having copyright holder permission

Hello,

I'm having trouble changing adding to the commons photos of myself that are published by the copyright holder expressly for this purpose (for download without additional permissions) here:

https://www.macfound.org/media/photos/Daugaard_2019_hi-res-download_4.jpg

and here:

https://www.macfound.org/media/photos/Daugaard_2019_hi-res-download_3.jpg

What am I doing wrong? I don't necessarily want to download them to my computer and then upload them, though I did just try to do that. The image has been flagged for rapid deletion. This shouldn't be so hard ... I am using an image being placed in the public domain by the copyright holder which is immediately verifiable on their webpage.

Separately, I'm trying to use this photo which the copyright holder is emailing permission for use using the commons template to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Please don't delete it!

Golden Hind

Hope you have time for a crazy question. I am an 81 year old recently retired dentist. The hands still work. When I was 16 years old I built a wooden model of the Golden Hind sold by the Ideal Toy Company. It was a work of art. Shortly after completion we had to move to a new home and the model was not welcome. Either discard it or else. I chose else. I donated it to the public library in my area. After several years I tried to reclaim it but it was gone. I recently got the urge to reclaim my youth but have been unsuccessful in finding any info about the Ideal Toy Company or a present company that sells this kind of wooden kits. No luck on Ebay. I hope you can help. Upload of Picture Article "Auslandsdienst Österreichs"

Hi, for some reason I cannot upload an image of the NGO "Austrian Service Abroad". There aren´t that many suitable pictures that would fit into the main page of an Wiki Article. The ones I´d consider as acceptable - and so does the club as well - have already been published. But that´s it, there are no more options than the Logo and a picture in front of the president.

Username Change on Photographs

Hey there! A few days back I changed my username to my actual name. That being said, since I've been covering political movements here in Beirut, Lebanon, my privacy might be at a serious stake. I wanted to know if there was anything I could do with the uploader license name, as in, can I change the name to a non-existing username on an uploaded Commons photograph? --Shahen Araboghlian (talk) 10:52, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

  • There is no such thing as an "uploader license name" so you'll need to be more specific about what you want to change. For whatever it's worth: the uploader as such is simply your account, and the only way to change that is to change your account name, but anything else can be changed. In the future, if you don't want your name associated with something, you should certainly not use an account with your real name. There is no rule against having more than one account, as long as you don't use that in a deceptive manner (agreeing with yourself in discussions, voting twice, evading blocks, etc.)- Jmabel ! talk 16:08, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
    • Hey there! Thanks for your response. My question was actually on the fact that I only want to know if it's possible to change the name displayed in the photo credits of the photos that I uploaded. Meaning, I want to change how I'm credited if someone were to use that photo of mine. Additionally, my username was newly changed and I'm not able to change it again until April 2020. I have so many photographs I've taken at a revolution dispatch I'm at and want to upload them all on Commons for free use, but I don't want political organizations to use my full name when crediting me. --Shahen Araboghlian (talk) 11:22, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
      • Hey Shahen Araboghlian. Well it is surely possible to use a pen name or pseudonym in the author section of the file description. Unfortunately for this, the software will automatically assign the upload to whatever account actually carries out the action, and this cannot be changed as far as I am aware.
Alternative one is to create a second pseudonymous account account for privacy reasons. You can disclose the link between the two accounts on the respective user pages. If you are using a license that requires attribution, like CCBYSA 4.0, you can normally specify how that attribution should be properly made, and so you can stipulate that reusers should credit the pseudonymous account, rather than your real name. Many times, reusers will not credit individual users at all, but merely credit Wikimedia Commons (or incorrectly but normally "meh, good enough", credit Wikipedia).
Alternative two would be to use a license that does not require attribution at all, like CC0. Of course, this doesn't actually prevent reusers from crediting the media out of an abundance of caution, but merely removes the requirement that they do so in order to comply with the license. So you could certainly combine options one and two, so that reusers are not required to provide attribution, and if they do, they should credit your pseudonym rather than your real name.
For legitimate use of alternative accounts, it is generally required by policy and practice that they be publicly linked, at least for those of us who are savvy at navigating Commons. So again, if a reuser happens to be particularly savvy, it would still be possible for them to draw the connection. But in practice, the vast majority of reusers will not be familiar enough to do so, and those that are, will probably be familiar enough to comply with your request to remain pseudonymous. Probably the more likely scenario is that people will simply be looking online for you for whatever reason, find that (at least for me) your Wikipedia user page is the third result on Google, and connect your user name to your uploads, rather than the other way around. For more information on how to address this, see the English guide at en:Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing. GMGtalk 11:52, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Template: coding

Hi, I'm trying to update some of the War Memorial categories. Placing files into appropriate categories and creating new categories as required. Where possible identifying each category with it's Wikidata info box, Listed buildings England number and its War Memorial Reference number from the Imperial War Museum. See here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:War_memorial_(Appledore)

I've generated my own line of text for the War Memorial Reference number This is a category about War Memorial, WMR reference number 25598.

BUT because there are so many categories to edit can someone help write a Template to inset this information? Similar to the Listed buildings England one.

    • I think I understand it. What image do you mean? You can download it by saving it in the size you have choosen. If you want to use it on your site or blog, it depends what copyrights it are. If it's CC BY SA / GFDL, you have to use that license and mention the original author, no matter if the size is different. If you modified it or reduced it, doesn't matter with the mentioned license I wrote. If the copyrights are different, or if you mean something else, please ask again in english or in your main language as Jmabel says. - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 00:10, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Missing text on svg map in all png versions

I recently uploaded File:Lake District Geology Map.svg. If you view the original svg file, you will see the text "Westmorland Monocline" in the lower central part of the map, but in all the png versions of the image, that text is missing. All other text seems to be fine. Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix it? Mikenorton (talk) 10:51, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

The text that disappeared was the only text that had been put on a curved path. I've worked around this issue by splitting the text in two to roughly follow the curve - not ideal but it was successful. The only remaining question is why text on a path should be treated differently. Mikenorton (talk) 10:30, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Ah yes, my bad. File:MUTCD R1-1.svg was moved to File:Stop sign dark red.svg as criterion 4 (harmonizing) when the file is already harmonised with files in User:Fry1989/Gallery/Road Signs/United States. (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 16:45, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
Probably a poor choice, but since the redirect will still work, probably not a big deal. Or am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk
@Jmabel: The file is part of the US road sign series, and in the cat Category:PD MUTCD. The files are the works of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and R1-1, in this case, is the sign number. I don't see why a file with an "official" US road sign should be renamed to follow a "unofficial version" with a reason of harmonization when the file is already harmonized. (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 03:18, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
As I said, the redirect was a poor choice. If someone had asked me, I would have told them not to do that. But if the old filename is part of a pattern, it should still work, so no real harm is done. - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Please wait a little. Category:Railroad engineers seems to include some people who were railroad designers rather than train operators. I think this should be a Cfd for interested parties to comment on, e.g. @Andy Dingley: . Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:27, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

  • "Railroad engineer" could be interpreted two ways: Brunel or Casey Jones? Casey Jones is likely what's intended, but it only makes sense in a narrow linguistic context: "railroad" (mostly a US term) and "engineer" (as driver, rather than designer), a very heavily US term. "Locomotive driver" is far clearer: even from a purely linguistic sense with no context knowledge at all, a "locomotive driver" is someone who drives a locomotive. Such a term is portable worldwide, and that's a valuable advantage for Commons.
The Casey Jones interpretation is also supported by the wikidata content which fills the infobox; unsourced Wikidata content controls the canonical definition of terms here because no-one outside the WD clique knows the impenetrable P- & Q- numbers to change it.
Merge to locomotive drivers. CfD if needed. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:57, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Wes Clark and Jerry Cox.png

I have 4 photos that I've recently uploaded. They are dated 1966, 1967 and two from 2007. I'm unsure who the photographers were but were provided by Jerome Cox, the subject of my article. The two from the 60's were taken by a staff photographer from the computer laboratory Dr. Cox managed and the two from 2007 were taken at a museum where he and his team had donated one of their pioneering computers. Can I use these photos and how do I attribute them so that they won't vanish from my article? Thank you

--Nbattersby2001 (talk) 19:19, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Nbattersby2001: This is going to be a bit complicated, but here goes.
  • Everything on Commons has to have either a sufficiently free license or a stated reason why it is in the public domain (provided, in either case, by a template, sometimes supplemented by a written-out rationale.) You haven't indicated any license or any reason to think the image is in the public domain.
  • The linked source of File:Wes Clark and Jerry Cox.png does not seem to display the image, let along give a license for it.
  • It is very rare that the subject of a photo owns the copyright to it, so that's probably irrelevant.
  • If either of the 1966/1967 images were published without copyright notice in the United States before 28 February 1989, it would be public domain (there are some side-issues about registering within five years if published after 1978, but those are very unlikely here). If you have evidence that is the case -- for example if these came from an uncopyrighted 1967 publication -- then for those you could use {{PD-US-no notice}} if published before 1978 or {{PD-US-1978-89}} if in 1978 or later. Since 28 February 1989, U.S. works have been "copyrighted at creation" under the Berne Convention.
    • If they weren't so published, then they are copyrighted until 70 years after the death of the photographer.
  • For the more recent images, if you want them on Commons, by far the most efficacious way would be if you could get the photographer's to grant a license (the same could be done with the older images, by either the photographer or the heir to their intellectual property). Let me know if you'd be able to get hold of the photographer and if so, I'll flesh out the details of how they can grant that license.
  • When you say "my article": is this on the English-language Wikipedia? If so, you might look into whether you can upload it directly to the English-language Wikipedia (not to Commons) under the English-language Wikipedia's allowances for non-free use. - Jmabel ! talk 21:02, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

I have created my article and it's still in my "sandbox" although I have hit the Publish button. I don't think it's live yet. I'm so new to this I don't really understand the process from this point. As to the rights to the photographs - I have no way of finding the photographer of the photos from the 60s. Most of the people from that pioneering computer laboratory are dead or very elderly and have no memory of who the photographer might have been. Staff photographer from their team is about all I've got. I received those two photographs in an email from one of the people involved in the computer lab some years back. The one of Wes and Jerry hangs on the wall in his house. As to the ones from 2007, those are on the Digibarn's website. Any further advice for me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nbattersby2001 (talk • contribs) 21:23, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

License for pictures on permanent public display

Hi! I have photos taken by me of pictures on permanent public display, unknown author. What specific license applies? Iñaki LL (talk) 22:08, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

  • @Iñaki LL: Depends on the country. In some countries, if the picture is copyrighted, this is not allowed. Others offer what we call "Freedom of panorama for two-dimensional artwork" (some only if it's outdoors, I might add), in which case the situation is very similar to if the underlying work were public domain (crediting the author becomes a matter of courtesy, rather than law). Which country was this? - Jmabel ! talk 22:52, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: It would be in the Basque Country of Spain, something like this, posted on walls, but newer. In Spain, there is freedom of panorama. So what tag/template would that be? Iñaki LL (talk) 23:03, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Actually you should add two licences. First you need a free licence of your choice for your photograph, e.g. {{Cc-by-4.0}}, and then there is {{FoP-Spain}} for the publicly displayed images. You can even combine those two using the {{Licensed-PD}} template. De728631 (talk) 23:12, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
That is helpful, thanks De728631, and Jmabel! Iñaki LL (talk) 16:15, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

To haters with love – more mess with my userpage and images!

I have written about this problem before, but now more mess have been done to my user page and also done with my images, so my motivation for Wiki Media Commons is at the moment at a point of zero.

I have made a user page to present some of my images. I am quite conscious about what I am doing when it comes to design, so I made a little effort to make it look how I wanted. After having finished it, I have three different galleries with the images, and tables for the buttons below at the bottom. I was satisfied with the result, it looked like I had planned (close to anyway).

But then some days afterward, the gallery didn't stop with my images, but the images on the user boxes came too. And the first of those images is the Norwegian flag – telling that this user comes from Norway. The second symbol – the letters no - tells that my native language is Norwegian, those two letters – no – was also shown. I didn't have time to do anything about it then, but some days later, when I logged on to look into it, it was changed, so the gallery end tag seemed to work again. And it has been like that on my computer screen ever after. But then I looked at my user page on smart phone. And there it was the same mess, gallery didn't stop with my images, the Norwegian flag came next, end then came the no letters – and it stopped there. I have two more user boxes, but their symbols didn't show up.
Are Norwegians hated on Wiki Media Commons since this needed to be so very much exposed? What else could the motivation for anyone to do this be? I have no deleted the user box which tells that this user comes from Norway. But that really doesn't help much if I am getting a buffered page on my computer screen, just making it an illusion that everything is fine.

Another thing that has happened, is that I put the help desk on my watch list to get emails when new help request was added – to learn when others received good help. It worked fine in the beginning, but now it works randomly and rare, and I seldom get mail showing new requests here.

Another thing that has happened, is that two of my images have been messed with and made really pix-elated. These are the two: The first is one of my uploads for Wiki Loves Monuments Norway 2019. The first couple of days, it was shown on the list of the uploads on the first page of the five hundred images. Then it was moved to the second - the first thousand images uploaded, about the middle of that page together with images that aren't in the contest this year. But there are also other images for this years contest placed there, and obviously all uploads cannot be on the first page.
BUT – the image has been messed with. The image is absolutely crisp, sharp and clear as I uploaded it, and shows up like that on my computer screen. But when I looked at it on a smart phone, it was absolutely pix-elated, and therefor of really poor quality. How come? And that wasn't the only image that had been degraded like that. The vector symbol I made – the star symbol to show appreciation to good helpers, had been messed with the same way and was equally pix-elated. Vectors aren't pixel based, and cannot be pix-elated before transferred to bitmap format. And I had just been through a process of making the mistake of making a vector symbol to small, so it got pix-elated when other users used it bigger sized. (The “at” symbol mentioned here on the help desk earlier.) That didn't happen because I didn't know that bit maps get pix-elated when enlarged. It happened only because I quickly made that “at” symbol in the size I needed (as a mail symbol sign), so I made it tiny. I am a newbe here, and didn't know how things work. When I saw another user having used the image larger sized and therefor it got pix-elated, I made the image in different sizes and uploaded them. I got immediate feedback, the response told me that all the smaller versions would be deleted, and the biggest kept with a pointer to it for whoever had used the smaller ones. The smaller images was deleted, but no pointer was made to the largest. Anyway I realized afterwords that we need to think community in everything we do here on Wiki Media. So I would never have made that same fault just a couple of days after. Why was that image was messed with? It's obviously not the greatest work of art I have made – or anyone has uploaded to Wiki Media. It wasn't meant to be either. It was just meant to be an encouraging, uplifting sign as feedback to good helpers. To me stars are bright and shining, and the stars already in the system for giving feedback, are dark, that's why I made it. Was it to bright for whoever messed with it?
So my user page has been messed with and two of my images (at least two to my knowledge) has been messed with. But on the history of my user page, everything looks fine. Nothing else than edits I have made and the emptying of my userpage from another user, is recorded there. This give a false belief that everything is fine. Obviously either hackers or someone with system rights must have done these things.
In my search for help on Wiki Media when I made my page, I found a technical manual for programming Wiki Media pages. One chapter was named “How to hack any Wiki page”. Is hacking encouraged from the system?

Another thing that I find odd, is that one of the images I uploaded for Wiki Loves Monuments Norway 2019, was placed straight beneath another image – both with certain motives that could lead the thought in special direction – my image with an oval like frame, and than the other image with a pillar that looks like an enormous phallus symbol. I guess one shouldn't have much fantasy to see the sexual symbolism here. Later on a couple of other images have been placed in between, so the impression is no longer strong. I can assure everyone that I have never had any kind of sexual thoughts about my image until I saw the other image placed straight on top of my image.
The image with the phallus symbol has a text talking about the vikings and there downfall.

Are there any connection between that placement, the downfall of the vikings, the bullying with the Norwegian flag being placed into my gallery pages – and also the letters no misplaced in my gallery? I am not a nationalist, have never been and will never become one either. Quite the contrary – one of the things that I really found attractive when I first joined Wiki was the uniting of people from all over the world, the friendly way of sharing, common interest etc. And then someone with other motives is messing around with my work in several different ways, so it seems like I cannot do anything here on Wiki Media without it being messed with.

Do people hate Norwegians here on Wiki Media? Why the mess with the Norwegian flag and the no letters – and the placement of the images mentioned above? Obviously the placement of those two images in the beginning could be coincidental – but whit all the other experiences here, I doubt it.
Do people hate women here on Wiki Media Commons? Would it have made a difference if I had used the username 999Nic999, instead of 999Vic999? Are women in general and Norwegian women in special someone that should be “eliminated” (down with the vikings!), abused etc? It is abuse to mess with other peoples work! And then at last but not at least – are the hate organized from the inside of Wiki Media – or is this something hackers from the outside is capable of doing – or may be people with rights from the inside without it being organized?

Generally speaking – the hate are organized globally in our world and I have had my share of it without any other reason then that I engaged on high level as a voluntary worker in the freedom movement for eastern Europe around 1990. I was then strongly, positively exposed in media for my engagement. The hate has been enormous ever after, life has at times been nightmarish, but having built strength, things gradually improves. But sorry to say it still obviously works like new arenas provoke new hate – and activate new haters (or old on new arenas).

The most important lesson I have learned in the process is this: “The more hate – the more love is needed!”. So I now spread love in every direction here on Wiki Media – not at least to the haters having done the mess!

Dear 999Vic999. I am an fellow viking, although not from Norway. I am sorry that you have felt like you where being hated, but those are mainly technical issues.

1. It is easier to use the gallery tag for a number of images. You put the <gallery> tag at the start and </gallery> at the end of the list of images and the names of the images (with the "File:" prefix) inbetween, each on its own line. That will work better.

Isn't that what I have done? I have three galleries with images, and then tables for the user boxes. Anyway I saw I had used File: for the tiny "at" symbol after the last gallery end tag. It works fine on my computer screen, but maybe that's the problem on the mobile? I have now changed file: to image: It didn't make any difference on my computer screen, but maybe on the mobile? (I haven't looked yet.)

2. That you are no longer getting emails from the Help desk could be an change in default settings. Check whether the option "Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed" is checked at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal. If it is, then the lack of emails is an bug.

I looked at my watch list, and all the pages that were there that aren't my personal pages, are gone. I haven't made any changes.

3. Wiki Loves Monuments is a really popular event, so images will move around in the list as new ones are added. It is not intended as an criticism at you at all.

I have looked at the images at this page - https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&limit=500&offset=0&profile=default&search=wiki+loves+monuments+norway+2019&advancedSearch-current={}&ns0=1&ns6=1&ns12=1&ns14=1&ns100=1&ns106=1 - and there they haven't moved around.

4. Are you using an Apple Retina display on your smartphone ? That could explain the pixelated images, you are seeing.

No, android. And all the images weren't pixelated, only two. Anyway the photo of the two images is among the winner images, so I guess it must be ok in the system, so that's fine. How come it was so pixelated on my phone? If there should be anything like buffered pages, that might be the explanation.

5. It would be wierd if an newbie knew everything about images. The server is capable of scaling any image down as needed, so we only need the biggest size you got.

I learned about the systems scaling possibilities after the "at" symbol uploads :-)

6. I am not finding the "How to hack any Wiki page" chapter. Could you link to it (with the button)?

I didn't save the link, cannot find that manual again.

7. I do not find the image with the phallus symbol and the text about vikings and their downfall. Could you link to it ? It may just be vandalism that got reverted.

I looked for the image on this link where all the participating images from Norway should be, but it's not there: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019_in_Norway&filefrom=Nyg%C3%A5rdsh%C3%B8yden+i+Bergen+-+Realfagbygget+ved+Nyg%C3%A5rdsparkens+%C3%B8vre+del.jpg%0ANyg%C3%A5rdsh%C3%B8yden+i+Bergen+-+Realfagbygget+ved+Nyg%C3%A5rdsparkens+%C3%B8vre+del.jpg#mw-category-media
But I found the image on the link I have used to watch the images. Here is the link to the page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&limit=500&offset=0&profile=default&search=wiki+loves+monuments+norway+2019&advancedSearch-current={}&ns0=1&ns6=1&ns12=1&ns14=1&ns100=1&ns106=1
And here is the link to the image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%27The_Pencil%27_-_Battle_of_Largs_Monument.jpg
Here is the link to my image that was placed straight beneath it at first: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Idyll_fra_gamleBergen.jpg
The symbolism should be rather clear!

  1. Yes, you did. I was looking at your erliest edits on your userpage and thus did not realize that. In that case I do not see how to improve it, really. I personally think it looks very good.
  2. Ok, that is a bug then. Our programmers will probably have additional questions at phab:T237345, which I filed for you.
  3. No comment.
  4. Yes, we do buffer pages a lot, although we call it catching, but it is the same thing.
  5. No comment.
  6. Well, the "How to hack any Wiki page" title does not sound like something you should do.
  7. The last sentance on the tower image was a bit problematic, so I fixed it, but the rest is historically accurate. The thing is, that it is a good thing that modern day vikings do not behave exactly like their ancestors. Robbing and plundering would not be that welcoming.--Snaevar (talk) 01:19, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
