I have an article under review on the English Wikipedia here1, where the reviewer has asked questions regarding licences. I'm afraid that I don't understand what's being asked of me and wondered if anyone here can help. The questions are regarding File:Forcing a Passage of the Hudson.jpg and File:Sullivans-island-1050x777.jpg and can be found at the very bottom of the review page. Thanks in advance --Ykraps (talk) 05:20, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

After further clarification from the reviewer, I think this has been done.2 Thanks--Ykraps (talk) 06:44, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

My icon i just created in photoshop is apparently hrefs to unsafe data?

So I made this icon in photoshop for a top-icon, its an adaption of public domain locks on the commons. I tried uploading in through the file wizard but... Which deletion template ?

Hi there,
I came across an Image which is downloaded from Facebook(SEE EXIF), but the uploader claimed it own work. I think it's ducky as the Image is only (216 × 271 pixels, file size: 67 KB). What deletion template should I use in this case ? File:Ramesh kumar verma.jpg -- 🇪A〒ℂ🇭A  💬 14:58, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Photos of Billboards, Posters, etc.

How should I attribute copyright and author/owner information on photographs of old billboards such as this one:

I photographed the billboard but I am clearly NOT the author of the art on the billboard. Thanks for your help. Nicolas G. Mertens (talk) 11:08, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Nicolas G. Mertens: As far as I can tell, the author (Louis Borgex) died in 1959, meaning that his works are protected by copyright throughout 2029 according to French copyright law. You cannot publish a photo of a copyrighted work under a free license without permission from the copyright holder. In this case, that's most likely the author's heirs. updating a page

I have updated a page with some current activity of the person featured on the profile. I also changed to an updated image that they have approved. Should the update change immediately after I publish changes or is there a delay or a consent process, and if so how long will this take? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamie Blowers (talk • contribs) 13:44, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Hey Jamie Blowers. The changes you made on the English Wikipedia were reverted by another editor, because they were overtly promotional and unsourced. If you have an outside connection with the subject, you need to carefully review Wikipedia's guidance on managing conflicts of interest. Please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a vehicle for advertisement or promotion. You also need to provide verification in accordance with instructions at COM:CONSENT regarding the photo you uploaded, including an explanation for how it is your own work, when it includes no original meta data, and with several preexisting versions available online. GMGtalk 14:56, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

May I act as agent for a copyright holder?

I work with Keir Morse, a prolific plant photographer and botany PhD candidate.

Keir's photo collection is CC BY NC SA. Keir has given me permission to take photos from his collection and add arrows and annotations to them in preparation for upload to Wikipedia. He's agreed that I can submit these photos as CC BY SA, as required by Wikimedia. I'll use the resulting Wikimedia commons material to add value to Wikipedia articles about plants.

Keir doesn't have time to explicitly approve each of his images after I add my annotations. Can I submit an agreement between Keir and me that will satisfy your licensing requirements?

Thanks,

Bruce Homer-Smith — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bruce PlantID (talk • contribs) 14:20, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello Bruce. I'll admit I've not personally seen this type of arrangement previously when answering verification requests, but I don't see why we couldn't work it out. Would probably be best if Keir sent the email with the attached agreement from a verifiable account (i.e., Keir@MorsePhotos.net or what have you, and not Kier.Morse@gmail.com, which anyone could register). He should include the wording from COM:CONSENT along with a specific license (e.g., "CCBYSA 3.0" and not simply "CCBYSA"), and an explicit statement that he authorizes you (specifically acting under the username Bruce PlantID) to execute the agreement on selected photos.
Of course he should understand that, per the wording of COM:CONSENT, these licenses are irrevocable, and if he authorizes you to do so via a legal agreement between the two of you, they cannot come back later and disagree with your decision making on particular photos. It may also behoove him to make such an agreement time-limited, and you can contact us again if the arrangements need to be extended. Feel free to ping me or post on my talk page and I can try to take a look at the message once it's sent in. GMGtalk 14:46, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Uploading pictures of pages from a book

Hello, can I take pictures of pages of a book (published 15 years ago) and upload them? What kind of permission/ licence do I need? Many thanks, --Msbbb (talk) 15:37, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Hey Msbbb. This depends on the date of publication of the image, rather than the date of publication of the book. We can probably be more helpful if you can be more specific regarding the image you would like to use. GMGtalk 15:40, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Language code (sms: Skolt Saami) not recognized

Hello. I've uploaded some photos with descriptions that I've tried to use the sms language code with, but the uploader states "Unrecognized value for parameter language: sms." so there's clearly a problem with this language code. When I check out the file pages such as this one, the problem is real as the language doesn't show up in the caption box at all (caption in Skolt Saami: peeʹrvesǩ, sääʹmniõđid keäʹpper') and it only shows up as Sms in the summary. Furthermore, this most likely affects quite a few of the Saami languages, since Northern Saami is the only one that always works, so it'd be good to get this resolved asap. Thanks for the help. -Yupik (talk) 17:55, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Official journal images

I am web admin of the Regional Studies Association - we own the copyrights to our journal covers but I am unable to add them to our page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_Studies_Association and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_Studies_(magazine). One of the journal images (TPG) is out of date and I cannot replace it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DrAlexHolmes (talk • contribs) 11:29, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

@DrAlexHolmes: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Each jpg image you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller images, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you made the images yourself, please upload the full-size original of them, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the images, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the copyright holder(s) license them on your website or send the images and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:45, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
The other possibility is to leave Commons out of this entirely and do this all within en-wiki as non-free content. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. Sadly the page has now been completely deleted. Is there any way it can be un-deleted? DrAlexHolmes (talk) 12:32, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

That would be entirely an en-wiki question. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Disappearing text in SVG file

Hi! I am wondering if someone could explain to me why it is the full text on my SVG files are fine when I click on them and open in full screen, but when they are thumb images on commons or Wikipedia some of the text is gone. Any ideas? (below are examples of what I mean. Click on them in commons and then click again to see them in full screen, where the disappearing text magically reappears.) I am using Affinity Designer on Mac. Not sure if this is a vector graphics editing problem or commons problem. Pharexia (talk) 01:08, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:2019belmont.jpg

Hi,

I was hoping to copy the license of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2018_Belmont_Stakes_logo.png for this year's logo. However, I see that free-use logos don't seem to be allowed any longer. Perhaps this logo should just be added to speedydelete. Apologies if I caused an issue. I tried to delete the file myself but I don't see a delete area.

--Kharri1073 (talk) 18:29, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi Kharri1073,
This logo is at Wikipedia in English, they allowed some uploads under Fair use, so this don't need to be deleted.
However, if you have any other reason to delete, check Wikipedia:Guide to image deletion to do it, we do things a little bit different.
-- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 18:39, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi Rodrigo.Argenton,
Thank you. I noticed this on the upload page, "In addition, claims of fair use are explicitly NOT and will NEVER be permitted on Commons." Due to that, I figured this file would need to be removed. I'm not exactly sure how to tag the image for free use with rational. I tried to add the tag 'Non-free logo|image has rationale=yes' but the preview changed the appearance to speedy delete.

On The Use of Official Parliamentary Portraits

Hello. I'm a newbie to Wikimedia Commons and as such, I just want to state that I know very little when it comes to things like these. I wanted to know if posting and using official parliamentary portraits that can be found on a governmental website were allowed. The pictures that I specifically want to use are from the Lithuanian Parliament's official website (www.lrs.lt), more specifically (https://www.lrs.lt/sip/portal.show?p_r=8801&p_k=1&filtertype=0). I myself obviously didn't take the pictures, but I was wondering if the photos were considered public property and were allowed usage and posting to Wikimedia Commons.

I'm very sorry if the question was dumb and if the sentences were not clear. I am a newbie and a person to whom English is a second language. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beetbadgetom (talk • contribs) 12:53, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Beetbadgetom: Your question was very clear, and it's always best to ask first if you are unsure. In some countries such as the United States, Indonesia and the Philippines, some or all government works are in the public domain by law or by policy. As far as I can tell, that does not apply to works of the Lithuanian government, and in fact, there is a copyright notice at the bottom of the page. We can't host these photos unless the copyright holder is willing to publish them under a free license. LX (talk, contribs) 14:14, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Need help with uploading or undeleting a file.

I recently attempted to upload an image of me that was originally uploaded I think in 2017. I was on Wikimedia Commons from then until fairly recently when it was deleted for reasons I don't really understand.... so my attempts to upload the image is really my attempt to replace the image. Perhaps I should have been requesting an undelete of the original image from 2017. This image along with several other of my images have been tagged for deletion, but I can't locate my login for that account. I've uploaded a different image but so happen to not like this image quite as well as the original image. Also if you can make the explanation easy to understand it would be very helpful as to how I can gain permission to restore or re upload this image. Can you help me?Tate1956 (talk) 15:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

@Tate1956: Multiple Admins disagree with you per Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2019-05#File:Kent Tate.jpg. If you are the photographer, please send permission via OTRS. If not, please have the photographer send permission with a carbon copy to you. Your old account appears to be Cheri Brown. See also Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Cheri Brown.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:17, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi @Jeff G.: , I went to the OTRS link and saw an e-mail template; however, the template asks for the url for the file which I would suppose is applicable for files not yet deleted. Anyway, would the correct url address to be inserted be: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kent_Tate.jpg? Also can I copy & paste this template (filling in the appropriate info & deleted red instructions) into an e-mail and send it from my website e-mail address. If so, does my e-mail address need to contain my name? I typically us a contactus e-mail address for my website that also does not contain my name but is clearly all about me. I apologize for the needed hand holding but it sounds like you all have quite a heavy workload and I would like to submit the approval correctly so when you get to processing it - it has been submitted correctly. Thanks!Tate1956 (talk) 17:49, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
@Tate1956: That URL is fine. Your real name is required, but will be kept private if you choose another name for attribution. info and contact addresses can typically be used if there is no email address visible on a website, but technically only postmaster and abuse addresses are required to work.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:09, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Okay thanks. On the website there is the contactus address available the Contact as a link for e-mailing me. Sorry but I don't know what you mean by... 'but technically only postmaster and abuse addresses are required to work.'Tate1956 (talk) 19:25, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
@Tate1956: '"Postmaster@domain" is required to be valid' and 'has been reserved, so that users can be guaranteed at least one valid address at a site' per Sections 6.3 and C.6 of Internet Standard #11 and RFC 822 "Standard for the format of ARPA Internet text messages", 'A host that supports a receiver-SMTP MUST support the reserved mailbox "Postmaster"' per Section 5.2.7 of Internet Standard #3 and RFC 1123 "Requirements for Internet Hosts - Application and Support", and 'Any system that includes an SMTP server supporting mail relaying or delivery MUST support the reserved mailbox "postmaster" as a case-insensitive local name' per Section 4.5.1 of RFC 2821 "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol".   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:18, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

The VeggieTales Show logo JATheEditor (talk) 01:39, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

@JATheEditor: Thank you for your reply. Regarding the logo, it is deemed to be exceeding the Threshold of originality. As a result, the copyright of the logo would be owned by its copyright owner Big Idea Entertainment, and it should not be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons unless further permission from the company is given. By the way, there is a fair use version of the logo on English Wikipedia, perhaps you may want to have a look on it? Please tell me your queries if you really have, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 08:33, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Need to check deleted files

Hello. I’m writing on behalf of User:19Tarrestnom65. She is a volunteer at Museu Valencià d’Etnologia. She collaborates with them in their Commons activity. She does not speak English. That’s why I’m writing in her place.

A number of files uploaded by the museum have been deleted because the source of derivative work was not properly indicated. We are trying to find the source of the files, but we just don’t have the original files that were uploaded. Therefore, we need access to the deleted files.

We do know that all source material was from Wiki Loves Falles and Wiki Loves Folk contests, so that is reusable. But we want to specify the exact files.

The deleted files we need access to are:

File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-1.pdf

File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-2.pdf

File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-3.pdf

File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-4.pdf

File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-5.pdf

File:Cara 4 wiki loves folf falles 2018.jpg

@Explicit: Please, if you could help me. B25es (talk) 19:00, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

@B25es: I have temporarily undeleted the files. The correct links to the first four file are as follows:

Please specify the sources for the original images on each of the file's description pages. Thanks you. xplicit 01:10, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

@B25es: Issues remain for these files: File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-1.jpg, File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-2.jpg, File:AF-XIRIMBOLO-WIKI-LOVES-FOLK-2019-5.pdf, and File:Xirimbolo falles 2019 museo 03.png. There is no source for the the Associació d'Estudis Fallers logo or the QR code. You also linked File:Wiki Loves Folk Logo.svg in three of them, but it do not appear to be included in any of the images. xplicit 02:20, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks. Then, for my better understanding, we have four files with problems:

Then we have the Ad'EF logo thing, which is tricky (they were part of the party and want their colours shown but ...) and the QR thing. WLFolk is the easy part, I'm quite sure it's in Commons, I don't know why did/didn't put it in some xirimbolos. Ok. I've homework for this wonderful Sunday morning. B25es (talk) 07:13, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

@B25es: How is this coming along? xplicit 03:56, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
@Explicit: Sorry for my delay. We don't have a liberated Ad'EF logo. They haven't provided one yet. I'm quite happy with keeping the five files we have mended and I don't think polite on my part to ask for more time when I don't know when I will have the proper licenses. So I think that the four unsolved files should be deleted. If/When Ad'EF uploaded their logo, files could be reuploaded. And thank you for your help and patience. @Intoextreme: Hi, and welcome. The logo atop http://www.oceanrowing.com/ looks complex, over the TOO in both the UK and the US. Please have the copyright holder post permission for the logo with a COM:L compliant license on their website or send permission with the logo's URL and COM:CONSENT verbiage confirming that they understand what they are agreeing to via OTRS, with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:05, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much for speedy response, will do. Could you please help me to understand if uploading it would mean that it is still protected? Intoextreme (talk) 15:15, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
Yes, all images and graphics are automatically protected once they are creative enough. So it doesn't matter who uploads to which online platform. Only the copyright holder can issue a free licence for a complex logo like this. De728631 (talk) 20:04, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Finding transclusions with certain syntax

Several built-in-US-state-in-year templates, e.g. NewYorkArc, originally required more extensive coding than they do now, and at least some transclusions have been manually repaired, e.g. this edit, which changed to 190. How would one go about looking for categories currently transcluding instead of XXX? It would be nice to update any transclusions of templates that have since been simplified, but my main concern is ascertaining whether any templates still require the more complicated code. Nyttend (talk) 22:29, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Nyttend: For a specific place, you can search the Category namespace for something like insource:/\{\{NewYorkArc\|[0-9]{3}\|[0-9]\|[0-9]{4}\|[0-9]{4}\}\}/. Adding more fuzziness to the place part, like insource:/\{\{[A-Z][a-z]+Arc\|[0-9]{3}\|[0-9]\|[0-9]{4}\|[0-9]{4}\}\}/ seems to be a bit much for the little search engine's head to handle to give complete results, but you still get a few thousand hits. LX (talk, contribs) 23:39, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
LX, please, do not use pure regex for search queries. The help page has several warnings about this – with regex the whole data has to be searched, and due to this you probably ran in a timeout. Instead narrow the searched data by using one of the other filters that search on the index and, if possible, by selection of the namespace. Here in Nyttend’s case hastemplate is the ideal choice, and as I noticed only categories use this template. Also I would add some search for possible space chars and |1= etc., and the first character of a template can be written in either letter case. So, Nyttend, how about category: hastemplate:newyorkarc insource:/\{\{\s*[Nn]ewYorkArc\s*\|\s*(1=)?[0-9]{3}\s*\|\s*(2=)?[0-9]\s*\|\s*(3=)?[0-9]{4}\s*\|\s*(4=)?[0-9]{4}\s*\}\}/? I get with this query 37 results in the moment (which have only upper case as first letter and no spaces in between, hmpf). The \s could by the way replaced with real space chars, if this helped for looking on the search query: check it out. — Speravir – 21:43, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello everyone, I am requring actual help here as I believe I have been treated poorly by biased and non-understandable administrators.

I am a blocked user on wikipedia after having a bad argument regarding an accusation on me apparently sockpuppeting. This lead to me being blocked indefeinetly. My attitude on wikipedia was also a contributing factor in which I will also admit.

Until yesterday I have come back to make an appeal on my ban here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:OrbitalEnd48401#April_2019_2 . My rquest to be unblocked was this: I think I'm doing this right but if not I'll tweak it.

Before I start I would like to apologise to every user that I have encountered on wikipeida for making you uncomfortable, for annoying you in anyway. My intentions on being here were not to perpuosly cause distruction. It all started with an accident personal to me in which the page that was created I believer was not treated with respect. So I created an account not only to fix that date, but to fix and tweak other air accidents as well. To some of you an air accident is nothing out of the ordinary, accidents happen all the time such as the Miami Accident that happened today. But to make it clear to you all, I am not happy with the way I have reacted to certain situations. Mainly because I see accidents as something that should be remembored and presented clearfully and respectfully. I have taken a break from the interent after the Sockpuppet situation the other week. That time away from the internet has given me time to re-think the way I have behaved on wikipedia, and I know it wasn't right, I looked through some of the messages I have sent to other people.

I want to redeem myself to you all, and I want to prove that to you by writing out a tabl in which I will always follow. If I break it or if I fall into my old ways, block me. I say it now, if I do either of those block me. Because I want my second chance to show every single one of you that I can do good here.

− − My table:

  • If I make an edit that could lead to an edit war, I will make a dicussion about it and tag other users. If my the other people think my edit is wrong, I will either deal with it, or I will continue to dicuss it ambicantly.
  • Regarding these unconstructive edits such as changing formats, I have properly learnt which date format should go now after discussing it with another user. Regarding infoboxes on air accidents, if there are tables that need updating and so on, I will do that. If there is anything out of my reach or if I need help, I will leave a message on that pages 'talk page'.
  • I will always talk to people respectfully no matter the situation.
  • If I forget the rules I will always turn to the help pages. Or I will ask other users.
  • I will make sure every edit I do has no errors and is reference / cited properly.
  • My sandbox will hold bits and bobs along with a small ?blog? about some accidents (potientally).

I would like to start a fresh and I would like to make ammends to every user I've encountered on Wikipedia. Whether that is sending apology messages to their talk page or anything else. I really want to sort everything out before I start editing again. My main goals are to sort the old Aerflot accidents, along with updating od untouched pages. If you remove the block off me, I promise that you will see a massive difference in the way I behave and interact with others. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 19:26, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

I have had an extremely rough day because after appealing my ban yesterday I found out another sockpuppet accusation had been also been made on the 4th (yesterday). To make it clear I am not sockpuppeting. I have had a very rough day because of the accusation making my patience go earlier on. To make it clear, when I was passing the time awaiting for someone to make a decision on my ban I had a user by the name of: Bbb23 berrade me telling what I shouldn't be doing. All I was doing honestly was preparing myself to be unblocked as a I wanted to show everyone that I am ready to change and to also start editing. Along with to apologise to every user I have encontered. At the end of today around half an hour ago I had this user: Jauerback , decline my request because of my last comment I made.

Now I'd like to make a clear statement because this is all I have, I am very very sorry. All I ever want is to have the ability to edit on wikipedia. It's something I enjoy so much which is why I want to come back as a new person with changes made to the way I mainly interact with other users. Honestly I could've reacted a lot better today but I got overwhealmed with being told not to anything. All I ask to anyone reading this, whether you are an administrator or an ordinary user is to help me in anyway. Because I can't file another unblock request and this has me deeply saddened. I want my ban to be reviewed by an unbiased burecrat. I want a second chance at being able to edit at wikipedia because it's something I give up my time to do. I enjoy it here and there are even articles that hit home to me.

I am not perfect, but when I get bombared with a lot of stuff in one day everyones bound to snap. I geniuinely did not mean to snap. All I ask is to be given a proper second chance at Wikipedia because I know full well I am good at it if I behave and follow the rules. Please reconisder my ban because it's the closest thing I have to air accident articles. I am not a social person honestly I am not, but that is not an excuse to behave the way I have on Wikipedia.

I would really like it if any of you could help get a second chance because takes away something I love. I've had close relatives be involved in accidents that are documented on Wikipedia. If you would like to contact me for more detail feel free to: alex.hoe12@hotmail.com .

And please, please reconsider my ban. I am very sorry for the way I have behaved. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 22:27, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi,

In doing so (see above), we get the message that the material is used over the internet and automatically is blocked.

We want to unblock it an publish it free to use to change.

Please let us know what to do to tackle the subject!

Company annual reports

I want to know what to do in this particular situation. I'm updating a table and I want to source the info from this file. This is a annual report file and I can't seem to find any information regarding the copyright guidelines. Can I upload the file to Wikipedia? CroGamer 1 (talk) 18:52, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

The copyright guidelines say, right at the top:
Wikimedia Commons only accepts media
  • that are explicitly freely licensed, or
  • that are in the public domain in at least the United States and in the source country of the work.
No license is given for the report, which means that the default (all rights reserved) applies. The report is not in the public domain either, because it is both too new to be out of copyright and original enough to be eligible for copyright. This means that you may not upload the file here. A stand-alone table from the report might fall under PD-text. --rimshottalk 20:06, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Information about Simplicity Vacuum Company

Please someone tell me why there is no information on Simplicity Vacuum Company. They are a large manufacture of vacuum systems. Simplicity appears to not be an independent company, but a brand of en:Tacony Corporation, which has a Wikipedia article, but no media on Commons. Their web site lists all of their brands, too. If you have one of their devices, e.g. a vacuum cleaner, feel free to take a photograph and upload it here! It can then be used to illustrate Tacony's Wikipedia article. --rimshottalk 20:16, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

And another question, the information on the Engelish page about our company is rather old. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univ%C3%A9). Can you place the logo on this page aswell? I would like te rerwrite this information, but can ik change it while i've a dutch account?

  • @Unive2019: Your logo looks simple enough to not be eligible for copyright, so it should be fine here using Textlogo in lieu of a license. Please upload as a new file and do not overwrite the file for any existing logo: we are just as concerned with history as with current information.
  • Once the photo is on Commons, you (or someone) can change the relevant articles to use the new logo instead of the old one.

Adding pictures of Famous Ayatollah.

Hello there, I hope that all is good. I am trying to add pictures of Ayatollah so that when someone can see their great work, we can at least see an image of them. Every time I try, it gets taken down.

How can I successfully upload picture of them? It seems every picture is copyrights which is not fair because these are Ayatollah, they are people in which have a following and should be open for everyone.

I uploaded a picture with a link directly from the official website of Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Shirazi and it was taken down? How if it is from his official website?

If you can inform me how i can successfully upload a picture i will appreciate it, so i can contribute successfully to Wikipedia. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ali313korosh (talk • contribs) 02:19, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

  • @Ali313korosh: Having a following or being famous has nothing to do with the matter. These images were not taken down because they were out of scope: they were taken down because you cannot offer a license to use a photo where someone else owns the copyright.
  • It looks like he has a very professional website, but oddly the site does not offer an email contact. However, they have numerous social media accounts, so it should be possible to communicate with them. By far the simplest thing would be if there is a photo whose copyright-owner is willing to make available under a suitable free license, one that complies with Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain: I recommend Cc-by-sa 4.0 as the most restrictive common license that still meets our needs. If his organization owns the copyright, they can post that photo with the appropriate license on their official site or on one or another of the social media accounts listed on their official site. If someone else owns the copyright, then that individual or organization can do the equivalent. Then you can cite that official posting with license as your source, and can upload here with the same license. - Jmabel ! talk —Preceding comment was added at 10 May 2019, 04:03:49 (UTC)

Ah, sorry, AliSnggl (by the way: Please, sign your messages, this is a policy here in Commons; you should have an according button in the edit toolbar, or you can do it manually by writing --~~~~).
Regarding your question: According to IEEE Xplore Digital Library Terms of Use you are not allowed to use the graph. But you can use the data if you find it somewhere and create your own graph (which often even looks better) using a Wikimedia tool (but set a link to the data). Thanks ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mapache del Raton (talk • contribs) 10:21, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

  • @Mapache del Raton: Within Commons file pages, we don't want to replace one map with another: both belong here.
  • On Commons gallery pages ("main space") and in other projects such as Wikipedia, the solution is to change which Commons file is referenced on the page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: Thanks for your answer and sorry if it sounds like a silly question or if it was answered before. When I try to upload my file I have the following message "A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:Unibicameral Map.svg and replace it there". This is exactly what I want to do, so I'm going to the page but there, I can't manage to find a way for my file to be referenced and "replace" (even if that is not the spirit, I got what you said) the previous one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mapache del Raton (talk • contribs) 12:45, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
    • Two ways to go here:
      1. It looks like File:Unibicameral Map.svg has been updated multiple times by multiple peuople, so it's one of the (few) files on here where it apparently would be OK to overwrite someone else's work. On the page, you will find a link labeled "Upload a new version of this file". You can use that; make sure you write a summary on your upload that explains what you are changing and why.
      2. Perhaps I was unclear, but the advice above involved uploading under a different filename of your choosing. That is what I meant by not replacing the old map.
        • I hadn't looked closely at this particular case when I gave this advice, and I hadn't realized how many Wikipedias reference this image, and how many of those are in a variety of alphabets, etc. I think that in the circumstances you'd be fine to go the other way, and use -"Upload a new version of this file". Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: Perfect, I finally managed to upload my updated version thanks to you. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mapache del Raton (talk • contribs) 14:50, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

How to upload a photo of my grandfather into the entry about him in WIkipedia

I recently discovered an entry for my grandfather. No picture is provided and I wanted to rectify that. I have many photos of him, all more than 60 years old, in our photo albums. Some are already available in the public domain. No details of the photographers are available. Can I upload one of them to wikipedia?

— Speravir – 18:19, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
— Speravir – 18:43, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Vielen Dank. Ich mache so etwas derart selten, dass ich einfach nicht durchblicke. Munich denke ich nicht, weil der Eigenname der Klinik ja Klinik Augustinum München lautet. Danke auch für den Hinweis auf das deutschsprachige Forum. Gruß, --Anselm Rapp (talk) 19:02, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
— Speravir – 19:07, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Ah ja, das ist gut. Es gibt in München das Wohnstift Augustinum und die Klinik Augustinum, und beide gehören zur Augustinum Gruppe. (Weitere Bilder kommen aber nicht mehr von mir.) Gruß, --Anselm Rapp (talk) 19:13, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi,

I uploaded a fixed version of File:Root_system_C2.svg here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Root_system_C2_(fixed).svg

I fixed the reference from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_system , but there are a bunch of other ones on non-English pages and I think it would be better just to overwrite the original file. However, I see "You cannot overwrite this file." on File:Root_system_C2.svg . Would it be possible for an admin to do this?

Abdulrahman.
In English:
Actually every time that you would upload a photo here use the maximum quality possible, to increase the range of possibles uses, for example, press photos benefit a lot with very high resolutions. The usage in a wiki you can control the size of it using | xxx px where xxx could be any value, normally between 100 to 300 px, that is the weight of the image.I.e.:

Just one more thing, categorise your contributions, it's important include categories to better arrange your file. The first steps in English are not that great but if you want: First steps

Need help to rejuvenate old projects

Hi there,

I'm working to resuscitate Featured video candidates and Featured sound candidates, but I am not much familiar with templates and other things. Can anyone help me rejuvenate these near-dead projects ?

Here is a small list of problems that I'm facing right now

  • I want the Template:FVCnomNewerPreload to automatically add a link to the absolute URL, as the media-wiki can't play videos above 1080P.
  • I need a BOT for promoting and closing the candidates similar to User:FPCBot or QICbot.( Source of FPCBot can be used )
  • I need help in creating categories for these two projects ( similar to Featured pictures )
  • Graphics for the these two new projects are not ready
  • Inviting participants, as these projects were dead for about a decade, We need to inform users about their revival.

Thanks -- Eatcha (Talk-Page ) 10:01, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Eatcha,
If you go to Village Pump you will see how receptive the community is with videos.
Videos are not the future, is the present... and Wikimedians seems to not realise that.
That said, the best idea is unite this two, to have a stronger force. For me I would unite with FP, however the active community down there is not also welcoming to videos. Create a Featured Media, or something like that.
And how about you simply things? Do not create categories yet, i.e.
You will have different types of categories... we can have long videos, time lapses, ... only time will tell, I can't built this by now.
And the criteria also shouldn't be the same, for example, subtitles in videos that have lines, should be mandatory, because of accessibility... You need to make clear that at end is not a problem to credit the authors, and also not mandatory... thing that are important to video, not important to photos. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 03:54, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

PjJnep,
Welcome to Wikimedia Commons!
But you made a common and understandable mistake.
The photo is not in public domain, been available at internet do not mean that is a public domain media.
Public domain, means that the author do not have more rights about that media.
To this happen he most be dead for longer than 70 years (not the case), or explicit, in a formal way, they have to sign a waiver, giving up any rights about the media.
Not the case, so this file will be deleted, but that's okay, mistakes happen.

@World Youth Forum: If the images are not personally created by you, you need a formal written permission from the copyright holder. Please see COM:OTRS for the instructions. Alternatively, the images could be allowed if they were published by the copyright holder on a website with a free license (this would also be faster, as there is a big backlog in OTRS). MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-filename appears when you picked a problematic name; it's unrelated to the Flickr image. Generally, this means that your filename was really generic, e.g. "Picture.jpg", or had other problems, e.g. "GOOD DESCRIPTIVE NAME BUT WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS.JPG". Things should go fine if you pick a good filename and write it normally, e.g. "Stone house with two windows in InsertPlaceNameHere.jpg". Nyttend (talk) 04:02, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Creating a diagram based on data of a journal article

Hi, I am planning to create a diagram to add on an article that I'm currently working on, based on a diagram from a journal article. The basic structure and component of my diagram would be the same with one that is published (the diagram would be a simplified version of one that is published), so I am worried that my diagram would not be sufficiently original. Is this acceptable? --Hojichamilktea (talk) 08:30, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

  • That really depends on how complex and original the diagram from the journal article was. There's no solid, abstract answer to this. The best guideline is that facts can't be copyrighted, so the more differently you can present the same facts,, the better off you are. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

If the image is out of copyright, and nothing else in the image is copyrightable, you should be fine. Hard to know a definitive answer without seeing the poster or knowing more details. Hey Samirzahirovic. The criteria for speedy deletion on Commons allows for users to request that their own uploads be summarily deleted, but only within a week of uploading. Many of your files have been around for about a year or more, and are currently being used 248 times on various Wikimedia projects. We do not allow self-requested deletion of such long standing files unless there is some other reason why they would not be appropriate for Commons. GMGtalk 12:51, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I think you are presuming too much context. @Karabo.Ramagaga: as indicated at Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain, Commons can only host images that are either in the public domain (won't be relevant here) or where the holder of the copyright grants a free license that allows (at a minimum) free reuse for any purpose, including commercial, and the creation of derivative works. More details at the linked page. What Jeff is saying is, effectively, what would have to happen to have evidence of such a license. From what you are saying, they don't seem to be interested in granting such a license, so Commons probably can't host this photo. - Jmabel ! talk 22:44, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

I took a screenshot and edited it in Paint.NET. While I'm happy to release my part of the work under CC-BY-SA, is the fact this is a screenshot of a copyrighted website mean it should be removed from Commons, as it may not be free? Fuse809 (talk) 02:27, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Greetings, how can this video be uploaded to Commons? It seems to be adequately licensed and it's on an educational topic for which we have Category:Hells Bells and en:Hells Bells. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:45, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Permission to enter Dominican Republic

Hi my name is Michael Rehrig, I'm searching for an answer about wether I will be allowed into the Dominican Republic if I am currently on County Probation in PA. Even tho I may be givin the permission from my county probation department, will I have a problem entering the Dominican Republic? I just received my passport, but will I still be denied entry just because I'm on probation in Pennsylvania? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael P Rehrig (talk • contribs) 22:16, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

I have no idea. This is a venue for asking questions about Wikimedia Commons - how to use this online image repository, how to upload and download images, etc.. Sorry, but you're asking a question about serious legal matters and you will have to get an answer to your question elsewhere. Ask the Embassy of the Dominican Republic or ask the US Passport folks or maybe an immigration lawyer - We cannot help you. Shearonink (talk) 23:07, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
Personal note: you will probably not be denied to enter Dominican Republic, if you are coming there to spend Dollars (or Euros), they will let you in anyway. But be aware that if the US wants you back, they will find you right there, they will wipe their ass with the sovereignty of the Dominican Republic and they will come over and catch you. How could I change the profile photo?

Hi there. This is Kiichiro. I would like to change the profile photo of Yukiko Mishima. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%89%E5%B3%B6%E6%9C%89%E7%B4%80%E5%AD%90 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Umetaro1986 (talk • contribs) 11:31, 17 May 2019 (UTC) She is a movie director and then I am her manager. She asked me to change the photo on wikipedia to the photo on her official website. https://www.yukikomishima.com/pages/2286214/profile

Actually, I tried to do that yesterday, but this morning wikimedia commons appeared "this file is a copyright violation because it comes from: https://www.cinemacafe.net/article/2017/09/05/52297.html" But this photo is her profile photo... Please let me know how I could change the profile photo.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Umetaro1986 (talk • contribs) 11:25, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

@Umetaro1986: Thank you for your question. Please inform the photographer of Miss Mishima's profile photo to send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (English) or permissions-ja@wikimedia.org (Japanese) according to the instructions of OTRS (Japanese instructions). An OTRS volunteer would then undelete the image and process your permission. Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions, and you may also want to ask for translation if you cannot speak good English, thank you!廣九直通車 (talk) 12:34, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
  • @Umetaro1986: Convenience links: File:Mishima.jpg, File:Yukiko Mishima.jpg
  • Sorry this has become a mess, and it may be a little harder to sort out now that the images were rejected than it would have been beforehand.
  • What 廣九直通車 says will work, but OTRS has quite a backlog. Assuming your client has a website or other official web presence of her own, a quicker thing to do would be to put the image on your own site, indicate who owns the copyright (the photographer, unless the license has been formally transferred) and under what license the photo is available. Then you can cite your own website as the source.
  • If you had not already uploaded, it would be easy to then upload, but just re-uploading a deleted photo is against policy. At this point, you need to go through Commons:Undeletion requests. Please, when you do that, give the links in the form :File:Mishima.jpg, :File:Yukiko Mishima.jpg so they will know which images you mean.
  • You might yet have to go through OTRS if anyone doubts that a photographer signed over their rights to you, but at least you will be able to clarify more quickly what supporting documentation someone thinks is required. - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Getting the license

How can i get a licence from creative common for my photos? Or the procedurus to get it — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adindaputri24 (talk • contribs) 17:04, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

If you took the photos yourself, you can just pick a Creative Commons licence of your choice and add it to whereever you publish your photo. You don't have to contact Creative Commons or anyone else. For use at Wikimedia Commons, we have templated bits of Wiki code for these licences, and the Upload Wizard has a drop-down menu where you can simply choose a licence. I need a review of the following photos from de.Wikipedia

Emanuel Kudela.
I'd like to add it to Kudela's entry at List of cyclists with a cycling-related death. Am going through the English Wikipedia list-article trying to find entries that are missing photos and just found two more...

If someone could please review these 2 photos and upload them to Commons (if they pass review) that would be a big help. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 17:19, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Not done@Shearonink: Thank you for your request. Unfortunately it is not possible for us to upload the two images to Wikimedia Commons, since they are marked not to be uploaded to Commons. Do you have any reasons that these images are suitable to be moved to Commons? Please further explain.廣九直通車 (talk) 12:37, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
? Both photos are marked as needing review not as "unsuitable".
  • The Willy Schmitter/Peguy one was taken by an unknown photographer before 1906, published in 1906, and therefore would seem to be in the Public Domain since it has been 113 years since the date of publication and the photographer has to be dead.
  • The Josef Schwarzer photo was taken before 1909 by an unknown photographer, published in 1909, and would also seem to be in the Public domain since it has been 110 years since the date of publication and the photographer has to be dead.
I am trying to fill in the photoless individual entries in List of cyclists with a cycling-related death. If I am wrong about these photos being in the public domain oh well! but there are no other photos of these men available to me and that is not unusual for these early cyclists. For instance, I have been unable to find any pictures of Bert Harris - I personally think this is amazing...he was one of the most famous sportsmen-athletes of his day, thousands of people attended his funeral procession and no one took a photo of him while he was alive?!? I also do not have access to the source material, these photos were uploaded to the de.Wikipedia by the wonderful Nicola from a German-language original held at a library/archive. Shearonink (talk) 15:16, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Is it really not possible for these photos to be uploaded to Commons? Shearonink (talk) 20:25, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
  • I know it's weird, but in these terms 113 years really isn't quite enough unless we have something more (e.g. taken in a country that makes particular allowance for anonymous work). Let's say the photographer was 25, lived to be 80; that means they died 58 years ago, and most countries grant copyright for life + 70 years. Again, there are exceptions, but we'd need specifics. We had to draw the line somewhere for PD-old-assumed, and we chose 120 years (which, as the example just given shows, still isn't entirely safe). - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree...it is weird. So it's no photos at all for these men on the List. And there isn't a fair-use exception for only known photos of subjects long-dead. Hmm. Oh well. Thanks for the explanation. Shearonink (talk) 17:24, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: These are perfectly fine just as the first image Shearonink requested. PD-EU-anonymous and PD-1923 apply here. De728631 (talk) 17:27, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
That's fine with me. I was just saying that "113 years old" is not enough to imply OK. - Jmabel ! talk 01:06, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Since I (sort of) have a COI here, being that I am the one who requested that these pics be uploaded to Commons, if policy/guidelines are indicating that they pass "Commons-review" if someone else could upload them I would be grateful. Image-use/permissions are not my strong suit plus I don't want to cast any shadows on these pics getting reviewed so if someone else would upload them or not or whatever and leave an update here in this thread that would be great/helpful/awesome. Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 03:21, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
No worries, I have uploaded the other two images at Commons. De728631 (talk) 15:17, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

CC0 caption text?

While uploading using the wizard, I found that I was obliged to license my image description text under CC0. In the case of captions copied from a PD or CC-SA source, I can't legally do this. Separately, I sometimes write very long texts (see my last upload). I also sometimes include the code needed to reconstruct the image. I want to license my original image-associated text material under a sharealike license (CC-SA and the GFDL would be fine). Does this mean I have to upload images with no caption text, and just upload the caption text on each language wiki, cross-wiki link the image page to a page in my draft space or something? Or is there an easier way to upload text with another license? I did look for info on this on Commons, but did not find it.

Secondly, is there any way to make the wizard accept "1763" or "late 9th century" as publication dates? HLHJ (talk) 22:36, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

  • CC-0 only applies to the "caption" (a recent structured data addition) not to the "description". You can leave out a "caption" entirely. (Unless I'm missing something: have they changed the Wizard to require a caption, or merged it with the "description"? I never use the Wizard, I use Special:Upload.) In any case, both caption and description text can be added by editing the file page in Commons, no need to go to individual-language Wikipedias. If that's not entirely clear, ping me & I'll help you sort it out.
  • Again: not sure what the Wizard will accept, but both of those can easily be done by editing the file page after uploading. Or maybe you, like me, would do better to use Special:Upload, which lets you do things explicitly in Wikitext (although, sadly, does not currently support the new "captions", just "descriptions"). "1763" is trivial there; "late 19th century" would be be best done with "between", e.g. 1870 becomes between 1870 and 1899
    date QS:P,+1850-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1319,+1870-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1326,+1899-00-00T00:00:00Z/9
    . - 01:18, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
None of these little icons... apparently they were in some of the mockups, but were never discussed (see discussion)
I prefer some of the other tools too, but the wizard is in the sidebar and it's what I mostly use in practise. On the "Describe" page of the Wizard, where you fill in the image title, captions, description, date, and categories, there is a box at the bottom of all that that says "License for captions contributions only (this applies to caption text, NOT the file) By clicking "publish", you agree to the terms of use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons CC0 License." I wasn't sure if this applied to the description text, which I think of as the caption. If it only applies to the "caption" section, that's a lot better, but the UI is ambiguous. I think the "Description" field ought to come first (it's easier to sumarize something you've just written out in full) and the bit above the "Caption" field that says "Optional" ought to also indicate that the contents of this field will be released under CC0. Putting the license at the bottom of the entire page mislead me into thinking that it applied to the whole page. I'd also like an info-icon link to Commons:File captions, and I'd like that page to describe why the captions are CC0 without the option and link to the discussion of it, which I can't find. "License for captions contributions only (this applies to the text in the "Caption" text field, NOT the file)" would also be clearer. HLHJ (talk) 01:03, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
The structured data fields ("Depicts") also don't say what license you release the data under. The Open Database License? Ir would be good to know, structured data looks technically good and I'd like to be able to contribute. HLHJ (talk) 01:41, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Regarding your question: No, it is not possible to change the name. — Speravir – 17:58, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Another image question...

So. I think this might be an issue... I created a Category in English Wikipedia for some images from the "Texas City disaster" article - "Category:Texas City disaster" and any/all associated images I could find over there (including some images I removed from that article's gallery). After creating the category in Eng WP, I then realized that there was also a Commons Category of "Texas City Disaster". All I was trying to do with creating the WP Cat was to collect all of the Texas City Disaster photos in one place so I could put a link or a See also or something at the article so people could access all the possible Disaster photos collected together in one place. Now, the issue is...not all of the Disaster photos at English Wikipedia have been ported over to Commons. I (or someone who actually knows what they are doing please) would have to review them and transfer them over to Commons and Commons usage is not my strong suit so... did I create the "Texas City disaster" WP Cat in error? etc. How would it be best to proceed... Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 15:54, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Category:Texas City disaster didn't exist yet on the English Wikipedia since you had only tagged the files without creating the category page. I have now created that page to temporarily keep the three files and the article. However, the problem with these files is that they are each licensed under a Creative Commons licence, but the uploader does not seem to be the copyright holder. I.e. the files are all attributed to a certain Alfred S. Gerson. Therefore we need evidence that these photographs are in fact freely available under said CC licence. I have marked the files at Wikipedia for delayed deletion due to missing permission. Unfortunately, the uploader has been inactive since 2015, so I don't see a chance of him reacting anytime soon. De728631 (talk) 16:14, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Oh no! They're going to be deleted? Did some research and Judge Gerson (who the photos are attributed to) passed away in 2013. He was a Judge in Jefferson County Texas and these photos appear to be from his personal collection & date from the Disaster. I am not sure how to find out the photogs name/s... How to merge images?

Hello. I found these two images:

It's the same illustration taken from different sources in different qualities. What is the Commons policy about such cases? Should it be merged somehow? Thanks. Алексей Скрипник (talk) 13:03, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Commons has a plenty of cases of “the same illustration” taken differently. Better to leave as is, otherwise be ready for arguments with editors of Wikipedia and similar sites over which picture to prefer. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 13:18, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file

hello, i translated this image to arabic and im trying to upload it here to commons, but i keep getting this message:

"MiRNA-ar.svg Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file"

can any one tell me what is the problem here. i used inkscape 0.92 and i just translated the english text to arbic, there was no use of CSS what so ever. any help, thank you.--Momas (talk) 23:29, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

How did you convert? did you simply translate the existing strings and safed locally? Because I suspect it is the embedded font file which is btw in my opinion not covered by the free license. Note this: User:Kelvin13/Frutiger. — Speravir – 02:57, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Ping @JoKalliauer. — Speravir – 02:57, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

@Speravir: that is exactely what i did and when i finished i converted the text objects to path via object to path, so it do not scatter like here. i have worked with the font i used in the image before (like here and there was no problems) but not with an image of Kelvin13.

note: i tried to reupload kelvin13's image (that i downloaded from here, and was not translated) and i got the same problem! so i dont think that the problem is from my translated file --Momas (talk) 10:40, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

@Momas and Kelvin13: As @Speravir: suggested it is a problem of the font, more precisely you have to delete src: url("data:font/woff;charset=utf-8;base64,data:application/x-font-ttf;base64,
The security increased therfore old files like this one can't be uploaded any more, but old files containing unsave elements still exist.
I repaired the mentioned file.
@Momas: You can use https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgworkaroundbot/ to remove this issue.
 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 13:05, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

@JoKalliauer and Speravir: thank you very much i finally was able to upload it here, note that your tool didin't work for me, and i had to edit the file with notepad++ and delete all of @font-face {} containing src: url("data:font/woff;charset=utf-8;base64,data:application/x-font-ttf;base64, you mentioned Manually, thank you again and have a good day--Momas (talk) 14:34, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

THX from my side, as well, Johannes. But I fear, all SVG files of KevinSong/Kevin13 have to be checked for the embedded non-free Frutiger Neue font (apparently you did not remove font-family="Frutiger Neue 55", I wonder in which font I see the text now). — Speravir – 17:55, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
@Speravir: hardly any view files of KevinSong/Kevin13 contain such unsave css, but he (almost?) always uses Frutiger Neue, which is a commertical, (500€) font, therefore he uses Path text SVG, which is generally undersireable because it is difficult to edit and it increases file-size, see User:Kelvin13/SVG_text_tutorial for details. However using copyright-fonts might be a copyright-issue? @Incnis Mrsi: I think you know more about the use of copyrighted fonts.
As in File:SVG_Text_tutorial_Text_SVG.svg the font can be replaced by Liberation Sans or Arial but depening on the font-family of Frutiger Neue you need different font-weight "normal"; "bold"; "bolder"; "lighter"; "100"; "200"; "300"; "400"; "500"; "600"; "700"; "800"; "900", see User:Kelvin13/Frutiger for a rough correlation.
 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 18:30, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Can’t offer an expert advice, but for some fonts rsvg maps proprietary font names to free replacements having similar metric. This enabled me to repair the Adobe’s font-family idiocy with some success. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 08:00, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

I'm trying to do a Wikipedia article on Kush Air. I want all of the fields on the Airline infobox to be filled out, that includes that Airline Logo. I want to upload the airline logo, which i found on the old Kush Air Website, but I don't know what information i need to upload it or what restrictions are on it.

I'm also trying to do the same for the Air Kufra logo. I uploaded a very low quality zoomed in screenshot of the Air Kufra logo, but I want the real logo. I asked the company on Facebook if I could use their logo, but they didn't respond. So I don't know what restrictions are on their logo either.

Can I have some help? Pilot0674 (talk) 12:37, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

The Kush Air logo is complex enough to be copyrighted and non-free, so we cannot host it here at Commons without permission from the copyright holder. However, once your article is finished, you can upload this logo locally at the English Wikipedia using this link. This will create a file page with a fair use rationale for use of the image in the Kush Air article only.
As to the Air Kufra logo, that one is simple enough to be exempt from copyright, so you don't need a permission. I have therefore overwritten the first version of File:Air Kufra Logo.png with the clear logo. De728631 (talk) 21:33, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

This is Wikimedia Commons, a repository for free educational media, and not Wikipedia where you tried to set up a page. According to the user name rules of the English Wikipedia I had to block your account over there, because the English Wikipedia does not allow user names that merely consist of the name of a group or company. Accounts there are restricted to single individuals and this should be reflected in the user name. That aside, please do not add pages about your business to Wikipedia yourself. Wikipedia is not the yellow pages but an encyclopedia. If your business is notable, somebody else will write a Wikipedia article about it in due time. De728631 (talk) 20:56, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

@TassoDD: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:21, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much Jeff. I'll follow all of that advice and hopefully get this done soon

  • @TassoDD: Hi again. You may not have noticed: signing one's posts on talk pages here with ~~~~ helps people to find out who wrote something when, and it provides them with a link to one's user and talk pages (for further discussion).
You can have the publisher post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for it on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:52, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Copyright stuff (Couple of questions) regarding images taken from Japanese goverment agencies

Went through some website from a couple of Japanese agencies in Japanese obviously. I noted that their policies allow them to have anyone upload images taken by CC.

PS - Trying to ask here in case no one can answer via the village pump portal.

Questions:

1. The copyright policies are in Japanese with no direct English translation. Here's an example taken from the Japanese MOJ.

The Cabinet Secretariat page has the same thing, except that their policies are dated since last year. I know a little Japanese and it seems that their policies can be used alongside CC 2.0

2. Can a government agency logo be covered as such under the Japanese CC 2.0. Here's an example.

Ominae (talk) 03:29, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

I'm working in corporate communications for the insurance company HanseMerkur. I want to upload the company's logo to Wikimedia, so it can be seen on HanseMerkur's Wikipedia page.

But it seems that uploading a company logo is a juristically difficult topic. For example I'm unsure if uploading the logo forfeits the company's trademark rights to the logo. Then again other companies don't have issues uploading their logos, which makes it seem like there isn't a problem after all.

Could someone please explain if, how and under what circumstances I can safely upload our company's logo without surrendering our company's trademarked rights on it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by HanseUK (talk • contribs) 21 May 2019‎ 11:14 (UTC) (UTC)

Assuming your company is willing to licence its logo so that anyone can use it, redistribute it, and alter it, our policy here is to warn such users using the Trademarked template. That means reusers are at least aware of the trademark status. Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:29, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
To clarify slightly: trademark and copyright are two separate bodies of intellectual property law. The only significant right deriving from copyright law that can be reserved for images on Commons is the right of attribution; however, we do not require any waiver of trademark rights. - Jmabel ! talk 15:28, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

NOOB question

Hello!

Hearst Castle, a California State Park, sells books in their gift shops which may contain the images they also share on their Facebook page by way of having agreed to public use, yet some of their images claim to have a copyright, and I'd like to use them on Wikipedia. I looked in the FAQ, and could not find anything to address this. May I use it if I cite their Facebook page as the source, or would their copyright remain valid? https://www.facebook.com/hearstcastle/photos/a.159475765996/10153836616285997/?type=3&theater

Also, I don't know how to properly cite or attribute the images from Wikimedia I want to add to Wikipedia articles. I've gathered that mentioning the user when making my entry is one way, but I notice citation information at the bottom of wikimedia pages that are not quite finished, and I don't know how to utilize them. Will you please provide a couple examples, if different, or provide a link to a help page that explains it? Thank you Davidlwinkler (talk) 00:54, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

They posted the same image in 2013, but without the copyright notice. Does the later of the two add any validity? https://www.facebook.com/hearstcastle/photos/a.159475765996/10151637983625997/?type=1&theater Davidlwinkler (talk) 01:00, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
@Davidlwinkler: Wikimedia Commons respects copyright law, in source countries, in the United States, and in most countries of the world via the Berne Convention. In those countries, a copyright exists the moment a work is "fixed", rather than requiring registration. In the United States, notice and registration have not been required since 1 March 1989. So no, you may not upload such works here on Commons without permission from the copyright holders. However, please see en:WP:F.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:15, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:54, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Change logo with trade mark registration certificate

Hi, have to modify an old logo and I have the certificate of the trade mark registration. How can I do it? Thank you Francesca — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francytres (talk • contribs) 14:02, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

  • @Francytres: Because Commons is as interested in historical logos as current logos, always upload under a new file name, do not overwrite the old logo. Then, make the change on the individual Wikipedias by changing which Commons file is used there.
  • It would help a lot to see the particular logo in question. If it is sufficiently simple, then you can use Textlogo or PD-ineligible, as appropriate. Otherwise, the owner of the copyright of the logo must release it under a sufficiently free license, either by posting it with that license on their own website or by using the process described at COM:OTRS.
  • In any case, if/when you upload, use Trademarked. - Jmabel ! talk 15:45, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Subcategory alphabetised differently in different Categories

I believe the Subcategory "Cimitero di Alessandria, Italia" should be alphabetised differently for the different Categories in which it appears. For example, In the Category "Alessandria", it should be alphabetised under "C" (Cimitero . . .), and in the Category "Cemeteries in Piedmont" it should be alphabetised under "A". I have placed a DEFAULTSORT template in "Cimitero di Alessandria, Italia" to alphabetise as "Alessandria, Cimitero di", but this alphabetises under "A" wherever it is placed. Is there a way to do different alphabetising for different Categories? Thanks in advance.

Hello. This is an inactive account of mine. I changed my username for privacy reasons but this file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Strokes.jpg still shows my old username in red. I would like the contribution changed to my new username, which is under the 'File history' section's table column called 'User'. Thank you. --Silvervortex (talk) 10:22, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

@Silvervortex: Your account was not renamed.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:53, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I renamed it yesterday yet the contribution is still unchanged for some reason. Is it possible to delete that file as I do not want that username to be shown for privacy reasons. --Silvervortex (talk) 10:58, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

@Silvervortex: Sorry, I wrote too soon. After I purged the file description page, your new username was shown.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:01, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

This is obviously related to uk:Користувач:Liza Poloz/Ґрант, Адам and uk:template:Особа which is controlled by Wikidata things and unlikely can work in the namespace 2. I’m definitely unwilling to embroil into uk.Wikipedia stuff. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:58, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Atlantis Marine Park

I have many beautiful photos of myself performing with the Atlantis dolphins and seals that i would like to donate to Wikipedia. I have recently created an account. Could someone please guide me in this matter. Cheers. Diane Dickerson x — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diane Dickerson (talk • contribs) 00:19, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Do I understand right that you are the trainer/performer who is photographed in action with the dolphins? Then we need permission from the photographer or other copyright owner (physical ownershipo is not the same). Read first Commons:OTRS. Afterwards see Commons:Upload Wizard. — Speravir – 02:16, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Cannot login since today

There is something with my account. I am logged at Wikimedia Commons but when I try to log in on any Wikipedia page with my password it tells me "Wrong password or name". My Wiki-account name Doronenko and my password are correct.

Then I tried to reset a password and it told me "You cannot reset user's passwords because you are blocked globally." but I checked my global page and there is no wiki where I was blocked. Unfortunately my password is not strong and I am afraid someone cracked my account.

Could you help? --Doronenko (talk) 17:53, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Were the account cracked, Doronenko couldn’t edit here because of SUL. You likely are using a globally blocked IP which is exempted from block here. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:16, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@Doronenko: Please post to or follow the applicable instructions on m:srg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:18, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
Could make sense as many globally blocked IPs are tolerated on Meta-wiki. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:24, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@Doronenko: If "Global IP block exemptions" group membership doesn't work for you on Russian Wikipedia, that is by design and you will have to request local "ipblock-exempt" group membership there like I did.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:18, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: a great joke, although (from my experience) I could be embittered reading this if directed to me. Doronenko ceased to edit ruWP earlier than myself. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:56, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: Of the 779 WMF projects I have touched, that is the only one where I had that problem. Noticing that Doronenko had edited that project (no matter how long ago) and was not blocked by username anywhere, I wanted to let him benefit from my experience. Nothing to do with you or wiki politics on that project.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:26, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
You guys are absolutely right - I can login from another device. That means someone blocked the IP-addresses. Doronenko (talk) 04:58, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
@Doronenko: Good, now you should have enough info to ask for "Global IP block exemptions" group membership at m:srg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:04, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Photo of Lon Darling - need help uploading

For any responses, can you please leave me a note on my English Wikipedia user talk page to say I have messages here? I don't check Commons.

The photograph of Lon Darling found on this page of Oshkosh Public Museum's website should be able to be used for the article. If you read the fine print at the very bottom of that page, it says (emphasis mine): "NOTICE: This material may be freely used by non-commercial entities for educational and/or research purposes as long as this message remains on all copied material.' Can someone please upload this into Commons and then add it to the infobox on his article? Thank you. SportsGuy789 (talk) 01:17, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi, there - I've have received permission from the copyright holder. The image is of the South African Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela. You can find the original link of the image here. What do I do now? Lefcentreright (talk) 17:21, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

It's not clear what permission you've received from the copyright holder, but Commons' requirement is very specific:
  • We need the copyright holder to grant a specific free license (e.g. CC-BY-SA). The license in question must allow derivative works, and cannot be restricted to non-commercial use.
  • We need clear evidence that such a license has been granted. If the uploader is not the copyright-holder there are basically two ways to provide that evidence:
    1. The copyright-holder can go through the process described at COM:OTRS. This is effective, but is likely to takea while to get permission, the OTRS volunteers are usually quite backlogged.
    2. On a website that the copyright-holder clearly controls, they can indicate that the image has the particular license.

Permission

Hello! Someone gave me permission to upload a photo of a band that they took at a concert. They also posted the photo on their Instagram. How do I upload it licence wise? What do I select? – DarkGlow (talk) 23:35, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

@DarkGlow: If they've released it on Instagram with a licence compatible with Commons (See Commons:Licensing), that's fine, otherwise they will have to give explicit consent via OTRS. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:45, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Dr Val Noone

Dr Noone is a notable historian of Irish History domiciled in Australia. His entry in Wikipedia badly needs updating and would be enhanced by a photo. It so happens I took a photo (headshot) of Dr Noone myself (personally) in 1999. I tried to upload it, went through the wizard process, and received a vague refusal in red. I retried and I am not sure what happened. It could be that you think I need his permission which in Australia law I do not. It would be no trouble getting his permission - is this the problem. If so where can I find a template fora subject to give his permission ? Is there any way this whole section of photos could be simplified - at least for ordinary straight out uploads. One almost needs a Masters degree to understand it.Gladiator-Citizen (talk) 11:38, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

@Gladiator-Citizen: You may have received an exclamation mark on a red background because uploads have been a tad unreliable lately. However, you have successfully uploaded the file. His permission is not necessary if he knew you were taking the photograph, but it might be wise to add the Personality rights template to the image. As for ease of uploading, the wizard is pretty straightforward, and just needs practice. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:53, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
If you were trying to cross-upload from the Wizard in the English-language Wikipedia rather than the Wizard on Commons, the former has some limitations based on types of photos where we see a high percentage of copyright violation. If that's the case, you might have better luck next time starting from Commons:Upload wizard. - Jmabel ! talk 15:59, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
@Gladiator-Citizen: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50KB) jpg photo as a new user. You wrote it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including original EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the copyright holder license it on their website or social media, or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:36, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Presumably, a photo he took in 1999 would not have been a digital photo, so how is EXIF relevant? - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: File:Dr Val Noone.jpg says "Date and time of digitizing" "04:31, 27 August 1999". Ergo, something digitized it then (camera or scanner) before "Photos 4.0" got ahold of it. enwiki says "In the mid-to-late 1990s, DSLR cameras became common among consumers" at en:Digital camera#History.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:47, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

Watermark removal in videos

Important! Hi, I think it would be useful to include some info on watermark removal in videos at Help:Removing watermarks. I am finding a lot of public domain videos lately with watermarks from organizations/individuals who do not own the work, and cannot because the film is in the public domain.

Further rant: I really hate it when the only surviving video copies of *public domain* films/cartoon episodes on the Internet have an added watermark/logo on them. With all due respect to the people preserving them and then uploading them, it is still insulting to do that if you have the only copy of the work. The work should look exactly like it originally looked, to the most you could possibly make it.

Conclusion: I need an easy, or at least doable, way to remove watermarks from videos. British Pathé for example is an organization who likes to do that despicable thing with their videos that they get their hands on, unfortunately. If I can win against their monopoly on stuff that isn't anybody's property including theirs, I will be very happy. PseudoSkull (talk) 03:47, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

Video of Trump motorcade

Yesterday I was going back home when I stumbled upon Trump's motorcade, and I took a video, that I first uploaded to YouTube: _7-C93FTWDM

Question 1: Is it appropriate for Commons? Commons only has 4 videos of motorcades, all in super-low quality: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Videos_of_motorcades

Question 2: To convert the MP4 into OGV I ran ffmpeg -i VID_20190526_193050.mp4 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 4 output.ogv, unfortunately that produces a video with stuttering audio. What is the command to convert it without this problem (ffmpeg 4.1.3)? Alternatively can I send it to someone with better ffmpeg skills than me? (700 MB)

Thanks! Syced (talk) 14:14, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

  • Yes, it is appropriate. If you provide the appropriate license on Youtube, and give a link here, then I'm sure we can get someone to convert & upload on your behalf if that it difficult for you. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
Jmabel: Thanks! The YouTube video is of lesser quality than the original, unfortunately, so any better solution is welcome. The YouTube URL is www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7-C93FTWDM , public domain is OK, no need to even attribute me :-) Syced (talk) 01:51, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Convenience link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7-C93FTWDM .

POST and JSON (?)

Hello,

I had a "magic link" to automatically update categories, that ran like this :

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=purge&generator=backlinks&gbllimit=max&forcelinkupdate=true&gbltitle=Category:ACC_containing_oracle-%E5%8D%A0

It used to work correctly, but now fails to do, answering with an error message telling me that a "purge" must be made through a "post" (??) The corresponding tutorial seems to be outdated, the examples have the same problem.

MW:API:Tutorial says that « There are two types of request that can be made: GET And POST. In case of a GET request, parameter would be a query string and in case of POST request, parameter would be data in JSON format. » but I don't know where to go from there.

Has anybody any idea on how to transform that kind of link in order to make Commons answer properly?

Altering an image

Hi, I'm finding all of everything wikipedia very confusing. Unfortunately I have just over a week to submit an article on a species of snake. I found an image of Australia that says it has GNU Free document licence and that it can be modified. So I want to upload it with the species distribution coloured in, however I have no idea how to upload it and attribute it correctly. What do I need to do to use the image with my modifications?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bellbo (talk • contribs) 02:17, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Upload the image under whatever useful filename you want — don't call it "File:brtuesipnrodgnfeapinsounseifpgobudgsnefipgdgneisbouh.png", but something descriptive will be good, e.g. "File:Distribution of snake species name.png". Before actually uploading, you'll want to build a description page for the new image. On the new description page, add a link to the name of the file that you found in the first place. You have to add a colon before the filename, or it will display the file instead of adding a link — :File:Map of Australia.png rather than . Next, go to the first file, find its license template (it will be something like "GFDL" enclosed in and characters), and copy everything from the to the . Then, look at the first file and see what name(s) is/are given for the author, and add those names as well as yours on the new description page. And finally, upload the modified map with the description page you've built. If you have any surprises, or if these instructions aren't helpful, please come back and explain what went wrong or what confused you. Nyttend (talk) 02:37, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
@Nyttend: I took the liberty of correcting an obvious typo that may have made it hard to follow your meaning above.
@Bellbo: Nyttend is presuming that the image that you found is here on Commons. If that's not the case, just say so, and we can talk you through that, too.
Also, when he says "build a description page" I'm guessing that is not clear to someone new here. I'm going to suggest a slightly different route.
  • Start from the page for the existing image of Australia. Select "edit", copy the content, select "cancel".
  • Keep that page around; open a new tab.
  • In the new tab, navigate to to Special:Upload. Select your new image (with an appropriate filename, as he suggested), and paste what you took from the edit mode of the page for the existing image.
  • Change the "description" and "date" area of the Information template to reflect your new image.
  • In the "other versions" area of the Information template, add name of the old file. name of the old file should skip "File:" but should include the extension; probably easiest to do with another copy-paste.
  • In the "author" area of the Information template, after the already-credited author, add yourself as the author of the display of the distribution of the particular snake.
  • Upload!
  • Now go back to the original image and, symmetric to Derived from above, add a Derivative works line in "other versions" indicating your new file.
I hope that's all clear; again, as Nyttend said, circle back if any of this is confusing. Also, when you have the file uploaded, if you like you can link to it in this thread so someone can check your work. - Jmabel ! talk 03:34, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Image note placement

This edit surprised me, because I don't remember ever seeing an image note that was added anywhere except at the very bottom of the code. Of course it makes sense to put categories below other "normal" content, e.g. description and geocoding, but I don't understand the point of essentially requiring a bot edit following any addition of an image note. Any idea where I could find the discussion where this was determined to be a good thing? Nyttend (talk) 02:32, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

  • SchlurcherBot does that all the time. Also, if there is already an ImageNote anywhere in the wikitext, and you add another ImageNote, it will immediately follow the existing ImageNote rather than go at the bottom. - Jmabel ! talk 03:38, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Question from AASKC

How can we know whether a photo is having copyright — Preceding unsigned comment added by AASKC (talk • contribs) 05:10, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

@AASKC: Wikimedia Commons respects copyright law, in source countries, in the United States, and in most countries of the world via the Berne Convention. In those countries, a copyright exists the moment a work is "fixed", rather than requiring registration. So most new photos have copyright. Is there a particular photo or source country you want to know about?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:21, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

How long does it take for a change to take effect?

I uploaded a newer version by changing the caption wording in this file from "frontier" to "territorial" at the bottom of the image. However 2 and a half hours later, I still can't see the change. Should I wait longer? Floathreenn (talk) 18:34, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

It usually happens immediately, but your own Web browser may cache the old image for a long time. Try reloading the page, possibly holding down Ctrl or Shift depending on your browser. --bjh21 (talk) 18:36, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

  • @Loaridsy: Link archive.org as the source, but you'll also need to link the page on which it is specified that this image is public domain. No, in the vast majority of cases you can not even use a snippet of a few seconds without copyright clearence. That's a myth: [4], [5]. --El Grafo (talk) 12:43, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
Samples in the case of "Ice, Ice Baby" sampling "Under Pressure" are repeated throughout a song and form a basis of it. If someone wants to sample a single instance of a three-second snippet in a work that is 180 seconds long, that would be protected fair use, just like how I can quote a book but if the entirety of the plot was "remixed" to make a new plot in a new book, I couldn't do that. Sampling music tends to be very different from a text quotation because of this feature where it makes up a melody or beat that is essential to what the new work is. Again, this is different from the de minimis link I shared above where a small part of (e.g.) a photo may well be copyrighted but isn't the focus of the photo. If a small part of a copyrighted work forms the basis of a new work versus if there is an incidental piece is a very different thing. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:46, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Any policy about (aggressive) automatic post-processing?

Hello all,

I just got a new smartphone, and I am quite surprised by how aggressive the post-processing is:

  • Automatic fake bokeh on all pictures, using shape recognition and the device's depth (Time-of-flight) sensor.
  • Aggressive sharpening, color enhancements.
  • Automatic HDR, it is almost impossible to take a dark picture.

I guess non-smartphone cameras (for instance point-and-shoots) are getting the same features, or will soon. So this question is not specifically about smartphones.

Question: Is there any policy or recommendation regarding automatic post-processing of all pictures? (I am not talking about manual post-processing)

If I had the choice between two apps, the default app (aggressive automatic post-processing) and an app that takes pictures with minimal post-processing, which one should I choose? From what I can see of a lot of the featured images or WLM/WLE winners, it does look like there is some work done on the colors/saturation/etc.

The only page that I could find about this topic is Help:Improve_the_quality_of_your_pictures but it is mostly in German.

Thanks! Syced (talk) 03:04, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

  • Not that we have a firm policy, but certainly I would prefer that someone start from the least automatic post-processing possible, and make any post-processing decisions themselves. - Jmabel ! talk 04:24, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

The thumbnail does appear in the category displays.

I believe this first occurred when I added a category.

The same situation exists with File:Sheet 12- (Bounded by Sixth Avenue, E. Fifty Ninth Street, Avenue A, E. Fifty-Fourth Street, First Avenue and E. Fortieth Street.) NYPL1520735.tiff – except the thumbnail does not appear in category displays – and it first happened after I recently had the file rotated by Rotatabot.

Thank you for any help you can give me. Vzeebjtf (talk) 02:39, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

@Vzeebjtf: I could compress the tiff to 47.7MB (Lempel–Ziv–Markov_chain_algorithm), 54.7MB (Zip_(file_format)), 62.2MB(Lempel–Ziv–Welch), which is still tiff, but I don't think that will reduce renderingtime.
I could convert it to png (not shure if lossless) 43.8MB.
I decided to lossy compress the image to jpeg: File:Perris_Manhattan_V._5_Plate_079_publ._1859.jpeg 3.1MB=2.9Mebibyte while keeping the original resolution 6.299 × 4.880 .
I think 3MB quality is good enough for preview?
 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 17:36, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. Since the problem seems to be that the original files are too large, can you tell me what the limit is? And why the second file was OK pre-rotation? Vzeebjtf (talk) 22:11, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
@Vzeebjtf: I don't know much about raster-data, I manly operate on SVGS (vectordata, similiar to CAD-Models).
If a SVG takes too much renderingtime (f.e. it has many complex filters, contains a too long line) the file does not imideatly get rendered. In many cases this issue will be resolved within 24h.
The renderer gets updates, to newer versions, which in generall reduces bugs, and therefore can render more images correctly, but for some images it worsen it. But this won't be noticed, since the rendered file (by the old renderer) will be used. (You can't render Millions of pictures again, just because of a minor update.)
So if you reupload a newer version of the image or you ?action=purge the image, then the image will be rerendered (with the current renderer).
So I think there is no file-limit-size, but I assume a maximum time-limit, therefore compressing the immage might even increase the rendering-time.

Thank you very much. Vzeebjtf (talk) 23:32, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
Vzeebjtf, Johannes, according to COM:MAXTHUMB the limit is 50 Megapixels, so a resolution limit. I replaced two templates in both the TIFF and JPEG file descriptions with LargeTIFF and Compressed version respectively. Earlier on this page you will find that there is also an absolute limit of 4 GB, cf. COM:MAXSIZE. — Speravir – 23:44, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi Shilpa. If you are the photographer, you are free to choose a free licence for your uploads, i.e. a licence that allows for commercial reuse and the making of derivatives. You could also waive all your rights and release your photo into the public domain, so anyone can use it without asking or crediting you. This is entirely up to you when you are the original photographer. However, all uploads must have a statement about its copyright status. See COM:Licensing for more information. Photo uploading

@Azeİlkin: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you wrote it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such works on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:38, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Faked SVG file?

User:Aerbaniya has created and uploaded new file File:China linguistic map.svg. Yes, we want SVG versions of Jpegs when they are diagrams, etc., that could be better coded as SVG, especially because the SVG can be a dramatically smaller file. As noted at File talk:China linguistic map.svg all the user has done is embed the original JPG data in base64 encoding text form. The SVG file is now 5.24 MB, whereas the JPG file was 615 KB.

The problem is they are enthusiastically replacing every occurrence of the JPG with the SVG across several sites, sometimes using IP addresses.

Is this a wrong-headed effort? How to reverse these? Shenme (talk) 19:33, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Aerbaniya has been blocked indefinitely for sockpuppetry. I suggest that we bulk-delete all the fake SVGs by this uploader as being out of scope. @Elcobbola: FYI. De728631 (talk) 20:48, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
Hmm'kay, but how to revert all the places the fake SVGs have replaced the previous JPG? Shenme (talk) 21:03, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
What about places where the fake .svg has actually been used in Wikipedia articles? Martinvl (talk) 21:21, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
I started to replace all uses of the linguistic map fake SVG (with Global replace script). It replaced at least one usage (I got a welcome notice of a wiki due to this), but it stopped working (or the delinker stopped). BTW, De728631, I think at least File:China linguistic map.jpg could need some protection for file reverts. — Speravir – 21:31, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
Indeed. I have semi-protected the China linguistic map for a month. Thanks for working on the issue, Speravir. De728631 (talk) 21:37, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
You (or someones) got it from 27 to 15 usages across wikis. That's why I was worried about the above, that the file's page would be deleted before all usages could be reversed ("File usage on other wikis"). Still need those 15 reverted to previous JPG. Shenme (talk) 21:37, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
It was my action. Meanwhile I was successful in 4 6 10 other usages. Maybe this has to be done in chunks. — Speravir – 23:27, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
I've manually removed the rest (6?) of the usages of this SVG file. I (someone?) needs to look at the other activities of this user? I saw a new flag with no cite as to colors... Shenme (talk) 00:18, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

There are two main problems with this file. First, Alger Hiss lived in several houses in Georgetown. This is not one of them. Second, it is an image of a house in the next block, at 2811 P, although it said to be an image of 2905 P, which is indeed one of the houses where Hiss lived.

I propose adding an image of 2905 P. I do not want to include in the house description the name of Alger Hiss. Although the house is now uninhabited, while an estate is being settled, a future owner might well not want his or her house directly associated with someone thought to be a traitor. An image of 2905 P and his other houses can be added to the category on Alger Hiss.

I have tried to contact the author of this image but have not received a reply. Henrytow (talk) 19:44, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

@Henrytow: The file has been removed from Flickr. An Admin here would have to move it to something like File:2811 P Street NW, Georgetown.jpg without redirect to allow for upload of a correct photo of 2905 (after cleaning by a new owner).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:00, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
While I think the existing file should be moved, usually we don't get rid of redirects in cases like this (to preserve stability of existing links, such as the one in the title of this section). The description or the talk page should be changed to indicate that this had formerly been incorrectly identified as Hiss's home. Nothing about the presence of this file interferes with uploading the image of the other house.
And while you may not wish to identify the image of 2905 P as one of the houses where Hiss lived, nothing should stop someone else from adding this accurate and historically significant information to the description. - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

@Hddty. and GreenMeansGo: The original upload and the first revision by Hddty, made active again by GMG’s revert, have a transparent background inside of the coat. Fixing this was apparently the goal. I took Zscout’s version, put it in Inkscape, reduced page size to selection size, and then saved as optimised SVG (with intentional addition of a viewbox; by the way: cf. Help:SVG). Afterwards I opened in a text editor and slightly rounded up the size values. — Speravir – 23:21, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
